Hour 3: Daryl Ruiter Critiques Deshaun Watson’s Consistency Before Week 1

0:00I'm coming up at 8.20, Darrell Ryder going to join us on the show. Never too early to shop for Christmas. And you could have done some shopping yesterday if you were a Browns fan. I think I'm going to let Lime take it away on this one. You know where I'm going on this because sometimes you're like, what do you want me to say, Ken? Is this the you brought this to my attention and John Sable brought this to my attention? I went, okay, something's going on here. It was just a two hour only sale that we saw with the jerseys. So what was going on? Arty down. What was happening? People were losing their minds thinking Shudor was getting traded because his jerseys had like a crazy discount online. And you know, that's been the running gag for a while. Anytime you see somebody's jerseys mark down like, oh, what do they know?

1:04Because they're always the first to know. Well, I won't call it crazy because I was also a person that said that they were taking context and off the billboards. I noticed them off the digital billboards for Cavs stuff and I thought he was getting traded and then he was traded like a month later. And I was doing champions pose like a bastard that day. Same thing. Remember when they were tearing down the Deshaun Watson signage? We knew that was the last time we'd ever see him start a game for the Cleveland Browns. Until this year. A hush came over. So what actually happened yesterday was like 50% off Shudor Sanders jerseys. Yeah. Darrell was all over the fanatics or where was it? Where was it? Where was it? I thought it was marked down even more than that. But then, you know, Darrell was covering this nonstop. That's why he's our Browns be reporter. Well, he'd be joining us on a 20. It was like 70%. He goes. I'm saying 30% off. Yeah, he's seen screenshots for 39, 99 right now. Yeah, he says everyone can relax. Shudor Sanders jerseys are off the 70% clearance and back to normal price. And people are like, it's because of you guys, Darrell, you guys all overreacted to this

2:08and cost us our big discount. Yeah, I was going to say everybody can relax, relax. What? It's like the neighbor I keep telling you about. I told you the story a million times who right after the first episode of sopranos when the whole neighborhood was getting HBO for free. And she goes, I'm not paying for this. And they're like, you shouldn't be paying for this. And they came and turned it on. I never forget the guy climbing the pole. Don't say anything. Just don't. Anyway, this is the thing that I've noticed. There's a pattern with Shudor. And this, this is because of his fans for good and for bad, right? He is so popular that the overreaction to everything that happens with Shudor generates all this discussion. And I do think it also leads to the overreacting like, hey, he might not be active on game day. He might be third string. It's like, I think people are enjoying getting a rise. This is coming for me. I know it's funny. You enjoy getting a rise on everybody. I have it times, but I'm not going to lie. I didn't think Shudor was going to be third string.

3:10So I pooped the story. And I know it probably killed our radio segment when other shows were doing hours on it. And I'm like, yeah, don't believe it. I don't believe that the tailing green is going to pass up Shudor on the depth chart thing. And I didn't believe he was going to get cut. You dumped all over. I didn't believe he was going to get traded. These fantastical things, I think, are designed to get the reaction because the Shudor fans react so much because they're so loyal. And I say for good and for bad. Sometimes there's bad with that. Sometimes there's really good. Well, you want to end the bad with it because when I was on the phone with you yesterday, you can't do one without the other because what were we talking about? So you were the one that told me that too, I went down with an injury. I didn't know what type of injury it was. I just left it and it being an oblique. And he didn't like the way it was described at first is that he'd like through a pass and fell to the ground and wasn't moving. It was very dramatic. It turns out it's an oblique injury, put a knee down. It was kind of holding on and then Cooper rush ended up taking the first team snaps for

4:11the rest of the day. So I'm like, well, you know, had there not been the checkered past with the Shudor fans, saying a lot of really bad things about Kevin's to fansky as a person, which I think we got to be a little more careful with how we talk about these things. Like I, I, Kevin's to fansky probably for the first time in his life with a big group of people became the biggest racist ever. Like he probably didn't want to invite that back in. Like the, the Falcons probably don't want that. And that's what I'm saying. I'm going to be careful with how you talk about these coaches. Like you can't go to the race card immediately because you think a coach doesn't like a guy. Well, this is, you mean you're talking about fans and then you, but it's one thing for fans to say you told me that Dion was retweeting some things that was. Yeah, Dion was going wild with that stuff and acting like, like the whole, remember the hungry dog period like that didn't exist. Like Kevin didn't bend over backwards and try to work with Shadour and because there

5:13was this narrative out there that he hated Shadour, then he became a racist over it. And I don't know. Kevin's probably going to have to work with African American quarterbacks and have a relationship with African American quarterbacks. Well, I don't think like you could say Kevin might not be the world's best coach in the world. You could say he's a, he, you could try to make the argument. He's a bad coach. I'm not going to make the argument that he's a bad person because we know him as a person. He's not a bad person. Yeah. Being a racist is a bad person, right? I think that getting like, okay, but when fans say things, it's one thing. When you told me that dad was right between some stuff that, when he got the job in Atlanta, that's enough. There was a bunch of nasty stuff that Shadour's fan base. Some of them very close to Shadour have worked with Shadour on certain projects. They were putting stuff out about Kevin Stofansky and Dion would retweet it. All that. And I'm like, this just hurts your chances of getting opportunities in this league. Well, because this is not smart. This is why I do, like just turn my phone off when it comes, or turn the app off when

6:13it comes to this stuff because it's like, I'm never going to be able to get through with reason is you say you want him out of here. Okay. Where else is he going to go? But everywhere, the other places that might take him in, you don't want him because of all these other reasons that just seem to be fantastical. So when I say that this is his only place that he has a real chance in the NFL, and I got, I don't get nearly the stuff that you get. But when I get hammered for saying that, I'm like, guys, if we really wanted to go down that road, if you think that the NFL is just brainwashed, that they like Kevin Stofansky, okay, who's side are they going to take? They're probably the other NFL teams as well, and including the Atlanta Falcons would take if there is a side to take, would take Kevin's side. I don't believe there's a side to take, but they see that type of thing. They don't want a part of it. They'll go with it to somebody else. And so when I say that this is the best chance and may very well be the only chance he has to be a starting quarterback for any given period of time in the NFL, you know, they get

7:18all upset about it. Like there are certain things that happen that have kept the name, the conversation going, and this was just to me the latest one where I go. Of course, there's a we have a Jersey sale going on here that's 70% off, and it starts this whole big hull of blue on a week that we're getting ready. And then really we haven't really talked about them that much this week. But I remember when Todd came in, there was a bunch of instant, even from Shador, and then this is not as normal. This isn't a Shador thing. This is any player. Anytime you get a new head coach comes in, it's like, yeah, the communication is better. This is better. This is better. This is better. Hey, the reality is this is a second straight year to totally different coaches have had the exact same story, the exact same message to Shador, which is you're not ready. You're just not ready yet. Doesn't mean you're not going to be an NFL quarterback. Doesn't mean your opportunity is going to get cut short. We all agree he's going to start more games than any other bronze quarterback to share. If he stays out, well, they openly root against the other court. And they're openly rooting against the other guy.

8:19Yes, we've taken the calls earlier today. Nobody cares about Dylan Gabriel and he's injured anyway. So he's going to get a great opportunity here, but we've had two different coaches say the exact same thing, not ready to play in the NFL right now. So maybe it's not the messenger. Maybe he's just not ready. Yeah, but that's okay. But this is where we go in a circle because I've told you, if you and I were doing a show at 105, three, the fan and Dallas, and we have never been to Cleveland, what do I know Cleveland for? So I would find this a guy from Texas. I would find it much more believable that the Browns are messing this up than him messing totally get it. I mean, you understand the same thing. So we can get as defensive as we want, but the history tells us that yeah, they're not going to believe us. We can shout it as much as we can. We've done a lot of things that you and I have actually been locked up on some things that aren't popular when it comes to quarterbacks in general and set some things that we know we know to be the truth. It doesn't matter. Their history is blamed right on them. But so this brings me to the same point that I've been making, which is if and I hear

9:20it all the time on this station and everywhere, basically that should or totally outplayed was so much better than to Sean Watson. They're starting the wrong quarterback. Well, if you think that's the case, how are you not calling for the organization and the coach to be jettisoned? Like how are you not like if they can't get this decision right and should or was that much better than to Sean Watson? And you know, on brought up something Darrell that I've talked about with other coaches and I talked about with Kevin like six years ago. And I just haven't brought it up with Todd at all. Like Todd is going to be really put to the test as a game manager and a offensive coordinator here because so many guys, I think when they go from offense to being a head coach, they

13:24kind of go with what they're comfortable with and they stop managing the football game and they cost their team games. Well, I'm going to be interested to see how conservative Todd is or does he just let it fly on Sunday? Now, I asked him about that earlier this week because he has openly talked about how he's not really worried about the next job. He has waited a long time to get this opportunity. He's doing things his way. And so I'm going to be very curious to see if he takes what many head coaches do, a conservative approach to not just the game plan, but how they operate within the game. You know, does he go for it on fourth and short like Kevin Stofansky did? Does he take the points like Kevin Stofansky would not do? You know, does he turn Dishon Watson loose and just let him chuck the ball down the field

14:29and see if they can get vertical with the passing game and generate those explosive plays early to kind of maybe get a little something going or do they go conservative and they do the dink and dunk and the screen game to get into a rhythm. So I'm real curious how this thing is going to go on Sunday and how Todd Mucken not only manages the game, but how he calls it because it's easy to sit here and talk about, hey, you know, wait a long time, get this job and doing it my way. We're just going to, you know, go for it and leave it all out there. But also at the same time, you know, whether or not you keep that job long term is determined upon how many games you win and typically, you know, in an effort to try and win those games, head coaches tend to be a little more conservative on game day. Darryl, if you were to listen to this station all week, which I know you do, Darryl, you have basically heard fans and hosts give to Sean Watson no chance to have a good quarterback

15:30game. If we got in a little too far, have we, have we gotten a little over exaggerated about how bad of a quarterback to Sean Watson is like is he incapable of having good moments? Um, he's capable of having good moments, but no, you've not gone overboard. Um, he's, he's not good. Okay. The quarterback room is not good. Why are they starting him? Because he's the best of what they have. Okay. And so, um, that's not saying anything, but, uh, no, he's not good. He, he misses basic throws, uh, with no defense on the field. He kills worms and then he'll throw a beautiful ball and you go, okay, he's back. So, um, it's, it's, no, I, I don't think people have gone overboard. I have zero expectation that this guy is going to be able to do anything to help the browns win with any semblance of regularity. Yes, he's going to make a play here or there. Okay. Pretty much ball quarterbacks do that.

16:31They give you a play here and there, but it, for me, it's about consistency. And I don't have a lot of confidence that the Sean Watson has the consistency that's going to be required for him to have sustained success. But he's the best of what they have in that room. That's why they're going with him in week one. And yeah, you crossed your fingers and, and hope that the, uh, improved supporting cast, uh, with the rookie receivers, uh, Denzel Boston, Casey, Kasey, Konsebs, young, Quinshine, Judkins is healthy. Dylan Samson is look good. Raheem Rocket Sanders is look good. Harold Fanon, Jr. is coming off a, a great, uh, rookie season. You just hope that you've moved, uh, Jerry Judy out of the X receiver position. And you're going to move him around now. Uh, so you just hope that this supporting cast is going to be good enough to elevate, uh, the quarterback position because there are going to be some plays where you're just going to bury your face in your hands. Are we going to see Austin Barber start at Rick Garard on Sunday? I think there's a pretty good chance that Kevin Jenkins did not practice yesterday, uh, with

17:33a, you know, back injury. I don't know if it's back spasms or, or what, but he left, uh, practice early on Wednesday was limited and then did not practice yesterday and also to keep in mind. I mean, these things, they tend to work themselves out, um, one way or another and, and I, you know, the, the coaching staff Todd Monkin had said, got late in camp that, uh, you know, Austin Barber, uh, was coming along and, um, you know, they weren't ready to name Kevin Jenkins, the starting right guard. We had just like all assumed that the starting off, the line had been, you know, set pretty much. And so that was a little bit of a surprise when he said that Austin Barber is going to get a look at that starting right guard job before week one. And now here we are, uh, you know, on Friday, we'll ultimately see if Kevin practices today and what his game status is, but I think there's a better chance than not that you'll have two rookies on that, uh, starting offensive line, uh, in Austin Barber and of course, uh,

18:33Spencer Finneau at left tackle. You think that's part of the reason that your door is not playing on Sunday? What, what the rookies on the offensive line, you get, well, it's not just rookies on the offensive line. You got five new ones there. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's a whole new line. Uh, you know, I, I think there's, I really think that the decision to start to Sean Watson, it doesn't come down to just one singular thing. I think that there are just a lot of factors from, you know, he's a veteran, got the experience to, you know, all those, the pre snap assignments and thing in processing and things like that, the Sean, you know, might be a little further ahead than Shadour is there. Uh, you want to give the Sean one last shot here, uh, after everything he did to, to get himself healthy and get, you know, get back on the field. Uh, yes, he legitimately does give the Browns their best chance and Razov right now. He really is the best quarterback that's in that room. But look, we're going to see Shadour Sanders at some point here. Okay. You know, rebuild offensive lines to your point, Ken.

19:35So I, there, there are so many reasons, I think, uh, why, to Sean Watson is starting week one, but, uh, I, I think within a month and a half or so, uh, Shadour Sanders is going to be on the field. This is starting quarterback. Uh, I could argue that nobody suffered from last year's poor offensive line play more than Quichon Junkins. We obviously didn't see him in the preseason much at all and training camp even. What are you expecting out of the running game because we know that's going to be a huge formula for this team to actually look competent. Yeah. Uh, I look, he's healthy. Um, he looks like the player that they drafted in the second round. Um, last year he looks like the guy we saw early in the season. Uh, I would agree with you, Anthony. Um, I, I think that he got worn down, um, because there was a point where he was leading the NFL in yards after contact. Um, and then that started to, to slide backwards his yards per carry started to slide

20:35backwards and then it got hurt, uh, you know, suffering that dislocated ankle in the, in the broken leg. So, um, he did a great job rehabbing and getting himself healthy again. And you wouldn't know that he suffered that injury just watching him in training camp. So I know we didn't get to see a lot of them in the preseason. That's by design. You want to save him for the regular season. I don't know that there was much for him to show or prove in the preseason and, uh, you know, hopefully this offensive line can, uh, can do enough to allow him to show folks how good of a running back he is because I do think he has the potential to be one of the better running backs in the league. So you know what? It sounded a lot like Kevin in the post game. I, I have a, uh, I have a hot take for you. Who? I don't think this, uh, I don't think this Rams team is going to be the, uh, the super juggernaut that everyone thinks that they're going to be. Whoa. Oh, come on. If you're going to do it, do it. I, I don't think they're getting to the Super Bowl. I really don't. You don't know. I don't just because of one game. No, because you know what? They're, this is, you know, throughout the history of the NFL, we always see this where teams have these big off seasons right and they, they bring in all these star players,

22:40either through trades or just throwing bags of cash at them. And then the, and everyone hipes up the team at all. This is the team to beat and, and, and, and then they end up flopping. The Rams are older. Okay. Um, yeah. The quarterback situation doesn't look all that great. Uh, although I would take it over what the Browns have. And I just, I'm not sold that they're just this invincible monster. Yes. I think they're going to be a good team, but I don't think that they're going to be, uh, I don't think they're going to win the Super Bowl. I, I really don't, I don't even think they're getting to the Super Bowl. So, um, but don't be good. Don't make the playoffs, but yeah, no, I, I don't think they're winning the Super Bowl. They're getting to the Super Bowl. Darrell, do you believe that they did the right thing by traveling to Australia the day before the game? Oh, absolutely not. And that's showed. I mean, you watch that game. One team looked like they were well rested and the other team looked like they just walked off the plane

23:41and they literally just walked off the plane. So a little surprising Sean McVeigh kind of blew that one because they're so, you know, they're, they're so it. I hate, I hate talking about analytics and stuff like that. Uh, but, uh, they're one of the organizations that do it really, really well and applying data and information. And I'm just a little surprised that, um, you know, uh, that, you know, he decided to wait as long as they did. Uh, to make such a long trip. Isn't just that they were putting the game. Is it just as easy as that that they, they, they, they basically treated it like a preseason game? Well, the second half of look like they treated it like the preseason game. I mean, it was, that was, that was, that was not really of, uh, it was not a great game. It, I mean, the first half was okay, but it got out of hand in the second half. And yeah, I wasn't, uh, yeah, I wanted to turn the thing off, but it, it, it was like, you know, you're driving down the highway and you see a car wreck and everyone's doing the rubber neck.

24:43And while I was doing some rubber neck and then the second half, I couldn't take my eyes off that disaster for the Rams. Darryl Ryder. Do you tell us who you're picking yet? Uh, no, you didn't ask. Do you want me to ask now? Are you going to make it wait until Sunday? No, I, I made my pick last night with, uh, coach Riz on our, uh, preview, uh, YouTube show. So, uh, I'm sorry, I was in football practice. I know that's all right. Um, well, no coach, coach Riz took the browns. Uh, he has them scoring three touchdowns, even though they were, you know, stretches last year with the browns didn't score three touchdowns in a month. He's very optimistic. Uh, I am not. I, but I do think the browns cover, I, I think I went like 24, 17 or 23, 17, something like that. I've got him covering, but I don't think that they'll win. All right, Darryl, fine. You're mad at me now, because I, you know, I just feel like I'm the mayor of a ghost town. Like, okay, yeah, there's five people there can, you're, I don't know what. If they win on Sunday, you guys get to take victory laps.

25:45Yeah, but if they lose on Sunday, it's going to be even worse. Does that mean people just, because people are just going to call me a homer and an idiot in like, I can, I can do with those things for other stuff. I just, I really do for football reasons believe that this will probably be the only game I pick him to win. And I believe they will win. Like, I'm not picking him. I'm telling you right now, I don't see myself picking him next week. I just don't. I don't see myself picking him even at home against Carolina, which is kind of like a, you don't know what type of team they're going to be. I can't see myself doing it. Yeah, I think Pittsburgh would be the one, would be the game. Maybe. Yeah, I, I, my pick him on, you know, Thursday night. They always play long Thursday night. As long as the Sean Watts is quarterback, it's hard to pick them, because he's just not shown any consistency out there, you know what I mean? And, and, and I'm not make, you know, and I'm not saying you are. So don't take this. I know you're fine. I make my picks based on what I actually think is going to happen. And I, I think the Browns will play well. They'll look like a better team. They'll be competitive, but I think in the end, Jacksonville's experience in their talent will

26:48ultimately win out. And, you know, they'll win by six or seven points. But, um, you know, the folks that have the Browns two score underdogs here. And I just wanted one because I did I expected here to come in here today and go, okay. Yeah, Miles had four sacks and the Rams ended up winning even though they only traveled 24 hours out to Australia before the game for crying out loud. You might as well crown the Rams. Here we go. I really did. I really did because all this stuff seems to work out for the Rams. And when other teams try to make the same decision and just get some people fired. I don't know if it's a horseshoe that they're carrying around or they just have that culture and they're clicking and they're finding it all cylinders. I mean, I remember I told you a couple years ago when like McVase contract was coming to an end and they had made those first run of trades and it looked like they were going to have to replenish that roster. It's like, man, Sean McVase should get out while they get this good. Go do TV for a couple years. Pick his next place and go ahead and go before he gets blamed for all this rebuilding that has to be done with the Rams.

29:54Nope, they look like they're going to go to a Super Bowl probably not after yesterday. But before the season, a lot of people are picking them to go to the Super Bowl. It just always seems to work out and then they get the player that the rest of the country was begging to get out of Cleveland. And he's out of Cleveland and it's like, can I just have one day? And I got my one day where he sounded like he sounded with the Browns. He sounded like Kevin Stavansky yesterday in the post game. And I'm still, I got another day. He played on Thursday night. I got two more days of my honeymoon with Jared verse. Jared verse is talking tough, talking about winning, talking about being a leader. Like, yeah, that's what this team needs. Let me, Jeff, wait, old Lima would have said, can loser mentality, toiling and someone else's misery for no, I think that as somebody who said and tried to make an argument, the trading miles probably made sense and the return they signed up for, then they returned, they ended up getting like, I had to sit there and have to, I had to be okay with miles having a great season. And I assume, by the way, he's I love what you're saying. This is honest is again, and I assume he's going to still have a really good season. And I still assume that the Rams are going to the playoffs and he's going to be vital to their success when they have the lead in the fourth quarter. With that said, it was fun. Totally 100% right because if you would have been an advocate of the trade, which you were over the last couple of years, advocating trading miles Garrett. If you advocate trading miles Garrett, then you immediately kill your own argument when you're lent, when you're lamenting that he does so well with the Rams. He was always going to get traded to a team that's contender. Oh, he had a no trade clause. No team that is going to be bad was trading for the guy. No team that was going to be probably in the Bronx category was trading for the guy. So you couldn't be an advocate for the trade and then turn right around go, I can't believe we gave up a guy who got five sacks in the opener in Australia or something like that. So yeah, I don't think that he's going to have a bad year. I don't think that he's damaged goods or a lemon. Like we make jokes. I made jokes right to start the show and chanted. We won the trade. I hope we do for this year. I don't mean no ill will towards him. But I think for Browns fan, a lot of Browns fans don't think they're going to do very well this year. I don't need to have some some with some weird karma with the LA Rams. I don't need to deal with that. So yeah, you know what? You don't always have to take the high road. You can get in the gutter every now and then. And if you were happy about last night's performance with the Rams, get in the gutter. That's fine because none of that what they did made any sense. And because they have such a history of with this group of winning, what Lime said, says it's up being true. I had to write it on the internet. Like yeah, you could definitely see them at a pregame in an NFC championship game where Aaron Andrew sits down with Sean McVeigh. And he goes, yeah, we use week one as an experiment. I'll be very surprised if the season ended up in the gutter for the Rams. Even though, you know, we see this in college football. It's a different animal. But teams go over to Europe and they come back and it's not a great year when they start that series in Ireland. And then they come back and it's kind of shaky. Whoever wins or loses.
