0:00for the hotline we go welcome in for browns punner curt managing director at the oswald companies are good buddy davis astonill for the season debut of risk versus reward uh... d z where do we find you right now you know what i am actually working in the office and uh... very excited to be back on the show for another risk versus reward series this year and and i'm understanding that you have something going on after as well do you do you do you know coaching work you have to whistle back on buddy yet but the old coaching head on coach in first and second graders uh... in a fall uh... season called a little fwc so we're we're having a good year so far we're having fun are we are we flag or we full tackle uh... second first that we're still in flag uh... tackle modified i think goes third and fourth and then full tackles this is it's not so well we're getting there little guys are getting there you got any trick plays

1:00kids love trick plays man and you never know if the competition's listen to this i got a uh... smart already talking like a coach that's right i think we're talking to the fanski here not getting anything what a job at a you buddy that that was fun that was fun down in tampa on on sunday what did you make of the performance uh... you know it was great to see you know when uh... to get to one and one uh... thinking about this either day when i was a rookie brine billock was my coach out in baltimore there always remember him huddling us up before the season start and said if you can win at home and split on the road your playoff team and so when you think about it you're going down the south to warm games against jacksville and tampa to really respectful teams you leave their one and one i mean i don't think you can be that disappointed but they have a a range lay like that that i've never really been a part of i think uh... nathan you may remember this or bow back in uh... i think it was oh six

2:00wrote seven verses pittsburg opening day at home that hurricane kind of came up and we had a i think an hour and a half before the late of that game uh... that's the last time i remember anything like that so become back out you know getting after probably bit starting to get some soreness in your body and finish that game was great to see it was great to see it was also great to see you know the quarterback to shanwatson play the way he did what did you make of that performance especially given all of the noise and the stakes that really seem to be surrounding him going into that game yeah hundred percent i mean for him to go out there's no secret i mean everybody is on social media and watch the news the espn i mean there was a lot of pressure on him uh... not only just on him but i think the browns that you never want to start a season o and two and ran to go down there and then on top of that your plan baker mayfield do they're at that's a whole storyline in itself and for him to go out and play like that i think you had a quarterback reading around a hundred and twenty two two touchdown passes

3:01i mean that that's the guy that really you know put the outside noise kept it outside and said hey listen i'm gonna go play my game and and i think we were all little pleasantly surprised by how well he played and now i just hope he can just continue to build on that yeah davin i i said this in the previous statement i mean it's a validator for taught to i mean this is this is six-year-old guy who's paid his dues and he's done everything he can to get to this point of finally coaching an NFL team and he finally gets the opportunity and one thing that we noted a lot through many camp through the summer through training camp taught did this his way i mean it was a physical camp it was a full camp uh... it was a lot of pads it was as much as could be allowed as much time is could be allowed and and he took a quarterback choice that for some of the fan base certainly wasn't popular and and we can all acknowledge that and i think that what you got sunday for taught was probably validation for him that the things that he did paid dividends you want to do risk reward that's kind of what he had this was here this was him that an entirely on

4:01himself and was the risk of the decisions he made worth the reward on this sunday down in tampa they were what do you what did you make a natural well you've in no time but just in terms of you could certainly tell the kind of what he says is what he feels and what he means is what he does uh... what what did that kind of angle of it mean to you yeah for before i get to that question i think one thing is important to know is you can tell time on can is really trying to take change the culture of the clemen brown uh... he's very open book he tells you how it is it's it's kind of refreshing after the years of kevin's defense key i'm sure the media love it uh... i'm sure it gives uh... outside you know fans media journalists all that analyst more insight into you know what's going on with the team and and really how he thinks that the head coach and to come off and a press conference about you know my comments comment about saying the browns of the browns and how he dropped the mic after that comment if you're a player in that locker room and i've been there many times to have a

5:02coach that that is that amped up and really believes in this team it's a guy you want to go on play for uh... so that right off the bat it's something i i think he is trying to do really hard i don't think he's doing it intentionally i think it's just how he is and i think that believes into the locker room uh... but for him to stick with the shan watson there's always been that glimmer of hope i think not only within the organization within the fan base i mean the shan watson at one time as we all know was was was one of the best quarterbacks and lee had the most potential had a great arm and i think based on top munkins experience with marge xin he knows what he can get out of the shan with his legs now we talk about his injuries we understand as a kill is a shoulder all those kind of things but you could see in tampa on sunday afternoon why his legs are so valuable i mean rush the ball seven times i don't know how many yards in maybe twenty two or twenty five yards but there was even plays that he extended i think there was a quick little drop off to the right side to run back to that i thought he was getting fact

6:05but because of his athletic ability he was able to extend the play and i think that's the little things that based on top munkins often that he knows he brings the table and i think sunday we really saw what athleticism to this often uh... can bring from a quarterback position and the first two third down conversions and the rounds were to work five of the last seven when it mattered the most were on the legs of the shan watson and we certainly we certainly saw that one thing you know from a risk of word standpoint is you you want to be able to run the ball and get the reward of wearing a defense down but when right now we're not able to do it you know what have you kind of seen in in terms of what needs to happen to get you know some push up front and get quenching on judge and's going yeah i knew you're going to bring that up because i was thinking about that risk or that for now and one i mean that that's a that's a that's a pretty that's a layup for me in the show right now that you know you know it you know judge tins obviously you know getting samson back hopefully and and and seeing that that the threat that they can bring but

7:06whenever you rebuild an offense a line like that uh... and bring pretty much five new starters some of those young guys it does take some time for those guys to gel i mean you know Trent Wilford told me i think i might have mentioned what time the show he says with the lack of preseason games now in the continuity you really don't you don't really get out of the preseason until until after game four uh... and so when you think about an office in line that that is rebuilt with guys from different teams and rookies and in all of that the communication the timing the jellie of that i do think takes time uh... and and i think over the course of the next probably two to four games i i would assume we're going to see improvement in the running game but that's kind of what i attribute to i think junk is the hell of a runner i think he's shift these powerful but until both that often to line starts jellie and getting on the same page you're going to see a little bit of clonkin is in the running game speaking of clonkin is big picture just around the league a wild first two weeks where we had record scoring in week one and then we had a complete in in some instances complete

8:09reverting back uh... chicago squad fifty nine in week one they scored three in week two and Caleb played most of that game you you mentioned this in terms of in the in the previous answer uh... dc but uh... one thing you said about you know kind of the preseason and kind of the way it's all taken it does kind of feel like right now these first couple of weeks is kind of a feeling out point for the league does it not yet for sure i mean i can't believe how many points chicago squad i mean for years they were the team that you know you didn't have a very dynamic offense but you you could tell with that offense that in the last year in kyle but they were capable of doing but you know you start getting film right in these defense of coordinators many of them are former head coaches they've been in the legal on time they know each other they know their tendencies and now they have filmed they can really study and they probably go back to last year as well but you know how much turnover happens within an organization year-to-year so now that it leads to one game film it allows them to understand some tendencies really were that often to coordinators trying to leave they have different strengths this

9:10year was the previous year there were more of a run team now they went for agents got some wide receivers and get to see that on tape so i think that trend is going to continue over the next probably two to three games because there's more game film comes available to these teams they're going to start being able to strategize or game plans even a little bit better so it doesn't surprise me week one how uh... you know i didn't think the rams were going to go down and reek week one right and then they come back and you know k that's the rams that that we expected so the first couple games i do think you get a little bit of feel for each other but as game film becomes available uh... these coaches are smart and they'll start using that to their advantage zest back in your day were you the holder on field goals i was so yeah so when you got a guy like on the reshmit who is now is not missense our game in new england a year ago is now made eighteen straight field goals does it come up is this discussed how do you as the holder how do you handle it when you've got a guy who's on a heater like on the reshmit

10:13yeah i think they have a field of kicker that when you watch the game other slide run tv you just automatically first thing you think is it's gonna go through you don't get nervous for years a hundred percent years and and and everybody listen to show you know i'm talking about you for years lead enough to smith you're just like uh... come on k your car come on this is a kid that after that initial game last year the first game i believe he came back and just went on a tear and you start building confidence in yourself cori borca in him now are working in you know the second year together they're comfortable and really don't say anything um... there are a lot of times whether it's j feely maps over j you know filled often if they felt they got into a right or a little bit off their game they would break it down to one simple thing so they weren't thinking about three or four different things and i remember going up in games with j feely maps even filled often what they always told me was hey remind me to take a short first step because a lot of times with taking and punning when you get out of rhythm you

11:13take a first step that's a little bit longer it could just be a like a quarter of a yard longer well then the second step is naturally longer based on momentum and so short step kind of kept them grounded keep their hips underneath them and they could push through the ball uh... like they were used to in practicing so i you know sometimes that's where a holder comes into play that they can kind of see those tendencies and get those kickers to think about one specific thing focus on that and all the nerves all the negative thoughts kind of go away and they they just you know focus on a singular uh... thing they do so i remember many games include the stadium is looking up at those guys they they feel short-step short-step to give me a nod we kicked the ball and then you know obviously he make it we give each other a hug but those are the little things that holders can do the health kickers just kind of you know nothing too much did get you out of here on this one but he greatly appreciate your time we at the home opener here on sunday it looks like for now we're gonna have good weather we've been brutal for about i don't know six months it feels like but we're gonna have good weather it seems

12:15but is a home opener like as a player uh... you've been through a bunch from here what is it like going down to the lake and and and kind of have that home opener down down down there it it's uh... it's awesome uh... it was a little more special for me because when i came over from Baltimore no six uh... my first game against the saint on the home opener in that year and i was always a dream come true for me to run out of that tunnel being a fan going municipal state with my dad and brother growing up uh... so for me i still i still get the chills thinking about the time i ran off the tunnel but when you come home uh... you got a couple games under your belt you're feeling a little bit better about about yourself after week two and knowing that you're at home you're back in your comfort zone your routines a little bit more consistent that you're used to you kinda you kinda get more confident in the way you're gonna come out your your momentum comes up and the players really start feeding off the crowd and there's nothing like playing a home game the NFL there's really not especially when you're playing good football
