Enjoying this little kind of quiet time right before next week when everything starts. I'm just super excited for football to be back, man. It's going to be an amazing first week of football. Yeah, I want to level set. So Devin, I recording this on the Friday, previous to opening Friday, where, you know, after the Wednesday, Thursday games. So I talked to your brother when he was at the facility with Shreger a couple weeks ago. Okay. And I'm really getting itch now, right? Like you're excited for training camp. You get some practices. It's great. All right. A preseason games coming. This is great. This is awesome. Then you get to like the third preseason game is seen a bunch of third stringers play for three quarters. That probably are not going to make the team, but maybe they can be practice squaders. And then you have no fourth preseason games. We've been sitting here for what 10 days already

3:10now with no football. Do you have that itch to see a real game finally? Well, yeah, because it intensifies right away. And my brother and myself, we go to the Wigland, we do their preseason games. So you kind of ride that high of like, okay, we're back to have we went to a few joint practices. And I know now there's more and more joint practices. And if if you're one of those people who go to them, it really gets you going because now you're not just watching the preseason. You're watching good on good. You're watching these matchups. So you're like, man, let's let's go. Let's go. And then even like the college football slate hasn't been like super enticing to sit down and watch. So I know everyone's itching to get out there and see some real football. Yeah. So we had the joint practice against the dolphins. I think we all kind of know what the dolphins are going to be this year. So when you're with the team and you get through, you know, I'm not sure if you didn't, you know, scrimmages are joint practices when you were playing. We did some back then with Tom Koffe when he was with the Giants. How much did you really have

4:11a feel for your team when you got to the end of the summer? Did you really know what you were or did it take that first regular season game for you to really figure out? Okay, this was real. This was fake. I really know what we got here. I don't think I don't think you know what you have from a straight kind of football X and O how good we can be. But you when you go to those joint practices, you find out what you have in the locker room. It's when you saw always talk about it in New England. It was the first time you got to be all patriots and you got to go out there and train a camp word of patriots. We're going against somebody else and we get to just go and try to insert our dominance as a team. You get to rally. Like Julian Edelman was a guy you hate it practicing against. He practiced hard, extra shoves like all of those little things. Once you went to a joint practice, it was the first time you rooted for him since training camp started. So like that was I think the biggest thing. You kind of figured out what you were as a team. And

5:14then obviously some of those key kind of position battles, they start to kind of make it to way out. You start to see who rises to the top when you go to those joint practices. But it's still going to take the first month of the season to really decide and figure out what is our identity. Who are we? How are we going to play? All right. Put me in the locker room at the Dallas Cowboys or the coaches room at the Dallas Cowboys here. You're preparing for this game. You're trying to game plan for the giants. They have a new head coach. They have a new offensive coordinator. They have a new defensive coordinator. Some of the talents the same. But there's a lot of changes there too. How do you prepare for a team like the giants in week one when you have an idea of what they might try to do? But really you haven't seen anything on film yet as a player. How do you prepare for a team like that? It's not always easy. We've always talked about whenever we were in these kind of situations, you would try to take the head coach and who he is and who he's been his whole career. And like this is a little easier because you know John Harbol. Like John

6:19Harbol was in Baltimore for 18 years. You can kind of figure out the flow of the game. What's he going to be like? What is he going to be demanding of his offense and defensive coordinator and from special team, especially with a Harbol team? You know they're going to be good on special teams. So you're going to harp to your team all week and we can't give up a play on special teams. They're going to look for a play. And I think after that you try to break down each coordinator. I think this is the hardest part. I remember being a defender and you tried to figure out okay this is what this offensive coordinator likes, but this is his personnel. So who is going to be the guy that fills whatever role is going to take over like did he have an Isaiah likely at tight end when he was he like those are the hard things that you got to try to figure out. You're trying to place people in positions even though this might have been a running back in his previous team. This might be the tight end or this might be a receiver that they have that fits the mold. So figuring that out and I think that's where coaching is a big part of it. You need your coaches who

7:24usually have been a bunch of different places been with different coaches. You need them to insert like this is how I think the game might go. This is a guy they might use as a player that sometimes a little harder. You haven't especially if you have younger players. You don't know what that I think of a R bell Reese. He doesn't know what that means. He's still trying to figure out things. So that's what you need your staff to have experience and forget for Dallas with Caleb Downs being out there like they're going to have to figure some things out. But I think it's the greatest weapon for the Giants. You could be working on stuff this whole week that nobody's seen. You didn't do it in training camp during your open practices and they're going to have to prepare for that and they have no idea. And I think especially getting ready for the Giants, right? Is you have met Nagi, but then you also Greg Roman and you also have Brian Calhan. So what pieces that are taken from each one of these three guys is that the Greg Roman run game and maybe it's the Nagi, you know, you know, RPO spread game with the with the chiefs like people that I've been in every practice. I still know what the final product is going to look like. I can't only imagine what the cabbos are trying to

8:26figure out. And I think I think for Christian Parker as a defensive coordinator, you're new in Dallas. And I think you coming into this game, you think about what you just said, hardest thing to figure out because so many coaching staffs are doing this now where you have great minds everywhere. So you are going to, I think what you said is 100% right. You're going to get things in the run game between Greg Roman and Brian Calhan that are going to be a little bit probably all over the place from a how do we gain plan this? And then you're going to get naggy, what I would imagine, some pretty creative place probably in the red zone, probably situational football on third down. You can't plan for all of that. But as a as a coordinator, you can say, Jackson Dart will impact this game more than anybody. We are going to pressure him. We're going to switch looks. We're going to discuss like that to me would be the goal as a defensive coordinator going against the offensive. We got to make it hard. Yes, the coaching staff, they're going to drop all these different things they want to do. We have to confuse Jackson Dart and control the

9:32game that way because when we played him again later, now we'll have more film to break down to see what they're doing. But for it is open a game Sunday night football, we're not going to have really any idea what that is. Let's just go after and make it hard on the quarterback. So as someone that played against a bunch of John Harbaugh teams, if you are in that locker room with the players telling them, all right, this is what you have to be ready for when you play a John Harbaugh coach team. What would you tell him? You can't get bullied when we played against the Ravens every time we would talk about we need to match their style of play, how physical they're going to be. We need to match that and then take it up a notch because not that you you're not a tough football team. It was their trademark. It was something that when you played against them, they tried to go out of their way that if you sent somebody across the middle, it was going to be Ray Lewis or Terrell Sons was going to get into it with somebody on the edge like it was that and on the offensive side, it was the run game. It was different guys that they had running the ball

10:32downhill for a long time. They had McQueen at fullback, which was a present like they are going to do things that when you walk away, they want you to say, hey, you just played against the New York football giants and it felt like I was at a bad street fight. That's what they want to create. So I think for Dallas, yes, you haven't high powered off and you have this great quarterback in Dak Prescott throwing a ball. If you don't match their physicality and say to hey, we came here to be physical tonight too, that's to me when you get in trouble against a John Harball style team. You already mentioned Christian Parker in one of your previous answers. What do you think that defense ends up looking like? Is it going to look like a Vic Fangio defense? Is it going to be a little bit different given Parker's his own guy and they also have different personnel. They also turned over half their defensive personnel with veterans and young guys on defense. When we line up on Sunday night, what is that? What's going to be the basis of what that Cowboy defense is? Yeah, I think I think how we started this conversation. This is going to be an adjustment game for both sides. The defense and Christian Parker's defense, they don't fully know what Matt and Aguying the offense is going to bring. And on the reverse side of that Matt nagging the offense, they don't fully know what you just said. Is this going to be

13:36a straight just identical Vic Fangio style defense? Is he going to have a Vic Fangio style defense, but what more pressure? Is he going to send different guys that he thinks, hey, we didn't have these guys when I was with Vic. Now I have this guy. What he does best is getting after the quarterback can meet Blitz and them. So maybe they Blitz more, maybe they send more secondary pressure, maybe they play more man like those are all the things that you don't know. But I've always thought about the first game being one of those we have to get to the sideline and we need everybody locked in looking at the surface telling us what they see. Hey, this looks like a cover four. Was it cover four? Did the safety stay here? Did the safety is going to like that's the communication you need in game one, especially playing against, you know, both sides of the ball, where there's just a lot of newness players personnel coaching staff. So I think this is a real not like everyone talks about halftime adjustments, not a big halftime. This is a every series adjustment every time we get

14:37to the sideline figuring out what we see. I always go back to 2007 when the Giants had Steve Spagnolo and in the first two games that year, they gave up 80 points. All right, they could not stop a leak. It was brutal. He's a great coach, right? They figured it out. They turned out to, you know, by the end of the year, they're one of the best defenses in football. What's the key for defense that doesn't stall a new system with a lot of new players to get off to a fast start? And do you feel like for defenses, especially it can be feeling out process for the coordinator and the players for the players to learn the scheme and for the coordinators to figure out what their players can do? Do you think that defenses often have slow starts and how can you avoid those? Yeah, I remember even in 2014, we get Brandon Browner, we get DeRel Revis. And there's this feeling of like that was the last pieces to complete a good defense. And we open a season and we go down to Miami, we lose and it's just it wasn't the feeling that we all got throughout training camp. Like it was like, man, we're going

15:40to go dominate. And we start off the season two and two. We go to that's the famous. Yeah, I remember that. Go to Kansas City and Kansas City crushes us on a Monday night. So I think it does take time. Like I think Coach Belichick always have this phrase, A-Fellows, we can't dip our toe in the water. We got to jump all in. But when you have a new defense and you have a new coordinator and you have new players everywhere, how do you just jump in? I'm not 100% sure what the guy in front of me is going to do. The guy to the left like, yes, we've been in training camp together, but we haven't seen every situation. We've been going against our offense. We've gotten familiar with them. Then we had a couple of joint practices. That's not a lot of time on task together. So I think you will have a little bit of a feeling out process where I think offensively you can practice a bunch of different things. At 2020, we had Cam Newton. There was no preseason games, nothing because of COVID. Sorry. We open a season against Miami. We open with so much quarterback gun run. Like they weren't fully expecting that. So I think you have a little bit of an advantage as an offense that you can

When you take a look at some of the personnel on that Cowboys defense, if you're in that Giants offensive meeting room,

17:46what are some of the areas that you think you might try to attack in week one, just knowing what the Cowboys personnel looks like? I think the first thing is you got to make you got to check to see a aren't they going to stop the run? I think that's one of the biggest things that games that the Cowboys struggled with last year and obviously as a defense. There was a lot of games they struggled in last year, but it started with running the football and getting a running game going and then it opened up a lot of different things for the offenses. And then I think from there, you got to test outside. I think they've spent a good amount of money up the middle of their defense, trying to make their defense better. Obviously with Kenny Clark and Quinn Williams, you add Caleb Downs in there at that nickel slash safety role that he's been playing, but Doron Blanc's been banged up and they got Rebel now coming off last year. He was heard and he came back and there's some promise in there. But what exactly does that look like? For a long time, they had to mark his Lawrence and Michael Parsons, I'll part of that pass rush. When you play in a secondary and you have those kind of guys rushing in front of you, you sit on every route,

18:50you can be aggressive. When you lose those pieces, it forces guys to cover a little different. I think the Giants have some of those guys that can go out there and make plays. Obviously, they'll see where Malik neighbors is at and what's going to happen with him. But I think even the young rookie feels like these different guys that you've brought in, you want to see a guy like Isaiah likely, how are they going to guard him when he goes into slot? Is it going to be all Caleb Downs? If we split them out wide, are they going to play man to man on him and match? Those are some of the things in advantage. I think they have, they got to try to get to them early. I don't think we spoke last spring. What were your feelings on Downs coming out? Because he kind of played similar positions to you. You guys are similar sized. Were you, were you as high on him coming out to colleges? Everyone else? I was too. And I had a little inside because Matt Patricia's defense of coordinator, I was right. Was my longtime defensive coordinator in New England. And he just, and he said what he loved most about him was he said he knows everything. Like there's nothing that he doesn't know a part of the defense. He knows where everybody lines up. He's

19:53getting guys lined up. He's communicating. He's running the defense. So I think for the Cowboys, obviously the play style and the player they needed, but they also needed a guy that was going to try to make everybody else around him better. So I think he was a perfect fit. It seems like throughout training camp from, you know, following the different reports seems like he's been a headache in training camp to the Cowboys offense covering guys showing up in the run game. So it's always interesting because no matter what you're a rookie and you go into your first game and you're going to make rookie mistakes. You're going to try to figure things out. So I think he has a high ceiling. I think for the giant still you got to see, all right, where's this guy at right now? I don't care where he's going to be in two years about an end of this year. Where's he at? Game one. How can we attack him? How can we give him different things that, you know, makes it seem like he's seen it before, but it's a little different. I think those are the things that you've got to make a hard. I know for me, I was once a rookie out there playing in those games. It's tough. Each

20:55game is a learning experience that you get more and more experience out there playing football on NFL. All right. Let's flip it. You said if you're the giants, first you want to test the Cowboys run defense. I got to imagine if you're Brian, Sean Heimer and Clay Adams. That's the first thing you can get testing the Giants defense to write, given how much is struggling that area last year. And no Dexter Lawrence now. Yeah. I mean, you look at this game is kind of shaped by two defenses that had a lot of struggles last year. And when you struggle the way that both these defenses did, it's a lot of turnover. You had change. You had different people coming in. So I agree with you 100%. I think especially early in the game. Now, I think the Giants is a little easier to say. We're going to run the ball. You got a young quarterback. I think for Dallas, when you have so much experience and you and you know your offense revolves around your quarterback, I think they really need to dial in and say, Hey, we're going to hand the ball off. They're running backs and not the feature of their offense, right? When you have a CD lamb and you have a George Pickens, it's human nature to say, Hey, man, I have these, I have these beautiful cars that I have in my garage.

22:00There's no reason to keep them in there in the summertime. Like, let's go. It's early September. We can still show these things off. So I think they have to caution against that a little bit. You've heard good reviews coming from Giants training camp of how their corners have played. I know Paulson and Debow a little bit of struggling, but when you think about how well Deontay Banks has played throughout training camp, maybe maybe for the Giants, you have more confidence. But I think after you run the ball a few times, I think Dallas is going to say, Hey, we do have these weapons outside. Take a shot. We're not 100% sure that you can cover these guys outside. We are going to attack and attack and attack. And I think ultimately that is how the game will be decided. That press got his arm with these Cowboys weapons, Arda Giants able to stop them and Arda Cowboys able to hold up enough in the passing game because that's the thing about playing the Giants. If you don't establish to run and you tell your offense a line, Hey guys, go block Brian Burns and he knows it's a pass. Oh, yeah, go block all these other guys that they

23:04have up front. Go block Abdul Carter. Go block these guys. They are some down after down. Then it becomes tough. But if you can establish a little bit of a run game, which I know Brian Shotheimer, I'm sure is going to be all over. That could make it tough for the Giants for Sunday night. I think the window for the Giant's defense here is to try to get the Cowboys into second or third or long, right? You did. Because if you look at the personnel in the Cowboys offense, their interior offensive line and all really good. But Terence Steele, according to the reports out there, he's had some struggles at right tackle. Tyler Gain has played well, but he's been hurt a lot the first two years in the league. So I think if that's the window for the Giant's defense, can you get in situations? You can unleash your edge guys and try to attack those Cowboys offensive

26:14tackles and pass situations. Yeah. And John, when you say that, would that kind of leads to is, the Giant's will probably be aggressive on first and second down. Hey, if there's a blitz that you kind of like during a week, don't doubt it. I can see Harboh saying, don't doubt it. Go with it. Let's do it. Let's be aggressive. Let's get them in third and long because they just traded for project drones. They just brought in another tackle to compete. And maybe it's not a real competition right now week one because Steele has been there. But if he has any problems early in this game, you might see Jones get in there. And now once you have tackles rotating, who does that mess with? That messes with the quarterback because he's not 100% sure what's going on out there. How's our protection holding up? So I agree 100% what you, I think this is a game where we could possibly see the Giant's being super aggressive on first and second down to create the longer down and distance. And then once they get in that down and distance, now they can think, hey, we're going to go coverage here. We're going to let our four man rush do do what it does and see if

27:15we can cause chaos with those four and then put as many guys in coverage to try to stop a George Pickens and a CD lamb, but telling your corners, hey, we're going to have to hold up on early downs. And you know, maybe play some zone, maybe double team a little bit, play too high to get the guys over top. Maybe those are some of the things you do. But while you're doing that, you're also sending some zone pressures. All right, final two questions. One, how do you think this NFC East looks like this year? Is it going to be super tight? Do you feel it is more of a flat division? Do you think there's more of a set hierarchy? What do you think the NFC East plays like this year? NFC East is back to being with the NFC East is we have no idea. I think obviously going in, the Eagles will be the favorite. We like we all understand that, but they have a lot going on in their building. AJ Brown leaving. Well, there's jail at her. And how do how do the other receivers? I think if I take Smith to me as a lock. I think he is what we think he is. I think he's a big time player. He's going to play well. But everybody else around, Deonte Wicks, MacI lemon, like

28:19already these guys are going to fill a role as the offensive line going to be able to dominate and just handle all the same. Come on, Barkley. What does Jaden Dales look like now? Is he going to be fully healthy and ready to play all 17 games? Have they filled some of the spots they laws, army, tons of it? The commanders, which seem like this is going to be a team that's going to be a problem. Now it feels like there's more questions in there as answers. And then obviously with the Sunday night matchup with these two teams, I think the giants look to say, hey, we're not ready to win a division yet. But we think we'll be competitive, which to me in the back of your mind, you're like, we can probably win this division. If we go and do some of the things we think we can. I think for Dallas, I think they think this is the year. We put a lot of resources into our defense. There was a feeling like if our defense was just 50, 50, you know, kind of 50% milliliter role, meaty ochre, we would have had a chance to really compete last year. So when you add all of those resources, you instantly think this is our division. So I looked, I don't think Philly

29:23will repeat. I think this is we get back to the norm of 20 years of a different champion every year. I think we get back to that trend this year. I love it. All right. I'm not going to ask you to predict the score of the game. But give me a feel for it. You think this game's going to feel like is it going to be 17 14 grind it out like every possession matters is it going to be more of an up and down like giants Cowboys week two last year with Russell Wilson and Dac thrown the ball over the yard. What do you think the feel for this game is going to be, which, you know, week one of the NFL, I don't think it was an idea. Any idea what any of these games you feel like. But what do you think is more of an offensive oriented game or the defensive oriented game given all the changes both these teams have had? Yeah. Man, as I say, this we always try to preference. We'll remember everybody week one is the ultimate liar. It's never usually how it is. But I think this is a little bit more of an offensive heavy game. I think I think this will be a little bit more up and down. I don't think quite like the game we got last year between Dac and Russ, you know, with that much offense. But I do think Matt Naggy will create different things because you have a quarterback

30:29who can run a little bit who is athletic. I think he will have so many different things for Christian Parker that they will find success of some things. And I just think that press got and for the Giants defense, it's a tough match up week one. As you're trying to prepare, I think they'll have some success. Again, I don't think quite the shootout, but I do look for a game that we're upper 20s to low 30s and a game where it's like, all right, they came out early. We go in a half time, 14, 10, 17, 14, and a few more scores within a second half. I think kind of decides this game when we actually break it down. I think the defensive will have a little bit of a slower start. You know, based on your answer, I just realized I don't think either one of us has said Jackson Tarts name through the last 20 minutes we could do in this as a DB that someone that watched them last year. What was your take on Darden? And where do you see him heading in year two? For one, I think when you're a young quarterback and you get in in this situation, he got an even

31:30spend a time in New England this offseason and talking to Davido. And it's so much of like survival. All right, this is the right way to teach you, but we don't have time to do all of that. So look here, if it's not there, you're athletic run. I think I think Tom and Davido fell into that situation with Dave all because Dave all didn't have time. Like you weren't the original guy. Now I think Jackson Dart a little bit was the risk, but you're rookie and Dave was fighting for his job that you don't have time to go through the whole progression and what you need to do. Whereas I think now for Jackson Dart, you're getting the basics. You're getting the fundamentals of playing a quarterback position. And now we're moving up and we're advancing you one step out of time and we're moving up here. Then we're here to I think now he's getting that and Matt and Maggie obviously spent a lot of time with Patrick my homes like they're both athletic quarterbacks. And I'm not saying Jackson Dart is my home. I'm not saying that at all, but I just think he's now going to get built

32:33from the bottom up as a quarterback of everything he needs to do. So some of the things that everyone hated last year, not sliding, when to get out about. I think those things will be kind of in the past because he's realizing not just how to play the quarterback position, but how important to the team, to the franchise, he is by being on the field like he's learning that Matt like Matt naggy is ingraining that into his mind every single day. So I think he's going to I think he's going to have a jump, you know, it reminds me a little bit of Drake May, you get, you know, Gerard May on their year one. And there's a lot of instability because he's trying to figure out his job as a head coach and the different resources he was given were way different to what my variable was given when he came in and Josh Lee Dale's now comes in as your offensive coordinator. They're not worried about going somewhere next year. They're building you up. And I think that's what we'll see from Jackson Dart this year. Don't think like man, he's going to be the MVP this year,

33:33but I think you will see really good quarterback play from this kid. I think that's a great answer. Right, Devin, you guys have the opener. You have the rematch of the Super Bowl. Then you have giant scab was everybody. What you're doing next week on NBC. Oh man, next week's going to be a blast. We head to Seattle Tuesday and we'll be out there for a Wednesday night opener and Seattle. And you just think about for one being in that state and when they drop a banner. But now they're dropping a banner against the team you be in the Super Bowl. So for the Patriots, you talk about rematch and everybody's like, it's not a rematch because we don't win the Super Bowl, but they're dropping a banner and you're like the banner game. You don't want to be the banner game where they're setting up to try to embarrass you. So super excited about that. And then I'm a Jersey native. So I'm very fortunate and happy that we'll be at midlife Sunday and not going like Seattle back home back to the West Coast. So I think selling this Sunday night for one of the all time classic games,
