It's big 10 time. This Badger's team has shown you a couple of reasons to be really optimistic heading into Ben State. You are locked on Badgers. Your daily podcast on the Wisconsin Badgers. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. What is going on Badger fans? Welcome to Lockdown Badgers, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Happy Sunday night, Monday morning. It is a great day to be a Badger. I got my Gus Yaldon, Gus Bus sweater on coming off a football week and that was a ton of fun. Today's episode brought to you by Fandall. So I put your knowledge to the test with Fandall Pickham over on Fandall down the Fandall app and play college football pick him for free only on handle. Think for being here today's episode stock up lingering concerns. I've got five of them heading into big 10 play and then reasons to be optimistic. I got a bunch of those headed into big 10 play too.
Let's start there ladies and gentlemen. Five reasons for optimism heading into big 10 play. Here's the first one. Special teams are absurd across the board by the way. It's not a cherry picking thing where it's like man that the Gavin Lomb is awesome. But all these other things are concerns and we're not great here. Almost across the board. Fandall teams is really good for Wisconsin. Really strong consistent. They played at a really high level the entire season so far. You have Gavin Lomb who's seven for seven on field goals. He's perfect and he hasn't been perfect with nervous like he hasn't everything is really looked clean. He's banged it through the middle. It hasn't just inched in or barely got there. He's nailed kicks. He's low to greats. And a good field goal kicker is a weapon in college football. So weapon and in pro football too. But NFL kickers generally are so consistent. At the college level there's such a variance.
And we've seen it as Badger fans right. We've seen it as Badger fans. There's so much variance between good kickers, bad kickers, mediocre kickers, having a good kicker. And I've said this before and I'll consistently say because I don't think it gets talked about enough having a good kicker changes the way offensive coordinators call games. It changes the way you play offense because if it's third and three and you're at the 30-yard line, you no longer need a first down. You have confidence that you can hit a 45-yard field goal. It changes the way you call plays. If it's third and 13 is a better example. You don't feel like maybe you need to pick up the entire first down. If you're on the 35-yard line, you can pick up seven and feel comfortable about kicking the field goal because you have so much faith in that part of your team. It changes everything. It's a very massive development this season and it was something we came into the year wondering, and listen, we're three games in, but through three games, he's been locked in and we came into the year wondering, like, is this going to be a big deal? We think it might be.
It's been an issue for this team for a while. He's been phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. But then you have Sean West as well. Sean West is averaging 45.4 yards per punt. He's been great for going on a year and a half now. Wisconsin is fifth in big 10, pot return average. They're fourth in kickoff return average and they've blocked multiple kicks. They're top 15 percent talent in kickoff returns in the big 10 in average. They're doing well in pot return average. They haven't given up any big plays on special teams from a coverage standpoint. They're kicker seven for seven. They have one of the best punters in the big 10. By the way, they're blocking kicks like prime to Kenbae Mutumbo. Special teams has been ridiculously good across the board. They blocked, we have three blocks so far and almost got a fourth. Nothing more than you really need to say about that except for major weapons so far for the badger. If that continues, it's going to give Wisconsin an edge in big 10 games and close games.
The special teams can win or lose a game in a moment. We've seen it from both sides. They've been tremendous. That's the first reason for optimism heading into big 10 play. Number two is explosives. The second reason I give you is explosive plays on offense. Do you know Wisconsin is the only big 10 team with a 70 plus yard rushing and receiving play this year? Not Ohio State, not Oregon, USC, Penn State, Michigan. Others team that had a 70 yard run or 70 yard pass was Wisconsin's the only school with one of each. It stems from repeatable athletes. It's not necessarily repeatable plays. But Malca Coleman, Abu Samo, Colton Joseph, the Titans, Tyrell Henry, Chris Brooks, Eugene Hilton. There's a lot of explosive twitchy athletes on this offense that we haven't had in a while. They're on debris as well. They've shown it on the field. You've been able to gash teams. Jacob Harris did it last week. You've been able to pick up some chunks of yardage where you don't need to rely on three yards, four yards, four yards, four yards, execute, execute, efficiency, efficiency.
At some point, you get a penalty and you're off its line and trips pulling. Now it's third and 13 and you can't pick it up. Wisconsin may be able to gash this year. I think that's encouraging. You gotta get a little better. They've had some deep shots this year and it's something this team has struggled with for a while. It's relative to the athletes they have. That's something they can repeat and they are going to gash more teams going forward. Number three for me, it's health. Knock on wood. How can you not, from a health standpoint, a team that's been ravaged by injuries the last several years, the offense line is healthy and you're getting men to L back. The running backs are mostly healthy. I know Abba was a little dinged up, but he's mostly healthy. The tight ends, the quarterbacks, the defensive front seven. It's a pretty healthy team coming out of the non-con. That's a big deal. Not all teams are so lucky. There's multiple teams that have lost multiple starters. There's quarterbacks that have been dinged up. Wisconsin is coming out of the non-con with a really tough game against Notre Dame and then two-tune of games going into the big 10 in a pretty good spot health wise.
What is good of a spot as you can expect from three games of actual live hitting? That's a really encouraging thing. Number four, reasonably optimistic, heading into big 10 play. By the way, I've got some people in chat. Thank you for that. I didn't even notice it. Really do appreciate it. Everybody that joins live, sometimes they do it at random hours because I have a random type of life. But also just everyone who watches later, guys, thank you guys and gals. Thank you so much for being a part of this community. From the bottom of my heart, it means a ton of thank you for being with us on this ride. There's number four reason, turnovers. Turns out we can't force them. It felt like it was a bit of mental block. It just felt like you had to get a couple and then we can stop talking about it and just go out and play ball. You had the one Sebastian Cheeks Force that Cooper Catalano gets, Matt Young gets one, make some posts in the front of the pick and that just felt like a watershed moment. We talked about it all last year and we talked about it all off season and through two games we talked about it more. If you're going to go in a Penn State, you're going to win that game. You got at least, you got at least be net neutral in the turnover game.
You probably got to win it. You probably got to be plus one in the turnover game to go into happy, valiant win that game. It was awesome to see them get three. The thing I would point out, and I've said this before a couple of times, but turnovers, there's an element to luck, but there's also an element of disruption of going out and making a disruptive play and you saw that with Sebastian Cheeks. You've seen that with a couple of the turnovers that they had in this game. That post one he just stepped in front of the bad throw, great read by Posa. On the other couple, it was some pressure. It was a little bit of disruption that forced Aaron Throws, forced the Fumble. Those are the type of things you can repeat as a defense. We need to see more and more of that, but getting three was a big deal. The last reason the optimistic heading into Penn State is momentum is a hell of a drug. Confidence is a hell of a drug. It really is. It means something to see yourself go out there, play really well. Then by the way, I can tell you this for a fact. I'm sure not every, I say kid, every young man on this roster is checking social media
all the time, but a lot of them are. A lot of them are. A lot of them go see what the fan base is saying. They go check out podcasts and read news stories. It can be a little difficult when it's always like, what is wrong with this team? Why are we moving forward? Of course, the progress. It's got to just be nice to lay a 50 burger on somebody and demolish them. They bold those that team and it's got to, that matters. It really matters. It shows you what you're working on in practice works. It shows you that this thing is potentially moving in the right direction. Now you got to do it for more than one game for sure and that wasn't a good team for sure, but they went out and they showed proof of concept. You tell me that practice the next day doesn't feel a little more lively. It doesn't have a little more pep. It doesn't have a little more belief having to bend state. If you played another close game and it was 30 to 17 and you're just kind of hanging on and there's probably a few boobards and it's like, gosh, it's just ever going to work.
And then you have to go to Penn State. Like that's tough. That's a tough game no matter what, but now at least you're feeling yourself a little bit. I think that's a big deal. And it doesn't mean it's going, you're going to go to Penn State. This message can be confident too. Right? Like this does not mean you go to Penn State and suddenly you're rolling them, but it does give you some momentum heading into that game. And I think that's important for this team. This team that won four games last year and has struggled at times to build something that feels like it's self-sustaining. I think this was a good first step and I think they needed it. We're going to come back. I'm going to tell you, that was the good. There's a couple reasons why I'm worried heading into Big Template. I'm going to give you those next time I'll look down Badgers, but first a quick second for our tremendous friends of the show. As always, thank you for tuning in, Lockdown Badgers. Visit ADT.com or call 1-800-ADT-ASAP. All right. In the chat, let me know some of your reasons for optimism or pessimism heading into big-tem play. If you have five reasons to be optimistic, here's five reasons to maybe worry a little bit. The first is the Russian game. This team is not good enough through the air to be one-dimensional. I think that's a fair statement. By the way, most teams are like that. Most teams need to be able to run the ball and throw the ball. Most teams need that. Last week, we saw a running game that wasn't good enough. If you take out Colton Joseph last week, they ran for 71 yards on 21 carries against Eastern Michigan against the team, by the way, that Michigan state absolutely gashed on the ground. Michigan state put up 200 plus Russian yards against them and just wore them out.
We couldn't run the ball against them at all. Now, Abu Sama wasn't there. You should be able to run against Eastern Michigan with Darren Dupri, Brian Jackson, Nate Palmer. You should be able to run against Eastern Michigan with Ryan Harrings and Zach Barts in the backfield. Those should be real. Let's just, for those who may not know, Zach Barts, great friend of the show, great. He's in the chat. That's why the name popped in my head. But you got to run the ball better. You got to play complimentary football. You got to wave with it last week. Eastern Michigan is not great. But if you go into Big Ten play, Iowa, Michigan state, Penn state, and you can't run the ball, the better Big Ten defenses are going to make you pay for being one-dimensional. I think some of this is, Emerson Mandel gets back and the offensive line is better. Some of it is Abu Sama's back. But some of it is, there's got to be some better execution. The offensive line has to get more push. And I think at times the running backs have to be a little more aggressive as the wrong word. Because I think Nate Palmer and Brian Jackson run aggressively. But I think a little more decisive is maybe the right word I'm looking for.
It's the running game he has to get on track. Right now you ran for 2.1 yards per carry against Notre Dame. 5.2 against Western Illinois. If you take out that 77-yard run, it's not fair to take it out. But I think it speaks to the consistency of the running game not being there. And then again, last week just wasn't good enough. So that's a concern for me. And I do think getting Emerson Mandel back at guard helps. But I don't think it fixes everything. I mean, Emerson Mandel I really like. I think he's a tremendously powerful interior offensive line. He's kind of he's very mobile for a size. But he's not Larry Allen, right? We're what we're talking about here. Like, this running game's got to get better. It's a concern. Number two for me is efficiency. Specifically offensive efficiency. Cole Joseph is at 63% completion percentage. But it's more go look in the red zone. Wisconsin is dead last in the big 10 at touchdown conversion rate.
So basically when you get into the end zone or into the red zone, how often do you convert that into a touchdown? Wisconsin's converting it into a touchdown at 44%. That is dead last in the conference. And it does feel like that. It feels like they get into the red zone and it gets a little harder. And then they haven't been able to execute the way they need to. I expected Cole Joseph to be more of a weapon with his legs in the red zone. And maybe that's something we're going to see going forward. But I think offensive efficiency is something that is a bit of a struggle right now for the badgers. Henry Gold, by the way, says I'm fine with the 4.5 yards for carry if the passing game can have some explosives. Yeah, I think what you'll end up seeing potentially is if they start going to 4.5 yards per carry, if that starts to become kind of the mean for this team, then the defense is going to back off a little bit and it's going to make the passing game harder. I think that's the concern. I think teams are still stacking the box a little bit against the badgers. But if you can't run efficiently, they're going to stop doing that. And then maybe you can run the ball better. I don't know. But you need that threat of the run game to keep this offensive passing game unlocked, I
think. Number three for me, things I'm kind of worried about. Pass rush. Wisconsin right now is 3-sacks that is 15th in the big 10. And pass rush tackles for loss. I think they're both measures of disruptiveness. How disruptive is your front seven? Your defense, how chaotic is your defense a coordinator in disguising looks and causing issues? Wisconsin is 15th in the big 10 and sacks. They only have three on the year and their 15th in tackles for loss with 11. For reference, Minnesota's got 24. I mean, I'm not just comparing this defense to Oregon or Iowa State. Minnesota's got 24. Maryland's got 18. Wisconsin has 11 tackles for loss. And two of the three opponents they've played. They should have been able to rack up to FL's. The big question here is who's going to show up in a disruptive nature besides Sebastian Cheeks. Sebastian Cheeks has done everything and more that you ask him. He's got two sacks on the year. He's forced a couple of fumbles. He's been absolutely phenomenal. Right. Sebastian Cheeks has been everything has advertised. And then some five star Google review. Yes.
Would love to have another one of these players on the roster. Five stars. Where is the other guys like who else on this team has really created disruptive plays in the backfield has gotten to the quarterback has hit running backs in the backfield. It hasn't been enough of it. And both from a sacks and tackles for lost standpoint, I think that showed up in the box score. It's still early. I think there's still a Nicholas Clayton emergency second to happen here. Maybe it's more of Poston Catalano coming down hill a little bit more. Maybe it's maybe it's a junior poiser who last year was very disruptive for Buffalo and he's still kind of finding his spot in this defense. It's early for all of these like nobody's writing anything off, but there has to be another guy that's going to generate some disruptive presence defensively. There has to be. And if there's not teams are going to just going to start taking Clayton out of the game plan, they'll double them. They'll chip them. They'll roll the pocket away from them. They're not going to let one guy beat them, which is why you need another. I'm not sure who that other is yet. I think it's a worthy piece of concern if you have that.
Number four, passing defense. 15 to the conference, allowing opposing passers to play 63% of their passes. It's just got to be a little stickier. And you can get some of that on C.J. Car. You can also say, well, every quarterback we played so far, every team we played so far is completed at least 60% of more of their passes. And two of these teams haven't been very good. They passing defense efficiency, the coverage, the ability to make it harder on opposing quarterbacks. It has to ratchet up a little bit. They've had too many easy looks. And the stats bear it out. Wisconsin's 15th in the conference in past completion defense at 63%. For reference, I was at 48%. Right? Like you got to make it a little tougher on opposing quarterbacks. And the last one, the thing that going into big 10 play. If you just joined me by the way, I did a whole section at the front end of things I'm optimistic about. And reasons to be really excited headed into big 10 play. This is kind of the counter argument to that and things that worry me a little bit.
Small sample size for both were three games in. There's a lot of football left to be played. But we're also three games in. That's 20% of your season, 25% of your season. So don't ignore a three game sample size. Time of possession was constant 17th in the big 10 right now. And I'm not a slave to time of possession. Like if you score quickly, like it. I'm not going to complain if you score quickly, right? I'm not going to say, man, I would much rather have a seven minute grueling drive than a two minute lightning strike. However, I do think at times time of possession and lack thereof indicates an inability to be efficient and string things together. And that could be penalties, turnovers, negative plays, the inability to run the ball. Time of possession to me is a marker for other things that you want to do well. Excuse me. And it looks Wisconsin is just at a spot where they haven't done a great job of possessing the ball or getting opposing offenses off the field. We saw that in week two where Wisconsin just struggled a little bit to get Western Illinois off the field. So running the ball better, limiting mistakes, those are all things that are going to
help time of possession. But I don't think as a Wisconsin program, you want to be 17th in the big 10. By the way, you look at the schedule of teams Wisconsin is going to play this year. Six of them are amongst the top seven in big 10 time of possession. Right. Wisconsin has to play USC who leads the big 10 in time of possession. Minnesota, who's number two Michigan State, who's number four Penn State, who's number five UCLA, who's number six Iowa is number seven. It's an interesting contrast given where Wisconsin is. They're about to play a bunch of teams that have really dominated the ball this year. And Wisconsin has done the opposite of that. So they're going to have to turn that that around a little bit. Again, I'm not saying you need to have 34 minutes of time of possession again. I think that arrow football is kind of over. I don't think you need 36 minutes and you're on the field the entire time and you're putting together 17 play drives. I don't think those things are sustainable necessarily, but I don't think you want to be at like 26 or 27, which is where the badgers are right now. That's got to at least come up to 29, 30, 31. Because otherwise your defense will get run down a little bit.
You are going to get behind a little bit. So improving time of possession, I think, is something that I'm going to look for. And that's tied into running the ball, which was my number one concern. Okay, coming back, we got your comments and we got several here in the chat. So I definitely want to get into those. And then we are going to talk about stock up. I got several players that I'm pretty excited about. That's next on Lockdown Badgers. Let me tell you about our tremendous friends over at CalShi. And again, like college footballs here, footballs here. We have made it through the long enough season and thank goodness for that. CalShi is here for the predictions. Who makes the playoffs? Okay, let's go into I want to get a couple comments from the chat as well. So Chris says what team shows up at Penn State? Man, that's a question. And you nailed it. I don't know.
I don't know. I like to think what we saw last week is it precursor to what we're going to see going forward. But it ratchets up. Penn State's good. They got a real quarterback. They can run the ball. It's a good team and it's a team with a lot of veterans that came over from Iowa state. And it's a tough environment. I've been to a game and happy valley. It's it's going to be a test. I do think some of what we saw last week is is travels. Like I think the defense travels. I think special teams travels. We got to see Colne Joseph continue doing what he did last week. But if he's efficient and he avoids some mistakes, I think Wisconsin's going to be right there. Luke says even after the first two games, I never stop believing in Joseph. Joseph is almost on pace right now to have the most passing yards in a season by a badger. That's a good point, Luke. He was great last week for the most part. Now, there's a couple of yolo balls he throws every game. And I just I just hope that those kind of start to just be throwing out of bounds. Right. If it's not there, just throw it out of bounds, live to play another day. You can tell you can tell he's got that moxie about him where every every snap he's going to try
to make something happen. Like he really wants to be that playmaker for the scene. This team needs it. There's just a couple throws a game where just throw those away. And man, we it's like the 9010, right? 90% of what you're doing. We absolutely love that 10% if you could you're not going to be perfect because he's not painting manning. But if you could take that 10% of throws were like, and trim that down to 5% 4% right? Limit some of those really risky decisions. And I think he's going to be really good this year. David just says beat Penn State. Let's go. I love it. I love it. Zach Bart says they scored a rushing deep passing in defensive and special teams touched on Saturday. The whole gambit just well rounded in all three phases and the team and fan base needed it. It did the podcasters needed it for gosh sake dog on it. No, but like everybody needed it. I think everybody just needed. Okay, this looks this looks like good football. One thing I've said a lot is we all know a good football looks like. Like we're not coaches for the most part. I know some people that listen to this channel are and know X is knows better than I do.
But we've all watched a ton of football. We know what good football looks like. A point I made the other day to my buddy and we were talking about the western Illinois game. And it was like listen, I'm not an architect, but if I go to a big city, I can look at a building and say that building looks great or that building looks like a piece of a crap, right? We know a good football looks like and this last week it looked like good football. And that matters. And the fan base, a lot of people reach out to me and be like, ah, that was great. It was fun to be a badger fan that day. And I really agree. Let's keep going here. Yeah, listen, Dan says ask me if I'm optimistic after Penn State. I hear that. James says Penn State will cover. We'll see. Mike says 27, 24 badgers. Let's go. Alarm kick support in nine yard at the buzzer to win it. That would be phenomenal. I would absolutely love that. I would absolutely love that. I'm just seeing if there's any other questions in here that I didn't fully get. The couple of people in your pet people, a few, uh, Rahul both high on Chris Palmer, our Nate Palmer.
I like Nate Palmer a lot. That that's a guy that I think is pretty decisive and explosive. Uh, we've seen him on the on return teams. Especially if a guy like Abu Sama is dinged up. If you remember, go back to Nate Palmer in his recruitment. That was a very highly recruited kid. He's still pretty young. I like the explosiveness. He gets north south quick. He gets the ball really well. I like the future there for Nate Palmer. That's a player I really, really like. Mike wit Jacob Harris better get more snaps. Kid is a monster. Well, let's get into stock up because that is a great segue into one of my stock up guys. Jacob Harris. That guy is massive. He's got good hands. He's productive. Lester, they got to find ways to get him the ball more. And I think we talked so much about Emmett Bork and the upside and what the coaches think of him. And what he could potentially be. Like Jacob Harris is really good. Incredible hands that one handed catch in the rain on the sideline. First of all, great throw by Colton Joseph. But that's a tremendous catch. And then on the right side line, you see him kind of rumbling,
bumbling, stumbling down the sideline. Like he's pretty mobile. He's big. He's good hands. Definitely a guy I want to see get more involved. And definitely a guy that I think is stock up. Tyro Henry stock up. Obviously, incredible. Here's a couple of stats with Tyro Henry. 14 catches on 17 targets. That's an 82% reception rate. That's incredibly efficient. And he had one drop. But if you target somebody 17 times and you come out of it with 14 catches and 71 yards after catch. That's that's a plus plus plus. That's number one receiver alpha type stuff. Tremendous job right there. Chris Brooks, 391, shrugged up a tackler. When throwing to Chris Brooks this last weekend, our cold Joseph had a 158 passor rating. I just love the story of Chris Brooks anyway. But that's definitely another player stock up. Emerson Mandel stock up got 26 snaps and played pretty well. Like it would be massive if you take that 26 snaps and then going into Penn State,
this becomes almost a full workload. That would be massive for this team. These these are much bigger and more physical point of attack guard. And it would really help Wisconsin gets Penn State. Bryce West stock up had five tackles, zero missed tackles. They targeted him quite a bit, but it was mostly short routes. And as soon as somebody catches the ball against Bryce West, he erases them. That dude does not miss tackles. I think at times he's maybe a tick to aggressive. I'm worried somebody's going to take advantage of that at some point with like some type of out and up or misdirection. But that dude is a really really good tackler. He's physical, he's instinctive, he's made plays in all three games. I think Bryce West has been a tremendous pick up for the Badger. Stock up Bryce West. Stock up Matt Young, right? Got that big pick, athletic pick. Also a nice tackle later in the game. He's definitely another player that you you turned the film on last week and he looked pretty good. So stock up on a lot of these guys. Yeah, Jan said feel better, but I need to see a good start. I agree.
Mike says hopefully Coleman is back this week. Agreed there too. And if you get Coleman back with what you've seen from Tyrell Henry, you start to kind of like see this receiver room come together, put Henry in the slot, Coleman on the boundary and then you have Eugene Hilton or Chris Brooks, kind of in that other spot and you start to say, okay, I kind of like this collection of receivers. I would like to see Eugene Hilton come alive a little bit. He had one catch last week. I think he was targeted three times. That's a player that I think this Badger team could use. And then because he gives you kind of the in between of Henry and Coleman. Coleman is going to give you more of that deep route, the vertical stuff. Henry can work the middle. I mean Eugene Hilton can work the middle and the sidelines. Then Henry can work out of the slot. I think that really gives you a lot of options and optionality from the receiver room. But we need Hilton to come alive for that to happen. Or maybe it's Chris Brooks. Brosteen said is Michigan State keeping it close against Notre Dame something to think about. Yeah, I was watching that game and I was texting with people.
I thought Michigan State looked pretty good. Against Notre Dame. Now Notre Dame pulled away a little bit towards the end. But Michigan State did some stuff offensively that got Notre Dame on their heels with some misdirection getting out of the pocket. They definitely played pretty well. And listen, don't I'm not sleeping on Michigan State. Like that's going to be a tough game. But first let's get through Penn State. Let's beat Penn State. Really do appreciate everybody tuning in. Mike Whit says hot take. I think our tight end room is our most complete room. I could see that. I don't think I would argue that at all to be completely honest. All right, we're in a rabbit there.
