About this episode

“It's a brand new episode of Nobody Asked Us With Des and Kara presented by Brooks running. But I'm bum bum, desks, I am doing so smooth, so professional. Where are you in a corner of a building in what state?”From the transcript

Fall marathon season is officially here with the Berlin Marathon this past weekend, and as usual, there is much to discuss.

First, Des and Kara catch up on life's happenings. Des is in Arizona previewing the Javalina course for her upcoming 100-miler. She had a near-miss with a rattlesnake who was taking over a dirt road, and she learned that she is more nimble than she thought. Kara commiserates with her own rattlesnake stories and then shares about a bobcat siting. They talk 100-mile prep, driving instructors and tests (Happy Birthday Colt!), and dance-partying the night away. Who remembers their driving test? Did YOU have to parallel park?

Of course, then they turn the discussion to the Berlin Marathon where Tigst Assefa ran the 3rd fastest time ever, finishing the final miles on a completely torn Achilles tendon. An insane finish. Also insane... the uneven discussion of men's and women's performances as it relates to chasing records. Kara just can't get over the fact that the men are always glorified when they run fast, while the women's performances are always questioned for cheating. As for the men in Berlin, the winner (Adola) ran a 2:02 ;). Meh?

Finally, we finish with a top-5 to close things out in yet another fun episode!

What is up everybody? It's a brand new episode of Nobody Asked Us With Des and Kara presented by Brooks running. But I'm bum bum, desks, I am doing so smooth, so professional. So professional. Look at you, you're not at home. I'm not. I'm in a corner. Where are you in a corner of a building in what state? You like this look? What is going on? You have to be on the YouTube to know what's happening right now. It's really nice. I like this hairstyle on you. I am in Arizona for a couple days. It's currently raining outside. But that's okay. It's like on my run in already. Yeah. Okay. It's great to be here. Okay. So I just learned last night because I had an especially social weekend where time drained from, but Adam's uncle, Bob Becker is in town and he was talking to me about you because

he's run MDS a few times. He's run Havaleena quite a few times. And he was, I did not realize that Havaleena is a loop scores. And he was a little worried about you and how you're going to move around people. And he hoped that you were like talking to the race director and figuring this out. But so I didn't realize it was loop. So have you been able to just train on that specific loop? Yeah. So we have an Airbnb that's like right at the halfway point basically on the northern part of the loop. And so a couple days I was here by myself so I did out and backs. I got to see a fair amount and then have some training partners in town now and we're doing the loop. I did the loop the loop Sunday. And then I'll do the loop plus a little add on again tomorrow. But I think it's funny. It's about 20. Yeah. Okay. So I think the trails pretty wide fairly often. Like it's wide enough. And it's 20 miles. So I feel like even with people like having to pass people is just like,

you should be dispersed enough over 20 miles. Okay. I don't think it'll be too problematic. And he's under the assumption that I'll be moving forward and running well. I'm just saying. He is your biggest fan. He is like, she is going to crush it. So he also wasn't sure he couldn't remember does it go one direction one way and then you go the other direction or is it always the same direction? I think it's the same direction the whole time. Okay. Okay. Because it's like it's super it's really great running. Like it's very runnable. Like smooth almost scravely type roll like gentle course. But I did the first day and I was like, I'm having a fucking day. Like I'm so fit. I feel so good. And I was just like having so much fun. And then I turned around to come back and I was like, Oh, that was all downhill. Like just very gradual. Like 2% like nothing crazy. But you're coming back up and you're like, this is balls. Like this is not very fun. Right. Right. So it's yeah. Are there steep hills or is it mostly like those long

it's fun. Like it's just a various like my quads haven't been like I've done it, you know, a couple days now and my quads aren't like blown up like from running downhill is hard. It's just like if I were doing it, it's like this. Carrots like yeah. You know, you know, it's smooth. It's gentle. Okay. And then are you do you know what shoes you're going to wear? I don't. We're having that conversation today. I mean, I like the what is a cascade elite. I always the plates interesting to me like do you need it? Do you not need it? I don't really know. And then I got a brand new pair that I was going to bring out here. But I think they run to me. They run a half size small. So I have to get a different pair. And so I've been running in the ghost trail. And that's fine. Like that works perfectly well. You could honestly get away with the road shoe out here. Like it's not yeah, it's not a crazy like rugged course or some rock. But it's like on the uphill. So I love that you're there seeing it.

Yeah. Because like now you know it. No way. You know. I just like keep talking about it. And there's so many ways to break it into pieces. And it's like, okay, well, I know like this part is going to feel hard because it's this gradual uphill. And it's going to be hot. But like once you get to that peak and you have this flowing smooth downhill, you feel amazing. But like it's just very natural ways to like break it up. So it's good. I big fan of seeing courses. I feel like you're you're feeling much more confident, which I'm happy about. No, no, I'm not. I'm not saying that you're like, oh, I'm going to win this outright. I'm going to be so great, which you probably will. But I just feel like you're feeling more like, oh yeah, no, I can do this. I don't I think I can run 60 miles. Well, we know you can run 60 miles. And then after that, like you get to have Pacers. Okay, after 60 years of the whole time for the less two laps. Okay. So I'll have Magda and Ryan. And I don't know which okay yet. I can figure

that out. But like, I think the third lap, like it'll be the hottest. Like obviously you're getting to a point where you're like, I haven't done anything beyond this. But then you pick up your pace or yeah, so you have some company. And then you just have one lap to go. So I'm like, there's almost one last. Yeah. One last to go. Yeah, that's 20 miles. 20 miles. 20 miles. Yeah, just that's just some easily 20. But anyways, it's been beautiful. The sun's sun rises have been amazing. But the second day I was here trying to figure out the course a little bit. And I have to run this like one mile of country road that connects to the trail. And I kept miss like I missed the turn twice. And then the next day, I missed it the third day. I was like, fuck yeah, I got it. I know exactly where it is. And like, it's a hard right turn. And it's just this loose gravel. And I made the turn. It's like pretty warm out. And there's this rattlesnake literally in the trail. And like, it was like a cartoon where you're trying to stop. And you're just

like spinning the wheels and like gravels flying out everywhere. And I'm like, sometimes, sometimes, sometimes. And like, this snake, I scare it. It coils up. It's like, and like, I'm like, fuck, like, am I going to jump over it? Am I going to be able to like actually stop in this gravel? And then the little tail pops up. It's like, and I started right in front of it. And I just take a huge jump back. And I was like, I can't believe that just fucking happened. Like I wish, like nobody was around. I was just like cursing us. Like, are you kidding me? I'm so sorry, Paul. I'm so sorry. I'm not trying to hurt you. But way around it. And then I was like, just trying to calm down because it was, it was so close. And then I looked it up later. I was like, what do you do if you've been bit by rattlesnake? Oh, you're screwed. You have to find someone right away and go to the hospital. It's not that bad. I don't think it's great. But I was surprised. They were like, don't try to cut it out with a knife. Don't do that. Don't suck on it. Don't do that. Yeah. It was just like get to, you know, emergency services soon. But a lot of people is like in the middle of the trail.

So it's quicker to walk out. So it's like, I would have been fine. My car was like a mile away. I mean, it's not good. Like a friend of ours, their son got bit by rattlesnake and he ended up having to be airlifted to the children's hospital. He ended up being okay. But it was like, it's not good. No, no. You don't want to get bit by the rattlesnake. No, I did not. I felt very, I felt really bad because it was just like sunbathing and I ruined it's, you know, like I'm sure it was just as scared as I was. But I wasn't going to bite it. I hate rattlesnakes. And we have rattlesnakes season here. I hate them. I remember on Mother's Day years ago, we were hiking and there was one just like it was, it was still warming up, but it was stretched across the trail and we're with the dog. And we just, I, we didn't even see it. And then Adam's like, oh my god, we just walked right over it. And it was too cold to do anything. And um, but like, yeah. But you know, so I, the first time I saw one was in college and Webmore was like, oh, well, it can only jump the length of its body. So as long as you jump high and I like can't fucking jump. Okay. Like I jump as high

as I can to get like two inches off the ground. But I hate rattlesnakes. They're terrifying. Yeah. Didn't you get a picture of it? Yeah. It was like a trap just super zoomed in. But like, literally like, it was boy, like I almost stepped on it. Like I like nearly slid into it. And I was like, please stop. Please stop. I don't want to hurt you. Yeah. You're like, I actually don't want this to happen. No, like I'm not trying to interrupt your sunbathing activities. Right. But you also have to have some awareness. This is the middle trail. And I just turn, I'm not trying to do that turn. You know, there's rocks they could lay on. I mean, they like the trail. It's nice and everything's cut down there. And that's where they go. Do you know what I saw running last fun stay? What? Bobcat. I saw a little bobcat. We saw one here too. Oh, you did. They're so cute. Yeah. It was so cute. It was little. It ran across in front of me and like just stopped and started grooming itself. And I had my phone. So I like took a little video and

then took a picture. And then I was like, I should probably leave. Like this is probably bigger. Yeah. Like it did. It seemed totally and completely out of days by me. But I was just like, I can't tell if this is like a like a juvenile or you know, it was just a regular cat getting ready for Halloween. It was so adorable. It was like cleaning itself like a house cat. Just hanging out, looking around. And then I didn't. I run out there all the time. But I have never seen it. And but I was running really early. I was running at like 630 in the morning. And then Colt told me that they do see it every once in a while when they run early in the morning. So apparently it's I'm not that special. This little guy's been seen before. A little gal. But it was so too. I was like frightening. Like it like ran across the trail right by the only bridge on the trail. And then kind of ducked down and then started grooming itself. And I like walked up slowly. And it was so unfazed by me. And I like pulled out my phone. But then I did have that thought of like,

what am I doing? Like a stop. Get her me to photo. Or mold. You know, like, leave, leave. So you got to see a little one too. Yeah, we were chatting yesterday. And one just ran by this. We're like in the sticks. Like we're so far out. I came in. I landed like at 6 p.m. Got the car drove out. I was like a 50 minute drive. And there's this crazy lightning storm. And I was like, this is like kind of the horror movie stuff. But I turned onto the road like the house is on. And it was just like dirt, like all dirt. I'm like, I'm for sure getting killed. Like you were there alone. Yeah, I was like, right. And I just wanted to talk to you while I'm getting set up. And then we should like no one's coming in. And it's like this massive house. It's beautiful. But when you don't, when you come in that night, you don't know. Oh, yeah, you're like a sure. So it's like in the middle of nowhere, point being in like one ran by it down the street. The street. That's awesome. gravel road. But I walked outside. This get a beautiful pool. And I was like, kind of smells like pee. Like this is like the song like

living back here or like, and then the next day is there's like a horse barn right next to it. And I was like, okay, that makes that's. What an adventure. I hopefully on race day, all those rattles rattles will be gone. Yeah, that's where all the people in the trail going in front of you. I was running. Dave who ran MDS with us is out here right now. I ran with him today. And he was like, I hope you don't see any snakes or maybe that'd be kind of cool. And I was like, that's literally why you're running in front of me right now. Right. I like love your breath. Yeah, thanks for taking me for the team. All they're like, honestly, if someone had been running behind me, when we made that turn, I would have been pushed right into that snake. Oh, yeah, you would have been screwed. So it's actually good. You're alone. Yeah. And yeah, that's really scary. I hate rattlesnakes so much. Well, it's not their fault. They're just trying to be. They didn't know. They're gonna put their soul. But it's like, you have this whole beautiful nature preserve. And you're coming on

our one little place where we're allowed to go. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I mean, I know we're invading their territory, but like we just have this one little route. We just want to walk into your territory. Yeah, just a little fit. Yeah. Well, and then like afterwards, everything on the trail, you're like, stick, oh, must be. Yeah. You know, like, so it got, I was glad I only had a mile left because I was like, oh, yeah, you're so scared. It's like running at nights. You slip once and you're like, yeah, I can't do it. Same thing. Yeah, same thing. Anyhoo. That's been my weekend's last couple of days. What have you been up to? Where you been? I've been home, but we just had a busy weekend. Colt turned 16 on Friday. And so he he ended up having ended up having a cross-country team that's not his over, which is fine. Super nice kids from a from a different school in Brumfield. And he wanted he wanted a legal pizza taco bar, which is like a local, it's basically like Chipotle or

Cudobar something. And then he wanted, what do they call voodoo donuts. And he was like, if that's too expensive, like, I'll help pay for it. And I'm like, you're 16. It's fine. Yeah. So they were, it was the cutest birthday party. First of all, all these kids came over and they're all juniors or seniors. So they drove here, but like Colt technically couldn't drive yet, because his license hadn't upgraded. But they we live by this big park and they like ate their food and then they went down to the park and played in the dark and then they came back and ate donuts and then they went back to the park and played in the dark. And I was like, oh my god, I love this. You guys are so innocent. This very reminiscent of my high school experience. Yeah. But he had his license test on Friday. And just to set this scene, we put him in this program to make sure he'd be a good driver. I'm just going to name the program, but I'm not going to name any other names after that. It's called top cops. And it's run by retired police officers and sheriff's and stuff. And so you do this course in person. And then in this program, you have to

do two, three hour behind the wheels with retired police officers. So he did one in May and he did one in August. And both of these officers were like, your son is an awesome driver. He's great. He's going to do fine. He could pass the test today. So we're going over to his driver's test and he's nervous. And I'm like, you have nothing to worry about. You've had two police officers be like, he's a great driver. I trust him. He could pass it today. So we get there and he's so nervous. And then the tester is also a retired police officer, which I totally respect. And I also understand that your deciding if kids can drive on their own or not, which is a very big decision. You're also dealing with like kids. You know what I mean? And he was just out of the gate like so aggressive. And I'm like, oh my god, like peeled off this is not sure. He would know, no, no, cold wasn't the god. He was just like very like crabby and like

just talking so gruff. And I tried, like I went to introduce myself to him and he like, I know, he did not want to know what my name was or anything. And anyway, they leave. Colt does the test. They come back. They're sitting in the car for a really long time. And finally Adam and Aaron are like, well, I wonder if we should go over there. Like he must have failed. So we go over there and they get out and the guys like, I want to talk to you guys. And he's like telling us what a horrific driver Colt is and then he could have failed him and all this stuff. And then well, actually, he didn't see I could have failed him. He's just telling us what a bad driver is. He's telling us how he's not like all these things he's not doing. And Colt's like, Colt looks like he's about to cry, you know. And we're like, okay, okay. And again, I don't have a problem. If my son is not ready to drive, I don't have a problem with you saying he's not ready to drive. But then finally, after literally five minutes of talking about what a bad driver he is, he's like, well, I'm going to pass him. He's one in fraction away from failing, but that's not my decision technically, I have to pass him. And we're like, okay. And and then he goes on because you don't,

it's it's so great. Now you don't have to go back to the DMV. You just fill up this paperwork and they upgrade your license online. So your app upgrades to your license and then they mail you the license and you don't even have to go in. And he's like talking about it and he's like, oh, kids are so lazy these days. Like I had to go back to the DMV and like, you know, my kids a lot of things, but he's actually not lazy. Right. He works his ass off in school. He works so hard and running when he has like free time. He goes rock climbing or hiking. Right. And I have to tell him like 50 times, but he does chores too. Like one thing that does not describe him is lazy, but I Adam and I feel like we can't say anything because this guy holds his right future in his is freedom. Yeah. So this guy's just like going on and on about how lazy kids are and we're like, yeah, yeah. And then anyway, so we go to leave. And he's like, oh, by the way, he's like about than 90% of drivers that I've ever tested. And I'm like, what do we do? Yeah,

you just lectured us on what a horrific driver he is. So I'm driving go back to school and he's not excited. He's like, feels like, yeah, oh, dude. And so ironically, I have this group chat with my seven high school friends. And even though my friend lives in Lafayette, top cops is this, she also used top cops. And she has twins that are six days older than Colt. And she had texted the group thread on Saturday that her twins had gone and taken their drivers test and that one failed and one passed and that the guy was really mean and demeaning and all this stuff. So I write to my friends and I'm like, well, Colt passed, but just barely. And I'm like, the guy was so mean, like, I don't know if that's an intimidation tactic, but I hate it. And she's like, what was his name? Like, I don't know. He never even told me his name. I tried to introduce myself and he legitimately did not care. And I just gave her like a physical description. And she sends back a picture and she's like, is it this guy? And it was the same guy. And I'm like, he is. So her, yeah. So her twin that he failed went and retook their test on Monday. And the guy was like, you're a great driver. He's a

job. He purposely does stuff to try to fail kids. Like tell your friends not to go with him. So anyway, it was just, it was so stressful and it was supposed to be this like happy thing. Oh, you passed. And by Monday, your license will be upgraded and said it felt like I'm a crappy driver. I don't even know my license. And like, you just take away the confidence. It just zapped the life out of like, we were so excited. It just slapped the life out of everything. But I was trying to remember like what it was like when I got my license and I can't, I really can't remember. Can you remember? Yeah. Did you have to parallel park? I did. Yes. And it was so stressed about it. Yeah. But cult didn't have to parallel park. We didn't have to do that. I remember the written. I remember one of the what like I think I got one wrong and this I like was very embarrassed about it. And then like I was talking to someone else and they're like, why would you know that? But it was like, which way would you ride your bike like with or against

traffic? And I was like, oh, well, like again, so that you can see the traffic was my logic. And my mom was just like so disgusted with me. She was like, no, like you would get in a head on a collision. Like that's, are you an idiot? Like she was just like, how did you get that wrong? I was like, I don't know. It seems like you would want to see it. I don't know. Yeah. And then so like now I'm very obviously very aware of that. And then of course running, you know, which site to be on. Yeah, I remember missing that one and then being like, wow, I'm so ashamed that I didn't know that. And it's I don't that's like not a big deal. Like that's I kept telling cult. You passed. And I don't remember. I probably did have a written with the driving. I don't even remember. Written. I like permit. Like you had to do the written and then you got your permit. And then the tested. So I was like, she was like, this is the easiest thing. I didn't really know how to drive. I didn't really like it. Like my I had the worst the worst in person. I wish I had this cop

instead of the lady who did my did my hours with like she had the biggest hair. It was like blonde. It was frizzy. It was massive. And then she was a massive woman. And she had a black like knit thing that held all her massive hair. Like it was all over it. And then in the back of her car, she drank Mountain Dew the entire time. And she would just finish it and like flip it in the back. And then like all the like tabs like she took pop the tab, throw it in the couple there and then just flip it in the back. But I remember there was like construction in our neighborhood because new houses were being built. And we were like two houses from like being done for the day. And she was like, oh my god, pull over, pull over, pull over, I have to go to the bathroom. And there was like a porta potty because I was like, I'm so close, I'm so close to home. So you had to spend so much time with her. And then I think oh my first time on the highway, just like a normal

whatever. Like I was doing fine. But there was like a truck that was like doing the thing like through all the and it flipped. It like hit. It turned over, hit the center divide and rolled all the way back across. And like I was like in the slowly and obviously and we were fine. But she was like, oh my god, oh my god, get off the highway. Like just terrible experience. And I was like, I'm not finishing my in person. Like I cannot tolerate this lady. And I had to get a new instructor because I was just like, I feel I feel sticky. Was she in one of those cars that had chicken brakes? So she had brakes? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And like I think they have a wheel too. Maybe. I don't remember. But I just remember like that was my experience. And I was like, I don't want to drive. But somehow I passed my test like quite easily. So it wasn't good. It wasn't like a and then obviously like just drove and was like, oh yeah, I know how to do this. I feel like I was self-taught. You probably were. I definitely had behind the wheels. I just don't remember it. All I remember

is I got my license on my birthday. And then in like late August, I already got an car accident. But it wasn't like a big accident. I just pulled out of my driveway and backed into a car that was parked on the road. And I mean, I just put the car in park and run inside and go, I hit a car and just leave the car, backed into the bumper car. So I probably wasn't ready to have my license. I feel like there's way less traffic into Luthor. So it's literally was in our neighborhood. It was like our neighborhood street. And I just backed out right into this car and I just started crying, put the car in park and ran inside. I was like ridiculous. But yeah, I feel like you're a good driver now compared to Adam. Yes. Okay. But I will say having a kid in your car that's going through driver's head is good and really, really annoying because he's always converting what I'm doing

wrong. But it's also been a good little refresher. But he's so judgmental. Like, oh, that was hardly a stop mom. Or if I like push on the gas to go through the light, he's like, uh, fail, you know, but yeah, I mean, I, I just think back like, I had this, my mom couldn't wait for me to drive, she didn't have to drive me anymore. And I, my siblings and I, we all shared this two door neon Sundance, little car, right? Like the back seat you have to get, it's only one door, you have to get back there. And yet we would put so many cross country girls in that car. Like so, it was a car car. Yeah. And so we tell cool, well, they have rules now. He can't drive anyone for six months and then for six months, he can drive one person. And then after that, he can drive more. But like, you can never do what I did. I mean, we were, we would, I was the first one to get a car. And so we would just pack ourselves. Yeah. So dangerous. Yeah.

That's an incredible ability. You're like the cool kid because you have a car. Like, yes. I know. It was like a piece of crap car too, but I had a car. So it was like, car is driving. And then yeah, yeah. And it was so bad in the snow so many times we'd go to stop and we'd just keep going. We'd all scream. Anyway, we, her name is Shira, the Princess of Power. And love it. I kind of miss her. I would kind of maybe buy her if I could. It had automatic seat belts, but I thought it was so cool. Like you got it and it went. And it about windows, crank. Oh, yeah, to be. I don't think they were, I think they were crank still. Yeah. I mean, it was a long time ago. I got my, I'm trying to think. I got my like princess of power. It does put like a time stamp on it. I don't have the people as people not know what that is. Gem and the Rugglers, remember that? Yes. That was my. Yes. It's. Oh, man. Okay. What was your first card? Do you remember? G-brangler. Oh, that's cool. It was pretty cool. No complaints. Awesome. Yeah. That's what I drive now.

Yeah. It was a used one. I had pretty good amount of miles on it. And then I had that in college too. Oh, that's cool. And then I think my parents took it after. And then I got it. I got, actually got it to coma and Michigan, which was like such a mistake. It's like, why? It's not American car. So everyone in Michigan is like, oh, that's you. I was going to say much you can have a full drive. So I would get stuck everywhere. All right. That was a mistake. Live in there. I get a good getting out of snow banks. And you know, like I like rock myself out pretty good. Anyhow. What was yours? Was that those the? So that was like the family car. And then when I went to college, I got my sophomore year, my uncle bought me a car. My dad's brother. He was still alive. And he bought me a car. And he bought me a Dodge Neon, which was just like a little cheap car. And it was great. I mean, I didn't care. I've never actually cared about cars. I'd say you're a car person, probably not at all. Yeah. Like does it go from A to B? Yeah,

that's why I was like, and it was, it was new. It had been a rental. It had been a rental. But it was basically new. I was like, this is so nice. Like I can't believe this. It didn't have stains or anything. And I didn't have to share it with the new buddy. So I had that for many, many years. And then I had a, I think the first car I bought for myself was a Honda CRB. Nice. So yeah. Again, I don't care about the functional. Yeah. My boys, they can talk cars all day long. I cannot. Yeah. I don't care. Right. So yeah. I'll pick it out for you. I'm like, yeah, sure. Does it go from A to B? He's a reliable. Great. I love it. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So the other thing I wanted to discuss to see that happened this weekend was, so he has a license thing. Then his friends come over. He's in a much better mood that night. He's happy. But then because his license didn't because he the license has to upload and the DMV doesn't, isn't there on the weekends. He technically didn't have his license on Saturday. And Adam and I had made plans a long time ago to go see that 80s band

for our anniversary. So we were like, you're going to have to, so he was on the fence if you should go to homecoming or not because he doesn't have a girlfriend. He didn't ask anybody. And then because he didn't ask anybody, he's not like in with a group that's going, right? That's all there. Yeah. So he was seriously like, I don't know if I'm going to go and when we, when we told him, well, you can't drive because there's, there's going to be cops out because there's going to be kids on a party. And if you get pulled over and you don't officially have your license, you're so screwed. You know. So then he was like, well, I'm not going now because he just wanted to go do a lap. See if he saw anyone he knew. And we were trying to give it into taking Uber. Anyway, in the end, he did take an Uber. I was like, he's a brave kid. Like he just walks in there and then found the freshman boys and they dance like crazy for two hours and they took it over home. But do you remember your home coming? Not, not particularly. I remember I went every year. I know my freshman year, I went with Alex, who's mom. Oh, he was on the cross country team. Nice. That's it. That's what I remember.

Yeah. Yeah. I don't know why it's so hard for me to remember this stuff. Like I, homecoming was, I don't think it was like a formal. I think it was just pretty relaxed at my school. Yeah. Because then we had sweetheart, which was in the winter where girls ask boys and then we had from in the like the end of the year. It's from at the end of the year. Yeah. So I think homecoming was pretty low key, but I legit can't remember it at all. I'm sure I went with my friends. But I don't I don't remember I don't remember dressing up or anything like that. Now there's so much pressure. The kids have to make the crazy signs to ask him like huge, huge things. It's crazy. Yeah. Internet. Yeah. It's so wild. Like you see all these parents posting all the signs and the flowers and all this stuff. I'm like, did he have to pull that one? Was he like, oh, I'm glad I went or was he like, he was so glad he went. He, we got home at the same time because he went home and we drove home from us, from us, Minister. His suit was completely soaked through, which was ironic because

we were also soaked through because we even dancing so much. And I was like, you're a down chair. Yeah. And he goes, I've already got asked me if I was drunk. And he was like, I've been stone cold sober for 16 years and one day. Oh my god. That's wild. I know. I don't think because he is crazy on the dance floor. I've heard from other parents like at bar mitzvahs. They're like, have you ever seen your son at a party? And I'm like, no, they're like, I feel like I have some ideas. Like that's just at the 80s show. That's just how I'm getting. Yeah. So he was actually so glad he went. And I was so, I was really happy that he went to. I'm like, it doesn't have to be how you see in the movies or you see online. You can just go and hang out with your buddies and come home. You know, it doesn't have to be this thing. Yeah. So he ended up being really glad he went. So I was really happy for him. I'm pumped too. And then that was Saturday. Obviously he woke up in the middle of the night to catch Berlin results. Because why wouldn't he

we'll get into some some running action just because this is kind of a running pod. But that's yeah, that's so weird. I feel like it's been a quiet. It's been a little bit of quiet time. I think we should probably chat about cross country at some point. But it's feels like it's building. It's building. So then it'll be a season. We'll kind of get a peek at later in the year. But really, I feel like Berlin was the main show. I can't you bit after your 80s party or you just tune into some highlights. I just saw highlights. I'm going to admit it. Yeah. Same thing. I woke up in to text from people telling me what happened. And I was like, oh yeah, Berlin. It was today. Yeah. Oh yeah. That's right. Fall marathon season. Let's get into it. So either I have so many thoughts on this women's race. And we discussed it a little bit before we recorded. But yeah, I mean, yeah, how do you want to get into this? Should we just say what happened? Let's just throw down the result to 11. Oh, something.

Oh, too, I think. Low. Yeah. I mean fast, fast, fast. But super fast. Third fastest ever by a woman. So if you're looking on page, you're like, holy shit, what a race. But then I think you have to go into the result. You have to kind of see the finish line footage. And obviously, there's more to the story. Yeah. So I wrote down some splits so that we could discuss it properly, which is that she went after the world record, right, which is 20950. And she was, no, no, 20956. And she was through halfway in 6457. And then she picked it up. So she was right on world record pays halfway. And then she picked it up. She ran a 1515 5K, then a 1517 5K. And right before 25 miles, she was averaging 457 per mile. So with 2K to go, she only had to run 504 pace, which was slower than what she was running to break the world record. So she was, I think it's fair to say, she was going to break it, probably by like five to 10 seconds. If not more. But then I don't

know exactly what happened because I was reading that the footage was actually on the men's race when her injury occurred. Yeah, yeah, weird. That never happens. But with 2K to go, she starts the limping really badly. So she needed to run 504 pace to get the world record. And then over the last 1.36 miles, she actually averaged 554. And if you see this footage, she is like limping hot. She's nursing that thing. Yeah. It's not. And so she gets across the line. This is to get to get to Safa, who was second at the Paris Olympics. She had the world record in the marathon. Didn't she for a little while? And she runs the third fastest time ever. She wins by six minutes. But she is limping in. And all my entire feed is like, what a badass. If it like, how gritty. And like if she hadn't done the she would have broken the dirty record. And I was like, why am I

annoyed right now? Are they just am? Wood part. Let's dissect this. What part annoys you? Is it celebrating a clear injury or is it breaking the clearly dirty record? Is it how fast she ran? Is it all of them? I still have a little of everything. I think like I've tried to put myself in her position. If you have an injury that bad, like you know, oh, this is bad. So she's only 2k from the finish. I can see being like, I'm going to see if I can still win this. It's a huge payday. Yeah. I'm probably going to have to take a bunch of time off. The six minute lead. So yeah. So it's like part of me is like, oh, it's not a good example to set, but part of me is like, I would have done the same thing. I just would have. I would have been like until I fall down, I'm going to keep running. For a professional like you're doing your job. And you're like, I have a job. I need to finish my job. I have not yet finished. I'm going to do whatever it takes.

Again, I think you separate profession from health and wellness. Yes, totally. So I'm not mad at her about that. And then it was reported that she had surgery today the next day. She was going to have to have surgery on a partially torn or partially rupture to Achilles. So she's going to be out for a while. So on that side of it, I'm like, I get it. I don't want my kid to do that at the Patent Invitational on Saturday. But I get it when you're winning the Berlin Marathon. It's one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. It's a huge payday. It's like prestigious all of those things, right? But I think I don't know why it annoyed me so much, but all of the, oh, she was going to break the dirty record. And I was just like, oh, okay, so this impossible record that was impossible. Were we going to be okay with her if she broke it? We had to accept that thing. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, exactly. It's so far out of reach

with what we can't do that. So if she had broken it, would she still like she's being like propped up as a hero right now? I don't have a problem with that. But had she broken it? Would it have been the same result? And if so, why are we okay? Yeah. Why her? So I don't know, save me from myself right now. Tell me. I mean, I mean, I don't even know if it's like an athlete thing. I think you just, if you're a fan, you look at it, you take the results and you just live with it for now. I think there's a really, there's this group of like die-hards that want to kind of police the sport. And it's like, well, I know so and so, and she works with so and so and so and so and so and so and so and so and so and so and so and someone said something. And like it's pretty, I think is a pretty small group of people that are like just insiders kind of and that like it seems like they're allowed to put asterix on things. And I don't know who else in

like the greater picture sees it. Like do regular fans see that? Do they care? When does it get traction? And but like I think anytime there's a world record, you're probably if you're one of those deep in the sport, you're like me. You're right. I don't know. What do you think? Yeah. I mean, I agree with you. I am annoyed that there's certain people who will say there's an asterick on one, but then when the men wake the world record is like, that was the greatest race we ever saw. I'm like, okay, if we're skeptical, we're skeptical across a board, you know, and we've gotten into this so much. I just think the sub 210 was a mark that was really hard for a lot of people to understand or take. And and and we were skeptical, but we weren't going to be like, that's bullshit. There's no way you can do that because it's like, what the hell's happening to our sport? Does it make sense anymore? So we might as say where the cap is. Remember, Paula Rackler, friend, 215 without super

shoes? Tell you about an hour. Right? And now she's got a better. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I mean, the next person was 218 for a really long while she was the next person at 217. But I think the next person was 218 for a really long time and until Lila Shupacova, who we ended up, you know, she was ready. Right. You put the comparison points and you're like, oh, like, right. Ketani, she was incredible. Read a jet too popped. Right. I think Ketani was among the greatest of all time, but she couldn't. Yep. Sniff that record. No, no. So, but I'm like, if we believe to 15, then I don't know why we're against 210 with like better nutrition, way better shoes, the sport has completely changed. So I don't know. I just felt it was wild to me. I was excited that people were excited about women's sport, but it still was just rubbing me the wrong way. And I it was just like, oh, she's got to get she was almost going to get that dirty record. Okay. This impossible dirty record.

Do you think it's going to go down anytime soon? I didn't think so, but now I think so. I mean, it was it would have been gone yesterday if she hadn't gotten hurt. Yeah. I mean, I do think there's like another handful of folks that are at her level or is she, I mean, she was, she was silver at the game. So yeah, good point. I mean, she's such an interesting case because she was an 800 meter runner and she was good, but not like she was good. I think she competed at World Champs, but she wasn't like a medalist or anything. And then she didn't move up to the mile or 15 or she didn't move up to 5,000. She just disappeared for a while and then just became a marathoner and ran. I can't remember what her debut was, but it was insane. Yes. And then she ran into 1150 and you know, it's just she's, I don't know that there's anyone else running as aggressively as her. I mean, she was, she's still one by six minutes, even while capturing her killings. That's insane. I know. I don't do you think of anyone else? I use, well, you know who we're going to see

share locati run a flat marathon. That'll be a show. So that'll be interesting because she's been so good and Boston in New York and it'll be really interesting to see what she can do if she can just let it rip. So I think of someone like hers, maybe someone who could challenge it. And then maybe Safan has done it seems like she's had a hard time saying healthy lately, but she is running New York. Yeah. So allegedly. Yeah. She's on the start list right now. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, I couldn't have told you that. Assefah was going to be the next big marathon star three years ago. Right. That's kind of a key man to know where like I'm sure there's somebody that's just that we have no idea. Yeah. Yeah. I kind of wanted to get broken strictly because I want to study how people react. Mm hmm. That's fascinating. I mean, yes, just like what will people say? Will they

say it's the best race ever? Like they did for the men breaking two hours or will it be negative again? Like I'm I wanted to get broken just so I can study this. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think there's just like a very simple like oh, she's affiliated with Rosa. But that's like we got to move on. We either got to get the guy out of the sport and figure that out. You can't just be like see I told you so it's like okay, well let's do something. We obviously are all very very clear. Like I don't know and I don't mean that's a choice to sign with him. But also I don't know what the situation is like in Kenya where it's like I just need representation and this is a guy right in front of me. Right. I mean, I have suspicions. A whole lot of things that I see. But I'm not going to say no, we're putting an asterisk by that. I don't believe that. Nope. That's crazy. Yeah. I mean, I don't know how you watch the sport if you that. Yeah. It's like anything. You're I guess

you're not a fan. You're just a I don't want I don't know what the word is. I'm not going to put a word on that. But you're not a fan. Right. Yeah. Well, it was interesting. I hope her recovery goes well. She she's an aggressive racer. You got to respect it. Yeah. I saw some shot where her pacer was like slow down. Right. And she's just like blowing them off. I'm like, okay, I kind of love that. But Chappin get a gene and maybe cause guy were both the same way. We're like they would just be like, no, like you need to pick it up. Yeah. And maybe it's it's just a like there's no longer the fear of the distance. And like you have to get over that hump to be that successful to reach those kind of times. I don't know. Yeah. I am so curious how she heard herself. Yeah. I mean, like did she twist her ankle? Was it something which is shoe going dinged up and then

it just like yeah, maybe yeah. But to get to 25 and then have it just I know. And just implode. Yeah. I mean, she was in pain. Like they were like, oh, she didn't come to the award ceremony. I'm like, of course, she didn't take a barely walk when she crossed the finish line. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I wonder like how long adrenaline was getting her through and then I'm sure adrenaline went for a while and then it was just hell. But she did it. I mean, I will tip my out. Like I cannot imagine how much that hurt. No, so don't do that. Most people don't do that. Don't need to unless you're winning the ball marathon. Yeah. Yeah. There were a few others. There's like maybe five other marathons where we're like, okay, I see. I see what was going on. Well, what also was interesting that and maybe a lot of people would disagree with this. But I saw two out two in change for the men's time. And I was like, I kind of slow me. What happened? I know. I have a good reaction. I was like,

oh, okay. And I'm like, I am I am messed up now. Yeah. I have been brainwashed because I saw two Oh two and I was like, eh, back to the women's race. What else happened to the women's race? Like in Berlin, it's it needs to be a world record. You said the bar that high. But it like it is interesting that I think that people think it's either going to happen in Berlin. I guess Chicago, if you get the right weather, but now Valencia answers the mix as well. Like you have a couple more shots this year where you could see the world record go down. Do you think they're going to run? I know we don't want to really get into Chicago yet. But do you think the men are going to run super aggressive from the gun? We got another weather. But yeah, unless it's like warm. Yeah. But even like honestly, even if it's not ideal, I just feel like people that's all they want to do. So yeah, I will go for it anyways. And then if I need to step up, I'll step off. Right. Yeah. Yeah. I know I've been on a bunch

of Chicago calls and John Carrer is running and I think he wants to really rip it. They're like, this isn't a world record attempt. And I'm like, I bet it will be though. I bet they'll just let it rip and see what happens. Yeah. That brings up a topic that I want to pick your brain on. But I feel like today is not today. No, not today. I'm going to keep this episode short. Of course. So much coming up. There's so much coming up in the future. So excited for full marathons in person stuff. We'll be in Chicago. That sold out super quick. Yeah. So thank you everybody. Folks who grab those tickets. Yeah. A couple weeks out from the event. We appreciate you. I don't think it was the last minute ticket release. So we appreciate you guys finding out. You're pivoting your plans. You were probably going to go get pizza, but now you're going to be joining us for a live show. Yeah. Maybe we should bring some pizza in. That'd be fun. We could just have some fun right there. But that'll be fun. We got to figure that show out. We'll

be talking all things racing. Probably some Chicago course stuff. That's always fun. And yeah, you had all the inside information with the broadcast stuff, which I don't know if that's breaking or not. I don't know. I think it's fine to say I've been telling people I'm doing the broadcast for Chicago. Love it. So there you go. I need Kara on the Chicago broadcast. That'll be fun too. So I'm super excited. We'll be out there. And yeah, that's why we're keeping it short because there's so many things coming up. That'll be fun. Yeah. So let's do a quick top five. Quick top five. Okay. I'm going to start with one. Speaking of Chicago, are the proceeds from our life? How they're going to still I run? And they have running mental health awareness week is next week. And you can do a Strava challenge during that time. So I posted the link. I'll post it again, but go to still I run. And there's a Strava challenge that you can take part in to raise awareness for mental health and running together. Look at you just given a non-destrova. I even know.

Even now you took all of my badges, all of them. I'm just a regular pro. Garrett Heath pro runner pro runner. Carry out your carry out your no. Nope. Just carry out your the people's Strava follow. I love it. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I see an olive branch there. Maybe they'll take it. Probably not. Oh, I'm top. I'm going to go with this lovely Havaleena course that I've been running on. It's really great fun trail. I think it's like the perfect entry trail for me. And I'm sure people are like, that's not real trail. And that's why I love it. So I've enjoyed running it. I'm excited to run it a few times, but then I think I'll get sick of it with like two laps to go. That's funny. I mean, 100 miles on. It's a lot. Yeah. It's gonna be great. Okay, I'm going to show it out. My favorite band. And no, it's not Noah Khan. It's that 80s band. I freaking love you guys.

I'm sure they recognize me. I lose my mind on certain songs. They play. It's such innocent fun. Yeah. And so Adam and I went on Saturday with a few other couples. And I've right before we walked in, just like I did with my friends last year, I apologize for anything that's about to happen in the next two hours. We put your phone in. I'm doing this. There's nothing I love more than dancing to 80s music that I can sing to us. So, shall we have to try a fan? They're awesome. They've got to be our age or older. And they just rock it on the weekends. And it's so fun. Gouches Big Weekend, I love it. I'm going to go with the shoe. A product. To get the ghost trail I've been running in that. And it's like, it's so nice. It's perfect for these trails. And I do feel like even if that rattlesnake hit bit me, maybe we'd just gotten the phone preserved this. You know, there was enough foam on my foot protecting me. But it's been great on these trails, and I'm really enjoying it. So I feel like it doesn't get enough love because like,

cascadia leads so sexy. Yeah. But it's a good one. So if you're looking for a nice trail shoe. And I think like as a roadie, I just like, it feels like a shoe that I have like spatial awareness with because that trails shoes are so wide and bulky and like I always catch my feet and things. So it's like if you're a rogue person trying to get into trail, I think it's a good sweet spot. So cool. You know, my last one's going to be a shoe too. Okay. Because you and Chris kept talking about the ghost amp, the ghost amp. So okay. So this, so that. So I ordered myself a pair and I've been wearing it and I really like it. I mean, usually in adrenaline, girly, but I haven't really liked that shoe. So you guys, you kept talking about it and it worked. You influenced me. Oh, and I got it. And I like it. So if you're looking for a fun shoe to put in your rotation, go stamp. It doesn't have a plate or anything, but the foam is really nice and responsive. And I feel like you're talking about spatial awareness. I feel like I have a really good like contact with the ground with it. And

it's a good shoe. So thanks, Des and Chris for talking about it. It's great. It's a new shoe, but it's got old school vibes like it's just like a good like it's not a minimal shoe, but it's like you can feel the ground. You feel like you have cushion, but you're not like on a cloud. You're not in the marshmallow. You're not, it's not marshmallow at all. Yeah. Which is nice. Yeah. All right. Well, that's great. What a great top five. What a great short show. Look at us more soon. Thanks, Cara.
