BACK TO THE BRAVES: Jorge Soler MIGHT BE Atlanta's ANSWER to Losing Profar | Would Angels TRADE Him?

1:05Thanks for being here for this episode of locked on angels where it's your team every day. You've got the Frish Brothers here with you aka the Super Halo Bros. My name is John and that's my brother Mike and my name is Mike and that's my brother John. Mike and I talk angels baseball with you Monday through Friday every single week day. We're entering our fifth season as a host of locked on angels and we hope that you leave here a more informed angels fan a better angels fan and a smarter angels fan after today's conversation on the show and will be pipeline released their top 30 angels prospects on Wednesday. What's it look like and who made the biggest jumps and did somebody fall off the top 30. We've got the takeaways from the angels versus team Italy. Mike don't do any dumb accents please as we talk about team Italy. The first good Atlanta come calling about their world series MVP or hasty layer. Let's talk about it. Yeah, let's talk about how we got here first. The second year in a row, John, Jackson Profare was suspended for PED use. John last year he missed 80 games and wouldn't qualify if the Braves made the post season.

2:09And then this year he got suspended again again. He's going to miss the entire season and that leaves the Braves without a big power bat that they were counting on. So I love this. Our friend Lindsay Crosby of the locked on Braves postcast and Braves today, he had a really interesting idea, didn't he? Yeah, he said could the Braves trade for Jorge Selaire to make up for their loss of of pro far. So Lindsay wrote a really great article and listed his reasons for the Braves acquiring Selaire. He said Selaire is an on base focus power bat. The Braves are comfortable with him in the clubhouse. Obviously Selaire is comfortable there as well. He has a 115 WRC plus over the last three seasons, making him 15% better than league average over that time. But more importantly, Mike, he's had a 152 WRC plus against lefties. Over those same three years, he DH most of the time and get an occasional

3:09outfield start. Lindsay said he could just stand in the outfield as he does when he's out there and he said he's better than the Braves internal options. Well, now Lindsay convinced me to keep Selaire with all these great stats that he listed right here. Now, why would the angels want to trade him? Mike, well, shedding payroll, I think, is going to be at the top of the list. He's owed $13 million in his final year of his contract, right? Through the lens of the team in order to marino, not the decision we would make, but what the team would do as we try to point to most of the time on the show. Yeah. Also, if they do trade him, it would open up the DH spot. Mike Trout could utilize that more often right now. They're not sure how often, well, when he'll be in that spot because Jorge Selaire will probably be the guy if he's on this team and be the regular DH. And it gives the angels a chance to use their abundance of outfielders. They've got a lot of guys on the Major League roster. They have a lot of guys they signed to minor league deals. And they could utilize them in 2026 and have a rotating outfield and not have

4:11somebody really stuck in one spot outside of maybe like Joe Adele in right field for the most part. And Mike Trout in center field for the most part. But then you could have people rotating in and out when it comes to left field. And maybe when Joe Adele gets a day off, you could have somebody in right field. And again, it opens up that DH spot. And you could have Joe Adele's bat in the lineup, but not in the outfield. And same thing with Mike Trout and other hitters. Yeah, exactly. You could even have Logan Hoppy DH and Darno Catch. It gives you some more options there. Now Lindsay says, call up your frequent trade partner, Perry Manassian, who's made 11 deals with the braves since 2021. That's not a tight level. I thought it was 111. It feels like it, right? Braves could send over a pitching prospect who's too low in the pecking order for the braves. Like not anybody who's going to make an immediate impact because they have some pitching depth. But ready now enough for the angels. Lindsay has a couple of suggestions on who the angels could get. He said right handed pitcher Ian Mejia or right handed pitcher Brett Sears plus

5:17right handed pitcher Adam Mayer. So it's an either or and a plus here. So let's talk about the two guys that would be the first in the trade. Ian Mejia is 26 years old. He had a 2.62 ERA in AA last year. Just four innings and one start in AAA last year. It didn't go great. Mikey throws a curveball, a sinker, a foreseam, a slider, a change up, and a cutter. Then there's Brett Sears who turns 26 in May. He was taken into the 2024 draft in the seventh round. He's from the University of Nebraska pitched at every level last year. But mostly AA to a 3.63 ERA. He's got a foreseam, a slider, a change up, a curve, and a cutter. And then there's Adam Mayer who just turned 24. So he'd be the plus. It'd be either Mejia or Sears plus Mayer drafted in 2022. Also a seventh round pick out of the University of Oregon.

6:17He pitched mostly in high A last year with a 5.76 ERA. Change up, slider, curve, and cutter. So those are the names that Lindsey says could get this deal done. But now the question is, is now the time to trade Jorge Soler? He's having this hot spring. We've got the outfield situation figured out. And he just hit his first spring training home run yesterday. And he's had a couple of doubles. He's taken some walks. Usually when we talk about who struck out among the regulars, he's not included in that. So Mike is now the time to trade him, what do you say? I don't know, John. I think I'm going to lean in the no direction. And here's why. Because the angels need offense. And if they're going to be anywhere competitive this year, whatever that definition might mean to the angels, they're going to need some offense. And I think Jorge Soler, if he's healthy and he is having a good spring, and he can DH all the time, I think a lot of the boxes are checked for the angels. And Jorge Soler to be in this lineup.

7:17I know it gives him some flexibility. And I know that there are some other players that could fill some of those roles. But John, Jorge Soler is just a glimpse of what he's been in his career with the angels this year. Then I think that he could be a great asset for them. And then perhaps you wait until the all-star break and trade him away, the trade deadline, right? I do think when I look at the names that Lindsay suggested, I would push back on Lindsay. Now he's the expert and I am not. But I would push back because I'm the expert on the angels and he is not. And I see three arms. And I don't think the angels need arms, John. I think that when you look and we're going to talk about their top 30, the angels have really been applauded for all the pictures they have in the minor leagues right now in their top 30. What they don't have is bats. They don't have a strong third baseman. And Odin Zerguzman is listed in the top 30. But John, he's kind of a shortstop, maybe more second base than third base. I know he can play in all three positions. But they don't really don't have anybody that is a zacknetotype with a bat.

8:19They don't really have a mic trout type. They have guys that are like, well, they might be good, but they don't have anybody that brings a solid like, yeah, that's going to be the future third baseman, future second baseman, future left fielder. And I know that you're not going to get that with Jorge Soler. But I would say instead of two arms, kind of good arm and maybe a mediocre arm, I would take a kind of good arm and then maybe a bat or kind of good bat and a mediocre arm. What about you? Yeah, I think I'm with you on that. Because as we'll see, as we look at the top prospects, yeah, the angels have really built themselves something great in terms of pitching. The angels might have pitching. Are you kidding me? Yeah. And, you know, like you said, Lindsay's the expert on the braves. Oh man, they had so many pitching injuries last year. And a lot of them key guys going down, like Spencer Swollenbach and a ton of guys that just got hurt. And so you wonder, yes, they might have pitching death, but you wonder, when do they turn to these guys?

9:20So I think I'm with you, Mike. I'd rather acquire some offense at this point. Because if you're going to trade Jorge Soler, you're going to have to make that up somehow, not that this prospect would immediately make an impact. Sure. But we've already talked about how, you know, missing Taylor Ward is significant, but also the angels didn't really maximize Taylor Ward's home runs. I think I said, what was it? 22 of his 30-something home runs were solo home runs. I never really make a big impact. It wasn't Taylor's fault. There was nobody on base for him. Yeah. At the same time, I look at what Jorge Soler has done. And Lindsay's right, he can walk. In fact, he can walk. He had one of the better walk rates among the angels last year. And sometimes in his career, he's even had double-digit walk rates. So I think that's significant as well. I do want to throw this at you. None of those three arms that Lindsay mentioned are on the brave 40-man roster.

10:20Yeah. Jorge Soler is on the 40-man roster. So the angels wouldn't have to give them a spot on their 40-man. Could that open up a spot for somebody who's also having a good spring? We'll talk about it in a little bit. Like Jamer Candelario, who might bring some of what Jorge Soler brings to the table? What do you think? John, with Jamer Candelario, you have somebody who has just not been good. And then he's having a good spring. And if you had bats that he's had, it would be a very angel-like move to have Candelario be the guy that fills in the spot. But again, if they're going to be a team that's going to try to do something. And I know there's a lot of questions. Is it Miguel Sino for 2026? Is that how it feels? That's what it feels like to me. I don't know if that would be a good move or not. It does feel like he's healthy. It does feel like the spinal cord issues are resolved in that he's feeling really good. He's cheap for the angels. He's really on a minor league deal. I think it's what it is. Or is it a major league deal at the minimum? It's a minor league deal.

11:22And then the risk you run with a lot of the minor league deals that they signed is when you have so much experience and service time, you have the ability to opt out at certain points with the angels. So they could even opt out. I believe after spring is over, it comes down to that decision. Otherwise, they stay in like triple A, right? I think if Solera goes, I know that he's already on the roster, but I think that opens up an opportunity for Bryce Tiodosio. Because then you could have Mike Trout DH and then you could have Tiodosio in center field. And then when Mike Trout is in center field, John, you could potentially have Tiodosio in left field. I mean, you could put him out there and let him bat ninth and he's working on bunting. And I think it opens up an interesting opportunity for the defense with Bryce Tiodosio out there. And with this pitching staff, they're going to need good infield defense, but they're also going to need good outfield defense. Cacucci is a flyball guy and Depmers is a flyball guy. And so I think they're going to need some of that even Grace and Rodriguez is a flyball guy. So to have somebody out there that you know

12:23is going to go after every baseball that's hit, I think is a comforting feeling. So my thought is as they would probably move in that direction, but it does feel like a very angels move to put Candelario on the roster if or hasty layers trade the one thing I'll say too is with Josh Lowe and the oblique issue. I know it was one side that's been hurting him for the last two years. And now it's a different side. I don't trust obliques any further than you can throw your oblique. Mike, because we've seen the effects of that. We especially saw it. I think it was 2024 everybody had an oblique issue and they're not easy to deal with. And so if if Lowe is not able to play to his capacity or even start the season with the angels, now he's confident that he can. You're going to want Salar at D.H. and then Tato, CEO and center and maybe trout in left. You're going to want somebody maybe like Adam Frazier taking an outfield spot. And so you're I think you're going to need Salar to stick around at least to begin the season. Thanks for making a lock down angels

Yeah, no kidding. Four to three. And it was thanks in part two, jammer Candolario. So our first takeaway from this game and maybe just the spring. Candolario looks good out there, Mike. What do you say? Yeah, I mean, a lot of his good has been against not so good competition.

17:31It really has been like major league caliber. But I know that he needs to get a swing path together and he needs to get his reps and all of those things. I just am not sold on Candolario being somebody that should be on this roster. I think he's perfect for spring training. I think if he continues to have a great spring training, then it does bring up an interesting tension for the angels, John, because he is a switch hitter. He can play first base. He can play third base. And he can be a D H sort of third base. Yeah, well, I mean, that's the truth is we have sort of third basements with both of the guys that we have playing over there. And so young mancada is going to be the guy that will start but to have somebody back him up but also have somebody to back up Nolan Shaunawell at first base. And then if they bring in a left-handed pitcher, he just switches to the other side. If he's playing for Shaunawell. So there are advantages to having Candolario on the roster. I'm just not yet sold on him being the guy that they should have on the roster, especially right now.

18:33Okay, let me throw this at you. What if God forbid there's a Josh Lowe, right? Injured, he has to go on the 60 day IL. Is Candolario somebody that you bring on to the Major League roster in that situation because he is a switch hitter because he can back up at first, because he could D H. And I go back to if the angels ended up doing the slayer trade, not that I'm saying I would want to, is he a good candidate to basically what I'm saying is, is he a good candidate to take a spot if there is a spot to be taken? I think I would wrestle between him and Adam Frazier. I think Adam Frazier would be somebody that I might lean more in his direction. Are you doing that to spite me? Because what I've been saying, I'm glad you read my mind. Yes, I'm doing exactly. I'm doing it out of spite. That's why I'm returning this shirt. The truth is, I think I would wrestle between those two. I get the benefits of Candolario.

19:34I do think Adam Frazier helps this team better in a more significant way. I think if I'm going to put him on a list of one through five, I think that Frazier is probably like three and a half and Candolario is probably like 2.9 on my one through five list. Actually, mark that down. Get out your Mr. Rogers neighborhood sticky notes that I have here and write down that we should do our top five guys that are in spring right now who don't have a roster spot aren't on the 40 man and just kind of rank like that depth and just see who's there. 20:35and it's gone very well for him. He went one from one yesterday with a hit by pitch in the first at bat, took a walk and then had a home run, his first home run of the spring. But I do want to point out the walk that he took was an eight-pitch at bat against Adam out of e-mail. So it wasn't some rookie or some prospect. It was a major league reliever and he didn't go chasing. And if you go look at the spray chart of the zone, there was a lot of stuff away from Selaire and he didn't go chasing it and he ends up getting that home run. 99.2 miles per hour off the bat and it wasn't like a far home run, but it was like a Jorge Selaire. Yes, he got along with that one home run. So we discussed it earlier. Selaire is looking good this season. I'm sorry, the spring, but can we trust him for the season? What is key to him carrying over this spring stuff

21:40into the regular season? I think it's gotta be his health, John. I think that's really what it boils down to for him. It's gotta be his health because when he's healthy, I think he's a 232.40 hitter. I think he's got a 310-320 on base and I think he's got 25 home runs in him. And man, if he puts those types of numbers up, then that helps kind of fill the gap with Taylor Ward not being here. And I think Mike Trout will have a better year. I think Logan O'Hoppy will have a better year. I think that at this point, I'm leaning towards trusting him, but I would also love to see maybe another week's worth of it bats. Logan O'Hoppy, I don't know if you saw him swinging and missing it. Brian Lewis, excellent sweeper the other day. No, I'm just bringing Twitter drama into our conversation. You are. Yeah, let's talk about the pitching mic. Mitch Ferris got the start in this one. It's actually his third outing of spring, but he got to start. Three innings pitched, five hits, two run runs on a two run homer, one strike out, zero walks on 43 pitches. That seems like a Mitch Ferris start.

22:41What about you? Yeah. And he's a former brave. So if we do trade Jorge Soler and get some pitchers, this is probably what we'll get. We'll probably get like a Mitch Ferris type of pitcher, which is not going to not going to show off, but not going to lag behind, right? I will say, now the data is not very significant, but they're just like there's baseball so much, there's prospect so much. And because triple A stadiums have stat cast, there is information out there, but all the guys that Lindsey suggested, one of them didn't even throw four scene, kind of relied on, I think the cutter as his main fastball. None of these guys were touching high 90s in their starts in triple A. It was kind of low 90s, so I don't know how that was a radar gun problem. I don't know if that was a triple A problem, but just from the data that's out there, none of those guys were throwing very hard, and that feels a lot like Mitch Ferris. Who by the way was throwing harder in this one? He was sitting about 92, 93 on his fastball, which is up from where he was a year ago, around 90, 91,

23:44so there has been an improvement there. Let's talk about the bull pin, Mike. Could we have in this one? Yeah, Kirby eights and Jordan Romano, each pitch to score this inning. Romano through eight of his 11 pitches for strikes. John, he's had some really good quick outings so far this spring. Hunter Strickland was in this game, did not allow a run in his one inning of work. Drew Pomeran's gave up a run on two hits, and his one inning of work with two strikeouts. Javie and Sandridge, he had two strikeouts in the eighth, and then Sam Bachman pitched a scoreless ninth, and the Angels did come from behind and win this game. Yeah, so Javie and Sandridge with a much better game this time around, which is great to see. Oh, I didn't mention that. Did I mention Candolario's home run? Or no, the sack fly to win the game was off. Caminochi, Angels pitcher. Caminochi. Oh, that's funny. Yeah, that's he's pitching for team Italy. Yeah. As it's Sam Aldigeri, but he didn't get into this one. Let's talk about, as we always do, Mike,

24:45the strikeout report. Yeah, sad that we have to have a strikeout report, but it's a necessary evil. There were eight strikeouts in this one, but the regulars, and then like fringe, probably bench guys who had strikeouts. Neto had a strikeout, and then Grissom Parasa and Darno each had a strikeout. And of course, I'd say Grissom Parasa and Darno were going to be three-fourths of your bench coming into 2026. So really, it was just Zach Neto, who had the strikeout in terms of guys who were going to be in there every day. But single digit strikeouts, in my opinion, are always a win with this team. I don't care if it's the regulars, or if it's the depth, or if it's non-roster invitees. Anytime the angels can put up single digit strikeouts, after what we saw last year, is a win in my book. Shhh. Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline had a really nice write-up of the angels prospects. He writes, a total of 19 of the angels new top 30 list

27:50are pictures. We talked about that in the first segment. And they come with a ton of arm strength and the usual risk associated with those kinds of arms. Over the past few years, the angels have liked going after high-end high school hurlers, later in the draft, moving their bonus pool around them to bring them into the fold. Mayo said that we all know how young pitching can go. Though the angels are hopeful, the addition of Jared Hughes, as their new pitching coordinator will help maximize the returns on the risky investments, if things start clicking for the names on the list, we could see this system jump in their rankings from the bottom of the list to maybe higher, maybe top 10. That would be a miracle, wouldn't it, John? It would be a miracle, especially if what's his name over at the athletic move the angels up out of the top 30. He hasn't like 35th, even though there's only 32. It's a Keith Law. Yeah, Keith Law. It would be like baseball America, MLB pipeline,

28:52they'd be like, man, look at all these pictures, the angels having Keith Law would be like 40th. Yeah, they have Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, and then they have Mark Langston, and then they have Chuck Finley, and you know what? They're 31st. Yeah, exactly. There's only 31 teams. Yeah. So rounding out the top five for the angels, according to MLB pipeline, number one is Tyler Bremner. Number two is Ryan Johnson. Mike Nelson Rada is number three, Johnny Slowinsky, baseball name right there. Yes. Number four and George Klassen is number five. The biggest jump was Rowdy Rodriguez. He wasn't ranked last year, but because of his great season and getting that MVP this past fall, he's number 16 in the angels top 30. By the way, did you know his first name is Eric? Eric, the clown? Eric, the clown? No. His name is that for a clown.

29:52No insult to the Eric's out there, but Rowdy is a way cooler name. So it's Eric Rowdy Rodriguez. I can't wait till he's on the Major League roster and I get to tweak those Rowdy, Rowdy, Piper Gifts every time he does something great. He needs to stick with Rowdy. The biggest fall was catcher Daria Lavarde. He fell from 12 last year. Now he's unranked this year. They say it's because his bat just stopped working. John, he is a bat first catcher and his bat literally stopped working. And so he fell off the top 30 list. Now they gave out the best tools in the system. Remember prospects are graded on a 20 to 80 scale, 20 to 30s like below average, well below average, 40s below average, 50s average, 60 is plus, and 70 to 80 is well above average. They do that because you can kind of tick in both directions by 10 with 50 being there right in the middle. So these guys are the tops in terms of

30:57their particular grade and tools that they have to offer. The best hit tool in the minor league system is Nelson Rada with a 55, but also Hayden Alvarez. Funny enough, he was part of my Jorge Saler trade to the pirates in order to get Mitch Keller. That didn't happen. The power tool belongs to Gabrielle, Dava Lilo, but also Josue Lugo and Raudi Rodriguez at a 55. Nelson Rada has the best run tool at 60, but also Hayden Alvarez and Jason Horton, the best arm 65. That's pretty good. It is Marlene Cintero. The best defense with a 60 grade is Nelson Rada, but also Marlene Cintero. Mike, the best fastball in the system is a 70 grade. And there's three guys that have a 70 grade fastball. Arbadi Chris Cortez, George Klassen, and Walbert Urania. Sounds right. The curve ball is a 60 that belongs to Talon Haley. Ryan Johnson has the best slider at 60,

31:58but also Chris Cortez does as well. The best change up, a 65 grade change up is Tyler Bremner. And the best control is Ryan Johnson with a score of 65. I love this note from John of the mile. How this was built? Top 30 prospects. 15 from the draft. 13 are international free agents, and two of them are through the trade. So again, Mayo says, if the arms click, we'll see the angels prospect rankings climb. Do the angels finally have some pitching, my brother? Can we say that out loud? Yes, the answers yes. They have pitching now, and they have pitching for the future, John. And so it looks exciting for the future. Obviously development is going to be a key issue for the angels, and that's always been a big question for the angels. But these names are attractive names, and they're players that are probably going to be in the major leagues in the next couple of years with guys like Urania, and George Klassen and Sam Elton Geary, and Hayden Dana. That could be the starting rotation in 2027, 2028.

33:02And Tarek Schooble, of course. And Tarek Schooble, when we get a new owner, yeah, exactly. On the MLB, the show game, right? Yeah. I'm going to draft a super team on my show franchise just to make myself feel better. Mike, here's the thing. It'd be great if the angels climbed the rankings. But you and I have always said, who cares? Yeah. When it comes to farms and some rankings? Yeah. Because as angel fans, we know who we like. We know who's good. And there's some obvious truth to the fact that maybe not everybody altogether makes for a great farm system. But dang, it would feel really good if they weren't bottom of the barrel like they have been. Because you know what's most frustrating about it? It's just one more talking point. Yeah. When people find out you're an angel's fan, and if they're a ball-nower, they'll go, well, isn't your farm system dead last or 28? There's something like that. So to erase that talking point would be a godsend, in my opinion,

34:04yeah, and then just don't let Keith Law anywhere near a pen and paper to write about this team because he has a difficult time giving them any sort of compliment. I like what I see on paper with these pictures, specifically. And we're not the first ones to say that that's where the angels are winning. They're winning in their minor league pitching development. And those names tell us there's a lot of good guys that are coming up. There's still some guys that are going to need development. But I would say that we're really going to start to see and feel their impact in 28, in a 29, and even in 2030. You have to measure which guys are going to make the biggest impact for you, especially in the starting rotation. Because like you said, it'd be great to have a really great starting rotation of young arms by the time it's 27, 28, 29. Mike, I think what you have to do, and this is something I feel like we discussed years ago, you got to trade from that pitching depth, honestly. And if it costs you a Ryan Johnson or a Chris Cortez or a Walbert Urania to bring in some significant bats, because again, it's pitching heavy.

35:08So trade from that value, trade from that surplus. I know that some guys are better than others, some are further along than others. But at this point, I think it's significant for the angels to look around at their offense and their position depth and ask themselves, where can we go from here?
