This is, we love offensive lineman on this show. Olin Krutz, the former Bears Center, is a frequent guest on this show. And we look forward to learning from you about offensive lineplay in the NFL and what it's like to be in the huddle with the Bears. How much joy and pride do you have today? Because Jonah, the Bears fans that we've talked to are experiencing some joy and pride today, my friend. Definitely. Yeah. Yesterday was exciting, man. You know, 59 points is the most I've ever scored in an NFL game and to be able to do that in the season opener. It's crazy to see what we're able to build off with just one game. And it's very exciting. When it comes to scoring points, you guys are going to be happy pretty much no matter how you do it.

5:07But considering what you guys have been able to do over the last year in a game with the run game, what is that like for the guys up front? And when you guys know that whether it's zone blocking or ISO stuff, like gap scheme stuff, you guys have been successful either way. Yeah, definitely. You know, when we're able to get the ground game going, especially for an offensive lineman, it's our dream. You know, we don't want these D-Lyman who are, you know, so called more athletic than us to just like their chops and get wide stances and, you know, rush the quarterback the whole game. So once we can get the ground game going, it opens everything up. I laughed yesterday because inside of our show group chat, I texted everyone. On one of the runs, it was like, Jonah was five yards in the in zone. Like before the play was over. And I'm like, that's when you're really getting after it. So knowing that the percentage, right? Like that's right.

6:08You guys get to celebrate with your running back or your quarter back, depending on who's running the rock. And seeing that you guys last year, they ran almost 70% of the time to your side. Being able to really impose will on the more athletic defensive lineman has got to be a treat. Definitely. And, you know, the cool thing about it is they know where the run's going too. So we're definitely able to bring our hard hat in and lean on us on the right side. Yeah, you know, Jonah, it's, it feels really nice to have it as an identity. Like everybody knows you guys are going to run it. And you're going to run it on your side. And to still be able to do it, can you look back a little bit and tell us what it was like? I guess it was what after week four last year, week five last year when you guys really kind of seem to read jigger and decide to lean on that. Do you remember those conversations or remember that pivot from Ben?

7:11Yeah, I mean, it was, it was all new scheme on new new team to align. So, you know, it takes time for things to gel, but I think it might have been, I forget which one was first since an adi or New Orleans. We were, we were rolling and from there, it just, it went crazy. Yeah, it clearly did. And now like even when people know that's what you're going to do, it's still, it still happens. I want to go back to the defensive lineman here. Are they more athletic? Are any of them more athletic than you? You know, they, they say they are, you know, on paper, they, they might be, you know, their combine numbers might look a little better than mine. But, you know, you know, play strength and play speeds a lot different than in pajamas and run it between cones. Oh, let's go. So, if you had to line up with Bobby Brown, the third or Derek Brown, like, they, they might do a broad jump further than you in pajamas, but you beat them up on the field. Yes, you did, didn't you? Yeah, they, you know, they definitely get theirs, you know, they, they get paid the big bucks to do

8:11their job too. So, um, it's, it's definitely a great battle. I always love to go into like the etymology of a, of a player and be like, how did they get to where it is they are? And especially when it comes to offensive lineman. So, Jonah, was there ever a point where you weren't an offensive lineman and did you ever dream, like, you know what, nah, I, I'm going to be a, a two guard in the NBA or I'm going to be a, a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball or, or did you show up to freshman B team? And they were like, hey, Jonah, you're going to be playing this, get ready for a 70 number for the rest of your life. Yeah. Uh, I would say it started flag football. My hand went right in the dirt. Um, I was center for, for majority of my years. I actually got a little fullback linebacker, but um, that then lasts too long. And, you know, the hand went back in the dirt. And, you know, it's, it's worked out pretty well from there. Were, were you big? Is that why were you thicker than

9:13others? Yeah, I was always a big kid. You know, I could, I was, I was finishing my sibling serving the food so we can get up from the dinner table. So, you know, I was always one of the bigger ones. How many siblings? I'm one of five. Where are you? You youngest middle? I'm second youngest. Second youngest. Oh, yeah, they laid on me to, to finish the food. You know, oh, man, I know that. I feel that. Can you tell people just how important flag football was to your, uh, to your development as, uh, as, as a center? As it was important, wasn't it? Yeah, yeah, definitely. You know, it might have been 24 years ago now, but I'd say it was, it was crucial. You know, it was my first, my first look in the football. Um, obviously it's completely different from tackle, but, you know, it, it, it, it was the, the start of something special. Yeah, Jonah, we're laughing here because my partner, right. Right. But I'm talking to Jonah. Okay. My partner, um, when it comes to his football bonafides,

10:14they come specifically from flag football and he loves it. He, he, he, is he still playing? No, I'm not. He hasn't played 30 years. It's been a while. It's been a while. He, he did this last year. Right. We had all recruits in our studio. Like one of the best centers that's ever played the game and speaks, dropped down in a stance. It wasn't pretty, Jonah. Oh, it was a whole thing. So that's why he's trying to co-opt you into saying that because you played flag football, the he now has a window into how you think. My, he might, he got a little something. I bet you might have a little something. My guy, Jonah, I'm going to send you this video after the second. So you can see it myself. You know, I'll go find the, I'll go find the college video. Jonah, I was, I was, I was the center. I'm not going to see it. I'm going to max. I was the center and the nose tackle. My college flag football team. So I feel like I can think like a center,

11:17just a little bit like, but you, you obviously were a center for a long time. And thinking about the whole offensive line as a center, does that make you better as a guard? Um, I'd say, I'd say it definitely helps, you know, with communication and things, um, being able to identify fronts and, you know, pressures and things like that. But, um, center at this level, it's a, it's a different, it's a different beast, especially in this offense, you know, I'm glad I'm at guard now. Well, considering what happened last year where you guys had Drew Dolman and he was great for you guys last year. And you make the move and, and he retires and Garrett Bradbury comes in. What's it been like communicating with Garrett and with Caleb now that you have another center in there that that's helping out? Yeah. I mean, Garrett Garrett's been in the game for eight years now. So he's got some skin in it. And, um, you know, he's a very bright guy. He's, he's seen everything, you know, most, most, most offenses are very similar. And, you know, we all run wide zone, duo, gap scheme, things like that. But, you know, he's, he's jailed right away. He's, um, he's a veteran

12:21guy. He's a very, um, easygoing dude. So we, we jailed right away. And for Caleb, you know, the continuity of year two in this offense. I mean, you seen it, you seen it yesterday. He's, he's, he's flying around. Yeah. Let's talk about that. Jonah Jackson, the Bears, right guard is with us here on the score on the speaklin' home show. We're gonna do this every Monday and we're super excited about it. The way that Ben talked about it, um, after the game, he said that on Saturday night, he had his last little quarterback talk through with Caleb. And Caleb was on top of it, like all of the details and every little thing. And Ben actually said, Jonah, that he slept well on Saturday night. I doubt that. But yeah, I doubt it too. I don't know if he slept. I'm saying, see, but just like the confidence. And then what we saw yesterday, I mean, tell us what, what it felt like to have Caleb in charge. It seemed like he was on top of everything yesterday from the snap. I mean, it was, it was special. Um, you know, from him using his legs,

13:25you know, he, he bailes us out of a lot of situations, makes us look good. Um, they got to respect the guy like that in the pocket. And then, you know, the, the throws he was able to make. The one Nicole was, I mean, ridiculous. The one that, the, the, the one on one 50 50 ball to roam. Just just out of this world throws that are happening in week one and it's just things he can continue to build upon. He scrambled left on a third and 11 and did like the jump man throw to Khalif. That's not what I forgot that one. Yeah. That's outrageous. How about the hot read or tell us and how that, how does that play out? Was it a hot read? Did he, did he change the play at the line of the scrimmage? Just changed the, to Cole was on a big third down and short late in the game. And then he threw it a call. You remember the one I'm talking about? There was, there was, there's a lot to remember. Yeah. I got you know, for big guys up front, um, for text is mainly what we pay attention to. I don't know all the, yeah. The route changes and things like that. But I, I bet he puts something together on the fly. Maybe and made it happen. How, how often does he change

14:28things that affect you at the line of scrimmage? Fairly often, you know, say, say, say there's a look that we have to change a play to make a kill call. Um, or, you know, audible at the other way. You know, it, it happens, it happens very frequently. And, and his voice is loud enough. He's a tharitative enough now. Is it more so than last year? Yeah. I mean, he was doing it last year. But yeah, he's even more comfortable with it now. And you know, we, we can hear him even through the, the words of the Bank of America Stadium. Bears guard Jonah Jackson, Jonah is here on the Spiegel and home show. I, I am amazed at the, the success that you guys have had overall. But I love for DeAndre Swift. And you guys are running inside zone and seeing him pick, make the right decisions. And in some times, some cases make it the right decision by the decision that he, he ends up making. I, I'd love to know what that is like when you guys know that you're moving. And he has the type of success like we, we gave him the window and he took advantage of the window that

15:30we gave him. Yeah, I mean, I've, I've been with DeAndre for since our rookie year. We got drafted to the truth together. So I knew his, his capabilities, his ability to be special when, when the balls in his hands and, you know, like, like I said, with Caleb, he makes us look good. DeAndre makes us look good. You know, we just got to make sure we cover guys up up front and he'll make the little guys on the back end mess. So we're paid for it. When, when you guys see the, he gets new paper, gets 25 million guaranteed. I imagine there will be some sort of gift that will come your way from DeAndre on that. But, but how happy are you guys for him that at this point, usually this is when people start asking questions about the age of a running back, but to see him get rewarded for his hard work and you guys' hard work in tandem is got to be incredibly satisfying. Oh, it's, it's awesome to see one of your, one of your good, good brothers get, um, get paid, you know, and I mean, he is in year seven, but he's only, I think he's only 26, 27. So, you know,

16:31he's still in his prime years at that position. And I did tell him when he signed, I do like watch this. So I'll let you know if anything comes up. So 1200 yards, like 1300 yards, how does it work? If he, if he get us to get him a certain amount of, I don't, I don't know. I don't know. He, a new contract should be enough, but we'll see. You know, we're shooting for the stars here, man. What's your favorite watch that you have? Um, that I own. Yeah. Um, I got a, I got a Rolex very, very nice watch, but, um, you know, I told him, I like, I like some other stuff too. We'll, we'll see. It did, I feel like something changed with him here before last year. And maybe it's you, maybe it's your presence or maybe you're part of it. Like it was kind of a bumpy season the year before. And then last year with Biannemy, with Eric Biannemy here. And, and, and with Ben, like, Deandre runs so much more, I don't know, forceful or he's like, he goes into the middle with so much more authority. I, it's got to be hard to, to be a running back and make that choice again and

17:36again and again. It's dangerous. You put yourself in harm's way every time. But, that's definitely right. And like, I can, I can empathize with it. Do you know, did anything change with him or, um, I mean, I, I didn't watch too much of the, I think it was 24 tape. Yeah. He was his first year with the Bears, but, you know, last year I had a front row seat of it. And he, he looked like the guy seen get drafted in 2020, even better. Um, you know, he's, he's able to go side to side and he can, he can go downhill and, and, and thump you too. So, Jonah, we know that you guys are doing your best to not necessarily hear what's happening on the outside. And we know that that's a part of being a professional athlete. But I'm curious because this city, like the energy of it when the Bears win is completely different. And you can feel it when you're just walking around the city. Does the level of excitement that has grown over the, let's call it the last eight months, the level of excitement over the last eight months. Are you guys cognizant of it? Definitely. You know, there's, I, I used to be able to walk in grocery

18:40stores normally without being recognized. And now, now people know who I am. But, um, you know, we, we, we hold a level of accountability to ourselves, the team and into the city. You know, we, we want to make you guys proud, make ourselves proud and, um, you know, take this thing to the top. That's really cool because nothing unites this city like a good Bears team. Nothing. Nothing. Football is king, man. Yeah. So that's really cool that you feel it. Hey, what was your favorite play as an offensive lineman from, from yesterday's game? I'd probably say that 61 yarder from, um, from Kyle. That was, that was beautiful. I think we had just gotten the ball back. It was the first play of the drive. You know, there's nothing like scoring on the first play of the drive, especially in some heat like that. But, um, to see him take it 61 and to see not only the guys up front tight ends, but the little guys on the outside Khalif, uh, Luther, Jadae making home run hitting blocks. It was, it was special. Yeah. I mean,

19:43that, that's a great answer, man. And watching that play, I mean, you, you, you said it right there, but that, it looks like a whole team buying in when you see everybody getting a block on that thing for your short, for the case of illus to make something like that happen and the village showed up. So look, we're, we're happy that you're here on, on our show. And it's kind of rare for a, a, a active offensive lineman to have like a radio show. And it's great. Yeah. This is your show, man. Would you, if the offensive line room was like, Jonah, can we come over and have dinner? Would you be able to do that? Or are you like, you know what, guys, I got a credit card. We can just head out. Yeah, for sure. Definitely would be able to do that. But, you know, the credit card swiped and it going out somewhere definitely is easier. But if the boys wanted to, mean, to throw down, I do, I actually cooked one time I had, uh, my rookie year, uh, I told the, uh, Deandre Swift and another team, I didn't mind another cook and they didn't believe me. And I shafted up.

Um, I'd say, I'd say probably, probably one of the older guys, you know, uh, me, Joe, Garrett, Darnell, whoever we, we can go wherever it's not really, uh, um, a certain person that would do it more than the other. I also thought just, I thought Drew's reason was really good in the broadcast. It was bumpy for him at NBC. It was much better. He has been because they got together mid-season last year. You can tell that their chemistry is grown and Adam was joking about how there were two Hall of Famers at the game with Drew being there for the national broadcast on Fox and then loop Kekely doing local. It's just crazy to see those two guys there after they competed against each other for forever. Yeah, I thought Drew was really comfortable and that came through. There was just a lot of, it felt like just good football conversation, quarterback conversation, offensive coordinator conversation coming out of Drew Brees.

30:09And that became a topic of discussion for Ben Johnson today. In talking about where did no block, no rock come from, he also brings up that conversation between Drew Brees and Kele Williams. Yeah, no, I had heard that one a while ago back when I was in Miami. So I'm glad you brought that up. That certainly showed up on the tape. We had a lot of our little guys going down and making big plays for us on the running game that ended up being some big runs for us. Ben, was there ever any question in your mind that you would bring back good, better best for this season? It seemed like in the video you showed that you were, that you had let us at least left a dramatic pause while the players were waiting for it. I mean, it was kind of the vision when I took it over a year and a half ago. I kind of had that in mind that being kind of our thing. And so, nothing really discouraged me away from doing that. I think it's great message. I think it's a good rallying cry for us. And I think the guys enjoy it.

31:09Hey, Ben, first one for you. There was a check down to Kyle right before Cole's touched down, went for 19 yards. I was curious, kind of using that play as an example, what you thought overall of your production, both from Caleb and your backs and receivers on those check down plays. Yeah, I mean, it's, it goes back, Caleb and I were talking about it the night before the game, just his conversation with Drew Breeze, who ended up calling our game, just the difference between 60% and 70%. And he said the difference is three completions of game. And you turn on our tape, and it's kind of like that that might have stuck with our guy a little bit, which was, which was cool to see. Couple of check downs to the backs were good plays for us. There's a couple of times where the primary is not there. And you can see him reset to the middle of the field where number two was and he ended up dotting that for five yard gains a couple times. I thought he had some really nice throwaways when the plays weren't there was smart with the football. And then I think we would also showed up was just on the scramble, the scramble in general. We had a lot more production

32:14than maybe we would have had in the past. And so that was encouraging to see as well. That's really good stuff there. First of all, the dissection of the willingness through the check downs, some really smart throwaways and several times a scramble instead of like trying to take a shot down field, go ahead and get those four yards, those five yards. Sometimes the first down sometimes is not, but also bringing up Drew breeze. Those are real conversations with real people. Not just like a media thing that I have to do with true freaking breeze and and Caleb recognizing that and being like, here's a free window into the most accurate quarterback of all time. Like the most efficient quarterback that's ever played the game. I've got a free window into it. How does he think? What does he think about all of this? Does this stuff matter? And you find a way to make it matter like being having the opportunity to be in a room with someone like that. That's willing that because you know, there are some superstars who aren't that don't want to they want

33:16to gatekeep a little bit. But I found that a lot of these quarterbacks are like, Hey man, here's a little thing that I can tell you that's going to make you better and they like it. Like Steve Young is like that. Sure, but Caleb's open to it. You know, and he's had some experience with Brady doing that too. With Brady doing that. But just like the guys that he loves, he's sought out Rogers. He's sought out Stafford. And why not? And why not? So that's one of the ways you can get by the way of this morning. I was watching Channel nine and they played because if you guys didn't see it for for those of you who are listening to the show, you just jumped in about the good, better, best. The players kind of had to coax Ben to do good, better, best. And so they were joking this morning on Channel nine about it. And I didn't know this, but at some point we need to get Tom Osulo on the show because he the nugget that he dropped was that his wrestling coach used to say that all the time. And that for him, it's triggering because of like how hard he was pushed

34:24and Pat won a state championship as a wrestler. But he says that every time he plays it on Channel nine, he's like, because of what his life was like as a New Jersey wrestler back in the day. And Billy Williams and Ben Johnson. I know, right? Here's a little more Ben from today. This is fresh Ben Johnson tape from today and zoom with the media on the performance of the secondary. And whether he spoke to Jalen Johnson and Tyreeks Stevenson. Yeah, well, I have not talked and I have not spoke individually with Jalen or Tyreeks. I addressed the team earlier today and then they ended up breaking and going with their respective coaches. I'll circle back with them on Wednesday when we get back together. But you know, both of them I talked to them after the game, the locker room, they were excited that the team won the game. But I think both of them felt like that they could play better than they did. And the tape appeared that way to me. I thought they both had strong training camps. And so really want to hit the ground running. And I don't think we did

35:31in terms of what we were expecting in that game. So good news is this. We got a chance next week to come back and start all over again. We've had some instances in the past where we don't play as well as we want to one week and we'll come back the next week and play a whole lot better. And I expect that out of them. They're pros. They know what it looks like. And I know they're also really resilient individuals as well. They know they're talented and this team needs them. So they'll bounce back. No problem. Dylan had a great start to his career. I thought he was all over the field. He's one of those guys throughout camp that he would make mistakes, but rarely makes the same mistake twice. I think he's done a great job in the open field, making sure he's getting tackles ended up being our leading tackler yesterday. I thought he had that four-spumble. It turned out. It was Jaylen who came in with the top-down punch out there. And so point in case though, he was all over the place. The great job stopped in the football when he had an opportunity to do so.

36:35Kudos to Cam Lewis really next to him as well because he went into the day not even knowing he was going to start for us at safety. We worked out Xavier Woods that morning and when we decided to make him inactive, Cam became our starter at safety and played really, really well. So we just want to throw him a shout out. And then I think you brought up Malik Muhammad. He played really good football first first day as well. So sticky and coverage, competed his tail off, fearless, was really proud of what he put on tape. Man Benz locked in on the defensive side as you want a head coach to be. Jaylen got beat several times. Yeah, to rough day yesterday. Whether it was Teteroma, Mila and a couple times, one of them where the four-spumble would come in, whether it cocker beat Tyreek as well. They felt for a couple of double moves. Yeah. It felt like there was a little cheating going on. It felt like he and Tyreek were kind of

37:39peaking. And we've seen Tyreek do this. The Patriots last year took advantage of the fact that the Tyreek likes the cheat. Like I'll peek inside and see what's going on. And sometimes that means a guy's going to give behind you. And there were some of that that was going on yesterday. It's a hard position. It's a very, very hard position. But, you know, the standards got to be hired and that. We'll talk about this. Some of this with Matt Bowen tomorrow on the show as well. Get very specific about the secondary and what Dennis Allen may or may not do as he tries to shift things around coach him up. One more thing, our buddy Jason Leisure wanted to get more details about DeAndre Swift. He just signed a big contract and had a huge day and go back into the relationship between DeAndre and Ben. DeAndre Swift, can you give some insight into the journey that you and he have had from your on staff in Detroit and they're trading him away to now he has become indispensable for you and you're enthusiastically signing him to a contract extension.

38:43Yeah, well, I was there in Detroit when he was drafted. I know there was, I might have been the COVID year. I can't even remember. I remember how excited we were to get him on board and then, you know, we had a we had a coaching staff change shortly thereafter and coach Campbell and the rest of the that new staff came in. And so I was able to be with him for a while. He's always been his super explosive athlete, you know, I think what's happened over the course of his career is just this understanding of what's going on in the running game where he needs to hit it. People, I think sometimes put him in a box is more of a scat back type, but he's really an all purpose back as far as I'm concerned. He's a lot stronger than what people think. He's willing to go for those hard yards and run in between the tackles. He can put his shoulder down, drive the pile. And yet he still has the speed to where he can be an explosive play on the perimeter as well.

39:46So I've always seen him as is more of an all purpose back than then putting them in a certain type of label on them. I'm just really proud of how he's grown to become at this point. He's earned that contract. He wants to he wants to be here the way he works and he goes about his business is exactly what we want to be about his teammates respect them and he's a huge part of what we do here on offense. I was so excited when the Bears got him from Philly because I had watched a couple of Eagles games where I saw him being that bell cow, being that guy willing to go between the tackles and be that all purpose back, not just a scat. And then in his first year here, he was really frustrating, you know, bouncing everything outside. And it's got on some level, it's got to be about willingness to actually put yourself into that that that harms way and maybe belief in the offensive line, belief in the system can play into it as well. So it's it's encouraging to see what he's done and hear the way that Ben talks about him and sees what what what what what he can be.

40:51And now we're seeing it. I'm happy that that he's doing well in the way that their opportunities for him, like you look at some of the, the cutback lanes that are available for him in zone runs. And you go, oh my god, like the the synchronicity of the Bears offensive line in their zone run game, even with two new components to what they had. Well, I guess not new at Braxton, but, but the fact that he wasn't the guy and they did, I guess you want to go with new because Theo Bennett, it was out there a little bit yesterday. Yeah, I should ask Jonah about that. Love their conversation with Jonah Jackson, but yeah, feel Bennett out there like, hey, here you go. Here's a left tackle for a little while. Yep.
