I have a friend with the Dodgers who found out that you were going to be on the show. He said, ask Pedro how much he weighed when he first went to the Dodgers. Good to see you again. Good to see you, Maestro. When I first got to Dodgers, I was 154 pounds. Oh, and I got called up the first time. How much did you weigh when you went to Montreal? I was about 163, 164 after the entire winter and knowing that I might have a chance to be a starter.
What was your welcome to the big leagues moment? I would say probably welcome to the big leagues was probably understanding that I was going to be in the big leagues for the whole year. And coming in relief for my own brother Ramon in Atlanta. That was my moment where I really appreciated the opportunity because right away I started making history by relieving my own brother. Who threw harder? I would say Ramon. Ramon was more of a hard thrower. But I had three pitches Ramon was always able to throw a good change. And a little bit what you would call now probably a cutter. But Ramon was never able to throw a true breakable.
Where does Jacob Mizorowski's power come from? Extension, legs and flexibility. And his body is very unique. I believe Mizorowski has probably the best hips in all the baseball. That's why he's able to maximize the landing of his legs and then explode the leg and stay on the back leg glued to the rubber as long as he does. But I think growing up it was like do you have a strong arm but it's really your body that makes you have a strong arm. Yeah but everything is from the bottom up for a pitcher. And Mizorowski not only realized that he needed more weight in the lower part of his body, more work. But he's been able to stay flexible and he's released pulling only him and probably Wheeler.
And Philadelphia had that kind of breach that they have out there. Guys that are that flexible and that explosive and so far out are really really difficult to center. Plus Mizorowski really creates a lot of movement in anything he throws. Used to be getting on base, batting over 300 men something. Why doesn't like with Tony Gwynne and Wade Boggs and Rod Caru, would they be power hitters now? Well they were going to try to do that with those guys but those guys were all schooled down and you know that those guys weren't going to jeopardize what they did best to bring them to the big leagues. But nowadays with the analytics department with all these good news that supposedly know the game. I think everything has changed and because baseball is younger now and has a younger generation that rush to the big leagues a little bit quicker.
They have to still believe that whatever they tell them is what works for them. But as you know and as I'm hoping to see demi walking brewers are setting an example of how to play baseball. The Tampa Bay race are setting another example in the American league about how to play the game right, how to do the little things, how to play the fundamentals of the game. The right way and that's what I think baseball is going to have to trend from now on. I mean watching Drew Ross Moosen the other day do what he did. It's kind of an old school you know they teach him how to pitch and he's relatively young but that pitching coach that they have in Tampa and the manager that they have. I think I teach in the guys that they have playing for them. The good brand of baseball that we're used to seeing are you allowed to throw inside the way you once did.
No not anymore because I think the commissioner and the roles and everything else has changed and they're very protective of the hitters and the hitters. They want to see offense to be honest pitching back in those days was a lot of fun to have a guy go out there. You know nice shout out innings or a perfect game and no hitter. They don't want to see that they want offense and that's why strikeouts don't matter now and that's why everybody wants to swing for the fences because they want to see offense. They want to see long balls. They want to see the game that's aggressive but at the same time they want to speed up the game and I don't know it's some things I don't have to give. We're talking to Pedro Martinez Hall of Famer. You got baseball on TBS. You got game twos. They started four Eastern white socks guardians at five o'clock and then you got the Yankees and the raise at eight o'clock.
Do you have a conversation you ever had on the mound that was either with your catcher that was really bad or your manager that was really bad. I had one I remember when I first got to Boston I had just more on the side you know in the national league in the 97 thursday and I remember pitching a game. And I had a Scott Harderberg as a catcher and I that was the first time I ever had a conversation where I had to really use my knowledge and who I was to kind of you know lead lead the game and we did it right is not that Scott was doing anything wrong. He was just that the pitches were being called from the dog out and I was joking and I wasn't a big fan of it in a in a difficult situation. He keeps putting down a pitch and I I I shook it and and he put it back down and I shook it again and then at the end I stepped out and I just said hey come here.
And he goes well it's not my fault just throw the pitch because they're calling it from dog out and I said and this is my game and I'm pitching my own game. I'm responsible for it and I'm going to take over please allow me to take over and just do what I tell you. So we went on we went on to pitch a shout out I think and after the game we just had that discussion you either adjust to me because I'm a side you on a war winner. I'm a veteran you just starting your career here as a catcher and I feel like I can control my game. That was probably the longest conversation I ever have with the catcher because normally pitcher and catcher they they said everything in spring training and that's what's going to work. Did you ever consider trademarking the Yankees are my daddy? No really but I'm having a lot of fun with it I didn't know that I was going to create probably a mark with that but man have they rub it on me.
They're near your friends they rub it on me but you know what it doesn't bother me honestly because I I really embrace what what the fans love and their chance and all that and I said it honestly I should have said if it was here in the United States the Yankees are my number but that's the the way the way we say it in winner league in the Dominican when you can't get somebody out of you can't beat them. They become like someone your daddy or they own you and I said you know the Yankees are my daddy but make no mistake I will never allow that to happen if I could. Okay was there any of the words so good though was there a hitter who was your daddy a lot of them a lot of them. Yeah yeah believe it or not there were a lot of guys a hit over 300 the hit really well against me can he lost the most one of them.
Piazza got me six times. I mean took me deep. Piazza took me deep six times I don't know about his average but I do remember that he took me deep six times and he's the only one that can say that. Barry hit over almost 400 of me Tony Gwyn. He almost 400 of me never struck him out and I have three three thousand one hundred forty four. Jackie strikeouts could never strike out Tony Gwyn. You're not alone with that though Pedro. You're not alone with that trying to get Tony Gwyn to strike out because he'd strike out like 15 times a season maybe. I know it was amazing to face him. I'm glad I kept him in the yard but Barry bonds is a funny story very bonds. I got him out probably five or six times in a row and I had a few strikeouts against him but I wasn't a big name picture.
So I was a sneaking on the radar and Barry somehow figured out that I was getting him with bottles open in and I was throwing hard back in those days with Montreal and I was pitching this great game in San Francisco. I threw Barry like six changes in a row. Change ups. Change ups. When he started falling off change ups I said I'm going to sneak this possible. Open here close to the strike zone and I'm going to get him again. Boy did he turn on that fastball. Not only a miss location but he turned on the fastball. All Comisky heated off the light pole. All the fair the fair pole and the bowl bounce back. Came back and he goes I told you I was going to get you. I told you I was going to get you and I got your brother too.
So he would mine I got to for the price of one. Did you ever apologize to a hitter if you hit them. No I did not because Jacob Mizorowski said last week that he hit a Colorado Rocky in the head with a pitch and he sent him a bottle of bourbon after the game to the locker room. I do not do that but I did feel bad for some of the guys I hit and especially they got hurt. I remember hitting Bagwell wasn't on purpose even though I was a Rodic and I used to just ball their towers. Some of them you have to pitch in you have to crawl. But I hit Bagwell and I think I broke his hand one time and I felt so bad because I was a few nights when they got in a few nights before I got to meet him with Moises Aaloo they were really good friends and he was such a nice guy and I felt bad and then later on I paid the price because I got drilled by drabac.
I got drilled by drabac when I was hitting. So that was paid back for hitting Bagwell? Yeah, yeah. Bead you told them to drill me and I got drilled. Back in those days it wasn't common to hit a pitcher but I was creating a reputation. Everybody thought I was doing it on purpose and all that but I also the difference between me and Mizorowski is that I don't recall hitting someone with a fastball square in the head. I did hit people in the head but would change out breaking balls. Those breaking balls that come off your fingers and hit the player in the head but it's wearing the head with a fastball no. I was really close though. I was really close to probably hitting a few guys up in here but never did thanks to God I never did. I can understand why Mizorowski would do it. He knows how hard he throws and how dangerous he is to hit a batter in the head but he doesn't need to apologize.
He needs to continue to master what he's doing. He can never ever and this is one of the bites I can give him. He can never stop picking inside. How he does it is going to have to improve like he's improving in front of our eyes but the apology was there was no need. Nobody wants to play with anybody's head especially Mizorowski who is a good kid and a great player. How did it feel to get hit by draeback? It's stormed a little bit but not too bad. The thing is when I realized I was hit on purpose I told him also you hit me and you know you hit me with 88. Guess what I have 98 for you and I kept saying it and every in every base that I stopped I kept saying it you hit me with 88 I'm going to hit you with 98. Make sure you stay there and I just kept yapping and yapping and yapping for lipas like Pedro will stop it. You need to stop it right now Pedro.
You need to stop it and the empires are like Pedro let it go. Pedro let it go. I said no I got 98 for him and he ended up walking two more guys. The bases were loaded. I'm in third base and I'm looking straight at him and I'm like I have 98 for you and I wanted to do it for real I wanted to do it. I almost cleared the bench when he hit me because I asked him did you hit me on purpose? Did you hit me on purpose? And he said oh he said well you know how it is. So that was an indication that it was on purpose. So I kept yapping the bases got loaded and most of us took him deep with the bases loaded. They took him out of the game and then got traded to Baltimore. So I could never achieve what you know what I wanted. You still want a piece of dug gray back? I wish I could pitch for him even now in the most time of the game. I wish I could yes.
You would hit him in an old timers game? Yes I would. I'll tell you what the picture it was told to drill me by Ray Knight in Cincinnati and he did it. But later on he came over behind the scenes and he said I apologize. I know that a picture should never plunk on all the picture. Picture it did that. But help me understand this. Why do you why do you guys? Guy hits a Homer the next guy up. Why does why do you buzz the top he didn't do anything to you but that guy pays the price for the guy who homework. No no it shouldn't be that way. It shouldn't be that way. And if I was pitching and my guy hits a Homer and the next one is bust by the opposition believe me. I'll take pleasure in that one. That one was one that I was really going to enjoy because I was going to I was probably going to not not bust their tower but I was going to drop someone for sure.
And I was notorious to do that. But this competitive side I mean look you go back to the Don Zimmer moment like you it doesn't matter. It didn't matter to you. It didn't matter. It didn't matter that it was Don Zimmer. I did not want that. I did not want to charge me. I want to get my butt kicked by Posada by pen it by Roger whoever it was. Bernie any any of the players. But if Zim would know how much I respected and loved the game. He'll probably like me. But somehow if you watch the video and thanks to you guys are aware of that time probably in the SPN picked up the video of him running around everybody else and just going straight at me. I didn't know that he you know his career probably ended because of a hit by pitch in his head. But the pitch that I threw to Corrine Garcia was actually behind him.
That was a young fastball. I did not mean to throw that ball to Corrine Garcia to the head. And if you look at the situation then it's men on first and second. And this is a pulsism game. And the game I think is tired or with leaning by one. Do I want to take the ninth place here and put him on base to load the basis to then face the top of the order. That makes no sense. So Zim went out of his way to get to me and out my first intention was to hold him. But then I saw the first coming to the side and you leave me with no choice but to defend myself. And then he grabs on to my right hand. My right arm. That's a no no. So I decided just push him away. And after that you saw I didn't do anything. I just left. You know I stayed aware that someone might charge me.
So I'm just defending myself at that point. But it's so unfortunate that that happened. You know because I do have respect for all the people. And I protect kids. And I'm a different human when I'm not in uniform. But in the field. I'm not. I wasn't out there to be a friend. Thanks for sharing. Always great to catch up with you. One of my one of my favorite interviews. I always felt that. Thank you. Thank you so much. Don for having me and it's a pleasure to see you healthy. And thank you for the great lessons you gave me. Ben Affleck big time actor filmmaker screenwriter he's got awards he's got a new movie coming. All right I'm going to do my voice here Ben. All right. When their son is kidnapped LA mayoral candidate Mark Kimbell dammit 321 when their son is kidnapped LA mayoral candidate Mark Kimbell played by Ben Affleck and his wife played by Kerry Washington find themselves drawn into a web of deception as they scrambled to raise the ransom payment.
And forced to make choices and reveal secrets that could tear their world apart animals Netflix tomorrow. Wow thank you. I mean you could have had a career doing voiceovers for trailers sir. Thank you. Thank you. Who was it? Don Lafontaine wasn't he the famous guy that did was that in a world. I don't know how you come up with a line but it's such a great line for a trailer in a world. And they just stuck with it didn't matter what the movie was going to be in a world. I mean you can bet almost any story you could probably realistically imagine it does take place in a world so you know world where people are more or less like we are now. You know it didn't matter you just we tried to be in a world. How tough is it to come up with a trailer that's going to grab people I don't know the challenge of doing that because we tend to focus on everything else. It's an art form I got to tell you like you know there's a woman named Jennifer Horvath who I think is the best at this in the world and as a result we are a secretary because I think she's just a genius and it is its own its own art form and there are other directors who who you know like JJ Brums or Zach's out of people that that borrow her and that one user because she's really really great but it's it really is its own art form in fact she's so good.
She cut us sort of a campaign commercial for for my character in this movie and me and the other two editors who are quite esteemed film editors we all watch it and we're like there's our for our first 15 minutes of our movie just during the two and a half minutes she's really really gifted its own its own talent and there's a whole set of tricks and moves but it's it's just a real like communicating you know what's interesting about a story in two minutes two and a half minutes is a really good thing to do. It's amazing to watch people do well. The challenge of giving a different spin on a child kidnapped ransom movie how tough was that. You know I don't I kind of it would be tough if I felt like that was the story right my view is that you know always kind of taking this approach is that like certain genres and genre conventions are really good. Ways to kind of invite the audience into the movie there are shorthand to kind of communicate hey look here's a movie about you know people that are robbing banks or some hostages that are taken you know overseas or something and and then you know when you when you've developed that sort of plot that front brain engagement and that urgency.
You can kind of sneak in and populate the movie with the thematic stuff that I think is more interesting there's only so many sort of plots and devices and within genres you can like I genres are quite helpful they they it doesn't mean it has to be obvious but it does mean it gives the audience a sort of a context and now have conventions you can you to the conventions you can subvert the conventions but what you but it really does is engage the front brain and allow that sort of the subconscious to absorb the thematic. So really while this is a you know on the surface of movie by kidnapping you know underneath it's a movie about my opinion like this sort of advertised morality that we're asked to live with and the and sometimes the the distance between that and who we discover we really are in in very urgent situations and and as that team relates to marriage you know who are we in our marriage how honest are we how real are we how real is one expected to be. It's really about a marriage where these two people are don't really discover who the other person isn't so they're about to get a divorce and when they feel comfortable actually being themselves because they have nothing to lose any longer which I think is kind of an interesting and provocative proposition and was was the theme that I was principally interested in exploring how quickly did your ex wife turn you down for the role that carry Washington plays in the movie pretty quickly.
She's as in as is often the case she's a wiser than I am and she she I mean I didn't expect her to to want to do it once once the movie sort of went away the first time and when I was resuscitating it I said hey look I'm actually going to go ahead and make this movie I've got a kind of a different idea about what I want to do it about and she said well sounds great but you're going to find someone else play your wife and I said yeah I thought you'd probably feel that way. But one day I do look I think she's right you know you can't ask the audience if you're going to have baggage with your performers it needs to work in favor of the story you don't want it to run counter to it you don't want the audience to come with a bunch of assumptions and then be distracted by what those assumptions are but nonetheless I would love to work with her as she's an extraordinary actress and you know it's the reason I want to work with Matt as well when you beside him being so gifted it's that like when you know something. But he really well you kind of feel like you know aspects of them that they haven't yet mind or or or explored or shown to the world and I thought you know selfishly as a director I could bring those out but next time.
The movie animals comes to Netflix tomorrow October 9th speaking of Matt Damon but with between you two who was the better athlete growing up. Well I'm sure Matt would say it was him but he'd have to confront the fact that when you're bigger and stronger I mean let's face it you know it's not like you get a shot off against me that's the kind of guy would just always call the foul you know what I'm like now I was clean block sir I don't. But that was a good you remember Matt's two years older than I am so we're kids two years of big difference you know what I mean like in little league and then he so it took a while for me to to catch up to him in terms of like. Physicality but I'd be I'd be longing by said Matt wasn't a pretty good athlete because because he is tougher to sneak into Fenway or old Boston Garden. Well I think it's probably what is tougher to sneak into to the old garden just because it's a little bit less.
I'm although the old garden you know they weren't quite so rigorous for like checking your tickets and your seats I mean and by the way when I was a kid you know this was the 80s right I mean he was next to impossible you get a I get a $3 bleach receipt at Fenway any day any day of the week. It's tickets at Fenway were available red socks you know we had Dennis accuracy as a starter you know losing games we had you know we had a decent team we had Jim might as you Fred Lynn we had we had Roger Clemens we got the World Series in 1986 but that was kind of it and for the in the early 80s they were just the perennial you know third fourth place team whereas the Celtics obviously you know we're you know we got Larry bird and Kevin McCale not Paris does Johnson in 1981 obviously you know one and then again in 84 and 86. So getting tickets the Southridge and that's the impossible I had a friend who had one quarter of season tickets obstructed you and in the old garden there were a lot of those seats which just meant you were literally staring at a pole but I went nonetheless and it was like I remember they were so high up that you would pass the organist on your way to the
destructive view seats but nonetheless it was like I mean the biggest thrill in the world I can't overstayed how you know Larry bird and that team was you know was Boston in those days and in fact so much so that when we graduate from high school Matt and and I and another friend of ours drove to French lick Indiana to try to meet Larry bird and we like I don't encourage this behavior by the way don't drive to famous people's homes don't ring their bells we did do this and we got there and they they were like Larry's in Portland fraction with the dream team and so we probably we could have easily found out but we drove all the way there to to be told that Larry was an in French lick I took a girlfriend to French lick I grew up in Ohio and I convinced her that we were going to go to a famous hotel with the the spas that they have in French lick Indiana and I only went there to see if Larry bird was there really yeah yeah I went to the gym I shot some hoops there went over to his house got out of the car there's no net on the on the rim yeah and she goes what are we doing I said I just have to do this it's it's you know she goes is this why we came to French lick and I said yes
wow yeah you are really I've never met another person who made the actual building I remember well we put in by the way we went to a bar in downtown French lick and said where does Larry bird live and they were like oh just right up the road I mean they just told us where his house was we drove the street and there of course was let there like you came Mrs. got the basketball court at front and it was like yeah this full court court with no nets in the who I figured Larry warned them off draining threes and yeah we stood there and rang the bell and then you know just took a bunch of pictures standing in front of his house like you know bowing like Wayne's were not worthy and why went to his mom's house really oh yeah oh yeah wow yeah that's you're really legit well I don't know I I've never and I remember when I when we first got successful and and and good will hunting had come out and I thought oh like you know maybe and that's birthday came along you know I had watched there's a tape narrate with VHS tape narrated by Daniel Stern and it was called Larry bird a basketball legend and we had worn this VHS tape just out listening to it and one of the in one of the lines
one of the moments in there there it's a game against Dallas and the game is tied and it's where Larry pulled up instead of you know trying to take a two point or pulled up from three and he hits the three to win and the broadcaster just as well and then he goes oh the air against the wonderful arrogance of a man who needs two to tie and says let's roll the dice and so I thought this would be a great gift I'll reach out to Larry bird and I'll get him to write you know to mat a man with the air against the wonderful arrogance who needs to tie three to win and says let's roll the dice and I got back a jersey that said Matt Larry bird and the note was quote too long all right well it was match birthday today right it is match birthday today in honor of this yeah that story in fact if Larry's out there listening not too late Larry the arrogance the wonderful arrogance it was yeah that'd be about the the only thing that I could think to get the guy what do you get the man who who has everything he's he kind of got I think the present that he really wanted with the Odyssey he's always wanted to he loves
Chris Nolan and the playing the lead man movie was I think a big deal for him and I'm not able to provide that gift for him Larry bird Jersey that quote with the only thing left. Okay I've asked Matt this maybe you can help me that the my package Fritz Peterson swapping wives the Yankees pictures he said that you guys had toyed with it where's it stand. You know it's so funny you mentioned that because it just came back up again here's the real problem with that was we developed it we want to write the story and we were working on it and working on it and then somebody finally said to us you know you guys are too old to be professional based ball pictures and we realized oh right like that's a young young man's game so we kind of let it go but just recently I got back like somebody's talking about doing it as a as a series I also heard that somebody was trying to develop a version I don't know why where they transposed it to the Red Sox and I said the Red Sox are not in that but it's swapping wives that's a sort of thing that we know that we know of Ben we know exactly that is come out big popping I'd like to I'd like to know it's a great story it's sort of like one of those you wouldn't believe it if it weren't true kind of things.
How is the role of the leading man changed over last 20 30 years. I mean listen you know we've had such I grew up admiring all these great leading men you know Dineiro and Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino and you know Denzel Washington and all these guys I think and so it seems like just a pantheon of giants and but one of the things that I think has changed just interestingly because the media landscape has changed is that it's become more difficult to be a leading man because in the old days you had three networks and a few studios and no internet and they were going to you know if you got a part in a movie a movie studio is going to advertise you know spend a lot of money advertising you and and you could sort of they could sort of make stars a little bit more and now we've got such a diffuse media landscape so that people kind of become stars and the men in these like smaller ecosystems you know where you have this world where you can have people there's millions of people who are huge fans of some show and the whole rest the world has even heard of it and so it's made it doubly difficult for for people to do that although you see you know there are certainly the great you know Tom Holland and
Tim Chalmay and young guys like that who are doing it but the bar is just raised because you know people can now we're not all subject to the sort of gatekeepers taste and we don't have people thrust upon us and they kind of select them I also think the leading man maybe well I don't know I mean I want to say we're there allowed to be a little bit more vulnerable more than a flawed but when I think back to the 70s I think maybe that's not true I mean you think about Paul Newman in the verdict this is a guy who was a drunk who was hustling clients at a funeral for somebody he didn't know I mean and that's how they started that movie it's that's a template that I really like and I believe in which is the sort of I think characters who are flawed or just more interesting you tell stories about people who are perfected to or so virtuous that you know it's kind of boring you know what the expectations are but look we've got a lot certainly a lot of terrific actors and leading leading women out there so it's still alive and well though that the business is changing sort of as we speak
this is you know often a tangent but they're my favorite scene in goodwill hunting is going to surprise you it's when you go over just get Matt and match not there your brother gets out of the back seat and gets in the front seat and Casey smile I think it's just such a sneaky brilliant little clip but it's my favorite scene in goodwill hunting which is saying a lot listen I appreciate that is just a testament to my brothers gifts I mean that wasn't something that was planned in we hadn't even thought about it when he did it just made such obvious sense like he got to move up one he got to ride shotgun you know it's like the little things that that matter so he didn't care that Matt was gone as much as he got to sit in the front seat with him he was really happy he was going to sit up front and I thought that was beautiful too and I really I appreciate your saying so my brothers he is really brilliant guys capable making really brilliant kind of brave choices like that and I agree
before I let you go there's a scene where you're in the kitchen with Carrie Washington and it gets like that's when heat gets turned up how do you how do you ramp up to get into that moment where you're going at her and she's going at you and it is back and forth you know I mean look any I think any actors got to try to like you know we've all had these experiences of various kind we make it we knew we were making a story about marriage and we knew we wanted to be unflinching and we didn't want to have a story where it was all the conflicts are you know resolved amicably and certainly this was in a really high pressure situation and I feel as an actor and kind of only as good as the people around me and so as and I really wanted to invite you to create a situation where it was like the other actor free to contribute and improvise and do what they wanted to do and so as she kept escalating the scene it just kind of kept escalating me and I thought I do remember thinking maybe this is too much because I remember getting just carried away with with anger and and and frustration and you know look that was one of those things where everything in that moment just came out as sometimes does in marriages where all your stresses and all your frustrations of many of which are going to be a lot of things
and I think we all knew that that had to be that had to send the message like hate this is not going to be this sort of normal movie we're going to really try to tell the truth about this and about marriage which is not always pretty because you're our most intense and passionate feelings like love and trust and vulnerability you know when those feel attacked or you know what I mean and I think that's also attacked or betrayed they they can kind of bring out the other side of those feelings and and I just I was lucky to have great great co stars and that scene the movie animals comes to Netflix tomorrow October 9th so Ben is in there Kerry Washington with an accent of ready shak sent in there I believe it's a terrific yes Steven young it's you know Adrien pause you know Luis Caramena's it's a great cast and it's a it was in a real honor to have them and I hope people check it out on Netflix I'm really proud of the movie

East John Smoltz holo famer he'll be on the call coming up Sunday night at eight Eastern it'll be game one Dodgers at the brewers why go head to head with Sunday night football John I think everybody always figures out that the season and the post season there should be an easy way to have those Sundays off and not go against anything else and let baseball but I think in the future that will be the case you got to almost believe that the structure of the playoffs and the way it's set up to avoid it they probably should have you know they started day early that's the next day after seasons over so one of those small problems that I'm sure they'll figure out how do the brewers beat the Dodgers the brewers beat the Dodgers if the Dodgers don't change the trend of their starting pictures walking guys because you can't get away with 19 walks against the brewers the braves had about 19 walks and did not cash in on any of them the brewers are built differently I think the brewers if they have a chance to beat the Dodgers they're left handed relievers are going to have to be as dynamic as they are.
Because you have to neutralize the left hand of power of the Dodgers they're deep they're the favorites and this is going to be an unbelievably closely contested and great series because now the brewers are lined up with the rotation that they want right if they have had to go to game five it would have been way more advantage to the Dodgers so I think it's going to be fun it's always going to have the narrative of you know David and Goliath this is not David and Goliath it might be a great deal. It might be in a payroll but this is a really really good Milwaukee Brewers team that probably likes to play the role of we have no chance all they've done is one and all they do is win and play winning baseball. Who was the Jacob Mizorowski of your day? You know Kerrywood probably Kerrywood was probably the guy that everyone went whoa you know he threw from a unique angle at strikeouts galore he was doing something that you know it was a new age kind of like phenomenon and it caught fire all over the league and everywhere he went the crowd was wanting to see it and I think that's kind of the case we have even though there are so many more Kerrywoods in our game today the longevity of it is going to be something you know
we always talk about so I hope Miz is that free and I hope he's the guy that sustains and stays away from the injuries. We talk about the evolution of sports and the modern athlete today's athlete is better than yesterday and but when it comes to pitching is today's pitching better than it was in other generations. No, no not even close but they're more talented they throw better they've got better stuff and the reason I can answer that was you know all sincerity is that they just don't last so how can you be better if you don't last now if there was a draft and you lined up the people of my generation of before we're not get picked so that's just the beauty of this sport unfortunately what they're being asked to do and how they're trying to do it. And how they're training for the reward system that is out there there's no sustainability there's no chance they could have a 20 year career and maybe that's not something that anybody wants anymore but but I would say this and I've said it a million times glad and manics myself we're not even close to some of the arms that are in the game today and some of the staffs you put the Dodger staff together and it's they're going to pick them 100% over us but there's a lot of guys in the Dodgers.
That's where the collision is but would Maddox succeed in today's baseball which I feel like he would be even better because everybody is swing nobody cares about making contact. You know they're they're they're or he would absolutely yeah right yeah he absolutely he absolutely would be better and he would survive no one likes to they all say that the obvious answer is that they're not going to be better. The obvious answers he was get he would get beat up what is he already go up yeah and he probably give up a few more home runs but he knows how to get the ball under the barrel of the bat he knows how to get it to the corner and the ABS system which everyone thinks would ding him would actually be an advantage for him because you try to guess as a hitter and when he's painting all over the place when you're going to check and make that ABS call same thing with the umpire so. That's always a tough narrative to bring generations to a new generation but I'd add this Tony Gwyn would still hit 300 he just would lead the league and walks you know everyone thinks Tony Gwyn might struggle in this kind of power age he just wouldn't swing at balls but would he be a home run hitter.
No and he would need to I think the game is going to slowly turn back to they need more contact and they need guys like a rise and and guys like the young man in my heart. Young man in Miami hitting for average what we have to we're at the lowest batting average in the history of the game and part of that of course is the power pitching and the ability to throw more power pitching but the other part of the is the swing plane and the desire to hit home runs and not actually you know control the strike zone. Would you rather face Otoni in his prime or Tony Gwyn and his prime game on the line ninth inning. I would rather face that's a great question I'd rather face Otoni only being is because it's a he's he's going to have more strikeouts is there's more. Holes in his game even though he's the greatest player of our generation then Tony Gwyn Tony Gwyn wasn't a strikeout now if you're telling me just facing them with nobody on then I'd rather face Tony Gwyn but if you're talking about a man on and the chance is a drive in the run.
Not as it's no Brenner how healthy is Otoni. He's banged up the right side of his body you know people don't understand how hard it is to hit and how hard is how hard it is to pitch when you have a lower half injury. You can't pitch you can get away with it hitting a little bit but your front side in your foundation is so important to hitting and you know I know pitchers get a lot of grief when I have a blister and like oh you can't pitch with a blister. Well the fine tools of what you need to perform what you need you got to have him and offensively he is definitely a different player. I still think when there's a click and he he shoots a ball in the gap or hits a homer it'll come back. I'd liken Yamamoto to a modern day Pedro Martinez on his similar size and just you know we I don't know if we notice him during the regular season but you can't avoid him in the push. And what what makes him so different magical.
He's unbelievable I mean that's pitchers in the game and I said it when he can broke in and you know on a staff that's full of aces he has the ability to repeat his mechanics is lower half is jaw dropping from a pitcher standpoint and he has four or five different lanes he goes to he is one of the smartest pitchers that I've seen in game adjustment. We don't see that very often because we have everything plotted any information is there for them to kind of diagram a game his ability to miss that in the post season and go deep. What I saw last year I'll never see it in my lifetime again and I'm just a huge fan and get to watch him pitch now talking to John Smoltz hold a favor he'll be on the call Sunday night Dodgers at the brewers major league baseball release this that they told the players union. We're thinking about 162 to go to 154 we're going to take away eight regular season games and then maybe we make the divisional series of best to seven why space ball releasing this information now.
Good question I think it's maybe an all of branch to see and self correct on some things that maybe again when certain markets and certain situations you feel like you need to correct I mean the race playing the Yankees right away is probably one of those instant self corrects and then the fact that you know trying to figure out how we're going to get to a season and then the post players so that's kind of the best team that's being turned up and have the best teams rewarded I think there's a value in that in the best of seven I think what's interesting though a lot of chatter and a lot of bullet bullet board in materials if you let that team pick who they want to play first which is an interesting idea I've always been an advocate of the best teams in the regular season having all home games if we were going to stay in a five game series. I think that's fine and fair but I would reward the best teams which is giving them all home games and then you don't have to give them that that day off and that time off that that is currently the case.
Are you okay with 154 games for the regular season. You know I've always been a proponent of the first half second half it looks like that's not going to happen but the reason I say that is because that's the competitive balance that would be better for a lot of teams in the smaller markets that don't seem to compete over 162. 154 would be just fine you're not going to have any arguments out of the players I think the whole idea of this off season is going to figure out they're trying to figure out how to make the competitive balance work out for baseball. I know it's not like football and football does it in different ways that use a schedule for their competitive balance and they can do that because there's not that many games meaning if you're a last place team you play a last place schedule that's how you balance that up but I think baseball with this season and this post season the way it shakes out. You're going to have some unbelievable stories of small markets that could shock everybody and win a world series which would debunk a little bit of what the narrative that's going on right now in the game that follows basically one team let's face it everybody's talking about the Dodgers and rightfully so what they did and you got to give him credit for going all in and trying to win their third championship.
Who do the raise one of face next series. Oh man I don't think it matters to them they have a special team and play a special brand of baseball I think if they were to look in the mirror they would play themselves in the Milwaukee Brewers because they play the same kind of baseball. If they go against the Dodgers if that's who it is given the fact that the guardians have come back and the White Saga or a special story and they're playing by you know the freedom that that that gives them a chance to play reckless. To me the narratives that's good that is going to be so intriguing is what style of baseball is going to win in this post season and you got two teams one in each league that play similar baseball they don't beat themselves they're not flashy they don't know about your home runs but they do a lot of things that make it tough on the other team if they play sloppy. Great to catch up with you John will talk to you again have fun on Sunday night.
