The Penguins dropped their second preseason game 7-4 to the Detroit Red Wings, and the play in net was not encouraging. Hunter and Patrick begin the Wednesday edition by talking about goaltender Arturs Silovs’s forgettable night. (1:10) While it is preseason and he didn’t have a full NHL defense in front of him, some of his issues are the same ones he’s been struggling with for a while. So, is it time to worry, or was he just knocking off the rust? Then, despite the loss on Tuesday night, there were plenty of positives to take away from the game. (14:00) The Ruck Twins were solid in their debut, two of the Penguins’ new defensemen had big nights, and much more. Finally, camp is already winding down; they look at the remaining schedule and when they think some cuts will happen. (25:30)

Catch you all up on the schedule for the rest of the week going into next week which of course the regular season starts a week from today in Philadelphia against the flyers the Pat. We have to start here recapping the 7 to 4 loss to the to the Detroit Red Rings excuse me. We will get to the positives because there were some solid positives to come from this game but we got to start with the negative and already she loves my man that was not a good effort to say the least and I understand the defense was not very good especially in front of the net and granted the bottom two pairs you know they're going to look a lot

different let's just say that when the regular season starts next Wednesday so Pat and I are going to come on here and overreactor anything TVR didn't play Crystal Tang didn't play Eric Carlson didn't play either hasn't played the entirety of the preseason though that's probably going to change either on Thursday or Saturday the bad defensive play did not like already she loves game whatsoever two pedestrian seven goals on 23 shots and there were a couple where I was like okay maybe he couldn't have done much there but for the majority of them Pat they really weren't great a chances in my book he just flat out with and his rebound control was really bad and it's only preseason I get that but not a good start for him in the slightest I was saying it to you before we hit record the last two goals that the Red Wing scored I can't put on his shoulders the seventh goal deflected off of like eight different things on its way to the net he tried to

guess where the deflection was going didn't guess that happens that's what happens on deflection goals the sixth goal Igor Chinacov just decided that nothing on the ice mattered except wherever the puck was and I'm not with this game yeah and he just completely lost a man which led to that goal but you hit on a couple of things there that I do think have to be discussed about she loves tonight or last night depending upon when you're listening to this is that the rebound control is still an issue there were a lot of very juicy rebounds for Detroit shooters there were a lot of there were a couple of goals that were direct results of poor rebound control and two things can be true at once like you said yes the net front defense was not that great and we will talk about it in the second segment I do think there were a lot of

positives from the penguins defense overall but one of them in this game was not the net front defense it was pretty bad all things considered they lost a lot of the net front defense they didn't cover guys correctly and that led to a tough night for Arter Sheel but then there's the other other side of that you are allowed to make a safe and granted again it is pre season I'm not going to over react to it but these are some of the issues that have cropped up with Arter Sheel loves throughout his career his inconsistencies his inability to control rebounds so it's a little bit worrisome but we also do have to keep in mind that this defense in front of him in a week from tonight is going to be vastly different right I already said TBR is going to be in the lineup crystal tang is going to be there air Carlson we all

know is going to be there he just hasn't played in the preseason yet I would have been cool to see him with deck and carlile keep his cool little bit later on in the game from the opening puck drop pad he was just ready to go with literally anyone and I tweeted this as well after he got in the scuffle with Cindy Crawl's we would just spend a couple minutes on this before getting back to she loves you know I think he's going to become a fan favorite pretty quickly if he keeps doing this I did appreciate him stepping in the back of the game and I think he's going to be the greatest players of all time for sure I said to you in a text I think the whole code thing is mostly outdated very caveman brain but there are parts of it that are still extremely valid in that's one of them I get its preseason I get that this 22 year old Johanton is trying to make a name for himself especially with how to

mulch you as things have been going on with them but there's 15 or 16 other players wearing penguins jerseys that you can start taking pokes at and start trying to rile up. Sydney Crosby isn't one of them so I do appreciate the fact that Carlisle jumped right in there and basically put the message out to Johansson and as he was getting escorted back to his bench the rest of the red wings bench basically saying any of you touch Sid I'm coming after you and we know Sid doesn't need protection we know Sid is not a shrinking violet he will step up he will defend himself he will play physical but it is always nice to know that for the group for the unit that there are players who are going to step in and kind of push 87 to the side and say hey don't you don't need to do this we can do it right exactly and even like

after that whole first situation Sid was just feisty all game you you wouldn't know it was a preseason game by the way he was acting he was really fired up about a whole bunch of plays that happened later on in the game a couple of them happened to him but for other penguins teammates as well for example that neon knee play with Raquel and that red wings player I do not like that type of hit at all I just I don't care I get your point and I agree with it that anytime I see a need a knee it's it's cringe inducing just because of how dangerous it is yeah if there is one thing I will say about this game as a whole and it applies to both the penguins and the red wings this is a sloppy hockey game yeah and seeing that need need a knee with Raquel what much like the stuff with Carlisle and Johansson I appreciate the fact that a bunch of guys were willing to step up and make a guy answer for that but I also looked at a lot of this game

and I looked at that hit and went it's just a game where these guys are not in sync they're not at their best and that didn't feel like a vicious or ill intent kind of need a knee it wasn't a player throwing a cheap shot it was a guy who tried to line up a hit didn't line it up right kind of got walked in just stuck his knee out instinctively rather than with the intent to injure because you that was the other thing that I was going to say when you brought up the stuff with Sid this was a weirdly sloppy and weirdly aggressive game for all involved and as a hockey fan enjoyed that for pre-season because usually pre-season is like watching paint dry but this was a game where both of these teams for some reason were fired the hell up and you know what for pre-season game number two in a short and pre-season it seems like mostly everybody

got out of this one healthy I'll take that honestly like Loki reminding me have you seen like some of those like past panthers lightning pre-season games where they just like all take runs at one another they just rack up the penalties just because they hate each other and they were just not care I kind of get it from both teams perspectives I mean the guys at the top of the line up for the penguins in the same for the red wings they there were probably six seven maybe eight players on both sides that you know for sure are going to be on the opening night roster for both teams but it was a lot of guys on both sides for the most part that are fringe players so they were out there trying to make a name for themselves and when you're only playing for pre-season games we've been saying it all week the time to make a name for yourself and the time to make an impression is right now and there

is not much time to do it so you have to figure a lot of these fringe roster players all across the NHL this pre-season are fired up and they're going to do a lot more than you would usually see in a pre-season game. Yeah and I think the roster for Thursday's game you're going to see a lot more of those fringe players for the penguins in that game we've already we've talked a lot about how Saturday we think is going to be the rest rehearsal you'll probably see some of the fringe players there kind of a bit too but Thursday I think you're definitely going to see that in just real quick again on she allows before we get to the second segment and talk more about the defenseman that we thought played well so on the Cating Corps act for example again very much pre-season but did not like the rebound control I don't think he was attacking the puck very well either and again the poor defense does not help but I feel like he could have saved a lot of a lot of those changes it didn't look like the player that I saw in the Stanley Cup playoffs especially in game six and I understand he had a very up and down regular season played some of the games of his life

in the playoffs you and I talked a lot about how we want him to be more consistent that's what we really really want that when the regular season starts and was part of this maybe him getting the rust off maybe a little bit but you still got to be better even if it's just pre-season we're not here over reacting we just we want to see better because I feel like a lot of those goals that he gave up were goals that I think he could have had to be off I want to see what he does when the regular season begins because I can absolutely hear the argument that he's shaking the rust off after after the off season and again you look at the defense in front of him and a lot of the roster in front of him as well a lot of guys who aren't going to be in the NHL this year so I'm not going to over react to it I'll give him a pass but there are some things to be concerned about I will say but he's got plenty of time to write that ship. Yeah things to be a little concerned about keep tabs on I think is a good way to say it as well so

we'll see at the end of the day I want to see you know how he does when the regular season starts I've gotten some tweets from people saying like oh you got to wave him he's not going to make the team guys it's not a react here he's going to be on the team and I do think he is going to start opening night unless they want to give that to one of stargamer Ashaw or you Oblomakus but as of still right now I think they are going to give him the start against Philly next Wednesday and he is going to play quite a few games for the penguins this year but that's going to do it for our first segment coming up in the second segment Pat and I are going to discuss some of the defense that we thought played well during the game as well as the rock twins because they played pretty well as well that's coming up right after this but before we get to that we have to tell you all that one of our sponsors which is Odo running a business should not feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together one app for accounting another for inventory another for sales and somehow none of them talk to each

I want to see him use that a little bit more during the regular

season. I thought he played well. Same Gerard a little bit up and down at times during the game, but the play that he made on record record, Rekelsgole, excuse me, got that pass. Thing of beauty. So I wanted to shout out those two at least to start that play, especially by Gerard was really nice. I liked both their games quite a bit. And I said it in the first segment. I do think outside of the net front defense. This was not a bad game at all for the penguins defense. Now, not having good net front defense is kind of a pretty big black mark because that's the most important place to play defense. But yeah, the Gerard pass to the pass shot, I guess you could say to Rekel was really nice through a lot of traffic, really had his head up the whole way, put a lot on it, really set Rekel up for success on that one. Korzak, I liked his overall game. I thought the goal was a nice little cherry on top, but he was physical. He was in the right places at the right time, seemed

to own the puck, love that for him. And we already talked about Carlisle. I liked his aggression, liked his physicality. And we know that the way the NHL is trending, you're going to need that. You're going to need some guy who's not afraid to get into the muck, a guy who's not afraid to play a hard-nosed kind of game, especially on the back end. So if they can get that from him this season, I think you're dead on Hunter that he's going to be a fan favorite right from the jump. And for the sickos like us who watched this game tonight, this was his first shot to really show people. This guy wants to be here and this guy is going to play with a lot of pride. Yeah, and I felt later on in the game, when they gave him the two in the extra two in the misconduct, I'm fine with the first four. Don't really see the need for a misconduct there, Pat. I felt that was a little too egregious. I understand he was fired up. He went after that player pretty aggressively, but I don't think what he did wanted to tend there.

I just felt the ref went a little too far with that. I think that was more the officials just kind of say, hey man, you've been in this stuff all night. Just go cool off for a bit. I get that people think it was excessive, but I think that was more the refs looked at it and said, he's going to need a little bit more in a four minute time out. He's been hot all night. So yeah, it's a bit excessive, but I also kind of get it. Yeah, I get what you're saying. I just felt like, did you really need to add on the intent there? I think the four is good. I don't think he really warranted 14 penalty minutes there, but again, I digress outside of those three Tommy Galvestonite, bit rougher in the net front, but again, I'm not surprised. And nobody really should be surprised. Did he light up the prospect torment? Yes, and that's all fine and dandy, but he's been quiet at camp, had a very quiet night tonight. These are the growing pains you expect from someone

who is 20 years old, went undrafted a couple of times. He's got him in the second round. He definitely has a good amount of talent, and we've seen him do it in games, but it's very obvious he's on edge already. He's going to go back to check. He'll work on his game there. He'll come back to Wilkesbury at the end of the year. And I think he'll show up a bigger and a better player. So there's nothing really wrong with that overall. So just my thoughts on Tommy Galvestonite. Yeah, it was a little rough for him. I think he was kind of the one defenseman tonight that probably wasn't if you rank him one to six, he was probably easily six out of all the defensemen that played against Detroit. And he, you could kind of see that he was adjusting to the way the game has played in North America, especially on one of the goals where he tied up the guy kind of from his waist and didn't get his stick. And at a level like the NHL, you're, you got to go for the stick in that,

in that instance off the rebound because shooters at this level, shooters at this level of strength, they're going to be able to get their stick down. They're going to be able to pop in that rebound. And that'll come with time. That'll come with experience. So you said, you know, he lit up the prospect tournament. He should as a 20 year old that has played professionally and check you for a couple of years. That should be a place where he feasts and he did. Now you go to the next level, you play in the NHL preseason, you get that idea, you get that taste of what you got to work on, you get that firsthand experience of what you're good at, what you struggle with. And this is a player who has a lot of talent. He has really good foot speed. It's got really good vision. You give him another year of pro hockey and check. Yeah, bring him over at the end of the year to play with the baby penguins. And you got something here. Yeah. And I think that's probably, he's probably going to get

sent back to check. If I had to guess by the start of the weekend, maybe by the end, but I just think based on what he did three days of camp based on tonight, I think you can get him over there a little bit early, get him more reaclimated with his teammates over there. He's not ready. And that's fine. I think there is going to come a point when he is ready. It's just not right now. And that's that on that outside of him. Want to shout out Nick Robertson for his goal tonight, Pat just blistering speed, short handed. By the way, this is a player who literally played only seven minutes on the pk last year. He does not have many minutes on the penalty. He hasn't even played 15 combined minutes on the pk during his career. Dan, you said the hell with that. I'm going to use him a little bit on the pk tonight. Looked like a pretty decent fit at least towards the end of it and had a really nice call there goes right around the red wing defender. Beautiful goal past John Gibson. He's been electric during camp carry that over into tonight really nice job. And then real quickly before we head to the final segment, I'll get your thoughts on this

too. Thought the rock twins were really good tonight, too. Liam, rock a couple of assists. I liked the McGrody goal at the end. McGrody thought he was a bit pedestrian tonight. He really needed that goal at the end though. And yeah, no people will say it's garbage time. It's garbage time. But he still needed it, especially since I don't think he was one of like the top positive players from this game, but it was nice to see him get it. Liam, rock to Marcus to rocker really nice past just a nice passing play by all three there. And they're able to get on the score sheet a bit later. So those are my main thoughts on Marcus and Liam. I'm excited to see what they can do in medicine hat this year. And Nick Roberts and doing Nick Roberts and things Pat, I give it to you. I can't go to the majority. McGrody needed the confidence boost that that's the he didn't have the greatest of games, but he's been having a solid camp. So getting on the board, I think, is a net positive for him. I know pretty obvious statement, but it's one of those moments and one of those

things that can keep the wind in his sales, so to speak, through the rest of camp. For the rock twins, listen, they're not breaking camp. They're going back to junior. They're going to go to college the year after that. But I will say this much in an NHL preseason game against the roster that much like the penguins was a solid mix of NHL regulars, prospects and fringe players. They did not look out of place. They did not look overwhelmed. They did not like look like they don't belong, but they're still going to need a lot of development in a lot of seasonings. But as far as this game against the Red Wings go, they were pretty darn good. And I'm really excited for their future. As for Robertson, I mean, we wanted to see that this line that has been working in camp together of Krasby Rakell and Robertson was able to do it in a game setting. I would go as far as to say they did. Yes, Robertson's goal was short-handed, so it wasn't the full line. But a lot of

the time when that line was on the ice, they were putting up pressure on the Red Wings. They were getting chances. And Robertson, I don't feel uncomfortable saying this. He was one of the best players on the ice for the majority of the game. And if he wants to continue to be on the penguins top line with Sydney Krasby, this is the kind of stuff that he needs to do. And I thought he was genuinely one of the better players on both teams all night long. And that is a really, really encouraging sign for him. Yeah. And the more that I watch tonight, the more that I watch that line, the more... No, my confidence increased a bit that this is going to be the top line when the season starts. Next one is a whole bunch can change over the next week, but my confidence continues to increase that that is going to be the penguin stop line. And Philly, and at least to maybe start the season against Montreal and the home opener, and they may be a little bit further into the season as well. But Pat, unless you have anything else to add about this game, I think that's

going to do it for the second segment. Coming up to end the show, we're going to discuss what's left of training camp and the preseason. It's kind of just do like a refresher of the schedule going forward for the rest of the week and all that, and that's coming up right after this. But before we get to that, we have to talk to you all about our next sponsor, which is Calci. The buck is about to drop on a new NHL season, who makes the playoffs, who wins their division, and who has what it takes to win the Stanley Cup on Calci, American number one prediction market platform. You can trade those predictions in a live market, for example, the car of avalanche, they are trading at 12% to win the Stanley Cup, meaning a $100 payout. Payout to excuse me, a $100 trade pays out to a $784.91 if they win a Stanley Cup. Now, if you want to think about the Eastern Conference final for the four campers, they are trading at 20%, meaning a $100 trade pays out $437.45 if they win the Eastern Conference.

Calci, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house, and as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position, tell the Calci app and use code locked on to get $25 when you trade $25. All right, we're back here to close out the Wednesday edition of the locked on penguins podcast. I'm one of your host Hunter Hodes joined by my co's patch, damp and pad. I will say we do expect cuts to happen at some point today, at least the first round of cuts, year now halfway through your preseason games. The first regular season game is literally a week from today. I would assume that some of the prospects that really haven't played in preseason games yet, or maybe even some of the top prospects that have that what we know they're not going to make the team. I think could get sent back to a toe training camp or their junior teams, it would just make sense. Since there's only two more preseason games left, one on Thursday against Columbus. And then Saturday in Buffalo, that is a three o'clock start time on Saturday, the Thursday game is seven o'clock in Columbus final two preseason games. Wednesday in general is an off day for the penguins. So I think that again, that makes it I think even more likely that we do get at least the first round of cuts. Then the final round is probably not going to be until Sunday or Monday, something like that because after Wednesday, Thursday, we have the third preseason game Friday. It's

a legitimate NHL practice Saturday is the three o'clock preseason game in Buffalo. Sunday they practice again, and then they practice next week as well. And then they had to fill with Elfio. So again, not much time here. As I said, this is going to be over in the blink of an eye. You just kind of reading the tea leaves by looking at the schedule that's remaining with them being off today. We're recording this Tuesday night, but it's going to premiere on Wednesday. You figure that's a day where your fringe players, your junior eligible players are going to get sent back, whether it's to the NHL or to their junior teams. They'll make some cut downs. Then you figure Thursday's game against Columbus will be to use one of my many cliches that I use here on Locked On. That'll be the last chance to saloon for a couple of these fringe players to make an impact and try to make their mark to make the team. And then you figure Friday, you'll probably do another round of cuts a little bit just to get everything down. Then Saturday against Buffalo, that is

probably your dress rehearsal game where you're going to see most of the NHL roster with maybe a couple of other fringe players still sprinkled in that they want to get one last look at. And then probably by Monday or Tuesday, you're going to have your final opening night roster that you're ready to go for when they head to Philadelphia. So I do think that this being a shortened preseason, this being a shortened training camp, there have been some players making their mark. There have been some players that they haven't really done a whole lot to state their case. I do think after the preseason game, I think this will sound kind of silly. This is more maybe wish casting than it is reality. I wouldn't be surprised to see the rock twins hanging around for another day or two. Just because they played well enough and I think that I don't want to say that they don't have anything

left to prove at the junior level because they do. They need to go there and dominate again. But I do think if you're Kyle Dubis, if you're Dan Mews, you can look at the two of them and go hang around for another couple days. Get an idea of what late training camp is. We're still going to send you back. You're still going to have to develop, but they did a lot of positive for themselves against the Red Wings. And then on the other end of it, I wouldn't be shocked and you kind of hinted at it in the last segment that maybe on Wednesday, that's when they shake Tommy Galvest's hand and say, hey, we'll see you in a few months when you come to Wilkes Bear for their stretch running their playoff. But I would not be shocked at all if we see the first round of cuts starting today. Yeah. And I don't think it's going to be like a massive, massive amount of amount. Excuse me. I just think it's going to be like first round, trims the roster a bit and then you might get a second round before the final preseason game. And then early next week, I think you'll kind of be around, you know, that 27, 28 mark and then they'll make their final round

and get it down to 23. If I had a guest right now, they might go 14, 7 and 2 going into the season, even with, you know, injuries. Well, someone like Blake Lazada is still weak to wait. They might even put him on an IAR to start the season. If he's not going to be back for at least a little bit to start. But you're probably about the rock twins with interesting patch. Do you think they can maybe get another preseason game on Thursday, just for the hell of it? Like that'd be interesting, I guess. But I feel like they've already shown what they could so far. But I guess it couldn't hurt if you want to give them one more game. I think you brought up a point there that I also think kind of works in their favor. You've got three injuries now. Yeah. That kind of even though they're all day to day, I do think it's three players who, while two of them are still jockeying to make the team in Coïvenin and Brzo, and we obviously know Ben Kindle is going to be on the team. And then I also forgot Blake was odd as well. So that's four injuries. But we all know you have two players who you know

we're going to be on the NHL roster two are still fighting for a spot. I think that can also work in their favor to the point where the team can just go, you know what? Let's give them a little bit more of professional experience before sending them back. The injuries open that door for them. And it's you're not going to go into it with any expectation. You don't go into it saying they need to go out in this third preseason game and dominate. They need to be great. It's just go out there play your best do what you can do. Let's see what you got. And then we send you back. Yeah. So we'll see if they get into that game on Thursday. We'll see if they survive the first round of cuts. If we do get some on Wednesday, which we expect, but hey sometimes the penguins are weird about this stuff. But now do it for the Wednesday edition of the Lockdown penguins podcast. Thank you also much. Take of the time to listen to slash watch this one. Pat night will be back with a fresh episode of free wall on Thursday previewing Thursday's game against Columbus. The roster will be out by then. So we'll get to discuss who we're really looking forward to watching in this game.

And also if there's any cuts, of course, we will react to that as well. And then on Friday, we'll recap Thursday's game and get everyone set for the final preseason game on Saturday. And then on Monday, we'll recap that preseason game. And we'll start getting everyone ready for Philadelphia on Wednesday. Our first game preview is coming up a little later on that weekend. We'll have our bowl predictions episode as well. So that'll be fun. We'll predict if they'll make the playoffs and all that good stuff.
