Engaging Different Teams at Work

In today's episode, I'm going to be talking about knowing when to engage different teams. There was this one time I learned a very tough lesson, the very hard way. Basically, I was hosting a RCA call, root cause analysis call to determine what the issue was. And I made the mistake of inviting the tech people and the business people in the same call. Now, if you work in IT, one thing you will notice a lot of times is, whenever there's an issue, there will be a tech bridge and there will be a business bridge. It's rarely one big bridge. And the reason why is because both of these groups speak completely different languages. 10 minutes into the RCA call, there were business folks

1:02that were yelling at the tech folks. And I thought, yo, please dial it down, but they wouldn't. And the tech folks were now getting defensive, and they were yelling at the business folks. It was a blame game the entire time. And I thought, why did I invite the business folks for what should have been done is I should have hit up the tech folks. We should have troubleshooted this issue together. And then I should have updated the business folks. But instead, I invited everyone in the same call at the same time. And it's just a name calling session. So if you are going to have a call, understand that different people operate with completely different hats. There was a time that I was working with the implementations team. And I noticed their strategy is to write a lot of emails. They will make these gargantuan email threads. Because from their perspective, they're always going back and forth with a client

2:04and logging down all the details versus a guy in IT. He hates writing emails. It annoys him. He's like, let's just get on the bridge and get this issue resolved. So whenever you are engaging different teams, they are going to speak different languages. They are going to have different preferences. And if you're one of those guys that's just putting them all in the same call, then you are going to be dealing with a lot of headaches and a lot of people yelling at one another.
