About this episode

“If you're ready to feel confident again, visit orderlymeds.com to learn about which GLP1 you may be eligible for. Getting started as fast, easy, and happens virtually through telemedicine from licensed professionals.”From the transcript
Nick Wize closes out the analytics conversation by discussing the balance between modern baseball data and old-school instincts, including Yandy Diaz's approach to challenging balls and strikes. Nick believes the Rays should use analytics to inform their decisions without allowing the numbers to completely dictate how they play. Then Nick and Tim get sidetracked by one of Todd Bowles' funniest recent answers when asked what Yaya Diaby is dealing with—"He's got a calf."

That game or even thought about challenging it when we had an extra challenge available. Yeah, that's got to change. Well, he said he said it for the postseason, right? He said that he might challenge in the postseason, but he did not challenge it all in the regular season. He was a, and I've heard a couple people say they would never challenge it. I think Chris sale might have been another one that said he would never challenge a pitch. But that has to change in the playoffs. If Yandee Diaz believes, you know what? It's going to happen. Yandee is going to challenge one of the very first at bat. Actually, I don't think the race will challenge in the first inning. So his second at bat, that's going to be my bold prediction. Yandee challenges a pitch in his second at bat against the Yankees on Saturday night. And if it happens, everybody just think of the Nick Weiss show. If it doesn't happen, yeah, you'll never remember. I said it anyways. It's fine. But yeah, he know he's got to change that approach. He can't not challenge if a pitch is bad.

He's got to get over the whole, I don't know why some players are against it. I know they're old school, but like get it, get it right. You don't want to cost your team a game, especially now. So I think that he'll be fine. I think if something's really bad, he'll challenge it, but he's never going to challenge anything close. Yeah. That's, that's the thing that kills me in the fact to like it. If it took five minutes to figure out, then I would be flat out against it. But the fact that it's bang, bang, like you know exactly what the call is and under 30 seconds, what's the harm? And you actually get the right call. Yeah, I wish base or I wish football could challenge as fast as baseball. Oh, it'd be so nice. There's nothing worse when they challenge and football than they bring the camera or they bring the screen out into the middle of the field. It's like, at least I do like in college football. They let you hear what they're saying. But I just wish upstairs could decide what it is and then tell the people downstairs. All right, here's what it is. And let's be done with it. Let's go to P and Lakeland.

What's up, P? How you doing? I'm good man. I'm all right. I'm going to get the analytics. I would never ever forget cash for pulling shoes in that game. Never. And that most definitely also a boss in the series. I think you know, Cadd analytics is the reason why he got a job. It's the reason why he never, you know, complained about us not going out to get a bit bad or pictures in the middle of the year. And it's also kind of contributed to his success. Like one of the callers said, I don't think cash has a feel for the game just because he's you know, he's just analytics all the way around the board. He's not kind of allowed to, you know, voice is a pain on anything other than analytics. So my handkerchief. Listen guys, I appreciate it. All right. Thanks, P. I think he goes with the analytics because he is dealing with a payroll situation and the analytics do help. I want to be very clear. The conversation here, at least from my point of view, is not don't get rid of the analytics.

They are a big part of what got you here. What I'm saying is don't let it be the end all be all. There might be times where you need to ignore the analytics. That's all I'm saying. I don't think you get away with what one of the American legies and what's one of these games. Well, they got 98 wins. I just, I don't think you ignore that. I just think there are certain situations where the computer doesn't know of the situation. The magnitude, the field, the clutch is what a lot of people have brought up today. You know, those are the situations where I think you may be hold off on what the computer tells you to do. Yeah, you watch the game and see how it plays out. A lot of teams and that's, that's my biggest gripe with what happened over this wild car with the red socks is that they used analytics. They used the numbers to dictate how the game is played again. Perfect example, Paul and Peyton totally last night or the other night and then Bullen's sunny gray last night. 70 pitches in four and two thirds innings when he only gave up two runs and was pretty

dominant for the most part. If you want to talk about the stuff on his neck, fine, but it wasn't just the stuff on his neck that made him that good and he still gave up two runs anyway. Yeah, if you're just joining us and you don't know what he's talking about the stuff on his neck, there's definitely a sticky substance on the neck of sunny gray last night that wasn't there in the post game pressers. He apparently cleaned it off, but did you notice it during the game or did you not know until after? It was once the cameras started like watching it all the time and just showing him wipe the back of his neck with his two fingers. It's kind of hard not to miss. It's pretty obvious. Yeah, you just sit in there like going, all right, he's got something. But was that going to, was that going to change the outcome of that game? No, I mean, if anything, if he stayed in the game, could the Yankees have only scored two runs? Sure, but it's just, it's so dumb. Todd Bulls quote, so the audio of it's not as good. It's just so, let me try to explain these emails we get.

So we'll get emails here from the Buckingeers, right? If there's a press conference with Todd Bulls, they send out the quotes. And so you can read everything that Todd, you can, you read the question and you can read the answer from Todd Bulls. And yesterday, the question was asked about Yaya Diabi and what he is dealing with. Todd Bulls is the best quote. So the reporter said, what injury does outside linebacker Yaya Diabi, what is he dealing with? And Todd just replied, he's got a calf. That was the whole quote. He's got a calf. Well, I'm glad he's got a key muscle in his body. Yeah, thank God he's got one of those calves. Because if he didn't, he'd have no sacks. Oh, wait, he's got a calf. It's one of the best lines ever. It is good. He's got a, we've now read it to each other so many times.

The funny factor has worn off. And which sucks because we lost the natural reaction because we were talking about it off the air. It was so funny. He's got a calf. I mean, just picture Todd Bulls up there and you're like, yeah, so Yaya Diabi, he saw him on the injury report. What's going on? He's got a calf. Hey, I'm taking a third period biology with Todd Bulls. He's got a calf. He's got a calf. Oh, man, that was great. Also the WNBA, we got a minute. I got a squeeze to sit. How about that last night? Now, most people probably don't even know there was a game. I didn't either, but Asia Wilson, she's on, was the Vegas. They were playing the Indiana fever, Clay, Caitlin Clark's team. And she like ran over Sophie, cunning him. Oh, yeah. And the crowd got a little wild and this guy stands up. We really a lot of people were standing. Actually, I don't even think she was pointed at him. I think there was a guy sitting down that she was screaming at.

You know, there was a, well, the guy that she screamed at was standing. I saw the video from another angle. And essentially everybody behind the basketball hoop is pointing at her. Like, you can't do that. I mean, she was a nasty boy. It wasn't foul, which they didn't call it. It was a dirty play. And so the fans all stood up and they're pointing at her and they're yelling at her, which is what happens at a sporting event. Shocker. And she ends up leaving the court going out and confronting the guy. And basically at the press conference afterwards, she's like nobody points at me. And I just think the WNBA is, their players are so unbearable. Exactly. It's really a tough product. Like they're so unbearable. They want more money. And you know what? I wish they could get it. Unfortunately, I want more money too. They're still in the red. But when the radio station makes the same amount of money as it did last year, well, then I'm not going to get paid more money.

If your company that you work for isn't making more than it made a year ago, why do you deserve more money? To me, that's the thing about the WNBA play. Like you're getting pretty good. Yes, you're not making NBA money. You're not going to subsidize by the NBA. Correct. But you're still making a couple hundred thousand dollars a year to play a game that you love. You're making a lot more money than a guy who's listening right now that hates his job and is digging a ditch, right? Like doing what he can do to get by. You're not making NBA money, but you're playing basketball making a healthy living. And until the business makes more money, you ain't making more money. But doing things like you did last night, that league is just it's it's interesting. Like I've never seen a company shoot themselves in the foot so much. I mean, they handed you a gold mine in Caitlin Clark and you ruined it. They continue to ruin it. They keep falling. They even the rafts seem to be in on the whole thing with their bizarre calling technicals

because she just throws her hands up in the air. It drives me bun in as it's hard to watch it. Why don't watch? I saw this on TikTok and that's what brought it up today. Exactly. Tated her presser of her go and no one points their finger. If she plays at the next game, whatever, I don't know if it was a playoff game or what it was, I almost want to go to the game just so I could point at her. You know what she won't be suspended, which is the crazy part. Even though the rules say she should be suspended, she won't be. But if it was Caitlin Clark, she would be suspended for the rest of the playoffs. I just want to go to the game and point at her. I hope everyone points at her at her next game. That was the most bizarre. I've never seen that league. It's just it's a spiral downfall. It's just crushed themselves and I don't feel bad.
