On this March 2nd in Birmingham, here's what is making headlines. Alabama Goodwill is rolling out a program called Book Works to deliver free books to kids in need across the state. It zeros in on Title I schools, head star programs, and neighborhoods where families lack books at home. The goal is to spark a love for reading early on. Donated books from Goodwill stores and drop off spots get sorted, cleaned, and prepped by volunteers. Then, those same volunteers head to day cares, heads starts, and elementary schools for fun reading sessions before giving the books directly to the children. Studies show early literacy plays a huge role in brain growth, self-confidence, and future school performance. Kids who get read to often and have books around inter-kindergarten ready to learn and tend to thrive long-term. Goodwill has backed literacy efforts for years now. In 2023, they work with the Scottsboro Public Library on a big community book drive and helped families get library cards. Just a year later, they handed out 1,500 books

to groups like the Birmingham Public Library and several head star programs. The team is eager for more volunteers to store books, read aloud, or lend a hand in both ways. Anyone interested can head to the Alabama Goodwill website to sign up and join the effort. This DNN story comes to you.
