Morgan week one is finally here We finally have a game to talk about a game to preview and the Lions are gonna be kicking off things this week against the Norland Saints and there's a number of things that I think Lions fans need to know about the Saints team I think and I'm guilty of it as well the minute the schedule rolled out we saw the Saints I think a lot of people chalked that up to like an easy dub But I think there's a number of things that we can go through today to kind of get fans to maybe take this game a little bit more seriously Yeah, man, first of all, I'm happy to be here. We finally made it folks. We made it. It is September The Lions play football at Ford Field this weekend So let's just revel in that fact for a second, but Saints fans watching this I think you'll probably be pretty happy because me go and I are not of the mindset that this is a cakewalk We have been Lions fans for a long time. We understand You know, especially like early on in this iteration of the Lions like this rebuild like we a lot of teams took the Lions for granted and Late 2022 and
2023 early on and you know, they paid dearly for it So I don't see that with a Dan Campbell team which we're gonna get into But we are gonna give you guys their your flowers because this is an up-and-coming team and not someone who You know, especially Dan coming from there. There's no way on God's great earth. He's gonna take them lightly right me go Absolutely not. I think that's one of the things and we can kind of jump into just the evaluation of the Saints team I mean anytime you're going up against a young and up-and-coming team There's always had there always has to be a level of caution to some extent When it comes to a team like this, I feel like the Saints finished the season pretty strong last year Winning Ford their last five finishing the season six six out of a six and 11 Excuse me after starting the season three and ten So the fact that they were able to get to a point where they were winning more than they were losing and you start to look at Some of the talent they have and the coaches they have It's enough to see that like hey if this team can continue to Carry over that momentum that they had last year, which I know that's something that Jeremy would probably scoff at
This is a team that could still be fairly dangerous Maybe not necessarily for the Lions, but definitely for the rest of the NFC South Yeah, and it's a team that I think when it's all said and done You're going to be happy playing them earlier in the season rather than late like to me They're a little bit of like 2021 Lions vibes like the Lions as you guys have probably know if you're watching this Started the season really poorly got that win back at home against Minnesota with which was Dan Campbell's first win as a coach And then they finished kind of strong like I know that sounds crazy because they went three 13 and one But like Miko just said the Saints started three and ten Finish 6 and 11 they had one four game straight before dropping their season finale So it's a young team. They're kind of it's like a little bit of a changing of the guard right because They were so good for so long They were very much guilty of playing you know the salary cap, you know What am I trying to say Russian or a salary cap game? Yeah, yeah like they kept on kicking that can kicking that can
They took their medicine for a little bit these last couple years But now they've kind of reloaded man and you got Kellan Moore who Lions fans should be aware of if you're a little older like myself and Miko Mm-hmm, and then Their offensive coordinator is Doug Nussmeyer, and again, you got to think like it's Kellan Moore's offense right like he's It's a it's a Ben Johnson situation the offensive coordinators there to help him But it's his offense and then their defensive coordinator is Brandon Staley if you guys remember The coach that was with the chargers not too long ago He did some good things a defensive minded coach that has brought some principles that we'll get into but overall yeah Not a team I'd again would rather get them weeks one through five then weeks 13 through 18 because to me They're giving like a little bit. They might start off a little. Hey, you know like similar to the 2022 Lions But I think there'll be a tough tough out down the road. So Yeah Morgan when you look at this team what are some of the strengths that you've noticed when you look at the Saints team that the Lions are probably
You know also circling and trying to be mindful of Well, it would be Alvin Kamara. There are long-time star running back But judging from Dan Campbell's we're filming this Tuesday night the eighth Dan Campbell spoke today and he Basically said it doesn't seem like we're gonna get a K Who he's familiar with obviously from his time in New Orleans? Obviously Chris O'Lavé and wider seaver had a breakout year and 2025 over 1100 yards nine scores And then someone I really like Miss Duwan Johnson that tight and Dan mentioned him today because he was Similar to Jackson meets they drafted him as a receiver. He's a big body. We'll talk about him later But they have a couple pieces on offense and then obviously shook So I don't know like they have some pieces their skill guys especially when they're healthy could be really potent and they added Travis ETN You guys are probably familiar with so I think if they can get to because they were really bad running the ball last year Right me go so if they can even get a semblance of a running game
It's only gonna help Callan Moore implement what he wants to offensively, you know Yeah, I think that's one of the things when you talk about like okay There won't be an Alvin Kamara, but they did go out there and get Travis ETN That's the thing that like I have my attention on when it comes down to this matchup on Sunday is How are how is the lion's gonna be able to handle that type of rushing attack and will it be that much more improved because like you said That is like one of their bigger weaknesses from last season They were you know one of the bottom teams 31st first light boxes 30th first stack boxes and 31st and overall rushing efficiency Like this was a team that very much struggled to run the football and if you're the Detroit lines That's probably going to be one of the things that you're going to be testing early on this to see How much better have they gotten in that regard and having a Travis ETN is something that's going to make that a little bit more Challenging he is a younger running back. He's coming off of a really impressive season himself Over a thousand yards rushing last year 4.4.3 yards per carry had seven rushing touchdowns And he's also a threat in the passing game because he also had six receiving touchdowns. So
Even with no Alvin Kamara, they're still going to be a little bit of a test with this offense Yeah, and it's an improved offensive line I actually really like a lot of their pieces along the offensive line It got busted up at the end of last year just health related reasons Kelvin Banks If you guys remember from two drafts ago the kid out of Texas. I know me and I mean me go really liked him He he was I think the only starter that played every game for them But they had some injury problems, but they do have Caesar Ruiz If you're Michigan fan you're familiar with him and then they have Fulaga who I really liked Coming out It was Oregon State. I want to say Fulaga went to that sounds about right. Yeah But that if those two can start clicking that could be one of the better young tackle tendoms in the league for a while because I like what I see out of both of them, but if they can if they can get the ball like that's a potent offense, man We the Lions cannot let them start getting downhill. I think that's going to be it always is because Dan Campbell's that kind of coach right me go like they want to
Then their worst nightmare is like the Pittsburgh game last year where they're just getting football shoved up their noses You know over and over again. They're running duo. They're running outside zone and they're just gashing you You can't let that happen And I expect that'll be the first order of business because if you do that Then you can focus on making life tough for shock who's still Very new to the NFL right like in terms of experience And that's why like I think if we were to just boil this down like if someone were to ask you like hey what What kind of team are the Lions actually playing this week? I think that's like where I would get you like you're playing a young hungry team You're looking for it. You're looking at a team that's probably looking to put the rest of the league on notice That they're not the slow starting team that they were a season ago and that makes them dangerous in a lot of areas right already Yeah, I mean they don't have anything like no one I think this is one of the bigger spread of the week have the line the lines are at home You know most people have the lines as a as a championship contender So new Orleans if they come in here and and steal one from the Lions
Yeah, that could be a tone setter for their season and their Their development could be accelerated right like I still think they're gonna end up winning anywhere from like I don't know seven to nine six to nine games on the year Now six because they won six last year I think I'm gonna win like seven to nine you know seven ten games I think they're gonna be tough especially with the you mentioned it earlier the NFC South kind of being in in flux right now in terms of who's gonna Who's the front runner but man like yeah, I don't want especially early on I think you got to stop out any Real hope early like put a couple scores on them You know get get them into third and long and heat up shock and and don't let them because that's what Kellan more wants to do you guys know he's from Like his his upbringing in the offense like he wants to sustain drives He wants to control the clock especially if you're playing in offense like the Lions your best defense is gonna be Keeping them off the field And I like what you're saying about like the Lions can get out to a pretty quick early lead and and start to like kind of lean on the Saints a lot
It does put a lot of pressure on their quarterback Tyler Schuck to see if he can be that guy that can overcome big deficits And and I kind of want to pivot the conversation over there to Tyler Schuck a little bit because I think whenever you have like a veteran group like you do with the Lions right you have an Aiden Hutchinson You have an Ali McNeil you brought in a DJ one of like you have enough veterans on that defense where the outside perception is going to be You should be able to to kind of feast upon a second year quarterback in the league but Morgan from your vantage point what are some of the things that Tyler Schuck does well that could at least make things difficult for the Lions Yeah, I liked when I saw from Schuck I watched a little bit of his tape the last two days on the all 22 He's a tall slender built like I probably only like two 15 or two 20 but he's six five and he's got a really live arm Like making every throw and he's not afraid to to try it and he's mobile enough to hurt you So I give him credit there, you know pretty adept at not taking the big hits some of these like semi mobile quarterbacks
Like they're not the best at like just not getting blown up or like taking punishing hits And so that's something we'll have to kind of see how he manages there But I do like I mean we talked about it earlier If they can keep him like clean and they can run the ball even like halfway decent It'll make his life a little easier But I do think like being on the road It's going to be pretty pretty loud at Fordfield if I had to guess So I do think that could be a challenge for him if they are getting into some third and obvious situations because Then because we've we've heard about it all camp right me go like kelvin shepherd You know getting more creative with where the pressure is coming from even though like most of the you can't really report on it because it's You know the rules But yeah, I want to see it come both ways, you know, I mean, I want to see it come organically just where Alim McNeil whips the center. I it's Eric McCoy just Beat him quick pressure. That'd be awesome, but I also want to see it if it's third and 12 third and 13 Let's get a little nasty here, you know, I mean, let's bring Is he in off the edge and drop?
You know Derek Moore or whatever like let's get a little freaky and test this because I like we keep talking about we like Their offensive line. It's still a young offensive line right me go Yeah, young offensive line young quarterback. I think the more you can do to Make Tyler Schuck have to second guess what he's seeing The more advantageous this becomes for for this lion scene because once again He only started nine games last season And I think once again, he won more than he lost right when five and four as as a starter But I still think that there's probably a learning curve that he still has to adapt to and I think that's where you kind of have to kind of If you're the lion's try to attack that in attack and feast upon the fact that like hey Let's not just play vanilla coverages and allow him to kind of sit back there and pick apart zones or to be able to see easy man coverage Let's make it difficult for him Let's make it difficult on that young offensive line and see how good their communication and recognition is And then at that point time let the chips fall where they may in terms of allowing your players to go out there and make plays
Yeah, and this is where I love being at home as a you know, thinking on the defensive side because he's still new in the system right like it This will be you know his first full year as a starter and whereas Jared sometimes is given like multiple plays to choose from the line of scrimmage You're not really going to be able to do that against the lions this week because it's going to be loud Be like Shuck is already going to probably have a lot to deal with in terms of just you know pre-snap looks I do expect Kelden Shepherd the lion's defensive coordinator To mix things up like just give him different different looks pre-snap to keep him thinking don't allow him to get comfortable Because I think like I said I think the Saints are a tough team But I do think it could snowball a little bit if if it does go like lion's score St Saints punt lions fill goal saints punt like I think it could get That's where you don't want to be if you're New Orleans you'd rather trade punches and see where it see where things fall and in the fourth quarter like you said me go but I do think it's going to be a crush the can week To an extent not like you're playing the Marjackson or Josh Allen
But if you guys are unfamiliar with crush the can it really just means being able to slowly crush that pocket around the quarterback Not give them an easy, you know jump out of a rush lane You know we need the rush lane integrity because I don't want it to be like I hate it man The third and 12s and it's someone jumps out of a lane and it's an easy scamper and the quarterback doesn't even take a hit He slides or gets out of bounds And it's a first down those are backbreakers. So he's he's mobile enough We saw that on tape to to make that happen a handful of times a game and that's all you really need right me go In order to kind of change the momentum on a few drives Yeah, I mean you talk about the differs between first and 10 and You know first and four in the sense where he can probably pick up five to six yards on a on a given scramble just because Someone like you said got out of a rush lane and opened up a crease and now he's able to to kind of pick up some additional yards But I think even still even if you are let's say the lines are able to to employ that that you know crush the can type of mentality with their defense
When you get to those third and obvious situations That's where you really got to be locked into these skill position players right that's where you got to have DJ Rita is going to have to be locked in when he's government when he's covering crystal lava the the The matchup of juan johnson potentially against I'm assuming probably jack Campbell Maybe you'll get a little bit of broadjammer career Christian Izzy and in those situations like that's one's going to be Really impressive to watch and we already kind of talked about Travis ETN in the sense that We don't quite know how the saints are going to use him but If we were to just go base off of what he did in jackson bill He's going to be a threat on on early down situations and probably even more of a threat on third down situation Just because of what he can do as a receiver I'm I love that you brought that up because he is a dual threat in terms of both catching passes out of the backfield And totten the rock The last points on shuck Weeks 13 to 18 just to give some context to all this praise meko and I've been singing 259.2 passing yards per game. That was good enough for fourth 97.8 percent
A pass rating 13th 6.4 percent completion percentage over expectation that was four so pretty pretty impressive stuff, but yeah the skill guys Weirdly enough. I trust I'm I'm I feel okay. I crystal lobby's a fantastic player, but I feel okay about DJ and rock on the outside and then even you know I think the nickel is going to get mixed and matched if I had to guess like they're going to piecemeal it depending on the the down and distance and whatever But I think it's going to be a crucial game for the safeties and the linebackers I trust jack but both of those guys you mentioned after a lave a juan johnson and etn They're both kind of mismatches man like just the same way jameera is out of the backfield him running a texas route Against Derek Barnes probably not going to end real well for the Lions as much as I like Derek Barnes So that's something they're going to have to to think about how they want to defend him out of the backfield And then juan johnson six four two thirty man, so And I like Chuck Clark and I like avant-hamedics both of those guys are under six feet tall unfortunately
So yeah like there are going to be some you might have to bracket juan johnson if he's running up the seam Have an alignbacker carry him with the safety over the top But I don't want to give up a bunch of big plays to the like the you know juan johnson I think that's a Similar to how we talk about meeks and he's bigger than meeks is in terms of stature But yeah, it's a it's a similar situation because he can move and he's not someone that like jack could cover him Because I feel that good he like jack got so much better in space last year But beyond that I get a little nervous right me go Yeah, and it becomes even more of a issue like we're talking about those three guys This is a team that does still also have no a fan they added him this offseason and while I don't think no a fan I think we can all kind of agree no a fan hasn't quite lived up to his draft position back in that 2021 draft class But he's equally as much of a mismatch when you talk about a guy that can play in line you can play On the outside if they decide to kick him out wide that all of a sudden starts to stress your defense even more because we talk about and as lines fans
How excited we are to see you know drew petsing employees some some 12 personnel some more 13 personnel The saints could potentially be doing the same thing and if you have juan johnson and Noah fant out there now You really got to find out okay, what are the lines going to do in those match-up situations and Do they put these undersized safeties taking on some of these tight ends? Do they find you know Do they trust their linebackers more like someone feels like they're going to get the short end of the stick Do they go to the more zone like what is going to be the answer when the when the saints try to employ those types of strategies That's exactly where my brain went broke because I think about that if they go 12 personnel And if you guys are new to the channel or trying to just catch up a little more on football 12 personnel anytime you hear that from a Analyst or a broadcaster whatever it's referring to the number of running backs and tight ends all right So that first number is going to mean, you know, you're running backs. So one running back Two tight ends 12 personnel. So quick little aside there But if they do I love that point me go Noah fant and
Joanne johnson or like yeah fan hasn't quite lived up He's had some productive years in Denver. I know But they're both match-up issues for the lines current personnel like if the lines had Kirby Joseph and Brian branch back there. I'd feel a little more warm and fuzzy But yeah, just because the the size of Avanté and Chuck Clark it so it'll give me a little pause like I know Brian branch is only listed at like 510 or 511 But he plays so much bigger because he's Brian branch So before anyone in the comments comes for me, you know No, I feel you on that one So if we were to just like summarize like again trying to like boil this down for people If you're game planning for this offense if yours kelvin shepherd if you're Dan Campbelling You're trying to make sure that this defense is ready to go What would you immediately have your attention fixed on to make sure that this defense is performing at its best come Sunday Be ready for when new Orleans attempts to go heavy Right if they go if they want to go 12 personnel or you know 21 or whatever
Just like be ready to like for the lines to be in base and feel good about you know where they have people Okay, and then if even if they go like a modified like big nickel Right with like a five-man front and you know is Ian or someone along those lines at nickel I think that would be a good way to do it too just because I think the first order of business Don't let them get a running game going And I think that's going to be the biggest especially early on chess piece to fall like how are the lines gonna counter When new Orleans either tries to go heavy or say they just try to do it out of 11 personnel They try to get downhill like how are the lines gonna match up because we've heard for a little bit now. They're gonna start You know switching things up in terms of personnel in terms of how they're gonna deploy you know that the personnel that they do currently have I think that's gonna be the biggest tell like can they can they match new Orleans When new Orleans tries to play a little bully ball because I guarantee you kellenmore wants to get that going because that opens up everything
else right It does and I think the others you know also keep in mind with that in that same line of thinking like how you're talking about the lines wanting to use so many different personnel packages and want to be able to mix things up quite a bit The listen it's it's if we know these things about the lion's defense try to be trust me I'm sure kellenmore and his coaching staff knows as well So I think the lions also have to be on guard for if the Saints decide to go a little bit more up temple and try to keep the lions from getting to the packages that they want to get to and getting to the types of personnel settings that they want to have and getting if they run into situations where we talked about this with the way the rosters constructed There's not a lot of like big nose tackles of you find yourself in a situation where like Skyler Gio Howard potentially and Levi Onto Rikere you're you're guys in the middle You kind of got to be worried about if you're the lions about the saints of running a quick up temple because like hey We don't want a lean entirely getting back on the field Yeah, that's you know, and I know more is known for implementing that you know like being able to you know
Just two up clock and then wear people down like lean on you for for better like better term So yeah, I mean I we talked about it earlier more is just really good at he's talked about it like I know he is his core principles as like an offensive coach, but It's the it's what good coaches do like build a personnel like build your scheme and how you're gonna do things around your personnel Like what's at your disposal? So I do think they're gonna be aggressive though man, especially If the lions do score and kill more like I don't know how good of a shot my defense has today of Stopping them, you know three four times. So I'm gonna have to maybe turn my aggression up a bit So I don't know what that looks like is it more shots to a lave is it Testing the lions reserve safeties. I'm sure that'll come at some point But I do think the aggression will get turned up a little bit, right? No, absolutely. I think once again at the lion to your point of the lions or the ones that are being Seeing the most success offensively Kellin Kellin more is gonna have to do something to try and hold serve, right and
The first thing that typically goes when teams start to see themselves fall behind is they start to abad in the run game And in most matchups that would probably be a great thing for the lines But when you have a get to sing the praises of trapezi TN when you have a guy that's also really talented as a receiver That can all of a sudden put a lot of stress on you but With that said let's pivot over to the defense because I think that's a unit that I'll be honest before we started looking into this team I was very much like okay, who's all on this defense. That's not named Camdor Because I was I was struggling Yeah, and this gets kind of boiling back down to that transition period, right like they've they've got some stuff going Offensively like they they're cooking with some oil on the offensive side of the ball Especially when they're healthy like they've devoted a lot of resources to that offensive line And that's where I think the strength is gonna be of that team here pretty quickly on the flip side The defense like you have cam Jordan who's gonna be in a gold jacket one day But man like I like some of their pieces in the secondary like I think cool eight McKinstries
You know becoming a pretty good cover corner. They still have Just over you do remind me about cool eight. I was I was so on the cool eight right? I know I mean you both were at the time dang it out of here. Well, hindsight's always 2020 right but godly But yeah, there the strength of this team as it stands right now is certainly their offense They do run a three four still and down the stretch of 2025 Staley branding staley their defense coordinator was using more base to counter some of the heavy personnel They were encountering like when they played the panthers and A couple other those teams. I think it was the giants like these run heavy teams So I wonder like if the lions That's because that's a tough part about playing the lion's offense right me go they can Get heavy and push you around or they can put three receivers on the field James Noliams on the same brown and Tosla And run out of that and that Can be tough because especially we talked about it earlier if you're a Saints fan This is just you know how Jared Gospin in this offense for a long time
So Right now pat Singh has it built in a lot of the times he's sending off to the lion's scrimmage with three plays and depending on what he sees From a personnel and alignment standpoint. He can check into any one of those three plays so that can be Tough if your defense already isn't really matching up well enough personnel wise right me go Yeah, no absolutely I think that's the thing that's the thing to though that I'm like the most confident with the lions being able to do like Again, no slight to the Saints defense whatsoever But when you have such a multifaceted offense the ability to kind of in the same way we were talking about with the Saints The lions are going to have to be able to do that probably times to in terms of being able to mash up hunt and figure out Where can we find the most explosive opportunities Outside of just feeding it to Jameer Gibbs or outside of just throwing it to Amin Ross St. Brown But this is where like the thing that I still do worry about with and it's more
I don't know if it's more of a lion's issue or if it's more of a Saints thing, but it is just like okay You're gonna I don't know if came Jordan is supposed to play this week But you still do have chase yonk and he Kind of started to look like the chase young we remembered or at least that we kind of talked about in terms of just being a more impressive and more imposing uh, you know pass rusher But then it's like what do you do about the fact that they went out there and they got I just blanked at his name it was the pass rusher from Texas tech they used to play for the Raiders They have diary Wilson Colby wouldn't No, he was like a really high pick for the Raiders and like I just blanked out his name But they've they've gone out there and added some talent to that defensive line They still have Carl Carl Anderson. I believe as well. I'm along the defensive line So like you have some veterans there It's gonna be interesting to see like do the Saints get more aggressive with their pass rush to kind of try to make things a little bit more And difficult for Jericho often that in that regard
Yeah, and I wonder so they like his mentor right so If the stalee comes from the fangio tree and if you guys are wondering what the vick fangio tree is He is a long time defensive coordinator. He's with the eagle still with the eagles, I think but yeah They rely on a ton of too high shells So you're basically taking two safeties or not always two safeties, but you have two defenders deep splitting the field into half So really that came into prominence during 2020 Because just you know, it was fangio's way of fighting some of these high-powered Downfield passing attacks that were just chewing up the league you think like the prime chiefs with Tyree kill on them So fangio like you know or stalee like fangio Gonna rely a lot of that two high shells. They played a ton of quarters last year, right? So taking the field and dividing it into fourths. So it's really football is complicated, but it's also not if you guys are ever like what are these terms? So I wonder that'll be the telling part right there because
If you can't if the lions do get rolling running the football And you have to bring extra bodies towards the lion's scrimmage to the party from New Orleans Then that opens you up to problems if you're the saints because That's what Jared and and pet sing and jameer and jameo that's what they want because that's gonna give them a shot to go over the top And regardless of what people say jergoth is a good deep ball thrower man, especially Now that he's gotten on the same page with jameason over like the last year and a half He's pretty it's pretty good. I was gonna say and you talk about being at home indoors like You like you said you don't want those types of situations to start to kind of you know pop their head up Looking at this defense you kind of talked about some of the guys that are like worth kind of keeping an eye on Chase young is probably going to be the best pass rush for the saints, you know come come Sunday um Justin Reed is another guy though in the secondary along with crew layman chemistry where Those are two guys that you definitely kind of got to keep an eye on anyone else though that you're just like
That's that's another guy to kind of keep an eye on keep a name At the top of lion's fans heads I like caden elis's game did we you just mentioned adjustment reading chase young right Yep, yep. Okay, just me. Yeah, so caden elis man just because I was catching up on those notes, but he was really productive in Atlanta Over a hundred tackles and at least three and a half sacks and the last over the last three seasons and each of the seasons So pretty impressive there and he's gonna be somebody who Has to come to play because they're gonna run that three four right and you're gonna ask that You're gonna ask davan God's child. I'm probably saying that wrong. I know it's caden. So sorry saints fans Louisiana and But they're gonna ask him to to to gap right and if he And again, that's tough because we'll see who's playing left guard I know meko made a video earlier today about you know dan kind of alluding to it's not out of the question that it could be a little bit of a rotation at left guard between Christian Mahogany and Ben Barch
But you have juice drugs at center. Take Rallagia right guard But you're gonna ask a god's child to Two gap you want to keep the linebackers free But again if the lines are able to reset that line of scrimmaging and get downhill get back to some of those core principles that they Were really beat teams to death with and 24 and 23 that could that could open up some problems because That like kind of takes away like okay Chase Young had a really productive year rushing the pastor last year But if they're getting Beat off the line of scrimmage over and over again running the football that kind of takes the teeth out of a pass rush You know meko Absolutely, and I think while I the linebacking core is probably another key part of the saints defense that I think in years past you would have been much more concerned about not saying that these like caden Ellis like you were saying has been really productive in Atlanta the last couple of years I believe they still have Pete Werder who they drafted in the second round back in 2022 I believe it was so like they they have pieces at the linebacker level, but
It's one of those things where like I remember them having tomorrow Davis and that being the dude that was just like Anchoring everything in the middle Obviously, we remember when the saints had john at the Vilma all the way all those years ago This isn't the same defense of this isn't the same linebacking core for the saints in that regard and so Unfortunately for the saints fans like I look at this is like somewhere where the lines Sec or the lions tightens and running backs should be able to get a leg up on that level the defense just because I don't like looking at some of these pf f craze and again pf isn't the end all be all But there's not many guys on in their linebacking core that like we're scoring or grading really well in coverage And I think if you're drew petsing you you you test that you stress that as much as you possibly can Yeah, I'm working some Spoiler alert. That's one of our matchups to watch later in the towards the end of the podcast But yeah, if you can get jameer Gibbs matched up against some of these linebackers in space I think that's going to be some pretty good money for the lions
But yeah, that they have a couple other like I really like Jonas Sanker. So he played at safety Most his rookie year earned himself all rookie honors Is moving down to the nickel like slash star position in staleys defense So think about that safety that third safety that's basically a nickel, but he's moving around They can you know a little bit more like flexibility in terms of like how they deploy him good around the line of scrimmage But can pet can sanker guard Amin Ra because That's how you're gonna be you know like he looked when I was watching their film and like he looks good in coverage He's strong. He's looked like he's someone I read from one of the saints writers. He's gained a little bit of weight So I think he's playing around like 210, but can you guard 14 in space, you know like I I liked what you were doing a safety But that's going to be a lot different than being matched up with a perennial all pro most of the game, you know No, absolutely, and I think that's something once again that if you're drew petting you got to you got a test that you got to stress stress
That matchup in addition to samlaport if you can get that as a match up and see like okay great Throw throw some 14 at him throw some 87 Maybe a little bit of 18 every once in a while. It's just to see if like hey We're gonna throw another big body receiver at you. That's got a ridiculous catch radius And just see if you can put a little bit of stress on the middle of that defense because that combined with shaky linebacking coverage that might be enough for the lions to be able to kind of get a leg up on this defense and Once again, it's it's not so much that like I'm not worried about this defense because I think the lions have enough things going on with their offensive line And the first time of us seeing drew pettings offense with the starters There's going to be a lot that they're gonna have to figure out, but Morgan There's not a lot about this saint's defense that I I'm drastically worried about in week one No, yeah, the the biggest thing is just gonna be like chase young and on obvious passing downs against like the like a Blake Miller I think they'll probably keep you on the way from pene but I don't know put him over there if you guys want that's fine by me. I'd put some I'm more jam on the slot to man
Just because with his speed he's so difficult to cover like if he can release either side like that's so scary for a defender Like you know such just I want to see more of that too Just that's what I want to see from petting early on like manufacture some favorable situations for This you know war chest of weapons that the lions have I mean that's going to be the key to this offense being successful is him being able to leverage those assets and being able to get the most Out of like a really talented lineup And it's the type of lineup that I kind of think of whenever I go to righteous fell and crap jerky because it's just stacked in so many different areas Whether you're talking about meat sticks whether you're talking about jerky whether you're talking about some of the way that you can bundle They're jerky righteous fell and is a go-to staple for me when it comes down to a high quality protein snack and The before the word is brought to you by righteous fell and crap jerky. And welcome back to before the roar your preview podcasts over here at pridodytroid.com where we are taking a look at the lines for st Matchups Saints matchup In the first segment we talked a lot about what to focus on when it comes down to the saints offense as well as their defense And what are the things that the lines have to be looking on on the lookout for Morgan we're doing something brand new to the pot with the podcast this year where we're going to be incorporating a little bit of film right now We have a clip cute up here for the people where we are going to kind of Illustrate one of the things that we're talking about in terms of the things that the lines you to be on the lookout for and this week's clip is going to feature chase young because I think some people kind of feel like chase young is never quite lived up to the hype But he's still a dangerous pass rusher in my mind Maybe he's not one of those perennial pass rusher, but he's one of those guys that if you are lazy in your technique or if you're just Not having good communication along your offensive line. He can make you pay and he can make you pay quickly Yeah, it's a reason he was one of the like what he goes second overall that year
So I'm yeah like he had all the tools come out of Ohio State You know, there's been some hiccups, but last year was kind of a career revival man I mean it 10 sacks 11 TFLs was just highly highly productive and I yeah, that's someone that they're probably gonna While they don't have anyone that really, you know, they don't have like a Miles Garrett or you know Parsons level of rusher like I think chase young's gonna be really good Couldn't end up having like a jadevi and clowny type of career Although he's not the run defender that clowny is, but that could improve You know if he can Realizes that that can also get you paid over the course of a very long time. So But yeah chase young is someone and I want to see again Where are they gonna line him up? Are they gonna keep him over and just try their luck with Blake Miller? That's probably what I would do But by all means if you want to move him around and put him over with school It's cool to so but yeah, this is a disappearing act. I would absolutely recommend if you want to see Yeah, it'll just be a little delete button
But on this clip we have young lined up really wide and he's just gonna be just really good burst off the ball right me go Like he just good burst good bend and this is something That you know if you're in an obvious passing down Blake Miller's gonna have to be ready for like that speed rush where he just tries to Get outside and get under you right All right So let's take a look at this play here and just bring it down to the people what exactly is happening and in How chase young finds a way to win in this situation Yeah, and I'm you've been talking about pretty snap communication. I think that's huge especially you'll see on this play So initially Young is lined out like lined up super wide like even wider than a wide nine because he's outside of 89 But then he takes a few steps down towards the center and at the time like I don't even think the left tackle 74 He sees him But then the defensive back also rushes And I think there's just a moment of like a has a moment of indecision for 74 and young is able to just kind of go
Strashing right like he doesn't even he shows his hands like barely, but it's mostly just like a shoulder dip and rip and he's under 74 in an instant And they were lucky that wasn't a strip sack. So that's something that they'll have to be ready for because I don't want That's that's kind of a cheap sack right me go like I know they all count the same, but That's a that's a nice that's almost like a give me a give me for for a player like chase young who's that athletic and that explosive off the edge And like you said that's where Communication come becomes very key and obviously this is happening against the left tackle I wouldn't expect Penaisel to get caught off guard like this because I expect him to be one of the main communicators along this offensive line But that's those are types of communications that you should be having with the rest of your offensive line of like hey Like I got a guy out here and it's it the Opportunity for chase young to line up that far out wide is very advantageous He has a much easier time he has a he could take a much better angle
And it puts a lot of stress on the tackle to be able to get out in space that way and you it can put you in a lose-lose situation Right, I guess if you're not up to that level of of talent because if he over commits to the outside Well now chase young potentially dip inside and if you If you're slow to the outside like he wasn't this clip Well, you see what happens in that situation and so whether it's Penaisel or Blake Miller like You have to be cognizant of these types of formations if the if the saints are going to be putting their pass rushers further out wide of like Okay, I have to get to my spot even quicker I have to get hands on my defender even quicker and I need to communicate to the offensive line and possibly the Jared to let them know to let them know like Hey, we got we got action out here This might have to be this pass might have to be hot Yeah, and this is exactly like This is where I trust Jared more to because New Orleans is messing around a little bit here if you like if you guys Look at it. They have five defenders along the line of scrimmage and 21 for New Orleans looks like he's gonna line up in the slot with 89
But then as soon as the ball snapped him and chase young now we're going off the edge and 20 who was lined up Basically head up with the left tackle in a two-point stance ends up dropping to a little like hook zone In the middle of the field so that can mess with things because it's you have a pre-snap picture as a quarterback And then that's obviously a drastically different post-snap picture And that's something I wonder if they'll try to because Jared's been playing like what is his his 10th year He you can't really give him he still gets fooled because no one's perfect But it's tougher to fool a guy like Jared Goff who has seen it all at this point So I do wonder if they if they do mess around like that if because it's playing a little rush and roulette because if it doesn't get home That's where the lions are trying to you know really trying to make you pay right? Yeah, and I think that's where like you said it may not be something that they necessarily try to in terms of trying to confuse Jared But maybe it's something that they try to get like Miller overthinking or over committing and being a little anxious because like oh snap
He's he's further out. I need to really over commit to get to the ticket to my landmark And potentially opening yourself up for things that you probably didn't have to where you could just easily communicate And and still be able to cover all your bases But I expect you passing to to have that kind of scout it and and half his offensive line along with Hank Fairly having this offensive line prepared for that I expect this to be something that Jared has the top of mind and is also preparing this offense for in certain situations Because like I said earlier you you may be able to adjust your protection to a comfort that But sometimes you're just gonna have to look at that and be like hey, I think this is what's gonna happen Hey, we're gonna have to check into a hot read And and this ball's coming out quickly to whoever's in the slot or whatever the case may be Yeah, and on that rep the running back actually did a pretty good job of stepping up and getting 21 From him blitzing from the slot, but 74 like you said was just Kind of slow out of his stance slow to recognize what was coming off the edge and you know the footwork It's ugly and that's something you don't want because this is that could have been a strip sack to be honest because he was on who's that Brady cook
For He was on cookin a I don't know a hiccup so good on him for not having the ball loose But I think that's something that we got to watch too like is New Orleans gonna Try to because I mean that's a that's a principle of the fangio schemes to right like a lot of pre-snap disguising We're trying to we're trying to make you think it's cover two, but it's actually quarters and we're trying to make you think It's it's man and we're gonna drop into a you know Cover three shell and like keep things in front of us So it really I want to see how much you know that goes of that goes on because that's where I think Jared's really good Because he's been doing it for so long he's seen everything and he's so in command of this offense like Again going to the blindness Girmage with two or three plays. It's it's tougher to fool him I'm not saying it doesn't happen because it happens to every quarterback But a 10-year vet who is cerebral is goffes. It's a that's a that's a tough tough ask Absolutely Let's take a pivot over to some of the matchups that we're watching in this week's game There's a number of matches that we could choose from but let's just talk about maybe our top three
Uh, who do you got as like your number one matchup that you that you have eyes on this week? Spoiler alert, but it's uh, Blake Miller against chase young if that's the if that's the matchup we get a lot because you know We just went over it. Are they gonna try to manufacture one on ones with chase young like have them line up out wide Stack that line stack that side of the line to where you know, you have an isolation against him and and he has no help But I think that's my biggest one because that would be Quick way for them to be able to affect the lines passing game as if chase young is getting consistent pressure off the edge And they're having to either devote a tight end to helping him out or running back like you're having to mirror stay in because That's taking a receiving option off the board obviously right you guys are probably like duh, but it sounds It's it's more simple It's it's complicated, but it is that simple if you guys remember the Vikings game when they just kept spamming That a gamblets a cat blitz like we know how good jameer Gibbs is catching the ball
We're not gonna worry about it though. We're gonna make him block every play So I think if you uh if chase young can get going that would be a little bit of a wrench thrown into the lines Overall offensive plans, but who's your matchup your next one I'm gonna go obviously the the lines like key receiving group. So you have st brown Jamie's the Williams and in sam liporta up against the likes of of sanker McKinstree and and and Riley if the lions can get the better of that matchup I think the the santa gonna be in for a long day and obviously I'm gonna rise already a tough cover like game in game out type of situation He's a guy that could absolutely command a lot of targets But jameos grown so much in these last few years and so I I wouldn't just if I'm the saints I'm not just gonna sleep on the fact of like oh he could be this deep like no He can also beat you on some of these slant routes some of these drag routes some of these comeback routes like he was killing people on comeback routes last year
He's going to put a lot of pressure on that secondary And if they are putting a lot of pressure on on the outside We talked about this earlier when we were talking about the defense I think sam liporta has a really good opportunity to feast on the middle in some of these linebacker matchups If you want to put one of the safeties I mean again just to read would probably have a better matchup against sam liporta But if you start allowing some of these linebackers To go toe to toe with sam They're gonna be in for a really long day Yeah, and it's tough to match up with the lion's skill players in general man And I think that's really that the key because if New Orleans can't generate consistent pressure on golf It's gonna be tough for their defensive personnel to to keep the lion's offensive personnel under wraps because you just touched on it Like that's a three-headed monster there and we have any in touched on jameer who's either the best or the second best running back in full Paul depending on who you ask Yeah, and I love that you gave jameason his his flowers man saints fans I know he came in the league is kind of a like more limited receiver
That was just predicated off a speed coming out of Alabama, but he's really he's putting it together man like making tough Contested catches his round trees improved like I don't know if you guys thought already but Jared's interview with I think he was I think it was brag alley. Yeah brag alley where he was like Just the development of jameason has been so much fun to watch Because that's someone he catches a drag and he's making NFL players look slow just deleting angles It doesn't matter. It's doing the same stuff. He did at Alabama But I do think if they can't If they can't generate pressure and they they might have to manufacture it depending on how it goes That can get dicey for New Orleans on the defensive side of the ball And then that kind of pivots into our last matchup too, which we alluded to earlier, but Jamir boy, it's a and we've heard about it We haven't seen it because it's the first real but if they're moving if they're moving Jamir around man
He that's a tough like because that's how you can manufacture really bad matchups against the defense if you have 11 personnel and it's Sam Laporta tied in to slas saint and jamo and then you motion Jamir out and you're an empty But now Jamir is against you know matched up with a a linebacker who has no business being with him in space That's what I want to see from petzing right that gets me It's it's a lot of that right and once again not saying that three four defenses can't be good against the run But I think it tends to in a lot of cases lend itself to the offensive line where it's like hey you only have this mini big body Guys up front if you can start to get guys to the second level And and this is where like we haven't talked about him much But like this is where tight brawl it should be like a really big x factor for this lines offensive line Of like if you can start to get taped to the second level getting him on some of these linebackers That's when jock and really start to feast because we've seen what he can do with a little bit of space And how he quickly eats that up and it's next thing you know it's 20 30 yards downfield
Yeah, man. Yeah, that would be a tough draw for New Orleans So you know, I think Brandon Staley is a great really good offensive mind So I expect him to have some answers because he's like he's staring this dragon in the face too You know what I mean? So how will the lines counter that will they go like we alluded to earlier? Well, they go a little lighter and try to lean on them out of 11 personnel and keep a lot of receivers on the field Just so New Orleans can't get into that That three four that base look that they were having success in last year at the end of 2025 Or will they fight fire with fire and get Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright and Conklin in there and start Beat and people up So that's kind of how I look at it, but I'm excited man I hate that it's only Tuesday night from ready to go I'm right there with you and I think like listen We've talked about a lot of things when it comes to this game There's a lot more than we probably could talk about because I think there's just there's so many layers to a football game And I think that's one of the reasons that I hope this podcast is really helpful to you guys is like
It may seem like we covered a lap But like that's how in depth things start to get when you're talking about like okay What do you have to do to prepare for for an opponent? And it would be really easy Morgan for us to come on here and just brag about how great the lines look But it's also week one we don't even know how great the lions are gonna look You know once kickoff starts to happen. We're optimistic But I I think something like this is is hope I'm hopeful that something like this is beneficial to the fans Yeah, I think it's a quick little obviously we'll have more stuff to chew on next week when we see like we get a full game of the lions And a full game of buffalo and the you know for next week But right now it's it you know everyone in the NFL tell you it's a it's a new year It's a new team like yeah the lines core is Relatively the same, but it's a new team every year So I do think I we're gonna pivot into predictions now Yeah, let's go ahead and just jump to predictions. I like it. I'm gonna go obviously. I'm gonna go lion still But I do think it's like I think they'll cover. I think it'll be 2720 I don't know like maybe the lions get up and then
Shock and they have they get a couple scores because I do like I like their offense especially If you guys are watching us saints fans I'm a big offensive line and defensive line guy and your offensive line has the makings of some pretty potent stuff You know especially if like I really like we talked about it for a guy banks Ruiz I think that can do some things But it's still early in the year So I do expect the lions to kind of control this one not like in a blowout manner I don't think just because the first first few weeks of football are always so weird like if you hear Dan Campbell talk He'll say We really don't know what you are like by week five you might have a pretty good idea I'm like that's a whole month of football. So but yeah 2720 where you at? I'm gonna go a little bit more in favor of the lines in the sense that I got a 2816 Very much like you I think the saints have the ability to make this a very interesting game for much of the game Right up until maybe like the third fourth quarter where the lines might start to pull away a little bit here
But when you have guys like Chris Alabe when you got you have guys like Travis ETN and Johan Johnson Those are the types of impact players that can like really get your your offense sparked and and get them going Fairly quickly and it may not take a lot You know Chris Alabe obviously has also we didn't talk about this much But he has dealt with a good amount of injuries But when he's healthy he's still very dynamic and this is where Again as a lions fan We still have to see what the secondary is going to look like up against That talent of a receiver a guy that just got paid a guy that's seen as a really productive Uh a wide receiver who can easily flip the field for you and someone like Travis ETN. Well I'm very confident in Ryan and I talked about this yesterday on the POD cast I think the lines are going to be really good against the run You still got to go out there and prove it though. This is where we're all expecting a different scheme What does that look like when you don't have as many big bodies on the field maybe at one given time? Are they able to hold up against the run?
That well and also was the saint running attack last year Porous because they didn't have like a full season of Alvin Camara or even the fact that they had an aging Alvin Camara And now you're getting someone younger in Travis ETN like does the rushing attack just look different because the talent is different I think they'll be able to run it. I think the lions might have to make a change in the middle of the like I don't know why I just kind of expect New Orleans to have a little bit of success running the ball Even though I do think the lions Run defense for the years going to be really good because just the way their personnel is shaped and the way the lions kind of View defense, but I agree with you do I think ETN's productive And I think it last year it was a bit of Camara and then just a bit of their offensive line kind of being in flux The whole year besides some Kelvin Banks the left tackle. So yeah similar situation to the lions In terms of just if they can be healthy I think they can gel and then start to again. I'm happy Said at the beginning happy to be playing them week one and not later in the season I'd like to get them right now before they this young group starts to
Put some stuff together Absolutely. Well before we get out of here. Let's end it with one final thing. What is one thing that you're watching for in this game? I want to see how our offensive line the lions offensive line looks once like we you know Get out of the first 15 right? So if you're one or at the first 15 hour a lot of the times Coordinators will have the their first dozen to 15 plays kind of scripted and I want to see what it looks like when they're just in The regular flow of the game are they able to run duo like you talked about me co are they able to get Ratledge and Mahogany or bar to whoever it is to the second level I want to see how The interior operates on passing downs like can they be clear and concise in their communication And then I want to see this is just a personal thing let let's get freaky with pene again like 23 and 24 over on the left side Yeah, like let's get him out in the space. Let's have some screens designed where He's the blocker of like he's getting out there for a JMO on like a smoke like a little quick little bubble screen
So I want to see petting tap into this wealth of talent and But first like the biggest thing is I want to see how the especially the interior offensive line functions once we're out of the first 15 So what about you? What are you gonna be watching? Yeah outside of the offensive line because that is going to be something that I have my eyes on It's actually the defensive line or the defense as a whole And specifically are they able to get to the quarterback that was probably the number one thing that so many fans were yelling about and Rightfully so in terms of like hey, this defense has to get better at getting to the quarterback quickly Not just getting there but getting there quickly to disrupt Not even always getting a sec right Morgan like just sometimes just disrupting play flow So it doesn't feel like a quarterback has all day to kind of survey the field and you talked about how mobile Tyler Shuck is Really getting there as quickly as you possibly can under control so that he's not just all of a sudden if you can't find anything down field It feels like he could just break containment and pick up five six yards here or there. So I feel like we got to see a little bit of the creativity in
Both training camp as well as in the preseason We saw this defense look way more aggressive I want to see that translate to the regular season right I don't want that to just be a sample size or just some stuff that they were trying in the preseason No, let's see that same level of aggression from Kelvin Shepherd in the regular season with his top tier talent Like that's the other thing that's like crazy to me We were seeing guys like Eric O'Neill I'm Ed Hossanean TJ Wanum was out there and Derek Moore was out there but like I want to see this with Aiden Hutchinson I want to see this with a lame. I want to see this with Ty League What does it look like when you have your best defensive lineman out there when Jack is out the Wendarek barges out there Let's let's see this defense attack in those situations Yeah, man heat him up. I'm right there with you man defensively That's certainly what I'll be watching on on third and obvious once you've earned the right to rush the passer Get get a little aggressive man like let's I love when I blitz Jack Campbell because god almighty he blitzes It's it's crazy Because like I'm right there with you. I want to see them blitz Jack Campbell
I'm just as excited though to see Devin white blitz because that is like that's must see TV Every time I saw Devin white blitz during the preseason it was like oh he is trying to he's trying to wreck shop Every time him and him and Jack in the a gap Shucks gonna be like what are we doing here? I'm gonna get rid of this thing so Yeah Yeah, so yeah No, that's that's pretty much going to do for this podcast guys We really hope you enjoyed it if you are looking for any more additional lions news or coverage You can always do that over at Prited Detroit calm or like we've been saying lately check out the SB nation app You can go over there Sign up or once you download you can sign up and you can actually follow Prited Detroit on that app So it's almost like having your very own Prited Detroit app because it's going to give you all the articles when they're uploaded And you can engage with our feed which is an amazing way for you to engage with other lions fans On your mobile device and be able to just like again Theory craft give some of your own opinions and once the games kick off
