What's going on everybody? Welcome back. Another episode of Bischoff and Brown right here on the Detroit Lions podcast. I'm Russ Brown. He's got Bischoff. We are a little bit different today than we were last week at this time. Last week it was kind of like doom and gloom. Not necessarily saying that everything's been fixed and it's all sunshine and rainbows. But we're not feeling as bad today. Just kind of seeing the way that some things are happening around the league. It's kind of been an odd start to the year for a lot of teams that we thought were going to be good and they are not good. IE the Green Bay Packers last night losing at home to a very bad Atlanta Felicom's football team. Didn't really see that one coming. Thought that that might have been a get right spot for the Packers and everything looks messed up. Hopefully that's not the case for the Detroit Lions this Sunday against the New York Jets at home in Detroit, at Ford Field.
So we're going to dive into that. We'll do a preview on that. We kind of recap the Saints in the Bills game. Kind of voiced our frustrations and opinions on the defensive side of the football. But we'll get into the preview here on the New York Jets and the Lions. But Scott, my man, how the hell are you? I'm good. I hope we see some good stuff on Sunday. Yeah. I'm with you. I'm with you 100%. Hopefully there's some cleanup on the defensive side. I know it's one of those things where it's like, hey, probably shunnets. It's like two caught up in on this game because it is the New York Jets. But this is a better New York Jets football team than we've seen in recent years. Yeah, they do play a little bit more physical. They've got some defensive pieces there that they're starting to build around specifically in the secondary. Still don't have an interception under Aaron Glenn, but still some impressive defensive pieces there. And offensively, they've got Garrett Wilson. They've got Breeze Hall. Kenyne Sadek, a young titan, some offensive lineman there for sure.
They definitely pose problems. They do. And it's just going to be in some ways just what is the Lions want to do certain things and the Jets are going to want to do kind of the opposite in some ways. Yeah. We'll see. We'll see how it shakes out. I think the Lions have advantages specifically in offense. But Kenyne's score enough to force the Jets to be uncomfortable in offense, maybe. Yeah. And I think so. I think that can happen. I think the Lions ability to run the football could be there. But also just the playmaker aspect of things with Amin Rassane Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam Laporta, the difference makers that those guys are, which Jared got thrown the football who's playing at a really high level right now. And I think it's going completely unnoticed because of the one the loss, but to just, you know, with how everything is on the defense, all eyes are on that side of the football
right now. But Jerry golf played really well last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills. And I kind of expect him to play pretty well here at home against the New York Jets. So we'll jump into our week three preview Lions Jets at Ford Field. We'll start with the offensive side of the football. It seems like the Lions are going to get some reinforcements back up front. There's a concerning foot injury right now with Ben Barch. He's had some loose Frank stuff in the past. And normally when those injuries happen early in a career, they tend to reoccur down the line similar to like a hamstring and ankles and things like that. He has not really practiced it all this week. And I don't think he's going to play or start at left guard. But it does sound like Krish Mahogany will be back for Detroit. But most importantly, it sounds like Blake Miller will be back. And I think that's far more important than Mahogany or Barch because the Lions I think could get by with maybe Larry Borg. I can't believe I'm saying that Larry Borgam at left guard or even Miles Frazier at
left guard who surprisingly didn't get any run against the Bills with how bad things were up front. I was a little surprised. So that's concerning considering I've been really hanging my hat there on Miles Frazier saying, Hey, give him a chance. Give him a chance. Why they don't? I don't know. It's just not as good as I think. But let's dive into the offensive side here. Things that we're looking for offensively. Is there anything in specific for you that you're going to be paying attention to when we get to Sundays game against the Chets? Well, the Lions are going to run the ball. But in some ways, the desire is to have some big running place, which you're going to get from a player like Gibbs. This sounds just nuts, but you don't want to score too fast. As it's coming out of my mouth, it's like you're a moron. Yes, you want to score as much as you can. But you don't want to necessarily want to give.
We saw a little bit of that in the Saints game. And once the Saints got their offense rolling, Lions had a hard time stopping them. So you don't want to be in a position where you're playing in a game like that again. Right? I would think that they're going to run the ball real heavy in the first quarter. And they're going to take shots and do all that stuff. But we'll see what the Jets defense looks like. I do think that Blake Miller coming back is important because we're going to see a little rookie on rookie action. I would assume what David Bailey. And I'm curious what you think. But I would love. I'm really interested to see how the Lions approach that match up. I don't necessarily think it's a great idea to just pass that the same way all the time. I think you've got to keep him guessing in some ways. So some jump sets here and there. Get your hands on him and make him run through contact.
I think that would be the way I would hope they would approach things. But you could also throw a tight end on that side and ask Miller to kind of just set short and protect his inside shoulder. You could do that kind of stuff. But that limits your offense. So I'm interested to see what the Lions, if they can sustain drives what they look like on second and third down. I think they'll have every opportunity to do really good things on offense this week. And if they get into situations where they do want to throw the ball, I think they're they have significant advantages there too. So we'll see what happens come Sunday and how this game shakes out. If you can do that, that's good. That's good this week. Yeah, and I think it's great that you point out not to score too soon, eat up some clock.
It's interesting. Sam Hopin, who is a really good follow for the data and analytic side of things, especially with scheme and play calling tendencies for an offense or a defense. At Sam Hopin on X, he has got something posted every week after week one, week two, so on and so forth. He's got some data posted offensively and defensively right now in the NFL. The Lions from a clock drain play rate, so my guess is teams that are taking their time using up the whole 40 seconds, so on and so forth, the Lions are actually near the bottom in the NFL at 30th at 3.6% offensively with play clock drain. I think some of that's probably skewed to the fact that they were down 21 nothing last week and they had to go as quickly as they could. As for the New York Jets, they are near the top in the NFL. They are third highest in the NFL at 21.6%. Yeah, thanks.
We'll be curious if there's a lot of running the football here on both sides and teams trying to find an opening, play physical and keep the defensive line out of a rotation and keep just bullying those guys up front if you can. The multi-tied end rate, I think, is super interesting here in Detroit right now. I know the Lions like to try to run a lot of 12 and 13 personnel, but it's not as high as I think maybe we thought it would be. Again, probably skewed to the fact that you were in the hole 21 nothing last week, but going into week three here, the Lions are at 30.4%, which is 19th in the NFL. Surprisingly, the Jets are even higher at 41.2%, which is 10th highest in the NFL for the multi-tied end usage. So yeah, I think we're going to probably say a lot of 12, 13 personnel in this game and to your point, how do you neutralize David Bailey? We all know how explosive he is.
We know that he can really dip that shoulder, run the arc, speed rush to the quarterbacks, again, super explosive, but we've seen it in college when you slide the protection his way, you bring some tight ends his way and chip in things like that towards him. It alters his past rush plan and his path to the quarterbacks substantially. So I would love to see the Lions run at him specifically on the ground. And I think you'll be able to maybe find a Creecer to, per drive to really gash them with some explosive plays because that seems to be a point of emphasis from Dan Campbell during the week talking about more explosive plays on offense and limiting the explosive plays on defense. No defense has given up more explosives this year than the Detroit Lions. So we'll be really curious how it shakes out, authentically. One thing for the Jets defense out there, just just giving some people data and things like that, a light box rate, they are second in the NFL at 62.6%.
So they're going to see a lighter box Detroit should, but maybe, again, maybe not, maybe they switched to a more base defense just because the Jets are going to know that the Lions are going to want to run the football which you get. But if you get those lighter boxes, you should be able to run the football. And then just for people out there on the nickel rate for the Jets, they are the fifth highest in the NFL at 77.8%. The Lions are 53%. 21st in the NFL. The Lions are just... No, no, Minka fits Patrick this week, right? No, it's a little early, but... Yeah, I don't think so. I think there's been some limitations there for no practices at all on the Jets side of things. You get guys out like that as we know in the second area, it's a big positive. So yeah, we'll kind of see how that one shakes out, but super excited for the Lions offense to keep going under droop head saying, I think they've done a fine job. I get some of the frustration for people out there on the second down runs and things
like that. But that's just keeping defenses on and honest and trying to throw a different tendency out there than maybe you're not used to seeing. And also, it's a safe play. If you can get to a third and manageable with this offense, that's a good decision. Yeah, and to me, that's all about not being a third and 10. Correct. Right? That's the comments and the desire there is. Third and 10 is very prohibitive. Yeah. Third and six? Okay, we're okay. Yeah. Exactly. Especially if you're able to get some of these pass catchers running after the catch. So I really hope the Lions are able to spread the football around. We'd love to see James and Williams get going. We'd love to obviously see Isaac Tesla get going. Scottie Montgomery has some interesting comments on Isaac Tesla and how to utilize him and kind of his purpose in the offense. That's obviously a little concern, you know, concerning when you trade up for a pass catcher, you kind of expect that guy to maybe take the next step as a receiver in today's game. But at the same time, we know the Lions want to run the football.
And when you have a guy like Tesla who's been able to crack down on defensive ends and insert into the A or the B gap and pick up backers or safeties inverting down, that's a big positive. And when it's not I'm in Ross St. Brown doing it, that's even a bigger positive. So you got to kind of take the good and the bad there and not necessarily looks, you know, specifically at the box score. Yeah. So to speak. Yeah. And in some ways, maybe this is altering the Lions desire to run 12 personnel because Tesla's on the field so much as a blocker. So you know, that's going to skew the the rate a little bit because he does because he is on the field so much. He's just not producing, you know, not getting targeted. Yeah. We'll see. Yeah. Yeah. We'll see. This could be a really good spot, especially, you know, with again, how they're going to have the lighter boxes. They've done a lot more nickel here with the Jats. So it's a little bit different than what we're used to seeing from Aaron Glenn in Detroit.
Some of the coverage usage here from weeks one and two for the Jets. They run cover one man. So that's a single high safety man coverage on the outside, 15 and a half percent of the time. They run cover two man. So they have a two high shell with man coverage on the outside with the corners. That's at 4.2%. I always think that's an interesting number just because there's not a lot of teams that run cover two man anymore. From the zone coverage perspective, there's no team in the NFL right now running coverage two more than the New York Jets at 35.2%. They run cover six. So that is split coverage, you know, cover four to one side, cover two to the other. That's at 12.7% of the time. That's not the highest in the league. Seattle runs that higher than anybody. Arizona also runs at a really high rate. But you're going to see a mix and match of looks like cover one man, cover two man, some cover two zone coverage, the traditional stuff, which is important when you're trying to get the ball out quickly into the flats and things like that.
When you're playing against that cover two, you're going to have that flats defender. So the line is going to have to find a way to maybe capitalize a little bit on the middle of the field, which they weren't really able to do against the Saints at times. And of course, against the bills, they weren't able to do. But the bills in the Saints also run a lot of like cover three and cover four. So they're able to invert guys down specifically if they go to like a three high safety look. So I think it's going to be really interesting how the jets play the lines. If they want to take away like a dagger concept or those dig routes or just anything over the middle of the field with Laporta and St. Brown, they might have to change some of their coverage tendencies. But just going into this game, that's some of the numbers for the people out there. So it'll be really interesting how that how that kind of shakes out. But switching gears over to the defensive side of the football. Lions as we mentioned last week, it is a just an absolute cluster on that side of the football right now. A lot of bad coverage drops, a lot of blown assignments.
You know, the pressure seems to be relatively consistent. It's maybe not as consistent against the Josh Allen as it was a Tyler Schuck. But at the same time, the Lions defense has got a lot of coverage. Well, it was right now and it looks like they're going to be without Thomas Harper. A Vante Maddox has done for the year with the foot injuries already had foot surgery. Thinking about refreshing the carpet in your home? Now's the time to do it. With COVID-19, you can spot that in automatically open free timepping station on one difficulty Gabrielle College, application finalistic location project, and separate places for app current expenses for life than Retail Ending. It looks like it's going to be Christian Eisen, maybe a little bit of Keith Abney back there. Maybe Thomas Harper plays, I don't really know, but the Lions are really thin at safety. As we've talked about, they need to start developing some of their own guys, Anis Raikstraw, Keith Abney, Dan Jackson, guys that you're drafting. I don't care if they're first round picks or seventh round picks, you're drafting these guys for a reason. You got to start developing them. They've been living and dying with these veteran players on cheap one-year deals. It's worked in the past when you had young rookies stepping up and filling the gaps and filling the void a little bit. The Lions are in a really interesting spot. What do you see or expect here from the Lions' defense going into this week?
What are you looking for, so to speak? Putting the loss last week, thinking about that a bunch, I guess if you're taking a bit of an optimistic view, which I don't think anybody really has, because the sky was falling kind of stuff and understandably so. They have changed so much about everything they do on defense. For years, we've been asking them to play more zone. You're playing man and you can't get home with your past rush and it's just death to your secondary members. They've flipped a bunch of what they're doing and I just wonder, just the optimistic view, is it just going to take a little time against live action for them to gel up and get
an understanding of what everybody else is doing? That's one side of it. The other side of it is for a while, you've been signing players who have come in here because they're man-covered players like Rockius Scent. You're asking them to play a bunch of zone and it might just not be what he's best doing. Thinking about both those things, I hope that over a little bit of time that they look better than they did last week, you're not going to look much worse. That's against Josh Allen and Buffalo. The dynamic in Buffalo is different with Dalton Kincaid moving the way he is right now and with DJ Moore. I know they lost him early in the game. The hope is that the Lions look a little bit more organized, a little more cohesive in the back end and they should be able to do that against the team like the Jets.
I don't think Adanine Mitchell is going to play. Obviously Mason Taylor is out. You're looking at Garrett Wilson and he's a problem, but figure it out. I'm not sure exactly what the Lions are going to do with him. I would hope that we walk away from this game thinking, okay, they look much more organized in the back end of that defense and that would be good stuff. That's the hope. That's my whole point emphasis here. This is a get right spot. This is not a super bowl celebration spot. This is not Lions going to the NFC title game. This is just improved from where you were a week ago. You can only get better. If you get to any worse, I think at that point going into Monday, it is going to be, if it's worse, if you give up 30 points to this Jets team with some of the injuries that you're talking about on the skilled position side, if that's going to be the case, then
you might need to find a different defense coordinator. You might need to fire somebody on the defensive staff just to make a statement. As I said last week, there's just too much talent on the defense side of the football here with Jack Campbell, Aiden Hutchinson, Aleem McNeil, even guys like Rocky Seen and Christian I, I mean, these are guys that you brought in and you've developed some of them. You've signed them. You've done what you needed to do. These guys have got to do what they're supposed to do. If they're not getting coached correctly, then I think that ultimately falls on this coaching staff. So what did you think of Shepard's comments the other day? The eight minute just spewing off why they were in week one and what they were in week two. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I get why he did it. He kind of was trying to get out in front of all the questions. Yeah, he owned it. Yeah. And he owned it. But at the same time, I kind of felt like it was just like, hey, I'm here just to kind
of talk and take up most of this time to avoid the hard-hitting questions that I probably don't have answers to. So I liked it, but I didn't like it at the same time because you can't run from the questions that you're going to get asked. Like you either got to be better or you got to own it, which you kind of did. So yeah. Yeah. What do you think of it? It's kind of, I mean, similar. I thought it was good. Some of the stuff he said. The thing that sort of sticks, and I don't, and you know, what I hope happens is in four to six weeks, we look at, we look at back at Buffalo and Buffalo's tear and everybody up. I mean, they put up, they put up 36, you know, on the road at Houston and we go on. So it's possible that Buffalo is just the best thing in the league. They're a bit of a whack. And right now, I mean, and you know, it's like, okay, well, the margin was super thin to begin with and you played, you played as poorly as you could.
So in, you know, shortly in the future, we'll know what Buffalo's doing to everybody else. And I would think that the Lions will figure it out in some ways. But it doesn't absolve the decision making to make the choices that they made to play, to run the defense the way they did in that matchup, to blitz as much as they did and not get home against Josh Allen. Like, right? Like, and we've been over that. But it's like, so, you know, you just hope that, you know, Sunday is like, like you're saying, a get right spot. And moving into the future, they continue to ascend and look better with their coverage. Because I think they are capable of getting home a little more with their front, with their front four than they have in the past. And I know they're blitzin a lot, but I don't know that the blitz is all that effective.
I don't know. Every game day you show up for your team. Now it's your time. Ask your prescriber about we gov some magletide injection 2.4 milligrams, a G.O.P. one. Call 1 8 3 3 4 we gov or visit we gov.com to view the medication guide and to learn more about we gov. Why wait? We go. To me, it doesn't really seem like I just, I suppose in the first couple quarters against New Orleans, it was. You know, for a quarter and a half against New Orleans and pretty much the entire game against Buffalo, I don't know that they, I don't know they got any more pressure via the blitzing than they did when they did not blitz. And I don't like the idea of pulling a player out of coverage if he's not going to get home. Yeah. So let's hope we see some changes and some improvements there.
Yeah. And I think that's the, the defense like they were so misaligned at times. And, you know, there was, there was a play where the bills were in 13 personnel with all three tight ends to the right side of the formation. And the point man to all of it was Derek Barnes on an island by himself. The entire line's defense of front was shifted to the weak side. And they were just completely outnumbered. They ran a play action boot play to the right where all those tight ends where they had a tight end check release to the flats and was wide open. And it's just, they were so poorly aligned at times in that game and, and they just, they got got and they got beat pretty bad as we saw. And obviously there's no, doesn't seem to be real panic in the, in the forefront and at least out into the public. Maybe behind closed doors or some serious conversations of like, hey, we got to clean this shit up. Seemed like it. Which is probably the case. But, you know, the lines are trying to really justify the movement to the zone coverage while it's not working. And I just wonder is the, is the adjustment defensively just get some better alignment and
switch over to a little bit more man coverage. It could be. I mean, I don't know, you know, we'll see for the, for the coverage folks out there that want to know everything from man coverage perspective. The lines run cover zero, which is when they all out blitz, they're doing it more than anybody in the league outside of the Baltimore Ravens at 9.9%. They play cover one man, 7.9% and then they play cover two man, one percent of the time. So the rest of the time it's been zone coverage. They've run cover two, about 11%. They ran cover three, about 47% and cover four, about 10%. None of those percentages on the zone side are like, you know, higher than the average or, you know, highest in the league or anything like that. They're just mixing and matching their, their coverage is and there seems to be again, a lot of miscommunication on the back half with that. And I think maybe the coverage is that they're calling or just, they're at the wrong time. And specifically against the bills, I think those numbers, you know, from a negative side
are, are definitely on there just because of how poorly they played and, and how much they got beat. So, yeah, I mean, just, you know, real quickly to just kind of wrap up defensively, just, you know, from my side of things, looking to see clear communication, being in better spots and coverage, making more plays on a football and obviously staying on the pressure side of things, just getting, you know, better pressure, but that pressure's got to lead to some production and bringing down Geno Smith and obviously committing to stop in the run is what the Lions have always been under Dan Campbell. So, I'm not, I'm not overly concerned there. Just more or less fixing some of the lows and coverage. If they fix these coverage lows, we're not even having any conversation that we had last week or, or even anything that we're having this week. And I don't even think the media would be reacting this way to Lions losing to the Bills, but just with how bad they played, it was an absolute shit show on that side of the football. So, we'll see what happens. I don't think this is a trap game. I don't think that this is a game that you should lose.
This is a game that you get right. And then kind of from there, you move, you move ahead to Carolina, Arizona, back to back road games. Those are going to be tough. I don't think those are going to be necessarily cake walks. They've always traditionally struggled in Arizona. And I don't think Carolina's a pushover anymore. They're really well coached. So you got to, you got to bring it and you got to keep staying with the good. But then they get into the buy and then they get into divisional play. Hopefully out of the buy they're getting cade mace back. Hopefully they're getting some other players back in the secondary. Yeah. But we'll kind of see. Do you have anything to add that we haven't gotten into on the preview show here? No. No, I will, you know, as, as the season goes on, it'll be, you know, we'll have much more stats and, you know, understanding of things. So, yeah, it'll be always hard after two weeks. Yeah. Well, especially week two is such a, it's a black swan. So it's just like toss it out, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Well, hopefully weekend and hopefully they, you know, can, can stack some wins here in
a row, maybe collect five or six of them before another loss. Maybe, I don't know, win 10 in a row for all I care. I do want to do the fan duel thing for people out there. We don't have a promo code. I got two legs for us. You guys can do it if you want. It's going to be super simple, nothing fancy. But it's always on the offensive side. It's only lions. We've got Gibbs over 70 yards rushing. That's so way. That's so way. Minus two seventy eight. We're just trying to flip some money here. We lost our ass last week and let to JMO over 40 receiving yards minus 240. He has hit this all the time, pretty much outside of last week. So you parlay these two legs together, you get plus 104. Maybe you get a profit boost. But if you put 10 left, you feel like they're going to do everything in their power to get him going. Feels like it. A lot of questions to him to, you know, hey, slow start, not as productive of, he's answering all the questions correctly. But it does feel like this is a spot for him to, you know, maybe get, you know, a 50 or
60 yard bomb and actually connect on it. And score and score. Yeah. So I mean, this, this could, this game could very well be, you know, 24 to 17 or this game could very well be 35 to 10, you know, or 35, 28. I mean, it could be, who know? I don't know. You know, I know that's kind of all over the place. But nobody knows. That's where the lion's defense has us right now. They could, they could step up and fix things and really shut the jets down. But what we've seen this year, they've given up 30 points in each game. Well, certainly, it's going to be easy if you can, if you get home and you can force G. I'll Smith to do, you know, to make mistakes. Things like, like, yeah, like, I mean, I know he's a veteran savvy dude, but like pressure is pressure. So if you can get pressure on him, you know, that'll be good. You see, we'll see what they dial up. We'll see how they, like you said, I think it's the best way to approach it is that incremental improvements means in this particular matchup, better communication, better synchronicity
between, you know, the safety's in the corners and their assignments, all that stuff. I think all that stuff matters when it comes to, you know, giving up points and, you know, big picture of things. So that's what we want to see for sure. Yeah. Well, yeah, we'll, we'll see obviously how this goes. Sunday, one o'clock, on Fox, at Ford Field, if you're going to the game, have fun, be safe. If you're doing the parlay, don't get mad at us if you bet the mortgage sets on you, bet responsibly. Please be 21 and up. You got anything else to add? No, we're good. Go Lions, beat the hell out of the jets. I mean, it's the jets. Come on. Yeah.
