I don't know, award night fans. Horror fans. Horror fans. For another episode of Spooky Movie Squad. Yeah, a bunch of horrors. The horror movie podcast reviews the best. The worst thing between a horror. One movie at a time. I'm a host, Otis. Tonight I'm joined with the Spooky Movie Squad and that's quite consistent. Hi. Emma. Oh, woohoo. And Mike. Stories told of my death have been greatly exaggerated. So sit back and relax and enjoy our talk about the year in review. We're doing the spooky awards, ladies and gentlemen. We can talk about our favorite movies and at least favorite movie and all stuff in between. And we're going to prep ourselves for the eighth annual Halloween screamathon. Cleansing our palate. I guess hit that music.
It's time to listen to the spooky movie squad. And he's been here because everyone this is episode hell. I don't know. 518 of the Celestri's podcast and the, I don't know which number this is on the spooky awards. Hell, let's say it's the eighth annual because we didn't do it at the beginning, but I don't care about numbers here. The eighth annual spooky awards. So this is where we task each other with going over five of our favorite films over the year, 71 films. And we're going to talk about the one movie that we didn't really like. And then talk about movie that absolutely surprised us. So to get this bad boy started, Micah, please indulge us, educate us with the five films that you absolutely adored this year. All right. So this is definitely a no particular order. I know I haven't been around much this season.
A lot of life stuff and a lot of life stuff still happen. And so hopefully once the life stuff starts evening out, then I'll be more alive to do this or you know, I could, I might just look like a politician being pushed around in a chair. I don't know. We'll see what happens at the end of the journey. Okay. Anyway, so five of the movies that I did get to see that I loved in no particular order, but still at the top of my list is cargo. That movie came out of nowhere for me. It's the right genre. It was the right like setting to have a small cast just zombies and perfect execution. It was incredible. And I don't have enough good things to say about it. So cargo is on there as a throwback the descent.
I'm pretty sure I picked that one when it came up. I absolutely adore that movie. I've loved it since I was a wee bitty teenager and I still love it to this day. You were never wee or bitty. Hey, look. You always are tall back. A man can dream. I guess. Okay. Let's see. Definitely sinners. Oh, man. Centres is a good movie. Yeah. That one goes without saying that that was just incredible. That was three. Right? The long walk. Oh, my God. Such a good movie. Oh, absolutely loved that one. That's my top four. All right. So my top five films of this year. And I'm sure this movie, I'm almost positive this movie made it to everyone's list. And that's cargo. What a fucking banger of a movie cargo was so goddamn good.
Next is sinners. Like. I can't I couldn't even explain it when we did the podcast of how much I love that film. And like it's just so fucking good. My next one is I'm sure on Otis's list because he watched it like 87 times. Queens of the dead. What a great movie. And then the deep dark, which was the French mining. Like demon cursing that movie was fantastic. The scares were impeccable. The art direction for it was great. Excellent film. And then. For fifth place, I have a tie because I could not decide between these two films.
And it is a two way tie between the blackening, which is one of the funniest horror movies I have ever watched in my life. And then wait until dark, which is an old 1960s Audrey Hepburn movie, where she plays. A blind protagonist having to deal with these basically con men who are trying to steal something from her house. Because drugs and is Audrey Hepburn did excellent. There's like a kid in it that helps her out. That did excellent. And the way that they. The way that the blind main character deals with the situations that arise in that film are just fantastic. It's very much like these people trying to gaslight this young blind woman and her just like no, I heard you like click the thing like too too many clicks because I know exactly how many clicks it was supposed to go because I'm blind.
You're fucking with me and I'm not having it and it was it was great. Okay, we'll get into my my top five here. Like Katie said, like Mike I said cargo. That movie we all hear in Allentown. On this spooky movie extravaganza that we do love us some fucking zombie movies apocalyptic absolute madness. And occasionally we love a good movie where shit never resolves. Cargo fucking nailed every single one of those things and absolutely emotionally wrecked all of us. Like I don't fucking know what cocaine they put in that movie, but more please.
Sinners was great. Absolutely loved that movie. Queens of the dead was a banger. I watched that a couple of times and I will probably continue to watch it over and over and over at a great time with it. And my last two. We were talking about potentially making if a month. Had every single movie was super super good. Just have the whole month be one of the top five. But I'm going to choose to from our horror horror whatever foreign horror thing. So come was so good. It was so 1408 meets the shining meets like all the shit and I loved it so much. And then deep dark deep dark was so fucking insane and so well done.
I absolutely love that movie. If I want to be creeped out, I'm going to watch that movie repeatedly. So yes, those would be my top five Otis laid on us. So knowing the emotion filled. Cry babies that I work in love. I knew I didn't have to put down cargo because all of these bombs would have put cargo in there. So I know I didn't have to do it. Cargo is a banger, but I didn't have to put that one down. But I went with I'm surprised. But I think Katie she's going to talk about this one a little bit later. But I put down Frankie Frico. If you know me, I absolutely adore puppets in films. It makes me laugh when the puppets do normal things. When the puppets get hurt and die and beat up people. It makes me giggle. I am a child. I am a tiny, tiny child.
It's just about these puppet demons coming to terrorize this man's life. That's the movie. And it was really fucking good. I put down Hokem. Am I and I, we both agree? Hokem is an amazing film. Like I said, it's just a ghost story where the guys try to figure out why this lovely lady died. And all the crazy things that comes with it. There's a witch. Why? I don't know. She's just there. And it was really cool. I put down the movie weapons. So that was a, um, ooh, that Craig are film. You remember from the white kids, you know Abraham Lincoln? Yeah, he fucked up. Yeah, he fucked up. He makes horror movies now and they're absolutely amazing. During October, we are going to do Resident Evil. I believe that comes out in like a week. So I'm very pumped about that movie. Apparently it's really fucking good. But the weapons, a classroom, all the kids disappear and the teacher is blamed for it.
And we see Thanos is like, where's my son? And then they team up and they figure out that there's a fucking witch in town. And she took all the kids and she's trying to do bad things to keep herself alive. And then it was the coolest ending. All the kids trace her down and just stomper the fuck out. The movie was awesome. We, I had so goddamn good. I wish I could have saw it in a theater. I think it would have been even more of a banger, but I'm happy I got to see it. Number four is incident in a ghost land. We talked about this a long time ago. This is a Guido pick. I always seem to pick one Guido film because there's one in there that's an absolute banger. This one, two sisters, they're dealing with killers in their home and their mom saves the day. Hooray. No, she didn't because she dies and the girls have to work together to get free. It's craziness. There's a big chunk in the middle where the sister is an adult and she's like, man, I made it.
I made it through my shitty childhood. No, you didn't. You just made that up to make up for your shitty childhood and she has a survive. The movie was great. I was craziness. And my last pick, no surprise to anyone. I love anthology films, VHS Halloween. Some of the best shorts that I've seen ever in them. One of my favorites was when this guy, he makes a scary, what is it called? Where do people walk through it? It's like a scary haunted house. But he gets a freaky cursed record and he plays it and everything comes to life. It was one of the craziest fucking things ever and they got the guy that has worked on scary movies for decades to work on this one. It looked really good. Some of the coolest shorts ever in a VHS movie. It made me smile the whole way through.
I think this is fucking great. And they're working on another one this year. And it's going to have guarantor and muppets. So next pick next year. I can tell you that, you know, real fucking quick. But no, I, this was a really fun year. And I'm surprised that I didn't just pick all from October. Usually I pick a lot of crazy ones. Only one from no two. Two from Halloween. So I'm very surprised. But we spaced it out pretty good. There were some really good honorable mentions out there. But, you know, actually at this point, if anyone has any honorable mentions, I'll do mine real quick and then we'll go around. But monster squad. Very cool movie. Kids taking on the money and the wolf man and Dracula. It's something about kids with guns and weapons. It's just fucking awesome. Smile too. An absolute banger of a film. Where it's just like a disease just jumps onto you know, have a week to try to figure it out.
Or you die. Bring her back. Another crazy film from a, I want to say a French director. The same one that did talk to me with the, with the haunted hand. This one, this mom is trying to bring her child back because they died. What happens when you make a little zombie that eats everything? I don't know. You fucking cause problems. My last honorable mention was the substance. That was what Demi Moore and her young version is very much a, felt like a cautionary tale about. I don't know, be yourself. But we get to see Demi Moore melt in real time. It was crazy and looked really awesome. Very one cool. Katie, do you have any honorable mentions? Yeah, um, Frank E. Freco was incredible. Um, Otis and I both love dumb puppets. And just it was hilarious. Um, the Chuck E show.
Yes, was incredible. It took us all month to finish to watch the whole thing. Uh, cause we're busy out here. So it took us all of the month we were doing Chuck E to watch it. But it was so freaking good. Like the way that it tied in all of the movies, the previous movies together. Um, and it is a fucking shame that it got canceled. Yeah, holy crap. It was like, it was so good. Um, and then my last honorable mention is silver bullet. Yeah. It's, uh, who's the kid in it? Uh, Cory Ham. Cory Ham. Or Philipman. No, no, hey, Cory Ham is a, um, paralyzed kid. And he has this badass electric wheelchair that is grandpa made for him. No, it's uncle Gary. You see, oh, crazy. Yeah, drunk Gary. You see uncle made for him that just goes super fast and it's called the silver bullet.
And, um, he's fighting where will a werewolf in his town, um, and trying to save, uh, his friends and other kids in town from being eaten by this werewolf. And it is just, I didn't expect it to be good because it's old. It's like from the 80s, like mid 80s. And it's kind of like, it's a little cheesy in that mid 80s way, but it was actually a really good little horror movie. And the way that they did, like the makeup on the werewolf was good. The kills were really good. The acting by the kids. There's like quite a few kids in the movie was also really, really good. Yeah, all around silver bullet was pretty pretty decent. Emma. Okay. Heretic. Yeah. Was fucking wild. Um, religions to hell of a drug friends. Yeah.
Bring her back was insane. Um, long legs was very unsettling. Yes. Um, I just, I remember for weeks after watching long legs, I was like, oh, I don't like it. I don't like it at all. Um, I can't wait to cover at the show. If I don't want to cover them, I have to kick those guys off to fight that, but right now such as racism and sin and Angie falling filming rights and let it lead to GOT The entirety of children's horror month was absolutely fucking adorable to me because I love Casper I love Frank and weeny and the other two I had never seen before and they were very silly So I was here for it So now it's time for the slacks award. This is the movie that absolutely surprised us because boy howdy a couple of years ago when
Guido put us on to a movie called slacks and he's like oh, it's a pair of jeans that are killing people I was like should you got me playboy? That sounds awesome But the majority of us were like okay, that sounds really stupid and then we saw a movie that was absolutely Amazing and had something to say message I was like damn Guido. He's like, that was good. I'm like I forget Guido Can find movies that are like wow, this is you know, it's that new layer kind of horror It was like you know vampires gentrification. It was like that and Also he can show us movies where there's ninjas and cannibals And that's the movie that's a scary movie. I forgot the name of it. Oh violent shit three You know the same man that can give us slacks and violent shit three at the same time Love you. I love you buddy. So now it's time for the slacks awards So my pick was love and monsters I
Remember hearing over the years this film called love and monsters and I knew one of the the Valentine's Day episodes I wanted to do it But I kept hearing that it's ashamed that they haven't made another one and then when I saw it I was like, fuck it's a shame to haven't made another one It's absolutely amazing film Everybody in the film wants to do another one. Please Lord. Please do another one. Like I said I was like I don't know taking a nap and I was like man I wish I had like a couple million dollars. They're like five movies that I would absolutely fund just to see the end And see the next one. Now you can fuck it makes money. I will be happy in the front row watching it They're like that movie lost like 20 million dollars though. This might but it was good As I walk off bankrupt But no loving monsters was an amazing film Katie what was your slacks award? My slacks award went to love and monsters. Yeah, yeah
I didn't really know anything about this film other than that it had Dylan Whatever his name is in it The main character is it McDermott? No, no, no, it's the kid who was in maize runner. Oh Shit. Yeah Yeah, I didn't know anything about love and monsters aside from the fact that that kid was in it. Oh Brian Dylan O'Brien was the main character and that Everyone that I had ever heard talk about this movie Shad on it relentlessly So I went in with expectations that were very very low typically when we get to Valentine's Day the movies that are made about love and horror are usually Well a lot of people don't like them. I actually really like the whole genre of like love horror
I think it's fantastic and it just like is this really cool blend of like juxtaposition and blend of like Evil and violence and also cute. She loves stuff And I thought that love and monsters did a really good job of that. It's one of the only It's one of the only films that we watched this year where I was Actually upset at the end that it Like bomb so bad and did not get a sequel because it deserved a sequel That film was so good Like the way that they dealt with the like apocalypse and the like the monsters and um Just the people finding each other again and creating these little civilizations like pockets of civilization throughout the world While they were dealing with this like insane monster situation was Absolutely incredible and they should have gotten a sequel and I was mad the whole time So yeah, my slacks award is going to
Love and monsters for sure Get Emma. Emma brought you. What's your slacks award? Well So I thought I had my slacks award picked until I was sitting here rereading the list like while we were finishing up the last episode of this last month and Because it is a pair of pants I am going to have a tie Between incident in a ghost land and love and monsters hell you because No, that movie really did come out of nowhere and I was like oh no like I need more but incident in a ghost land was so fucked up like High fucking five Guido that movie was so good The sisters were messed up. It was psychologically just unnerving
to a very high extent and the entire premise of them being dolls and trying to get out of it and then almost getting to the road and then Not and then seeing the cops and then the cops die and then everything starts over. I was like oh no Like I'm having second-hand PTSD through my screen right now and this is not great but those two movies I would say would be on my absolute recommend to anybody anytime that I probably would not have recommended if I didn't watch them So Yeah, they really did come out of nowhere with those two My slacks award is gonna go to handsome guys Just That might be one of my I don't know. I guess you can consider it cult classic films for me even though I know it's a remake
I totally get that but You know as far as doing it with a certain flair and having its own kind of personality and style I Was it it totally it totally did it for me I absolutely loved it and I hope people get to watch it especially with it being on to be nice and free. We like that um So yeah, so now it is time for our rubber award. This is the movie where we thought this year It just didn't do it didn't do it for us Did not work so Katie what was your rubber award this year? I'm sorry Gwito but 100 tears Was It was an assault to the eyeballs And the acting was terrible the clown shoes were terrible like everything about it
The of like just insane size of the weapons that the clown was using like It was all bad What did I even just watch we do Emma I second that motion It was quite literally like an iPhone filmed soft core porn followed by really awkward Like Katie said clown shoes and exaggerated weapon sizes and I'm like Size really does matter but not like that like What So yeah 100 tears that was uh Was a very interesting experience. Okay. Okay. I got I got my okay my least favorite My rubber award although I wish I could give it to a movie that like I don't know was a be list movie but I'm gonna give this one to uh until dawn Uh, that move
You know when when companies have a lot of money to do things and then they do crappy things with that money It just And that was probably my least favorite movie of all the movies that we watched all the few movies that I watched this season That one gets my rubber award I have I have trouble calling it the rubber award because I loved the movie rubber Yep In case listeners don't know Otis and I actually adore that movie um I watch it so I was mulling it over I had three films and I just could not Figure out which one disappointed me the most It probably would have to be Oh man probably Fear Street prom queen That one was such a step down from the trilogy that we got
Yeah, those three movies were probably some of the coolest Scary movies, but kind of for kids, but not for kids The story is for kids is kids trying to figure out a ghost story But every time someone died, oh the dude's graphic is fun Uh, it was absolutely awesome the second one with the red head from stranger things and there to camp and there's a Fucking Jason walking around Really amazing, but then we get a new one and they were like a fear street prom queen I was like fuck yeah part for it. Let's do it and Like the theme was awesome is back at that shitty ass school that should be shut down But then it just wasn't it's good as the other three It was really cool the the famous people they had in it And then and I don't know it was set up to be just a normal Scary movie like just a killer, but then at the end they want to be cute and be like Hey, you remember that remember that curse with Sarah fear Here's a little bit of that curse right at the end of the movie. I'm like fuck you man
There was no curse at all in the movie and they're like Curse see you next year and they ran away. I was like you dickheads But it just wasn't as good and it was very disappointing. I thought we were gonna get another banger It's just I remember Katie saying when we were talking about it It was supposed to be an 80s film like the theme music and everything She's like it didn't look like an 80s film It looked like a party where it's like it's 80s night and everyone kind of tried And I was like yeah, I didn't feel like an 80s movie the music was great And I was like it just looked like people trying to be in a 80s film and how If you make a period piece do it right or don't do it at all just make it monter day whatever But it's like oh, yeah, this is this is 1974 Everyone better look like they're from 19 fucking 74 or I'm gonna be mad Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, probably it was disappointing. It wasn't even that bad. I enjoyed it It just wasn't as good as the other ones and it made me mad
I will say honorable mention bad movies Megan 2.0 They went a different direction, you know, they went a little bit sillier and they made Megan a hero Which is fine. It's absolutely fine It just wasn't as good as the first one where she was trying to kill everybody It just It like I said it was another movie I enjoyed it just wasn't as good as the first one and that seems to be the reoccurring theme with movies that are just like not that good. It's not as good as the other one Wolfman The look of it great The change of the dad into the the werewolf Awesome Katie point out a couple of things like he started hearing New sounds when he was turning into a fucking giant dog. It was really cool his vision changed uh Like he would hear his family talk and it just turned into gibberish because I don't know he's a fucking dog. He doesn't know English anymore And they know what jump back in it was all cool. It just the wolf didn't look
Dumb it that was the worst part of it. It just didn't look really bad But I liked it. It just wasn't that good But like I said those three movies I was fighting about which one I didn't like the most But yeah, I mean, yeah, first street prom queen just disappointing man. Just made me sad and sad Okay, so it looks like Hundred tiers is the one that wins because two people said it or loses Yeah Guido I'm sorry, but but it's fine because we all talked about incident at a ghostland Like you know what I mean? I did really like you give and so bad Give and take my boy. I'm very excited for your next four movies. I know one's gonna be a fucking banger And that's it The other ones will be there. They'll be movies But I'm very excited. Okay. Uh, does anybody have anything else to say about season seven of this podcast before we get out of here Go watch the things they were super good
Uh, a really nice selection of films. I absolutely adored doing two spotlight series. We might do that for next year uh something about Finding these series and just going through them. I was very happy. We got to talk about Pernum activity and almost its entirety There are two more maybe we'll do them one day. It's just not that good But I thought it was really fun going through them just like the Chuck E films. They are absolutely Absolute bangers. Uh, cult of Chuck E man. Woo. We see Andy come back. It was fucking awesome And then the show Andy's there and he's killing Chuck E's left and right. It's fucking cool. It It's something about the Chuck E series and they're making a new one. So I'm happy to see that they're not done with Chuck E So I think we're gonna go with the two spotlight series for next year. Uh, I don't know if we're doing zombie or vampire for next year
I think it's zombie here I think I can't remember uh, and then we'll do some more Stephen King stories. We got a couple more before we are scraping the absolute bottom on the barrel And doing the ones where he was coped up and directing them We're all those to that point where he's like, I don't remember that movie. You're like well, you did it playboy But not very very excited. So You know with that that is the end of this season So this was episode 118 and the pocket in the book's out of the little site and the end of season seven of this podcast So the next episode you will hear will not be the beginning of the eighth annual Halloween spring of 9 No, it will be the short sleeve funny parts that I cut from this whole entire year
Anytime we said something and we angle a little too much and sometimes I cut it. I put it into this This little pocket Episode it's long it's like 45 minutes. We did a whole lot of giggling. So it's really fun I always go back and listen and it's so funny. It makes me laugh So that will be the next episode. I probably do not have too long I'm looking at the dates of everything So that one This will be probably Wednesday night The 30th Screameth on it. So we are gonna figure out what the first movie is I have a vote But we'll see if everyone else wants to do that first But I'm very excited. It's a really cool selection of films Whole lot of sequels that we haven't done yet. Five nights of Freddy's to we still haven't done it The black phone to we still haven't done it and I want to do that real fucking bad
We're gonna do obsession that crazy movie that made a lot of fucking money And we're gonna do the back rooms that crazy like fucking reddit post 10 years ago. That's now a fucking Million dollar movie crazy craziness I'm very excited. There are a lot of really cool new ones a couple of old movies I still want to do and show them friends and then we'll see if uh, I think the next terrifying is going to be a new year's movie. So We'll see Katie and I will do that probably probably be a Christmas movie. We'll see what happens But there's another terrifying happening another VHS Really cool selections. I'm very pumped. I'm babbling. It's really late. So From my cute little cat that ran off For Katie Emma and Micah. Thank you so much for listening this whole season And please strap in it filled the Jews Because we are going to start the eighth annual Halloween screamathon very soon. Not everybody
