606 in the Queen City of Cincinnati, Chick-Lunwick, 700 WLW, 4 rock-and-hours of sports talk. Leading into UC Arizona, Big 12 football, Joe Wadell is tonight's producer, and we're coming out of the gate strong talking Cincinnati Reds baseball. And from a playoff birth and a quick postseason exit in 2025, to a last place finish in the NL Central Division in 2026, it sure has been a turbulent year for the Reds. And I appreciate the perspective of our first guest. He's the Reds Beat Writer for the Enquirer in Cincinnati.com. My first time interviewing the great Gordon Whitmer. You can follow him on Twitter at G-Dub MLB Gordon. How the heck are you today? I'm doing a lot better than the Reds because I'm still alive. Yes. And how about this for a loaded first question. Where do the Reds go from here?

Hopefully up. Well, they ain't going to go down unless they expand their division to six teams. Look, man, I don't know. I mean, I have a hard time imagining a path back to the playoffs in one year. They do have a couple of front-line guys, right? We saw what Sal did. I mean, that's very encouraging. Chase Burns did. It's very encouraging. Ellie Dela Cruz got better. These are all things that are encouraging signs. But everybody else took a step back or just was a non-factor. They found no other depth in the organization. And they found no other depth from the outside when they added. I mean, they brought in Jay-Jay Blade. That turned out to be a good deal, but he's not in everyday play. He's more of a platoon guy. They may or the same thing. There are so many issues and there were so many breakdowns with this club that in an off season when you're going to have a labor. And we don't know how long that's going to last. I just don't know what they can do.

You can bet that they're not going to sign any free agents before the December 1st lockout. So that leaves them whatever comes on the other side short of any in-house moves they might make. Do you bring back Tyler Stevenson? I don't know. It just seems like there's way too many things to fix. Yeah. To turn this last place team into a playoff team in what has proven at least certainly this last and better national league than the American League. Gordon Whitten-Miers with us from the Yan Choir and Cincinnati dot com and president and CEO Phil Castellini has spoken. The Castellini family isn't selling the club. He supports Nick Crawl and Brad Meadow and collectively they're taking responsibility for the club's struggles with promises to do better. But there's so many issues like you mentioned with his team's personnel from the pitching staff, the starters and the bullpen, the catching situation, the outfield, the infield,

coordinates every area. How far behind are they? Man, they're they're being left in the dust. Yeah, it's I don't I go back to the same thing. I just don't see the path. There's one thing. There's one that stabilize their competitiveness next year. And that's if that starting rotation sort of returns to 2025 form, which isn't world beaters, but just good all the way through like good 5D and stays healthy. If you can do that and then and then a gone couple. He doesn't have a guy that had a sub two ERA since he returned from injury this year. But if he was a guy that was a two and a half three ERA guy and saved 80% of his save chances, then you got a ninth inning. You can count on and and you got a rotation.

That was what got him there in 25 that massive. They were competitive and they have the right manager. Every Gordon up what drive? Yeah, what drives we we lost you there for a second Gordon, but what drives fans absolutely crazy, probably you too, because I know it drives me nuts too. The situational hitting the inability to drive in runs with runners and scoring position. You got a guy on second or third and then a Matt McLean instead of pushing the ball to the right side and manufacturing a run. It's the ball to the shortstop or the third basement and they're like the anti brewers who do anything and everything to scratch out runs and the reds can't do it. Well, it shows up in a way that makes it really conspicuous and like a red flare when you see it when you're scoring is such on the low side anyway.

I mean, we're scoring team in major league baseball. Every time you don't score a run that you think you should have scored, it's massively conspicuous. The problem is not what they're doing with men in scoring position. It's getting men in scoring position. They have the worst on base percentage. They hit the worst overall. If you're not getting on base, you can't score runs. It's one of the close, it's one of the stats that close, most closely, runs to scoring runs of any other statistic that's not actually runs scored and they don't do it very well. So it's personnel. It's not situational awareness or anything else. It's quality of the personnel. They need better players. Absolutely. That's what the Lancet McAllister has been screaming about, same here on Reds extra Endings and what we saw late, you know, this season, I was saying out with the old and in with the new and they're trying to figure out who can help this team next season.

And that's why we're seeing Hector Rodriguez and Carlos Jorge and and Brito and some of these younger guys to see, gosh, can they be a factor next year? I don't know. We'll see come spring. If there is a spring, but yeah, I've just had enough of, you know, the, yeah, the TJ Freedles, the, gosh, even the Matt McClain's and of course, keep Brian Hayes, who's owed 23 million dollars. Yeah. He's low. Hang, it's really easy to criticize that you criticize him at the time. The move was valuable at the time that move helped make them a playoff team. They had a deficit defensively at third base and they had a deficit offensively and defensively in right field at the time they made that move by making that move and putting the well being right field, you upgraded both sides in right field and you upgraded one

side at third base. So you had a deficit in three out of four spots. Now you had an asset in three out of four spots counting those two visits at the time the deal was okay. Now if you can handle seven million a year between now and the time is contracts up in a few years, you know, it's not, it's not debt estate. But if you, if you can't handle that seven million and you have to play this guy and he has to perform for you, then it becomes a problem going forward. But at the time, it was not a terrible move. Problem is you just, you got, you don't have enough guys that can cover that. Like if you, if you could put him at the bottom of the line and you had six, seven guys, you, production, then he's just going to fall into a certain level of production just by showing up and you'll be able to cover for what he doesn't give you. They would have been fine, but the massive breakdowns all the way across the board is what hurt this. It's not a good team. It's not a good, best year when they brought really pictures from the miners.

Those guys performed right? Maxxel and, you know, he had a walk problem in the miners. He looked better down the stretch form. He made the playoff roster. Connor, but really good down the stretch last year. Didn't look good this year. Turned out you couldn't rely on those guys. So when you talk about the Carlos Jorge, the world and the head throughout the world, they look good. They look like something players that could grow into something and maybe they will. You can't count on that going in the next year. You can't say, well, between the two of those guys, we can fill a position. You can't because you just don't know that you didn't see enough. You saw enough to maybe say, okay, we'll keep those guys in mind. But if you're planning to make the playoffs next year, that is one long to do list of player acquisitions, basically. Gordon, Witten Myers with us from the Enquirer and Cincinnati.com. And as far as Key Brian Hayes, I've never seen a guy who makes contact.

He hits the ball, but it's soft contact or it and it's for outs. I just, the ball can't find green grass. It's crazy. He's not here. He was statistically the worst hater in baseball this year. I mean, I think that we can talk about that all day long if you want. So the issue becomes, can you carry him as a role player? Because if you can, maybe he can do something for you. If you need him as a starter, you're in big, friggin' trouble. So that's his year. Speaking of a guy that really is my favorite player and missing dearly down the stretch with Spencer Steer, the Swiss Army knife on this team playing five positions. How bad was his, did his injury hurt this club? Yeah, I agree with you. I consider him a linchpin of that lineup. And what I mean by that is like, you know, you got your, he's not the best hater in the lineup. He doesn't do this or that best of anybody in that lineup.

He's really consistent. You can count on a good at bat, comment. He cannot provide a little bit of protection for some guys. He can play like you said. A number of positions that do him well, well enough that, I mean, at a level. They don't have a lot of guys like that are just good, solid, major league, every eight players. He's one of those guys. And you pick him out of lineup that has no depth. It's really short, really fast. And that's what happened. I think he was the most underrated injury of the season for these guys. And we know they had a bunch of them and they had, they had a lot of ties get hurt. But I think it kind of gets lost. How important he was to just making that lineup function at a baseline major league level. And when he was gone, it was just, I mean, it wasn't even, it was less than rolling the dice when you put that line up out there without him. No doubt. And Gordon, South Stewart, what a year, what a player.

I say that he's Pete Rose, wrapped in Scott Roll and tucked inside Tony Perez. I love the guy. I love his attitude. He's a hard-nosed player. He said at the end of the season, what was most prep was that he played every day, whether he felt sick or was banged up. And that is a big deal. That's a really big deal, especially for a young player. To your point, he feels throwback. And probably that's from, I'm in Miami with some guys that were already established. The Manip achares, Yonder Lanzo's in the world. He worked out with those guys from the time he was 15 years old. So he understands the value of posting and, and by the way, the value of a good at that. I mean, this guy takes us good at a fat as anybody in that lineup. And so, I suspect we saw little inconsistency down the stretch from him as he played his longest season of his life. And I think that as we go into next year, he's a guy who may be more than some young players.

I would bank on for improvement in, you know, it may not be the same number of home runs. And in our BI's, can flex a weight based on opportunities. I think you're going to see even improvement in the at bats and the quality of everyday play from this guy as he goes forward because I think he's that kind of a player. He wants, he works hard and he gets it. Whether it's first base or third or second. Yes. Yeah. I, I, first. I think we lost you there for a second, Gordon. What position do you like him at? Oh, I said, I believe in that first base. I think he can, he can turn out to be a really good first base. Ellie Day La Cruz becomes the fourth player in Red's history. 30, 30 guy. Wow. You're right. He improved dramatically. When he does commit an error, it is me.

It hurts. It, it, teams made it hurt against him. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, they're still, and I'm going to bat in the end. What this guy is, is a better shortstopper, whether he'd be better off both offensively and made defensively in the outfield. And on that, that debate will carry into his wherever he goes next, put it that way. Whether it's a, your, trade or pre-agency. But I tell you what, the 30, 30, if anything, you know, we saw that coming from the time he was a rookie and, and, you know, 40, 40s on the table with this guy for sure. And Chase Burns, you just hope that this, this awesome season can, can get repeated. And then it's not Tony Santianish. Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, one of the things that Chase Bernhard has is, is a baseball gene similar to South

Stewart. He's really freaking competitive. Like, you know, I've covered a lot of guys over the years. I've just gained for three decades at the major league level. And there's a handful of guys. I could probably count on two hands. It stand out to me, two in the mountain, as guys that are, everybody's competitive at a big league level. You don't get there if you're not. He has that are, that are ultra competitive in a way that stands out if they're major leagueers. And he has that. And so whether it shows up in the numbers again, because he's got some big numbers to try to back up next year, whether it shows up exactly in the numbers, you'll, you'll see it think in, in performance in probably innings. I think you'll see, you know, some big outs at times that strike you as well at a clutch moment for that guy. He barring any sort of an injury. I expect him to grow next year as well.

And for it to show up in some of the numbers. And maybe that's just, you know, maybe that's just innings. So are the reds kind of being should. Yeah, are the reds back in a corner here with Tyler Stevenson, like they must have him. No, I don't think so because you see, you look around the game and there's a lot of teams that have success by kind of piecing together, catching. You know, they've got a veteran guy in Jose Truvillo, his good club, us guys. He's one of gold club, although he hasn't been the player behind the plate that he was with the Yankees when he won that. And he's not an everyday player because he just simply doesn't hit well enough. But they've got, you know, some guys and assists, Bamfield came up, Pete, Pete wet, he can be some depth. If you went out and got another major leaker, he wouldn't necessarily have to be, you know,

a top notch, top free agent type. You could piece together some stuff until Alfredo Duno, their top prospect, starts coming around. He may be in line for a debut at some point next year, certainly the year after. So it's not like you don't have to go overpay what you think Tyler Stevenson's work to bring it back. I do think there's desire on his part to come back though. I do think there's opportunity to negotiate with him. If you think he's worth a certain salary, maybe you can negotiate him to that point. And so I think you should do that. I think you should look to do that. But I don't think he has a motorbarrot. And one last thing here on Ellie, due to become a free agent in 2030, gosh, you just wonder how much longer he's going to be a red. Yeah, I, you know, I just say, don't shoot the messenger here. Just everything based on talking to his agent, even based on kind of home when I talk to him.

And where the team is, I would be surprised if he makes it with the club during the entirety of his club control. First of all, I'd be absolutely shocked if he signs an extension. They've been down that road with him. He's not going to sign for anything less than what his thinks is market value. And that may be more than what turns out to be market value. Who knows, but he's not going to give a discount. So they're not going to sign him. So then it becomes when do you trade him? Honestly, when do you get the most value? It's, you know, I'm not talking about next year, but it might be, it might be a year from now, a half from now might be, you know, with a year plus to go on his club control. And, you know, that, that'll be a sad day for the Cincinnati Reds, for sure. All this optimism, Gordon. Wow. I'm right there with you, man. I am right there with you. This isn't football where you can rebuild in a year. It's like the defense of the Cincinnati Bangles, man. There are just so many issues, so many problems. And we'll just wait and see what happens here with this club.

And we really, really appreciate your time tonight. Yeah, you got it. Thanks so much. At Gordon Witt and Meyer, you can follow him on Twitter at G Dub MLB. He does a fantastic job with the N choir and Cincinnati dot com. And when we come back after the bottom of the hour news, something that we will never, ever see again. 635 in the Queen City of Cincinnati, Chick-Lungwig. 700 WLW. This is sports talk. We're going all the way to 10 o'clock tonight leading into UC Arizona football. Want to update a couple of scores here. Ohio State with 632 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Buck Eyshebe 31 to 14 lead over the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City. Kentucky, the 24th ranked Wildcats, Trail South Carolina at the 645 mark of the third quarter, 20 to 17. And the Miami Red Hawks are attempting to hang on to a 20 to 17 lead in the final seconds of this game. And bowling green has the ball at Miami's 14 yard line with 18 seconds to go. So Miami's hoping to hold on to a 20 to 17 victory.

Back in 1996, I was part of a coverage team covering the Buck Eyshebe at Iowa. And I got into the Visitors locker room. And yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is pink. They try to calm you and trick you into losing at Kinex Stadium. It's a very, very tough place to play. And in that game, gosh, both teams ranked and Joe Montgomery with Orlando pace leading him down the field for a monster touchdown and a, yeah, just remember going to Iowa City with Mark Katz or Ohio State beat rider. But anyway, one of the great games in Buck Eyshebe against Iowa.

Remember the name Bob White from Covington, Kentucky playing for the Ohio State University and his performance on November 16, 1957 pivotal for the Buck Eys. White was a third string fullback, but he led the Buck Eyshebe to a dramatic 17 to 13 victory. And the Buck Eyshebe were trailing 13 to 10 late in the game. And Bob White executed a remarkable drive carrying the ball on six of the eight plays and gaining 66 of the 68 yards needed for the winning touchdown, which he scored on a five yard run. And the performance not only secured the victory, but helped Ohio State clinch the Big Ten championship in a spot in the Rose Bowl. And after the game, Iowa coach Forest Evishevsky brought up the term three yards and a cloud of dust watching Bob White

go 66 yards of the 68 needed for the winning touchdown drive. So three yards and a cloud of dust that was Bob White for the Buck Eyshebe in 1957 when the Chester was only three years old. Hey, I've got my coffee, I've got my computer. All I need is you at 5137497,800. The big one Gordon Whitmer, let us off tonight with some in depth reds discussion. And there are just so many issues and problems with the reds right now that you just wonder how they're going to recoup and regroup for the 2027 season if there is one. I would imagine there will be a lockout, there will be a work stoppage with the collective bargaining agreement expiring after the World Series.

And hopefully at some point baseball will resume in 2027. But let's go out to the phones. I'm with you till 10 o'clock tonight leading into UC Arizona football. And we've got Rick in Dallas. Rick. I just finally got you a long, long time. No, it's been a while, Rick. It's been a while. Yeah. Do you remember the game that I could have made a break? It could have made a break. UC football. It was back in 2002 when they almost beat the bucket. I remember that. Oh, yes. I don't know. I can't remember the year, but I certainly remember it. It was at Paul Brown Stadium. Yeah. And can you imagine the implicate who they have pulled out? And so that was the year that they that one at the year that a buck out won the championship too. All I know is if the bear cats would have won, it would have been Armageddon in Columbus. No doubt about it.

And and I get back to the ribs. I like to know what can somebody please tell me what is the secret sauce that the Milwaukee. What do you think the Milwaukee Brothers? Yeah. The Milwaukee Brothers. What is that secret sauce? I like to know. I think we all would. They manufacture runs. They don't hit a lot of home runs, but man, they get them on. They get them over and they get them in and they don't have a lot of big stars. How are they doing that? Oh, that's that's why it's a secret. And hey, it's all coming down here with the division series and the postseason for the Milwaukee Brothers. They have failed in the past and they are an awesome team. The best record in baseball. Well, they host the San Diego Padres tonight at 830 and the March to the World Series is going on

right now. And the bear cats and air Zola. Well, just that. They're the prior. Oh, 4 and 0 against 3 and 1 and the guy they have to contain. They're not going to be able to stop him, but the guy they have to contain is Noah Fafita. He's listed at 510. He's the quarterback of the year's zone of wild cats. He's listed at 510. That's being generous. He's more like 5859, but he is outstanding. All right. Running and throwing. I think go go bear cats. Amen. Late night tonight, 11 p.m. Kick off 8 o'clock out in Tucson. I'm staying up late. Okay, you do the same. Thank you. Sue is in Cincinnati. Hi, Sue. Well, hi, Chuck. Well, I have a question. Um, um, the division games. How many do you have to win to be in it? Three out of five. Oh, I saw the five. I'm

watching that at the end of the Dodgers. And I thought, oh, thanks. Uh, three instead of the two. Okay. Well, um, I know you're going to be up late, but, um, I don't think so. I have too much going on. All right, Sue. Sunday, but I'm glad to be able to talk to you in the postseason. Yeah. Good luck for your bangle. Oh, yeah. They're, they're going to need it tomorrow. They're going to need it. Absolutely. And your evening chill, which, um, closes at a good time. Yeah. All right. Thanks so much. And the Los Angeles Dodgers have a five to three lead at Chavez ravine Dodger Stadium in the top of the ninth inning with Atlanta batting. And earlier today, the Chicago white socks have defeated the Cleveland Guardians shutting out the Guardians three to nothing in Cleveland. Is that division series in the American league gets going? Never thought I'd say it, but it's a great day to be

a Cleveland fan. The Cleveland Browns are three and one with a negative 14 score differential. They're three and one after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. Let's go out to the phones. Welcome in Kevin in Columbus. Hi, Kevin. Great to talk to you. Yeah. Yeah. You two are the guy you talked about the red. This sounds like how you talk about the Bengals back in about 2002. Yeah. He wasn't very encouraging for anything. Oh, I know. I know. It's, uh, you know, and because there might not be a seed, it might have had a any blade, but that's how I feel. And hey, that guy talked about it was in 2002 where you see come close to beat no high. I'll skate. I ended up beating Miami of Florida for the for the national championship. Yeah. And why is Ohio State too good to play at Nipper? I always wondered that even back then, you know, but well, maybe they just, yeah, you know, it's play there.

Oklahoma, you saw it all other time. Oh, my God. I dream of the day. Ohio State. I dream of the day. Ohio State and Notre Dame played the bear cats at Nipper Stadium. I mean, that's a story. They can't get rid of that stadium. I don't care what they can't know to that. But the wriggly field of college football. Yeah. But back then, I'm talking about with the reds. And I mean, I love the reds, but I'm crushed by how the season went. And of course, now we're talking the Bengals are going to be so great and boy, if they don't win tomorrow, that's going to be the panic button to, you know, two and two, man, it's, uh, yeah, it's not going to be fun. I was shocked at the way they were just moving the ball. The Steelers were there a whole quarterback and I was convinced we were going to win cards at just one game. No, the panic, but again, we're so star for a winner check. Maybe you've got something to say about that. Oh, well, uh, here with you got to say, thanks. Well, like I told, thank you, Kevin and Columbus. And like I told Bruce Kuzersky last week, our, uh, my co-host on post game sports talk. All it takes

is one play to get you beat. The Bengals had four plays that got him beat. The, the two special teams errors, two on one play, making it three. And then, uh, Joe's, uh, sack fumble recovery. And, uh, all of a sudden, a team that you should be dominating beats you. And I can see getting beat by a better team, but not beating yourself. And that's what happened to the Cincinnati Bengals last week. Hey, we've got Alex and Dayton. Hi, Alex. How's it going, buddy? Good. Good. What's on your mind? I feel like I've called in like four times in the last like a couple of days, but, um, first of all, I, I called in about an hour ago and I wanted to say, uh, very special happy birthday to Moe Hager. Absolutely. He deserves it. So, um, but what I wanted to say though is,

I hope that Dan Horde is getting some kind of bonus because, this dude is literally going to be on a plane at like four in the morning after doing the Bearcats game. And he's going to be at the stadium before 1 p.m. tomorrow. This is wild. It really is. It really is. And that's why he's the best. He is an absolute trooper. He is amazing. Like he's a great broadcaster and the fact that he's willing to do this, and they're actually putting it through it. It's insane. So I hope he gets some kind of bonus out of it, but he's amazing. And, and we appreciate him immensely. Totally agree his knowledge, his enthusiasm, and he's got such a pleasing listening voice. He's, uh, he's absolutely phenomenal. Yeah, I listen to you. Uh, I listen to W-W-W literally all day. Like I, I have it on my,

on my phone when I fall asleep and unfortunately, Red Eye Radio comes on. And that's, obviously, it's as much pleasing as you might, might be able to tell, but, uh, usually like if you're on late at night or Willie, his wild head, loved death, but, uh, I listen to you guys all day. I appreciate you guys all. Well, really appreciate that. Alex and Dayton, my adopted hometown, from Cincinnati to the gem city. Really appreciate it. Thank you. Absolutely. I appreciate it. All right. Beautiful. And Tom is in Madera. Hi, Tom. Good. I check. How you doing? Good. Good. Uh, there are a little scratchy there. You can barely hear you. Yeah. Oh, um, let's see. That's a little better. Yeah. A little better. Okay. Okay. Yeah, that's interesting. My, my whole family is from, from Dayton. Um, and, uh, from Oakwood. I say, oh, yeah. Yeah. Beautiful.

Beautiful. South Suburb. Right? Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but I was just wondering, I think I asked you this before. Um, I have every faith and, you know, the, the bear cats, I mean, the well, they're cats and the bagels. Gotta just stay the course and, you know, not let these little injuries or what misshaps and things, you know, get them down. They just gotta keep, you know, because there is good football team. Yeah. They've got a nipped this in the bud tomorrow. And that's why they signed these veterans. These guys are leaders and they're going to have to show it tomorrow. And yeah. Yeah. This Jacksonville club since, since the, they're by week of 2025, they are 11 and three. And seven of the games, their quarterback Trevor Lawrence has, departed early because of, uh, blowouts. So this is a quality quality team. Right. Right.

There is one question, um, magging me a little bit. Why I saw the game on Thursday. Um, I, I never get an answer for it. They, why did the Browns, uh, the stadium, um, the Cleveland Browns organization? What have you seen the size of that new stadium and all the amenities and all the things that come with it? I have not seen all of it. No, um, okay. But they wanted a new, yeah, they wanted a new stadium. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, more than what they had. And I just wondered, why did they get, you know, so much more money to stand on a stadium, rather than what we do. I mean, I know our stadiums are older. But I thought it should be equal. Shouldn't it? The Browns should get as much to build their stadium as we get to build it. I wish it was equal, but it's not. Yeah. And it's not. I'm leaving that to the politicians. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.

Well, I'll be up at 11 at 11 o'clock tonight. Kick off kick off at 11 and all the coverage starts right here on 700 WLW at 10. All right. I appreciate you. Yeah. Just stay the course. I think. Oh, yes, we will. Thank you so much. Tom. I tease this. I tease this at the bottom of the hour, but something that we'll never see again is one person, the same person coaching the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University men's basketball teams. Tay Baker, who died on Tuesday at the age of 99, was the head coach at UC from 1965 through 1972. And Bill Cook, longtime sports writer and Cincinnati with the post and with the end choir, wrote a real nice piece about Tay Baker on his Facebook page. And Tay was out of coaching for one

year after he was replaced by Gail Catlett. And then he resurfaced at Xavier to replace Dick Campbell after the Muscatires had gone three and 27 in the year in the season 1972 to 73. And it was their fifth straight losing season for Xavier. And they truly were at the bottom of the barrel, Xavier basketball at the Nader when when Tay Baker took over. And Baker was five and two against Xavier as UC's head coach, but oh and six against the bear cats while he was the Muscatires head coach. And I remember him as an assistant at UC during their glorious two year run as an assistant to Ed Jucker when the bear cats won the 1961 and 1962 national championships over the Ohio State Buckais. And even though I'm an OSU grad school of journalism 1976, I grew up on UC basketball.

And on Bill Cook's post, Tay Baker talked to Bill for a book that Bill wrote about the cross-town shootout. And Baker had a great experience at Xavier grew to love Xavier University. However, when push came to shove his true alliance, his true allegiance, he said, I've got UC blood in me. So, May Tay Baker rest in peace, age 99 passed on Tuesday. Coming up after the top of the hour news, Joe Goodbury, we're going to be talking Bengals football at the top of the seven o'clock hour. I hope you'll stay tuned. He's host of Locked On Bengals. That podcast and check him out the Bengals on the brain on YouTube. Let's welcome it. Our good friend Joe. Good, Barry. Joe, how we doing tonight doing great. Check. Thanks for having me on again. Oh, fantastic. And

Joe, it's not a misprint despite a negative 14 point differential. The Cleveland Browns are atop the AFC North Division at three and one and the Bengals are trying to catch them with a win tomorrow against Jacksonville. Can't wait for the one o'clock kick off tomorrow, man. Yeah, big cat battle. Right? If if this wasn't a game where the Bengals are coming off that loss to the Steelers, this would be a very, very high profile game. I is still one of the best of the week. I think we only have three teams or I'm sorry, three games where both teams are winning records right now. And this is one of them. So it's getting some national run. But I think if the Bengals would have won that Steelers game, we'd be talking about this like a playoff preview. The Jackson one, 13 games last year. They're probably going to win that division, right? Yes. You would be looking at this like, oh, man, this is one of those chief Ravens, builds type matchups that we can't wait for. And I feel like we're a little bit too quiet. I'm excited for this one. Oh, no doubt.

And before we look ahead to tomorrow at one o'clock, can we just look back for a minute the last week? And it seems you had this on your ex page at Joe Goodbury. Looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line doing some funny business against some of the D line veterans for the Cincinnati Bengals. Yeah, that's right. Every time I watch film and I do this pretty much all of Monday and Tuesday every single week. And I like to point out things that are weird or different or sometimes funny, you know, as I'm looking for X is an old player evaluation. Sometimes my eyes are drawn to something I've never seen before. And this was one of them where the Pittsburgh Steelers were hyper focused on their double teams against the Bengals defense attack. Those mainly dexter Lawrence, or what this happened also to Jonathan Allen and DJ Slayton, but they were so focused on them to the point where they weren't even peeling off and trying to get to the linebackers. Now the thing that really caught my eye, dirt while watching this was that the left guard

for the Steelers Mason McCormick was actually lifting the leg of Dexter Lawrence as he's already engaged with the center. So he's getting in there. It's a double team looks very normal at first. And then McCormick slides down, was getting a full grasp of that leg as Lawrence is already engaged with the center. And to me, that's like a chop block, but he's not chopping at the lower half, but by rule, it's a high low type block. But and then he lifts it, holds it and rides the guy backwards completely. And you're on one leg, 350 pound Dexter Lawrence hopping on one leg and on the other place with Jonathan Allen and DJ Slayton they end up on the ground and getting sandwiched between the ground and this double team. And to me, when I saw this said, well, that's at least dangerous. Number one, number two, it seems like at the very least some type of holding, you're restricting the player from moving and performing the football act that is holding in my mind. Well, I'm over the game. As you can tell, check, I'm very, very not mad about it. But at the same time, I'm watching it going, huh, doesn't seem right. And that about something new that I've

never seen. You're right. The offensive lineman has to have his hands inside the shoulders of the defensive tackles. And here he's got his left arm down pulling up, holding up Dexter Lawrence's right leg. And man, he was a dancing bear. How he, how he was able to do it, on one foot on his left foot and leg is just crazy. And he pleaded his case to the refs to know a veil. It's at least holding. Yes, that stealers Brown's game and they didn't do it again. So I want to be shocked if the league got wind of it. And you know what? We probably as a stealers, we probably shouldn't do this. Absolutely. And how about the Browns with a negative 14 point differential? They're on top of the division. That's how crazy the national football league is. And they had a five and a half win over under this year. And they're pretty much there.

You're right. They've been looking at their schedule. They're going to get to over five and a half. I expect they're probably looking at seven, eight, maybe even nine wins this year. And it's largely as a draft guy, I could see this coming. They have really killed their drafts about three years in a row now and a good way, a positive way of crushing it. It really, I've been saying if they could get competent quarterback play, this team would be pretty good. And so far from Watson, they're getting that. Does he look great? No, does he look like old Dishonel Watson? Not really. I will see how long this last because he really hasn't had sense. He's coming back and got traded and everything to the everything's happening off the field. And he's been with Cleveland. He hasn't been able to put it together for longer than a month at a time. And sometimes not even that long. So let's see how it goes. But yeah, it means that this division is probably going to have 14 fighting still in December, which is good football at the same time. And also keeps up the reputation of the ASE North. Joe Goodberry's with us. And you can follow him on X at Joe Goodberry. And the Jaguars were four and three at their week eight by

last season. And all they did was finish 13 and four by winning nine of their final 10 games, closing with an eight game winning streak. They lost a Buffalo 27 to 24 in the wildcard playoffs. And they're off to a two and one start this season. So since they're by last year, 11 and three and then seven of those wins quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been pulled early because of the Jags large leads. And Joe, the one thing I wished for the Bengals this year would be a little bit more comfortable margin for error. And will we ever see a citizen of how he bangles victory comfortably? They just don't they just don't happen. Yeah, think about that. Seven of the last 11 wins. As far as eight minutes left to go in the fourth quarter, they're pulling Trevor Lawrence out. That's how big they're winning. I can't remember less than the Bengals want. It took Joe Barrow out for the final five minutes or so game. It's been a long time. They typically don't find a way to keep that pedal down and just

crush teams, you know, in that fourth quarter. So yeah, that would be nice. I would love to see that. It really shows what the Jags are about right now and how good they are. They're very good. It's a very good team. It's also interesting though. When you think of it that way, they've only had five one score games dating back to last year. Of course, the playoff game was one against the bills and they lost that one. But they're five one score games from dating back to last year. Those are four losses of those five. So let's get them in a close game. Maybe that's the formula. Maybe that's the pressure on Trevor Lawrence to get in and look like the guy who's done a little bit inconsistent in his past because he's playing really well. And since the second half of last year and into this year, he looks like a different man. But again, he's been playing with a game script and a flow of the game that is heavily favored in the Jags direction. And I think he's taking advantage of it right now. Joe Goodberry's with us and Joe did the Houston Texans give the league the blue print on how to beat the Bengals. They didn't beat them, but don't run up the middle because you can't

okay, but you run outside and you throw the ball. Yeah, while we were having so much fun with the national attention and watching the clips of Dexter Lawrence in the middle of dominating his mic'd up in that Texans game. Well, as we're having fun with it, the rest of the league was saying, okay, I guess we can't do that. I guess Dexter Lawrence is very, very good and everyone knows about it now. Yeah, he's a great point check. I think also because the Bengals corners haven't been very physical, I think Dexter is a pretty good tackler, but Jaylon Davis hasn't been that Mike Hilton type impact in the slot where he would attack like a psycho. You know, I mean, that's a completely different person that Mike Hilton was not saying we expected Davis to be that, but it's been a bit soft in there. And then DJ Turner as well, it's not the biggest guy. He's not the most physical tackler. So I think attacking to the outside makes a ton of sense for these teams, but also we've had some issues controlling the edge and setting the edge from these defensive ends. Well, in my face, a bit of a chaos creator and healed knife inside and dive inside and get

a little risky with it. He's created a lot of plays doing this, but he's also left him exposed. Miles Murphy had a couple issues with this last week and then Cassius Howell was a rookie. So I I think they would like something a little bit more from that position. It's been a big talk this week about going outside against Bengals. So now that the Bengals know how teams are going to attack them, now how do you stand up to it? Well, and I going into this game tomorrow, I'm saying to myself, if Brian Cook plays a majority of the game and he's healthy, the Bengals win, but not having him on the field really cripples this the secondary. Yeah, especially without Kyle Dugger as well. I thought he came in and played admirable. You could even know he was dealing with a quad injury. There was even the one play that Darnel Washington scamper for what 36 yards or so where everyone was struggling to get off their blocks and make a tackle. If you watch the film, Dugger's on the other side is the other side safety. Let me try and get over there. He is hobbling on one leg or barely pushing off the one leg. I think

it was his right leg and you're like, yeah, he just can't go and then Cook comes back in the game. So they have no depth there at this point. They elevated Russ Yeast off their practice quad. He has been a player that has played in this league. He started for the Rams for about a year, but you know, he's never had great success. So they are down very, very shallow at the safety position and Cook is going to deal with something hopefully he plays. Even if he does, he's probably going to be limited in some capacity. Yeah, they're in a tough spot back there that's going to be, it's going to be an area where I expect the Jaguar to try to attack it a little bit. The one guy I hated to see get waved was Charlie Jones. I mean, it dependable kick returner, especially punt returner. It cost them last week. They might win that game if they made the right move there. The bank most of them have made, let's say, you know, let's not count them up right now. But let's say they made 10 decisions or moves from free agency to trades and then going into who to cut that maybe don't move that has not worked out for them so far this off season where they said,

you know what? I don't feel we need Charlie Jones. Do we need a guy who only has a return man? We can get a little bit more out of Dante Myers on the offense and we can keep Keishan Williams. In case we have an injury, we can elevate him and I was like, at the time, you know what? That might be an our decision. Go ahead and do that. If Myers can return great, well then they had injuries that receiver and I do us a wash goes down and then Kobe Young goes down on the first play. And for whatever reason, the Bengals don't feel like you can have your wide receiver number 3. Also be your primary return man. So it's a Dante Myers off returning. And so here you go, Keishan Williams, you be a return man to close up the game. And yeah, they let that ball hit him right in the face and a couple special teams plays there backfire big time on them and yeah, that's that's the margins in the AFC North when you're playing against a Steelers team in Pittsburgh. You can't have those mistakes. You can't spot the other team 10 points and that decision right there. Big one because it had an immediate effect and it sounds like based on reporting from New York from the Giants media at the Bengals. We're trying to get Charlie Jones back and the Giants wanted to

keep him so they elevated him to their active roster and signed him to the 53. You know what? I would trade a seventh round. So I have picked four if they'd want it. I really would to getting back. But anyway, Dante Myers now is your number one punt returner and kick returner and just hold just catch the ball and hold on to it. And yeah, special teams just so critical and we're finding that out. And they felt really good about the receiver position as well. And that's, you know, and it's things to think that we're three weeks in. We'll go in the week four. And then we've already got two guys injured. I had to be released and they're signing back one of the players. They tried to sign both players back that they cut Charlie Jones and they obviously got like Mitch Tinsley this week. Yes. And how important is a guy like Eric All to disoffence Joe? He's very important for them because they don't have somebody like him on the roster. And we've talked about this for years where the Bengals want to run the ball a certain way. But really didn't

feel like they could run the power stuff or get under center and run with two tight ends. Well, how they're using Eric all this year is basically as an H back full back type. He's a lead blocker on a lot of plays. They're moving them around. He's always in motion. They aren't using him so much as a receiver. And maybe they're going to get to it at some point. Maybe they're still slowly bringing him back. They really don't want to lose this portion of their offense. I think if something happened to him again, knocking on wood right now, check for everyone that's listening. If they lost that, it probably be like a 15% of the playbook right now. And I don't think they want to lose Eric also. Maybe they don't want to stretch him out too much. But you got to feel with how much he's blocking and how much force and intensity puts into these blocks that eventually he's being able to slip by one of these guys. Fake it and then run past them for a catch here down the field. And you got to feel like it's got to be coming because you can't keep running the ball almost at an 80% clip when a guy like that's in the game. You kind of got to take advantage of those splits when they happen. You get sometimes it's hard to avoid these splits. They like Mike

Aseki always as a receiver when he's on the field. Well, once in a while you run it to pop a big play. I think the inverse here is what we're expecting at some point with Eric all that running it a lot when he's on the field. I think the big play is going to come eventually. And Joe Goodberry with us for a couple more minutes and Joe so much talk about Joe burrow. I wouldn't trade him for the world. That's for sure. But and that's the big but the margin the margin for error. You want it to be softer so that he's not pressed into committing a mistake at a critical time in the fourth quarter. So a lot of talk about that and hey, another opportunity tomorrow to to beat the Jags tie for first place in the AFC North. Yeah, that's right. I will it would be nice we started to talk about how nice it would be to actually pull burrow out of a game because you have

comfortable win. That may not happen this week. It's a very tough team. But yeah, there is some thought there. When burrow was frustrated and was going through a little bit when you know when he was talking about I got a fun and this and that. 2024 as well. He made some of these comments about you know, it feels like I have to play perfect in order to succeed and that was a much worse defense than and the defense seven a rough day. So special teams against Steelers. But you don't want to see that really transpire in the game where he was pretty flawless against the Steelers. Yes. Until that final play you could say this thing about Dalton Ryzen. We'll go back on the tape. Dalton Ryzen or pitching just shut out all game and then that final play he gets beat. And I didn't see no comments on the internet. Well, Dalton, I have a week. I should be worried about right guard. I'm like, guys, it's one play. Does it stink? That happened on the final play and I ended up deciding the game. No doubt about it. Does it hurt more because of it? Does it go more into your evaluation because the critical moment? Yes. Of course. But at the same time when you step back

him to week later, you go, you know what? This is true for Dalton Ryzen. It is Joe burrow. Joe burrow is a very good quarterback. And that is the guy I want to lead this team. And I, when you're down by three and you've got a timeout and you've got an experienced and it can hit 58 yard givls and he looks like he's all the way back, right? He's a weapon again. He's 21st, last 20. And you're at the 38 yard line with less than a minute to go. We're in a timeout in your pocket. I would bet. I would take that every single game and I would bet that the Bengals were going to win that game or at least tie it. 95 times out of 100. It just happens the way it happens. And sometimes that's football. I would still hit my wagon to Joe burrow. And Joe, this is why they brought in Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Allen and Brian Cook for moments like this. They've got a nifty in the bud and get back on the winning track like now tomorrow. I feel like they have

responded pretty well from games like this in the Joe burrow era where they would think of like the jets Mike Waking. And there was a handful of us, right? Where you just, you come away from that loss. There's no easy way to lose, right? Sometimes we lose to the chiefs and we can't, we can't, we could have had them, but you don't feel bad about it. But you do have these losses where you you feel bad about them where you're like, that should never happen. Those mistakes should never happen. And I feel like the team typically responds. And I don't know if it's we can, we can place it on the Joe burrow era, Zach Taylor, or whatever it is. But when they've had good teams, this doesn't linger long. You have your loss, you lick your wounds, you get back to it. And they're usually much better going forward. And this team tends to get better in the Zach Taylor era as the season goes. I think they will be. I'm eager to watch how they respond to this. Do they, you know, Joe burrows that competitive cycle, right? There's a lot of stories and talks about, you know, that's the guy you want that you want him to infect the locker room with that attitude. Well, let's see it. This is the opportunity. And I feel like in the past, they've done a good job in these spots.

You can follow him at Joe Goodbury and Locked On Bangle's podcast. Joe, thank you so much for your time tonight. Really, really appreciate it. Thank you, Chair. Have a good night. Okay, take care. And when we come back, after the bottom of the hour news, what do you think of sports wise when you say the words Springfield, Ohio, when we return, this is Chick Ludwig Sports Talk 700 WLW. Shulis Joa Delis tonight's producer. We're going all the way to 10 o'clock, leading you into UC Arizona football. Big 12 action tonight. 11 o'clock kick off in Tucson. Go Bearcats. Well, what do you think of when I say the words, Springfield, Ohio sports? I think of baseball. I think of high school basketball. And man, I'm starting to think

high school fast pitch softball. To join us to talk about a story that's just too good to ignore. Dayton Daily News sports editor. Long time Springfield news. Sun sports writer. I wish I had him as a boss. Michael Cooper joins us. His maiden voyage on the big one. 700 WLW. Michael. Thanks so much for joining us tonight. How are you? Great. Chick, thanks so much for having me. I really appreciate it. Oh, you are so welcome. And when I think of Springfield and baseball, how about the names Dave Berba, Adam Eaton, Dustin Hermenson and Rick White all from Kenton Ridge High School. And then you brought up Ben Ross from Springfield, Shawnee, shortstop third baseman centerfielder for the Minnesota twins. What is it in the water in Clark County in Springfield, Ohio with baseball? I think we just love baseball and general and softball. I mean, I think the parents take it very

seriously. They want their kids to be really good. I think, you know, the parents, obviously a lot of the parents played ball. And I think that country goes down to their kids and they really take it really seriously. I think that's part of why you're seeing Kent and Ridge softball have, you know, so much success here over the past three, four years. And Springfield Kenton Ridge High School. Two-time defending division for state softball champions led by Ivy Rastatter, left-handed pitcher. You're going to hear from Ivy after the top of the eight o'clock hour news. And just what a phenomenal, phenomenal story. 61 and 0 as a starting pitcher for the Kent Ridge Cougars. And her team has gone 32 and 0 back to back years, 64 and 0. And they're within what five games of the state record held by Lyma Bath. Just an unbelievable story, Michael.

Yeah, I mean, they're just the team itself, not just Ivy, but the team itself is just loaded with talent. They've got several kids that play high, high level tribal softball. I think they have a Jayden Davis has been their first baseman. She'll probably play catcher this year. She's in a higher state commit. They have a second baseman, Lily Folk. Her grandpa Ed Folk was the long-time head coach at Kent Ridge, both her softball and baseball, sorry, softball. He is a a legend, legendary coach. She's one of Troy University, Alabama. They also have the glass sisters, Chloe Glass and Kenna Glass. Their grandpa Tim Glass was a Springfield South graduate. He played in the Cleveland Indians organization. Their dad played baseball at Kent State, and they're both high, high level recruits as well. And outside of that, they have a great coach, Sarah Shaw-Nots, Sarah Ivory. She played for Coach Folk in the 90s. And they've gotten close several times of winning the state championship over the past 10, 15 years. And finally, we're able to see that through the last two years. They just got three or four classes here put together that are just just phenomenal, phenomenal softball players and great kids as well. No doubt. And

I also think of basketball with Springfield and man when they had North and South, South with my main man, the late great Wayne Wiseman and Springfield North with Don Henderson. Now that's going back several years, but the great, great teams, great players, and great great coaches. Yeah, absolutely. And then the coaches that came after that, I was talking earlier Larry Hammett, South and 84th at North had some great, great teams in the 90s, 84th North made multiple trips to the state tournament, so basketball tournament. And actually, believe it or not, Ivy Rassider's dad, Pat was a player on one of those teams. So, you know, basketball is also a huge deal in Springfield. And honestly, football is starting to get to be a big deal as well when you consider that the Springfield Wildcats made three straight state championship games, I think from 21 to 23 and have another great year this year as well. No doubt about it. And Maurice Douglas is the football coach at Springfield High School.

He went to Trotwood Madison High School. I covered his high school career. That's how far back I go, Michael. And then he played at the University of Kentucky and then of course, he was a defensive back for the Chicago Bears. So he's building quite a, yeah, a fine, fine program. I visited him a few weeks ago when I was Reffen Bali ball out there. And when I walked onto the field, he just, he, he, he about passed out when he saw me because we had a nice little reunion, man. It's, yeah, we go back many years. So Springfield, man, loaded with, uh, loaded with talent, but how about Ivy and her team, the Kent Ridge Cougars 64 and O in two years and they're only halfway through her career. She's a junior this year. I mean, the sky is the limit. They can just shatter records that are incomprehensible. Yeah, they need five wins to get the state record. And I was talking a lot of people last year like this is the greatest team in, in state history.

I truly believe that of those last two years. I mean, um, they have been just just so difficult to beat. I mean, obviously they, they've gone undefeated, but I mean, a lot of their games are not even really close. I mean, they're, they're, they're unrolling the majority of the teams they play. Um, and I think the other thing is that some of these girls that are on that team are playing such high level travel that they've seen every, every spot. I mean, they're playing against the best kids in the nation, you know, every weekend in the summer. And so when you get into a close game like the last year and state championship game, they were down six to one and came back and, and won that, that game seven to six. And so, um, you know, they, they've been in every situation. You can think of it in the summer. So when they get to these high school games, um, you know, it's just kind of part for the course for them. Yeah, I was wonder, I was a little bit worried about them following that state championship game. When they were down, I believe six to nothing at one point early. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, six to nothing. And because they've blown so many teams out, would they be able to handle coming back? And they certainly did with a seven to six victory over what licking valley. Yes, that's correct. And I think the thing about IV two that most people

don't realize is that not only is she a dominant pitcher, but she is a incredible hitter. And I think she hit something like 20 or more home runs last year. And she is just a phenomenal to put as well. She had a big home run early in that game to kind of get them back in it. And I think once they got kind of going offensively, they were, there was no doubt they were going to win that game. And she's a university of Georgia commit. And that happened, I believe like last weekend. And I know she's glad to have that burden off her shoulders knowing where her college days are going to be. And then she's, she's not just the one dimensional pitcher like you mentioned. She's a tremendous hitter hitting nearly 500. And she's also an outstanding setter wearing uniform number zero outstanding setter on the 14 and three Ken Ridge varsity volleyball team. So it's amazing. I think the other thing to realize about IV is that she's just a great kid as well. I mean, a lot of the girls at Ken Ridge and in Springfield, my daughter included really a look

up to IV. And she's always, you know, she always takes the time to talk to the younger kids, especially those that play softball. And I mean, she's just a, you know, a great kid. She absolutely is and great parents. And her dad's a basketball coach. And is he coaching your kid? Yeah, he's coaching my youngest son, Benny. They played on the Springfield future, a U team from, I think, I think Benny joined in six and second grade and we'll be playing our probably our last year with him here at six grades starting here in a few weeks. Okay. And I, these brothers will Leo and Abel. So she's the only, she's the only girl on the family outside of mom. And mom, Christie spells her name, CHRIS DEEE. And so IV is IVEEE. So I found that to be rather awesome. How cool is that? And how are things going for you as sports editor of

the Dayton Daily News where I had 30 years from 1979 through 2009? Well, take thanks for asking that. I mean, it's a dream come true to be honest with you. You know, I'm, I'm, I'm, was spending a long time in Springfield and kind of took some time off and was a free lantern there for a little while. I worked for Clark County Ohio and then the job came open. I decided to apply for it and, you know, kind of here I am. But man, I mean, it's just a dream come true. Getting it at Tom Archty, Ken and Hal McCoy. And, and obviously, David Gibbonsky is one of my, one of my close friends. Well, my men, honestly, my mentor. And so it's great to be able to work with him again. And, you know, it's just a, it's a dream come true. We're doing, we're doing fantastic. I have a great staff, including Stephen Wright and Travis Erickson. And we just, we just done a phenomenal job and it's been, it's been awesome. Well, that's fantastic. And there's always, yeah, you have an open invitation if you want to come back and write for me anytime, oh man, really appreciate that. Man, my plate is full. Um, Ralph, teach and talk. Yeah, it's, it's wild. And I'm glad a caller earlier said, you know,

talked about Dan Horde tonight because he's going to call the UC game. And it's an 11 o'clock kickoff. So he's going to get on a plane, you know, at some ungodly hour, come back and then call the Bengals and Jaguars game. So I cannot complain about an extra hour tonight. My hours on Saturday's, my window is six to nine. So when my boss asked me to do an extra hour till 10 bleeding into UC football, I said, okay. And four hours, but then looking at Dan Horde, I, I can't line or cry. That's, that's exactly right. That's beautiful, man. Well, great stuff. Michael, appreciate you. And we'll be talking to Ivy rest at the top of the, uh, at the top of the hour. Can't wait and just, uh, just making records and making memories as, uh, as this

team goes, the Kenton Ridge softball coover's, they are one special group. Yeah, they are. They're, they're fun to watch too. I mean, they just have so much fun playing softball. I think that's the other thing too. You wouldn't know that they feel any pressure, which is kind of what makes them great, right? Like when you're in the dugout with them, which I have been multiple times over the past two years, you know, they're, they're so, uh, they love playing. You can tell that there's really, they don't feel a lot of pressure, even though they should, right? And when you've won 64 straight games, you think to be some pressure to keep that street going, but I think they just are confident in their abilities and, you know, just love playing together. I think that's part of their success that they just love each other and love playing the game. That's exactly right. The, uh, the com rotary on that team is, is very, very special. No doubt. And we'll see if they can keep it going this season, man. And do they jump up to division three or a couple of other teams like a greenville dropping into four. So that's going to be a highly competitive division. Absolutely. Greenville's got his coach from Springfield as well. Jared Newland, he is a,

his dad Greg Newland was the coach at South for a long time. They went to say a couple of times. And then Jared is a Springfield Shawnee grad. And they've had some battles with Katernrow Joe over the years. All fantastic. Great stuff. Michael Cooper, sports editor of the Dayton Daily News, longtime sports writer to Springfield news son. And quite a photographer too. Really appreciate you, Michael. Thank you. Thanks, Jake. Appreciate it. All right. And hey, we'll be back with more. We're going to open up the phone lines here for the last few minutes. You want to talk reds, bangles. You mention it, man. Love to have you at five, one, three, seven, four, nine, seven, thousand, one, eight hundred. The big one. Chick Ludwig sports talk, seven hundred WLW. We're going all the way

to 10 o'clock tonight. And I'm all excited about our next guest. She's a junior left-handed starting pitcher for the two-time defending Division 4 State Softball Champion Springfield Kent and Ridge High School Cougars. She's 61 and 0 as a starter and her team is 64 and 0 with a pair of 32 and 0 seasons. And with those 64 straight wins, Kent and Ridge owns the nation's longest active winning streak. And the Cougars are just five wins away from tying the state record of 69 set by Lima Bath from 1981 to 1983. It's an honor, pleasure and privilege for me to welcome in two-time national fast pitch coaches association all American Ivy Rastatter who recently committed to the University of Georgia. Ivy, welcome to 700 WLW. How are you? I'm good. Thanks for having me. I'm excited. So am I. And when you step back Ivy and look at the

numbers, your record and the Cougars win streak and state titles, how do you process it all and how surreal is it? Well coach John definitely does a good job at making us focus and for the next game. So taking a step back from being out of season, it really does amaze me that we've held on to it for so long. And I'm just really proud of our team for staying focused for two full seasons. So I hope they continue that next year. Ivy generated 285 strikeouts and 174 innings last year for a 1.53 ERA. But the 2026 state title Ivy was an easy to come by. The Cougs had to overcome a six to nothing deficit to beat Newark, licking Valley, seven to six in the state title game at Firestone Stadium in Akron. What was that feeling like and what does it tell you about your team? Yeah, I mean definitely a different feeling than we've had all year like wow we're down six to

nothing like six runs. It's a lot of runs. So what it really tells me about our team is our ability to just refocus and then the next inning and how we really push each other and challenge each other and through the mental trainings that we've done coach Dan. We really improved a lot mentally this year, not just with our skills, but learning how to come back from those deficits. I mean we did it a few times even during our Willersburg game. We came back in the bottom of the seventh. So we've been challenged before. So I'm glad that we had so we had experience before that game. Well, I can only imagine what your parents Christy and Patrick and your three brothers will Leo enable what they were going through when your team was down. Christy tells me she watches the game from the center field, not the backstop and I bet she was a nervous wreck. Yes, yeah. Yeah, if she was definitely pacing around, but it's good. That's where I get my emotions from.

So I've learned how to cope with them and deal with that. So it's great. Now I understand you started playing softball at the age of four and a half and then you started pitching at seven. And when could you tell that hey, I think I might be pretty good at this. I honestly, I've always loved pitching by love hitting two. So I guess it's all just been one big game for me, but I guess I just started realizing that I was actually pretty good. My freshman year when we just we had the winning streak and I was like, wow, we were actually like it just surprised me. Like I didn't expect that going into my freshman year. So that's when I started realizing, I guess. Hey, to all our loyal listeners out there, Ivy isn't just a one-dimensional player or one dimensional athlete at the plate. She had 485 with 15 home runs and 19 doubles last season. And she said 32 career home runs. And on top of it all, she's the starting center on the

Cougars 14 and three varsity volleyball team. And Ivy with that juggling act, you have to be efficient with time management. Yeah, yeah. I mean, my coach, my volleyball coach is a great job scheduling games outside of weekends. So I can focus on top all while still being there for the volleyball team. But it's definitely hard trying to get in lessons or workouts in between volleyball season. But I think I do pretty good with my time management with school and volleyball and top all, but definitely challenging for sure. Can you tell us what your mindset is when you step in the circle to pitch and the batter spots to hit? What is your what is your mindset? Yeah, I mean, me and coach Baldwin were talking about this other day, but I guess it's just a big game of figure it out. So just do whatever you have to do in the situation and just figure it out for your team and do what's best for the team in the situation and not just be so self-centered

about it and just realize what you need to do. Like even if it's not sure I could grow out, like get a pitch off the plate for a swinging miss or a ground ball or something or just put the ball in play to score the next run. I guess that's just how I view the game. And change the eye level of the hitter. I'm sure. Yeah, for sure. And here's what's incredible. The Cougars are only halfway through your high school career. You got two more years left this spring and next. And what are your coaches do to keep you guys grounded as you chase and shatter these records? Yeah, I guess a big saying that we have on our team is be where your feet are. So we just like to be in that bat or the pitch, the current pitch. So don't think about the games ahead that we have, but think of where you are now and what you need to do to do your job now. Well, from one to nine, you're just a phenomenal team. And

congratulations to your teammates here. Jaden Davis committed to a Ohio State where I went to school with 50,000 of my closest friends and two year lily folk is headed to Troy University in Troy, Alabama. And Brenna is at five that's currently a freshman catch at Ohio University. So that is fantastic that you guys are generating a lot of college players. For sure. Yeah, Sean, that is a great job with pushing us to play in college, like influencing us. That's a great idea. And a lot of us just love the game so much. She makes us love it so much that we want to play at the next level and just continue to get better. So it's awesome to see my teammates wanting to pursue their college careers and Brenna doing it now. So I'm just really proud of all of them. And Ivy, you are you've recently committed to the University of Georgia in Athens. How does it feel to one day be a Georgia Bulldog?

I mean, I am so excited. Like, I don't even know how to put in the words. Like, playing in the best conference in the country against the best competition in the country every day. It's just so exciting to me just to be at that high of a level with such good team and such good coaches. So I'm really excited. I'm hoping to one day win a national championship. So well, Ivy, I want to thank your mom, Christy, who spells her name, CHRISDE, and you are ivwe. So yeah, in Patrick, your dad and your brothers and that's a great family support system for you. And just appreciate your taking time to join us tonight here on the big one 700 WLW. Yeah, thank you for having me. You're welcome. That's ivwe rastatter of the Kenton Ridge Cougars. Thank you so much ivy appreciation. This is Chick Ludwig with sports talk

We're going all the way to 10 o'clock tonight. And I'm trying to get a college football score here for you. I'll get to those here in a couple minutes. But I want to give out some shout outs here. I'm smarting a little bit after elders lost last night, 35-28 to the molar crusaders at Welcom Stadium in Dayton. Congratulations to the crusaders who win the GCL South. And I love elders' offense, but their defense needs a lot of work because that running game of the molar crusaders was awesome last night. As I always like to say, we fight like hell in high school. And then we become BFFs in the GCL. Man. Hey, Jeff Carr does the Lockdown Reds podcast.

And it's Jeff Carr's birthday. So happy birthday to Jeff. And him and his wife recently gosh celebrated a new addition, a daughter. And her name is Josephine Vivian Carr. And like Jeff told me he can call her Joey V during baseball season. Congratulations to the cars, Jeff and his wife. That is awesome. Met a new friend today while refereeing volleyball at sports express in Mason. Joseph Smith is the director of campus safety and security with a little Miami school district. And he was one of my line judges today. And we talked about his boss or one of his bosses.

The principal little Miami Kevin Harlam and good friend of the Ludwigs. So a shout out to Joe Smith, the director of campus and safety and security with a little Miami school district does a phenomenal job. And happy birthday to the great John Warden 80 years old or 80 years young. Big John lefty with the world championship ring of the 1968 Detroit Tigers. Congratulations on reaching 80. Big John man keep going strong. And you just heard from IV rat statter. And want to thank her parents Patrick and Christie for facilitating our interview. And they have three sons will a senior in high school with Kent and Ridge. Then comes IV. She's next the only daughter in the family. She's a junior. There's Leo,

a freshman in an able a sixth grader. So a shout out to the rest of her family. Fantastic. Let's go out to the phones. Mark is in springboro. Hi Mark. Hey, chick. There's always a great day with softball. It always is. Yes, sir. Hey, I want to talk that can't bridge team. I've never on party. There were games, but you can rest or share anything you have a spring ball. You'll be out there in five minutes. Just about you're just about right now. But what if it's 20 or 30 runs? That's it still might take a couple hours. That is that is off the crew. By she and that star picture hit the couple on right and let's say I have it from basement at each time. Yes, you're right. You know what, Mark.

And great friend on the phone with me, Mark and springboro. Fantastic on fire. Great friend. And IV is five foot seven. She's powerfully built. And she plays taller than she is. She's got an incredible rise ball. And she keeps the batters totally off balance, changing the eye level of the batter. And then when she steps into bat, oh my goodness, she's got power. And it was her home run with a sixth and nothing deficit that got the Ken Ridge coogers going, I guess the licking valley in the state championship game. So, but you're right. She is and I got to do third base in the three man system her freshman year at a game at Mason High School. So that's when I first saw the greatness really of Ken Ridge. Hey, staying on the softball link. I was talking to Gary, the Hillsborough coach,

when I did a some ball or last week in an armcoe. Yeah. And there's 20, there's 20, 16, they're not participating or they're down this fall, fall, fall, fall. So the thunder tournament, as you probably know, next week, it's been canceled. Not enough teams. Okay. Yeah, that's that's a show. You know, I love the sport. I like to say that it's baseball on five cups of coffee. When you get two good pitchers and man, it's just a fast, fast game. And we love it. We absolutely do. That's a shame because fall ball is very popular. You know, the teams take August off, you know, after July, August is often they come back in September, October and play some play some softball. So while the weather is good here, man, I hope they get some games in. No doubt. And

yeah, one more thing, switching to volleyball, a shout out to my granddaughter, place for Sennaville varsity in junior. And her travel team, she's going to play for elevation. Oh, yeah. They're in Mason. Fantastic. Yeah, I was at their facility today. I've been going there on Saturday mornings. Yeah, it's a phenomenal place. Elevation and yeah, sports expressing Mason. Yeah, her name is Charlotte Rodney. Okay. All right. You have a great night. You have a great night. Hey, before you leave, as Mark, before you leave, I know you're a big Chicago Cubs fan in the silver. The silver lining with the reds is that the Cubs only played two more games than the Cincinnati Reds this year. In that, you're rubbing it in. I'm sorry. You're rubbing it in. They had a great team. I'm the right. Peacrow Armstrong is is unbelievable. He's like six foot of heart and 80. He could walk past when you think he's a guy on the street and he's just an

unbelievable player. Is that something where that power is coming from? Oh, I know his back speed is incredible. And the jump that he gets in center field and his defense is just spectacular. I got to rule for the Cleveland Indians go Indians or the other guardians. Yes. Well, I'm sorry, the guardians. My bag. All right. Well, I'm pulling for the guardians too. And I'm pulling for San Diego because they're their manager pitched at the University of Dayton and he's from the Versailles area here and makes his home in the Versailles area in the off season. So I'm pulling for the San Diego Padres. Well, maybe you and I will be on the south of the field sometime this fall. I would love that, Mark. Thank you so much for calling. All right. Appreciate it. All right. We've got Sam and Florence. Hey, Sam. How you doing, Jack? I first time I talked to you. I love to talk to

the softball. Hey, great to hear from you. Sam. Yeah. Hey, I, I don't coach the, a lot of the girls that played on the Harris in 2016. Okay. They went to state. Yeah. And when we transition down from slow tips to fast tips. Yeah, when when was that? When was ball? Hey, I think, you know, 45 feet away. It's amazing what those girls could do with that ball. You're absolutely right. Make it rise, make it drop. Yeah. Yeah. And it's just, it's just flat out. It's a, it's a totally different game than the game that I played. It's not whole. You're right. And it's an amazing, it's an amazing game watching the college world series. Yeah, watching the college world series. The women's college world series. I really love it. It's, I wish they'd moved the fences back because

gosh, a flood, these fly balls flying out of Devon Park. Yeah, but it's spectacular. It really is. It is an awesome game. I mean, I don't think the girls do not get the recognition that they deserve. You know, a ground ball in the infield, if there's just one little hiccup, one little bird. Yeah, the girls going to be safe at first. It's, uh, correct. It's on a tighter field. It's on a tighter field. And there's a lot going on between the lines. It's, it's not turning to. Yeah, try turning to. It's tough. It really is. I played second base my whole life for not all the way through it from all the way up through U 18. I did some travel ball. I played the infield. Yeah, it was a totally different game. And I don't think I mean, those girls play hard. And they don't get the recognition that they deserve. And how about the pop up in the infield? The ball has so much spin

on it. You've got to tuck it away or it's going to pop right out of that glove. And it could roll foul. You know, it's, it's a fair ball. We thought we thought our girls to catch a 12 inch, a 12 inch super ball, like a play ball. Yeah. Yeah. We would literally kick it up in the air and let them track it down. That's how we taught infield infield pop ups. Yeah. There's a lot going on. And it was a live ball. Oh, yeah. That's exactly right. It's fun. I wish I could have had you with some of our games. I mean, it would have been, that would have been an awesome thing. Well, beautiful. And 2006, but well, I like going out to Harrison. Yeah, I have a good day. I like going out to Harrison. It's got a great facility out there. And love it. Hey, appreciate the call.

Thank you. All right. Thank you. Awesome. Hey, when we return, a little off the beaten path. And it deals with money and kids. Did you have a job or did you scrounge for pop bottles when you were a little tight? Yeah. Kirk Herbstreet did. And so did I. Hey, that's all coming up. This is sports talk. Epglyce.com or call 1-800-LilyRX or 1-800-545-59-79. A37 in the Queen City of Cincinnati, Chick Ludwig. 700-WLW. This is Sports Talk. We're going all the way to 10 o'clock tonight, leading you into UC Arizona, Big 12 football, all the coverage right here on 700-WLW at 10 o'clock and kick off in Tucson at 11 p.m. a late night and early morning following the bear cats tonight. How about the University of Kentucky Wild Cats pulling out a 35 to 34 victory over the South Carolina game cocks on the road in Columbia, South Carolina.

Quarterback Kenny Minchie. Well, I should say this first. Kentucky was down 14 to nothing after the first quarter down 20 to 10 at half time. They come back with 14 points in the third quarter, three in the fourth, South Carolina and Kentucky tied at 27 at the end of regulation. And then South Carolina gets the ball first, scores a touchdown, kicks the extra point. Now it's up to Kentucky and quarterback Kenny Minchie throws three touchdown passes and he hooks up with Henry Boyer for a, I believe a six yard touchdown in overtime to pull within one and then

they gamble and go for two and they convert the two point conversion. Kenny Minchie to Willie Rajrigas in the Wild Cats pull out a 35 to 34 victory in overtime at South Carolina in the 24th ranked Kentucky Wild Cats are now four and one and two and one in the South Eastern Conference. How about that? We'd love to hear from a Kentucky fan at 5137497,800 the big one. Well, I want to tell my Kirk Herbstreet story. I don't think I've done that on 700 WLW yet. But Kirk was a quarterback of the centerville Elks in high school, South of Dayton, tremendous quarterback. He could play, man, he ran the option. He could throw it. He could run it

and ran the option with flawlessly for head coach Bob Greg. Well, come his senior year at centerville. We decided that the Dayton Daily News to make Kirk put him on the cover of our high school football preview section and we wanted a picture of Kirk blonde with Boomeruss, Iason of the Cincinnati Bengals. So we worked it out. Well, I go and pick up Kirk at centerville high school drive him to Wilmington College to meet Boomeruss, Iason, and our photographer Bill Shepard on one of the practice fields as he's setting up his camera and everything. I'm running past patterns and Boomer and Kirk are throwing the football to me and I'm doing a story on Kirk. And Boomeruss Kirk, where are you going to

college? Kirk says, I don't know yet. He says, man, you've got to come to Maryland. Where Boomer went. And there was no promise there. That's for sure. Anyway, Kirk told me, check as soon as I make up my mind, you are my first phone call. So it was on a Friday afternoon back in the stone ages when we had telephones on our desks. Not dial telephones, we had the push button telephones. And it's late on a Friday afternoon. I'm really white getting things together. I've written some couple of stories for Sunday's edition that they needed early. And I'm really getting ready to walk out of the newsroom when the phone rings. And it's Kirk Herbstreet. It's his chick. I told you, you're my first phone call. I'm going to Ohio state. Well, being a 1976 grad, walking with my degree at St. John Arena,

Winter quarter of 1976, with two time highs, Matruffy winner, Archie Griffin. I was thrilled to hear the news that Kirk was going to Ohio state. Anyway, Kirk is the face of college football, ESPN and ABC. And really, and he's got a contract with Amazon too. He makes $18 million a year. And I knew when I covered Kirk in high school, he had the smarts, he had the knowledge, he had the look, and he had just the knowledge, the enthusiasm. And I just told myself back then, this cat has it, and he's going places, and he certainly has. He's in the final year of his massive ESPN and Amazon

contracts. And he's making $18 million a year. And so on a recent podcast, he talked about his humble beginnings and his relationship with money. And he said, I grew up with no money. We were just typical Ohio family, my whole life, I haven't had a lot of money. But when I started to make it, I just try to keep it, try to save it as much as I can. Well, back when he was a kid in the 70s, he and his neighborhood friends, like the story says, turned to a classic American kid hustle to get by. Just trying to learn how to put some, some coins in his, in his blue jeans. Yeah, he and his buddies scoured the neighborhood, hunting for Coca-Cola and sprite bottles, piling them into his red wagon,

kind of like a scene out of an old movie. And Kirk and company would haul that clicking wagon down the road to the local convenience or grocery store, cash in the bottles in for 10 cents a pop. And getting exactly a buck 80 for a stuffed load of 18 bottles absolutely thrilled him and his buddies and they immediately spent it on bubblegum or candy. And hey, he had a financial struggle little Ohio State that full scholarship was a total life saver. And he said, if he didn't get that, he probably would have joined the army. And even at Ohio State, he couldn't qualify for a pel Grant. So there wasn't any extra money coming in. And Kirk admitted that, you know, his dad

was able to spare a couple hundred bucks a month with some spending cash to keep a Kirk afloat during college. Yeah, there was no NIL back then or you couldn't get a job with a with a scholarship at the school. So he said, I learned quickly to hoard whatever money that I got. So it was just kind of built in me without having a lot of money. So now what I want to ask all the loyal listeners out there, I did the same thing, but it was two cents a bottle. We scrounged the neighborhood man. I remember going to elder stadium on Saturday mornings before the cleanup and scouring through the 10,000 seat horseshoe concrete stadium looking for coins and change and we found some.

But yeah, we shuffled snow at the neighbor's houses. I don't think I ever tried a lemonade stand, but man, we got soda bottles, cashed them in two cents a pop. And I also was in the St. William Boys choir. And we would sing weddings. There'd be a handful of us. They'd ask for volunteers. And we would sing a wedding. And at the end of the wedding, before we went down the steps of the sacristy at St. William Church, Dave Allen, the choir director, in his hand would be a handkerchief. And he opened up the handkerchief to a handful of quarters. courtesy of the couple getting married is a bonus for the singers of the wedding. And Dave Allen would give each of the singers 50 cents to quarters. And I would admit,

I would go right to the drug store, right next door to the church and load up on some candy and bubble gum. So I'm asking you the loyal listeners of 700 WLW. Man, what was your? What did you do to scrounge money as a kid? 5137497,100 the big one. This is our off the beaten path tonight topic. We'd love to hear from you because I've got my coffee. I've got my computer. All I need is you. Once again, at 5137497,100 the big one. Sam is in Florence. Sam, welcome back. Hey, check. My dad used to go fishing spring day away when I was younger out in spring day out around 4275. There's a, I think a hilton hotel and all kind of other stuff up there now.

Yeah. But I've learned long ago if I took a hundred pound burlap sack, it went bottle hopping around the lake and up around where they dumped everything. Yeah. I could make a small fortune two cents at a time. Yes, sir. Brother, I hummed more 100 pound gunning sack slow up out bottles. Are you kidding me? Get them up to the IGA up in Delhi. Awesome. Man. And we walked everywhere. Roller, man. And we walked everywhere, didn't we? Well, I didn't walk out to spring day. Oh, hi, oh, yeah, I mean, I walked everywhere else. That's right. Right around the neighborhood, the hood. What I'm a West citer, man. Oh, Riverside, Grub, Morning Rape, Riverside,

like baseball for house cafe, having a nice day. Beautiful. Thank you so much, Sam. I appreciate it. Hey, Mel is. All right, brother. Thank you. Thank you. As always, Mel is in Mount Carmel. Mel. Hey, check. Yes, sir. Could, could talk into your man. Right back at you. Hey, the hustle. I think they saw our thing there too. I'm like you two cents a bottle. I nickel for the beer bottles, but we we caught a really good deal. They had the beachmont drag strip back in the very late 50s, early 60s. Yeah. And we used to go down and try and catch a ride with some of the teenagers to get in, you know, in the cars. They take a car. We were in there one night watching the dragsters, Tommy Ivo and all that bunch. Oh, how cool. Yeah, it was great. I loved the pits and a fellow walks up and says, Hey, you two, went to job and he was we thought we were in trouble. We didn't have a ticket. Yeah, he says

tomorrow morning, get in here, pick all the bottles up their ears. That's your job. That's your pay. So generally every weekend during the drag racing season, we take a couple of wagons down. We built some walls on them. And of course, two cents a bottle, but we were hauling a lot of stuff, maybe making, this is very early 60s. I'm in your age group. A haul tax loss. We pull down 25, 30 bucks, you know, wow. That was a good gig. And got the at that point, we could go down and watch the dragsters and we were on good terms with the owner. You couldn't beat the job. Mel, every once in a while went when I could generate enough change. I would treat myself. I would go over to Limamons, Delicates and Caddy Corner from our house at West Nathan, Rosemont. And I would buy an RC Cola and I would get some either hostess snowballs or hostess cupcakes.

And I'd be shooting basketball and I'd take a break and I treated myself to that. And because one of seven kids, we never got, we don't, we'd always have to split a pop and two scoops of ice cream. That was our limit. I'm there. Oh, man. So yeah, but yeah, that was family. Seven kids. And wouldn't have changed it for the world. And we had the original lenders. This was in the East End on Eastern Avenue right about the end of it there. There's a bus turnaround was Glenders ice cream parlor and you know who was running that? Wow. Carl Linder. Yeah. In their infancy. So it was, you know, we'd go in there with a little bit of money, get a coke or you know, a root beer float. Yes. It was having on earth. I love it. Mel, thanks so much for the story. Appreciate it. Hey, good. Good talking to you. Check out a good one. All right. Thank you very

much. Chad from the West side, the best side. Chad, how are we doing tonight? What do you say, big fella? Oh, man. Love and life live in large. Good. Good for you. Hey, man, I'm telling you, man. You guys missed out now. Here's the deal golf balls. Yeah. Got an I caddy at Western Hills Country Club. I wouldn't be here without the game of golf because I won the Evan scholarship to Ohio State in majored in journalism. Well, good for you. Well, that's cool. Yeah, man. I've thrown for a local swim club here and after swim team practice, we'd run out of to woodland golf course when we go search for golf balls. And then I'd sit on the seven T box up there and I had the clubhouse beat because they were 75 cents of ball and I was 50 cents of ball and three for a buck. Oh, what I, a bargain state. Yes. And the key was on a 17 when all the hackers lost all their balls and they needed balls.

Right. So I figured out that there's got to be a better source of golf balls and you bring up the Western Hills Country Club. I was in a lake. I'd get in that lake and I would dig out garbage bags. Yeah. Was it seven on seven? I think that's four. I don't remember. Yeah. But I get in that. Just in yeah, that disgusting muck. And I would pull out handfuls upon handfuls of golf balls. I clean them up and then I would take them over to to woodland golf course and I sold hundreds of golf balls to kids to a point where the manager at woodland came over and talked to the manager at our swim club. Instead of this kick comes back. We're calling the police. I was stealing all their big stuff. Oh, that's all that's not happening. That is beautiful, Chad.

Well, I did all the, you know, snow shovel and all that but the golf ball thing was my first enterprise about that. But yeah, I made a bunch of money doing that as a kid. It was great. Fantastic. We went barter with him. I would trade three golf balls with some kid at the swim club for a nice cream sandwich, that kind of stuff. And it was our little little economy. Yeah, that's what I did messing around with kid. Oh, I love it, Chad. Fantastic stuff. And when I think of Western Hills Country Club, gosh, number 11 and number 12 and number 16, you know, with the with the fences up, man, some balls were flying out of there and yeah, great stuff. That's right. I'll tell you, man, anybody, any kid out there that needs to make some money, you're diving a lake at a country club and you'll find more balls than you could ever imagine. That's incredible. Thanks so much, Chad. That's a great story. And I ticked, but you have a good one. Thank you. All right, let's.

We've got. Is it Maria? Rick and Ray. Maria, I've got about one minute before I break. Okay. Okay. I can't just bottles in. I got in trouble. I took them from the house to the Philippines, but my friend Diane and I wanted to go over to the hotel where the Dave Clark five were. And we watched them pass this by. Wow. That was fun. Yeah. The Dave Clark five. I'm singing the song because in my head, if you speak, oh, that's fantastic. But today, my granddaughter sick grandma, do you? She was like seven? Do you have a hundred dollars I can have? I'm out of money. That's God's honest truth. I thought, what the heck? 100 bucks. Wow. Yeah. But I wish I could go back to them days. o'clock tonight. Kick off at 11. Joe Wadell is tonight's producer. He will eventually hand the baton, pass the baton to Drew Wester Heidi. And it's going to be a late night and early morning following UC football. Well, we're talking side hustle as a kid. How did you, uh, yeah, with the spare change, how did you, uh, stuff your pockets with spare change as a kid and leading us off in this half hour Ray on the banks of the mighty Ohio. Hi, Ray. Ray. Thank you, us, I can hear you loud and clear, Ray. Great. Hey, when I was 10 years old now, this is a long time to go into 1950s, 1955 actually. You know, money, money didn't come anywhere. And I had the stinkiest job you would ever imagine. It was August. I lived next to a farm. And the farmer's name was Mr. Meyer.

Well, Mr. Meyer had a good friend of mine. It was a workhorse by the name of Babe. Well, I helped Mr. Meyer harvest potatoes and I got reward with that with potatoes. Mom loved it. Then, uh, one day he said, Hey, what to make 50 cents a day? I said, Oh my gosh, yeah. He had me cleaning out Babe's stall. Oh, well, good until I got eight inches past eight inches deep. Babe, she wasn't so happy about that. Now she's my friend, but she backed me in a corner and she peed all over me because she didn't want me to do that. But 50 cents a day, chick. That's it. Oh, my natural. Yes. Oh, man. Wow. What I went home. My mom, she said, I mean, she don't you dare come in the house. Oh, what? This is all just an instant. Yeah. Oh, my goodness. It was fun. Oh, that's why my grandchildren. Yeah. My grandchildren. They think they have a death.

No kid. Yep. Oh, yeah. My dad tells the story here. Oh, you're welcome. In my dad, Cady, did Western Hills Country Club, I think he made a dollar. He would take it home, give it to my grandmother, his mom. And she would buy what several loaves of bread with the with the buck dead. My dad made. So yeah, times were of it. All right, Ray. Thank you, sir. Appreciate it. Hey, Rick is in Green Hills. Hey, Rick, what's going on? What's happening? All right, man. This is fun. Hey, we spent a lot of money with you guys with our company. But I wanted to say that back in the day, I had an Atari. Jane console. Yeah. And nobody had it. So everybody in the neighborhood wanted to play it. So my mom worked all day.

And my dad, he wasn't, you know, he was doing his thing. So I traded baseball cards and other things that I probably shouldn't mention. And it was a beautiful, beautiful thing. What playboy magazines or what? No, no, no, we're talking about stuff you put in a paper or a pipe. Okay. And so I'm trying to be cool about it. Yeah. And it was, it was, I felt like I was doing everybody a favor because back then, you know, in my neighborhood, people didn't even have access to those video games. And I felt like I was doing a favor for them. You know what I mean?

All right, Rick. Yeah. Hey, appreciate the update. Thank you very much. Oh, I know. It was beautiful. Take care. All right. Thanks so much, Rick. Ken is in Batavia. Ken, did you have a side hustle as a kid? I sure did. It was way back in the day. I didn't do the, I did the pop out of thing too, but we, I sold me and my cousin sold night crawlers to a couple of like ocean lake reservoirs and boys and like, wow. In, oh, you need them to fish, don't you? Yeah, you need the night crawlers to fish. Yep. We sold the live night crawlers to a couple of those places and one and one many marks. And then we also sold ice cream bars and popsicles. My grandmother worked at a

creamery and we got the damaged ones and they also served or sold dry ice there. So we had a trite that I would pedal the bike. He would run next to me because he was athletic one and being the bell. So there you have it, night crawlers and ice cream bars and, yeah. I remember night crawlers being in those like, almost like paper carrying things. Would you have the mud and the dirt in there with the night crawlers? Yep. Yep. We, we had them, we had them dozens up. So it worked out real well. Yeah. How much, when it worked out real well too, because he was athletic one the next I could just pedal pedal the bike and he ran next to it. Oh, that's awesome. Gosh, how much, how much would some night, you know, it doesn't night crawlers?

Back at that time, we got about that 25 cents a dozen. Yeah. And, and of course, Uncle Bob that drove us around to these places. We, you know, even kicked in his gas, of course, it wasn't all that, you know, about, you know, we kicked in about 75 cents, maybe a bucking gas and then we wouldn't have it any other way, but it worked out real well. Gosh, that's funny. That's awesome. Ken, selling the night crawlers. Beautiful man. And, and this little town we were in, this is about Wyoming, right? Yeah. And actually, the Riverton, Wyoming, and had a little irrigation ditches all the way through town. And that's how they watered their yards. So we would, we would dam it up and flood irrigate a couple of two or three yards and that, you know, we would, we would, we would come up with probably a 25 or 30 dozen night crawlers every every, you know, weekend. Oh my gosh. Wow. Yeah. Great stuff, Ken. Thank you so much. Ken and Betavia, appreciate it.

All right. Is it Bob in, is it South Bank? Yeah. Well, I just bought from South Bank. South Bank. Besides Cincinnati. All right. My gig. I did it for seven summers. Started as a kid and I was doing it. The graduate graduate school from XU. I said, I got work to do and I left and went by my gig. I did up your way. You're a Daytonian, aren't you? Well, native of Cincinnati, Westside, West Coast. Yeah. Okay. So I did all Delhi Green Township, Middletown, up through my main township Montgomery County and Kettering and such. What did I do? You ask? Yes. House over on the curb. And I don't look for them. So they should do them in California, this cross country. But they'll go along subdivision. I wouldn't work in the inner city or the rural area. But

subdivision paint the people's house number, a little nice white square, nice, neatly stenciled. You got the efficient. I could whip them out pretty quickly. And I got to say, look good. Don't they? Everybody's got one. They're nice and uniform. And how about a buck? This is back in the 60s. In the mid 60s, a buck with like four gallons of gas. Yeah. Yeah. Generally, the misters would say, yeah, looks good. Here's a buck. And then ladies are being the manager at money managers at the house. And looks okay. Here's a half a buck. That's cool. Thanks, bye. I gotta go. Okay. For those folks who had to pay tuition to the school, I let the ex you and I had to work a week to pass the best of tuition books and fees. Wow. If you're on the parent end of that nowadays, they're waiting out, waiting out. Even if the kid doesn't have a semester of tuition books and fees, that's like what, 20 grand? Back then, you know, inflation. Somehow colleges have had massively more inflation than

the rest of the world. But, you know, who does that to hold another deal? But it worked real good for them. And my kids cranked it up again about the turn of the century. And they did it for a couple summers. But years ago, people were a lot more receptive to things going, you know, guys going door to door. Yeah. Like street selling or yeah, like stenciling or painting the on the curve. Whatever. And I remember gosh, our house, you know, we had that done. And wow, that's awesome. As real popular little guy, you might be a little guy that followed me along. Beautiful. Say you weren't great. But good old days. Amen to that. Thank you so much. Bob, appreciate it. Bob from South Mac. Check it out. Thanks, Bob. All right. Thank you. A Lou is in Covington. Lou, did you have a side hustle as a kid? I did, chicken. I just want to say I appreciate that Eric Carmen Raspberry's tune that you play. It's an awesome song. It was played in every bar and every tavern. My freshman year at

the Ohio State University, Eric Carmen from Cleveland, Ohio. Yes. That's right. That's right. So mid 70s, my mom's like, get a job. And I said, now I don't really want to cut grass. So my sister and I dug out a card table and, you know, got the lemonade stand going into Vu Park and Park Hills, Kentucky. And we had a pretty good little business. I think it was 25 cents for a big cup of lemonade. And then the two kids with an older brother down the way, two doors down, that we were kind of on and off with. We were friends and then we'd play smear the queer and someone would get a fat lip and we'd be mad at each other. They were competitive. So we noticed that they pulled out their table. They were selling lemonade. But then all of sudden, our sales dropped off. We're looking down the street and they're getting like iron horsemen and bikers pulling up to their lemonade stand. And we're thinking, what the hell are iron horsemen? Why would they be drinking lemonade? Well, it turns out the older brother was

raiding the mom's refrigerator and pulling out the tall boy of strobe and selling them for a dollar. Oh, man. Right at the entrance of the Vu Park, these bikers were loading up. They said they sold two cases in a day. Oh, my before the police came by. Yeah. Or I thought they might be spiking the spike in the lemonade with something else. But man, it was they abandoned the lemonade right quick. Yes. Wow. Yeah. Yellow color and it was beer. Oh, my goodness. I had to revert to cutting grass, which you know, the embargo on all the oil in the mid 70s. So my dad decided to buy one of his goofy electric black and decker lawnmowers. He's like, all right, the lemonade stand didn't work. Go cut grass. Yeah. Well, the thing is I put up pliers, but you know what I had to carry around a hundred foot extension cord and ask the client if I could plug in my mower. Yeah. Didn't go well.

Did not go well. Yeah. Oh, all right. All right. A good one. Lou fantastic stuff. Appreciate it, man. All right. Is it Rafael in Bond Hill? Rafi? What's going on, what's going on, brother? All right. All right. Great to hear you. Hey, yeah. Um, definitely had a, um, a father's home, uh, growing up. And um, this one took place in two locations. When school without in the summertime, um, my parents, we would drive down south to Chattanooga, Tennessee and Madison, Georgia, respectively. My grandfather, my father was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. So in around the age of five, maybe six years old, my grandfather would take me around to some of the, homes in Chattanooga where he knew the homeowners over the years. And the, um, flower beds that the

homeowners had. Yeah. My grandfather taught me how to get on my hands and need, get my hands dirty and pick the weeds by hand out of the flower beds for, you know, people he known over the years. And so for about in a hot Chattanooga, Tennessee son for about four or five hours, I'll be paid about anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar. And that was my first little hustle. In this, something school without him since the nadi going down there. And so I blew my mind. I just couldn't believe it. But my grandfather, he taught me how to do that. So then since the nadi, my father at an early age, uh, I think maybe I was around nine or so, maybe 10, but um, he watched over me and taught me how to cut the grass. Yeah. And then once I was good enough at that, I could go and cut the grass of the neighbors. Now this gave you a job year-round basically with the seasons since the nadi. So cutting the grass in the spring and summer, raking the leaves in the fall

and shoveling the driveways and uh, sidewalks in the wintertime. Amen. In between that, would be able to on trash day, take in the garbage cans, the empty garbage cans for the neighbors. Yes. That was usually about a quarter there and cutting the grass of anywhere from right around 50 cents from cutting the grass and raking the leaves. And let me end this real quick though, chicken. So the first, uh, when I would just save the money and get little, you know, candies, nilators and a host of apple pie was my kind of go-to bag of grippos and a he's in treat. That was my go-to. But then in 1976, my favorite NBA player and the greatest small forward of all time, 1976, he was released in his signature shoe by Converse. It was called the Converse Pro Leather. And you and the world knows it better as the Dr. James. My father took me down

in downtown, the ins department store and I got my first brand new pair of Dr. J's leather with the red and the star and the Converse symbol $27. But I had the money from my side hustle. Oh man. That is a great story. What's so awesome about this is all the different side hustles we're hearing about. This is unbelievable. Pick and weeds. That is fantastic. The flower beds and then working year round when they trust you when they trust you cutting the grass, raking the leaves and shoveling the snow. Awesome. Yeah. Nothing is this fantastic stuff. Take it easy brother. I appreciate it. Thank you. That is wonderful. Great stuff. Hey, we've got to take a break. We'll have time to take a couple more calls before the bottom of the hour news. What was your side hustle was a kid. The Chikster, Chick Ludwig 700 WLW.

We have a paper route. We cut grass. We shoveled snow. We did it all just to get a little point in our pocket. Absolutely, man. What's so awesome about this are all the different side hustles from flower beds, tonight crawlers, to lake diving at the country club for golf balls. Oh my gosh, it's awesome. Do you remember sugar oil? Oh yeah. Yeah, we used to go. I went out there with three buckets and my two little kids. And I got in all four of them lakes and we took over 500 balls out of there. And I carried two to the car and they carried one. And I was 500 about 350 with good balls. Fantastic. Would you put them in egg cartons? We're going to the top of the hour, leading you right into UC Arizona football out in Tucson and joining us from the inquire in Cincinnati.com, Bearcats, Beat Rider, Scott, Springer, Scott, how are you tonight? Good. What's the Arizona sunset here?

I'm right outside. The media food is, well, the food's inside. Beg a come out, Danny. Fantastic. Before we delve into the game, I just got off an hour of what you did as a side hustle as a kid. Did you have a side hustle as a youngster? Side hustle. Let's see. My first job was cutting the grass at the church. And then I did deliver at one time from the community press, the four seals journal on the east side. And that job went well until one day I was out collecting. And I had my nice leisure pants on, you know, for my leisure suit. Remember those were in Vogue? Oh, yeah. And I got bit by a German shepherd. And I think my mom was more mad that I messed those leisure suit pants up. And so that was the end of that job there.

Great stuff. That was the first beat media job. So, sweet. But beautiful man. But I don't know how those were much of a hustles or what, but no, I don't know. Anywhere you got to have them though, right? You better believe it. And hey, the bear catch at 4 and 0, they'll have their hands full tonight. With a guy that's listed at 5 10, that's probably being generous. But he's a ball of dynamite, man. Noah Fafita, the quarterback of the Arizona Wildcats. Yeah, he's really good. I got to interview him big 12 media days in July in Frisco, the program. And I was taken back by how short he was. But he didn't complain. You know, he scrambles out of jams. The bear catch sacking four times last year. And he still tore him apart. You know, 23 of 31 294. And I touched down. He's been doing it again. You know, last week they had Avery Johnson. They had to try to contain. And he was a bigger guy. This guy isn't going to look

to run as much as everybody certainly can. But if you leave in time to stay in that pocket, he'll pick you apart. No doubt the big 12 offensive player of the week after throwing for 325 yards and accounting for five touchdowns against Northern Illinois. And he's the all-time passing yardage and passing touchdowns leader, passing former NFL quarterback Nick Foles at Arizona. So he's, he is awesome. But I honestly believe the other thing you think is he was at one school. He's never been anywhere but Arizona. So you got to give the guy credit for that in the Arab when people are playing two, three, four places. He's been at Arizona. No doubt from Huntington Beach, California, 510, 190. I think that's being generous on his height. But he is, he is awesome. There's no doubt about it. And the bear cats have to contain him and withstand early on and get into the flow of this game and gosh, somehow some way pull out a victory tonight and give it back to the

wild cats who gave it to them at Nipper last year. They sure, yeah, that was a pivotal game and you see was coming off that loss at Utah and they they wanted to, you know, turn things around and get things going. But unfortunately, the last few November's have not gone that well. And Brandon Soros, we had a bad game that day through a pick on the very first play of the game. He threw another one later only through for like a buck 54 and to feed in the wild cats came in and got the win. But if you're looking at the schedule from here on out, you see he's got some tough ones and you look at today's games and, you know, teams that maybe you thought would not be as tough. Maybe they're better than you thought because I was state beat West Virginia today. 45-42 was a track meet. Yeah. Right now it's it's Colorado, over Texas Tech, it was 7-3 when I came outside and BYU's getting a tough game from TCU. So none of these games are easy. If it's a big 12 game, it's going to be tough. Amen to that. And tonight's game is at a place called Casino Del Sol Stadium in Tucson.

And man, you're getting to see a sunset. It's it's said already now that if you go to my Twitter S-bringer Sports on X, I put some shots out there and we've got the live blog going there too. So I'll be on that tonight. And it's it's already up on Cincinnati.com. So all sorts of fine reading material there, background and whatever you may want. But it's going to be a late night man. Oh, it really is. I have to be like you. I have to have my coffee ready, right? Amen to that. Coffee computer and all we need is you and how about Dan Horde over the next 24 hours. Yeah, him and Tony Pike and Mo will be on the charter, which I think is scheduled to land at 7-30 in the morning. Since in any time. And then I think Mo and Tony do the the morning show with Kim Brew. So they'll be coming right from the airport. Then Dan will have a, you know, I don't if he's sneaking that in or not. Probably not, but you know, he's got the game too. But this is what we all signed up for. Fortunately, I don't have to be back. So I get out here about

in time tomorrow and then I'll be home. And then we start some basketball up on Wednesday when we go to the tennis center in Mason for a double header. So everything's coming together here. Oh, incredible. And you know, the club's going to need, you know, JC French to fourth tonight to play a song game. Yes. And how about the run? He's going to have to. Yeah, the running game. Yeah, he's going to have to throw. Yeah. Yeah. But that running game against Kansas State was devastating. Two hundred and seventy one yards. You're going to win a lot if you do that. And coming in, Kansas State was only allowing 96 yards and the UC gaffer for two seventy one. So if they can get anywhere close to that, they should be in good shape. You can't turn the ball over. You got to find a way to stop the feeder. That's not necessarily easy. It's a little bit of breaking news. A couple of their guys, I don't know that they're necessarily factors this year, but they have been in the past. The linebacker Max Harris and a running back at Ishmael of Maldi MAHDI, I don't know if I'm

saying the name right. In the past, he's run for a lot of yards. He's not on the depth curve right now. I don't know what's going on. But anyway, he's one of those fifth year guys that because of the eligibility issue, he's not dressing tonight. Neither one of those guys. You see how the kid, Janja Lew Hutchinson, they signed from Louisville. He's kind of in the same boat currently in eligible. This is the weird times that we're in where he got a guy on your team and he's allowed to play and suddenly the court says, not allowed to play. And then basketball starts soon. You got guys in limbo. I think the UC case with with N.J. Collins and Phillip Borovikin. And I hope I said that right. And all those guys, I hope that gets resolved. Somehow it's just it's not fair to fans, coaches, players, anything. And it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me that why would you take one class of athletes and not include them in the whole thing. But I'm not an attorney. I don't play one on TV and not on the radio. I do what I do. I'm enjoying watching

Antoine Peak, Jr. And his ability to get the ball out. It's they're going to need some strong defense tonight. Oh, yeah. Yeah. His mother was on my flight to Dallas. I had to go Dallas. And since I did Dallas, Dallas to here. So yeah, I saw her in the airport wearing the Peak Jr. thing and she's awfully proud. But he's he's done a great job, you know, ripping the ball apart. He's certainly put on all sorts of weight. You know, he's six, maybe six, two, T 30, if something like that. He came in at 180 pounds. But I remember when his dad came in at 180 pounds. And in Antoine's peak senior made it to the NFL. So and played some basketball for Bob Huggins, too. He was tough to get some hops. That's right. We remembered that. And since an ad for and oh, for the first time in Scott's outerfield era. So gosh, could it could have ranking. Could have ranking me on the horizon career. Yeah. Possibly. Yeah, I think it based on what happened

today where you saw some teams, you know, everyone thought Florida was a world leader last week. And then Missouri took him to the wheelchair today. And yeah, you got some teams that have, you know, I will lost. There were some some curious games today. Now we could say we're surprised. But if you follow college football, how are you surprised? This stuff happens. You know, kids kind of play one make it. Don't the next week. Home field advantage is a real thing. How bad you want it. And then you know, you get everyone in this era of NIL. I think it's even out the talent. Level. But can you take all those guys that are getting paid and hold them into a team to come together? And that's that's the big if. That's a good challenge. Yes. You do all right. But, you know, this business or the players are making a lot more than the coaches and college. Now I know it's that way in the pros that I don't know. To me and the colleges, I think they need to have some respect. And they need somebody to to bark out things at them. And they need all the

discipline and stuff that a young man does not want. You know, I get all that, that all that stuff you need. Scott's bring her with us from the inquire and Cincinnati.com and Scott, I know we're radio folks here. But what does it mean for the University of Cincinnati and the big 12 to be on Fox national television, man? You can't put a price on the exposure. Well, I don't think so. I'd say if you like the mountain time zone so much. But to your point, 11 o'clock, you're on Fox national and a good part of the world is going to see your team. And maybe there's some kids in the Western portion of the world that you're recruiting that now get to see you play. And so you can win some people over that way. And, you know, maybe this gives people a reason to come home and behave themselves at 11 or once TV instead of out catting around. So you can cat around in the family room and watch the bear cats and the wild cats. That's a catty night. It is going to be a cat fight tonight. Scott, we'll let you go. Get you prepared for

the game. Really appreciate your time. All right. Thanks a lot. Thank you very much. Scott springer. Not on the charter had to travel by himself, but he gets to stay overnight there and come back tomorrow from Casino, Dale, soul, stadium in Tucson, Arizona. This is chick, Ludwig. And you're listening to sports talk on 700 WLW Ludwig 700 WLW. Four hours as sports talk tonight with seven minutes to go. And we are now in the postseason. Of course, Major League Baseball. We're in the division series in both the American League and the National League. Four games today. And it all started with the Chicago White Sox shutting out the Cleveland guardians in Cleveland, three to nothing. And then the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez

ravine Dodger Stadium knocking off the Atlanta Braves five to three. So the Braves and the guardians are both down one to nothing in their best of best of five series. Right now in Milwaukee, the Brewers and the San Diego Padres are tied at two in the top of the fourth inning with San Diego batting. And I have to admit that I'm rooting for the San Diego Padres because their manager Craig Stamen pitched at the University of Dayton. He's from North Star Ohio. He attended Versailles High School, North of Dayton. And was a three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Pitched in the Major leagues. For the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres. So I'm rooting for a Craig Stamen

and the Padres. He still makes his home in Versailles, Ohio. That is just awesome. 91 and 71 this year. First season as manager of the Padres. And then later on tonight. Well, when it's a final two in Tampa Bay, the raise knock off the New York Yankees one to nothing. So Tampa Bay, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox are all up one than nothing in their series. And right now San Diego and Milwaukee are tied at two. And this is a critical time for the Milwaukee Brewers who have major league baseball's best record and all the pressures on them to perform here in the post season where they have failed in the past. So

the pressure is on the Milwaukee Brewers. It's that simple. But I want to take this opportunity to thank all our guests tonight starting off with a Gordon Whitten Meyer of the Cincinnati N. Quire and Cincinnati dot com talking Reds baseball and we both agree. It's a long road back for the Reds. And I don't know how they're going to improve this club. They need better players. And it's tough right now. It really is. And then Joe Goodbury joined us to talk Cincinnati Bengals. And since they're by week in 2025, the Jacksonville Jaguars are 11 and three. They finished the regular season last year winning eight straight games and nine out of 10. Then they lost in the playoffs, the wild card to the Buffalo Bills 27 to 24. And now they're

off to a two and one start. And once again in seven of those 11 victories, Trevor Lawrence, quarterback pulled early. His early is eight minutes to go because the Jags are winning by a lopsided margin. So the pressures on the pressures on the Bengals tomorrow. That's why they've got brought in these veterans. Dexter Lawrence, Jared Allen. To nip this thing in the bud after last week's disappointing loss at Pittsburgh. It's time to go out, get a win tomorrow. And they're without a couple of wide receivers in Andre Yosevich. He's down and Colby Young is down. So and now Dante Myers is your kickoff returner and punt returner. And also,

Samaj P. Ryan can help in that department as far as kickoff returns. So all I can say about the Bengals talk is cheap. You have to go out and prove it that you can bounce back from that loss to Pittsburgh, get to three and one. Hence, stay, get back tied atop the AFC North Division with the leading Cleveland Browns. Who have a negative 14 point ratio and leading the division. Michael Cooper from the Dayton Daily News sports editor joined us and had a blast talking with interviewing Ivy Rastetter, the outstanding left-handed junior pitcher for the two-time state division for softball champion Kent Ridge Cougars. And then we had a fun hour talking side hustle as kids.

Gosh, flower beds, night crawlers, Blake diving for golf balls, collecting soda pop bottles just to put some change in our pockets. And coming up next, UC football, all the coverage at 10 o'clock tonight. And until next time, this is the Chicks, your chick Ludwig saying thanks for listening to the home of the Reds and the Best Bengals coverage 700 WLW.
