Boston Bruins stumble at home as Ottawa Senators hand out a reality check—will the veteran core step up, or are growing pains here to stay?

Ian McLaren dissects the Bruins’ flat 4-1 loss, spotlighting James Hagens’ highlight reel goal and tough defensive night, Marco Sturm’s refusal to scapegoat young talent, and Nikita Zadorov’s postgame call for renewed identity. With Boston’s power play sitting at a staggering 0-for-10 and last year’s top scorers—David Pastrnak, Pavel Zacha, and Morgan Geekie—still goalless, urgent questions loom over Steve Spott’s role and the team’s offensive strategy. Key topics also include Matt Poitras and Frederic Brunet’s season debuts, extensive line juggling, and what must change before a high-stakes showdown against the Utah Mammoth.

Is Boston’s lackluster start a sign of deeper issues or just early-season turbulence? Don’t miss this candid, data-driven breakdown on the next steps for the Black and Gold.

Boot off home ice after a flat 4-1 loss to Ottawa, Boston's invisible veterans need to stop hiding behind 19-year-old James Higgins and fix a completely broken zero for 10 years. You can't just go to the store and get your own power play. Your Lockdown Bruins, your daily podcast on the Boston Bruins, part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. What is up Bruins fans? I am Ian McLaren and on today's episode of Lockdown Boston Bruins, we are breaking down Monday nights with the first open day of the year. We are going to touch on the key story lines addressing

James Higgins's event tonight. His raw post game accountability. Mark Oster, of his 19-year-old rookie. And the key to the door terming zero for 10 Powerplay, with a negative goal differential, and a complete scoring uggler from last year's top finished. Finally will touch on some signals, examine the line shuffling, season debuays for Matt Poplar and Frederick Broenas and what needs fixing before Thursdays tilts against the Utah mammoth. and use code locked on to get $25 when you trade $25. Kowshi trade what's next. So the Bruins last night, completely outclassed by the Ottawa Senators

in a game in which the black and gold, super flat from the very beginning. And we can kind of put it in the context of, yep, this team's playing their third game in four nights that included travel to Canada, Winnipeg on Friday, crossing the border, Minnesota on Saturday, come home Sunday, time change, playing against the Ottawa Senators who have only played one game so far this season, heading into last night's action on home ice. So back to back, travel, and three games in four nights for the Bruins whereas the Senators were just coming off their first game a win over the May beliefs. But at the same time, it doesn't really excuse how they played. Rookie mistakes directly contributed to goals against,

but Marco Sturm refused to scapegoat 19 year old James Hagen's placing the onus on Boston's absent veteran core following the flat four one divisional loss. Now James Hagen's did score Boston's only goal at 330 of the third period. Samuel Urson had replaced X Bruin, Lina's Allmark after a second period collision with JJ Paterca. Allmark was removed for precautionary reasons. Urson misplayed a puck behind the net. Hagen's picked up the wiff and banked it home from below the goal line, his second goal of the season. That was the good for Hagen's. Some defensive growing pains though in the first and second periods. In the first period, Hagen's took a slashing penalty during a power play, followed seven seconds later

by a matte potra tripping call, handing Ottawa one minute and 42 seconds of five on three power play time. Later, Hagen's attempted a light backhand pass, two David Poszenok through center ice, Tim Stutzluss stripped him on a stick, sending Batherson in for a breakaway goal to make it three nothing. Later, Hagen's failed to clear the puck along the wall, leading to a net front scramble where Mike Amadio banked a shot off Hagen's right skate for the four nothing lead. And this kid, to his credit, went out there and showed a great deal of maturity faced by the media post game. He said, personally, I was a big reason for a couple of those goals going in. I have to be a lot better. That was unacceptable on my end.

You want to be able to play really well in your end and get that win. Marcos Turb defended his rookie. He said he's not blaming him. He's a kid who needs to learn. Our top guys, games like this, they have to be in charge. Sturmer added, I can't ask for James Hagen's to take charge. Yes, he needs to be better, but overall as a group, we've just got to help those kids out. They're kids. They need to learn the hard way sometimes, but they need help. And that's the thing with the Bruins finally, going with some youth over veterans. Last night we had Matt Pachtra in the lineup after Mikey A. Cymott was waived and sent to A.H.L. Providence. You had Frederick Brunei in the lineup as well. You've got James Hagen's and 19-year-old in the lineup, along with Fraser Minton, Maratushin and Dinov,

some of the younger guys rounding out this kind of new wave of Bruins players. And there's going to be bumps along the way. There's going to be warts in their games. It's just the reality of learning kind of on the fly here, especially in Hagen's case. He's gone right from college, a few games in the A.H.L. up to the NHL level, still only 19. And premier offensive players like him will have their sticks on the puck, more often than not. And there's going to be some turnovers along the way, some bad decisions. But overall as a group, they've got to help those kids. And the Bruins veterans were just nowhere to be found. Ottawa jumped to a two, nothing first period lead on two Tim Stutz Leguls, shorthanded rush goal at 739,

following a David Posternock turnover, talking about guys with pucks on their sticks a lot, who will turn it over. And another odd man attack goal at 922, just as another Bruins penalty had expired. Batherson, a modio scored early in the second, making a four-nothing. Stern burns his time out with 34 minutes remaining, wow, TD Garden fans, rightfully so were burbly and audibly displeased. Nikita Zadorov, after the game, kind of dropped a few truth bombs and called on the Bruins to have a bit of an identity check. He said, there's no message here. Everybody knows that they dropped the ball on Holmice. They didn't come ready to play. You could see it from the first minute of the game. Don't know why. It's on us as players to do the homework and make sure that never happens again.

Zadorov added, swaking only save so many two on ones and breakaways. It's on the players in front of him to eliminate these scoring opportunities for the other team. We just gotta get back to our identity. Our identity is playing really good, structured defense of hockey. He said, we're not an offensive team. We're not a skilled team. We're a simple team. We gotta get pucked deep, get on the forecheck and wear teams down. And it was interesting that it was Nikita Zadorov who was making these statements after the game seeing as he's not technically part of the leadership group this season. David Posnerak has the C, Charlie McAvoy, Havaslindholm, Tanner Gennow, with the A's as assistants. And it was Zadorov who was out there

kind of facing the brunt of it. He said it, you know, it's okay. It's early in the year. Obviously there are new faces, different ligaments. The guys take time, but we will be fine. And a lot of it is, yeah, a short and training camp, a reduced preseason. You see it kind of all over the NHL right now where teams are figuring it out and it's going to take five, six. In the case of the Bruins, even more time for them to figure it out. Because of course, Charlie McAvoy is not in the lineup. And right now they've gone two and two in the four games with two remaining. One against Utah, which is going to be an incredibly difficult game to win. And then another against Philadelphia who looks even more lost over the course of their first few games. Monday's game against Ottawa was the Bruins only Atlantic Division matchup

in their first 17 games of the season. Their next divisional game isn't until November 8th versus Florida. Dropping two points at home against a divisional rival creates an early season hole. And they're going to have to play Western conference teams in like five of the next six, including Utah and then a four game road trip beginning next week. They've got some things to figure out, especially the power play. And we'll touch on some stats and signals from last night's game here as the podcast continues. We cannot talk about last night's game without mentioning Boston's woeful power play.

Special teams have crashed into negative goal differential territory. While last year's top three goal scorers remain completely goalless through four games. Power play is in a bit of a state of crisis right now, O for 10 with a negative goal differential. Boston went O for four on the men, men advantage against Ottawa. Again, they're now O for 10 on the season. Not only that, but they were outscored on the men advantage. So a minus one net differential. The Bruins gave up a short-handed goal to Tim Stutzle after David Posnernauk turned the puck over twice on the same power play. Less than two minutes later, campus Lindholm pass, turn over led directly to Stutzle's second odd man rush goal right as the power play expired, just narrowly missing another short-handed goal against.

17 minutes and 45 seconds of total power of play time the season, Boston has generated only two high danger scoring chances while surrendering one high danger look and two actual goals going the other way. The Bruins ranked ninth on the power play last season, but after the Olympics, it really fell off. And since returning from the Olympic break, carrying into this season, Boston has the fourth worst power play in the NHL at just 14%. And you wonder how safe is Steve Spots position right now. His role is as power play coach, and they were pretty good to begin the season last year. Ninth overall, and a lot of that was from a 26.3% success rate from October to February.

Even Marco Sturm doesn't know what's going on. It's a good question, he says. I really don't know. I can't give you an answer right now, honestly. No idea why, really don't. That's great. Steve Spot hopefully has some answers as the guy who is running the power play. And if not, perhaps it's time to have a different voice there. We know that Morgan Geeky has started out in the bumper position. Maybe that's not paying off both, or all three of Geeky, Poshana, Kampavlzaka, without goals through four games, which is obviously a problem. When you're three top goal scorers from last year, our goalists, Boston's goal scorers, so far the season have been JGPaterka and James Hagen's each with two. The Lindhomes, Hampus and Elias each with one. And then two of your fourth liners,

tenors you know, Marc Castlic, as well as Fraser Minton. Those are your goal scorers, so far this season for the Boston Bruins. It's not for a lack of getting pucks on net. Poshana with 15 shots through four games. He's trailed by Elias Lindhomes, he's got nine shots, Zaka, Paterka Minton each with eight. What's a big concern is Morgan Geeky with only five shots on goal. Through four games. We know he's got an elevated shooting percentage over the past couple of seasons to try to help counter that. You got to get more pucks on net and he's not doing that right now. The Bruins had been playing pretty well at five on five, five on five, but Ottawa dominated pretty much every key metric out shooting Boston 2313, a 10-6 edge in high danger chances, and of course, outscored them

three to one with their fourth goal coming, short-handed. And again, top three goal scorers from last season, Geeky at 39, Zaka with 30, Posta with 29, zero goals through four games. And both Pavel Zaka and Casey Middlestat have yet to record a single point through the first four games of the regular season. There's a few Bruins without points right now. They're the only two who have appeared in all four games so far who have yet to record a point. Shankar Ali with no point, he was removed from the lineup last night in favor of Matt Pochra. Jonathan Asprow without a point, he was removed from the lineup in favor of Frederick Brunei. Both Brunei and Pochra were held off the scorchee. Everybody else has at least a point, except for your two primary second-line players

who are supposed to be bringing the secondary offense here. Morgan Geeky has one assist, five shots on goal, Middlestat, and Zaka just not really providing much in the way of secondary support. And right now you look at how the Bruins have been playing and you see that you need really all four lines chipping in here in order to maximize their offensive opportunities. Like right now, at five on five play, they're 15th when it comes to shot attempt differential in shot differential, they're 23rd, and in high danger chance differential, the Boston Bruins are 27th. So they're getting some attempts,

not all of them are getting on net, and fewer of those are high quality opportunities for the Boston Bruins. And right now they're expected goals, five on five shows that. The Boston Bruins currently rank, let's see here, where are the Bruins? 17th in the NHL with an expected goals four of 51.57. So they're actually on the positive end in terms of expected goals, but they score fewer than expected. Six goals, five on five, six allowed, expected 8.77, allowed 8.24. So the Bruins really need to start getting some success on the power play and getting more high danger chances on net.

Wow, also trying to eliminate the opposition's opportunities as well as alluded to by, why not alluded to, just flat out said by Nikita Zedorov after last night's game. What signals can we take away from last night's loss? Is all hope lost for the Bruins who are once 2 and 0 and who are now 2 and 2? Well, no, there's still a lot of season left, and we'll touch on what we can take away from last night's game here as the podcast continues. We make it easy. Toyota, let's go places. All right, so the Bruins have played four games. They're still 80 left because of the new expanded regular season. And Marco Sturm is actively searching for spark plugs through line shuffling and rookie integration as the club prepares to host the Utah mammoth on Thursday. So they have a couple days off, which is great because, of course, we just talked about the three games and four nights across two states and one province. And Utah right now is two and one, the plus seven goal differential through their first three games of the season. And they probably have a game. Yep, they're playing tonight actually against the New Jersey devil.

So the Bruins will have an extra day off in order to prepare for this one while watching Utah play the devil's tonight. By the third period last night, Sturm had demoted James Hagen to the fourth line alongside Matt Pachtra and Tanner Junot. That demotion though demonstrated noticeable offensive energy and spark late in the game. Hagen's in Pachtra showing off a little bit of chemistry there, which may begin play as we move forward. Are those guys maybe well suited to play with each other? Sturm also altered his top line, elevating Pavel Zaka to center between Pachtra and Yiki. He had tried Fraser Minton between Pasta and JJ Paterka on Saturday. So the early line combinations that we've seen clearly not set in stone.

Elias Lindholm, who knows where he fits in at the moment. Pavel Zaka getting some prime time against or with Pasta and Yiki. Paterka, it was just all shuffled a bit of a blender going on there. And don't forget Casey Middlestat and Pavel Zaka are in contract seasons. They're looking to excel this year in order to warrant some of this big time money that's being thrown around the NHL these days. When you got a guy like Tristan Luno played only 14 NHL games getting north of $7 million. You see yourself as an established NHL veteran who wants a piece of that pie, right? So those guys have extra incentive personally to thrive this season. So we'll see what the lines look like here coming up.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Pachtra, a triple P line. Maybe Pachtra with Pasta and Paterka or Pachtra with Hagens and who's new Dinov with Fraser Minton being elevated to a higher role. Is Elias Lindholm like your third or fourth line center behind Minton Hagens and Pachtra? Who knows? Pachtra, of course, made his season debut centering the fourth line between Jeno and Mark Casslic replacing Sean Caralli. I love seeing Pachtra in the lineup over Caralli who I mentioned has zero points so far to begin the season. Pachtra, he had the penalty against, but he was a plus one for the night in 11 minutes. And 28 seconds of ice time, one only 28.6% of his face offs, though, which could

be knock against him when you're trying to put your best centers in the mix. So maybe Pachtra gets a little time on the wing, probably not though. Frederick Brunei made his season debut on the bottom pairing with Mason Lora, replacing Jonathan Aspero. I thought he looked all right out there and I expect him to be more of a mainstay in the lineup. Yet 18 minutes, 43 seconds of ice time, he had one shot on goal and did not look out of place by any stretch of the imagination. Once McAvoy comes back, the question is who else comes out and what do you do with those two extra defensemen? Sturm actually gave Brunei a brief look on the point on the number one power play unit in the second period. Only lasted about four seconds before a Lies Lindholm took an interference penalty to wipe out the power play.

Sturm said, overall, everyone was very flat. So it's tough to evaluate Pachtra and Brunei's debuts. He said he didn't mind Brunei. He had some good moments. Another kid who needs to learn definitely showed some good signs. Now the Bruins do have today off before returning to practice Wednesday ahead of Thursday's home game against the Utah mammoth. They're going to need to work on rebuilding Pp1 personnel, maybe evaluating Mason Lora, Frederick Brunei, campus Lindholm at the point. They need to stabilize the center position, find some workable line combinations and work on those cleaner zone exits. Those are a bunch of things that this team needs to work on ahead of Thursday's game against the Utah mammoth, which will not be easy. This is a very good team out in the Eastern Conference.

Sorry, Western Conference. Then they'll play the Flyers, which hopefully will be a bit of a gimmie before they figured out and then they'll head out on a road trip that we'll discuss later on as the days go by.
