Jan Frodeno took on the Berlin Marathon and ran 2:23:33, beating his target of 2:25 with a faster second half. We talk about what it means for Frodo to still be pushing himself in new ways post-retirement from triathlon.
Reigning Ironman World Champion Casper Stornes is out of Kona after a training crash on the Big Island. A gust of wind caught his front wheel and sent him over the handlebars, leaving him with a broken collarbone and a fracture to his L3. A devastating blow just days out from a title defence on the very island he came to conquer.
Kona is on October 10 and the start lists are stacked. Seven former world champions are heading to the Big Island, with both the men's and women's races wide open following Stornes' withdrawal. We run through who looks dangerous and who the race suits.
Cassandre Beaugrand was in a class of her own at the WTCS Grand Final in Pontevedra, winning the race and completing five wins from five series starts in 2026 to claim a second world title. Georgia Taylor-Brown was second and Kate Waugh third.
The men's race went down to the wire. Matthew Hauser took the win in a sprint finish, with Vasco Vilaca crossing the line second and in doing so claiming the overall world title. Alex Yee finished third, just four seconds off the winner.

Tases and fees apply. This episode is brought to you by...who? Welcome back everybody to another episode of Talking Triathlon. A triathlon podcast with James Bell talks to meet him forward all about the sport of triathlon. Mate, we are back. It is that time of year where athletes are arriving on the big island. The content is starting to come out. You can feel it's just around the corner. How are the energy levels? How's the excitement? How are you feeling, mate? You know what I'm going to be this week, mate? Tell me. I'm going to be loud. Oh, what? I'm going to be as loud as I can. Because we keep getting people saying not loud enough on the... Because we keep getting people saying I'm not noisy enough. I'm not loud enough. I'm going to try my best to increase my volume and get a little bit closer to my microphone to keep the masses happy. Yeah, I'm all right, mate. I am like you say I'm starting to consume more and more content that's coming out of Kona.
I really enjoy Christian Boomerfell's YouTube channel. I'm really excited to see all the content that man's producing, what he's building up on the island. Sad to see Casper Storner's out. We'll get to that. But yeah, it's beginning to sort of feel a lot like Kona, isn't it? It certainly is. You are right. I don't watch that much triathlon content. I think I've still got a few people. No, I don't. I've got a bit of PTSD after a few too many Lionel Sanders videos. But Christians, whenever I see Christian-New Christian video, I am quite keen to watch it. So yeah, I actually saw Christian and you pair of Oakley sunglasses on the other day. I was like, they're actually really nice. So I need to go and check out, maybe get Miss Off's new Oakley sunglasses. No, mate, it is not just Kona time. It is well and truly well-champage-y season because we had WTCS about 50 different WTCS championship races over the weekend,
which we are going to unpack. There is a lot to unpack after an absolutely epic weekend of racing. We then, as you said, got 70.3 and then it's all happening. It's all happening. It's very exciting. And I'm here for it, mate. What's going on with you apart from being like this week? Has the training going? Yeah, the training is actually going really well. I have got an entry to Ironman Leeds for next year. So I'm going to be doing Ironman Leeds. I think it's in August until seven. So that's really, I've got a few running races in March, April, May, which I'm going to use as a bit of a springboard into the year. But yeah, Ironman Leeds is going to be my next target. So yeah, the training is going well, mate. I am religiously sticking to my promise that I'm only doing one swim a week. And I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I do my two to two and a half K in the pool at my perfectly average pace. And I think that's enough.
And then I've got all the time in the world to do biking and running as the week goes by. So it's nice training without the pressure of feeling like I need to swim and hating it three or four times a week. Well, the good thing I suppose you bet to an Ironman Leeds. Firstly, congratulations. I think it's great to see you sign up for an Ironman. Is there's probably a really good chance a swim won't happen? So I think you're actually pretty secure in your plan and to not swim too much. I would imagine that won't happen again. I think we won't have the kind of intensity around that time of a year we did with the heat this year. I'm hoping. And I think even if we were to, I would imagine they've put some mitigation in place. See, I hear you say this. And I just want to pat you on the back like a little baby and be like, they're there, Jimbo. They're there, Jimithy. Because, mate, it's a wishful thinking when you talk to a competitor. I'm pretty proud to be honest. I think they'll probably be like, no, it won't happen again. And then that gets an issue. Like, fuck, it's happening again. We didn't come up with anything.
Shit. What do we do? So yeah, I know. I think it'll be. It'll be fine. I would like to think. But again, it is good to see you. What about you, you're a swim. With me, I am. To be honest, I'm not the single-poly marathon, which has been my sort of plan this year is. Not looking as promising as I thought a few weeks ago. I think I've just underestimated maybe the recovery required a little bit. So it's still the goal. Still going to try to get there. I might have to drop back to the half marathon. But, yeah, just trying to constantly listen to the body and not do too much, not do too little. It's a constant. Yeah, it's a challenge sometimes. But getting there slowly, it's nice just to be able to move. I think I'm very grateful for the fact that I'm able to be out and be active. So, the plan is still seeing a point. I've seen you in the strong. You've been putting in some fairly decent runs here and there.
Yeah, yeah, it's yes and no. I think I, this is probably an offline conversation. I think I've realized I was relying on some exercise a little bit too much to help with some other things. And it made me maybe just, I was a little bit overcooked. So I've had to back things off a fair bit because, yeah. Yeah, I think I just wasn't necessarily working. And again, I think what I've realized is I'm okay. I've never understood athletes who sort of train. They really don't want to do the efforts and stuff. Like they're like, no, no. And I've kind of become that a little bit myself. So I've just been doing lots of nothing training, like just moving for the sake of movement. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. But when you actually want to, you're not just complete, you want to sort of compete. It doesn't necessarily work. So I've just had to try to shift my mind, set a little bit. So short in sessions, trying to change things. It's very hard when you're used to a certain level.
And it's very far. Yeah, yeah. So I can, I can, yeah, I can attest to that. That kind of, yeah, ideas of it. Years of being used to what I could do and not being able to do it and fighting and fighting and fighting. And it was way you down after all. Yeah. So I'll get there. I think I said a few weeks ago, I got an entry, an early entry to Sydney marathon next year through the Candidacy Club. And I'm so excited for that. So I know that that'll be a really cool race to get ready for. And I'm confident that by next year, next year's Sydney marathon, I'll be ready to absolutely rip it. But I mean, the other, yeah, I'm starting like, I'm like, I'm, I'm, I'm keen to get myself a pair of those added-ass carbons that everybody's been wearing. Try them out. See how they go. And yeah, there's just a few things that'll be, um, be cool. So enough about that. If I mean, to be honest, if people want this sort of stuff, head to patient.com forwards, let's talk into ourathon. Jimbo is going to be in Conan next week for the race.
So there will be some patron exclusives access, which we will, James is not aware of until right now. I dumped it on him, but I'm sure he'll do some things that will just be for the next time. Yeah, we're going to do some stuff. I'm going to put some stuff on the Instagram, do some stories, put some stuff on the Patreon group. You know, there'll be plenty of content coming out of Conan. Um, this time next week, I will be a Heathrow. Is it, oh, okay, I thought it's, is it anyway? Yes, but no, no, this time next week, I'll have landed in Hawaii. Yeah, I would have thought so. Yeah, yeah, sorry. I thought it was Wednesday for a second. It's not Thursday. Yeah, we're recording next week on a Wednesday before you leave. That's it. That's what people do. James will be in Hawaii, wearing a Hawaiian shirt. They'll have the layover his neck when he arrives at Kahlua, Conan Airport. Maybe the smallest airport I've ever flown into my life. And he will get to, he will get to experience the joys of the Queen K, Polarny, Lee E drive,
Huggos, all those iconic Conan places you will get to have a great time. I think it's a very, very good year to be able to talk about that later. Patreon.com forces has talked in Triathlon to get all that stuff. Jimbo, it's time. Let's get into it. Where are we starting this week? I thought as, as we normally do, as a, as a dedicated triathlon podcast, we'd start with a non-triathlon story. I'm guessing, Jan Frodeno. Yeah, Jan Frodeno has gone and raced the Berlin marathon. He set out with a target time of 225, and he crossed the tape in 223.33. So he did a half marathon in 12.03, and finished the final race in 223.33. So he, he negative split that. Mother, father, bloody good old Jan Frodeno. And he just know he would have looked so good doing it too.
He would have just, like retirement, who cares? I'm Jan, fucking Frodeno. I'm just going to go run a sub 225 marathon just to keep out of it. Yeah, there's a picture of him crossing the line, and he does look very fresh. And when I saw that picture, it reminded me of the picture of you crossing the line. In your marathon PB, and you look like, wait, you don't say fresh. The same. The same. What are you talking about? I looked like I'd barely run, mate. Like I was ready to, I could have done it all again. In fact, I think I wrote across the finish line thought, I really wish I'd swam and run before this, I've ridden before this. Like that would have been even better. It's so good to see, I mean, we talk about this a lot on the show. We love to see the athletes go out there and do these single sport endeavors. Like I think for Jan, again, nobody's going to be surprised for me to say, I think it's the greatest of all time. And to see him, what is in our 42, I think, dropping a casual 220 marathon.
No, he's 45, isn't he? No. Is he? He can't be. Yeah, he could be. He's maybe older than that. Anyway, it's 45. Yeah, he's 45. What the fuck? No, wait, when did you retire? 18th of August, 1981. He retired in... Swen George. Yeah. Wow. No, he retired. Yeah. Three years ago. Yeah. Wow. God, time's going so quickly. Okay, so 45 years. He retired, and Jesus Christ, three years ago. That's flying. Anyway, yeah. So to see him doing that, I guess he still... You must be trying to be pretty serious to do that. I did also appreciate it. Well, I mean, one of his age group in the ultra thing, didn't he? The OCC, and then he's pinned over to... Berlin. Berlin. Berlin.
And he's finished 127th overall, 117th among the men, and third in his age group. Third. Wow. Running is a crazy sport. You did appreciate it in socials. Did you see that he got... Sorry, you go. You think with... Coming from triathlon like we do with these long horse games, you think 127th. That's not bad, because we're used to fields of 2002, far 2000, 3000, 5000. 56,000 people did the Berlin marathon, and he came 127th. Yeah. I do like that. I do appreciate it because of those numbers, runners-iners, as Kane to talk about their age group placement, because they don't like to say, yeah, I came 6,012. It just doesn't have the same sound as Kane fit in my age group. No. Yeah, still. Very, very impressive running. And when you're considered, we've got athletes like Alexey and that who are doing what he does. But it's also good to see, because we do ask that question.
It's a question I've asked, I've asked Chris, for example, what he thinks he'll run a fresh marathon. I know that you were talking the other day about Chris running a half marathon. I think somebody put a comment on the YouTube that was Patrick Lang saying he thinks the fastest marathon he'd ever do would be in an Iron Man. Patrick, after this call bullshit, I think Patrick Lang should go and do a... I'd actually love to see him maybe next year, Patrick Lang go and attempt the Berlin marathon. I think it'll be really cool to see him just absolutely, because especially now that he answered a 223, Patrick will want to do it faster. So, yeah, I love this stuff. Yeah, I think I was talking Andy Horset and he was saying like, you know, 214 to 220, he reckons would be a standalone marathon for him at the moment. Wow. That's so fast, isn't it? Alright mate, what's next? Well, I thought before we get into the WTCS stuff, we can have a chat about how disappointing it is to see that Casper's Storner is out of Conor.
The Norwegian said a powerful gust of wind caught his front wheel on Thursday twisting it and sending him over the handlebars. He landed on his shoulder, breaking his collarbone and said that he'd also sustained a fracture to what he described as his L3 bone in his back. He said, I have a crash-yest, a very hard blow from the wind on my front wheel. It got twisted, I lost control of the bike and flew over the handlebars. Luckily, I didn't take the stab with me. How he got away from that one is insane. As exciting as this time of year is with the lead into Conor, the negative side of this that we always sort of forget about until it starts to happen is the slew or the onslaught of athletes have to start with drawing from the race. Normally, it's because of the dreaded Conor Bug. This one, however, seems like it was just a freak accident. I'm sure most people are aware that there's been crazy winds, there's this hurricane that's sneer-why, like there's been making conditions. Nuts, I think Lucy Charles bike play actually left to white, went to LA because the conditions were so crazy and Hawaii.
But yeah, this time we do. We start to see the athletes start to pull out of the race as they get injured sick, things go wrong and they'll lead up to the race. This was like genuinely devastating when I opened social media and saw the announced. I actually saw it on Christian's story, I had shared it and I was like, at first I was hoping it was a joke and then I'm like, fuck an hell. This was one of the guys where I expect them to make a huge impact on this race and to see him out is terrible. Really, really terrible. I'm glad that he's not more seriously hurt especially considering it's involved what sounds like a lumbar spinal fracture. Just terrible stuff. It is, especially like, he's one of the favourites but he's also the reigning champion isn't he? Having won in the last year. Obviously, terrible is out. Good that he didn't take Gustav out as well because news both that both him and Gustav out would have been even worse. It's easy done. I have a different place entirely but a similar context when I was training in Lanzerotti for the Lanzerotti Ironman.
I got blown off the road once by a gust of wind because a big lorry went by and there was a break in the wind for that moment and then when the wind came back it blew me into the lava fields in Lanzerotti and it shredded my tyres. I held the bike up but it's easy done in these conditions to just have that moment where you can get used to the consistency of the wind, consistent nature of the wind and then if there's a break or a hedge gap or whatever it is or a vehicle goes by it can just absolutely side swipe you. Now while I don't want athletes to get injured I do have this glimmer of thinking what might still quite windy year in Hawaii this year because again let's be honest a lot of people haven't been following the sport that long. The big thing about Hawaii was yes has always been the heat but the other big factor was always the wind on the bike. It is a very very hard bike course because of the wind and I can attest to this never having raised there but I've done the full course several times. I have had some of the hardest days in my life on a bike in Hawaii where I remember there's one day in particular where the first the first day ever written Hawaii going out towards RV it was just an absolute punish the whole way this head wind in your face the whole way they turn around and I ran out of gears I was probably going 70 kg hour on the flats because the winds were so strong but there was one day I remember I went out for a ride by myself and there was this head wind the whole way and I and say the I was like well it's going to be so good when I turn around.
And turned around the head wind was still there and been like this feels personal like this actually just feels like someone's out to game. What I'm getting to is I'd love to see a year a year with with the really the really the wind the wind up high because I just think it's going to set us up for a very different race whereas if it's to be honest if it's just hot and it's not very windy cone is a relatively not easy but it's a very straightforward sort of race. There's not a whole amount of elevation is not really that many opportunities for the race to break up on this course because it is such a the road services incredible. You know it's very very rolling lots of opportunities for time trial it's a very time trial friendly course you add the wind to it and it's going to mean athletes like Sam Leilo again I have a Magnus did live for example the big guys as well again I have this advantage over somebody like Christian and it just means we might see a real interesting run battle. It's just I think to me if we have the wind it means suddenly there's a bit more of a question mark about what's actually going to happen how the race has gone on for so I personally hope for it but yeah I'm just glad Casper's OK.
Yeah glad is OK real blow for the race I mean he's had a good season so far third 70 point three ocean side third Ironman text list he won Frankfurt and he was six at the 70 point three world championships that's the kind of season when you look at an athlete like him and you start to think OK. He may have a really real blinder you know he hasn't sort of race too much he's obviously not specified towards the 70 point three is and he's finding his feet of those Ironman distances yeah you could have had a blinder but that will never know so unfortunate for him. And again something that not a lot of people I've at least seen or heard talking about is I know that with the Pro Series rankings Christian was saying that was basically going to be impossible for him to beat Casper because Casper had a race a better result obviously after Christians bad New Zealand race. This probably means Christians going to win the Pro Series as well I mean having a bit he has a repeat of last time in Hawaii but if Christian has a good racing in Hawaii he should get enough corners worth more points he should be able to pass Casper for the Pro Series lead as well so that's I hope Christian is the price money.
Yeah I think we'll probably see then I guess it makes the Pro Series a little bit more entertainer or exciting overall as well so yeah Christians currently leading the Pro Series Casper's in fifth so he's he's well poised to to win that Pro Series yeah I think it was to do with the with how cone I went he probably get more points was I could I heard Christian so sure anyway it's terrible hopefully this year we are going to be able to get a better result. I actually see less athletes withdraw because it does happen every year it feels like you get so excited and then one drops out then another drops out then another drops out and suddenly it's yeah but I mean before we do the WTCS stuff should we have a look at the corner start list yeah let's do it. The moment we're looking at the men's start list you've only got Casper's corners and Arthur Porsseo in red as in not racing everyone else is there either on the island or have said they're going to race we've had only those two dropouts in the women's race so far we've only had three dropouts which is Romania
Beagol Nina Darron and Daniela Blimal so currently looking quite good for the start list mate. It always is it always is a couple of weeks out and then yeah that there's starts to be a little bit more red so who we got on in corner and again big shout out to try pole athlete for doing the Lord's work here. They've got it so for people who haven't checked it they've got a graphic which has in corner on route to kind of mentioned racing quite on socials not racing so people who in corner at the moment good stuff in Christian Bloomfield Martin Ben real Sam Laylow Nick Thompson men a cool has will I'm her on dress service but Ben can you Vincent Louis Kieran lenders Casper stepny a yarnstrapman Christian Hogan hug and turning a banana Lopez Gregory Barnaby Nathan Gerber Jackson's in ski jack Moody Michelle says. Michelle Sazilla Sebastian of the Frederick funk Dominic Sawelia Caleb Noble Marius beacuse John Savius Brevold Eury Cullen Florian and get Trishon Oleg Damian Mel Lommanis and get the and Mikael Ramos so there's already a pretty big amount of firepower on the island.
Mate it's it's such a good start list the men's race. Yeah it really is it's you know it's one of those start lists here that we saw it sort of we because with the pro series is generated this we get like one or two races like this a year now. Where is we used to only get one but it's still amazing to see this this depth in the in the in the men's race here and also in the women's race the depth the depth there is just incredible I am so excited to see how this plays out. And yeah I just can't wait to be there most great you know it's so funny though so there's there's a bunch of names that I haven't Patrick Langey on a Shomburg Jamie Roodle can main Matthew Markhart Piela Corkham were on a go you like there's so many who aren't even there yet whatever. Guess which what name do you think I read I spotted didn't read like it was the first name that I was drawn to and I'm like that's a that's a one to watch I think for Hawaii that wasn't I guess a lot of people probably won't be talking about but I saw that I'm like oh wow.
They're gonna do something. Yeah men start list. Give me a color just to give me a hand. They're currently blank like white. Okay then Piela Cork. Yeah it was Piela I saw Piela Cork he jumped out of me I went yeah okay I think that he's he's had some really really solid performances this year and again just think of his frame he's quite a little guy the way the race couldn't for I could see him doing something. Yeah pretty pretty it could go very well I don't know again this is a long way out and there's some real five out there but Piela Corks I think that's that's like a wild card for me for when we do our picks and stuff next week for me is going to be Piela Cork. Do you want to go to the women start this mate? Yeah do it. Okay so people who are already in Kona according to try Paul athletes Solvi love the set Kat Matthews Laura Philip Hannah Berry at Lisa Pertera Lucy Charles Barclay was there has left I think we'll go back.
Leonie González Franziska Hoffman Julie Daron Tamera Jewett Jenny Jen dress Jen dress chic Marta Lago wink Marjolane Pierre Gabriel Lume cares Indie Lee and Sophia Pierre Reagan Hollyoke Katie Kiv Jova Yarnett who does that image and Simmons Rebecca and debris Pamela D. Oliver Rosie Wilde and Elizabeth Creodle with others to arrive just as our tale and the Obseris Fansk who else do I see there Paul and they're like Lodi Wilms Daisy Davies Jackie Herrin Katrina Christiansen I think for our languages in Hawaii I thought I saw her in Billy with that they might be in Kona they might be in Maui or somewhere shall I me shame ran Hughes and Tony Miller ski Skawalis where's Julie Daron it's really Daron there. Yeah Julie Daron's already there I think I've read her so women's thought this pretty bloody good to mate.
It is it's it's a it's a who's who on the women's long course pro world isn't it Lucy Charles Barclay for me mate it's gotta be she's gotta have the blind as she deserves it's Julie Daron for me now after after nice I really have a I have a Julie Daron feeling mate I think that I really I mean look I don't know if I mean look I adore Lucy Charles Barclay and I want her to win every five of my being I want to see Lucy Charles win this race especially after the heartbreak of last year but I have I just have I don't know mate that that run from Julie Daron was something and I just I really feel like in the women's race this is going to be a run race. I feel like it really was something it really was something and I mean how far back can she allow herself to be if she can execute a run like that over the marathon distance in Kona. How far back can she be you know quite some distance I think I just I yeah I have a bike constantly surprises me and I feel like there's enough.
Gaps or athletes that are able to ride really well that are going to come from behind Kat Matthews for example or Phillip etc. Does she can stay in touch with them but then again how big a gap could Lucy end up with if Lucy ends up with Taylor near when they work together like they did last time or is it could be God it's it's exon I'll be honest I'm more excited for the women's race for the unknown I feel like and I say this up but I feel like I know what's going to happen in the world. I think we're going to see a Christian blow in Fort Victoria but the women's I genuinely I'm just like there's so many athletes a good witnessing for me. Yeah I mean I think for me it's it's the reverse interesting I I think the men's race is the unknown for me whereas the women's race I just am so convinced that Lucy Charles Markley is going to is going to give us the kind of I mean no less enjoyable. But I can't the kind of exhibition that I think she's capable of here could be could be one for the ages she's been very quiet this year so it feels like I don't know decisions are not raised to 70 point three worlds I think it was just it wasn't anything to do with you know not feeling it or or you know maybe an injury or anything like I think she was just keeping a powder dry.
And let everybody have the little scrap for the 70 point three worlds and she's going to come and absolutely dominate. I just wonder if Taylor is so yeah God anyway we'll do it next week guys next week we're going to talk about Kona until then like so James you are about to head to Hawaii it's been very windy very hot very sunny I imagine you're going to go and do some swimming with the turtles and the dolphins in Hawaii is there anything you think you could use to have a better time when you in Hawaii having a swim. Well obviously my eyesight is very important to me and when I'm out there making friends I'm not I'm not simply going to swim with the dolphins and the turtles mate I'm going to be befriending the wildlife in a in a consensual and fed federally dictated suitable distance. Concentrally suitable swimming. And so I will I will obviously need some some goggles to look after my eyesight can I ask you quickly what I'm what swim stroke will you be doing for the consensual swimming.
Whatever comes to mind. Whatever comes to mind. But yeah so being I'm heading out there I'll have to stock up my goggle collection and to do so I'll be using our partner who and their incredible discount they've given just to this podcast which is 60% of their entire range of goggles the code talking triathlon all lowercase one word talking triathlon will get you 60% of any pair of goggles their best open water goggles they say are the photo chromatic a photon they focus on reacting to the light and basically so if you're swimming in some way like somewhere absolutely beautiful like corner you can come up for a stroke. Consensual stroke and if the suns in your eyes the goggles will react and go dark and protect your eyes whereas when you turn back to shore and the suns out your eyes they'll clear up to allow you to see where you're going if.
If you if you don't need that kind of thing then they've also got the Altair which are the prescription goggles which you can have your own required prescription lenses put in so that you can see where you're going so those those nice see body turtles and dolphins and things you get to see them properly rather than just blurry lines in the sea because you never know might be a great white you're trying to be a friend you don't want to do that do you well that would be non consensual I think it was a great white that would be. Yeah but yeah it's not just those two goggles types that I've highlighted that the discount code works on works in their entire range 60% of everything stock up get yourself out to somewhere beautiful have a look under the water see what you can see you might see me yeah exactly and the the there be nothing better than you're out there swimming in the crystal clear waters of color obey and you're seeing sea turtles and you see the dolphins and you see the big the big group if you want to see the sea. Fish that swim just like yeah and then you see this absolutely majestic beast gliding through the water doing his his pace and then it's oh my god it's James Bell so yes do that you can also use the goggles when you've known why if you're at the pool or whatever like to see the black line or don't even want you goggles to fog up it's a good idea so you're who our partners great brand support them and they say continue to support us so thank you guys back to the show Jimbo.
There is only one thing to talk about now for the rest of the episode it is the biggest thing that happened in triathlete we can it was huge it's well triathlete on grand final time. It is indeed and what a few days of racing that was what did you think where do you want to start. I think we should talk through some of the I guess minor minor the lower events that we have said the Dometes again as grand final we also had the juniors which we spoke about last week we then had the under 23s and we also had some of the power but I in particular I just want to give a quick shout out to the under 23 men's race Michael Gar come in second. His dad is one of the patrons of this podcast Michael is an absolute upcoming star for team GB so congratulations to Michael but do you have the full list of results there I can quickly jump on world triathletes and you can't get the others. Yeah I've got the under 23 results. It was a French double for both the men and the women. Nils Siergeri on the men's side took the win in 146.01 ahead of Michael Gar they aforementioned ahead of Zalan Hobo from Hungary and then on the women's it was again a French athlete Ilona Hadoum in 158.11 ahead of Lea Hut also from France ahead of Sydney Clément from France.
Canada so yeah the French did well mate looking good they've got a bright future ahead of them in France say so that is very good now let us start with I think let's start with the women's race because it's it's so funny to me watching firstly these races were too am for me it was absolutely brutal for me to try to wake up first thing not check anything and not get anything spoiled I managed it for the men's race I didn't manage it for the men's race I didn't manage it for the men's race. The race was instantly spoiled from the moment I opened social media was it instantly but to be honest it probably I think if I had a watched it fully I mean I did watch it for a bit if I had a watched a blind I would have become pretty apparent very quickly what was going to happen in the race because what I was going to say is I feel like the WTCS ground final men and women's races played out extremely similarly to how the 70 points were watching championships played out in the women's race we had one female miles ahead of the women's race.
I had a lot of women's race ahead dominate win comfortably and in the men's race it was absolutely not so I do feel like there was quite a parallel but the women's race mate Quencast she goes on with the perfect season WTCS champion this is the first time we've seen her just go fuck it I'm not letting you guys hang about she got off the bike and she was gone just took off gone and everything else sort of happened behind it was probably the most boring WTCS race we've seen this year. There was something about it and now you're you're going to disagree with me I know you are because because you you you want that jeopardy you want that drama you want the excitement and that happened in the men's race we'll get there with that but there was some I messaged I had a chat with Will afterwards commentator and there was something very inspiring about watching Cassandra bro grand do what she did I found it quite sort of it was kind of quite deep in a sense it was like God I've got to do better you know I've got to try harder I'm because she rap wrapping up this perfect season where she's one she's one maximum points and she comes into the ground and all and just executes for her what is the perfect race you know she was there are there about some the swim
she was in the group on the bike and then absolutely just went off like a rocket on the run and I just I genuinely found it quite inspiring quite emotional and it made me think you know life is short and I've got to try harder I love this for you I love the philosophical impact that triathlon racing is having on you it's it's it's brilliant and I definitely like I mean when I said it's the most boring I did not find it boring to watch I found I meant I guess it was very it was very apparent very quickly one of the things we spoke a lot about this year with the women's racing was you had that group of five or six at the front together and then cast would go off at the last bit was literally this is the first time where she's just gone no I'm not going to do it. Today and I mean looking at her runs but when she ran a 3235 compared to 3341 from Georgia and a 34 or five from Kate you know there's no one there's no one close made like literally they're all just miles behind her it's it's so impressed like she's just had the perfect year and I feel like
after what happened to her last like interestingly I feel like Beth Potter might have had a bit it was a bit reminded me a little bit of last because Beth I thought was the one who would sort of run through for that second place and didn't. Yeah cast just was like not not again I'm not learning that happened again I'm going to come at you and it's been very interested because this whole year she said it's not really been a goal for her she's had the side quests in running that she's gone and dominated. And maybe she's unlocked something about her performance because she's been for us literally unbeaten absolutely yeah kind of pressure off you know she didn't look pressured and like well said in commentary she doesn't like it when people say are you look so serene and it looks so comfortable on the run because she assures you it's not. But and it's probably not. Don't give me a song she's running a 3235 10k you know it's hard work but she does look in control she looks under she doesn't look. Like she's under pressure she looks like she's you know she's meant to be there in the front of this race but yeah Cassandra bro ground took the win in 150 52 tell Georgia Taylor Brown came second in 150 157 with Kate Waffer rounding out the podium in 152 23 head of Beth Potter
Laura Lindemann Kirsten Casper great performance by Georgia Taylor Brown she rode she rode so hard on that bike leading basically every time the camera cut to the front of the women's race they were she was on the front she was on the front all the way up that hill and I don't think I've seen anyone work that hard on a bike WTCS solo style for a while. She said I was so determined to have a good swim when I was right when I was right by the front and saw it a small break I was like I just have to commit to this bike. I knew on a course like this I can't get a break way but I can at least make it hurt if it's hurting me it's hurting the girls more at the back I can try and string it out and I think that's exactly what happened I wasn't where it was happening behind me I was just like look forward go hard that's all I can do. And you could see that couldn't you can. As it as the racing transpire she was just absolutely gunning it. Georgia's performance is the like the as happy as I'm for cast and it was perfection.
Georgia's is the result that I feel the emotion about because I mean everybody loves Georgia Taylor Brown and it has been quite a interesting couple of years for Georgia so to see her come here come second when I probably didn't think she had it in her I even watching the race I expected her to get run down and to see her hold on and just made me made me so happy it was it was a really great performance of Georgia I really really enjoyed it. Yeah and that performance got her third place in the WTCS for non-standings as well obviously the WTCS Sandra Bregra one the WTCS championship Beth Potter came second Georgia Taylor Brown with this performance got herself into third ahead of Lisa Church so yeah I mean what an effort what a day. It's it's funny because I was quite surprised to see Georgia not go to 70.3 worlds this year after like literally having conversations with her in November last year when we were in Thailand together and I was a little disappointed to be honest that
she's sort of had made the decision of what appears focus on LA and then this happens I might not I'm happy now I think she's made a 100% the right decision she still has a lot to give to be honest it much like it does every year that team GB Olympic team is already looking difficult for the women because yeah I as often we say I'm glad I'm not a a a team GB selector because yeah God almighty your Schoenbeth Potter Georgia Kate's back great performance from Kate Woff to after a very bumpy year I suppose but then you've got like to the animal who's sort of coming through as well as you know so I mean we have to do it so the Evans had that horrible crash really really terrible to sit again I've not really heard much but I hope she's okay same with they've got Jess Fuller who missed the race because of concussion and they've got some great under 23s as well yeah I'm no it's Lisa Church defending champion she was in ninth place quite off the pace to be honest I think she was whether she finished 153
just she's you know three three minutes exactly back from Cass I feel like Cass probably wanted to send that message a little bit Jean Le Heer also was further back than I would have expected Leonie Perry the gap was impossible for Leonie to to bridge up the way that that race where she you know just didn't have you know she only wrote a 5821 to the others writing 56 so significant gap to overcome yeah I mean once you had that break away that that kind of front group and then you had Georgia Taylor Brown make a decision to absolutely commit to drilling the bike to try and hurt the athletes behind her as best she could I mean with your Georgia Taylor Brown that's the only route to beating Cassandra isn't it is to try and use that bike and that hill to try and put some pain into her legs it didn't work it wasn't gonna work but you see I love what fact she tried you put a Jess fuller get in this race and you've got Jess and Kate and Georgia or British funely enough I feel like maybe you could I still I really do believe Jess fuller get is the secret source when it comes to
beating maybe it's not Jess who's gonna actually win the race I still think she could you know she's made so many improvements last couple years I'm I mean I'm a huge Jess fuller fan I feel like if I think I think they know it I mean they obviously not they're a lot smarter about race than I am but I I feel like you just give my couple more um bows arrows in that quiver and yeah suddenly I think Cass could start to be under a little bit of threat but I mean the fact that she's riding basically a couple of seconds slower than she like Cass's flawless at the moment now some that isn't flawless I was one of the athletes who apparently finished fourth race of her life and then got a DQ as Marra Croco now what did you think about all of this mate yeah we didn't get it on camera did we we didn't get to see the incident but she mounted a bike before the mount line and apparently it was considerably before the mount line um and you know she's admitted that she made
that mistake she appealed it oh I broke the rule even if it was by accident I take full responsibility I apologize and honestly I feel really embarrassed about it and especially since I've never had a penalty in my life at the end of t1 there was a first smaller line with a cameraman and a huge camera on his shoulder was standing in the middle of the way completely blocking my view of the second correct one yes I know there's only one green line but when you're racing you don't always think clearly and after the swim your vision narrows so yeah it was it was a genuine mistake a genuine error um it was strange because during the race it was it was initially reported as a time penalty she was going to have to serve and then and then it was upgraded to a disqualification um and so she only really learnt about as she crossed the line what just after she crossed the line which can't have been easy when you when you finished in the ground final fourth place so I think the the the reason was originally it was a um a mountain line penalty for mountain before the mountain line but then
they got changed to ride in in transition um yeah just it's one of the stupid rules that I sometimes think I sometimes think for a sport is complicated as triathlon sometimes some of the stuff we have is a little bit silly like common sense with dictate she didn't ride in transitions like she rode from the the mountain line and you go okay yeah yeah yeah yeah it you know it wasn't it was it wasn't like she got on her bike at a transition point and rode it rode it through transition she she chose the wrong line got on her bike and would have rolled across the the mountain line um so yeah it I'd like you I tend to think common sense does should dictate that that's a pen there's time penalty for mounting before the uh mountain line it's not really a penalty for riding in transition but I tell you I what I really do think though is there needs to become a more consistent approach to how they police this stuff because I would argue that her race didn't disqualified and it was a
parent she was disqualified before she finished the race like that impacts the rates having her running with Kate Woff that advantageous Kate because Kate has somebody to work with to try to run up to and and I feel like there was a I can't remember who it was but we saw when they came out of the swim or maybe there was somebody go to stand penalty at um try at at their bike like I just feel like there's too much and I understand because what they'll do now often their athlete will continue race and then I'll appeal at the end which which mod a crop code did I just I don't it's similar to what we saw in the tier 100 day with the lap d'athlete running with the the lead group there needs to be something because there is a very real impact of having athletes around other athletes in in triathlon so I do feel like they need to come up with a better I don't know how I don't know what it is I'm not going to try to come up with it now but I I think now that we know that she was so qualified they make a decision agree stopper agree but that that needs to be like you say athletes will continue the race and appeal afterwards and I agree with you I'd
rather that wasn't allowed as someone's dequeed rather because they will there was no guarantee that appeal will stand and they will impact the race then you've also got to consider in a race environment like that if she's running with Kate Woff how do you as a referee communicate to her that she's been disqualified without impacting Kate Woff race as well without Kate Woff thinking that you're speaking to her I get Michael Thompson on the case mate he'll now do it Michael Thompson's the big red flag yeah disqualified um I feel like you're and to be honest this is probably good example because this I'm sorry that I don't know what grounds you can appeal like no for more reports it was very obvious so I I I don't know the answer but I do feel like this is something that doesn't need to be looked at because yeah it's just it's a bit of a it's a bit of a blight on what was otherwise a very very successful grandfather there's one thing I want to say about this right well two things I'm going to say go for it firstly um I've never lived
in an era I've watched triathlon my whole life I've never lived in an era where the broadcast of the sport has actually been an enter truly entertaining package that brings me a sport I really want to watch the whole thing you know I used to watch triathlon and just be it was just like well the race is on I want to see what the result is and you just try your best and you pick things out and the commentary was uninspiring if there was any you'd have fixed cameras but we're living in an era where the broadcast is exceptional the commentary is exceptional will and Belinda are doing an amazing job bringing it to life because you can feel their passion and they true enjoyment of this sport they're not just reporting on what they're seeing they're like living it with you as a viewer and I'm here for that but to follow that in this race we did the I don't know whether they had a plan for like well we have to watch these athletes come out going to T1 and then when the second group gets to T1 we have to go back and watch them we miss the the one really
interesting bit in the run where Cassandra dropped Georgia Tater Brown and that was frustrating yeah I agree with that I firstly we will talk about Will and Belinda there's a particular moment that has been highlighted on such media this week a lot that I think sums up the incredible work that they are both doing but you're right we also never really saw a replay of a modicorp co's mounting like you're right there's a lot of things that I mean similar with many houses the last last race where we never really saw what happened like it is the one the one there's I guess there's not enough fluidity is that a word in their broadcast where they can pivot and change and you know I think you're right they've got a very structured sort of plan of what to do and it's it's the gold standard in triathlon moment but again constantly evolving yeah totally and that's not a criticism it's just an acknowledgement no I absolutely loved it well let's move it because we actually didn't really well for time all of a sudden let's move to the men's race because oh my god oh my god James Bell it feels like we have constantly having these exceptionally
exciting races for the last 12 but in particular it feels like last 12 months we've seen women's women's Hawaii last year was maybe the most stressed I've been watching a race I thought and then we come to we come to jolong and it's exciting and then we go to ocean side it's exciting and then we go to 70.3 worlds and it's exciting and then we come to this and holy shit so you do watch the men's race alive didn't you no it was 2am so I got up and watched the replay but I didn't check any I did not check my phone so I got to watch it fresh yeah so it was it was bloody good wasn't it max it was bloody good even even the weirdness of like the pontoon braking and then we'll all be sort of stranded like seals trying to get onto an iceberg with a with a great white attack in them from behind it was it was like what is happening here and then yeah I don't think that made that bigger difference to be I did see people saying I was just a weirdly entertaining moment yeah I did see comments about oh that's impacted Hayden's I don't think it would have but
yeah just sorry keep going mate it was fucking sorry I'm eating fudge the it became it became fairly evident fairly quickly I thought that we weren't going to get the world championship impact as in we were going to get baskevilasa most likely finishing where he needed to finish to get the world championship result that he wanted so for me the importance of the race kind of drifted away from the world championship result and just became this frantic one-off grand final event where Matt Howzer was given the opportunity to say yeah I'm not going to win the world championship but I'm not just going to let you have this race I'm going to I'm going to show you how hard you have to work to beat me and you ain't going to beat me and that was the brutal
joy of the race for me the the the real excitement for me apart from the sprint finish but it was Alex yeah like like honest honest honest to God this race had this weird nostalgic thing where we saw Alex and Hayden get off the bike relatively close Hayden wearing that stupid bucket hat and I'll continue to call it stupid Hayden if you're listening I will say to your face I think that bucket hat is stupid I like a bucket hat the hair thing's weird and I had this moment where you see Hayden and Alex together shoulders to shoulder running faster than every other person on the course and I'm like oh my god this feels like this feels like two years ago like there was something very very nostalgic about it and then Hayden went bye bye bye Hayden and Alex ran a tour was it a 2840 is it 2846 10k something crazy like crazy make and he was up to the front of the race within within yeah 2046 which isn't actually the fastest 10k recorded a big fuck off hill mate that big fuck off
yeah exactly exactly and also this is the they say while I've got you here so he ran a when winning WCS Caligari in 2023 he clocked to 2031 but in pace terms it was actually a um ponta veradria was actually a 10 point was it 10.1 kilometer course whereas Caligar was reportedly near a 9.9 so there's a difference there and also you've got that big fuck off hill on this one just watching him man was traveling and he ran an incredible 10k but as soon as he caught Hauser and Velasa and didn't pass them yeah I knew he wasn't going to win the race yeah I was like he has the same he has emptied himself to get onto the back of that group and anybody all of us we've all raised at different levels we know that if you're fighting that hard to get on the back of a
group if you've got it to go pass them you go fucking pass them and you give them the finger as you do but he didn't he latched onto the back and I was like well that's that then it's going to be a sprint between the two boys ahead of it and it was so it wasn't what a finish for that final kilometer so there's a lot there's a lot okay now I will admit I am Australian and I adore Matt Hauser not just professionally but I think Matt is a wonderful like like honestly one of the best people in triathlon every time I've ever interacted with Matt he's like he comes to when we've done the camps on the goal cause we've had Matt come a bunch of times he's so great with the kids he's just a really like everybody in a Tyler Mizicchuk could not most speak highly of Matt Hauser I know you as well there's been a lot of comments online about the sprint finish what are your thoughts about so for people that's sprint finished as they've come into what's aligned Matt he has definitely drifted towards VASCO people are claiming that he was blocking
it should have been a DQ or penalty what do you think no I've watched it and I've I've when I when I watched it live it was enough of a drift for my head to say people are going to say something about that but it wasn't anywhere near enough of the drift to really impede VASCO Matt Hauser was already a shoulder ahead of him and it was a slight drift to the left but it was it was one of those drifts where you were racing on the ragged edge and you're desperate to get ahead and it would have been a subconscious thing it wouldn't have been a conscious vision to try and block VASCO and if I'm honest there was a there was a brief touch of arms but that was it it wasn't it didn't impede VASCO any more he couldn't if if if that drift hadn't happened VASCO couldn't have gained any additional ground it didn't it didn't impede it I actually would have thought the drift meant that he probably because if if not all of your momentum is going purely forward I actually
think you're probably like I don't understand it yeah I'm not talking about Hauser's pace I'm talking about it didn't impact VASCO's pace I guess I was saying that he means he's actually traveling further because he's not just going in a straight line he's actually going on a slight angle but I will say that there was a moment because of how the finish line was where it wasn't a flush finish line there was actually like slightly so if you got the finish shoot the the finish line structure was like inside that so there was probably I don't know less than a meter either side of the finish barricades the side barricades that you'd have to come in there was a moment where I thought is he pushing him so that he's actually not going to be able to get through the finish and then they got and was absolutely not the case I understand people saying it's the carry on the absolute outrage from mostly Portuguese people are based on the stuff I've seen I just think is a little it's I don't think this is a DQ I think it's exciting racing and I think we actually should encourage like we get these incredible moments and of course there's going to be outrage and of course so I kind of get it but I do think it was a bit much and people who are
anybody having a go at Matt Hauser I think is completely unjustified the guy is an absolute gentleman of the sport yeah and he did acknowledge it afterwards he said I mean there was there was a little bit of dust that happened the dog in you in the fight and it it was an intentional I don't think it was anyway worth a penalty or worth it's worth this guy sporting it discuss it's great I love to take it down the pub I did say to you after the race my only thing and again I don't love I wish that was for the the world championship I wish that that sprint finish was for the actual title because you said it to be very apparent that it was going to be fast I think yeah I had to separate the two things in my head I had to be like Hauser is going to prove a point here and that became the importance of the race for me was two men trying to prove a point about each other to each other but look they both knew coming into this season how the world it's not like it was a surprise that that it wasn't the final race for the world championship and the last that has had the season that he needed to have to win that was a worthy
world champion but yeah there's it's a it's a very defensible argument that Matt Hauser is the better athlete this year I also think that moment so it's on the world triathlon instagram bill will and Belinda in the commentary box comment and sprint finish this is what triathlon commentary should be because there's another universe where it's not will and Belinda and the commentary is is very much more like and here they come and it's looking quite close and shoulder shoulder it looks like Matt Hauser has won the race like that's a commentary we could have had in if it was an Iron Man and a police go yeah so like we now have people doing what I believe sports broadcast should be will and Belinda are the absolute standard and I want to see them do everything so yeah just they need to be permanent everything what did I say I had a chat with Will and I said well done brilliant game blue load of smoke up as I said it was great but then I said well no
nothing you can or will ever do will come close to the sonic squeak Belinda emitted during that men's men's sprint because it was I thought my cat was having a stroke at one point I love Belinda grandeur and she's yeah it was her excitement patch for the sport is real and that's moments like that you really really see it so um anyway we're done that it was an incredible way to finish this is we're not done for 2026s WTSC we do have one race left hold up the final stand is on the men's side the WTSC with ask over last round first place Matt Hauser in second Ricardo Batista in third Dorian Connick's the 2028 LA gold medalist in fourth ahead of Matt Hidalgo Alex Yee amazing Miguel Hidalgo not Matt Hidalgo yeah um yeah look we're done we've got to go I've got to go mate we've got to wrap this up so if people want to find out more about talking to our phone what do they need to do if you want to support the show jump on at patreon.com forward slash talking triathlon if you want to follow team is
