Aaron Glenn's Mistakes In Jets Overtime Loss

0:00It's the Mike Francesca podcast on the Bet Rivers Network. Hello again, everybody and welcome to the Mike Francesca podcast. As we come to you after the jets, over time, a defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers, the first words have to be what might have been. Okay. I know for jet fans, there's a lot here that unravel. They were clearly more competitive. If you look at the big picture, Green Bay is a good, but troubled team playing without top players right now, playing with some injuries and they had a couple they sustained early in the game today. It was an incredibly sloppy game, just like the weather. I mean, 27 accepted penalties, 14 for 134 for the Packers. Remember, 100 yards is seven points in penalties. 14, 134 for the Packers and they committed 17 jets accepted 14, 13, 156 for the jets.

1:05That's 10 points, at least 10 points worth of points they gave them just on penalties and including that play out of bounds, which pretty much since things. Here's what way I looked at it. With 17, seven jets, I wrote down, can the jets close against a good, but troubled team, which has been in the losing streak, which has not played well in fourth quarters, which has key injuries on both sides of the ball or suspensions. And the answer was no. Now I don't want to beat on Glenn, but let's be honest. We didn't handle the end of the game. Great. I'm not going to get on third and fourth and one. They believe with their offensive line, even though the Packers had shown that they had taken advantage and were now controlling a line of scrimmage, I'm not saying that that

2:11was wrong to make those play calls. They don't work. They're always wrong. They just believe they can line up and move the ball a yard or two if they have to. They couldn't on third down. They got one on fourth down. They got zero. So they weren't able to do that. The offensive line didn't come through when they needed it to come through, but where Glenn really messed up two folds. One, and he got lucky with this one. He allowed the Packers to control the end of the game clockwise, and he didn't have to. All he had to do was call time out and leave anywhere from 30 to 25 seconds on that clock. And the Packers couldn't have screwed around. Instead you allowed them to manipulate the clock to where they could have done something and won the game in regulation. There was no reason for that. You had time out, you ability to do it, you could have done it, and then manipulated it. Oh, I would have had trouble. No, no, you could have still taken a knee at the other end of the field that Packers couldn't

3:13do anything about that. So the bottom line was you allowed them to handle the end of the game for no reason. You gave up your advantage there. And then we can argue this. I'm not saying that there isn't any logic or any case where you would not, where you would take the ball and overtime. But the way this is played, I don't want to take the ball and overtime. I want to kick off. I want to kick off and play defense. And on that kind of field, with the Packers not really having a running game, not really a good running game, and love, you know, maybe hurting. I would have played it that way. I would not have taken the ball first. Okay, I prefer to kick off. Now again, like I said, there are certain, if you have a team that believes it can move

4:19the chains, you control and believe that you can have a very long drive, you then are in control of the clock. In overtime, where even if you don't score, you punt them down and then you can get the quick less score. There are times, maybe your defense just had a very long drive against it and they're exhausted. All right, then you might think of taking the ball, but that was not the case here. I would not have taken the ball. Would have kicked off. So Glenn again, but he wasn't the only culprit here. The bottom line was that Jets had to show you that they were good enough to close out what I would call a good but trouble team. A team that has suffered a bunch of losing is without its best player is having major injuries

5:21and big problems on the offensive line. Playing on a sloppy field without their key running back, without their big pass Russia, although they show a show they can still run rush the pass of the last two weeks. The question was, you knew the Packers would come at the end of the game. You knew the last minutes of this game were going to be tough. There was no question about it. You were going to have to make a play and the Jets weren't good enough to make the play. On third and seventh, when they punted the ball back, would five and change left? They played very safe, played it underneath. The Jets didn't want to expose the football. Now you want to say they didn't have enough faith and Smith. It's fair to say. They played when they had chances to change the game with the first down on a couple of

6:24occasions, they chose to be ultra conservative. That's the way they decide to play it. You want to get on them for that? Go ahead. Play-qualling when it doesn't work is very easy to jump on. Do I have a problem with them running it on fourth and one? I don't. If you're good enough to execute the play, so be it. They weren't. The Packers made every play. The Packers took over the game late. They took over the game defensively. They took over the game offensively. They turned around and took the 17-7 game where they were playing miserably, where they were making mistake, the mistake where they committed a million penalties, where they had drops, where they had all kinds of problems. The bottom line is they and they turned a ball over and gave it just a huge advantage. They took the game back over both sides of the ball and turned the 17-7 deficit into a

7:29overtime win, or when they desperately needed. Now if you're looking big picture and you want to be a wide-eyed optimist jet fan, you can sit there and say, hey, they're one-on-one. They beat Tennessee, which today extended the Eagles to the final seconds where the Eagles stuck at the end zone and beat them, but they were beating them with a couple of seconds laps in the game. They win, but they were more competitive and they played a green Bay team that has ability. That blew a game last week. They should have won and Minnesota came back in one this week against the Bans. So they were more competitive. They didn't come in here today and get the doors blown off. They showed you at one-on-one that they've had a good win and a tough loss.

8:33Or you can say, hey, we had an opportunity here. We were three or four times one big play away from winning this game and we weren't good enough to do it. We weren't able to make the play on either side of the ball that had to be made. We couldn't close and the answer is you couldn't. And your head coach didn't help you. Like I said, I'm not going to get into his play calling. If I was going to the lack of aggressiveness on the third and seventh, now you want to tell me that you got rushed and you had to go underneath and he was looking for someone to break a tackle. All right, fine. The third and fourth and one, you know what, that's the bread and butter. That's who they think they are. And they didn't get it done.

9:34And that's the place that are going to decide those games. You have to step up and make plays on those kind of games. When if you're going to close a team out, you're going to have to get the conversion that closes them out. The conversion that takes two and a half, three minutes more of the clock, the conversion that changes things. They just weren't able to do that. And then again, I didn't like the way he coached. He got away with coach in the end of the game in a very really, a man that showed that he still has work to do. He got really out of Fox there pretty badly. And it couldn't have been worse. And I didn't like, and I got to admit, I got a bunch of attacks from people who are like, why are you taking a ball? Why are you taking a ball? Why are you taking a ball? First guess.

10:34Okay. And I agree. I agree with all of them. I don't like taking the ball there. I think you have some examples when it makes them sense the way the game has unfolded. If you have a certain type of team with a very, very reliable offense, with a very reliable quarterback who you know can get their down conversions. If you have Josh Allen, you know, and his offense, you're taking a ball. If you have someone who can convert first downs like they're going out of style, you're taking the ball. Because then you're going to control everything. You're going to control the clock especially. You're going to make sure that you have the ball for the bulk of the overtime period, which is why you would take the ball first because you believe you can keep the ball for the bulk of the period. If you don't think you can do that, you don't take the ball first.

11:40If you're going to get sacked on first a second down, well, it wasn't too smart. I had the idea to take the ball first. And they have an improvement that the type of team that should be taken on the ball first. I'm not saying that their offense might not be on paper better than the defense, but it's not the kind of offense yet. And late in the game, the packets had clearly shown that they were now really controlling the line of scrimmage. So I really think it depends. I think it really depends on your perspective. So I understand a lot of Jeff and his are going to be upset that they didn't get the two and all here. They could have won this game. They had a ten point lead. They blew the game. They can't win these game. And it'll be angry with that. So the guy says, hey, we have shown a lot of improvement.

12:46And remember, special teams were a strength. And then special teams delivered a big knockout punch in this game by Skymore, knockoff that whatever it was, 62, 64, 66. I don't remember exactly what it was, 60 something, your punt return. Which obviously made things rather easy. I thought there was some, first of all, the game was a mess. Let's be honest. A game played. Now early in the season, these guys are coming off the summer. They're coming off a period where they're in heat when they're playing or when they're practicing. They are not playing much. They are not yet ready for these kind of things as far as slipping and sliding because of the turf or the elements. You saw drops. You saw mistakes. You saw slipping and sliding.

13:46You saw people changing their shoes. All the stuff that goes on the first time you deal with elements. These elements weren't bad enough where they should have been a major factor. Golden had an early drop. It was on him. Jets had some drops on them. Hold onto the ball. This wasn't a monsoon. This wasn't something where that should have been pronounced. It is because it's early in the season. This was a sloppy mess. When you have 27 accepted penalties for almost 300 yards of penalties, that is a game that has been pretty much controlled. Hey, I don't know why the Jets bothered to show single high at all because every time they seemed to show single high from what I could tell, he went over the top to golden and I'd drag him down and I'd tell you something. When he went late for everything on golden and he overthrew him and they didn't call

14:49the flag, that was very, very close to pass in the Ferris because Zepak did not do anything except grab the grab golden and swing him around. Now he wanted to say the ball was overthrown fine but he is a jet. He is someone who can really run and a couple of times he sort of single high. One time he missed it the other time he got pass at the Ferris calls on him because he out ran both times. They went lights out. Hey, you see single high go. Single high go deep to golden, that's it. Now they've gone to keep the golden probably six, seven times already the season and I think they've connected on one. The first week I think they got one. I think they're talking to them like 13 times in the Minnesota game and I think you got

15:51one deep when he caught some balls. Today he didn't catch any balls, the lady caught a couple and they could court fourth of the game, might have caught three and they caught four but you know they target him a lot more than that. They just haven't really connected with him yet. That will get better for them going forward. And they they have talent. I mean let's be honest. They are when they're on their game and they haven't been on their game in a while since Paulson got hurt and left. They and their missing key guys, they're a good team. They were physically talented. They were a playoff team. So they just clearly were playing the high level club today. You got to take that into account and there were a lot of packet fans in that building. I know this whole white out thing this week and this and that. The white out thing was because they knew they were going to be a ton of packet fans in green and there was a ton of packet fans in that building because when Skymore made

16:55that run, I mean you could hit those fans. It was like it was a home game. You heard the fans, I mean I don't know how many were in there today but they were a lot. And I don't know if it was now I was watching on a I don't want to say what's streaming I was watching on a different connection today. But so I didn't watch on Fox local. I watched on Fox but it wasn't Fox local so it was coming through with different venues why I'm saying that. Was the local Fox broadcast getting the Minnesota game for a ton of the fourth quarter like I was getting on my what where I was watching it. Because I was they had the audio for the Minnesota game on for like three or four times for extended days while they were playing the jet game.

17:57I don't know if that was good but I didn't have it on local channels so I don't know if I was watching on a different feed so I don't know if that was the case on the local channel. I got a feeling it was but I'm not positive. Someone's going to have to tell me that. Now more on the jets in a second but I want to get through a couple of things here. It was a very odd day today. First of all points were except for the Carolina Panthers who just running ran rough shot over to Falcons who turned the ball over for touchdowns and turned the ball over and we're just awful. That game was 34 to 3 points from pretty much hard to come by today. The Saints came back and beat the Ravens though. The Saints got beat on a touchdown like should have gotten credit for last week and they lost it over time when they went for a two point conversion in Detroit. They opened up in Detroit in Baltimore. Nobody had a tough opening for two weeks than them and they turned around and beat Baltimore

18:59coming from behind. They're getting superb quarterback play. They're one in one and they are. We talked about them being a very improved team. They are a very improved team. Now the box game was suspended. I'm figuring because of thunderstorms. That's what I figured was either that of power as I'm not sure which one but I'm just figuring thunderstorms as the box would drive in down and forward to Browns. The Titans made a big run back on the Eagles and then the Eagles came back and it took to lead and the Eagles came back and won it. The Saints winning in Baltimore was big. I'll take the hit on this one again. I thought this would be the year that the Texans would not have this huge September malaise that they have every year and get off to this awful start and they were just awful today. Like a lot of people out there, I took Montgomery.

20:01We have this family fantasy week. I took Montgomery. I played him week one. He's really my third back but I played him in a flex position and I got 20 points like a really smart guy. I played him again this week and he wasn't playing. If they have in a huge week last week. So I'm looking to see if he's hurt and he's not. Then I saw that there was this outrage from people who I guess had played Montgomery who were all nuts that he wasn't playing today. I don't know why did he do something wrong in the game early? Did he have an argument with somebody? I don't know what he did but he got benched and they were awful today. I thought Houston would win and I feel stupid for picking them because I thought they would bounce back even though I had picked the Bengals to be in over this year. So I really couldn't lose on this one but still I have to admit that I didn't think the Bengals would win this game.

21:01Bengals schedules are very easy to get them in a lot of games as long as they keep borrow healthy. But I was surprised they'd win 26th the way they did today. And then the other one, and I don't want to bury the lead on this because I don't know the extent of the injury yet. But we all know that Williams went down for the Bears. The Bears, after last week, put up three points this week. Is it all that in the NFL that if a team scores 50 a bit against them next week and if a team score zero, you bet on them next week. That's been a long time kind of a lifestyle kind of thing. But there's a perfect example. The Bears have that a huge game last week. Everyone's talking about the offense until they score three points. I didn't watch any of that game when I'm going to figure Minnesota blissed a lot because that's what they do. So I'm going to figure they did they win that game. 9-3. He gets a non-contact injury. I know the initial thought was a hamstring pull but now there's been rumors that it might

22:04be more serious than that. So the Bears who a lot of people were on the really on the Bears bandwagon after last week, they not only lose this week, Williams gets hurt. To what extent you got caught it off, non-contact, you know those non-contact injuries are always a bad situation. To what extent I don't know yet. We'll be watching that obviously. Very much this afternoon. And the other story is that Ernie Corsi, the longtime NFL figure, Giant General Manager, a guy that was a, you know, a mainstay as any giant person that was in those days. But a mainstay on the Mike and the Man's Look show. He used to love to come on. First of all, of course, he loved sports.

23:06He loved to talk sports. He loved to talk, tell stories. He loved to talk about Johnny and Nidus. Johnny and Nidus impacted him dramatically. Ernie Corsi, who was the Giant General Manager from 98 2006. May the Eli Manning trade. I remember that he told Dog and myself, hey, there's three quarterbacks out there that are going to get taken high. I'm very happy with two of them. If I get Manning and Rothisberger, I'm happy. I don't really want to rib it. That was what he told us. I think tonight before the dreft, it might have been the afternoon before the dreft. We talked to him a lot. We talked to him a lot on the air. We talked to him a lot or off the air. He was a good sports guy. I like to talk sports. He liked to tell stories. He liked to be conversational. He was a football lifer.

24:08Nice man. Nice man. Passed away today at the age of 84. Had a significant, very significant NFL career. So to his family and those who were close to him are forced and pressed as he passes away at the age of 84. So earlier, of course, one of their giant architects through the good days. I don't think this is saying anything at a school. Anyone who was around the giant said time knew he was not in favor of hiring Tom Coffler. But even Tom today, and Tom is a very good man. Even in Tom's comments today, he said all positive things. Ernie was not in the beginning a big Tom fan.

25:11And as we know, Wellington hired Tom. And Ernie really wanted to hire someone else, which is not going on. Ernie, he might have hired someone who was as good a better. The point was, it took him a while to get on the same page with Tom. And they did. Which is saying something about both of them. And one of the things he always preached. He used to say this all the time, you can never have too many quarterbacks on your roster. You can never have too many good quarterbacks in the room. So even if you have quarterbacks, if you like a quarterback, bring them in. You know, if you have the way with the loan, you don't need something else. The bottom line is he would collect quarterbacks.

26:13He was a big believer you can never have too many people who could play that position. And a lot of that was going back to his early years with the United. Who he obviously loved and respected. If you are a football, someone who knows some of the history of football, you know that the father of the modern position, quarterback position is John United. And Ernie had a very, very close relationship with John United. So Ernie, who was the Cleveland Browns. Was a sports lifer. Was a football lifer. Was the Browns general manager, giant general manager. A very much respected NFL figure that passed away today at the age of 84. As far as the jets, like I said, the more short term jet fans are going to say, 17, 7,

27:25why can we never do it? Why can we never, you know, deal with prosperity? Why can we never get over the top? And that's fair. That's a winnable game. At that juncture, they were one big play away from winning that game. They didn't make it from there on the Packers made every big play. They came from behind. They made the plays they had to make offensively. They made the plays they had to make along the defensive front. And they made the wise decisions. They beat the jets in every possible way. They beat them offensively, defensively, they beat them on the coaching lines. They beat them everywhere in the end of the game. And those last eight minutes of that game regulation and then all the time they beat them in every way. And that's why they turned the 17, 7 deficit into a win. Was this a winnable game?

28:25Yes. Did they lose to a better team? Yes. Did they improve the after two weeks? Yes. Does that make you feel any better tonight? No. And it shouldn't. And it shouldn't. Today, you know, the league to me seemed, you know, there were weeks when the league seems to all fold into where everybody's in the same general area. That's how I felt about the league today. Sometimes you see teams and say, boy, it's just better. And then sometimes you look and you think everybody's just in the middle of this tangle. And today, that's the feeling I was getting. But clearly, you know, they're just.

29:28I was doing things far more professionally far more competitively. And they easily could be two or no, they're not what they could be. That might not make you feel good, but that's the bottom line. Now before they get a couple of teams come to town that they can beat. They're going to face a couple of teams. Now, the bears. They're going to face them now, probably without their quarterback. Lions and the bears coming up. And the bears I would think I'm not going to have their quarterback. I don't know the extent yet. We don't. Show you how many, you know, keeping the quarterbacks upright in this league makes such a big difference and look how many already have gone down in just a couple of weeks. You know, we were about 11 plays in before sand on one down. And he's not playing again today.

30:28I think Seattle was up seven, nothing less than that. So, but he's not playing again today. And he probably won't play week three. I think they feel he'll be back after that. But again, one week at a time. And the league games, anything jumping out. Cowboys are up 16, three. Nine is about to go up 14, three. And the charges of seven seven with the rate is and the Broncos are losing again. You know, I expected the Broncos to rebound the day against the Jaguars. I like the Jaguars. I like their coach. You know, they wanted him to coach the jets. But and I like Chevrolet once always have. I still thought the Broncos would really bounce back today. We'll see if that happens.
