About this episode

“Since 1952 Interstate Batteries has been evoking compassion and a trustworthy spirit into the surrounding communities. Interstate Batteries is a mission driven company fueled by purpose and guided by their values.”From the transcript

In this episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch sits down with returning guest Jason Miller of JMiller Custom Calls to kick off another New Jersey black bear season. The conversation starts beneath the mount of Jason’s biggest bear yet—a massive bruin estimated around 600 pounds live weight and now in the Boone and Crockett record book. Jason tells the full story of a hunt he almost didn’t go on, from reluctantly climbing into a stand late in an extended season to watching the bear work toward him, the shots that followed, and finally walking up on an animal far larger than he realized. It’s one of those hunting stories where seemingly everything had to line up just right, and it leads to a simple reminder: sometimes the biggest moments happen when you quit worrying about the outcome and just go hunting.

From there, Mitch and Jason look ahead to another bear season and dig into the experiences that have shaped the way they hunt. They compare Jason’s commitment to proven locations with Mitch’s tendency to stay mobile, discuss scouting with a purpose, using bait and cameras for inventory, trusting fresh sign, and knowing when to stick it out rather than chase the next spot. Jason also adds a new challenge this fall by trading his compound for a recurve and setting his stand specifically for a close-range opportunity. More than anything, this is a preseason BS session about black bears, lessons learned through years of scouting and hunting, the camaraderie of bear camp, and why the work and people involved have become every bit as important as punching a tag.

Flowing ad bunched on metrics that look great, till the CFO sees them, that's bullspin'd. And marketers are calling it out in dashboard confessions. I remember telling my boss, it'll be good for the brand when leads were slow. Yeah, it wasn't. From unforgiving terrain and limited time, on the heartwood bridges of the northeast,

real woodsmen are made. This is the Pennsylvania woodsman. From a state where deer camp still matters, traditions run deep, and success comes from persistence, no shortcuts. Built for hunters balancing work, family, and the pull of the woods. When the hunt is over, what matters most? Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman podcast. As always, I'm glad that you're here joining us on this week's episode. A fun one at that. An episode recapping some stories and some experiences and preparation going into hunting season with a good friend of mine. I spent the weekend finishing up some house projects and got to do a little bit of hunting. I had my first sit of the year. I went down to New Jersey and got to climb in a tree, which after a doe, trying to fill that doe tag in the early deer season before you can use your fallbow buck tag and went into a spot that I'd found some sign the week before. It went about the way I expected to. It was kind of a debacle.

My equipment was not properly set up. My efficiency of getting in and out, and specifically using my tree stand equipment was less than desirable. I got eaten alive by mosquitoes. I saw some deer just at a distance in their shot opportunities, but it went about the way I would expect the first sit to go. There's a lot of fine tuning in kinks to work out, as I'm quite a bit rusty, but that's all right. I still had a good time and planned to go back again here in the upcoming week. I also had another sit thrown out there for ag tag hunting. Kind of a unique opportunity to be hunting deer with a center fire rifle in August and September. I was able to go out for the second time. I saw a bunch of deer every single time they were on the wrong property, just off of the property line, literally within two leaps of the wrong property. I came right at the end, equiting time with a big large doe that was a mere 15 yards from me, maybe less just on

the other side of the fence line. There was two problems. Number one, she was on the wrong side of the property, but number two, she was sky-lined and there was no way I could fire center fire rifle with safe safely in that situation. But I'm on deer, I'm getting better, and I'm looking forward to more and more hunting opportunities. I'm especially looking forward to this hunting opportunity that we're going to be talking about in this week's episode. That is another bear season. This is the, I believe the fourth year that I'm going down in October to New Jersey to have a bear camp with my buddies. Now you've heard him on the show before many times, but we're always talking turkey, Jason Miller, Jay Miller, custom calls. We all know he's a bird and he loves to talk about his birds that he chases in the spring. But a close second for him is this bear hunt that we do. And this is the first time we got to have a bear hunting conversation and it's all around BS session preseason. We start off, we were discussing and recapping the story of the giant bear that he killed during segment B season last year. Jason killed a 600 pound bear estimated live weight.

Absolute brewing, funny story behind it. And that leads us into the next part. And that's discussing what we've done over the years, experiences, the scouting, the tried and true stuff, the exploratory things, the camp camaraderie and much, much more all around the New Jersey bear hunting. And we don't claim to be any experts by any means of this New Jersey bear hunt, but we sure do have a lot of fun and we do have some success. And I hope you guys enjoyed this episode and you find something useful that either it's entertaining or you can use it in the woods for yourself this coming season. And then we did that one right away because you can see the insulation behind that wood up there by the window. That's why we built it front. And I had built that wall right away for storage back there. But I wanted a game room. Didn't expect to have this sitting in here, but you know, I was thinking of I showed my wife the picture of that thing. Like mounted or the mounted picture. Yeah. The picture you standing here and just trying to

show her comparison and stuff. And she's like, that is ridiculous. And she's like, I don't like that half-life size though. I think it would look better with a full-life size. I said, I'll remember that. I said, if I ever shoot one that big, well, you know, of course, look at I'm happy with it. But I'm thinking, man, that would look good the whole thing. But I'm also taking that with a lot of money. Yeah, I'm sure it is. I mean, texted army ain't cheap, especially good text. Did I send you a picture of when I held that next to that? It was a show. It looked tiny. Yeah. I don't think I have that picture. I just showed the one you standing there. But I remember you showing me the picture of your bit. That was what 150 dressed. Yeah. So that shows you like what it was next to that. Like that whole thing that you see the shoulder mount is his neck and head. So the one on the right is the first one you shot down there with me that year with the muzzle. No, that was this one. Oh, that's the last shot. That's the first one you shot over there in the gap. Yeah. And then you're, did you do anything with the one you shot last year with the bow? That Andy has in the freezer. Andy has. Because he wants a rug. But now he's going to wait that

there getting into it. He doesn't want to like do mine if they get one. Which I understand. And then now I also have one that yeah, you have one that flicker is going to mount for himself. Oh, he's still didn't mount that one. He didn't. I knew you said he was going to mount one for himself. Yeah. So I have no, I think it looks better. I think you should maybe you should get a half life size of that one right next to it. Well, I mean, maybe I'll just get another one, but not that big. I mean, I'm happy with it. And like I said, like if you look at a bear, obviously, you know, but the ass ends the biggest end. Like probably half his weight isn't even on that thing. Like compared to how fat his ass was. Probably not. I mean, it's shoulder huge. It's neck looks freakishly long because of the way the leg is positioned back like this. But I mean, I have but that's how that's how he looked. I believe when he stepped out, I saw the face come out and I went to this side. And I like I told my when I told my brother, my oldest brother, I shot in a neck. He goes, you never take neck shots. I see his neck looked like a deer's body. And my brother

goes really I was like, I'm telling you I said, what my crosshair draw is like, why not? Yeah. Well, I was thinking at some point we'd tell that story and we might as well go and start it off that way. But any other time I have you on the podcast, we're talking about them, feathery loud birds that you're obsessed with. And I think your obsession with bear isn't far behind. It's getting there. I mean, I know you look forward to turkey season every year. I look forward to turkey season two. But I this this bear hunt for me. Man, that's that's getting towards the top for me. I enjoy when we go down and do this hunt in New Jersey. I enjoy hunt them in Pennsylvania. And it's been fun for us to go down and and do this. And I just figured it be fun to have a BS conversation about it. But you did have one heck of so like we're sitting here in Jason's basement. And you got the two on the wall. We kind of went through you get the two rugs on the wall. Your first one you shot making drives. The other one is the first one you shot the year we went down 23. That was a fun episode. You shot another one that you just said that the

taxidermis that was the same year you shot the that was the same year you shot them one with the muzzle loaded with me on the left. The next year you shot that one with the bow. That was my first bow. That was your first bow bear. Last year you shot one with the bow and in the segment A and in this freaking beast of a bear. Which what was the final weight there? So he was dressed out at 524.5. So they figured right around 600 live weight. Well, that would make sense to me. So we've been planning we've been doing the segment A the October hunt in New Jersey now. This is the fourth year. So 22 is when you 22 was when we went in the December hunt segment B they opened it. But you and Lusher went to a different spot and we went at different times. And then 23 was the first year we went together I think. So 23 24 25. This is the fourth year we're doing segment A down there I think. Yeah, because this I shot five in those three years. Yeah,

that one year I didn't get my segment B one. Right. Well, and did you I guess you did hunt four them all three years. Yeah, but that the one year we just didn't like none of us really went over there for that segment B. Maybe that one oh it rained. Remember we went down toward where I shot this one I think you were with your buddy. And then it was so foggy down there that marks that let's go north and we went up 20 minutes it's not foggy and then we were like we should have been up here. And well, that's the year when you I think went to the mound. I think Mark and I went to the mound. Remember me and Scott went over and I seen that one that was yeah, that's right. Up in the field and then they drove a corn. Yeah, and then here comes this little one in the guys like we got him. I was like no you didn't because there's no way that was the one I saw go in the corn at 300 yards. But yeah, so that and then if you remember like I could see it in the corn but I knew the guy was coming so I couldn't shoot but he had already then had it hit which I didn't

know at the time but then he ended up getting it but yeah, so in all reality you've had baron counters and put bear down of six bear hunting seasons in New Jersey two years. Eggman S Eggman B you've gone five for six and you had opportunities or encounters with bear the sixth season you just didn't shoot one which is just mind-boggling when you think about bear hunting. Yeah, now mind you for anyone listening I'm not holding out for 600 pounders. True. You know what I mean? So that our group could have had a lot more bear you know if if like you shot that one right around 100 with the bow I shot that one last year was 108 or something but like that to think like even now this year you see my weapon of choice I'm practicing with this recurve so my thing though is if it's a legal bear I'm gonna go over 100 I want shoot one that's I'm guessing 75 but if I see 100

pounder and I have that I'm gonna do it yeah just because of the bow I have that would be really good. Yeah I start shooting broadheads on that by the way. Not yet but let me tell you last night was the best not ever shot like you need to get brought. Yeah so I want to do that but I figured I'd shoot another week or two yet. Yeah so you hinted at this one I think you need to talk about this one so you right here you got a 600 pound estimated live weight bear that you shot in the second season last year which actually the extended season if you remember yeah it was right it was the last 15 minutes of that extended season when I got them. Yeah so we've put an emphasis in segment A in October haven't put as much emphasis into segment B but you were kind of changing now a little because you were going over with with Mike and some of those guys to talk a little bit about this thing. So the lesser twins and I went over for the first day of segment B it was so cold it was nine degrees but because I had shot that one in archery my mission was to I wanted to get a buck over in

Jersey because then I figured I'd go in the spring and go for my triple crown you know. That's right because usually you think the bear is the hardest part of that. So I went to a spot where Andy had his camera see a lot of buck and I actually seen a nice buck but there was another guy out in a stand and the deer turned towards him and not me and I thought I'm not taking a cheesy shot if it comes to me I'll take it if not let it go to him and then a guy shot it but Mark and Mike went up to where we usually hunt and one of the family members that we see up there every year he said hey where's your buddy he was we walked back to his ridge tracked one right past my tree stand and I'm like of course and then we well I remember going back to the Airbnb and I said to Mike and Mark like first of all was cold as hell it was crazy crazy cold as cold that week and then yeah and I said to him we're just kind of pissing in the wind sitting somewhere we're not driving we don't have a big group but we didn't scout like what's fresh what's

new we didn't bait we didn't do anything so I remember I was sitting in there the second day and I said to them I only go shotgun again because if you remember Dietrich had shot and big Rick shot oh that's right now I did not know that so like the first day yeah the first day of the second day they were over there setting their stuff up had their bait going you know what I mean like they had it they had it set up which proves that if you put your time in you have good results it certainly does yeah so I remember telling Mike and Mark look our our tree season I love it that's segment A getting together with you guys I mean like you say about turkey on I love my turkey hunting but this is way above second over anything else like deer hunting I don't even care I live in a good spot I don't care I mean because I'm gonna hunt enough that I'm gonna shoot a deer yeah but this is fun could it to work you know let's work it's type B fun and it's just fun with the camaraderie is because there's a camp involved with it yeah so what happened then is we bailed

out Tuesday we we help get Rick's out of the woods then Mike didn't find his or something like that and then they extend the season so Mike says to me now mind you I I hunted really hard for deer here because I was waiting trying to get this big buck over here so I hunted a lot of hours and it didn't pan out I mean I was out every day every minute I could so when they extended the season Mike says hey you want to go over I guess what is that Wednesday to Saturday or something what they do if I'm not mistaken the the state sets they said they have a nestimated population and they want to shoot 20% and if they and they do that by a certain amount of tag bears and read you know tag and recapture sort of thing and if they don't reach a certain number I think it's 20% I feel like it will extend the season the next week which just for timeline sake it is the week following the end of our rifle season yeah so like it's the week between the last day of Pennsylvania rifle deer season and Christmas it's a week before there and it would be Wednesday

Thursday Friday Saturday yeah okay yeah cuz you're right cuz I know I shot this thing December 20th I remember that but so now we go into that week and I am hunted out yeah I mean as much as you like to hunt much that I like to hunt you get to it all right where like especially that cold yeah and I gave it my all it wasn't like I was half-assing anything I mean I hunted I hunted hard so Mike calls me it says hey you want to go over then you know how we are look you have stands I have stands we'll share stands but like I said to Mike I take your kid you know I already got mine with the bow and he said I Johnny's goose hunting I'm gonna go alone but I I don't like people going alone cuz you never know yeah so I remember saying to my wife you know hey you mind if I go with Mike Saturday I told him I wouldn't go Friday in Saturday he was gonna hunt Friday night and I go back again Saturday so my wife is like do I have a choice with some choice words in there I said what you do so she get hunted out too oh yeah I think she

has already we didn't even start yet that's not a good sign for you so I told him I would I said that to her she said hey I don't have a choice I said well look are you and Jade gonna go Christmas shopping or we just gonna sit there I said if you have plans that's fine and she goes well we are going shopping I said then I'm going hunting yeah exactly so Mike says to me I'll pick you up at noon and I'm like what you know what I mean like again I'm hunting out I don't feel like sitting over there but then if you do the math if he gets me a noon we're over here at 130 you know till you're in it's two o'clock and you know it's dark by five so I thought it's a three hour so I'll do it so we get over there and now I was over there the night Mike calling the stand I went over across the street to look around this was two years ago I guess so I wasn't familiar with where big Rick stand or the guy that owned a place nephew had to stand so me and Mike are walking in and again I'm not in a mood as I'm getting on I'm thinking I should have just stayed home but

here I am so I know where Mike stand is and I said which one of these other two can I see the most I said I don't care which one's better I have a shotgun I want to see the most because it's thick wood like anywhere you're sitting you're not seeing much so I want to extend my range even if it's 20 yards so Mike said well the stand over by the ravines the best but the seat of most is this one I said I'll take this so I climb up and at first of all the railings broke so when you pull it down over you had it's like this so you can't really lean on it to shoot secondly yeah so secondly I'm looking right at Mike so I'm facing this way Mike's up there about 80 yards facing to the right and to the left was the other stand and then a road uh Rouse house it up to like 11 o'clock so Mike's at like 12 o'clock now everything from 12 o'clock to behind me is wide open shooting able to shoot then behind me it drops down a hill to uh residential place so I mean it's pretty far out there

so I can shoot like down and back but I'd rather not so now you know as I'm iron up everything I'm like this is dumb you know what am I doing here so I look up at Mike and he's with his binoculars looking out toward where he had dumped some stuff he had just baited like 120 yards or whatever the night before he ran over so windy he took the bait in and decided he would have gone so now he took in a good pile of bait and he's looking at his binoculars he texted me he goes hey that's gone like so now I'm taking overnight that's a good sign you know there's less than 24 hours and mark mark Leisure had said to me that day if you guys see a bear like it's going to be a nice one because all the younger ones how cold it was like they're dendup he goes but if you remember like Thursday was real warm that week like unseasonably warm 50 55 degrees but then Friday and Saturday got cold I remember it was cold yeah so Mark said he thought because that one warm day the big ones that might just dendup against rocks or something would be moving so everything was like

adding up to hey maybe we have a chance so as I'm sitting there I see the flyers are playing so I start watching the game on my phone I'm looking around still but yeah I always have a head phone set my my bag keeps me sitting there longer I can't hear anyway so I'd count on my eyes every time I hunt well anyway I watched the game till 4 30 and I thought I better start paying attention because you know you only have a half hour of light and I mean I was looking around but not like if you weren't in it like yeah yeah so now I put my headphones away put my phone away and I remember I looked right back left front did that a second time and a third time I looked right there to bear there coming up from like my backside six o'clock but probably 140 yards out so I tags Mike right away I said hey you know one on it way up I'm scoping it and I'm thinking I don't want to take it now my 20 gauge is good they say they can shoot pretty far but again I'm thinking

man I don't need another bear let it go to Mike now I had no clue it was this big all right probably what is John so I didn't realize that you actually saw it first yeah I seen it and I scoped it now again it was brushy you know like heavy woods but like I'm watching him and you knew it was at a glance definitely a nice bear you knew it wasn't a hundred pounder but who knew it was this but anyway so now it's like bits and pieces I know he's going right up there so now I'm watching Mike and first taxi sent me was yeah right and then he's he looked at me and saw me standing with my gun so now he looks over and I see him get down on it bear down on the rifle and he shoots and I hear it run about 20 yards and stop and I'm like all right so now I'm waiting for his reaction a fist pump a thumbs up hey I got him he's just kind of sitting there not even aiming just sitting there so I look out to where I saw the bear I look back at Mike he's still not doing anything like

out of the ordinary and I look back and here he is walking right at me excuse me at about 80 yards so I put the crosshair right on his chest but again I'm not looking how big is this bear I'm focused on my crosshair is on his chest but I thought don't shoot 80 yards if he's walking let him come to 40 you know so at about 60 he turned broad so I don't know if I squeezed it off too quick or if he was still in the thick whatever I take a shot he runs maybe 15 yards stand behind a real big oak tree I could just see his back in and I'm taking I have him hit you know he's just going to lay there so he stands there probably 35 seconds whatever and then he steps out I shot him in a neck and lights out so hear me and Mike both missed it so the only shot you know I shot was in it yeah so like I couldn't believe it I was just waiting for him to go down over there and when he stepped out I thought you know if this bear goes down over the hill that's going to be a long

drag so I tried to drop him thinking I already had one dude aside and then like well he went right down but behind a dead fall so Mike looks down at me and I'm thumbs up I text my god this thing so in the meantime because I didn't even want to be there I put my clip in I didn't put one in the chamber first that my clip so I only had two shots instead of three so when I ripped I ripped open a box of slugs my hands were numb because I wanted another one in case he got up so now when Mike came down I said hey I dropped some shells like they flew everywhere I say can you grab them could I just wanted him not to like go over that way like but I didn't hear this thing at all so now I climb down Mike say do you see the size it is I was like that's a nice bear you know I never really saw the size I just again saw the neck and boom he goes he's huge he's huge I was like I don't think he's that big now in the meantime before Mike got to me I text Mark had got a big bear down now Mike and Mark were at their family Christmas party so now as we're walking up I'm

Elmer Fudden this thing you know I'm walking up and my phone button I know it's Mark but I thought I can't answer it I got to see I get up to this ash tree in there he is I mean he's he didn't move and I'm like oh my god I start shaking like I was 12 years old like could not stop because I was like this is another class of bear that I've never seen yeah so now I call my I call my wife and when I finally stopped trembling that I could dial the phone I call her and she goes hey what's up I said I just shot a freaking monster she says of course you did of course you did yeah then she goes what does this mean I was like well I don't think you're gonna see me tonight because I don't know what we're gonna do here you know so I said let me get off the phone let me get a gutter why I could still see it could it was low light so of course me and Mike are high five and oh my god oh my god now the way he was laying we just kind of bumped him a little bit to get him to flat now like he was kind of like like like that so then I call Mark Mark's like you don't send me a

text like that and then you don't answer your phone I said well how to get him you know make sure he was down he goes you have much like him right with him he's like is he big I was like he's huge I say he's got to be 300 pounds Mark's like no way I said well we drug out big ricks last week and it was uh gutted at 204 I said I know this thing's bigger than that so I imagine 300 you know what I mean like I said he's bigger than ricks you know like not a little bit but at least a hundred pound worth I'd say so me and Dietrich who the week before would grab the back of ricks and one two three we pulled out of the cat tails so let's drag this over here so I ain't got it we grabbed it back leg one two three we pull and it pulled us right back this thing didn't move an inch so I called Andy Pierce my brother is kid uh about coming over so then I called Mark back because I say hey what do I do here so he said I would run to the check station to let him know you have it that way if you drag one out middle of the night or tomorrow morning they're not

questioning when I shot this thing so we went to the check station that guy's like oh that's fine we're here tomorrow uh if you want to run it back then I said well can I just come and get it tomorrow because my buddy's were what an hour and a half two hours away he said that's fine just gutted I said I already have it gutted he told me to go all the game commission to let them a message saying hey tomorrow here's where I'm at so long story short six of us go over work to get it out I'm guessing 300 marks guessing four Pierce kind of went with Mark saying four might not have you never seen it bear so he had no idea so we get to the check station and uh the same guy was there's three game ward one was Park and two were there so the one game ward looks in the back says who shot the 400 pounder and I'm like no way the other guy looks and he goes that thing's 450 easy so the third guy Park and a truck doesn't hear what they say but he comes walking up he looks and he goes who shot the 500 pounder I'd say you guys are all crazy so to me

while the Mike the guy from the check station is hookin to change up and he starts lifting this thing and just when he put pressure on the chain it was over 300 pound never moved the bury it and then once he started going up like it went right over 500 I'm like you've got to be kidding me and then I mean you see the pictures like with my daughter in the paw I mean it was just an immense out of all the paws on and are insane and like the thing I remember when you sent the first picture I get a picture of how you send a text with it it said how big do you think this is was that the one with Mike was standing there Mike was standing with it and you know I have a million questions because I'm like all I see is Mike with a bear I'm like well who shot it I wanted to shoot it this and I'm you know I'm trying to get the play by play when you sent that to me but uh you you're like how big and I said well I said Mike's a big boy I said I wouldn't put Mike under 250 I said and that thing to war spike yeah and I never looked at it that

way till after you said that matter of fact it was like the next day when I was like you know what Mitch did say well he was standing next to it I'm like if Mike is 250 to 270 I thought this bear is probably four plus was my thinking looking at picture but you know what that's like looking at a five inch phone screen and you know I bear hard very hard to judge in many cases I mean I think it's even there's even experience bear hunters that will mistake them at times the funny thing is so I'm behind this thing and with all of us there we said let's roll it over not to set it up for photo nothing but to empty out the cavity you know so I'm behind it Mark went around a front of it as we roll it over now Mark to me is a very experienced bear hunter yes he is he says oh my god looking at it from here when it wasn't just flat and spread eagle like this Mark said Jason you would have no idea how big this bear is again I still don't see it

so they're all take a picture and stuff I said Andy hey send me some of these that's we're sitting there and that's what I think I sent you what the one one which is my favorite picture like I actually want to print it out and put it up here but that's when you can see how big his paws were and his head and I was like oh my god still would have never thought it was that big but it's time for fall food plots and I encourage you to look no further this year been planning vitalized seeds carbon load guys this is a highly diverse plant mix of greens, grasses, brassicas and legumes that is extremely winter hearty it gives great tonnage and it's browse tolerant this thrives after the nitro boost and it acts as a weed barrier in the spring time and not to mention all the benefits it does for your native wildlife giving ample tonnage and sequestering nutrients from deep within the soil check it out at vitalizedseed.com where you can get your order today and learn more about soil health and providing great tonnage to wildlife this fall

yeah so then we took it there they waited and and that was that and I thought if you think about it anything in life or whatever think of all that had to happen the star line up for this all the way back to Mike shooting at that one monday and not getting it because if you would have who'd never went back over there right you know what i mean too his kid going goose hunting big Rick haven't his like that's why I got invited you know what i mean like just a million things lined up for me and then like one thing like I feel bad that Mike missed it but I also was happy both of us missed it and it was only one hole in the neck because it never had to be an argument not that Mike would have ever argued about it you know what i mean he's not that kind of guy yeah but that's one of the things you have to have hashed out with people and I have been in situations that got ugly yeah but once we scundered I mean it was clearly one hole in the neck and and even so when Mike came down I said hey look if you want to tag this thing tag this thing we both shot at it he said well where did you drop it I said oh at the neck and we walked up you

could see the blood he's like yeah that's your bear and then and when we scundered you realized that was the only shot in it but yeah so now of course I didn't want to spend any more money on bear hunting but you're bringing home something like this and you have to remember when you shot so you shot that nice 180 pounder whatever with the shotgun second season and I was giving you hard time that's a nice bear wanted you get it mounted oh who's gonna be mounted it's just gonna be at the taxidermist yeah then you shot your first bow bear has a beautiful V on the chest and I guess I'll get it mounted it's and then you get a shoulder mount and then you should have another one that's a terrible one that one with the V on the chest and with the bow I had to do something yeah like that one and I mean hey that guy did a heck of a job on that and then this one here I remember like when I got home I was like you got him out that whole thing and I'm like do you realize what that cost I know we just talked about that before we went on air here it would look great full but I mean it would take up half my basement it would have cost me twice as much

yeah but you got that deck of money though you're good yeah that's why I'm surprised I didn't just have a rug but you know like Keith Flicker did it and I think he did a heck of a job on it like it yeah I and like it has a white white stripe under the chest and two white spots on it so we kept the left leg back so that kind of stands out and adds that up a little bit but then I find that piece of slate at a pig roast sitting in the woods yeah it looks pretty sweet yeah it looked pretty good there yeah I don't know it's amazing how many times over the years hunting that I've experienced stuff along those lines and what I mean by that is you think about all the hours and trips over that we spent in October and last year's season last year's first segment A season was probably the rougher one of all the ones we went through a lot didn't go right course we saw bears yeah but I think we only killed one bear yeah I think you're the one that got one yeah I miss you miss my

it was just nothing about it could go right um there was just all kinds of hassles and like last year I was really trying to do whatever I could you know I have a goal in my mind 300 and that's what I was going for and I was plaguing myself stressing out over where to go and have a try to get after a bear of this cal burn blah blah blah and and then you have an opportunity like that where you're just going to go hunting with a buddy any 600 pounder comes in and that's how it goes all the time and like honestly that right there that experience you had just made me realize stepstress in about it just go fun yeah and well if you think about it and look you'll understand it's more than anyone listening to this other than Mark and Mike you know my outlook is if I see one I'm shooting it yeah I paid the money to come here we spent a lot of time over their work and for them in the off season not even we've been over there more now than people will hunt these things oh 100% but and to me I did all that work I want one so and I don't even know how to say this because it's not

a dig on anybody and also not a dig on myself but I'm the one who ends up with this when I'm the one who could have cared the least about how big of a bear was so like would you just set there instead of overdoing it in your mind just go hunt and have fun and it's going to happen it's going to happen I would have never I would have never thought that day rolling over there I was coming out of there with a boon and crock at bear which I didn't mention yet I had to think scored and it measured 21 and 616 so it's in a all-time book that's pretty cool yeah it's a mate so top the bottom which one is which so those three scores in your case oh there's four of there on top is that one your first one yeah that was the first one um Derek Derek and did that Derek and the dipping and stuff and then that one down there that's kind of off-colored when I gave flicker that hide so he could mount it he said he wanted to pay me for it's like look I don't I just don't

want to throw it away so he said how about I do a skull mount for you for the hide I was like okay so he did that one the next one there is this one that you were with me that oh yeah yeah so that's a male you can kind of see the difference a little bit and then that's a female also and then you got that which is ridiculously big it really is it's incredible so you've been at it from every angle Jason because you you've hunted them like we talk about hunting them in Pennsylvania with groups making pushes working your tail off from the physical sense going through nasty stuff to go kill them you've done it in the October seasons you know we've talked about this how many times they we've done sometimes seven eight nine ten trips over there scouting and preparing before we even yeah bring a bow out and go and you've killed them that way and then you had this experience with this big one when you think about take take your take your drive out of it take your like I

got to do this to appease myself for as far as how many times I go over there where do you think the most weight comes into in successfully fulfilling tags in these trips well so this one here obviously if anyone came in here right now and scanned my wall they'd be like this is incredible well sure this is the least I had involved in in a bear hunt sure my detrick is 98% responsible for me shooting this bear right right you know what I mean absolutely I just happened to be there but he did all the work he did the stands he did the feeding he did everything just invited me with and he missed a shot and I got it so I mean I want to say this is my most successful thing because it's amazing but it was my least that I mean I went into it like I don't want to be here I want to flyers game it was everything you can do wrong and on to get rewarded like this however

mark made a good point mark said but you were still in that tree that day I wasn't he said Mike wasn't you know I mean he goes so you were over there and you got it so you can't say it was luck you were still you're still where you knew there was bear you know now it's amazing that this was there but my favorite one though well the one with the muddle loader how that day went and they called you over and said hey they keep coming that wasn't a great day but this one here with the bow just to sag on with the bow was was amazing you know so like it's almost like a turkey hunt everyone's different everyone is yeah now we got a good group and one thing like when I deer hunt a deer hunt alone or maybe with a guy across the street maybe my nephew but I ain't like this we're all comparing notes we're all comparing photos you know hey you're going over tomorrow I'm gonna go Sunday you know like we're all working together we're all getting bait you're running bait here I'm picking it up there we're you know doing whatever we're doing but

like when we get over there to me it's fun it's a fun week it is you know now I know Mark did say because they're going to Montana today to hunt out that Jared's not gonna be picky Jared told Mark like this year he's not gonna be too picky because I think he's only going to want her two days which changes your outlook yeah and Jared never got one so why not why not take one agree I mean we talked about it I gave him a hard time on that before yeah and it's taking a minute especially if your time's limited you can't be picky you know uh so it should be interesting this year um like you're going over I think tomorrow right I'm going over tomorrow tomorrow is my first trip over yeah but you're gonna go to known grounds but just to make sure that it's well I shouldn't say that I mean you're going to a couple spots that we never we're never in but yeah so like my we've been going down bear hunting since 20 fall or uh December 2022 now I have stepped foot back into the woods that I went into 2022 uh since that year but since 2023 we're hunting these areas

and scoured from out so I've said this before I think there's two different scouting that we're doing I remember one the scouting that we did in the beginning was just learning the area learning the woods learning the nuances of getting in and out learning what tree species and plant species make up there are where there's food or where there's the potential for food and then once you get to know that you can kind of redirect your scouting so like tomorrow there's a spot that I'm going to go for I believe we're going to go first um I've ran a camera there two years ago I had a camera there so that's a spot I like yeah so I ran a camera there two years ago and I got one bear picture and the reason I got one bear picture is because the first thing that came by it was a bear and ripped the camera off then after that I was having trouble with the camera I never replaced it and never went back but um I knew it was a good spot there was corn in the area the corn was

always demolished it had oak trees that were dropping acorns there was bear sign and water right there's the reek there's water um and last year um you know I hunted most of the week with the bow and I had some places that were new to me that I hunted they weren't going well I wasn't seeing anything I decided to just stand on my back bow in my arm go for a walk scout and hunt the way I would in Pennsylvania and this spot that I'm going to go scout tomorrow I went in at 10 11 o'clock walking around saw bear saw there was tons of bear crap saw there was there was acorns dropping and I did a hangin hunt and we saw bear I didn't kill one but we saw bear and everything about it the way it sets up and knowing how to lay out is the stuff I'm going there with two things tomorrow I want to get in I want to look at see if there's any acorns acorns on the ground or in the trees and then I want to look at these areas and say if I would choose to run a bait site here

where would I put the bait site where would I hang a stand potentially maybe hang a camera to get in get out I'm going to speed scout it yeah then I'm going to the next spot and the next spot but you have an idea like you have a tenor area you're not just and this is not for me and you but this is for the people listening you you have mapped out you're going to a b c d like you're going in with a mission you're not just randomly parking and hoping you know Mitch has done a lot of footwork for all of us and when we go in we go in knowing we have potential but how much potential is here and like the other spot that I want to check out tomorrow this is the thing I don't know like I'm I've got a finite amount of time before I have to be home tomorrow and there's an area we have looked at on the map and driven past for the last four years three years and none of us is step foot in it but we've talked about we've talked about it and talked about it and I finally said to you I said I'm going back to this here I want to check it out I remember what I said I said if you don't I am or Andy will but I'm glad you are because I

believe now when we do a follow up to bear season if anyone listens to this I believe Mitch will are one of your buddies have action on that that's fine I think so too I think it sets up too well and we've never stepped foot in it but we know enough about that area yeah and we know enough about what it has to offer and just the habitat and everything else there there is going to be bears yeah now how many how big I have no idea but I think it is going to set up well so I'm going over there with a fixed mission but that scouting I'm doing this year is a lot different than it was three years ago yeah I mean scouting we did three years ago we had to learn the place while we were going and that's a that's a different thing well then if you look at success too like let's say you go in there tomorrow and you like it like we think you will I mean look we sat here that night looked at the um topo that was one thing we did this year I liked yeah so we did that and so you're going in there with a mission but then success to me would be if you go in there

or your buddy's going or whoever decides to sit in there and has action to me that's successful now did they kill one maybe maybe not maybe what a big enough maybe they didn't like their shot whatever but I think you're going to come out of there and be like yeah that was uh that was exactly what we thought it was going to be well we don't know is just what the terrain the layout the vegetation how it's we know it's going to be thick I mean I got a feeling we're going to be bushwhacking it's lots of thing getting in there could be the the issue it could be but I mean we're just going to have to do it and let's face it um can you can you be lazy and kill stuff sure I mean there's people that shoot stuff within a hundred yards of the road all the time but I mean you think about the success that we've had going on this trip we've put a lot of work into with a lot of scouting a lot of boot grounds but you found an area that you'd like to target just because it's it's been producing here after year so like going back to what I'd asked you before like what about the process gives you confidence for opportunity in the fall well so if you think of

that one the both your bearer my first one ever which was 2017 okay so this will be my eleventh year hunting jersey um actually one year I guess we couldn't they had closed it or something yeah are they open it like Tuesday or something you you and your buddy went like Tuesday marked had that stroke or whatever monday remember that's right but anyway when when we went back then it was totally different than hunt now and I know you heard it on this podcast I know you heard it from me a hundred times if it ain't for Mitch here I'm still I'm still driving bear with that gang but instead we broke off studied hard spent a lot of time over and the success rate that's one thing like my wife gets mad cut them always doing something but I told her look you know I'm doing what I say I'm doing because look at our group we're seeing 40 bearer in a week yeah as a group that's amazing but it's it's not at random it's because of the work we put in so to make it funny

of course every time I shoot one you have people buddies hey I'd love to go over there yeah it's that let me know when you want to go over you know like I'll tell you how to scout it like just from my basement the other week we scouted where you're going tomorrow and so you know that next year I want to go so when I shoot this thing and now everybody's like hey I really want to go it's like okay so I took some waypoints that we gave up on not because they're bad but because we got more fun so we got better yeah so and and look me and Mark and I know you were in that place with Mark but me and Mark went in there one day a good day scouting and it just didn't turn us on like everyone had him you might like to hunt over flats or ridges I like hunting that grassy swan edge swamp edge you know that's just me so I told my buddies I was like here's what I'm going to tell you I had I had them here was funny it was almost like I was teaching a class I had these three grown men who I've known well Steve I just kind of met a year ago but Kenny and

Kenny and Rich I knew for ever since I worked at Decker but anyway and I'm like okay everyone get your phone out open you're on the axon I'm explaining it and I sent them the pins that where I'd go so they go over there one day and Kenny here's a garage door open and he walks over to the guy and says hey we're going to be bear hunting here what do you know about it now that's a little risk over there because you might as someone say you know get the hell out of here yeah well this guy said I know they're in my driveway every day come on in no way yeah Kenny's like come on in he's like are you here by yourself Kenny goes why I got two guys my buddies were over there he said bring him over take some in to the garage open to fridge he said yeah every kind of beer you could imagine they sit there for like an hour this guy's telling him you know every Tuesday or whatever the garbage goes they're taking out I got to lock up my garbage you know on and on and on so Kenny says hey look man it's really nice talk I did you've been more than welcoming but you know we came over we got a scout so the guy said yeah look right in here that's where I gave him the pin but he also sent

him down a road to a park a lot like maybe a mile and told him go up over this way because everyone over there deer hunts but no one bear hunts so Kenny and I'm quick rush over a quick set of camera well now they're going over at least one of them going once a week but between them they're probably going twice a week and they got there so now every day at work they're like thank you thank you thank you I was like look I told you I'll give you the spots and it's up to you you guys are doing what we're doing you're going over and that's why you're going to be successful I said if you just went in and said at that pin maybe you see one maybe you don't but now you're you're putting a luck in your own favor so I'm excited for those guys too but again look how many times we take a bear to the check stage what do they tell us break your friends and buy people over like we got to get rid of these bears so there's a problem over there it's amazing how many bear are there and it makes sense why there's so many bears just because of the habitat and the places for them to be you yeah it is the rules which I like the rules I mean look I will be the first one to say can't shoot a mom with

cubs under 75 pounds or the cubs I love that because it's just my belief is not to slaughter these things as dumb as that sounds yeah yeah now teach his own but to me I wish they would do that here in Pennsylvania you know because just the mother child thing however what do you do when now they're 12 bear on my camera that are untouchable right now so how's that helping their population it's not that's not you know so that's where they're they're kind of hanging themselves by doing that well that I mean that we've been told through the grapevine this is not legislated this is just through the grapevine kind of stuff that that's there to appease correct folks that have had their hands and the rule making processes this hunt has gone on and I mean I know a lot of people I've talked to over the years that they don't want to shoot a south cubs and hey I have no problem with

that here's the thing I say all the time Jersey has a high bear population they want to reduce the population but but second of all and very importantly there's a lot of research out there that shows that Denning instinct with mom is innate in that first year that even if they are orphaned their first year of birth they're gonna den and the success rate and some of the studies that I've looked at is pretty high now I'm not saying just shoot them yeah but it it doesn't make me feel quite as bad I mean I'm human and I had this conversation it was funny we were with my family my in-laws side and none of them are hunters my brother-in-law just got married you married a girl who is from Europe and she's a sweetheart and she always does her best to engage and everybody ask him about that and that includes knowing that I'm the hunter and she genuinely asked me questions

about it and we were in a family gathering and I forget what happened we were talking somehow hunting got brought up and she said I said something about I said well I said it's sad when you kill something and she looked at me with like this strangest face she's like it's sad I said well yeah I said I'm not I said I don't enjoy killing I said I mean it's part of the hunt yes there's an exciting piece I said but when I go and recover an animal I said there's absolutely remorse a sliver of remorse I'm excited yeah it's it's the weirdest thing and only a hunter can explain that I mean I think there are people that probably don't feel remorse I think there's some goofballs out there that just can't get enough just to say they're killing stuff absolutely but like I think it's getting worse as far as that the longer I hunt the more I hunt the more I shoot something the more I'm I have remorse of killing something like that you the critter used to be here and

that's not yeah and there's a part of that said and she was like I would have never thought that you like felt that way or thought that way it's like yeah it's just it's just part of the process but all that to say I enjoy eating these things I've said it before I it's better than deer me yeah I really think it's like it's weird our groups you don't want to think so everyone I talk to is like bear me that's because nobody knows how to get here and I used to think it was bad too but guess what if you if you handle it right and if you make it that like it's not hard to make if you basically throw the right seasonings in and slow cook a lot of it is first of all it will knock the socks off if any deer roast ever had I mean six ways till Sunday have you tried making like burgers or anything out of it yeah I know because I do it marks baloney is no you know you can't make me make baloney yeah and I mean oh my god and I mean divided up you know so everyone gets a little bit yeah you know well the baloney that that that recipe they do I don't know

what all they do to it but they haven't figured out if they mix deer meat with the bear meat it like counteracts the amount it's not too greasy yeah but you know deer meats dry with no fat it like they have got the right ratio deer bear meat mix for the consistency and texture it's and then the flavors fantastic last year I threw 80 pounded up bear in there and 20 pound to beave okay so that was that mix and then we got a 100 pounds and everyone got a couple rolls of it but you remember the one I shot with the muzzle loader that one I think it was an 80 pound batch and it was 50 50 deer bear because I basically gave them all the trim from the buck I'd shot in Pennsylvania yeah and then we did the bear meat and they throw that one of mine was in there too I believe might have been I don't remember they did our batch I know we had a lot of baloney because I had baloney for a long time but the baloney's are good um how do you eat the loins I don't you don't what do you

mean you don't I don't eat the loins off my deer I usually give them my one buddy Mark Miller doesn't hunt but loves like he's cooking up all kinds of stuff so okay I always give it to him oh you share the people oh yeah yeah like Andy last year I think I gave him one he actually made a ham out of the big one one high-end that was delicious oh the ham are good I haven't done that for a while but he did that with this one could there was so much meat it was like what are you gonna do with all this my wife always makes that bear rose pie that we take to the well I think you usually come in like yeah you come in late on that remember you washed my pan and I forgot my pan up there well yeah last year I came in late you had it the first freaking day and I came the second day was it the rest of the week it turkey yeah but no I mean the like for me the way I've been doing it is the bear I'll cut as many roasts as I possibly can and like for me I've heard people that will make steaks or treat you know cure the loins or something I've just been using the loins

and slow cooking those too like a lot of time I'll serum and then slow cook them yeah and then any trim meat I've been making sausage or baloney um and then like the deer meat sausage sausage is delicious I got I got a recipe um I shouldn't say I got a recipe I had a recipe made at the shop that I took it to get processed the one I shot in Pennsylvania last year they had an apple maple sausage and said I said do you think that would be good with bears I think it'd be excellent and it is excellent like I'll make it with like eggs in the morning and stuff it's delicious but the sausage is good I have not tried bear burgers and I've heard so many people say you gotta have you got a pat burgers with bear and make bear burgers that they're so great not like bacon burgers or anything like not like I'm not saying that they don't put seasonings and and and put stuff in it to doctor it up like you might even a regular burger but they're they're not talking about cutting it with beef or anything like that maybe add bacon bits in or where but they're saying bear burgers are

so good I haven't tried that well now did you time my sticks here yeah they were phenomenal yeah so I made sticks with uh I think at first I tried a 10 pound batch because I thought I have you know I mean if you mess it up you throw away 10 pound big deal but it was like nine pounds of bear or maybe nine and a half and a half a pound of bacon or something like that it wasn't much and I put that high temp cheese in and I was delicious so then I made more and it was great so now it's like baloney and sticks like Mark makes a baloney and I make the sticks and we trade everything out but yeah that that I really like and like you said I'd rather eat this than any deer I've ever shot so far I mean I like having venison burger but I mean the bear meat for me has been delicious and like even my wife who she pooped who's it all the time and she she gave me hell earlier this year about how many bear do I need to shoot a sudden I don't need to shoot any I said but I like eating them and it's fun to go hunting for them yeah well that's where we're at because after I got this she's like so that's it like you reach the top of the game it's like yeah but like

that one of my goal was to tag out after six years and quit you know what I mean so that's why I have that because it's a new challenge yeah it's a new challenge and if I get one with that recurve I'm gonna be over the moon even if it's a hundred ten pound bear so we've kind of we haven't really gone into too much detail about you know you know detailed scouting or anything like that I didn't really anticipate I was expecting this to be a preseason BS session just kind of sharing our experiences but you've been preparing for bear season the last few years a certain way right you've been you've you've scoured run cameras put stands up based on an area experience in season scouting preseason scouting right and you get set up and you've had a lot of luck you've killed two bear with the with your compound you've had a couple other encounters with the compound you got some with the gun now you got this recurve are you doing anything different this year for preparations compared to other years well I I shoot this thing almost every day other than like

if I'm not around or something we got a sock or game or whatever I also move my trees today now this this is where you talk you just said experience time in the woods whatever so now you know where my setup is I was off the ridge looking up on the ridge for a 25 yard shot now the winds always blowing I don't know my east west north south over there I just know looking at that ridge wind blowing from the right to the left hmm so I moved my stand well right into the tree where I shot the first one mm-hmm years ago because now it's an 11 yard shot to the trail they always come out on that's why I'm practicing everything from 15 and in I'm basically handcuffing myself to a but that's probably good for a stick bow yeah and to think of it as though like so let's say this week coming to goes now I am shooting my compound too because like let's say I mess up I'm not I'm not over there to fail so let's say I'm not prepared enough to shoot I'm not going to take it

just say I'm taking it now you know I've been out here shooting we shot the other night now we got together and like I shot two good shots so I could do it but I'm still out there to be ethical with it but to me like again I don't need another bear rug another bear head like they all all those antides over there say oh this is what are they called a trophy hunt I don't know what they call it but it's not I try to ignore them no but you know what I mean it's not this is uh like if me and you were in it just to say I killed another bear we'd go over Thursday with a muddle odor and shoot a bear yeah pretty much you know what I mean but that's not what like if even if you think about it like I messed up on that one Tuesday last year and then Thursday rolled around I have my muddle odor sitting in that house and I refuse to take and then shot one Friday with the bow that's right remember so it was like I made that decision and kind of like this like if I if I hunt up till Thursday don't get a chance what it is what it is now if I move to where

maybe I can see further maybe I take the compound but I'm still not taking the muddle odor well that is that is one of the tough pieces so like you set yourself up and you you talked about this with me before like you you've gone the route and it's not that one way is right one way is wrong it's just style you have gone the route of you know a spot and you put a lot of investment into that location and I've taken the approach of I'm trying to have multiple spots like options and not really honing in and fine-tuning one spot right and last year I didn't have success you did but you've also been in the situation where you put a lot of hours into a standing you start questioning your sanity well if you think of the one with the V on it Monday nothing happens Tuesday I saw the one you got with the muddle odor not close enough to shoot or whatever happen and I remember Tuesday and I my pleasure saying to me were you going tomorrow is like back in there he was how can you keep going back in there every day I was like I think I remember telling

this story before there was 40 piles of bear bear scout around in a circle of 50 yards around my stand let's say I said to Mike if we just came over here today didn't scout or anything and I walked back to this ridge and seen this I would be in this tree tomorrow so why would I leave it you know what I mean and then the next morning I shot this and he said I got to give you credit I couldn't have kept going to that same tree it does get to you after well it does but the thing that is like to me and we did it last year you went to that new spot and then after I messed up and after Mike messed up you remember we went in there I don't know if you left or why you didn't go there that day but remember me and Mike went in there and then I'm standing there thinking so here we are a brand new property when we scouted 10 other ones that were not given a chance like to me it made no sense that what are we doing here we know what's over there but we only gave it one sit but now we're in a place where we don't even know if there's a bear on the ground well the only reason you did is because I sent you guys there and we had had our chances that we both

said then let us be to guinea pigs right I think something you know what I mean and then of course you didn't see it there but it is funny I that is that is one observation I will make I mean you think about what's happened the last few years was that two years ago that was two years ago when I shot the one with the flint lock on my way down I went to help Jared and Mark look for that one Jared hit and we didn't get but if you think to that day they hunted that spot all day Monday Tuesday morning and went to a different spot Tuesday afternoon and guess what showed up now they went back Wednesday and they got a chance yeah and Thursday they saw bear at that spot so they did go back but they took a break off the stand they put you know they helped heck they had 12 they probably had 16 plus hours in that tree stand right but if you think about it so think of that 16 hours on stand but think of the hours traveling over there to be and also how long your camera sat there that told them every day sometime during the day that bear was going to be there

well and that's that's kind of my point so like that happened to them last year you remember I hunted that new spot with Aaron we hunted there two or three days did not see a bear camera just dried up and then I started moving to some other spots and I had some encounters with bear last year the spots that I did my hanging hunts I had encounters just it didn't come together for me but the one hanging hunt I did I'm sitting in a tree in six o'clock my phone buzzes and look I don't don't tell me this is going to be a bit sure enough there's a bear at the first place I was two days ago so one of the things that I'm starting to ponder with this whole bear hunting thing I have had the mindset as a deer hunter and some of this is my own interest some of this is probably listening to other people and taking their advice and having being influenced but I do like the bounce around when it comes to deer hunting I don't like to let too much sand you know go to this spot go to that spot you know keep things as fresh as possible I've been successful shooting deer that way

and I think you can be successful shooting bear that way too but the reality of it is if you do your homework to get in get out and you hunt with decent winds you don't see a bear it's a lower population animal there's not as many deer I don't know about Jersey but in reality there's not as many bears or deer and if you don't see a bear the first time it doesn't necessarily mean you should give up like I am honestly thinking this year with the experiences I've had the last three years and my habit to keep bouncing around I think I want to scale that back a little bit this year so we're going with three days on the muscle order this year I'm taking my buddy Nick he's never bear hunted and my goal this year is to get him his first bear and then my buddy Travis who I've hunted with and I've known him since I'm in grade school he's never killed a bear he's going bear hunting we never killed one those two guys my goal is those two punch their tag I don't need to shoot a bear my priority is going to be those two guys and I think my strategy with them and myself is we're going to do our homework we're going to have the spots that we think are best

and we're going to ride it out yeah with the exception that if I know the wind is blowing right where the bear come from we'll deviate but if you know we're going for the muscle order hunt muscle at hunt Thursday Friday and Saturday and if the wind is right to sit in that stand all three days I think that's where I'm going to be yeah well see here's the difference I think between us also I don't bear hunt Pennsylvania so you guys know the big wood mentality and how to bear hunt you find one or find the food on a big mountain and you push it so you're it would be hard to do but still you would be able to break that where I don't know that tradition true you know what I mean so that's why I know like so I wanted two spots this year one for a backup in case wind or whatever and that's I'm putting all the eggs in that basket now will it fail me maybe but also have it set up for a close shot at both spots yeah you know I'm not going to an oak flat where I can see a hundred yards so it's cheat me out of something you know what I mean I

it's going to be they're on me or they're not that's that's the way it is but I'll be fine with it if I leave their Saturday and I didn't get one but I gave it a good try with that absolutely you know but if I get one it'll be because of my move that I made to get closer to the trail on the downwind side of it and all the travel over there bait them and whatever else you know and I we only I've proved it you've proved it we don't need to bait the shoot pairs no like we the first two that I ever killed I didn't bait you know the the one you shot with the muzzle loader I shot mine with the bow there I didn't run a single thing a bait over there that year the next year I don't think I ran any bait either that was the year I took my flint lock but I I scouted areas the only thing I was doing to try to entice pictures for inventory is I was putting a little bit of scent out yeah one of the things that works over there that's legal um I just take like a food based scent it's not food it's just a scent um like vanilla or something and mix

it with a oil so it sticks and just spray it in front of the camera to get a picture well yeah and that being said too if you think about it like I talk about baiting our baiting is like you said for inventory we're not sitting over bait well no you legally can't yeah but I mean you could at a hundred yards but we don't because we're bow hunting you know what I mean so when we talk about baiting is to say okay this is a spot I want to go we keep them there keep inventory like there's constantly different bare rolling through like there's a male there now that I saw twice this week that I don't know where he came from and now he could be gone again but at least I know hey there's like I would take him in a minute and then he got the mom's a little ones I can't shoot but it's still if he shows up it would be definitely worth hunting back there well and the thing I think about too like the where we've chose to hunt are locations that even if you didn't bait would be good locations yeah but the the putting the bait out number one it's fun yeah like it's a new

experience I never got to do that in Pennsylvania so I kind of wanted to see if you'd learn something yeah even though I can't bait in Pennsylvania my experience I've said this about deer hunting like I came from the private land side of deer hunting when I grew up and I got to have a lot of experiences hunting private land that people didn't screw with and experienced things that my buddies never got to experience now that was a a blessing for me I didn't get to experience that but the thing I learned in that is I got to see deer do things nobody did and I got to learn things that people didn't get to see right so my thing is you have Pennsylvania bear this is literally how it goes I scout for food we do group hunts or I I stand on those locations and I will go years sometimes without seeing a bear in Pennsylvania and then when you do see one I think about the the three that I've killed in Pennsylvania I guarantee you all three of them

I'm without a doubt my mind all three of them from the time I saw them to the time I pulled the trigger was less than a minute and I'm gonna also say that two of the I would be willing to say it's 30 seconds like it's just like holy crap there's a bear in the laurel boom it's done so you don't get to learn and experience so like the thing with the baiting and why I like to do it is not because I want to have a I want to keep them coming daily like you do in Canada I'm not trying to put 110 gallons of bait out and have them coming like it's a smorgasbork I mean I'd love to but that's a lot of work and money and money and that's the other thing too I mean how much money do I need to spend a bear I've I've killed like five or six bears I don't need to keep shooting them and do it but I think you learn but I think what the bait does is it keeps some bears frequent in an area a little bit better now if you go to a spot that already has oak oak trees in their drop in hay corns like they're coming to that area already you probably

wouldn't need it but I do like the bait there because it's just like I seen to the cake yeah and if you think about it too it's their rules not ours so if anyone's against what we're saying here that's what their book says yeah well I don't even care about that but it's yeah but you know what I mean like I just don't want people to be like oh these guys over there cheat no we're not cheating we're doing what they say we're doing what's legal yeah it is kind of unique like you you set bait out but you can't sit right over which is different but there is some value in some learning and like I there's listen there's people that are doing this like Brian and his buddies you know from timber life those guys are true New Jersey bear hunters like like if you want to get advice about hunting bear from New Jersey don't listen to me we have a good time but we know the thing or two about bears we've been successful but you know they take it to a new level and targeting four five six hundred pound bears at a nice guy too very nice guy you'll give you the time of day that being said you know the whole going back and being successful like I look we'll

give spots away we'll give this we'll give that but we're still like I'm torn because like my wife says you should quit but I love the game but again like you're talking gas money bait money your time so it's like do you do you take some random go there put them in your stand and then he shoots and says oh that was easy when he doesn't realize everything you did you know and that's the thing that's where I'm kind of torn and that's kind of why I'm leaning this way yeah I still want to be successful for the work I put in but I'm not against helping you bait or this guy bait or like I even told you if I get one Monday Tuesday or Wednesday before I'll say we want to your guys Thursday you know what I mean like I'm not gonna hey I got one I'm going home taking my ball leaving you know but again like I'm adding to my excitement here and hell I might shake so bad I can't even draw this thing back I don't know like my buddy Travis like what's cool is Travis he he's one

of those guys that you know he's he gets something in his mind and then he wants to do it so like he's been seeing me go on this hunt talking about it and he always said he's like I want to shoot a bear at some point in my life he said I just never like focused on it and he said to me I don't remember when it was sometime between last bear season and this bear season he's like he goes hey he said I don't want to pose he said but I want to kill the bear next year he said he said I'd love to come over and and help you guys so Travis is one of those guys he wants to do it one of my best friends since I'm a kid and he wants to scout with me he wants to bait with me so that's one of those things like I have absolutely no problems saying you take the absolute best spot because you're doing it with me and then I guess the one exception like Nick Nick has been a friend of mine now for a few years doing his podcast Nick has the show Honour and we've hunted

pigs together got to know each other and you know one of the thoughts I had too as we've talked like we've hunted together we've done things together you know Nick's talked about you know hunting in other states and doing stuff together and I had thrown it out there I said if you guys ever wanted to experience bear hunting I would gladly take you so you know Nick's getting a little bit of special treatment but I mean he's coming from an area where I don't know if he'd ever experience that unless he's been money and you know that's just me being a friend and being a host but you know I do like the idea of you know working with people like you talked about we have so much fun doing this together and you know last few years you and I haven't even really been baiting and doing a lot of that stuff together we've been doing our own thing but in the same camp kind of atmosphere and communicating yeah that's communicating like we've been really good with okay you got that lined up I'm gonna go this way because your timeline of mine don't line I'm an early morning gotta be like Sunday we're going over we're leaving here 430 could I gotta be back

I'm leaving tomorrow like 435 o'clock yeah so I mean but usually you're like hey I can go because the kids are out for the afternoon or something like that so it is like it's funny I'll say this on the podcast last Saturday I'm up in the Poke Nose and I said to my wife hey you know before we went up there I said we're gonna be an hour away from where I hunt compared to two hours from here said it doesn't make sense not to use that so my wife actually went with and baited bear with me she was just like a hundred percent but I told her if I get one it's her fault that's hysterical I know Leanne she she him halls around all the time because I'm I made that comment what I just said a while ago I said I don't need to shoot another bear and then I started talking about the bear hunt and I started to talk about Pennsylvania bear season and one bear seasons or I said vomit at the gun license I said maybe I'll go down segment b she goes I thought you didn't need to shoot one I thought you were done I thought you were I said now I'm not done I said if I go in segment a and a bear walks in front of me that I want to shoot I'm going to shoot it and guess what

if I go up the camp the following week when it's open and a bear comes in front of me and I want to shoot it I'm probably going to shoot it and you know what if for some dumb reason I shoot two bear and still think I gotta go to New Jersey and segment b and another one walks in front of me that I want to shoot I'm probably gonna shoot it now am I trying to do that no but were you trying to shoot a 600 pound bear no but you know what's funny it's and I hate to say this but now my buddy well Andy and Pierce yeah and Kenny and Steve and Rich never got there well maybe maybe Rich did on a like baited hunt on North or something but like those guys are all in they wanted to like Kenny says if I'm gonna shoot one bear and quit as I get it's what I said and it didn't happen but anyway so me and you were going to with a different mindset and because we talked about earlier you relax a little bit that's when you that's when things happen to you you're not overhunt them like those guys are gonna be like oh man I really want a bear but I'm only hunt three days

so now I'm gonna move where I'm just gonna sit there and be like sooner or later I'm gonna shoot one here you know but my mindset now especially after that big guy is so what oh absolutely yeah again I'm trying I'm not not trying I'm still putting the effort in and I want to get one but like because I'll just be like this is fun I'll probably be the one exactly I'll get another one I'll pull bear out I'm I am fearful that too because like um my plan we'll see how it all pans out with the scouting trips I mean I get big ideas in my head I thought I was gonna be over there by now at this point in a year I still haven't made it over tomorrow's the first trip um but in my mind like Travis and Nick and I it's three of us and my thought was I was gonna run three sites and I was not gonna make one for each of us and go I was gonna have those two go to the two best spots and then the third spot um I was gonna leave as a as a spare let's

say we miss one and mess it up or you know you go into one day the wind swirling you chase some bears out you lose confidence and you want it a backup I'm gonna give the backup spot to them but what I'll probably do is um you know Travis will be pretty much on his own because he'll be doing some scouting I'll probably get Nick said in in a spot and I'm gonna hunt that area but I'm probably gonna do it the old fashioned way when I hunt the woods I'm gonna put my tree stand on my back and go do a hanging hunt in a good area in the vicinity and see what happens and I'm I'm so afraid of what you just said but it's going to happen to me and you talked about this when first asked if about bringing this guy over and we talked about if opportunity knocks you got to take it well you know what I'm saying like I'm not going over there I didn't buy a license to not shoot but let's say you're you're satisfied if you never get another bear you're happy but let's say you're sitting there he walks up you cannot be like well if I let him go he might

go 500 yards a neck yeah you got to take him that wouldn't you know what I mean it is what it is if if the cards are dealt that you know you got to do it 100% and that's what that's that's that's why I go back to what I just said earlier with this whole bear one of the theories I have and I'm gonna try to stick to it is I think I've learned the last few years I'm repeating myself but I think I have learned the last few years what you just said if you invest time preseason you know it's a good spot and there's nothing in the season that's taking you away from that spot other than you second guessing yourself and having that little jitter anxiety like the logic you've used and the experiences you've had of going back and the experience I've had of bouncing I really think for bear hunting personally you got to be patient yeah like if if if all fingers point to here and there's nothing pulling you away I think you I feel like I got to ride it out yeah and let's say

I go this year and all fingers point towards this direction and maybe it's not me sitting maybe it's Travis or Nick sitting in that spot and they have their three days and it doesn't come together I'll go back to the drawing board yeah same thing with myself though like if it I'll go back to drawing but I really do feel I've learned the last few years I need to be a little bit more patient when I don't forget the tactic we talked about maybe trying and segment B about four of us going I'm anxious to see how that works and or maybe even more you know but set a perimeter yeah around a bait that you're not hunting over to bait but you're hunting the travel corridors that one person would get a bear absolutely I think that is I think that does have a lot of potential I keep thinking too about the way I've done cameras so way I've done cameras lately is I start going over the one year the early so I went over July late July we went over but usually August September

going over hanging cameras running cameras and last few years I've pulled those cameras the last day of the season whereas the season goes while we're down there in October I'll pull the cameras be done and I keep thinking man you could probably learn a lot if you'd let some of these regular cameras soak in some of these spots and just learn what happens to then if we go down in December direct us a little bit maybe we want to hey I've been getting pictures of bear let's think of that one you just told me the other day let's dive up on that one spot because they mode the corner early and when you pull that camera it was like what what was I doing yeah because you had that big one all of you set a handful of times yeah broad daylight cut cornfield you know what I mean so again you we pull the can and I'm the same way because I pull my cameras to put him here and see what's going on in the rut but if you look at big Rick and my glass here they kept going they kept putting their time big Rick had five or six nice bear on he did

when he shot hit nice say nice bear anything over 150 pounds of me is a nice bear it is a nice bear but he had he had that beast on there that we're all hoping still alive no one had them on camera yet but like he was on there his track and a snow was like that big you know but again Rick never shot a Jersey bear he wasn't about to pass one up one shot a nice one shot a nice one but when it's freezing cold to wait for one that's a little bigger you know whatever if he's especially if you never I learned from them that you know what they're on a some here you got to keep going with the effort you know not just go what we always say that someone just goes and hunt well I'm one of the things too for me like I have been how I say this I haven't been putting any stock into the December hunt because usually by then I'm running low on vacation I'm running low on my wife's patients and like it just doesn't always align up for me to keep hunting because because that the week before that I always have an annual deer hunt at camp and I'm gone Wednesday

night till Saturday or Sunday and then for me to turn right back around and go Monday I always felt like I was pushing buttons to do that but at the same time I have more vacation this year we don't have field hockey we will have a little bit more freedom I am actually thinking maybe I'm going to keep some cameras rolling this year and see what keeps coming well and here's another thing think of the number the sheer number of animals on their feet in October compared to December yeah so if you're going to pick one you want to hunt the no October season oh absolutely yeah if they have a season in September if they had a season September October and and December I'd go in the September season yeah it's just that it seems like the earlier you can hunt bear the better that's why I've been so intrigued like some of these states like New York at parts of the state has bear seasons open in September West Virginia has some September bear seasons I keep thinking like man I kind of want to check that out well I think they're going to have to change some kind of rules eventually over there because I don't think they're gaining any ground

I get you have the anti-hunter like get that and again like you said earlier to your system all there whatever we're not we're not all animals over there trying to just kill kill kill but yet you you have to have no matter where it is a balance of what the area can handle or you're going to have human interaction oh 100% like from a management side you're I agree with you I don't know that it'll ever happen especially when you think about what's happening with predator hunting throughout this country and you think about what's like Colorado I just read there's been an uptick in people bear conflicts in the state of Colorado and they got rid of you can't hunt with hounds out there I don't know I don't think he can use bait maybe he can but I know that they restricted some of that they used to have a spring bear hunting Colorado and there's no longer spring bear hunt so they've limited the seasons and they're not doing enough and it's the same thing with

New Jersey but it just seems like and we have this problem like the common sense of biology and wildlife management doesn't always get implemented based off of which which is the loudest squeaky hub is getting degrees you know well if you think about it now like I said earlier there's 12 it's a mom and four a mom and three a mom and two really that keep coming and going now think about that so let's say I can't touch him this year but let's say next year I decided to take one of the 12 right so now that's 11 left and how many of your females are gonna get bred yeah so we get one out of the 12 I mean the math just don't add up and then how many more were born then that are untouchable next year that maybe I'm not seeing or you know whatever but like when you have and this is one camera well and here's another thing too and it goes back to like the emotion versus the biology

if you want to talk about managing a herd when they talk about managing a deer herd what do they talk about doing shooting dogs yeah well if you've limited the reduction of population that's gonna have the most influence there females yeah you're not gonna do it now on the flip side of that Pennsylvania cut back on their bear seasons because they felt they were shooting too many females early and they leveled the population so they cut the season back as much as that sucks from 100's perspective I'm glad they did that well if you think about it too and this is like a round about thing here so the anti-hundreds who will sit there and say oh this is a trophy hunt for you hunters well they're kind of making it that way because they're taking that other option out of our hands so if you can't shoot a female what are we shooting we're waiting for him then yeah yeah and he's not gonna have that much of an influence because that bear right there you don't have the age on

them back yet they yeah well so this is funny they did give me the age on them they told they told them he was six years old and a guy there said look we the years ago they had one that was tugged they knew he was eight years old right from tagging him how many times all the all the data they had on him or whatever and when they pulled his tooth and sent it back they said he was five now that guy said we know he was eight because of all of our data now when I shot him that night both his years were ripped from the tags that came out of him he had a little ink on his lip from a tattoo so this guy said he has to be between ten and fourteen or there'd be better ink on him okay we probably tattooed him as a cub right so then with that day he forgot he told me that but then that day when he said oh I got the email back with age he goes six I was like see you're telling me they're saying that thing gained a hundred pounds and not only that you could probably gain the weight of your fed right but your head ain't growing like that just because you know in a

manner like that takes time my buddy Jason go that I've had on the podcast shot a bear in Pennsylvania the one year and it was I think his his bear was a four hundred some pound bear and it came back as a three year old now think about that four hundred pound bear three of the one thing I would be curious though is if he has his skull what that would look like compared to that because that I think you hit the nail on the head there is the skull size and and that bone structure but my point when I sprout up the age of this bear let's say he's ten years old ten fourteen years old took that long for somebody to shoot that bear yeah so that's ten to fourteen years that he's got an influence of people interactions yeah and if it's a population dynamic I mean let's face it we're preaching this this is we would fall in deaf ears to any anti-hunter we're preaching to the choir when we talk about a podcast it only makes sense with what we're doing from a wildlife management standpoint and the resource concerns and let's face it hunting and we already know this hunting is one of those things that who puts the most money in the dollars into conservation hunters

exactly habitat wildlife habitat and again like if you if you look if you listen to everything we've said we don't have to get another one we're gonna try to we're not we're not we got to go my my we're not talking like that we're gonna go hunt and if it's successful we'll be happy about it we're not we'll try again that's a hundred percent right and that that's the difference between like if you think about it our side of the fence to their side of the fence they're they're chin and beaten drums and nail on his grave we're just going about her business to be left alone I was thinking about shaking their trees and bitching about something there's the one exact some of the places that we've hunt to the one place that I'm thinking about going this year I'm going to check out tomorrow uh to access you're going to walk on a pretty prominent white walking trail and uh like you know a lot of downhunners use that trail and I was thinking about that too it's like man if we shoot one there

what's this that gonna entail like I was thinking about like do you take do you use a cart and just put a blanket over it or just something like that so you don't have to deal with with the potential headache because like I don't want conflict I'm gonna get in and get out and have a good time and I don't I don't need somebody to louse it up well take a detrick the other week when he was going in on the deep biking that way he says that is what was that this year yeah yeah it was just like a week before we were here that was Rod and he says oh no just here to take pictures of him yeah I could never kill one that was Rod and him yeah but I do not save him an argument you know what I mean so I guess I'm the eternal optimist the one thought I had too is it did it save an argument or did it say or or did it ruin an opportunity for a hunter to give it a non-hunter a better perspective and who knows maybe she was a wacko anti that would all go on her attitude not his it would you know what I mean but I mean I I do think there's something to

be said a lot of non-hunters and anti-hunners the reason they are that way is they don't they've either not had good experiences or they haven't had many experiences they just hate the idea of an animal dying yeah and I have met many people that were neutral were even on the negative side that in the right circumstances and learning experiences they calm down a little bit or maybe had a more fabled and that comes on us and that's that's still hard to do yeah it's still hard to do it is but you know like nothing's gonna change you're always gonna have two sides of that street I know doesn't matter but the thing is like we just like you said we try to get in we try to get out we're not trying to ruin anyone's property steal anyone's stuff you know I mean we always try to do the right thing but if want it takes one guy to do something stupid to give us all a bad name harpsum but I guess that's with anything in life one person can ruin it for everybody that's why

we have so many rules it takes one person to screw something up to make a rule for everybody so you mean to tell me I'm looking at this wall here I got a strut and goblet over here I got all these bear I got these four white tail heads hanging here and at one in the middle there that's a pretty dandy pretty much a dandy buck there you mean to tell me that that right there doesn't get you excited in zero percent you're kidding me oh my gosh that still gets me excited now now listen here I already made my mind up that's going with me till October 19th so even if I hunt next weekend like I'm taking that yeah because I'd like to get practice with it sure but there is not one ounce of me that is like I can't wait for next Saturday zero now I'll go because the season will open but I am not like anytime someone said me trail cam picture I was like that brown not black would like care in any way I guess I look at it different too if if I lived in jersey I don't think I'd be

like now I know I'm going over Sunday so I'm excited about it I'm not excited about this because if tomorrow at three o'clock she says hey I'm running my sister I could go up here do something and come back down so it's not I'm not excited because I have it okay yeah we got to sit like tomorrow you have a plan you have a timeline it's different than scouting at your house because it gives you better appreciation because you have limited time and that's why like I'm excited about that and I got to plan that we're anything here like now I wanted to hang a tree staying last night but I didn't some came up didn't hang one tonight because I had my grandson here till uh certain time but no big deal like but if that was jersey and I planned I gotta get my stand up you have to make it happen yeah we're here I could do it in an hour Sunday who knows but and that's kind of why I'm where I'm out with these now look if I'm sitting there he walks up I'll be shaking I'll be going crazy but I'm not out here running around like and also I told Mark if I go out with that and a legal

buck comes up I'm probably shooting it yeah just because you never shot a buck yeah never shot it so do I care if it's that big or that big not really yeah yeah if I get a good 10 or 12 15 yard shot stand still broadside I gotta do it thanks that's what I feel about I was referring to this Pope and young class white tail it's hanging on the walls a pretty nice book I've been I've been I slapped off on the deer hunting as much as I used to but I'm I'm pretty jacked up to go deer hunting this year I'm here some funny about that I wasn't even gonna hunt that night it's so much remind you of that oh so the biggest book he got hanging on the wall the biggest bearer I wasn't even gonna go yeah so I'm coach and soccer my son is playing soccer for middle school and I never got to watch him play because our schedules didn't coincide right so I told everyone hey look we worked hard this week we won a couple games I said Thursday night we're gonna cut practice early and I want to go watch the middle school play so I get up there watch 10 minutes of the game

it ends because varsity would play first because they don't play under the lights or anything and Nikki says are you going hunting I was like nope I was gonna come here watch the kid play she goes well he has to stay now and sit through jv and I got to take the girls to dance so if you want to go I'm out of there so now I quick run home I'm not planning on this I don't have I mean my stuff's there and ready but I don't have a plan so as I'm driving up here because I live in top and at the time so I'm driving up here I was like where am I gonna go I have two lock-ons at the time now I have a hundred of them but it's like well which one well I'm gonna take this one so I climb up in the stand at five ten I'll never forget it I text my buddy Frank who I hunted with every day I was like hey I can actually hunt tonight he goes oh where'd you decide to go I said top of bills like we name all these stands you know so he goes oh cool you get to hunt as a yep 15 minutes go by this thing steps out about a hundred yards away I was like that's a nice buck and he just walks right to me and I thought yeah it's too early in the season to shoot something like this and I let him

walk under me and I when he's under me I'm like oh my god I think I just missed judges think so now I'm panic mode because I don't have my bow my hand or nothing so here that thing weighed 208 gutted and because how big his body was I didn't think the rack was that big till he got under me so now he stands there ten yards I shoot he runs 30 yards falls over I call my buddy Frank is like hey when you're done hunt come up here I need you to help me get one out he goes get right is like do this things you mongers he's like no no no you're kidding I was like no I'm not again what did plan on it didn't know where I was going well actually let him walk and then the funny thing is the next year I go to the same stand I shoot a nine pointer that I thought was bigger than him but here that deer weighed 96 pounds and the rack was like this but on a such a small body like my quick judge was this is bigger than I one he wouldn't even close but yeah so that that deer and that bear were both shouldn't happen that's funny yeah well I can't wait to go it was be a fun

sky versus those is a fun preseason conversation and are we going to do a follow-up if we have we have to we didn't last year we were all in the all in the dumps and busy and we didn't do a follow-up the bear sees last year would have been a lot of poo poo and but I think we should do one this year maybe we'll do it at bear can I was going to say you'll be there till Sunday right because we have that's the plan that's the plan now Sunday I believe I have to get up early Sunday and leave for I like to get out like I'm the kind of guy like if I'm leaving Sunday I like to get up and go yeah so we could do one Saturday night that way the hunt is complete and we know that we have all the statistics of who's getting one and who isn't yeah but it would be neat too because you never know how many guys are hanging around that night yet you know what I mean so you might get different perspectives on I hope we have a good a good camp like because I know like what we do with Airbnb and getting a camp like we have guys rolling in and out throughout the week but it's always fun we've got the crew there to to BS in the evenings like there's a couple nights there

last year when we're sitting around you know drink a beer together shoot the bowl telling stories getting to know some of the guys better but better it was fun yeah I mean that that's half it like I got to know Aaron and his buddy Rich and you know now we're gonna meet a couple new guys this year and I mean if you think about it like how that came together was me you marked Mike and Jared and then Dietrich had asked me about staying with us and I remember Mark being like look man we can't have a hundred guys and then everyone hit one of we got to go and I said to Mike and big Rick and Johnny I said you know you guys if we get a place you still got to have your place to hunt and you know try to get it out yourself now obviously someone gets like we're all gonna go yeah sure you know but anyway and then it was you and what your buddies came here and then whatever but I thought it went well because then we could get a bigger place cheaper because of the number of guys we got like if you get a smaller place you're paying more money oh my gosh yeah it is

Xen how expensive it's it's gotten but it's worked out and it's we've got a good system we got a fun system I hope it stays fun yeah but it's been so this was fun we'll do another another one at the end of it and who knows I'm in at some point we might do some more bear hunting episode from between then leading into season and scouting and stuff like that but I just thought this would be a fun way to spend a Friday night sitting here doing a podcast looking at that thing it's something about being in your man cave your finished basement I get to do it now I got to move some mounts around so I get the full appreciation but the more I look at that I've I would love another now we'll say I've got two bear rugs downstairs and if I start putting more bear on the wall she would she would kill me well I said last after that I'm done I'll never spend another time and then you shoot this one it's like okay I got to do it so big big Rick sends that picture do you get his stuff yeah you saw the one with the blaze on the chest that's a pretty big bear but three four hundred pounder the problem and you know my first reaction I

say that great there's another twenty three hundred bucks I hope and I hope it doesn't come near me because you'd have imagine if I'd have that recurve and shoot that bear I'd have to do it what the hell what am I going to put that thing well I've thought that too like I'd gobbler I shot the my big one like I've had multiple people tell me now say like I've never seen one that big like I have my one buddy that hunt he came over and we did a podcast and he looked at it it was first time he got to see he goes you got he goes you got the crown he said I've never seen spurs on a bird like that one he said he goes he goes those are impressive and that bird was huge and I think I wanted so bad to mount it but at the time it was a money thing and I knew where to put the dollar thing now I'm a bit finished basement it's like man I think they look good but well you should have seen the decision trying to figure out not before I even had this because when flicker came to

bring it I wanted to have it ready you know what I mean so we were going to take the turkey off of that wall and put him like coming out that ain't so we my wife did some of that AI stuff like ask it and it showed you like you know she took a picture and said where would you put this and the best place was there or it would have been nice coming off an outweigh but the way he's facing you wouldn't really get to see it mm-hmm said then we went with that because this red thing in the TV was over there yeah so we moved this over here and but and I'm not done with this yet my wife's going to craft some stuff and I want some time over over there I want to take some of that kind of the swamp grass mm-hmm and just you know put it along the wall so it looks like he's coming out of the grass that would be cool yeah so if I shoot one over there early and you see me with my clippers you know what I'm doing all right well this was fun till the next one yep thanks for spending your time with us here on the Pennsylvania Woodsman if you'd like to stay
