Does Roger Goodell Sees Super Bowl Potential in the Browns' New Stadium?

0:00The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima. Obviously a huge day for the Cleveland Browns and for North East Ohio and I hope a huge day for the NFL. Still got three and a half years before we officially open, but I think everybody is finally beginning to sense that this is a reality where I'm going to have a new dome stadium. I think it'll be the best stadium in the NFL, which says a lot and couldn't be more excited and more pleased with where we are today. I want to run about the Super Bowl for Cleveland and once there's a dome here, you can tell us when Cleveland can expect the Super Bowl. The stadium is clearly going to be suitable for Super Bowl. I think the real challenge is going to be how to transfer, make sure this is here. The airport is important for us, hotels are important for us. All of the facilities are the biggest challenge for hosting the Super Bowl now. We have probably both the 200,000 people come in for Super Bowl. It's great for economic impact, but it's hard for cities to be able to meet some of those requirements on the facilities.

1:01Just what can you say about this new building still being accessible to those die-hard Browns fans that have followed this team since it's a good set. There are a great question and I can promise you, we have talked as much about keeping quote affordable seats in the new stadium is anything else. The dog pound will have the exact same number of seats, but it's going to be a way better experience. We will have seats that are affordable just like our seats are now, so we have a heavy focus on making sure anybody that wants to or almost anybody wants to come to our games. I'm looking forward to getting in that stadium for a November. So 70 mile an hour wins. I'm going to let you guys know at 7 o'clock, we're going to have the Roger Dill interview that Darryl and I did with obviously the commissioner of Roger Dill. And then later on, you're going to know I want you guys to notice during the interview, which is not long. It's not long. I want you guys to notice the difference in the questions during the interview. Oh yes. Because I think I was set up and you know what? I enjoy it. I'm glad I got set up that way and I will tell you about it later. But I want you guys to pay very close attention to the questions that are asked during the interview. And I want to know later on, whether or not you believe that I did it the right way. I can't wait. Anybody else did it the wrong way or certainly vice versa because I think I probably did it the wrong way.

3:03But you know what? We'll find out a little bit later on. So that's the only thing I'm saying about that right now. I'm going to sit there and preview it for 50 minutes. We will have the Roger Dill interview coming up at 7 o'clock. Yes. Did you get a chance to dig into the earth a little bit? No. They did the site. No. With the guitar. No. No shovel. What you would think it's just this big thing and so it's like, Oh my goodness, luminaries. Mr. Commissioner of the county and all this was not that it wasn't that. There were a lot of guys and Browns jerseys and so on and so forth. Did they have to come with this? Did they have to come with their piece? Did they have to come with their piece?

4:04Did they have to pause it? You know, you had Dave Jenkins sitting right there and you did ask him a question about PSL. So I can't I guess I can't really knock you for it. Um, you really, I don't know why I'm pounding the table with this baseball. I'm sorry. You had to throw that in there about the PSL. Well, I feel, I feel bad. Can we all know they're going to be here? I was very jealous that Kenny got chance to talk to the commissioner. You could have went and I couldn't offer the opportunity and I you decided to stay home and drink and play and watch basketball and have your daughter handle snakes in the front yard. Unfortunately, we did not have a sitter. And so I was thinking, could I bring the kids have a snake be the babysitter? Could I bring the kids to the event? I don't think that would have went very well and do not think, um, my son's screaming for mama, mama, just cry, baby, all throughout the entire process. I don't think that would have been good for anybody. Oh, that's fair enough. But I was very jealous. How did, uh, how did the commission look in person boy? His hair is always thinner in person. A new hue of red. They're always thinner in person. What do you tell you? You say he does the, well, if it's a die job, it's a good die job.

5:07It's a little different. It's not like the, uh, it's not like the Mike Sheffsky where it's like, why is your hair jet black and you're in your seventies? Like, no, this one's a good one. This, and it should be you guys are millionaires. You guys should have good die jobs. I'm not above. I'm not above you getting a die job. Now my hair is going to gracefully go to less Levine land at some point here and I'm just going to be gray and that's the way it's going to go. But since I, and I keep saying it on the air, so I know that I can't do it and I can't color my hair. But if you're going to go the hair color way, you are more than welcome to go the hair color way, guys, it's just you got to do it. You got to match it with your age. If you're a 70 year old man and you have a high stress job like commissioner or the NFL, I don't know if he's, I don't think he's 70, um, but if you're a, a man of middle to advanced age and you have a high stress job like commissioner, yeah, there should be some gray in there. Okay. If you're a high stress job like the, like the Duke basketball coach, the men's basketball coach, which is everything there at Duke, yeah, you shouldn't have jet black hair. I'm sorry. What are you going to say? 67. Wow. Looking good for 67.

6:08Outstand. I saw what you did on with your hands. Are they still doing that? Are the kids still doing that? Yes. Stupid kids are doing it. Eight of them. Still. Uh, did he look? Which one was worse? The DX chop? That's the only way I could say it on the air. Guys, I know what it's really called, but that's how I celebrated every touchdown in high school. I don't know how that's, that's how it all was done. Yeah. I mean, were you really an American male during the night, the late 1990s and early 2000s? If you did not get the tension for doing the DX chop, I say no. Go ahead there. So you, you said that he looked good, a little slimmer in person, um, the stress levels of a commissioner, you know, every time you got the Mike Floreo's of the world that, you know, are trying to expose the Pablo Torres of the world, trying to expose the corruption and the scandal of the NF harness journalists. And I, I just, I think back to what an amazing life it has to be, be in the commissioner. And you set it on the phone with me. Oh, it's amazing. You set it on the phone. There was a day that he was in Northeast Ohio that I think directly led to what happened

7:12yesterday. We were at that game. And I got in front of me. It was December 17th, 2023, Kenny, bears, browns, where it was, was it Darnell Mooney who dropped the, uh, uh, the Hail Mary, the absolute, uh, they should have beat us with, and we might not have made the playoffs because of, would we, well, actually, you can't say we're cursed because we were cursed that guy makes that catch, but we were cursed to play the final week. But yes, we had a winning the game 2017, but I remember that early in the morning, Darnell writer was all over. He said, uh, there are going to be some luminaries at this game today. And it was going to be, uh, Jimmy Haslam was going to be entertaining Mike DeWine. Yes. Who is there yesterday with his wife, Fran? Oh, very nice. I did not have any wine. Oh, come on. I thought they were, I thought they were serving some champagne or some bubbly there. Well, no, to be honest with you, if I'm going to be honest with everybody, I got out a little early. Yeah. I don't know. There were some things to do at the home. We're getting ready to go on a trip. I don't know where we're going. We're getting ready to go on a trip. So at some point, we got to get to the fact that Ken doesn't know where his trip is.

8:13I'm like a dog going to the vet. Some believable. I, I'm not lying to you. I don't know. I know. It's going to stop the show. It's tracks. We was putting a black bag on your head and then you just show up at a place. I mean, that would be more fun, wouldn't it? You have to count the speed bumps. I'm getting on a plane tomorrow. I know that. I don't know where we're going. I have no idea. I know. Well, I told you my neighbor got a package. It's search bells. He's going to be sitting there going, okay, okay, just like the guy from Taken. My neighbor got a, he got a package to do. I told you to golf at Atlantis. I'm like, great. I'm great at golf. That's going to be fun. So I know I'm going to the Bahamas of some port. That's one of the places. Yeah. That's one of them. And the other ones I just, I don't know, we're going. So good luck to me. We're going with the family going with all the kids and neighbors and neighbors kids. The whole thing. It's going to be a whole big deal, man. And no one's going to be able to leave this one early. No. No, I can't leave early. Oh, like my brother-in-law did. No. No, they know leaving early. That's an old timer. Unless you want to go stuff and get on out. Unless you think you can swim it. I wouldn't try it. Yeah. Anywho. So that day.

9:14Yeah. That day, if you remember, because who was there in addition? It was. It was Roger Gidell, the governor of Ohio, the governor, I don't know if Fran was there. The governor. A couple other people there. It was miserable. County commissioners there, some of them. The weather. The weather was so bad. It was windy. So bad. It was like a rainy book, which is even worse than the snow. It was just one of those quintessential Cleveland weather days, and I remember we talked about it. It's like what a day to show off, because we knew why they were there. I mean, everybody knew why they were there, and they wouldn't confirm it's like, you know why you're here. Come on. Come on. That's not kid-kittering. Forever wonder had it have been an incredible sunny day, beautiful sunny day, if the commission would have been like, is this worth all the hassle? He turns around. He turns around. Seems like you're looking great. There's people in sailboats going by waving, big browns colors and stuff like that, just waving. Nice north east Ohio day. He turns around going, well, you guys need a new stain for no, we're not doing this,

10:14but no, we had a typical late season north east Ohio day, wind was swirling sideways rain. It was like kind of storm snowing, but then kind of not snowing, and then it just rained, and it was just bad, and everybody, we were losing most of the game, so everybody looked miserable. Justin Fields actually kind of played half out of his shoes in that game. He had one touchdown pass to Cole Komet, which was like, man, there's something here with this guy. I'm not sure what it is. I don't know if he's ever going to be able to harness it, but there's something here with this guy. And then we ended up coming back and winning, and that was great, and I'm telling you, I think that was today. It's like, oh boy, this weather is rough. Yeah, the pipes are starting to burst in here, and things like that. Maybe it is time that we start to put some stuff together and get you guys a new stage. And so now we're here talking about. Here we are. Five fours. We're talking about WrestleMania's. We're talking about Super Bowls. I did not ask the commissioner about WrestleMania, I imagine he'd go on the commissioner of football. I'm not the commissioner of wrestling. I don't. I imagine he wasn't going to do that. So, like Dave Jenkins could ask him about WrestleMania, and I'm sure he would know

11:17that. I think it's in play. Anything you guys think of, I think it's on the table, right? David Gilbert was there yesterday. So anything you guys think of is going to be on the table for like what they could do. Now personally, I don't think there's a chance that Hell WrestleMania would come here. No. I think they would come here for like a two-day summer slam. I just don't think they'd come here for WrestleMania, I don't think they'd do that. But maybe I'm wrong. It just seems to be that they're going in a different direction, the whole WWE thing. But when it comes to other stuff, what's wrong with the summer slam? What's wrong with that? What's wrong with the Royal Rumble? We get a Royal Rumble. Why can't we do that? Please give me a Halloween havoc. Give me a Halloween hat. We can have a clash of the champions. Yeah. We can have a clash of the champions. We can have a bunkhouse stampede if you want to, hell. We can have all of it. Sold out. Except for, except for probably WrestleMania. Final four is there. Yeah. Big 10. It's the big 10 championship. What's going to be a thing? Is it forbidden? Is there bidding there for it?

12:18Well, I'm wondering, can you get, like, Ohio State has played at the stadium before and it wasn't like a thousand years ago. I remember coming up and I forget who the hell they were playing at Brown Stadium. And I remember Earl Bruce used to do the pre-game show, Reston Peace. And I thought, I want to say they were playing Toledo. They were pulling me. It might have been Bowling Green, but I know they played at the stadium and so it was like, well, could you? It's only 68,000 and maybe Ohio State would say, absolutely not. Maybe not. But they just don't want to give up any cash and it's, I don't know if there's going to be bowl games, but can we host a playoff game? Can we host a playoff game at the stadium? Like anything you can think of, listen, they built, if we're going to do something here, like I do like, let me say this and yeah, like we are in friendly terms with David Gilbert, but I'm not like, David, hey, what's going on? I'll just say, like, I think they're really good at what they do and I think that we probably have the best one out of the region and I'll throw Chicago in there as far as leaders are concerned about bringing events here.

13:18And so it's like, hey, if we're going to do something here, like we might as well be good at hosting events. Like everybody else says, I think a lot of other cities are complaining and doing, whoa, is me. And it's like, hey, we're pretty good at having a party here. We're pretty good at hosting events. I saw a lot of people when it came to Cleveland hosting the draft, a lot of people were just disappointed that we couldn't have more people because everything that was going on at the time in America, but when you look at like what Pittsburgh gets, all I heard was people complaining. And then they still had 700, 800,000 people, but all you heard was people complaining. It's like, well, if you guys are going to sit there and complain about it, we'll take the draft back. I'll take the draft every year. I don't care. It's a convention of football. We're right here next to the Hall of Fame. We might as well have the convention of football here every year. Didn't you get the feeling that we were getting another draft that we weren't or were? Oh, I think we are. Yes. I think we are. So back in the rotation. Yeah. Because I think that they did a really good job. And they jump through all the hoops and they want to do all 32. They don't need to. See, this is what I don't get. If you're going to have the rotation for the Super Bowl, then you shouldn't have to take

14:21the draft to those cities. You're so right. If you're not like, there's, there might be some cities that are in a rotation for a Super Bowl. And we don't need it for LA. We don't need the draft. Did Nick say that? I think Nick. That's a great idea by Nick. Yeah. I didn't hear him. Nick, if you're listening and he doesn't sleep. So yeah, Nick, you're right. That's a great idea. If you want to have a rotation for Super Bowls and rotation for drafts, I, that's a hell of an idea. I don't think that you move the combine because I think it's still supposed to be a giant. But we'll take it. We'll gladly take it. Is it close? It's not close to the hospital like it is there. I mean, there's hospitals close, but it's not like right next door. They're just dancing tunnels. Yeah. What the infrastructure? Hell with it. I don't mean anything. It's fine. Folks Indianapolis. But better watch out for us. We're coming for you. We're coming for your combine. Coming for everything. Coming for everything. Yep. Candy. Candy can't host everything now. Big 10 championship game. Whatever it is. We're going for it. That's the way it's going. It's going to be formidable. But we're coming. Tough. Coming for everything. That's a tough one right there. But do you feel any more optimistic? Like I heard Earl the Pearl.

15:21Earl said, uh, Earl said we go in nine games this year and immediately there are people going, you're high. And I go, I wanted to text Earl yesterday and go, Earl, I've been there before, buddy. A lot of people are going to say you're high and say you want to say it, say it with your chest. You know what? You don't want to have to go ahead and say it, brother. You don't want to have to go ahead and say it, brother. You don't want to have to go ahead and say it. You don't want to have to go ahead and say it, brother. You know, there's a newness. There's always, that's the great thing about the NFL is they can always capitalize on something being new and turning fans into believers. And there's a lot of new right now with the Browns and you've had a lot of people say, how you're building the team the right way and you're just missing one piece. And that piece is very vital, but everything else around it, I, how can you not be optimistic right now? Yeah. Right. Hey, can I share a crazy theory today at 8.45? Yes. Of course. I have a wild ass theory about all that, okay? With some folks are going to take his disrespectful because it doesn't concern this year's team, but I have a wild ass theory about all that coming up at around 8.45.
