About this episode

“7 million Californians depend on community health clinics for their care, but Proposition 44 cuts billions from clinics. Under 44, hundreds of clinics will close, and health services will be eliminated.”From the transcript

The Phoenix Suns have exercised the contract options of recent first round picks, Khaman Maluach and Ryan Dunn. What does this mean for their future with the team and the role we can expect them to play in this upcoming season.

The Suns exceeded expectations last season thanks in large part to boasting a defense that ranked 10th in the NBA. With new pieces in the fold, the Suns will need to find more success in a similar manner, but can they?

At Day 3 of training camp, defense quickly became the topic of discussion and PHNX Suns’ Stephen PridGeon-Garner was on hand to take part. He’ll discuss what was said and what that could mean for Phoenix’s aspirations to become even better on the defensive end this season.

Join Stephen, Gil and Aryton as they discuss all things defense as well as some social media fodder that has fed our appetite for Suns basketball. Follow the show: @PHNX_Suns, @GilMcGregor_, @StephenPG3 and @FreckledMamba!

Day three of Phoenix Sun's training camp brought important news about their most recent first round picks Ryan Dunning, Kamal Mala wash that is. We'll talk about that and much more about successes upcoming season. PHNX Sun is coming at you after this. What's up? What's happening? Welcome into PHNX. Sun's my name is Gilm. I'll Steven to my right and the freckled mom butt behind the Mac making it all happen. It is Thursday, aka day three of Phoenix Sun's training camp aka four days away from the Sun's preseason opener and we fully intend on talking about the Sun's defense and their capabilities but we got a little bit of breaking news right before we were getting ready to come on here and talk to you

all regarding Kamal Mala watch and Ryan Dunn and their immediate future with this franchise so we'll get into all of that and what that means of course in stack or boom, Detrol back on patrol as always what up Andy good to see you in the chat as well and before we get into this breaking news Steven how are you today man? I'm doing good bro how you doing man? I'm doing well freckled mom I take it you're doing well as well today on this fine Thursday afternoon. It's been an exciting past 30 minutes for the Sun's and the PHNX Sun's podcast so I'm excited to get into it. I mean maybe the most exciting 30 minutes you could ask for like to give you guys I mean we know it's 3 p.m. right now we found out what I guess you could say 20 like right around like 230 we find out the Sun's have exercise the fourth year option on Ryan Dunn's contract and then they exercise the third year option on Kamal Mala watch this contract now to some this might seem like formalities but there have been guys who don't have these options exercise on their respective contracts so it means a lot of things

it's a vote of belief in these guys because we've seen highs and lows from them now the trajectory the ascension that they both hope to be on and what they hope to mean for this franchise we got the Ryan Dunn's first so we can talk about Ryan Dunn first two seasons with the Sun's 6.4 points 3.9 boards 1.1 assists per day has shown the 3nd capabilities has shown the ability to pick up star players 94 feet knock down corner 3s and he's been putting in the work in the gym last one to leave the gym on day one of training camp and there are a lot of questions around his future with this franchise people seem to have mixed opinions and mixed feelings about him but this decision at least to me says the Sun's are in a spot where they have a straightforward feeling about Ryan Dunn. Expand on that. They want him to be here they want him to be a part of what they're doing and what they're building that's what it tells me. Yes absolutely I could not agree more. I think it also means a lot for the Sun's when we're looking at there's the box score stuff there's

the loud stuff he does. He's someone that shows up he's someone that has expectation level about himself that you know he's gonna come and put the working mentioned you mentioned day one he was the last guy standing on the court in terms of getting working. That was a common occurrence last season if he wasn't the last guy he was one of the last guys in terms of other guys either joining him or also taking shots or other guys getting working on one of the other three baskets that they have at the practice facility and that that says a lot that doesn't necessarily always translate immediately into game reps but what does translate into game reps is the confidence that you that you gain from putting in the work but also the wisdom that you gain from putting in that work. So maybe you're missing long but maybe a long some of the shots that you're missing long you start to understand your shot a little bit more okay I was missing long because I had a little bit of a hitch from point A to point B or I was fading or slightly shifting to the left

to right on my shot so I know if I'm missing long it's because of one of these two or three things that's information I would not have gotten if I wasn't putting the work in. Now when that happens in the game oh man I missed my first shot long I don't have to guess man why do I miss that shot it felt good I can go right back to the reps I was doing one of these three things and as long as I could identify which one and not do it again I'm giving myself a better chance of when that next opportunity comes to not say a shot down. Other part for me too is with the sons especially on the drawer not they want guys to gain possessions Ryan Dunne was one of their best possession gainers last season the top four was Mark Williams Ryan Dunne Jordan Goen Colin Gillespie not necessarily in order but those were there for best possession gainers last season when you look at things that they were doing at also to that mix as well. When you look at what Ryan can do and what he's showing to be capable of if he's not going down to three everything Gillespie is consistent the defense is consistent you can do so without fouling that times but it's not for a lack of effort that he's

picking up those files it's for other things the defense is there the connectedness is there the multiple efforts are there the versatility is there if the three ball starts to fall and he's continuing to make quick decisions he might be a top eight rotation player for the sons this season. That was my thought I was thinking about it like it's not easy by any means but the path for him to have a role on this team is very clear because he has and we've seen him at his best I will always refer to this particular part of the gaming it's Oklahoma City it was a he knocked down a corner three the first he forced it turnover knocks down a corner three ball goes through the net he picks up shake Gillespie's anger 85 feet out that encapsulates what the sons need Ryan done to be he's showing the capability of doing it he can do it and he is working to be able to do it you talk about that work the three pointer is going to be one of the big swing skills form the defense is there we've seen it we saw it ever Jane we saw it in spots are in a year we saw it in spots last year can he

stay out of foul trouble can he be a cutter can he be active on the offensive glass these things only add to Ryan done to maybe move up from being 10 tonight night to eight because we've seen him do it we've seen him do it at a high level we've seen him guard well fight over ball screens wreak havoc as an on ball defender he has the length he has the physical traits and the attributes to do that and be that level level plus defender and then let's remind ourselves right now it's 23 years old it's just funny because he's been here and i'm not just saying this and hyping him up because he's a friend of the program and his pops as a friend of the program as well but like talking to Ryan and being around Ryan he doesn't feel like somebody that i'm nine years over there like Ryan is so mature Ryan has a great understanding of himself and maybe sometimes to a fault like i think that there are points in time when we talked about Ryan it seems like it was a him being in his own head about things that he needs to do and i think that my mind reader have no idea but i think oftentimes the thing they kept him on the court kept him off of the court was himself and just a matter of growing in your confidence and just like we've talked about other

people well he had a crazy rookie year thing everything changed from year one to year two like that isn't necessarily the environment to harness development between coaching between your star players who were on the team between the people being at odds with management and that kind of cleaned out a little bit and last year in some ways was like part two of his rookie season so the ups and downs that he had last year are indicative of a guy who was going through some of those rookie trials once again well now he's got continuity he's got the majority of the guys he played next to last year back with him same coaching staff same coaches who developed him working to develop him even more that should benefit him because i do think he's a guy who oftentimes gets overlooked when we talk about the people who can develop and grow on this team we sometimes just forget about Ryan done because i think you've got come on and rochere who are part of this regime you have come co-host parties regime you have also who made a leap last year and Ryan I think gets forgotten

about because he doesn't fit in any of those kind of boxes but he's in his own and I think that he has honestly some capabilities to go further and farther if he's able to tap into that i think that's the unique part about Ryan and in comparison or in contrast to the other guys the other young guys if you will is feels like maybe some of the reason why he doesn't get thought of in the same light as those guys because of the the condition of him being our rotation versus in rotation feels like there's only maybe one or two variables in play with them because other parts of his game are either our solid or have shown to be solid enough and that's a good space to be in honestly you have less question marks about your game and there's more okay if Ryan's in you know he's doing one of six different things on the court on both ends of the floor to where you don't have to worry about those things that's important you have to have a baseline now it's what about what are you doing with other things that maybe are a little bit more invariance for you if you're able to streamline those

things and as we talked about three point shooting is a big piece in that if he's able to knock them down again if he's taking four attempts to game and he's knocking down 1.5 1.6 of those that's good enough that means that there's a handful of multiple three point make games from Ryan done and relative to how teams are likely going to continue to defend him until he makes them have to blink that's what you need from him if he's knocking down the catching shoot three is if they're able to generate or at least making quick decisions if he's not taking those shots and not stopping the offense from creating advantage he's right where he needs to be to be an impact player within the rotation in the last part talk a lot about goodie and colline because they were just loud and disruptive and then naturally also before the mark Williams injuries took place last year those were the three kind of pillars of the reserve unit Ryan shifted to the bench last season he was as integral as anybody in that faction of the team as far as the identity forcing turnovers getting out in transition getting on the offensive boards deflections the nasty defense like all of that stuff that

goodie represents in their bodies Ryan done was right there and locked up with him to start the season and then goodie just took it to a different stratosphere which credits him but that doesn't mean that Ryan got worse there Ryan just maintained where he was as goodie took off and that was for the betterment of the team if Ryan can take some of those same steps this year when I already might just be one of the best defense of you know it's in the league in terms of reserves might be even better on offense as well I'm glad you mentioned goodie because goodie immediate day said that Ryan done had a great summer he single to Ryan done out is one of the young guys who had a really good summer and I asked Ryan about it and Ryan said I'm just being myself and that illustrates the level of self awareness of what I'm really good at what I need to lean into more to be impactful on this team he knows what the sons need him to be he knows the role that he needs to fill for this team and that's why we see him after practice 15 20 30 minutes getting up three pointer after three pointer there's a lot of break spot three's a lot of corner three's that's what's

going to be presented for him this season so to think about that and think about Ryan's focus on improvement because the defense is an effort thing the defense is the thing where we know he has that he has the physical tools for that and it's going to be fun to see him and goodie him and Rochir him and man man all these different defensive tandem that maybe are trapping people in ball screen situations he's shooting passing links making good of all of the attributes that he has and the gifts that he has on that end of the floor and then adding that with the work that he's put in this all season that's big thing I gained from the conversation that we were able to have with him this all season it's just the focus that he had and the understanding that he had of what he needs to be better at what he needs to be better about and what he already does well and leaning into that even more like we said it before he had that injury this year he had one audacious dunk attempt per game he's trying somebody that can get him going that gets the team going as well like I imagine your early game and he comes in the second unit and you're down seven nine points early

against whatever team maybe it's Denver and he tries yoke it's he dunks on yoke it's boom that gives you so much momentum you can't put any type of label on that he is the guy on the team to do that now he and Jaylen and Miles and maybe Cole at one point to do that as well but I like him doing that more than anybody else because we've seen him do it we've seen him try ready to go Barry's try winby so those types of things they don't necessarily fit within some type of skill or anything like that those are things that Ryan Dunn has done very well and has shown the capability to do even more of as he goes into a third NBA season and that's what excuse me that's what I'm looking forward to in this third season because having a consistency with head coach means that clarity of role clarity of all of the objectives that are going to be presented to you in terms of Ryan we see you in role x for the team if you're able to do bullet point 123 while mixing in a little bit of bullet point five within all of that and streamlining consistency

there I imagine that's the way some of the conversations from coaching staff to Ryan are going in terms of what his minute allocation will be with the team if he's checking off those boxes and doing them consistently relative to what his potential even going into year three suggests that he can be this is someone they can be a game changer for the sons and not in the oh my god this guy is an all star sense but looking at what the sons when they're doing these things and they're at their best which we play in all second by the way that's just point that he has played me all he has played in all second he has well said well said well said the sons love defense yeah Ryan Dunn is a very good defender if he's checking off the defensive boxes and doing so thoroughly and even going to over deliver on the objectives that he's been given make it hard for the coach to not play you coach you say you love defense what if I'm a top three defender on the team you can't not play me and now you find ways to live with the other things that I'm working through on offense so that maybe other things you might have for me to work through if I'm doing what you're asking me

and it's so over delivering capacity that you have to find line-up to feature me and if one of Jordan Goen or Dylan Brooks isn't on the court welcome to the rotation Ryan Dunn you're here to stay and that's one of the things we talked about with him we talked about some of the young guys we didn't really talk about him through his lens but he does fit that lens in that there are different roles we can still a couple minutes at playing the three still a couple minutes playing the four and five minutes here and there to do things especially match-up dependent things that he can do I know yeah I'll say it one more time he's just 23 though he'll be 24 when the new year rolls around so still a guy who has so much potential that he can live up to and he has two years of NBA experience under his belt already so he understands the ups and downs ins and outs of the NBA grind now he's not the only person that the sons made a major contract decision about today come on Molo Watch had the third year of his contract exercised today and after our first break we'll talk about come on Molo Watch and some of the hype that we'll get into

even more as the week goes on but what this decision could mean for him and his immediate future with the Phoenix Suns don't go anywhere Steve let me tell you sometimes nothing is better than introducing 0% balance transfers from mountain america credit unit simply move your high-rate balances to amount america credit card by October 31st 2026 and pay 0% APR on the transfer to mount for six months with the special offer you could save on interest simplify your monthly payments and pay down debt faster that's a big deal get 0% APR by transferring your balance to an mountain america credit card by October 31st 2026 find out more at macu.com slash 0% APR for six months then variable APR for credit or based on creditworthiness terms conditions and exclusions apply mountain america credit unit guiding you forward on your financial journey and we'll also guide you forward to circle k where it pays to be in their circle remember what's better than their circle 1.0 in a circle 2.0 yes you got that right and inner circle 2.0 is where

etched out a consistent stint in the rotation mm-hmm it says a lot goes back to the work when you have a workers environment and guys show to embody those same characteristics of the greater foundation the greater culture that the franchise is working to establish you want to stand for alignment you start with Ryan Dunn you work your way to to come on mullowash and you see two pillars of this new culture that the sons are working to establish now it will be fun to get an account of Ryan Dunn on what things look like in his rookie year compared to the field of vibe the culture of last season and what they've been working through over the summer going into year two under Jordan not that's another conversation for another day but i say that to say it's different it's night and day i was able to go to a couple of practices in the 2024-25 season that aged so many of us in our

basketball years including someone like Ryan Dunn who again by my account this is not matter fact just a pain just perspective was done wrong in terms of the situation and scenario that he was brought into just from the powers that be in the ways that he was handled in his rookie season now he's back on the beat and path that he needs to be the getting where he ultimately is going to go with his career so congrats to him and having the franchise back you on that front while be it even in a different regime not the same regime that drafted you that caveat says a lot about the work that he's done also also going to be around for a lot longer same situation in the scenario there but as we bring it to come on to have done so in just one season you want me to plan basketball for a few years but one thing you know how to do is leave a mark and to be able to leave such an impactful mark one that resonates in the minds of so many respected individuals with his franchise players and coaching staff and front office executives while you haven't even been in

the main rotation consistently that says as much to me about anything come on Mala watch related then we'll be able to glean from game tape as he goes into his first season where he's actually going to firmly be in the rotation yeah and that's all the question from the goon asking if come on Mala watch gets around 20 minutes per game this year that would feel fair if he's doing what we expect him to do and building upon what he did last year and what he did this summer nothing's given but the opportunity is definitely there you still don't want to overload him with too much to not hinder his growth we see it happen so often in all sports young players bill bad habits because they're asked to do too much too soon now you take a guy 10th overall and a lot of things that come on Mala watch is been able to do and what he's been able to achieve is from natural ability natural feel for the game and some things that are just natural characteristics that he has he has an inclination to work hard he is extremely personable he also has an ability just to communicate

in a way where when I ask him about the other day and I was like man you talk so much like you are so vocal on the court where did that come from was it John Shire was it Kyle Corver was it Lual Deng like was it a mentor that you've had that told you how important it was to communicate and he went way deeper than I ever thought he would go he was like no man like he's like been God forbid like one of my guards gets hurt because I'm not talking enough I wear that like that's my responsibility so like the role of protector and brothers keeper and I'm the last line of defense everything runs through me as the center that's one of the hardest things to understand Alan Williams told us that's one of the hardest things to understand as a big man and this young man turned 20 years old three weeks ago and understands that already like the easy stuff is going to come to him and a lot of the easy stuff he just hasn't picked up because of how fresh the game is to him but like those little things is kind of why you'll see him make exponential growth is because the things

that he understands already don't show up on the stash sheet which he told you but the things that will stop on the stash sheet is what he's still learning and I think that once he learns that you have a guy who has the opportunity to make an all star all NBA all defensive level mark on this team so long as he keeps taking the right steps like having his third year option exercise. Yeah and we'll have more to speak on in terms of command and his potential defensively in our third segment so be on a lookout for that part of our conversation at the end of the show but what I can't say is that with command is it's fun to look at the potential that he has on that end of the floor because beyond beyond counting stats and all of that I think the impact of his presence it says a lot I think to be a high level communicator and to be consistent there you are naturally going to involve yourself more in the game if you're just communicating if you're

speaking say what you see is the simple baseline of it especially in his position if he's doing those things consistently he's putting his team as in position to be successful as well as himself and for a team that wants to take a leap which we'll be speaking to on today's show as well on the defensive end of the floor it's going to take marginal skills like communication and tanner with impact skills like presence at the rim deflections all different types like defensive rebound and stuff like that that's going to ultimately shifted from being disruptive to being dominant and that's what the topic of today's show is disruptive to dominant that's a great path for him and and I think that the makeup of this team allows him still even with mark Williams being out for as long as we expect him to be out until probably February may be March having the small ball five that they have we've talked about having also iqadara who gives a different look at the four five position the five position there's pressure on command mala watch

but it's still to a lesser extent but it's still somewhat of a nice to have because there is a level of expectation of okay he like we need to keep it in our mind that he might not be there yet he might be there yet and that's great it'll be nice to have but if he's not our entire season doesn't ride on it now that there's between being you know eighteenth fifth or fourth maybe rides on that but like the entire season doesn't ride on that and I think that that should alleviate some pressure from him because it's hard to have a 20 year old guys when playing basketball for six years seven years to say hopes of our franchise they rest on you brother like that's not what they're asking they're saying hey like how ready are you the ready or you are the better we are but like just be some level of ready and that's the expectations of him similarly we're out song while we're Ryan like defend the athletic be active knockdown threes that's your path come on defend use your size leverage

your size be a good screener cut well run the floor out work your matchups not necessarily when your matches out work your matchups tire your matchups out that's what we need anything more than that perfect and I think that simplifying things for people sometimes I don't want to like put on the coaches that like I know what they're saying and telling them that I'm doing a better job of that than them but when it comes down to when you break down the game it really can be that simple for somebody like come on model us because everything that I just outlined and said it's something he can do very well to getting on day one of this upcoming season yeah when you bust it down especially in terms of just the the most simple level of communication what's going to stick for someone is okay gave me three objectives just these three things just these three things might even only be two do this do that you'll get what you need you'll be on the beat and path that we need you to be on my complicated is like I mentioned yesterday joy not is from my understanding someone that knows

the science of simplifying the complicated come on model watch turns to talent lie writing on that young man shoulders in terms of what this franchise desires to be and what they desire to be as immediate as this season alone he's naturally a literal and figurative big piece to all of that if you don't come and tell him a we got 25 things we need you to check this box off this season you think you're for it first let me finish reading all 25 of those things you ask me this question is like no we have this this and this or just this and this for you can you do these two things it's not to get an answer at real time it's to watch it develop over time point being with that you talked about the readiness factor of him I think it's as simple as him beyond the shadow of a doubt being more ready to be a contributor consistently this season than he was last season at the end of the season that alone says everything for me because as long as he can provide eight impact and impact especially in this emergency scenario they're

in without mark Williams that's a better spot than they were in last season when they were trying to figure out okay is he ready is he not ready let's see what it looks like on the valley okay he's too good to be there is he good enough to be in the rotation now okay again certain match up he is but when teams do xyz to him his impact isn't there so we got to figure it out then he has a summary that he did that showed to figure out a lot of the things that they were hoping to albeit against lesser talent he still did it this value and just doing it and showing that your capable of it now I'm seeing okay take what you showed to be able to do the confidence that comes with that as well take these objectives maybe just two maybe just three and let's see just how ready you are I think the readiness question isn't a question it's just a matter of to your point how ready is he is he just slightly ready is he ready ready or is he over delivering type of ready which was as as we know what shifting is greatly for this franchise and that's I think the best way to think about that with those objectives is give him a couple to begin the year and he might knock him out the park immediately and then it's like oh well we can give you three more

and we could be 15 games in a year and he's boom flying colors those first six and it's like oh we can give you three more because once he knocks those out that's why again like it's like building blocks of his game he's so mad he's right learn from learn from granny gill yes sir big rocks right so like think about the big rocks and the little rocks of like okay these big things sealing people like things that just become habits that like you don't forget like you know all of book is driving this way and I seal a guy he'll get dropped off to me for a dunk or it's a layup I'm seven two two fifty people it's hard to get around me like all those things that building habits because you are building this player that has all the talent in the world to fit not just to be what you need him to be this year for this new successful it's like no we're building him up into being a player that can be our franchise player in 2032 2033 when this young man is 26 or 27 years old all these things that he was doing playing for this team right now that

might win 45 or 48 or 50 games as a 20 year old when he's 26 27 he's like oh yeah like this is you know now I'm doing the stars stuff all these things that you are icing on the cake and I think that that's what it is and who knows how quickly he can retain and learn these things you could be a objective 15 by new years who knows but he might get stuck on objective nine for a while but that's the beauty of the development of a player like a mom watch there's no doubt in my mind that he eventually will get there it's a matter of how quickly he can go to the next phase the next phase next phase the goal was to kind of ease him into it but now you're forced to give him a little bit more and see maybe certain things are easier to pick up the other certain things he might have already and they just don't know yet but again that's the fun of it to see kind of where he is with a consistent workload rather than a hey we can pull him when we need to we don't need to do this like trial by fire let's get him out there you're gonna learn some tough lessons hey you got to get over a screen like that on a guy right there you got to show a hand show your hands like this

guy's made three or four three come on like that's gonna happen as well but again he's a type of guy who feels like okay I can't let that mistake happen twice I got to I got to let that happen so I think that's something that he showed to be good with last season though too you might make a mistake but are you repeating the same mistakes time and time again so might get caught in limbo and drop covers one one possession they're gonna come back and test doing that exact same matching with the exact same personnel the very next possession are you ready to atone from mistakes in real time are you someone that's going to repeat the same ones three or four times over he showed to be someone that's a lot more of the former than the latter thing it's called one time the next time you try that again he's either blowing it up or he's taking away options to where you got to go to something else and I think this this being able to fill in the gaps in real time to be receptive of those things as action is happening because there's a lot going on especially for someone talks and communicates as much as he does just being ready in time on task and scenarios like that says

a lot to me and I think there's there's definitely a marathon approach there's a marathon approach to everything that is the command model wise project and I don't want that to be missed with you being able to also have urgency on your marathon you can have the long term mentality but you can look at your short term objectives as opportunities like I'm not sitting there just taking my time going through the motions I'm trying to knock these walls down to get to this next domino and see what this next one talking about so I can go and meet that they're what I need to raise my frequency and doing so and as I'm doing that gaining confidence objective as objective after objective now all of a sudden I'm turning into an impact player for a team that needs it at that position come on model watch Ryan done both have their contracts exercises options of their contracts somebody say it's a big deal small deal I say it's a done deal we'll continue to talk about that after our next break the window depot is more than just a window store some might say that from

Kobe Brea Ryan done reshier flimming come on mile watch and co-opete they represent the next generation I asked coa about them at media day and he said that we got it we got a group of messages going on together those young guys are kind of showing me the ropes you know well he didn't call them young guys they're all old guys the hip but you know coa talked about he and also the Guadaro you know having a little bit of relationship both being from the valley also giving them some tips about how to not let being at home be a distraction and how it works in your favor and it was also cool I asked also how far those guys went back and he's like man I started working out with coa when he was in high school and I was like dude is something in every year he got bigger and better and stronger and we heard out on Williams say the same thing about coa Pete as well this decision regarding Ryan done and come on mile watch these decisions because they're independent decisions only fortifies what the sons are trying to do and achieve with this group and the proof has been in the process and in the results with these young guys it has been and I

think it shows up more than anything in their habits you can talk about development as the big umbrella but you can't get to the overarching thing that you want in terms of guys hitting on their development and individual skills and collectively taking steps together if it's not rooted in your habits I can see you to come back to the workers environment that they have and to give it time Dylan Brooks might just be pulling up to mortgage match up center by himself this is a work culture as you're not said correct and they're not shy about it as he said to and I think that way that when it becomes a habit of your top guys everybody else sees that standard it says they have no excuse to not be putting in more work than those guys because they had those guys at the top have significantly less to prove to the franchise to their teammates and to the rest of the league compared to the new guys coming in there trying to find their way find out what's my niche with this team so that I can get to making impact and taking steps in my process whatever that might be

Ryan's is different from her shears is different from osos different commands different from coos everybody's situation is different and I think that's a unique thing but it's a good thing don't have two guys trying to run their race in the same lane everybody's in their own lane so you can look over at someone else and rather it being competition I gotta tear you down crabs in the barrel mindset to build myself up we can rise together and it's better for the team if we're doing those things but it all continues to come right back to the most simple thing of it all are you working what's your capacity you're working at are you showing up first step second step are the things being demanded upon you clear and concise answer firmly yes based off of the things we've seen development wise from guys now the next step what's the what's the evolution within it all if you're asking Rishi or Fleming and we want you to start attacking some more closeouts because the three ball is not always there if you're above the break okay cool when Rishi gets in a

in a scrimmage is he letting the fly because he wants to continue to grow his three ball or is he listening to those objectives and getting downhill or finding unique ways to go about those objectives the answer is clearly been yes with those kind of fine tuned objectives within an objective and I think that really speaks to the alignment of the players especially the young capacity and what they're being preached to from the coaching staff it's not just during not it's a bunch of the other delegates that he has assistant coach wise as well as people in the firm room and things like that that look at specific positions everybody's moving on the same accord and I think that helps to get the most out of these young guys a little bit sooner maybe potentially than they would in other situations or scenarios I think about that and I think about ecosystems and teams who have done it properly and it's been a decade now decade plus but I think about the Toronto Raptors and in the span of a span of a couple of years you had Norman Powell Fred Van Blee Pascal Siacum and Chris Boucher all come up through Raptors 905 and then eventually come

out of that as contributors to the Toronto Raptors three of them contribute to an NBA championship run greatly they don't win a championship without any of those three guys who all by the way became all stars like like Norman Powell was a second round pick who spent a lot of time in a glee Fred Van Blee a lot of time in a glee undrafted Pascal Siacum late first round pick a lot of time in a glee sounds kind of familiar to what we're talking about here with the Phoenix Suns and these guys aren't too proud to commit and believe and buy into what's being asked them when they're playing in TMP with the Valley Suns you saw it they took their reps seriously we saw Kamal Mollewatch in Rashir Fleming fly across the country during an Eastern Conference road trip play in some games with the Valley Suns and then fly back and rejoin the team in Atlanta I think it was this past season now they probably wanted to get and enjoy all the things that Atlanta had to offer and they're one trip to Atlanta of the year but they also that's a lot to do and a lot to ask of players and that shows how seriously they take their their development but also the fact that you have a

guy like Kong Gillespie who didn't necessarily do it with this franchise but his value the value of him going from being undrafted to a two-way player to now 48 million dollar player Jordan Goodwin a guy who sharpened his tools and gained his edge by being a G league player and then now 20 million dollar guy in the league you're able to if you take that the right way and if we expect to see co-spin some time with the Valley Suns he's another example where he can look right at the guys who are his peers who can say hey manage you mentioned there they want to be successful too look what it did for me I was able to work on this I was able to dominate here and there kept my confidence where it needed to be I was able to work on this and get better at this and figure out these principles in game situations and game speed to where you might it might make you ready by game 30 35 40 the playoff run whatever it is all these steps are super important and to have examples and people who can tell you and show you why it's so important you believe it more and that's how you

get this environment ecosystem of improvement that the Suns are cultivating yeah for sure and I think that that goes kind of hand to hand with what I talked to Dylan Brooks about on the first day of training camp on Tuesday just asking him about co-work he's been outspoken about his relationship with co-work co-spin outspoken about his relationship with Dylan and I was Dylan on the topics we talked about how much of an advantage is having an NBA ready body upon arrival like how much is that allowed for you to now instead of focusing on the weight room I got to get my weight up where I got to improve these kind of weaknesses on the body so that I'm ready to take the hits and the physical demand of NBA game you know after worry about that you can focus more on skill and the mental processing of it all between the ears and he said yeah that's a big thing and he said a whole lot of other things but he said he doesn't worry about co-appeat verbatim he said that because they have guys around that can teach or willing to teach and know how to

go about that Miles Bridges someone else very much akin to Dylan Brooks on understanding co-work situation scenario on how you can bestow wisdom upon someone like that and co-work mentioned like yeah those two guys in particular text messages conversations in person conversation in the line of fire like yeah we got smoke for each other because we're not we're not wearing the same jersey right now different color jersey but we can also still teach you might be teaching you by giving you that work but you're still learning and I can go and talk to you about hey man I was able to spend baseline because you was playing me a little bit too high in the post you give that to someone like Pascal C. Yackem he's gonna take that and he's gonna spend and do the exact same thing so to do that better apply a little bit more pressure here but keep that back foot a little more firmly planted so that I don't think that windows there maybe that makes them make a different decision like there's just so many different moments like that that they can just speak on in real time that they're gonna naturally put all of those guys in better positions to both be successful with the Phoenix songs and maybe realize things a little bit sooner in their process because of it and it's it's it

permeates throughout the roster you hear Devon Booker say I'm a sponge to people who came before me I listen to what they have to say and I take that with me so Devon Booker is gonna be listening and taking heed to advice that he gets of course co-opita is and that's what Miles Bridges said when he talked about Koeh and Rashir and Ryan and the young guys like they're listening it's some some younger guys turning their head or you can tell when guys aren't being attempted and not looking at you in the eyes or like when ones just do going to stop talking but like that's not who they are that's not the type of team that this has that they that they've that they've put together here and that goes into the type of guys that they are looking to have guys who fit best believe that teams are franchises in front offices do their due diligence when they're thinking about a player when they're talking to their college coaches and their high school coaches because they definitely do that you're gonna invest millions of dollars until a 20 year old you're gonna ask everybody that they you can ask about who they are and what type of players they are what type of people they are what type of listeners and learners they are they got these specific guys for a reason Ryan done

last is from one regime to another for a reason he fits that mold as well all of these guys fit that mold to where when I go back to what I talked about you look at this roster you see guys and as the more established players you see people who could all into their shoes and become like them and they those specific guys are listening and learning to be more like that so it's exciting to see how ahead of the curve they are this year and next year as well as they're still young guys but when they shed that young label are they going to be contributors can they contribute at a high level can they continue to sustain the Phoenix Suns way that this team talks so much about trying to do day after day and that's the excitement about this upcoming season but how you can find some comfort and where this franchise is headed in the direction and we talk about guys hitting and becoming stars but regardless of that can they maintain who this team is and the identity that they want to carry over from year to year and that's what they're trying to do we'll talk more about that identity

site head to go pH in x dot com slash events to get everything you need to know and get signed up to go and enjoy that event next Saturday now we're enjoying this conversation about the youth of the Phoenix suns Stephen I know I mentioned you know we typically just at beginning of the show when there isn't news to react to but you were at the facility today you were able to talk to Jordan hot Colin Gillespie miles bridges your big takeaways from day three of sons training camp and what you were able to hear and see from everybody yeah miles bridges aligns with a lot of what the sons want to do and how they can go about doing the things that they've shown to do maybe even a little bit better or a little bit more packedfully or just in a unique way so talk with Colin Gillespie and Jordan not specifically about this one but through the lens of miles they have their

possession gaining group last season that group like we mentioned at the top of the show Colin Gillespie Jordan Guin Ryan Dunn also you Darryl Mark Williams those five guys you have five of them last season other guys chip in when opportunity kind of presents itself there but those five guys were the consistent ones in the rotation that wore those particular qualities what's different from those five guys and miles bridges he has a certain stature in comparison to those guys and tandem with a certain athleticism and height to a certain extent excluding Mark Williams that none of the other guys really has to the extent that he does what can he do for the team in that respect those guys maybe you might be able to box out also you get Darryl with certain guys that's not going to work if his miles bridges similarly what Jordan not mentioning in specific was that with miles and we're talking about their office and rebound in process here

if you don't put a body on miles different from if Gillespie or Guin was getting their old boys which they did a lot of last year a guard against that old boy you're not really going to see too many I was running good with had a few but you're not gonna see too many guards getting put back tapping is like that with miles those aren't put backs and those aren't grabbing rebound go back outside the three point line reset the clock 14 seconds and play off of that miles might just go pound dribble shoulder at the chest time I'll talk oh he might just go I read the flight of said shot and I just coming in for a put back dunk which is not something that we've consistently seen from any one of those five guys that we just got done mentioning so I think that stands out first for me miles being looked at as someone who can be a very high level possession gainer for them and for them to see that vision in them seeing that he's not someone that has done that in his NBA career yet to see that in them and to be challenging him in that sense a lot what does your mind go when you think about first b's yeah I do think this is a foregone conclusion but it's good that

the team is handling business the way that they handle business I think that it's important to note that and it would have been a thing if this didn't happen with one of the two guys come on mile that's more less of a concern or worry but Ryan none I think there were some questions around him so I think it's a reaffirmation boom with what you talked about with bridges him needing the basketball the top of the key to be effective this is what comes to mind I'll caution you or encourage you to go into this with an open mind and this is kind of my answer because last year with Dylan Brooks is a reminder that when somebody finds themselves in a new position in a new situation yes you didn't take into account what we've seen from them because it's a large sample size Miles Bridges is not a second or a third year player but Dylan Brooks should be a reminder that players and people can reinvent themselves and new stages of their careers until their career is over so I think that Miles Bridges being in a new situation having strengths that maybe he didn't get to showcase during these last few years in Charlotte and also having a new coaching

staff that's going to challenge him and put him in positions that he maybe has never been in before or it's been a while since he's been in them because they trust him to be in these positions or believe that he can thrive in situations that he might not have even believed that he could thrive in himself so I recognize the cautious belief or approach to who he is or who he is not on the floor but I do think there should also be some trust and belief in who Jordan could be bring out of him now I think it is if we end up seeing the same thing like all day maybe this experiment isn't what we thought it would be but he did talk to about that today exploiting and finding mismatches with the four guys who all have the ability to play make for themselves and others and seeing if that experiment works but the good thing that we've talked about with this roster makeup if it doesn't work and it's ugly after 10 to 15 games I don't think you abandoned it after five but if it ain't working after 10 to 15 maybe you start to move things around a little bit and try and experiment a different a different thing or two yeah it maybe it's a

situation that where it does work out like that where they're just only spending time on the court in full all four in a quarter at once to start a game out of the halftime break and potentially to close a game that might be having to have eight and a half nine inch minutes might not even touch on average double digits nine and a quarter is worth the time exactly to that point so that's not that's not an indictment against the group you just want them to be able to work together to an extent you have rotations you have other good players calling the lesbians going to factor into right especially closing line ups talked about also you get our effect or into things might not necessarily plug one of those guys away but whoever it is starting they might be alternating depending on matchups and things like that so that's definitely something to keep in mind with that for that for some group of guys right there uh next thing that stood out to me um and this kind of goes ties in a little bit with what boom was speaking on miles is ambidextrous

I talked to miles about his ambidextarity at practice today um long story short I think he started shooting right handed then he broke his hand his right hand at some point when he was young like maybe seven or eight years old so he started to teach himself to shoot left handed that he did most things right handed broken right hand figure things out now he shoots left handed when you have someone that doesn't have a handedness because they're good going either direction to shoot or pass and we see him put up right hand floaters at an effective rate too over the course of his career that's different so game plan wise which is what miles spoke to you can't strong or weak me if I got the ball and pick and roll and throw it I'm comfortable going either direction so good luck with that if you're gonna give me an advantage and I already want to get pain as it is you just made my job easier because you're not taking away you're taking away one hand I'll just go the other way um the weapon that that is because there are as good as guys are in the NBA there's only a select hand few that you can say

are comfortable making the same passes with their left hand that they are with their right hand and that select few guys are the elites of the elite now we know miles is not Nicole the yoghurt so I don't want to present it as that unfortunately but I will say about miles is that so new situation they never know but continue checkmate I think the the point being with it is that you in scenarios where certain guys and might only be able to play make from the left post because that allows for their right hand to be free to make passes off of and if they're doing it from the other the other post passes are going to be as accurate and not gonna have the same zip or accuracy or sharpness with them what miles it does not it doesn't matter so if miles is screaming for someone you don't have to say okay miles we need you to scream on the right side so you can get your left hand free it doesn't matter you can go with the flow and be adapted was the game goes that's a wrinkle that takes things to another step for the sons because regardless of where miles is if you're getting them to if you're getting it to

someone opposed or he's in the short world off of them in book or jaylin he's gonna be able to make decisions with either hand and that snappy cadence of the passing talked about this is a lot in the film session I did on him it allows you to keep and create new advantages and ways where last season advantage would either passed up window wise or they wouldn't have been able to exploit set advantages to the extent that having miles around enables them to yes all of that night I agree I think about like the again it brings you back to like thinking about just having different options different counters a lot of different things to choose from to where it's not one dimension it's not too dimension so many different dimensions with Jordan not who likes to have flexibility with the things he does on both ends of the floor because it supplies the both ends of the floor and miles bridges but on the offensive end as well and that's again kind of leans into what mile says now I want to ask the question to you yeah I want to ask the question spike I did see a little bit of it I'm not that well versed to understand but from based on everything I know it

takes a lot of work and time to do that so I am impressed by that and also floored by how very genuinely he was into all of that but we can get into that conversation at another time but speaking of social media and stuff like that and I'll ask the question to the chat as I ask it to you Steven and you Aritan do we look at it as nothing something or everything that yesterday when social media shared a clip of Ose Gidaro kicking the ball out to Devin Booker for a catch and shoot three pointer the lineup on the court wearing purple in practice with Ose Gidaro Devin Booker Jalen Green Dylan Brooks and Miles Bridges something nothing or everything it's something but it's a predictable something for me we knew I was going to be a five-man lineup that Jordan I was going to use at some point so naturally if you're running five you're going to see them doing things there so it's something but something to an extent for me because it was that was an obvious you only got two centers at the time don't do don't do a do I like that respect to a drop but we know that come on and Ose are going to

be the lion's share of minutes at the five are gonna be with those guys so naturally and training camp you gonna see that so it's something but I want to take in the wise words of Jordan not I'm not gonna take it I'm not gonna take it there man I'm not gonna take it there all right I'll take it there it means it means absolutely everything we got it yeah context matters ask me that the answer probably you probably expect ask Aritan that you know what your answer is going to be my big thing with it is that like obviously Ose is the goat and all that so we can put that aside but I mean teams aren't gonna practice how they're not gonna play you're right that's my biggest thing it's like we saw Devin Booker on the floor we saw Jaylen Greene on the floor those dudes are concrete in the starting lineup seeing Ose there was a little bit like the concrete's drying a little bit for Ose but it's still wet if you know what I mean yeah yeah yeah I feel that um I'll just move that on to the next question that was gonna ask if there's something nothing or everything

you're like I'm gonna go foul I'm gonna go foul I don't think that was too crazy that wasn't too crazy it wasn't it wasn't ridiculous I just got this call me I've got oh these guys don't know concrete that's what it was clear something nothing or everything Devin Booker's talked a lot about his number change you did a little spot with NBA social media they asked him about wearing he talked about his dad wearing 15 in Missouri and professionally he talked about it being his childhood number so it feels comfortable for him but then they asked him what's going to be different about number 15 Devin Booker and he said simply two words shoot more something nothing or everything something hmm part of why I asked him hey man I know the sentimental stuff and I don't want to undermine or speak over that because that matters so I want to acknowledge that antenna with is there other things is there a switch that's being flipped for you he essentially said yes and then he went on and other capacities to double down the same day and then triple down a couple of days

after that with NBA social so it is definitely it's it's everything that's a lot you want your you want your best player to be attacking in the tag mode yeah and we unfortunately didn't see Devin fully in attack mode for reasons that we've documented all all season so now you're gonna go there clearly wasn't 100% and Tana would get in the attention from a defense the best defense and a league and Tana with the usage and the wear down effect of that over the course of 80 plus games over the course of that season there's gonna be some drawback there from to be in the healthy space as he mentioned as healthy as he's ever been going in a train to camp a number change that goes in Tana with him having a mindset shift even in the slightest capacity that's everything everything I mean everything yeah it seems like we're moving slightly away from point book more to like ball dominant book that seems like the the theme of the training camp so far ball dominant book and it's funny too because like I think back real quick to the the clip of him I mean it ties

in together because it's catching two three the jumper is pretty is ever but I wonder I wonder if like they posted that knowing that people were gonna like this guy's in purple this guy's in orange all these they know they're calculating this is the social media team that knows what they're doing they know people are gonna look and also it's all getting clearance before it's posted last minute so and speaking of those clips we did see a Jordan Goodwin deflection boom dunk and another video of him in the second unit all kind of yelling so the types of things that can get you excited and then Jordan not saying that there's been a high level of competition for this team and speaking of competition and things that are on the horizon before we get to the preseason game on Monday fan fest tomorrow night at mortgage match-up center don't know if any of you all in the chat plan on going but us three in the studio you might catch us there so if you want to say what's up chat sons basketball IRL as the kids say we will be there dang I was like how do you

do fellow kids that was really bad in real life if you guys like to talk in person about some sons basketball stealing an eye and if Breckle Bob will be at mortgage match-up center for fan fest tomorrow so putting that out there hope to see you all out there so we can be back in the arena they'll feel good be back in the arena with sons basketball going on days away three days away well four days right now but three days away tomorrow and fan fest is here from the preseason opener so pop out pop up say what's up tapin looking for it today it's always fun to see the way the fans embrace the team the way that the team embraces the fans that do pull up for fan fest and the way the sons is a franchise find ways to uniquely present the fans with opportunity to spend time with the players right maybe you just that part Ryan Dunn maybe you get your shoe sign by Devin Booker maybe you get a fist bump with with Dylan Brooks maybe you get come on I'm all the way to throw you a high the highest of high five like that's little stuff like that

little stuff matters it adds up especially when you're speaking to the community side of a franchise representing set community that they're existing you can't do that if you want out there slapping fives and fist bumping giving hugs touching elbow spending time having conversations listening to people yeah like that stuff matters and there's no better time for sons fans to have that chance to do so then when they're all in the same building at the same time and that's what fan fest is therefore I'm looking forward to what the team has to extend opportunity wise to the fans this is for y'all that's what I'll pull up for that absolutely that's about the community instaker I will say it's in 26 hours if you start driving like right now you might be able to get I've never made the I've never made the I've never made the truck got a PJ man I've never made the drive from Jersey to Phoenix but I feel like 26 hours remember when he went to remember when he was in Detroit he was in DC oh yeah all the games that does not speak to me as someone who's driving especially

because there was a rap in the session of the spring of man he got the spring of man he's riding this is a PJ man he got the saintly or a helicopter like bra in the way he moved in and stacker and emphasis on the stack emphasis on the stack and stack moving different fair fair but also but if not for fan fest tomorrow definitely hopefully all star pavrali all who are in the value or in the surrounding areas would love to see you all at fan fest tomorrow to hang out a little a all I see is laughing the movies I just see anything denying it if you got it you got it we're just trying to get like I'm writing to you sound not brother hey oh bad but at the beach I we appreciate y'all hanging out with us on this Thursday talking about training camp day three talking about Ryan Dunn come on mile watch their place in the Phoenix Suns present and future and what it all means moving forward for the freckled mombo you can follow at freckled mombo also somebody
