This is episode four, five, eight. My name is Brad Rowland and I'm joined on a Tuesday afternoon by Scott Coleman. Scott Austin Riley.
Question mark, how are you my friend? Hello Brad. I believe it is Austin Riley exclamation point after I mean, what a game. What a moment for Austin Riley a player who I mean, he was open about it in his post game interview. Like, yeah, I've had a rough year. I've had a rough go of it and the biggest swing of the game, the biggest swing of probably the season so far. I mean, just an incredible moment for Austin Riley, three run homer, sure as part going nuts, often 99 mile an hour fastball against one of the very best closers in the game. Just euphoria and just I mean, so much to get into. So much to get into if you are new to the podcast. Welcome aboard. We'll have some fun on this one and let's waste no time. Scott, let's mix it up, engineer by our friends at fast and all. All right, on these post game playoff additions dating back a decade, we tend to go deep and we're going to do that.
What's been some time on this Austin Row, I mean, it's a lead story. It's the it might be the biggest thing that happens today. So there's four baseball games across baseball. You had a game winning through at home or it becomes probably the biggest story in baseball today. And look, you alluded to it, but he had a he had a brutal season and everyone knows that we talked about it. Plenty on this podcast, he the contract, all these things and it doesn't take all that stuff away. But it's like the way of the world on Austin Riley shoulders, like you can feel it kind of slipping off there. I mean, the celebration would have been massive, no matter what happened or who hit that home run. But the bullpen goes crazy. The bench goes crazy. The cl- everybody goes nuts. The crowd as I know it's early of the day. What crazy by the end? And I mean, look, it swings the season maybe nothing's over. We'll talk about that later on. But you go from you're staring down a one nothing hole at a best of three series. In what your ace is already pitched to, oh, now you're in control of a series. And it happened with one single swing. You know, today's game really felt like a lot of the playoff games, the Braves have played since that world series run.
Where you just kind of had this this pending sense of doom. And when JT Real Mudo line that ball down the right field line, I think everyone was like, oh my god, it's going to happen again. They get the lead. Chris sale was spectacular. It's like, okay, they're finally they're going to get ahead in this best of three. All we talked about on our two preview shows was how important today's baseball game was. They had to win behind Chris sale. Chris sale did his job. And then Real Mudo hits that ball. And it's like, oh, dear Lord, here we go. The Phillies had one of the best closures in the game out in the seventh and eighth innings. And you know, earlier in the game, we talked about, you know, Riley had that very unfortunate ball early in the game. Hit the knob of his bat. I mean, if that ball is a couple inches, one where the other, it's either a wild pitch or it hits him on the hand. And then he has that brutal ground out a few innings prior when they had a chance to extend the lead to three to one at the time. And Austin Riley comes up and it's, oh boy, here we go. And what does he do? It was a 99.9 mile per hour fastball.
It was middle, middle. He got the barrel on it and he just got it over that right field wall. I mean, again, what so happy for Austin, the guy he's had an awful year. But if you talk to people around the team, everybody loves Austin. He puts in the work. This is not a guy who just phones it in and doesn't try and doesn't get extra work in in the cage. Just so happy for him. And I mean, one of the great all-time postseason moments for the Atlanta Braves. For sure. And you said it like there's never an idea that he doesn't care or whatever. I know the contract. It's talking point and look, I'm not a narrative guy. People that listen to us for a long time will know that. It's not my operating mindset. You can't help but be romantic about this though. You know what I mean? Like, you mentioned the end game, the two spots in the game, in this game where he came up short in big moments. I tweeted about it. Like people, you know, it's like, hey, he would have been one of the goats of the day. They lost the game. One of them, not the only one, but one of them. And they throw in the full season. The last two seasons really, two and a half seasons. And like, okay, it doesn't go all the way, but like that guy being up in that spot
and homering off the Philly's best reliever. And look, Durand, we're not trying to overstate it here. Durand was one of the three best relief pitchers in all of baseball this season. It's not the bottom of the preview. I know Stephen and Sean did as well. He allowed two home runs this season in 61 appearances. Two home runs. Today was the third one. Like he had a 1.42 fit for the season. The idea that Riley was going to home her in that spot. It didn't even cross my mind. Maybe I wasn't trying to be a doomer. Like I really did try to get in the mindset of like, you know, all this is a good spot for Austin. It's going to be heat. Maybe he can catch up to it or whatever. And look, if that ball is two feet shorter, it may be hits the top of the wall. And they probably win the game anyway. But isn't it so much more poetic and romantic about baseball situation than it goes over the wall and you get the whole trot and the whole eruption. And he gets to be like the unquestioned hero of the day. It is cool. And if he strikes out tomorrow, we'll probably get bad at him again. But for now, for today, cheers to Austin Riley up in the up in the aisle. I would imagine such a great moment.
And you know, the the Braves Twitter account. And I think Instagram as well posted just the pure raw crowd pop of Riley's home run. And it's so cool. I mean, it was just that's what these games are about. For that one swing, that one moment. So good for Austin. And you know, I want to say, when you look at this lineup today, obviously Austin had the big hit. And you're Stremsky had Norby I single earlier. But you know, really the only offense today was two people. It was Michael Harris. And it was Ozzy Alvis. And I think Mike and Ozzy deserve a ton of credit for getting on base in front of Riley just to give him a chance to win the game in field single from Mike. He was busting it then line. And then a really good adat from Ozzy to draw a walk and kind of wear out Doran who had been there for I think it was the think you throw 27 pitches to that point. And it had been used pretty heavily. So yeah, just credit to those three kind of the top of the order did basically nothing today. It really was the 5, 6, 7 and the order.
And sometimes to win playoff games, to win playoff series, you need players who maybe did not have great years the way that Ozzy and Austin have not had great years to step up in a big moment. Boy, they delivered there in the eighth inning. They sure did. I mean, they scored five runs. It didn't feel like it was going to be five runs for a long time. But to do that with the top three, your big three going to combine, I believe, 0 for 11 in the game. Like that's that's not a small factor. And a little bit of synergy before we move on a little bit here. The last time the Braves won a playoff game was October 9, 2023. So almost three years ago. Austin Riley hit the game winning home run in that game as well. Off Jeff Hoffman. So hopefully it's not three years between playoff wins again. But that's pretty cool too. Obviously that was a different a different shade of Austin Riley who was more like, hey, he's a star. Like it was certainly less surprising result than this one. But that that was kind of cool too to kind of close the book on this particular game. It's like, hey, the last time I did this, Riley was responsible for it.
And hopefully they can spin this ahead. And we'll talk about everything else from this game. But we had to leave the first 10 minutes or so with just like, hey, Austin Riley, man. Hat tips to you. We'll have plenty more hat tips along the way. But boy, a fun one. You and I exchanged some some pretty dark text messages before that about everything that was going on. I joked on Twitter like 10 minutes before we before the game ended. I thought it was going to be a pretty somber episode of the podcast. And in one swing, man, it's that's the thing about baseball as sick as as much as I don't like expanded playoffs. It is pretty pretty crazy to have that kind of swing on September 29th at two o'clock. In the afternoon. Oh, yeah. Here we are talking about talking about a win. Yes. It did not feel that way even 30, 40 minutes ago as we are recording right now. And yeah, just so much fun. A well-pitched game from Salmon and Luzardo. We're going to get into all of that here in a minute. But yeah, just real for Austin, hopefully, you know, the boys, they celebrate it tonight. You enjoy this really great win. But then look, you got to get right back after it on for game two. I mean, it's a it's a best of three.
You have a chance now to win the series in two games, which would be huge. So you can plan out your the NLDS against the Dodgers. I don't want to put the carpet for the horse, but winning today, I mean, it's not hyperbole to say Austin Riley probably saved the Atlanta brave season with that swing in the eighth inning today. Sure, if they lost today, they could have they could have one games two and three. But man, I mean, this this podcast would have been a dark place if Austin doesn't hit that ball over the fence. In fact, let's not even ever tell that anymore. It happened. They won the game and we'll leave that that idea of a podcast in the past. All right, Scott, let's move on. I'm Fox Sports reporter, Jenny Taft. And on our new podcast, whatever it takes, we're talking motherhood, marriages, careers, and figuring out how to balance it all. And we'll discuss the game that brought us together, because nothing is off limits. Do you remember your initial reaction when Fox called you to be a part of the World Cup? I was like, no, I don't want to do it. You said no. I played with players that didn't. I don't think that they really truly loved the game. I found the love with the ball at my fight. But in my head, it was the long game. It was like, I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox. I'm going to go get some reps. And I'm going to learn it and love it and embrace it. He said, this group of people will never be in the same room as part of the same team ever again in your life. And it is your job to make sure that you enjoy the moment, you're proud of what you accomplish together. Scott, there is plenty of discuss about game one. And we will dive in, ending by ending, fought by fought decision by decision to the game in a second. But first, say a quick look at the current wildcard series market on CalShi. With the win, the Braves are now trading at 70% to win the Best of Three series, leading one nothing. You got into it a second ago. But let's just say the percentage has changed quite a bit in the last half hour as we're recording this podcast, one swing. But as you also said, it's not over. The Braves are now in control, but it's not over. At 70% odds though, it's one of my dollar trade at CalShi. It pays out about $35. If you're right and the Braves advance to face the Dodgers. And if you're interested in trying out CalShi, you can use code baseball, that's code baseball. And you have $55. $55 added to your account instantly. One more time. Check out CalShi, use code baseball. I got $35 added to your account instantly with CalShi.
I mean, so much to talk about. I mean, I don't know where you want to go next. Everywhere. I want to cover everything in five minutes. I know. I was just so excited. I'm like, all right, Braves, we got to keep going. Should we talk about Chris Sale? I mean, he... Yeah, I don't know. I think he's a hero of the game. Even though he would have been the losing pitcher if that happened, which is kind of crazy. I think he did what he is supposed to do. Chris Sale, we'll go through it in more detail, but his final line, six endings, four hits, nine strikeouts, only one walk, was charged with three runs. As we get to later, like, that doesn't why he's performing his performance justice. The last two were rightly charged to him, but that's not, I mean, in my mind, that wasn't really on him all that much. And look, I don't know if he was going to let the game. He did what he was supposed to do in this spot as your ace. And I don't know about you. He didn't have his best today. I didn't think so. He had his velocity, but his command was not where it's been at his absolute peak this year.
And he's still in a playoff game without gutted through six plus. And it was fantastic for the most part. Yeah, especially early on. You know, Chris did not have great command. I thought in the first inning, he was all over the place. And thankfully, until I mean, Alex Bome hitting that ball that was a foot above the strike zone to the center field wall was just maddening because that's not a ball that typically gets hit with any kind of authority. I think Jason Stark, the great Jason Stark had a note that that was just the second time all year that Chris sale had allowed a fastball up and out of the strike zone to be put in play for a hit. The other time was Bobby Whit Jr. on opening day. Of course, great synergy opening day. First game of the playoffs. Just just the most. If I would, Junior is like a top five player on the planet. So like, and that was a single. So the odds of that being a double, I guess, had tip to Alex, but a little bit of wrote down tip, tip your cat to Alex Bome because it's like, he and he always has annoyed me. And that was, but that was a great swing.
I mean, I'm sure Chris would be maddened himself for something he did there. But like, if you throw a pitch at a guy's, I don't know, shoulders and he hits one 99 miles an hour and he hits it at 400 feet. Like, what are you going to do? You just kind of, yeah. All right, that happened. Yeah, but after that first inning, Chris really locked in and he was low. That slider today was disgusting. I mean, that Philly Titter's note was coming. Kind of like everybody on the brave's knew the sweeper was coming from Lizarro and nobody could touch it. So it was really cooking. Really didn't run into much danger up until the seventh inning when he kind of ran out of gas. I even think Joey Vato in the dugout noted sail looked like he had kind of run out of of gas there in the seventh. But man, just credit to sail after three really good seasons with the braves. We finally got to see him healthy and firing in a playoff game. And he did his job today to keep it at least close enough to give the braves a chance. Hey, kid asked for, you can't reasonably ask for much more than what Chris sale did today like that. I saw some people, I know his frustration. People were like complaining about sales.
Guys, he was really good. He wasn't his absolute A plus, but can't ask for much more. Look, offensively, we'll dig into it. I think until the rally home run, the theme was probably like they were a little bit a little bit too free-willing, free-swinging in this game. Not a lot of patience, which has been a theme. I could almost hear our colleagues Steven Tober, like through the computer screen, just losing his mind about the lack of patience. Going on at the plate throughout the game, letting, you know, Lazardo, I'll make this joke one time. And I think Walt saw through this as well. The fill is announcing him as an opener. Was deeply funny, because he just threw it. He just was a starter today. He thought it was a full starter workload. Which I guess it didn't surprise the braves, because Walt seemed to think I was going to happen too, but that was kind of, and look, by the way, I have no issue with that for Maddenly. He doesn't have to tell you anything. It's fine. I just thought it was funny. It was like a very normal opener today. A top-to-pitcher in baseball at full strength. Basically for five plus settings.
But anyway, was that your, I mean, again, I told the Riley Homeworld, was that your takeaway? Because it was for me. It was like, man, this is just just lack of patience, lack of approach throughout the day. The braves were hyper aggressive today. And I mean, not just today. All season long, they've been pretty poor. Getting on base, they won the lowest on base percentages as a team in the league. And yeah, I mean, they were just swinging at everything. And I get it. Lazardo's sweeper that he throws is like one of the best pitches in all of baseball. But even against the bullpenet, they were hyper aggressive, swinging at everything. I joked, like half-joked in the sixth or seventh inning. I was decently convinced the braves could just walk every single time if they just stood up there and never swung the bat. Because they were just insistent on everything. Simulie first pitch, they were swinging at it. Whether it was a strike or a ball. I know it's this team. I know it's kind of the strategy. This team is employed for a large part of the season. But yeah, I was beside myself in the middle innings. They were seemingly swinging within everything that's three feet of the plate
that was getting swung at. Yeah, it was frustrating. Okay, let's go almost chronologically here. I want to ask about the second inning. So we touched on the sale giving up the first inning run. What are you going to do? The braves get to leave a lead up double from Maurice Dutabon in the second inning. Nice retaliation there. Okay, Michael Harris-Bunted's got in the second inning. Our old colleague Carlos Colazo, I had to retweet him. He was basically like, I hate Bunting. And I had the same thought. I don't want to leave the witness. Were you as mad about that as I was? I absolutely hated it. I don't. I am anti-bunt, fun story years ago when we were thinking about coming up with the name for this podcast. We played around with the idea of like never Bunt and Atlanta Braves podcast. And that was on the agenda. Yeah, we're right after the season. I think they went the entire year without Bunting once or maybe they had like one Bunt the entire year. So I don't like Bunting, but against such a good lefty.
I didn't hate the Bunt as much as maybe some others did. You were down one nothing early. You get the lead off double. You really do want to try to tie it up and make things square there. It was a well-executed Bunt from Mike. If he pops that up and gets an out in and Dubon doesn't advance then it looks even worse. But yeah, I mean it, in general, I'm not a fan of Bunting unless it's the ninth inning or something crazy. But yeah, I was like, okay, all right, we're Bunting. Get the run in. Thank goodness for my gift. Yeah. Yes, I one last thing on this. If it had been last year, because until this year, Harris had really bad numbers against lefties. That's that's objectively true. This year he was actually been good against left-handed pitching like for a full season. Also, he's been awesome this year. Like if that had been Haasong Kim and you Bunted, I would have had no issue with that whatsoever. Like zero problem with that. Haasong Kim is not a good hitter. Bad season. Like if that's Haasong Kim, I'm fine. But it was Michael Harris and I didn't like it. Anyway, moving along. Then we talked about the Rally play. He wasn't trying to swing.
The ball hits the knob of the bat. Just like truly unfortunate stuff. It goes in, it also goes in play. It goes back to the pitcher, which is like even more unlucky than it even had that happen. Dubon does a good job. I thought, extended the run down to make sure that maximum advancement could happen. Rally only got to first, which was an ideal. But like the fact that he was able to get Aussie to third by keeping that alive. Ended up being big because Yes comes through against, it's funny. I left. I love Yes. I'm the As guy on our staff of the four of us. I'm the As guy. I was a big perplexed by him's D.H. against the left-handed pitcher, particularly a top tier one. And I thought this wall think he's going to be out of the game before Yes bats. But it didn't matter. Yes, it's this like seeing I sing almost like he killed it or anything. But I said never a doubt. Yes, against the elite lefty. What are you going to do? Put it on the board. Yes. Sometimes the baseball gods shine bright. And after, I mean, you know, again, we sit off the top.
But that ball that found the knob of Rally's bat, it was like, come on, man. Like that 90, 99% of the time that's either a foul ball or it's a hip-i-pitch. And thankfully it didn't hit Austin in the hand. Because that's the last thing this team needs. And not only did it go in play, but it went perfectly back to the Zardo on the mound. To pitch. It was, yeah, so it was like, oh, man. But credit to Yaz has not been very good against left-handed pitchers this year against the Zardo who's been one of the best lefties in the game all year long. Just found a way to hit the ball just hard enough to sneak it up the middle and just felt good. You know, after that early one, nothing deficit. Everyone was looking around like, here we go again. You know, Joey Votto, first of all, I did not like the broadcast booth today, but we won't go too deep on that. But you know, Joey Votto in the first inning was like, did the Phillies just win the series? After that, that 1-0 double from from BOM, I was like, what are you talking about, dude? It's the first inning of the best of three. Joey Votto, I like his commentary generally, but I thought that was awful.
You know, John Kurekka can take her leave. I feel like CJ Nick Kowski got five words in the entire broadcast, but that's okay. Anyway, I digress. I'll move on, but was not a huge fan of the booth. And I think a lot of people probably shared those thoughts. I only saw second hand. I, as I have ever viewed on Sunday, I was at work for the majority of the game. So I couldn't actually listen. I was watching without commentary, which is almost even more challenging. So I did see a lot of people that were not happy with the broadcast, by the way, always happens when it's a national broadcast. People just want to hear Brandon, and I get it. Brandon's great. But I, you know, not a huge fast version guy. I never have been, you know, all those things. It is what it is. So we barely, we barely even saw the ball go into Brewer Hicklands glove in the ninth inning for the final out. The camera guy, I don't know what he was doing, but it like panned over to left field at like the 11th hour. I was like, what are we doing here? Anyway, I'm on broadcasting is a lot more difficult than it looks on TV. The great ones make it look easy because they're really, really good at what they do.
But anyway, well, that was our at least two-minute detour on the broadcast and actually Brad, let me get this out of you. The field at truest today. Yeah, I, so it was a talking point. People that have watched Braves games all year, or even national folks tuning in for the first time or whatever. And it's like, what's going on with the field? And you know, even in our group chat, like we all watch a ton of Braves baseball. And I get there at concerts and things that happen, but it's like, guys, how is this the field? It's game one of the playoffs. Like it's the weather's up and bad here. Like the weather's been totally fine here. It has some crazy weather situation. I don't know if there was a concert. I should have checked this before we start recording. Like, was there a concert this weekend that messed things up? I don't know. But it was not what you want to put on film. I'm sure the ground screw want that one back. Like, you don't want, look, does it matter in the grand scheme when something happens? No. But like, you don't, what you don't want if you're a tourist park management or people that work there is to have that be a story during an NBC broadcast on a Tuesday afternoon. Like, you don't want that.
And it was it was like, what's going on with the field? Yeah, I don't know. And they've known for like a month that they are very likely hosting a playoff game one way or another. So, yeah, I don't know. That was a top of a conversation. Just want to do at least mention that and the broadcast. That was quite a bit of the conversation today. Which I can honestly see. You don't want that. You want to be focused on the game. You do not want that. We'll breeze through the middle. Ending's a little bit sail as we talked about earlier. Really found his groove was pretty much dialed in in the middle of the game. I want to get you rantic on an ABS challenge situation. So, Michael Harris was wasted. Wasted, waste a challenge in the fourth. Wasn't a great decision by Mike. He's got a great year. It is what it is. That that decision. The next ending. Drake Baldwin gets called out on a strike three on what was a clearly terrible call in the moment. If you look at the game. If you look if you watch the play, it was very obviously outside. If you look at the game day game cast thing on it will be calm. It wasn't even close. And it was strike three.
And it's like, man, that's got to be a challenge. Do we think that was a little bit of him just being gun shy after they blew on the previous ending? Yeah. I think so. You know, it's unfortunate that Mike blew that ABS challenge. I mean, nobody was on base. I think there was already one out. It was a one-o pitch. It was just more, you know, I tweeted during the game. It's like it wouldn't be a brave game regardless of situation if they didn't burn an ABS challenge early in the game on something they shouldn't have burned it on. So, I was frustrating. I don't want to pick on Michael Harris because he was, I mean, maybe the second most valuable player on offense today, maybe third most valuable. But yeah, and then, you know, Drake being the catcher, you absolutely wanted to take one of your challenges with you to the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, especially in playoff games where one pitch can swing the outcome of the baseball game. So, that was annoying in the moment. I thought the home played on today, the one who ejected Chris Sale like a month and a half ago. He wasn't awful. He, you know, he wasn't too bad. I'd be curious to see the Empire scorecard after it wasn't. He didn't insert himself into the game, which is obviously what you, you don't want to see.
But yeah, that was an unfortunate and in the moment when the score was so low, we know these are going to be low scoring games. Every single run, every single out matters. And when you're not utilizing ABS to its full advantages, it was frustrating in the moment. Yeah, I'm with you on that. It was just more of a, it wasn't huge. It wasn't like it would cost them a run directly. It was just one of those moments that you remember of a course of a long game. It's, man, that was such a terrible call. And they could have overturned it didn't matter. In the sixth inning, there were a lot of fireworks. So first, Bryce Harper almost hits a home run. That would have been not a lot of fun for anybody involved. Lord, you know, that happens first. Then that doesn't, that, Sale gets out of it. No damage done. You're still in fine shape. Lazardo leaves the game after his extended opening of five plus settings. And they go to Alex McCfarlane. Harris singles Aussie triples. Now, that could have been a homer. It could have been a flyout.
It could have been a triple and it being a triple. It's just Aussie. I mean, you mentioned it. Just to say the numbers. Harris went three for three today. That's all you could obviously ask for. Aussie won for two with a walk. He was great. That gave the braves the lead. And I felt pretty good about it. And we got to do it early with Austin. But like, they should have been lead three to one. You got a guy on third base who can run with one out. Austin's up next. Bad played appearance. Yes, it comes up with two outs. Knocker play appearance there either. And I was kicking myself. And like, maybe that tells something about the way people think about baseball. But you and I think, when some people think it's like, on the one hand, the brevetech the lead. Should be excited about that. Chris, still on the game. You're up by a run. You're feeling good. My entire brain was like, that extra run they didn't get is going to kill them. Absolutely. And it kind of did. It kind of did kill them until they didn't. But just saying it almost killed them like 10 minutes later. I think in real time, it was quite literally 10 minutes from Yostremsky and Riley striking out.
Or I guess, Riley grounded out in Yostremsky's truck out to Real Mudo's triple down the line. And it was like, here we go again. Philly had taken a three to lead. The big dogs and their bullpen were about to come in. It was just, as we kind of sit off the top, it was very much more of same old braves. They don't know how to win in October. And thankfully, Shabstos and Riley, Shabstamikohair is Shabstos, the obvious forgetting on base. They found a way to win. They kind of reversed this very frustrating trend that we have had since the World Series run. They found a way to win. And you know, it's funny. This was very much the braves as M.O. All year long. Don't do much against stories. Even if you do score a couple runs against the starter, you don't score nearly as many as you could have because they've been pretty rough with runners in scoring position early in games. But then yet, that bullpen, you get a run off of McFarland and then you get the three runs off of Durand. Like it was just, it was very much the 2026 braves today. Yeah, I think the broadcast had it too, but the braves led,
Major League Baseball this year in runs scored from the eighth inning on. And they added, I mean, this doesn't count for that, but they did that again today. Spore a little bit for later on. All right, Scott. We're going to talk about the seventh inning and later. Some questions that I want to get your way about decision making and things. We're going to all of that and more after we're from our partners on today's podcast. I played with players that didn't, I don't think that they really truly loved the game. I found the love with the ball at my foot. But in my head, it was the long game. It was like, I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox. I'm going to go get some reps and I'm going to learn it and love it and embrace it. He said, this group of people will never be in the same room as part of the same team ever again in your life. And it is your job to make sure that you enjoy the moment. You're proud of what you accomplish together. Listen to whatever it takes with Carly Lloyd and Jenny Tafd on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, let's dive back in to the seventh inning. Chris sale leaves the game with words on the corners and one out. He gave up a hit by pitch and not like a scolving single. But as you mentioned earlier, Vato noted he was maybe running out of gas a little bit. I was not surprised because I know the internet is what's going to happen.
People were mad that they took sale out. I don't want to leave the witness. What did you think about that decision? And I'll tell you what I thought. I thought sale was running out of gas. You know, the two runners who got on base, that hit by pitch just grazed. I think it was old friend Brian De La Cruz. I think it just grazed his quad, which is like, come on, man. If that balls half an inch the other way, it's going to miss him. But and then the ball that Bryson stopped hit into the outfield was like a foot off the plate. And he just got his bat around it and hooked it in. So, you know, in the seventh inning in my mind, it's like, okay, we're getting closer to Didier Fuentes and Dylan Lee time. Yeah, I mean, you never want to take sale out of a game. But I thought it was the right call in the moment. I will say I was not screaming to take sale out. There are times when I'm like, get the guy off the mount and I'm losing my mind. I was not doing that. But when he came to get him, I was like, okay, it makes total sense.
Especially because they were going to Fuentes. That's the other part of this. So there's the results based, we try to be processed based on this podcast. There's a result space case like, oh, it didn't work. There's what's a Fuentes. He blew it or whatever. Let me just say this for everybody. Didier Fuentes has been the best reliever on the team this year. The most valuable reliever on the team. Better than Glacias, better than Lee, underlying metrics, more endings. He has been an incredible this season. Like, I saw him getting top five rookie of the year votes from national writers this weekend for a reason as a relief as a non-closer reliever. That's how good he has been. So, I know we didn't do the job today. I get it. But like, for me, I'm not going to do the results based thing. I feel really good about Fuentes on the mound. And that's about, he got the out that actually was the tougher one to get. Like, he came in the game first and throw one out. He's the pop up. I'm like, all right, we're good here. And then Real Moots would beat him. And it happens. Like, it wasn't a great pitch. But we could feel better about this now.
But I promise I'd say the same thing if they lost this game. I didn't have a problem with the decision at all. And I still trust Fuentes. He's a young guy, first playoff moment. Maybe he was big for him. I get all that. But like, I feel totally good. And like, I won't defend Walt for no reason. Like, if he does something stupid, I'll say so. I'll say so. I was fine with it. I really thought it was. I think it was the right call. And you mentioned he got Crawford to pop up a shallow fly ball, which was absolutely what you wanted, because Crawford can fly. If he even hits a brown ball right at somebody, he's probably beating out the double play and the run comes in. And then just unfortunate. I didn't love the pitch selection, whether that was from Drake Baldwin or from the dugout, an outer corner fastball. Real Mudo is old now. He kind of shoots everything the other way. I would try to beat him inside and make him get his bat around on it, or throw him a couple of sliders in the dirt and see if he'll chase. I think Real Mudo ended the year with an OPS and the low 600s. So frustrating that he was the guy to beat you, although he's had a heck of a career. But yeah, it was the right call to bring in Didier Fuentes.
And then Shouts to Dillon Lee, who came in the eighth inning, even with the brave's trailing, and did a really nice job against Schwarber and Harper at the top of the order to keep the game close. Oh, for sure. I agree. He was awesome. I have one more question that I have to ask you by contractual obligation. Ronnie did not make a great play in Redfield. And I have to ask you, we agree on that number one. Ronnie misplayed that. There's no gray area there whatsoever. I wasn't a hundred percent convinced that the second run wasn't going to score anyway. Like, I think there was a lot of people say, oh, a Cunyacossum second run. It might be true. I'm not even saying that I'm right. I was just like, we're being a little bit flippant with like, oh, that definitely calls us like, guys, it's a double derailleur feel with a guy on first base. Like, who could run? It wasn't like, you know what I mean? It seemed like a two outs. Maybe I'm great. You can tell me I'm wrong. There's a guy, yeah, two outs guys running on the pitch. Like, maybe he doesn't score and Ronnie made it easier to be clear. He botched it. And I was like, I actually wonder if that would have happened anyway.
I was curious. I mean, it would have been a lot closer for sure. Over. Yes. You know, NBC, NBC had a good angle. They showed it a couple minutes after the play. So maybe people didn't necessarily clock it or see it. The ball, as it went from the grass to the dirt, right as Ronald was approaching it, took a weird bounce. It really bounced up. It must have hit like a little rock or pebble or something because it jumped over Ronald's glove. Now, you could say sure if Ronald takes a better route or if he gets there a little bit quicker, maybe he's able to get in front of that ball instead of. And then he also kind of bobbled and dropped the ball in the corner once he was able to get to it. I kind of want to go back and look at it again anytime it's Ronald. It doesn't matter now. Yeah. I think you might have been about to say this. Anything with Ronald just gets ratcheted way up. Which I understand. I just, I didn't want to be like automatically like, oh, that he screwed them. It doesn't matter now. Water on the bridge. And he did misplay it very obviously. I'm not defending the play. You played it badly.
Just one of those things. We would have spent water on that if had they lost. But they won. Yes. Right. Everything's better with wins, man. And that's what if people are new to the show or if you're a long time listener and it's been a few years since you've listened to a winning postseason podcast. I mean, you have to go back to 2023. Now, this is what we do. We recap the good and the bad. I mean, shoot. The Night the Braves won the World Series. And like the 30 minute mark, we had to talk about the good and the bad. You know, like we're dancing in our seats and ready. That wasn't a really an version that night, I think. Right. I think you didn't quite do the full beat on that night, but you're right. We have to. But you know, that's what you have to do. The good, the bad winner lose. That's kind of what we do on these on these postseason shows. And they are certainly a lot more fun when you have a collage homer in the eighth inning to win it. Shout-out to our guy Eric Cole, who was with us on that podcast. Yes. Hooker listening, Eric. Okay. The Braves are not losing. You mentioned, Dylan Lee. Ronald barely missed a game tying homer in the seventh. It was a hundred six mile an hour. Like he just missed it to left center.
And then in the eighth, Olson smokes a hundred mile an hour liner that somehow Durant caught. I don't know how to caught that ball. Like I'm not sure what he got in through because they had the shift on for Olson. So I'm not saying it was like they're going to. But like the fact that a reliever caught that ball was like, what are we even doing here? He didn't catch the ball. The ball caught his glove. Well, exactly. It was like, what's going on? Yeah. It was very much that. Yeah. Ronald just missed that homer. The previous inning. It was a hundred and six off the bat. Just missed it. When he hit it, I thought, oh, that might go. And it was a warm day and didn't quite get out. And then yeah, and even Olson kind of like, looked to the sky like, come on, man. That's, I mean, it's a well-struck ball. I think it would have gotten through. The second baseman was shifted over pretty far. So, you know, that's a lead off single in a one run game in the eighth inning. Very frustrating. Even more of like the seriously, we can't catch a break here. And thankfully, Michael Harris, you know, a chop single up the middle and then the, and then the all these walk. And then Austin's homer to win the thing. But yeah, that was very much like, all right. Here we go. More of the same. Can't get on base.
Can't win. Thankfully, things, things turned for the better. Brad Roland. I was all loaded up to talk about whether they should have pitch run for Matt in that spot. If you, if he was off the single, did they pitch run for him? Interesting. Like, like he's like a sacred cow. Like, you don't want to take my whole set out of the game. But he is so slow. He is so slow. So I, I don't know. We'll never know if they would have. But it would have been a talking point on this podcast. If that gets through. Oh, okay. So we talked about the Austin Heroics. That was the happens in the eighth. So Durand, through 27 pitches, a lot of activity, like he had to go out and like he backed up, play up. There's the triple, all the things that happen. I wonder if he's going to be down tomorrow. Somebody asked us that in the on Twitter. And I'm like, it's right on the borderline. If he throw 37 pitches, I'd like, no, he's not pushing him. But they brought him into seventh inning. I think you would have pitched the knife if he had held the lead.
That was going to be the plan for three innings, which is definitely, we're in the playoffs, folks. Everything is different. If you need a reminder of that, that was today. You see the closer coming to seventh inning, for throwing a potential three innings save. But I don't know if he's going to be down tomorrow, but I do like that he had to work today. So if he has to come in tomorrow, the braves could get him again more easily. Yes. So 27 today and Durand pitched on Sunday afternoon, as the Phillies were trying to clinch it against the raise. So I don't think he pitched Saturday because it got blown out. So he has pitched two of the last three days. And it's from probably 40 pitches, give or take in the last 72 hours. So that's significant. I mean, the answer, Brad, is I would love to not even know if Durand's available, because the braves are up five nothing. And they can cruise behind Tyler Malley and the bullpen. But I would have to think unless he just physically cannot throw a baseball as hard as he usually throws it, I would have to think that he is available. And what is now an elimination game for the Phillies?
I would agree. As we're recording, by the way, Chris sale is on the day us with Austin. And he said that he said, and I quote, I don't think I've screamed that loud in a very long time talking about the Austin homer. I love Chris sale along my heart. I have to say Chris sales the man. And then for audio, we have to keep it PG. But Mauricio Dubon had an incredible quote to the media scrum after the game. Everybody loves Mauricio Dubon. Just seems like a good dude. His quote was, and I quote, where Fingedog's man end quote. Cursey of Chad Bishop with the adc. Thanks Chad for that. That was fantastic. Yeah, Mauricio's an awesome interview. Anyway, we're off the rails a little bit. There was an Austin rowy chant, breaking out into concourse at your spark that made the rounds on Twitter via Boman, I think. Lots of fun stuff along the way. Oh, and it glaces pitched well. I know he allowed the lead off single, but erased it right away through seven pitches. So that's a bright spot for going into going to Wednesday on the other side of Durand.
The Braves Big Three relievers all pitched today. But none of them threw a lot of pitches. Like they're all full scale available tomorrow, bearing something surprising, which is that's always nice. When there's no concern about your relievers going into game two, you feel good about that. Should be and you only had a pitch, you're big three. So we know how good Dylan Dodd has been. I wouldn't be shocked. Ideally you get five or six good innings at a Tyler Malley and then you go to maybe Dodd, the first time you see Harper and Schwarbert and neutralize them. And Robert Swarrett didn't get into the game today. You know, on the lower scale, guys like Victor Madiros and Ray Kerr, who have thrown the ball really, really well at times in the second half. Those guys are also fresh. So we knew how important this game was and the fact that Sail was able to work into the seventh inning and the pitch counts for the big three in the ball pen roll relatively low today is a good sign for both game two and also game three should we get there. The ocean moves us, surfing a wave or savoring the view. The ocean delights us as playful otters restore coastal kelp forest.
The ocean connects us. Visit monoraybayacorium.org slash connects. I don't think that they really truly love the game. I found the love with the ball at my flight. We got you. Listen to good game with Sarah Spain on the iHeart Radio app Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. Scott, before we get out of here, there was some roster and lineup decisions that were made prior to the game that felt like are worthy of some discussion even now because the series is ongoing. First thing, what's the line up? Like all kinds of decisions. Like, so just the ones that were more getting attention were, you know, Drake caught, which isn't surprising, but I guess the lefty that could have played Murphy and they didn't. Yes, D.H.A.S. lefty was certainly interesting. DuBon played left field instead of shortstop because they had Haasan Kim and shortstop. Those were kind of the big ones. Did you like love or hate any of those decisions? I was pretty surprised, especially against the lefty, that Sean Murphy was not in there because for the better part of a month and a half, the automatic lineup against lefty's has been Drake as the D.H.A.S. and Murphy catching. I know Murphy has really struggled. You know, we had those
couple of weeks where he looked good in August, but since then it's been a lot of struggles and strikeouts for Murphy. You know, the only thing I think for game two, they're very likely going to see Christopher Sanchez who is also a lefty. I think the change I would make is I would put Mauricio DuBon at shortstop. I'd probably put Brewer Hicklin in left field if they really worried about it or even just start Yeas. You know, Hicklin has reverse splits in the minor leagues. He was much better against Rides than lefties and I'm sure the Braves are aware of that. It just, Kim has been so bad. I'm rooting for the guy. I know we had the couple of big hits in the clutch down the stretch, but I don't really want to see Kim in there. He had a really rough at bat earlier in the game too that we didn't talk about. I could have loaded the bases for Drake Baldwin. You had Luzardo on the ropes and Kim swung at balls four and five in the abat. So that's the only one I think I'm probably in favor of. Frankly, it's more about Gittu Bonnet shortstop. And then if you want to play Yeas and left, even against the lefty, that's fine. If you want to get Hicklin out there,
okay, whatever the fact is, you would ideally like to have Lane Thomas or a better right-handed option to put out there and they just don't have that. Yeah, they do miss Lane Thomas in that role. I would go Murphy tomorrow. Everything is correct. He has been brutal for the last few weeks. I will know that he did go three for seven in the last two games that he played in. So like some minor signs, but I'm not saying it's going to be good. I promise you, I'm not, but it's because of the other eye. If they had Lane Thomas, I would be much more open to not playing Murphy, but because they don't have Lane Thomas, I think you should play Murphy and DH Baldwin. That's what I would do. But I'm with you. Do Bonnet shortstop. It's my most important thing too. I all respect the Haas on Kim. I'm good. I'm going to. Well, and yeah, I agree with you. And look, I'm not, I've run out of ammo to defend Sean Murphy been a long time. So this guy was a good hitter. I'm the last one doing it. I'm the last one with my sword. We'll be getting on Sean. It's fine. But, but, but, but. The one thing that Sean Murphy can still do is run into a fastball
and hit it 400 feet over the fence. It's not likely. It's not remotely likely against a good hitter in Christopher Sanchez. But that is something Sean Murphy can still do despite this wing and miss. He barely puts the ball in play or at least barely put the ball in play in September. But if Chris Sanchez makes a mistake with a fastball or a breaking ball in the zone, Murphy can hit it a long way when he gets contact. And that is something that's probably more valuable than Haas on Kim, who's, who's just a, you know, a lost cause at this point. Yeah, I think the Murphy numbers with Tyler Mallier good as well. But we'll let the boys preview that later on in more detail. The roster had some interesting decisions on it as well, which came out this morning. So we couldn't talk about on the podcast because it was like, it was too too late in the game. They went with 11. Yes, 11 pictures, only 11. No one, no one that I saw, not one person that I saw project a roster had 11 pictures. People had 12 pictures. 11 was a surprise. And then beyond that,
Roddy Teles and Luke Williams are on this roster. Neither of them were on the 40 man yesterday. So thoughts, I don't know what to say about this, but I am an honest man. I did not know Luke Williams was still in the organization. I when, when I saw that this morning, I was like, what? He's still around. Did they sign him like five days? Nope. He's been with the team. I knew Roddy Teles had been around. That one did make sense. I wish I was thinking about our shows. I'm like, somebody should have thought, maybe they'll call up Roddy as another left-handed pinch hit bat. Should they need him? Bench bat. Yeah. And they pit him. He had a bench bat. But yeah, like I was like, oh, okay. All right. I guess it makes sense. I was a little surprised that AJ Smith-Schauver was not carried. Although he did give up a couple of homers in his final appearances and you cannot give up homeruns in a playoff game. And also Smith-Schauver might be in the running to start slash open slash replace an opener. Should the Braves get to game one against
the Dodgers and cover a couple innings with his live arm. So maybe that's also part of the thought of, hey, we're not going to burn AJ for, you know, game two or game three in the series because we may need him or J.R. Richie in game one of the division series if we get there. So that was the only thing I was like, oh, interesting. I kind of thought AJ would make it. But I wasn't, you know, pounding the table asking, what are they doing? Yeah, I agree with all of that. They actually DFAed Elias Hernandez today to make room for one of Roddy and Luke Williams. I'm not kidding. I actually wonder if like five percent of decision of Luke Williams that he might be my pitch. Like if they got down 15, nothing, I think you pitch. Because otherwise, like it's all fun in games, but like you mentioned to me, I didn't think about this. The fact that it's not Jim Jarvis instead of Luke Williams is kind of funny because Jim Jarvis started a shortstop for like a month. Yeah. And now it's Luke Williams out of the cold in late September. And also no less jokingly,
I was more surprised that it wasn't Kyle farmer because Kyle farmer has been the emergency catcher. Yeah. And also is a better hitter than Luke Williams, like almost certainly. So I that one made me raise my eyebrows. Does it really matter if those guys play? I'm going to say this before you. You're going to say this instead of that, I'm going to say it for you. If these guys play things have gone wrong, I understand. The only tell though, I have to say there was a funny thing today. When Riley was coming up for the what became the game winning home run, people that I think are smart on Twitter were like, do you pinch hit for Riley with Riley to Les? That literally happened on my timeline. I saw it. Oh yeah, I saw it too. Yeah. And by the way, that wasn't totally insane. I guess the dominant right-handed picture. That's not like totally insane. But the fact that the great things full circle people were talking about pitch hitting Riley to Les who they who they called up today for Austin Riley, who they're paying $200 million and then also Riley Homer to win the game. Yeah. What a day. What a day of baseball Scott. What a day. Yes. Very thankful that Walt Lice did not press
that button. I don't think you would. Riley with his long long long long. But still. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was never going to happen, especially in game one. You know what? You don't want to lose Riley. That's what honestly, even if you thought to Les was maybe like 1% better, you probably still don't do it because you don't want to lose Riley in game one of the series. Playoff baseball games are never normal. There's always something like this happened for the first time in four years or you know like the the Alec Bome double off sale was the second time all year long a fastball up and out of the zone was hitting. It's just like oh my gosh these games are never normal. They're never regular. There's always something bizarre. You know the only time I want to see Luke Williams in a game is if he is sliding into home plate because the Braves just won and he was a pinch runner after a lead off double in a tie game or something like that. I mean that's the rule. Sure. I mean even when we know with the DH pinch hitting is is less and less frequent. You know in a best of three you don't need 13 pitchers to get you there. Even if you did get into a weird scenario where you went 15 or 16 innings guys like Brent Souter can go multiple innings for
you and it can just keep throwing until there's no one left to throw. So yeah it was you know some interesting roster decisions but in a best of three I kind of understand prioritizing the specialists where it's like sure I could see a situation where Luke Williams would be needed. Whereas AJ Smith-Shawver being needed with everything else that we know is probably not super likely. Yeah and if they if they win this series there will be more than 11 pitchers on the ODS roster. I'm 100% sure about that. And look they they did use two bench guys today. They used Dom Smith and Brewer Hicklin. I think because of the lack of talents honestly at the bottom of the line up sometimes they're gonna cycle some matchups stuff. You're gonna see two or three bench guys used every game no matter what I feel like just because of what they don't have honestly. But hey it worked today. Before we get out of here we should we should say if you're listening to this this far you probably already doing this because you're probably a die hard. Thank you for watching leave for listening. We will have another episode before game two. Sean Steven are playing
new record a game two preview dedicated deep dive to have their thoughts on that. We're trying to give you guys a ton of content this week this month etc etc so we're gonna spend like one minute right now previewing game two but if you're not there'll be more of that coming up in your podcast feeds before the game on Wednesday. Game two is Tyler Malley I guess Chris Anches. Tyler Malley we've sung his praises justifiably so he's been awesome. Our guys at Calche have this game 50 50 literally 50 50 as of right now on Tuesday evening. That feels right to me and the Chris Anches as good as Tyler Malley is said this is better than Malley and the games in Atlanta. It's obviously a must win for Philadelphia. I hope you're right and I'm wrong if people listen on Sunday you Scott picked graves in two I said graves in three I hope Scott's right. I hope I'm right too because we would breathe so much easier not having to mess with a game three not having to you know having two days off to then travel to LA would be a really nice boost give
everybody another breather yeah it's gonna be it's gonna be tight and the fillies you bet are gonna come out fighting for the playoff lives they are a team that have a ton of post season success just like the braves but those guys know they are 27 hours away from being eliminated and on the other hand the braves are 27 hours away from moving on and advancing in the post season so yes let's hope Tyler Malley who had a little bit of a hiccup in his final start of the regular season he did settle in over the last few innings of that of that start and was more of himself he has been so so good since the deadline even like the month before the deadline he was throwing the ball really well with the giants has been one of the 20 or so best pitchers in the game since the middle of June since he came back from that hamstring injury I think he had so let's hope good Tyler Malley let's hope the bullpen is ready to rock tomorrow few more clutch hits let's take advantage if we get runners on base early let's take advantage of them that was something the braves really struggled with today in the early innings they had some base runners on against Lazardo but they just could not score them
which was really frustrating you have to make the most of whenever you get your advantages and and let's hope they go out there maybe don't need heroics in the eighth inning in order to get home but something tells me Brad we're going to be sweating and our heart rates are going to be pounding for the final few innings tomorrow it would not be playoff baseball otherwise that's what playoff baseball tends to do to us yeah and as a reminder playoff baseball is weird which means Tyler Malley's even if we love Tyler Malley and we do his leash will be shorter tomorrow he's not Chris Dale you don't you don't you don't give him like I would not pencil in Malley for six endings tomorrow like maybe he does it that'd be great but I think they will be really willing eager to use their bullpen which is a strength of a team in game two so stay tuned for that and again one more time please subscribe to hammer territory anywhere you find your podcast that will be a podcast again after this one before game two and then as always will be a game two post podcast Scott and I will have at some point after the game on Wednesday and God willing more games after that once there's definitely another game after that now that they won this one today so stay stay tuned please

brave's just man it reminded me today and then we'll get out of here this game reminded me of how fun and how euphoric baseball playoffs can be and to be honest we haven't had a lot of fun moments in the playoffs the last few years really since the world series they've two wins and those two games were sandwiched around some excruciating losses so today's game and it was just so much fun chefs to Austin Riley chefs to Chris sale chefs to Ozzy and Mike for making it happen chefs to the bullpen other than one unfortunate pitch from Didier Fontez was really strong today just keep it rolling let's let's wrap this thing up on Wednesday night we'll set my friend we've set it all ready please subscribe one more top the heritory territory anywhere you find your podcast stay tuned and we'll see everybody next time the ocean delights us some marvel at the colorful world below the surface the ocean feeds us others find nourishment and it's bounty the ocean teaches us how our everyday choices impact even the deepest places the ocean moves us whether we're riding a wave
