Alright, it's Seahawks Week and it's a big Thursday at 8 a.m. Well, technically 8-11. We're a little bit behind. But Larry Krueger, Jesse Naylor, we're ready to go. We hope you guys are as well. We're going to talk some Niners. Get ready. Off and running on a Thursday, an action-packed Thursday. We got a lot going on today, and we started off the right way, the way we've been starting off a lot of these Thursdays the last month or so. Jesse Naylor's in the house. We're co-streaming on both channels. Hit like and subscribe if you're just finding your way into the room. The Niners in the Hawks, it's Hawks Week, are the Niners legit. You know, all the talk about their this, their that, the O-Lines improved. The parties the best quarter back in the league and all this talk. We're going to find out how much is real and how much is a facade on Sunday when the Niners travel to the Lumen field.

The site of their destruction, 41 to 6, whatever it was in the playoffs. The Niners are back. Jesse, we're back. Good to see you. Good morning. Is this going to be the same old thing like the last couple of games where the Niners can't score a touchdown. They only didn't have, I believe, Kittle and Ben Barch among their starters when they played in the playoffs. So it's not like, oh, they didn't have their cast. Well, they never cast on defense, but they had their cast on offense, and they scored six points. Is Kyle Shanahan going to be able to solve Mike McDonald's, you know, matchup zone and, you know, he's they went, they're 91% matchup zone right now. Is Shanahan going to be able to conquer that other than that who's going to score a touchdown. Yeah, the Niners are definitely get a score a touchdown in this game. And you got to remember, it wasn't just the playoff game. It was week 18 as well. You know, George Kittle was in that game. Unfortunately, he wasn't there for the playoff game, but they only put up three points. They lost 13 to three in that game.

And if you would have said the 49ers defense was only given going to give up 13 points going into that game out of said 49ers one, they were able to score a score 14 at least. But that just wasn't the case. You know, the 49ers have gone two straight games against this Seahawks team and haven't put up a touchdown. But things are things are certainly different. You've got some different players. You've added Mike Evans, Trent Williams didn't play in that week 18 game. He was there for the playoffs, but then George Kittle was out. So the 49ers offense is crazy. Is it sounds with some of the injuries they've had at receivers actually healthier than what it was in those other games against the Seahawks. But also there is something to what you said, which is, you know, can Kyle Shanahan solve the tests or the problems that Mike McDonald is going to present. And that's something that is the real question mark because Mike McDonald has done a very good job against Shanahan predating the Seahawks back when he was with the Ravens as defensive coordinator.

And, you know, obviously early on Shanahan got things done. But as Mike McDonald has built this defense the way that he wants it added in a guy like Nicki and worry. Things have become very difficult for Shanahan in this offense. And there's a multiple like a multitude of different reasons why and I'm sure we're going to get into those. But I have a reasons to be optimistic that the 49ers can and will win this game. Yeah, I mean, you know, Shanahan said it earlier this week. He's like, you know, we're a different team. They're a different team and it really is true. I mean, there's there's huge turnover in the NFL from year to year. And the Niners had the list of players that will be playing for them on Sunday that we're not playing for them when they just got destroyed up there. 41 6 in the playoffs is lengthy and includes a lot of really good players. Players like Mike Evans and Michele Williams and Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. You know, we could go on and on. There's a long list. I think it's like 10 or 12 guys. But 41 6 in the divisional round 13 3 and week 18 at Levi's the Niners and those forward black jerseys.

So that's 54 to 9 in the last two head to head matchups. And I'll throw the question to you. I kind of threw it to Shanahan yesterday. Why is Mike McDonald's matchup zone coverage is so difficult to attack? You know, what is the challenge for the 49ers? I mean, is it just making any easier? If Leonard Williams is playing or not playing, he's not 100% he rolled the ankle last week against the chargers didn't come back, but did practice this week at least limited wise. The expect to see, you know, Leonard Williams and is he the reason that the Niners struggle to mat to, you know, to cope with what McDonald's bringing? It's funny because I heard somebody on the radio the yesterday Jesse isn't driving around say, well, you know, McDonald, he loves to load the box and play man. And I'm like, wait a second. That is not really not that's literally the opposite. He's he's going. He's going.

He's going. He's going light boxes and they play 91% zone. So that's the reality. I don't know, you know, that just shows you the perception and the reality for maybe some casual fans. But what do you think? What is the is it is it their secondary? Is it the fact they take away the explosives? Is it the big boys up front? Why is this defense such a challenge? Well, I think there's a multitude of different reasons you're you're right about that. They play zone predominantly. They also run nickel predominantly way more than than the Lee average Lee averages around like. I think it's a 59% last year. They were at 76% nickel and they're able to stop the run out of nickel. This year, it's a little bit lower. It's around 69%. But I think a lot of that is because Nicki Minaj, Miss week one. Akuda has been out. He's back this week. This should be his first game back for the season. So Seattle's coming with with all their enforcements now.

Leonard Williams, it pick up a little bit of an injury. He is the key cog on that defensive line in my opinion. He is he might be the best interior defensive lineman in the NFL. And so if he's not out there that that helps the 49ers. We're not feeling sorry for the C. Hawks. I don't care who they're missing. The 49ers have plenty of injuries of their own. So whatever whoever Seattle has, they better find a way to win because the 49ers find ways to win. Now that being said, you talk about some of the matchup zone that they run very smart players over there. They know exactly what the 49ers want to do. They pass off routes very well. They communicate very well. But I think it really starts up front with what the C. Hawks do. When you look at Kyle Shanahan, the reason he's able to win against a lot of defensive coordinators is he knows how to put defenders and conflict and not just hey, we're going to run two routes your way, make you pick and choose like a lot of coordinators do or play callers do.

No, he actually looks at the rules. He's like, listen, if I know if we run this combination, they they have to do this based off those coverage rules. We're going to put those rules in conflict. And so it's almost this layer deeper this advantage that Kyle Shanahan has found throughout the course of the years. And he uses it to his advantage. Mike McDonald is the exact same way, but on defense. And he uses those rules against your offensive line. He knows your pass blocking rules. He knows exactly what looks to give you to make you think you're going to see something. He knows how you're supposed to react. And then he goes against that throughout the course of his plays. And then the other thing that has to be layered on top of this is that Kyle Shanahan offenses. He doesn't give autonomy to Brock party to change those protections. Now he can change the play. If he gets up to the line, he sees something different. You seem to have the helmet. That's can he switch into the second play that was called. But he does not change the protections. So Mike McDonald gets to see exactly what he wants. And then deploy a simulated pressure stunts, twists, pressures, whatever alignments along the defensive line to the right.

And then the defensive line to put the offensive lineman in conflict based off the rules that he knows that they have to follow when he shows them certain things. So I think that's really where it starts for Mike McDonald in this defense. I think one thing though is that it just seems like, and to me, it's like there's all these rankings that show the Niners offensive line is much improved. And you know, they're getting it done on first and second down. They're the best. They're in the most advantageous third down position of any team in the league through the first month. They're getting the third and it's like third and four, you know, and other teams are getting the third like Seattle, for example, they're averaging like third and seventh is their average to go on third down. So the Niners are, you know, on the first two downs are getting it done. For sure. And you know, the question is, can they get it done in this game? I think against Seattle, you know, Byron Murphy is just so strong. And then he's got this technique where he drops to one knee. And he just doesn't give any ground. So you can't really move him out of there. He's just on island. And then Leonard Williams. I don't know how you saw those numbers that Leonard Williams against doubles this year has like six pressures and two sacks against him.

Yeah, I mean, so he eats up double teams for lunch. And those two guys in the middle just are so strong. And it's like I do think the Niners, O lines improved. But you know, I was listening to Greg Coastel doing an interview yesterday, Jesse. And he's like, Hey, look, you know, the thing that came screaming off the film when you watch the two matchups late in the year is that the Seattle defensive interior was just too strong and manhandled the 49ers offensive interior. And is that going to change, you know, is that going to change? I don't know because it's, you know, I do believe the Niners are better, but are they it's a lot of the, a lot of the same players are they actually stronger than, you know, then they've been in the past. I, you know, maybe, you know, maybe Colby and Pune functionally are a little stronger than the Niners have been inside in the past. But I don't know. I mean, to me, that's a big one right there is I thought this week, you know, I don't know how you felt, but I felt like the Niners didn't get the fourth and one on the quarterbacks.

And he couldn't move and couldn't move DJ DJ Jones out of the A gap on a third and two from the 20 they ran McCaffrey and he got one and then they punted on fourth and one. And also in the A gap stoned right there by by DJ Jones in the Bronco front. So I don't know. I mean, I got to be honest, I'm a little nervous about the matchup with Brendel and I'm a little nervous when people are like, Brendel's great, you know, and I'm like, I don't know if Brendel's great. I think he's still very much underpowered. I think he's a good technician. I think he makes a lot of good decisions. We saw he had the nice block that that sprung, you know, Kittle on the screen. And he made a block and then he popped out and and and you know, just enough of the defender to clear that lane for George. So I think there's movement ability and there's intellect, but is there strength. You know, I don't know. He seems a little bit more aggressive with his hands. He seems a little more ornery. He seems like he's finishing his blocks better, but I'm very concerned that Brendel again is just going to get overwhelmed and you're going to see, you know, Byron Murphy in the lap of Brock, pretty a lot, you know, big part of the day.

How do you think that matchup's going to go? I wouldn't say I'm concerned. I'm excited for the test in front of the 49ers, you know, I think Dominic Poonie for one Dominic Poonie was really good his rookie year. And we saw him kind of tail off towards the end of that year. I think he hit the rookie wall. It's pretty typical. And then last year was a down year form, but he was injured for a majority of that year. He fought through that because the 49ers needed them and kudos to him for doing that towards the end of the year were, were health started to become a little bit better form. He produced a little bit better. And this year we're seeing them play at a very high level. So I think when you couple that with Connor Colby being there instead of Berford, I think Berford actually did a better job than maybe people think. But Connor Colby's just nastier than Berford is he's stronger than Berford is he's just built a little bit differently than Berford is. And I think when you combine those two being next to Brindell, it makes his job a lot easier.

So I think that's a lot of what we're seeing. It's probably the same Jake Brindell. And he's just got it easier because these two guys next to him are his road dogs now and Poonie's a better version of himself. Connor Colby is is a stronger better player, probably than Spencer Berford. So you know, when you combine that, it makes his job easier. But that is the matchup and that is the question, you know, for all the things the 49ers have done great. You know, not no sacks on Brock Pertie and limiting the turnovers. None of that matters in this game. This is a different matchup. And this is the actual test right here. And if the 49ers can pass this test, I think every single person watching this show, who is a 49er fan around the world, they are going to realize that this team is for real. But if they don't, those four wins prior are not going to feel as good as they do right now. It's going to feel a little bit hollow because it's like, yeah, but the Seahawks did it again. So this game means a lot for the 49ers.

No question. I feel like the Niners, you know, couldn't stop Kenneth Walker. And I feel like John Schneider gave us a huge break by just deciding to not resign Kenneth Walker. They have the cap room. They decided to pay Rashid Shaheed. They're not even using Rashid Shaheed as a receiver. They're still just using him as a return guy and they paid him $17 million. Instead of paying their bell cow running back, who is the MVP of the playoffs and Super Bowl. So now he's out. They were going to go Joe Mixon. I think they probably had second second thoughts when they saw some of the pushback, they kind of dipped their toe in the water. We're going to sign Joe Mixon. And I don't know what kind of feedback they got. But it couldn't have been good. That's for sure. Now granted is domestic violence situation was a decade ago. But this video of it, anybody can see it. And to me, that's, I mean, that's where I draw the line, man. I don't want, I don't want any of those guys on my team. I don't care if the guys from here or not screw him.

You know, if we can't stand up as a society against putting your hands and being violent with against women and children, then what the hell are we as a society. So I, to me, I, that's where I draw the line. Yes, it's a rough game. Yes, there's some rough guys who play this rough game. But I, to me, the domestic violence thing is a non starter and they went in that direction. And then suddenly they didn't suddenly they said, you know what? No, we're not interested. And they brought in the practice squad guy from the Ravens, who's a pretty good player. You know, I forget his Robert Henry, I think his name is. And I wouldn't be surprised. Like three weeks from now, if you saw Robert Henry at 100 yard day for the sea hawks, people who's that guy. He's actually pretty good. He had a really good preseason. He was really good. I think at UTIP. But I want to share the screen. And to me, I think the Niners are going to win this game. And I think they're going to win this game partly because I think they're going to have more success running the ball than they've had. And I think they're going to have a lot of success.

And I think they're going to have a lot of success shutting down the sea hawk run game. And three guys that I think are really key are in this little clip here. And I don't think this is going to get us demonetized because there's no scoreboard on this one. This is just a play from last week. And on this play, you're going to see. Okay, so right now you got Neckon Jones and the first. Are you seeing this with today? Yeah. I got you. So yeah, Neckon Jones is in the yellow circle. And you got sea bass, the fashion Valdez, who's been very underrated with the red circle. And then you got green law here. None of these three guys were there when they played Seattle last year. Look at the way they played this run here. Neckon Jones job is to plug the middle green law is going to shoot a gap and Valdez just keeps working. But don't wait. These special savings won't last. We make it easy. Toyota, let's go places. They're better against the run than they've been and I and I think Jones has helped them green laws aggressiveness has helped them. But I think this guy over here 55 has really helped them. He's he's a past Russia, but the motor is terrific. And he just stands in fights. And he plays incredibly hard and he's not going to stand up against duo or combo blocks or anything like that. He won't. But you know, I'm against one on one blocks like this. He's not going to give ground. He stood that blocker up and then eventually, you know, kind of closed on the ball. I'm granted green luck and I made the play ahead of him. But I think these three guys are three key guys against stopping Emmanuel Wilson and the inside run.

And I think that's a big part of this. I mean, you saw, I don't know if you saw those numbers, but you know, it's a lot of a lot of this is about pressure on darn old. If the Niners can pressure darn old, they got a great chance to win. And then darn old against pressure so far this season is eight of 26 30.8% 132 yards passing no touchdowns two picks and a 16.8 passer rating. They had Walker in the playoffs. They stayed ahead of the chains. There was not a lot of pressure on Sam. Donald and he didn't turn it over. He led the league and turnovers in the regular season. Didn't turn it over in the playoffs. And they rode that to a Super Bowl. I think their equations bogging down. They got rid of what they let Walker walk. The Giderian price got hurt. Now they're going with a back that's not a scheme fit that can't get to the edges. And I don't think they're going to run the ball. And I think Sam is going to get into some third and longs. And then it's about can you pressure Sam and will we turn it over. I think, you know, I think the C.O.X. winning equation has bogged down a little bit. What do you think?

Yeah, I would say so a little bit. First of all, shout out to Sebastian Valdez. I couldn't talk enough about him during the preseason. He was my preseason MVP. I was frustrated when the 49ers put him out there on waivers for everybody to get a look at him. I think Adam was very happy that he cleared waivers and made it back. And I've been asking for the 40 Tigers to call him up every single week. And they finally done it. And not only have they done that, but they found a nice little role for him to help the run defense by playing them a little bit of the five technique and allowing him to just kind of bully on the outside because that's exactly what he is. Kudos to the 49ers for for knowing or at least assuming I guess that he would make it through waivers and then calling him up and changing the position around form. I think it's gone a long way for the 49ers. And I agree with you. I think the 49ers are going to win this game. Ultimately, the see hocks are the second worst team I believe in the NFL and third down conversion rate.

Are they really down? I didn't know that they're awful. They're bad. And not only that, if you look at what should be expected from them, based off their opponents that they play, they should average about a 40% third down conversion rate. They're all the way down to 31% like they're 9% below where they should be based off the averages of their opponents. So they're awful on third down. And you're right. It's because they don't win on first and second down. It's a 7.9 yards on average. They've got to get to get their third down conversions to where the 49ers are at 4.5. That's a major advantage. So when you look at it and they've become very predictable on offense as well, you know, you got the Brian Flurry thing losing Kubeak was was my main thing. It wasn't the Walker loss. It was the Kubeak loss for me. And it was because he's such a good coordinator. And I thought Flurry actually did a pretty good job the first couple weeks with lock at quarterback and what was kind of thrown his way in the first two games of being a play collar. But since then he's become very predictable on first down in particular with running the ball. And I think that is a big reason why they are struggling to move the sticks on a pretty regular basis. So yeah, I think they're down as the key to this game. I really do both ways.

You know, it's funny because Flurry came from the Niners and I was asking somebody the other day, hey, what's what is how's he doing up there? You know, I asked some of the Seattle people. And they're like, you know, there's a lot of criticism. And you know, he's he's never called plays before and he's a former tight end coach and you know, Greg Coastel said yesterday. You know, basically they're running a lot of the Niners plays. I mean, says it looks a lot like the 49ers. It's a lot of base personnel. Last week against the chargers, they played eight snaps of 12 personnel, two tight ends, five snaps of 13 personnel, three tight ends. And 11 snaps of 22 personnel. So the sea ox are now playing with a full back a lot. And they're playing at a base personnel a lot. They're using a lot of the nine or plays. But we're trying to replace Clint Kubiak with a guy who's never done it before. I don't know, man, I think that was pretty ambitious on their part. And I like Flurry. I think he's a nice guy. But if you haven't done it, you haven't done it. If you don't have the experience, you don't have the experience. I mean, and he doesn't. So I don't know if that's the factor or if it's a factor at all.

Let me ask you this though. There are a bit. A lot of people, you know, one of the stats that I was looking at yesterday that I think is really interesting is that the 49ers under Shanahan pre-Purty or not nearly as good. On third down as they are post-Purty or with party, I should say. I was looking at the numbers. So Shanahan took over in 2017. You take 2017 through 2021. Those five seasons. The 49ers had a third down conversion rate as low as 37.8. And the average was 40.2% in those five years. Pre-Purty. Take 22 aside because it was kind of a mix of Lance and Purty and Jimmy. But if you just look 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026. The 49ers high point third down conversion rate is right now 57.5%. But their average with Purty is almost 50%. 49.4% third down conversion rate.

So it's funny. We always talk about, you know, I saw something the other day and they're talking about great quarterbacks in the league. And then when it got time to talk about Purty, the guys like he runs Shanahan system really well. So it and it's like it's not a knock. It wasn't like the guy was knocking him, but it kind of is. It's like, you know, this guy is really good. That guy is really good. This guy runs Shanahan system really well. And it's almost like Purty's never going to get full credit because he's he plays for Kyle Shanahan. But that's pretty stark. Man, that's a 10 point jump in third down conversion rate. You're going to do whatever you're going to do on first down. You're going to do whatever you're going to do on second down. Probably going to run on first. You're probably going to pass on second or you're going to pass on first. You're going to run on second. You're going to do whatever you got to do. But then it's third down and you've got to put the ball in your quarterbacks hands and he's got to convert and he does you stay on the field and he does it. You're punting. And to me, this is football in a nutshell. And I just think that I'm not saying that Shanahan's overrated. I'm just saying that sometimes I think Shanahan gets a little bit too much credit when you know Purty took over for Jimmy non Shanahan non Jimmy quarterbacks under Shanahan were nine and 29.

It wasn't like everybody won. So I just feel like I guess Shanahan awesome sure as he won the best offensive play cars. Yeah, but the difference is Brock Purty. I think how do you see that? Cause I mean, it's that's pretty stark. 40.2% in the five years prior to Purty. 49.4% in his last four years. Yeah, I think you got a couple of factors at play. You know, we talked about why the 49ers are successful on third down this year and it starts on first and second down when you lead the league only having to go four and a half yards. That helps. We also have to remember that CMC was traded to this team October of 2022. He preceded Purty by only five games. You know, so I think when you add CMC to the mix of Brock Purty, Brock Purty is clearly the best quarterback that Shanahan has had. In a 49er system and CMC has been a game changer for everybody around him since he has been here Jimmy Garoppolo included. I mean Jimmy Garoppolo had a stretch of four games without a turnover for the first time ever in his career.

The moment that CMC stepped on the field, so he makes the game easier for people Brock Purty is making the game easier for people Kyle Shanahan has trust in Brock Purty. Obviously has trust in CMC. So I think the addition of CMC along with Brock Purty taking over is the main reason why you're seeing what you are seeing. Let's do this. We'll move Jesse to the corner real quick and we'll do our prize picks lineup right here. We'll do it on the Niners and the Seahawks. We should tell you we never even told you but the cruise show of course always brought to you by pick and a pick all the best barbecue in all of Northern California. We're also brought to you by prize picks use code HMA play five dollars and they'll give you 100 if you win it you'll they'll give you 150 and bonus line ups just because you won that first one and also thank you to Nevada Chevrolet. All right. Niners Seahawks, who do you like here Jesse which which we will go one of each. We'll just go to a two teamer here one nine or one Seahawks which nineer would you like to invest in the Brock Purty running is like the

one that you like every week it's cash and in he's at 19 and a half yards like let's let's go more man. I'm right I'm right in this wave until it falls off he has been more every single week up up a little bit further. It's on the left hand side to go up a little bit there you go. Okay so more on Purty I like that you know the other one I thought was could be good was the rush attempts. Because I think there could be quite a few rush attempts in this particular game. All right let's jump to Seattle which one do which one stands out to you with the with the hawks. You do want to go JSN you want to you know there's a lot of different options here manual Wilson what what do we have for for same Donald what are what's he looking at the our device. Let's see I think Donald's down here. I thought I saw maybe Donald's up top. Because we know there is struggling to run the ball a little bit right we talked about that I want to know what his yards are at.

See maybe he's down here further. Soberch, Kwannee, JSN there we go there it is okay so Donald is at 200 or 227.5 pass yards 30 and a half pass attempts 20 completions. You know what I actually you know what I like here is the longest the longest completion 32 and a half let's let's take less the 49ers have been limiting is close to play is big time this year and I think they can do that again so let's go Donald 32 and a half yard longest completion I think we can get less than that I like that I like that all right so we will submit our lineup on those two alone and we'll view our lineup so we're going to pick power play Purty more he's got to have 20 rush yards and Sam don't know what I'm doing. He's got to have his yards and Sam don't know has to have his longest completion has to be 32 yards or less if that happens are 20 bucks become 60 bucks thank you to prize picks once again prize picks code HMA and we didn't move that around but and we code HMA and and your for you win that first $5 lineup or more they're giving you $150 in bonus line ups.

How do you defend JSN what do you do here they don't have you know they're not using Shahid that much their other receivers are just kind of like you know just to keep just give JS and a blow every now and then it just seems like he's just he's the guy and the Niners could you know they could have demo travel with them they did that with DK Medcalf at times or you could do what they've done which is you know Dimo to the to the to the boundary and green to the field and then and then inside that game plan you know there's there's all kinds of games that that Rahim seems like he likes to play up front I mean whatever he's doing his work and he's got 50 some odd pressures in four games what do you what do you want to see from the defense in the skin. Yeah I mean you've got two options right you can either led JS and do his thing and and shut everybody else out or you can try to bracket coverage him give help over the top every chance you get and make everybody else beat you and I think that's probably the way to go I think it's easier to limit one players touches versus everybody else's and I want to see a receipt she he'd or a Cooper Cup good good players right but they're they're not JSN.

Cooper Cup is is not the old Cooper Cup he's just an older Cooper Cup and we know that they struggle to run the football so I would love for them to do whatever it takes to limit JSN you know he's still going to get a little bit of his for sure but his target share is so high on that team and it was last year it really hasn't changed year over year I think he's up 1% over last year he just gets a ton of targets and he's an absolute game record and if you allow that to happen it's going to be a lot of things that you can do. So I think it's going to be a long day if you allow him to bail you out on third downs when it's third down along it's going to be a long day he has to be a point of emphasis and you know I do like the diameter of the nor matchup especially with help I don't like a man to man one on one I think that that whole thing is overstated a bit. You know we're talking about very few snaps and I think two pass interference penalties that don't count for for any yards in that matchup and so when you look at it's like one catch for zero yards or whatever on five plays like all right well it's a small snapshot and what about the P I yards what we don't include those so I don't want any one on one matchups with JS and I want you know some match coverage 49ers are going to play a lot of zone as well.

I think they've done a good job in and running some quarters and running some match with that but definitely have to have that extra high on JS and maybe that extra eyes Fred Warner you know Fred Warner so good and coverage and you don't really have to worry about the running backs and tight ends with this team like you do a team like the 49ers maybe he's the extra guy he can help underneath while Lenore whoever helps over the top and then you can roll safety coverage to the other side I think that there's some some opportunity there for the 49ers so I think that you can go back and see what I'm going to do. I'm curious to see how they play it but you know I think rolling coverage to JS inside and then also pressuring Donald so he doesn't have time to go through his reads I mean those are going to be the keys of the game for sure defensively I just feel like if you pressure Donald he's going to throw you one and maybe more he's in a throw us one he's in a throw us what he is it's just it's just that's what it feels when you watch him it's like if he in he's in he's a guy that you know he's was pressured a lot at USC he was pressured a lot in his early days in the end of the year.

He's going to fail and he had lots and lots and lots of turnovers so I think pressures the name of the game it is interesting though with Rahim unlike Salah who would like you know we're going to rush four out of a wide nine we're going to play cover three we're going to play all zone it's like Rahim's game plan does vary from week to week last week he saw that mix was really you know really struggled against against you know five and six man pressures and on the first three or four key third downs you know before we're going to play the game. You know not the third and 17 or whatever but on some of the thirds he early thirds he's bringing pressure and you could see nicks struggled with it and in like the in the week one game in Australia I thought the Niners did some incredible things with stunting and moving guys around and and Stafford was jittery because he saw Ramello height coming flying through the A gaps and I even asked Ramello about that I said in that in that Rams game seemed like you know after you guys ran a few of those stunts and one had dug her coming through the A gap at a break next speed one had height I go I kind of felt like you know that that Stafford saw that he didn't hit him on those plays but he saw that and it made him it's sped him up a little bit and he looked me in the eye and said I absolutely agree he's like I think we when we started stunting in the A gaps he started seeing the kind of speed we could run through there and all of a sudden he was a little bit faster I getting rid of the ball

the rest of the game so you don't always have to hit the quarterback to impact the quarterback but but what I love about Rahim is he mixes it up now offensively there's some questions to it's like where's the mismatch I think Mike Evans against Josh Joe you know Evans is the boundary ex Joe plays that boundary corner I think that's a huge advantage for the Niners Evans is playing great his last game up there at 18 targets 12 catches well over our eyes catches well over a hundred yards couple touchdowns and then the big question is with juice out Jesse do they just put in brain willis and keep rolling and do everything exactly the same or do you think that Shanahan goes you know what now we're we're going to go more 11 personnel and go three wide and change it up and maybe don't lean on the fullback position as much how do you think they're going to handle that. Oh man the juice the juice one is is actually interesting because I I feel like with that cheap motion banana motion whatever you want to call it the

the four downers have found something and he's the best at executing it in the running game and so I'm curious to see how that plays out without him there I do like more of D. Bo in the backfield with CMC I think the two of those guys can really put a lot of pressure and stress out defenses because now you're forcing linebackers to try to cover these guys and both of them are going to get open against linebackers pretty routinely so I think you can do a lot of things there if you are going to have a traditional fullback in then Braden willis I thought he looked better as a fullback in the preseason then he did a tight end at least as a blocker think he he blocks better out of the backfield so I think that we can get some good help there I think that's how you kind of make up for not having juice but it is a bigger loss than then probably most people realize because he's just a fullback I guess but he's he's done a lot this year and I think he's improved as a blocker as well as a run blocker I thought the last couple years he had taken a dip in that

category in this year he's gotten much better so curious to see you know how the 49ers work around that but that's the idea I have certainly Mike Evans versus anybody I like that match up so yes him versus Job I'd rather have that match up than him versus Spoon if I'm looking at it so I think that that's a match up that the 49ers can win and then defensively you know I'm looking at it and it's interesting because they don't really blitz a whole whole lot more than what they did last year it's up about 4.5% but it's the simulated pressures and how you go about simulated pressures you know Mike McDonald we talked about him schematically earlier against Shanahan and how he puts offensive lines and conflict based off of knowing their rules and I feel like Raheem Morris is doing a little bit of that as well because they're not having to send extra guys necessarily they're not blitzing a ton Seattle doesn't blitz very often but when they do the blitzes are timely

you're seeing a lot of that from Raheem Morris and I think he's very crafty very creative and doing it with Alboza makes it makes it more impressive but also the fact that he has Fred Warner and Dre Greenline now back and playing at their tip top level I think that helps them out as well you know it's interesting Steve Wilkes blitzed a lot more on a higher rate before he got with Shanahan then we got with Shanahan they didn't blitzes much and then they had the controversial blitz the zero blitz against the Vikings at the end you know the Addison touchdown at the end of the first half and now we're seeing Raheem Morris who blitzed in a lot more and other stops he's not blitzing a whole lot I kind of wonder if that's Shanahan saying hey look don't take these chances play it a little more close to the vest or do you think it's just happenstance that both these guys you know blitzed more in other places than they did with the 49ers

I think Shanahan plays a big role in this you know we know that he has his hands and what the defense does I mean he's the head coach of the team and he has a lot of input so I think it's a collaborative effort for sure and also I think that Raheem Morris is smart he knows exactly what has made this team win and it isn't through blitzing that is not the strength of what they do you can blitz and when you do and you're creative they've got guys that can do it but really playing coverage and allowing guys like Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw to execute in the open field is what makes this team tick and I think he understands that and so I think the combination of the two certainly brings that to the forefront but on the flip side he is blitzing a little bit more you know it's it's up about 5% I know that's not a massive number but it's simulated pressures are also up as well so you know between those two numbers it's a little bit

it's like a give and take it's a little bit more than the nor Niners are normally comfortable with but it's a little bit less than what he's normally comfortable with and so they're kind of meeting in the middle here let's finish with a couple one more and then a couple headlines what in your mind I've got an idea for what my my choice would be but what has been the biggest surprise of this forno start on either side of the ball and it can be any element of 49er play but is there anything that in this first month has really surprised you about what the Niners have been able to accomplish oh man well I would say I would say twofold one of them is the guys that are getting injured or not the older guys it's been mainly some of the younger players that's a bit of a surprise I mean if you told me the 49ers had a ton of injuries I'd be like yeah we know that's normal but I would have expected it to be the Evans in the kittles and the CMCs or the Trent Williams that hasn't been the case it's it's all the other guys so that's a little surprising

and the offensive line listen man I've I've tried for two years to say that this offensive line is better than people realize it's even better than I realized right now so it's surprising even me somebody who's advocated for this offense a line for quite some time you know when you compare to the rest of the NFL they are better than maybe most people think but now they're elite they've gone from being good or maybe even very good at times to like elite at this point zero sacks that is a quarterback stat as well Brock pretty deserves credit for that but there are times where he is just camping back there Larry and there have even been times where he's scrambled and ran where he didn't even need to like the protection was good they are doing a great job of not only protecting him but late in games I know the 49ers run game is there some question marks there are they averaging as many yards you would like probably not but every single game we've seen the same recipe play out first half it's like all right

you can kind of run the ball second half you're seeing big gaps where CMC is running through untouched 8 10 12 yards down the field I don't care how many steps he's lost anybody can run through those holes and if you're not getting touched for 8 to 10 yards your life is a running back is so easy the offense of line has done a fantastic job this year yeah no question for me I'm going to go on the other side of the ball the 49er defense you know I mean they lost 6 defensive linemen I mean they're starting defensive events if you told me in OTAs that they're going to you know lean heavily on oboe ocaron quo and collid cream I would have been like oh my god it's going to be a nightmare instead the 49er defense has allowed the lowest explosive play rate 3.5% by any team in the first four games of a season

wait for it since 2000 we're talking about over a quarter century this 49er defense is eliminating explosives better than any defense in the first four games of the year in 26 seasons Jesse that's startling is it not yeah I mean it is massive and I'll say this do you get the feeling that the 49ers and maybe the 49ers are the only team that believe this but that the 49ers have kind of changed their the philosophy of how they look at things where the league traditionally Larry we've heard this since we were young and watch the game whoever wins the turnover battles going to win this game right that doesn't seem to be the case anymore now it's now who can win the explosives battle yes you get explosive plays and can you stop explosive plays that's who's going to win this game and I feel like the 49ers have leaned into that heavily maybe more so than any other team across the league and I think it's benefiting them in a big way no doubt

no doubt couple headline Sean Payton announced today that he's going to be calling plays this week for the chargers thought that was interesting also Lane Johnson retired Stephen A Smith ripped him my God I mean and the guys having as Lane Johnson's having you know some some issues and some you know some mental issues and and it's like come on man Stephen A Smith read the room got a thought on either one of those and and then of course we also have the the the Burkart Brady broadcast team this weekend I think that's the best broadcast team going right now any of those things grab you yeah well listen to meco Ryan has taken over play calling as well that all for oh and for team listen the payton one is funny to me because we knew it was going to happen we just knew he wasn't going to be able to keep his hands off that play sheet however it's not going to matter bonus is the problem right now I I watched that

film he was turning down big play after big play called against the perfect coverages to go in their and he just turned it down there was a play it was first and 24 the Denver Broncos Mike McGlenchi had just gotten a holding call now on this drive they end up getting two short plays on second and third down that put him in field go arrange but they don't get the first down first down they call dagger on the wide side of the field and the 49ers are running cover three dagger against cover three is a win every single day of the week not only did he not look at the in breaking route on dagger or excuse me did he not pull the trigger and throwing it to the in breaking route he never even looked there it's like he doesn't know what he's looking for what he's looking at he didn't have pressure he looked at the check down option the whole time never even moved his eyes over to that that dagger concept and it was obvious the whole time the 49ers were in cover three like that was a play that was meant for a big chunk it would have gotten

a first down and who knows what the game looks like if he converts on that one but said he takes a check down they get a couple yards over the next two plays they get a feel goal big whoop so I think bone nicks is the problem right now I don't think it's Davis Web but he's not he's not seeing it he's not seeing it he's he's a typical college quarterback he's got great foot speed in a strong arm but nothing he doesn't you know he doesn't have any of the subtleties of playing quarterback down at the pro level and if Brock pretty played him ten times he'd probably beat him ten times just because they're on different platforms or different later at different levels right now we got this one from lightning mom buys a shenanin and pretty got 36 points on Mike McDonald's Seattle D and Seattle on 10 10 24 shenanin scheme not the issue comes down to talent health wide receiver and separating separation interior one yeah no there's that's a lot to really good point I have agree with that statement real quick obviously talent matters but you have to remember two

you were looking at it a see oxy that didn't have their talent and line yet you know you didn't have the human worries and and whether spoon was good but not as good as he is now and you know you know Leonard and all you know there's a lot of changes they've made their middle linebacker who I'm drawn a blank on his show earnest Jones they made the trade from him after he'd gone from the ramps the Titans he's been a game changer so this goes both ways talent matters on both ends if they both have their best and right now the 49ers seem to be at their best offensively they're healthy defensively over there I want to see it let's see who's seen matters most choruses people are critical the hawks run game but do the Niners have have one hawks have the better run D in manual Wilson had 120 yards and two touchdowns last game we'll find out we'll find out yeah we'll see I think Wilson is I think they're going to shut him down Jesse great stuff I got to jump over to the to the collective
