3:06So today we have a panel of hand flutterserity girls gather to rate them all from the hottest looks to the hottest messes. Let's get into it. All right, I'm so excited to hear from these girls. Like, you know, with a daughter who's coming up in it, I really want to hear it not that you don't offer amazing advice, Gia. But I feel like I love bringing all these girls in. Hi, Ella. Hello. Hello. Where do you go to school? I go to San Diego State University. So I'm a junior this year. Well, we want to talk to you about what it is like to dress up to go to Rush at San Diego State University, please. Which house are you in? I'm in Alpha Phi. Well, Ella, I think I'm closest to your age, but you know, I went to Rutgers University in Jersey. I don't think it was nearly as strict with, you know, Serrardi Recruitment. Having a specific, you know, itinerary to follow when it comes to outfits.

4:06Yes, everyone needed to, you know, dress fancy and, you know, obviously show up as their best self. But what was your first impression when you went into Rush and how you had to dress? I would say so for my year, it was a little bit different because now Panellanic is transitioned to more of traditional Rush rounds where they have girls wear a specific shirt. So the Panellanic Rush shirt that they wear for starting off with either a lot of girls choose to wear a cute golf skirt with it, cute pair denim, a denim skirt, denim shorts, just anything cute at the bottom. A lot of girls usually wear something short though because it's so hot in San Diego around this time. Like it's 90, it's, yeah, it's 90 today here. It's, it's rough. So that's for open house round, right? Yes. That was the same thing for me. I had to wear a t-shirt and I wore jeans because it was the fall and jersey so you could get away with like wearing jeans or a skirt or something.

5:06Yeah, exactly. I mean, it's still, that's, I feel like that is the round, the opening round is easiest because girls feel the less amount of stress they're, because they're all wearing the same top and then they have more fluency with their bottom. It was different for my PC though. I'm PC 24 because we were online for that first open rack. Oh, yeah. So we had not transitioned back into in person open rounds. So we didn't have shirts. They just told us to wear a comfortable shirt. So I wore, I wore a floral tank top and just you can only see the upper half of me. Yeah. So a lot of girls were on the Zoom and found out this afterwards, but a lot of girls were on the Zoom wearing a cute top and then sweat pants at the bottom because you couldn't see it. It's like newscasters that did that. Yeah, like me today. Right. I was just going to say or any of us. Yeah, you could never tell, but if I stood up, I, you, I was wearing a, I remember I was wearing a, a white floral shirt.

6:07And if I stood up, I was wearing these bright pink sweatshirts. And if you just like saw me stand up, you'd think like, what's going on here? I'm saying. But yes, there's, there's a lot of fluency with the opening round. Every girl wears the same t-shirt going in and it changes every year, the design. It's always super cute though. Very cute. Our panel and a team here does a great job. So those girls wear those tops. And then we start going into the Filo round. And that's when it starts to transition to essentially getting fancier as it goes. What did that stand for? You said Fila. For L'Anthropy. Yeah, sorry. No, it's fine. It's fine. You, you just talk to us like we are children because we haven't done this for a really long time. It's, I'm so used. And this is not something I had. I'm, I was so used to people having, you know, an awareness of Greek life terms.

7:08And I didn't know any of them when I was going through it because none of my family went through rush. No one was, it was my first time. I didn't know anything. So when people were saying these things like Fila, I was like, what's Fila? What's Fila? What's philanthropy? But it's like a flaky pastry. Yes. And then when I was told what philanthropy essentially is for each story, I was like, okay, so this is nothing like what I thought it was. But it's still then usually for that round girls will, which is good about our school is a lot of sororities will put up inspiration boards on medium platforms. Awesome. It makes it way more helpful for girls because they have each other through it to talk about what they want to wear or ask if it looks like something that they asked if they think it's appropriate. You know, girls just want a little bit of validation to help feel more confident, but then being able to see a vision board made by chapters for girls is just so much more helpful and seeing it now happens.

8:15And seeing my chapter post them makes me happy because I can already tell if I was going through rush again. It would be so helpful for me. Yeah. So do you feel like there's a big range? We were just talking about this, like how, you know, down south SEC schools are very love check fancy and big poofy bows and all of that kind of stuff. I feel like I guess DSU is probably a little more casual, but within STSU. Do you feel like there's a giant range between the sororities or are you all kind of similar? I'd say there's a giant range and from what I've noticed recruiting last year, a lot of girls had their own individual style. Yes. So happy to hear that. And it was just so cool. I would get inspiration off these girls. They wear these cute. Belts or jewelry and I was just like, I love this. You know, I like how girls are all inspired off each other and if they want to wear similar outfits, that's perfectly okay.

9:16Yeah. Whatever make you comfortable. But when you can clearly tell a girl has created this perfect outfit she's confident in. It's just that's what I love to see because it shows, you know, there's no set style here. Are there any brands though? Like are there any brands that you think are getting worn more right now this year? Is there anything you're seeing a lot of? I would definitely say addicted. Addicted has been on the rise recently these past two to three years. And that's awesome. I mean addicted is very like well priced very very. Yeah, very affordable. They even have them at Urban Outfitters. They do. Yes. I went into Urban Outfiters the other day and they had a nice collection too. And what I like about it as well as they have sales it's a bunch of different styles I they have crochet crochet clothing. They have cute sparkly dresses. I only know about it because I see it on our credit card bills. I just said so much for joining us. Of course. Thank you so much.

10:25Okay, guys, so let's actually bring in a boutique owner. So an expert in this space. Let's bring in Kelly. Hi. Hi. Thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me. I think it's so smart, especially when you have a cute boutique on campus. My sister goes to University of Michigan and they have this cutest boutique. Whenever I go and visit her, I spend a party party there because they do date. But it's so smart because when you're like on when you go to school and you don't have like a boutique around, I feel like you're constantly doing online shopping, but it's nice to actually have a cute boutique on like near your campus and on site that you can walk to and just have the like accessibility to I love it. So what are you selling out of Kelly like what's big Russian here? So big for a rush. So I don't know if everyone's aware, but like for Arizona, it's a very different style than the traditional rush talk. Swell, they're in style that we all know and love.

11:25LS. So none of that preppy style is really seen for Arizona. We are very much more aligned with LA, New York styles. Very simple, seeing a lot of a lace trim selling really well. Just these little satin dresses that have lace trim around the bust. Colorful satin, not seeing a lot of prints. You'd be surprised at how no florals are selling this year. Oh wow. Just very cool form fitting. And then the color palette is super fun. It's like butter yellow, baby pink, mint, teals and aquas. So it looks like a indie store. It's very new Easter Easter Sunday. Still very hot here. So you're not really seeing any darker colors or any. Nice. Are there any brands that you're that you're selling out of or that have been really popular? So we do have some more premium brands like Guzio and stuff. So there's like this cute little polka dot set that some people are buying for sisterhood.

12:30But as far as our brands, we sell a lot of LA brands that you don't really buy online. So they're more affordable for college students. 50 to 60 dollars for a dress. Also, those brands are more like cotton candy, all of these. You wouldn't really know some of them. You can't actually shop online. They are wholesale only. So they can't go to your do you have a website? We do not because we are so slammed busy. Like I can't even keep up with it. Wow. That's great. Good for you. Good problem. You don't even need us to push you. What about heels? Do the girl I mean, I have to walk. So there's a long. Are they wearing heels? Yes. Kid and heels. We have sold out. We have a little like a let flop wedge. The flip-flop whites are huge selling out like crazy. Yeah. You know, it's just it's a it's a strange thing. We're talking about how much it matters. Right? What you wear and how great it is. If you know, you can actually, you know, show your style and showcase a little bit of who you are. Through your fashion. And is that hard?

13:30Is it not that hard? And you're saying that there's a you of a girl look, right? That you're trying to, I guess, move towards. But it's a lot of pressure. Yeah. I mean, I think every young girl faces a lot of pressure just with the social media world. Yeah. I mean, our sort of stick at our stores like you feel like you're shopping with a friend. All of my sales associates, most of them have gone through rush themselves. They're active members. So these girls will come in. They're nervous. They look like deer and headlights. I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know where. And my girls just like walk them through the process. We even have like these big posters in our stores that say like what to wear for each day. Awesome. Wow. Wow. It's items that are in. So then you can go find it. We walk them through. Okay. You have your dress this day. And then they try it on. They actually come out of the fitting room and show us. And we're like, yes, like that's the one. And then even if they don't find anything, they just leave feeling so much more confident.

14:32Relax. So you can see them relax. Can you dress them for like different sorority houses? Like if you want, you know, if you want to be, I don't know, a DG or a try. Like are there different looks for different houses? No, I wouldn't say so. There's just more like for the feel around they get a t-shirt. So we, we buy like skirts that will go with that t-shirt. It has a pop of red this year. So we have all these red skirts that are selling out. And then we still like, okay, now for your sister hook look, this is what we'd recommend. Now for preff, there's like long or short. And here's our recommendations. Yeah, that's great. You're offering a great service. It's not just clothing, but I feel like you're helping them be able to get through the process. Good job. Thank you so much, Kelly. Thanks so much. 20:38Hi, Izzy. Hi. Hi. We're talking about fashion and rush. And are you going through rush? Are you a, what are you, what are you? I actually just graduated in May, but I went to the University of Georgia and I rushed there and was in a sorority for all four years. So what are the girls at University of Georgia wearing for rush? Mostly like springy floral dresses, kind of some of the cliches with the ruffles and heels and all that stuff. But also, you can totally wear comfortable sneakers and just definitely want to err on the side of modest. You don't want to be like flashing anybody at rush, but there's no strict rules. And it's not super crazy at all. That's interesting. I mean, we're talking to a few people today. And it just, it sounds like there is a different feel. There are different feels at different schools, right? Yeah, for sure. So, so at Georgia, it's more, it is a little more florally, ruffly, modest.

21:40Yeah. Yeah, Southern girl. Anything you could just walk into a boutique in the summer and find something to wear there? Nothing too crazy and definitely not too strict. It also depends on what kind of sorority you're looking for, like each one kind of has a different identity and you just want to wear what you're comfortable and then you'll find the right one. I want to have a question. Do you feel like, I don't know what sorority we're in and you don't need to say, but is there fashion? Would it play a part in whether or not they get asked back? Like if they show up in this outfit that is just not your style or stands out in a negative way or does kind of flash somebody. You know what I mean? Would anyone be, I don't know what the word is, cut from the next round depending on their fashion? Yeah, I mean, I was in capadelta, which has like a reputation for being a lot of out of state girls

22:43and I am from New Jersey. I'm not super Southern at all, going to Georgia in itself was kind of a culture shock. But I knew that I wasn't gonna dress super Southern with the ruffles and like huge shoes and stuff and pretend that I was someone that I'm not, like I just wore what I liked and more, more simple dresses and whatever I was comfortable in and like you can pick up on that when you're brushing someone and see if they're like being authentic or if they're dressing comfortably or if they're like trying to fit a mold to fit certain sororities. So if you like wore something that we didn't like, it's not like we're gonna drop you because we don't like your outfit. Like it's more about personality and a line. Okay, good. I mean, if you walk into rush wearing grunge and like your style is, you know, how's that gonna go over? Do you think designer has anything to do with it? I don't think so. I know all those TikToks of the outfits but the nice jewelry.

23:44Cause I get it girls at Bamba and some people like do show up and wanna wear a designer bag or their jewelry. But I just remember when I was rushing, like I went to Rutgers, so being from New Jersey, I'm sure you know. But I mean, it, no one cared about that at least. And then listen, I'm sure you can do it. If that's your personality and if that's what you love and if that's how you wanna style yourself, I don't think anyone is gonna knock you for it. But I also don't think it's gonna make or break whether you're gonna be in the sorority or not. I feel like it shows a little self-confidence if you are brave enough to come looking a little different. I do wanna know, like talking about coming, looking a little different. I remember I came to preference with the exact same dress as another girl and I was so embarrassed and so is she. We both ended up in DG together and she was one of my good friends. But do you remember people coming in the same dress and is that like a thing? Especially we just talked to a boutique owner and a lot of people are shopping at her boutique for a rush.

24:45Do you think it's an issue? So two girls came in the same dress, would you notice? You might notice if they're in the same room sitting next to each other, but it's not like you care. Like there are thousands of girls going through rush. You're bound to have refeed dresses. Sometimes it's really not a big deal at all. So Izzy, thank you so much for joining us. Of course, thanks for having me. I reach out, how are you? Good, how are you guys? We are great. Great, thank you. We're talking about rush and fashion. What year are you? Yeah, so I'm a senior, which is crazy. Which sorority are you in? I'm an alpha fee. Okay, got it. Awesome. We just had it one of your sorority sisters talking as well. Ella, yeah. Oh my God. And where do you go to school? Say you need to go stay. The Tristis ending, hoping to send her daughter here. Yeah, exactly. My daughter is a senior in high school right now and SDSU is probably her top school. And so when I saw that two of you from SDSU

25:46were coming on the pod to talk, I was like, yay, I get some inside scoops. I'm just being selfish right now, but I'm so excited to talk to you. We'd love to just hear about SDSU. And if it is really strict, or we talk to Ella about the file, which I don't even know how to say it, still, filo week, filo week, filo week. People say it differently. I feel how weak, that's it. So I'm just learning about all of these things. Haven't rushed for a really long time. I was an alpha chi at Indiana. So I know a lot has changed, but with the daughter coming up for rush next year, I'm trying to get info on all of the things. So can you just talk to us a little bit about SDSU rush and about the fashion in particular, and if it's strict or if they have any guidelines for you, and if people follow them? Yeah, so in the summer, typically, most of the sororities and the pedalonic account

26:48on Instagram will post like outfit guides of what each PM likes for them to get the idea of what they should be wearing to each round. So typically, you can kind of really show your style either way, but they just started doing they didn't do this my year, but they started doing like a panellanic shirt, which they do in a lot of Southern schools, where you wear the panellanic, SDSU panellanic shirt the first few rounds. And then I'm pretty sure for like sisterhood and preference and those kind of rounds you can you wear a dress, you can pick whatever dress, preferably something that, you know, you're comfortable in and can be yourself in. And if they're really not super picky, but I will say like, it is San Diego State. So California fashion definitely has its own. Different, yeah, a certain vibe, like a California vibe. I'm born and raised in California, so I'm definitely like a California girl.

27:48But when it comes to dresses, it's kind of very, there is a different range of all types of dresses that you'll see in recruitment. You could be, you could dress like a Southern bowel, honestly, and there could still be, you know, different types of, all different types of colors. Like it really doesn't matter. But I feel like a lot of girls style it up with like jewelry, definitely accessories. I remember for rush when I was going through rush, I had my nails done a certain way. So I had like, Chrome and my nails because I wanted them to like ask me about that or like, I wanted like something to talk about with the girls. Because I was like terrified. I will say that when going into recruitment at SDSU, it can be very, very intimidating. I have heard that compared to a lot of other schools are schooling me very intense with. Oh, really? Yeah. Oh, Trace Dex, this is gonna like, no! No! No!

28:49Thanks, me, I don't know. Only I will say like, just because San Diego State is a very social, like we have a very social Greek life. So as long as people going through rush, as long as you're someone who's socialable and like can talk to people, you'll be fine. Like this is why I tell anyone that was like, that will ask me like, if you can talk to people and you can hold a conversation and like, I don't know, not be like boring per se. Yeah, totally. You'll be totally fine. Well, I have a follow up question for that. If you have like resting bitch face. I think a lot of people do. So I don't think they'll be able to do it. Oh, I do. I know, me too, me too. I do too. I don't think they'll take off like points for that. Okay, good. I get it. So do you think that like if a girl comes through and she has a really unique style, do you think that shows like confidence

29:50and maybe you'd be more likely to like pass around to the next round or do you think like being kind of homogeneous and making sure they blend in and kind of match the style of your sorority is more important? I think being unique definitely gives like a topic of conversation. Like I said, how I like kind of tried to like put some unique stuff into my outfits when I was rushing because I did watch like a lot of advice videos before I went in. But yeah, honestly, I don't think as my experience doing both, like being recruited and also being a recruiter, we don't really like discriminate against any type of specific outfits. Like I'm pretty sure I try to blend in a little bit too, but also kind of a unique plot to it. But I will say like the unique outfits really were like wow. Like we see a girl walk in, she's wearing like some like something we've never seen before or has her hair styled in a way that we're like wow, that's cool. Yeah, we'll definitely like ask them about that and it gives us something to talk about. And yeah, it's, I love seeing unique outfits.

30:53But it's definitely like not to discriminate against people that dress like to fit in because it's definitely, it can be like an environment where you're like I have to fit in with all these other girls and like I have to be like. It's super intimidating, right? Girls, girls I like, I don't want to wear something that they're gonna, they may like or may not like. Mm-hmm. Honestly, the truth is, I think that it's great when people dress unique because it really shows who they are and then they will end up where they're supposed to be. I totally agree with you, yeah. What do you think about the amount of money that people are spending these days on their outfits? So like, there's like a little part of me we did a podcast last week about how much people are spending on their dorm rooms. I think maybe we're losing track of why we're in college a little bit or do you think this is like, you know, like a great way to show who you are and like, you know, have your personality come out right in the first couple weeks of school? That's a great question. I think that since I lived in Texas for a little bit so I know a lot of people that went through rush and south, I know a lot of people in sororities down like Texas and the south

31:55compared to and then also here on the west coast. And I will say in the south it's very intense when it comes to how much money you're spending on your outfit. Honestly, the more money you're spending, it seems like the better it is for the outfit out there. Like, it seems definitely a lot more intense at San Diego State. Like, I'm pretty sure I wore like, I'm exposing myself here but I wore a dress that's like a dupe of like a really expensive dress because you have to buy, I feel like you have to buy like, kind of a good amount because we didn't have a shirt that year. So I bought a few outfits and I didn't want to spend like, a whole lot of money on it but I wanted to just look good and like, feel myself. But honestly, yeah, I think it's a way less intense with how much you're spending like out here at SDSU but in the south like it seems like a topic of conversation where, you know, you do the OOTDs and you're like, this is from here, this is from there. Yeah, it's like, who can say the most name brands?

I feel like I'm very proud of my school and like, Greek life at my school. Not to say that other schools are doing it wrong. Right, of course. And in some school societies and some environments, it's not as inclusive and like can be very cutthroat. And like, I don't think money should be a problem like, or like a factor of whether you're going to get on the sorority or not. Totally. It's like insane to me, but it is the reality, especially like Alabama or places like that where they really are like, what are you wearing? Like, where's your chest from? And then you say, around and they're like, okay.

39:29It's good to have a down south girl. Yeah, we're kind of on the topic of, you know, sorority rush and what the girls are wearing nowadays during, you know, recruitment and the rush process. I think especially when it's viral on TikTok, so a lot of the schools down south it's tend to be a little, I guess, focused on the name brands that they're wearing and, you know, a little bit more pinpointed to that for what they want to wear for during their rounds of rush. But coming from old mist, do you feel like that is as important? And that's kind of what girls are focusing on? Or do you think or just give us an insight about that? And what is like the of and what girls are spending for their rush out? I think people definitely like spend a lot, like a lot of people have super nice jewelry and like shoes and like clothes in general. And

40:29like a lot of girls are wearing like similar brands. Like there's a lot of like Amanda Uprature, like Farm Rio and then obviously like more like designer brands like girls are wearing like Gucci shoes and like whatever. But I feel like, I mean, people definitely care a little bit what you're wearing just in the sense that it's like you don't want to be like too revealing or not like fancy enough. Like you don't want to be overly casual for like the different rounds because they get like progressively more fancy, I guess. I don't know or like formal. Yeah, they you dress up more and more. Yeah, you like dress up more like the further you like get through the rounds. But I definitely say that like standing out or like having something different is honestly like now I feel like better than having something like nice because so many girls are wearing like the same skirts, the same dresses, the same shoes. And like even though they they may cost a lot more money, it's gonna be a lot more like memorable and you get more compliments if you're wearing something that's like unique. I love that. Yeah, I feel like that like if everybody

41:30looks the same, you know, a lot of us when we dress it kind of like reveals our personality. And so if everybody's dressing the same, like are you really getting to know the girls that are rushing your house? Yeah. But yeah, I think a lot of girls like end up matching with even like active in the house because like they also wear like once you get further in the rounds like they also are wearing like dresses and shoes and stuff like nice heels or like espadrilles or sandals or whatever. So I think that it's also just like better like I know for the first rounds, you wear like a you wear like shorts or like a skirt. But like I've seen like more recently a lot of girls doing like longer skirts like just that's something different or like a midi skirt just like verse wearing just like shorts or like a midi skirt. Have you seen anybody like super over the top when they walked in you're like oh my gosh, what are they wearing? I think there's definitely people who do go like really like formal or really like out there like super like puffy like for the first round. Like you just wear like t-shirts and then like bought out like you pick your bottoms.

42:32I've seen people wearing like cowboy boots like really like bright like pink sparkly cowboy boots or just like super tall like pumps that like it's like really cool and unique but maybe not the most practical because you are walking around and it's like super hot out and everything. So it's just kind of like funny but a lot of people wear like flip flops and then change like right before you go into the house or like slippers because like it's just you can't be in that all day when you're like walking around and it's a hundred degrees in humid but yeah people definitely are out there with their outfits which is fun. I I rushed in the 80s I'm very old and I remember I still remember my feet hurt and went to the University of Maryland and it's a very large campus probably like where you go and I remember like dying and thinking god I can't do this again tomorrow my feet are dead. I know there's definitely like a lot of people have like band-aids in their bags and like the blister like patches so yeah definitely just part of that. I love that the ballet flats are coming back so maybe that's maybe that's yeah yeah they are coming back well yeah because you have to just

43:35put them in your bag and just as like a safety backup when you're like walking around. They still look cute but I think that's kind of like the moral of this you know wherever you go to school there's obviously girls that are gonna go over the top and there's girls that are gonna you know maybe not. I think whatever you do choose to wear as long as you just you know for try your most authentic South wall also being not less and also trying to you know give your best self forward. I think that's like all you guys could ask for. Yeah trending wise it seems like so like I said I went to school in the 80s it seems like over the years and now here we are at 2026 where things are really over the top you think that trend is gonna continue because now I hear from a bunch of you girls that they have a t-shirt that they wear for at least the the beginning rounds like I think that kind of tones things down and it stops it stops the ramping up so early in the process. Yeah. I think that there's gonna be a trend that maybe like this over the top expectation is

44:35gonna be like tamp down a little bit. I think like maybe and also especially like people who go to California schools like a lot of my friends who go to like or like even west coast schools in general like their rush they wear like denim shorts or like even like borderline like nice athletic shorts like to their first days of rush with the t-shirt first like going somewhere more southern like no one is wearing anything like that like everyone's like much more formal like in a nicer mini skirt or like nice like dressy shorts so I think that also just like depends where you go but I feel like it is so really important to like look formal and I feel like a lot of people like misconstrue that with being expensive rather than like what actually like matching the formality is if that like makes sense. And I think a lot of the girls that came on today as well were saying that a lot of the sororities were now posting mood boards. Yeah. Kind of just like little things so people can grab like grab some ideas see what is expected for each round and I

45:38think that's super helpful as well. Yeah I agree. I love the idea of the mood board because you're not arriving at on campus with the wrong outfits and it's too late at that point. I mean I guess you could you know have things rush ordered and delivered but I mean what when do you think the girls start shopping for their outfits like how soon before they are headed to school. When I went to school we showed up with like the stuff we already owned and a comforter so things are so different now. I think girls definitely start shopping like super early like for their dorms probably like right when they get in. I know people start like looking for stuff and like a lot of people have like monogram pillows or like monograms like jewelry trays like all that stuff obviously takes like longer to come and some people get like actual furniture for their dorm. So like obviously those things have longer lead times as well but for a rush I think it also depends where you live and like where you're coming from because I know people whose parents were like super involved and like their moms were like doing all the shopping and like finding all the things and then I know girls

46:40who did like rent the runway or like newly and just like had not tried it so far. So smart too. That's so quick or rent the runway or any of those rental clothing services even for handbags as well. Yeah that is so smart. Because you can just get everything you need and like not have to do. I mean a lot of this stuff you're not going to want to wear it again or like you might just not have a lot of occasions to wear it to again. So yeah but I think it's a range. Well thank you so much.
