About this episode

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, reportedly personally lobbied California Governor Gavin Newsom ahead of a landmark AI safety bill for teens — a move signaling mounting pressure on the company as lawsuits pile up and rivals catch up. The legislation, set to regulate AI chatbots with age verification, content limits, and family lawsuit rights, reflects intense industry influence, including behind-the-scenes pushes to soften key provisions like memory retention rules and legal recourse. Despite tweaks, advocates call it a life-saving step — and Altman’s direct involvement underscores how high-stakes this regulatory moment is for AI’s future with kids.
