4:01in the background. So obviously that wasn't here. They were out in LA went to a Japanese restaurant together. Everybody was there, but Tim Hardaway, Jr. and was in New York and some money from Tecchio who was in Italy at the time. Kind of hard to get to LA from there. Davy on Mitchell, though, has been a lot of ways the ringleader of all this stuff. I heard there may be another mini camp this week to a little further south of us. Aggregated. Aggregated. And then training camp begins on the 20 was the 29th. I guess well, media days of 28th, right? Yes. So media is a 28th. And that is that is going to be in the arena. They have not sent out the memos on that, but we kind of know what's going on. It's always the last Monday of the month, unless they have like a preseason game that's much earlier, which they don't. And then training camp is going to be in Boca. There was a bit of news today. This is somewhat significant. Rob Fodor, who has been the shooting coach with the heat. I feel like he's been on a contract basis at some times. Sometimes he's been part of the organization, but he's been around them a long time.

5:04Tend to see him at training camp. He's moving on to Dallas. He's going to be joining. I guess it was Dusty May. He used to be the coach at FAU. And Michigan. He's joining Dusty's staff in Dallas. So Rob Fodor, this is a loss. Because this is a guy who was attributed with building shooters with the heat. One of them, Duncan Robinson, another one, Max Struse. Of course, they have others who can do that. Wayne Ellington was a pretty good shooter in his day. And he's on the staff. They want to go get Ray Allen. I think he's still a golfer. They can go grab Ray Allen and Clay Thompson could probably help teach some people have a shoot, although not exactly like him. But there's a bit of a loss, obviously, because this is a guy that obviously was valued, was touted while he was with the heat. No longer going to be. But they've got a pretty good pipeline of coaches. They just elevated their video coordinator to Sioux Falls coach. I guess Dan Bessacea is going to come back to the bench, which is that's kind of their pipeline. It's sort of like it's the spout thing. It's like video coordinator to Sioux Falls back to Sioux Falls bench.

6:07And that's how they develop their coaches, just like they develop their players. Anyway, that's what's been going on. But I want to talk about Davey on today because he has been out there. I mean, this entire summer, he said at his exit interview with the media that he was going to do a better job trying to connect with his teammates. And he has absolutely fulfilled that. It's not just him being in his jersey or with the basketball everywhere, whether it's pro league or at other places workouts, et cetera. But I mean, I guess he coined this pain camp, what they just did in Los Angeles. Didn't look like pain camp when they were eating sushi together. But at the, when they were playing basketball together. And he's put all this on his social media. And I mean, it's pretty clear he's embracing the idea of being like starting point guard on a contending team. And I like, there are some people mocking this. And I'm like, I'm not heat fans, but like other fans Alex. And I'm like, isn't this what you want your starting point guard to do? Like, I know it's, I know it's, I know it's, Dan, I get it.

7:09But it doesn't seem like they have a problem with him taking some leadership here. No, and I mean, of course, like, just like in any space, like there's going to be guys who are naturally more, I guess outgoing, you know, just have more of those traits. And I feel like he's not like, I don't know, he's not like somebody that you go to the locker room. And he's speaking 24 seven. And you're going to always hear his voice. But at the same time, he clearly seems to be one of the leaders of the group. Like he seems to be cool with everybody. And just in general, like from, you know, kind of his Instagram captions and just hearing him speak, you know, it just seems like he's excited for the opportunity. He's obviously seen like the best years of his career years so far. Like he's played the best ball of his career in Miami. Obviously a guy who was a former lottery pick. I just feel like he's had such a, you know, he had a little bit of a tumultuous road. Up to this point before he ended up here where like he, you know, like he had some success.

8:12Like people saw what he could do in Sacramento and Toronto as far as what he could do on the defensive side. But he really took a step ever since he ended up here on the offensive side of the floor where like I feel like everybody was like high on the move when it happened when they traded PJ Tucker in that second round pick for him. It's like, oh, look, there you go. You got a 3-in-D guard for not much that this is going to be a player for them. He's been way better than that. Like he as a driver and as a passer. At least from my expectations. He's done a lot more than I expected. He obviously showed that as a college prospect, but you know, guys don't always get to show off certain things that they were able to do in college and he kind of realized that here. And now it's going to be for a team that really matters. Like before they were playing play in ball. They were playing close to 500 ball. Now he's going to be the starting point guard after having seen some of the best years of his career already. Like he's hitting his prime. He's he apparently like, you know, shed it some way. It just feels like he.

9:12Like the stars are aligning for him to really make a name for himself in the league. He's going to be a starter for a contender for the first time. Sorry. You look at the trajectory here and you mentioned it. Sacramento, he was a disappointment. There's no question, but you never know what to make of a guy goes to Sacramento. That's the thing. I mean, we just saw that with Devon Carter. He's not going to be on his third team. They just drafted him on the top 10. It's like Tyrese Hallebert and was succeeded. I know. Sacramento not not guaranteed deal. Tyrese Hallebert was succeeding in in Sacramento, but obviously it's not to the degree that he did after he was traded for a bonus. That deal with Indiana. I think when you look at a guy finding his voice, there's two things are happening. There's a guy who finds his game and then there's a guy who finds his voice. And sometimes these things are related. If Devon had not made the improvements that he's made on the offensive end, I don't think anybody would take him seriously. When he's trying to be a leader, but the fact that he became not just a good defender and we talked about his slippage last year, but I think he'll get back to where he was.

10:18But not just became a good defender. In other words, not just remain a good defender, great defender at times. He has become a passable or better offensive player. And so as a result of that, because that's really where point guards have to establish themselves. That's where people are going to respect you. You get the guys in the right place. Can you make plays when things break down? Are you going to run the offense again? And establish order, all that kind of stuff, make open shots when you have them. He has done those kind of things enough now that his voice carries weight. And so then it's okay, growing into that voice. And people forget he won a championship in Baylor. I mean, he won't he won a title. So that's significant also. This is a guy who has that as pedigree. He said that on the video when he was sort of they were breaking up the huddle in California. He's like we're champions already. He is. He has been at a high level. Wiggins has been. Janice has been. Bam hasn't been, but he's been close twice. Bobby Portis has been Clay Thompson has been several times, right? So they have a group of guys who and their coach and their coach has been and their front office has been. And so when you start to and a lot of their assistants have been.

11:30And so when you start to pull all these kind of things together, you're like, all right, this is a guy whose voice they are going to respect. And I think that's where it starts. I think where you look at where he can get better now. And that's the question. And I. I love Mario choppers, you know that I developed a relationship with Rio. We'd love to have him on the potty's making the pod rounds lately. But Rio said something that I can't it's a real statement, but it's just something I can't go with. He basically said he characterized Davey on his more of a backup point guard, but they need more of a true board guard. And he talked about how he made plays for the team. And I'm not going to dispute that because Mario did make his share of big plays. There's a huge game against Indiana. There were other games in the finals where he stepped up, right. But again, he was more of a complimentary piece to Dwayne LeBron and then Chris, right. And he's acknowledged that much to to a point. But I don't think that Rio was that much more advanced than Davey on Mitchell as an offensive player. Was he?

12:34Is that revisionist? I think it really is just a different different types of players were like, charmers as a shooter. I think clears Davey on, whereas Davey on as a driver. I think it's the other way around. I think Davey on is just quicker getting to the basket and is very efficient. Like he's one of those guys who gets to the paint. And for, you know, for who he is for what he is, the role he plays, he's efficient in that we especially going to his left. He loves that left handed finish. And I just think as a drive driving kick guy, he is more natural in that way. Whereas like charmers was a better shot maker and better shooter, I would say. So like he was probably more complimentary for that squad than I think Davey on would be if you tried to like, yes, even though like you would give them a different dynamic than charmers. But I just think charmers like shooting ability mixed with. Also, also different. Yeah. Also, David was a better on ball defender. Rio was an elite off ball defender. Leo was a Rio was a high steals guy good, good on ball defender.

13:41But not at Davey on level as an on ball defender. I think very few guards have been. Obviously, particularly at that size, but but. Rio's thing was playing the passing lanes. He was always claiming he was going to lead the league and steals. He was a better fit for that team. And I think the reason he was a better fit for that team. And to me, this is the next stage in Davey on's growth is that. Rio would take those open shots every single time like there was never a question of that like real thought he should have gotten more shots. What I always respected about Rio was he didn't push it. Like he didn't push himself. Even though old furl is talking and push himself ahead of Dwayne or LeBron or any of that kind of stuff. He would talk leap to them. But he didn't even push himself ahead of it. But he would take the open ones. Davey on at times has not taken the open one one of their problems in the clutch was that they don't really have he wasn't really someone that anybody had a guard because he hardly shot. If you look at his club his numbers and clutch situations last year. His percentage was fine, but very few shots.

14:44That is going to have to change. Don't you think I think that's the next step for him. Oh yeah, I'm 100% with you. I think like he's one of those guys where he had a lot of shooting questions. You know, as far as like when he when he first traded for him, he was, you know, he didn't have he didn't have a whole lot of success before that. I mean, before he ended up here and I just feel like the percentages have been super solid since he's been here hasn't really been like. Oh, he's had like a month or two where he just can't shoot you haven't really felt that he's been pretty stable. But it's almost like it's a result of what you're talking about. He doesn't take a whole lot of like risky threes, I would say. He really just takes the open ones and yes, I want him to take open ones with, you know, no hesitation. I think he's made some strides there. And I think the real next step for him is really just being more willing to shoot when people go under on the screens. If they're going to reintroduce more screening into into their offense this year and he's running some pick and roll.

15:45That's going to be a huge one. Now, after going back to more of a system that is a lot closer to last year and he's not running a whole lot of ball screen action. Whatever, that's that might not like that would still like to see that, but it might not be quite as important if you're not going to be running a whole lot of ball. If he's just going to be mostly catching and going like he was last season, which he was great in, by the way, so kind of best season NBA. I mean, in his NBA career in that system, then I don't think it's a huge thing. I think his driving is driving and kicking ability mixed with the open threes gives you a lot of value. So, you think if you want to unlock a lot more types of offense, right, and we talked about a whole lot about that with with cool right like there's stuff you can do the shooter stuff you can do with the honest with BAM, even with like Wiggins, Portis, whatever. The Davion one is how much pick and roll are you going to assign right like I think it could be interesting to see him with a guy like the honest role, even though he's he's been an inconsistent screener.

16:45I think since he's not a score first guard, I think there could be some nice chemistry there since he's such a he's a but that that play that way if the drive that plays into the leadership part of this too, because if if you honest, if Davion has earned, he's respect, which is a lot of what this last part of the summer is about. And Davion will be able to tell you honest I need a better screen because we Goren used to do that Goren used to go I had so many conversations about how frustrated he was with the way that Hassan said his screens. It was like he was always facing the wrong direction not paying any attention and Goren would call him out because Goren had the pedigree to call him out on that okay and I'm not saying that Yannis requires that like white side does, but your point guard does need to be able Tim Hardaway senior could call it. Could call anybody out on that team okay and it's like Jay will got to that point where even in that one year with Miami that first year in Miami where he could talk to Dwayne about that stuff obviously GP and Dwayne had their issue in Chicago but Gary Peyton could tell Dwayne or something right because he's Gary F and Peyton now I'm not saying that that Davion Mitchell is that but I think that the respect that's earned from the work that he's put in the commitment to team this summer.

18:05And again going going overseas to work with the honest that's the other part of this so if you're if I'm slow and I'm looking at that I'm gonna like all right I'm gonna get these guys in actions together as many as possible I'm gonna get them comfortable with each other. And and Davion's gonna have the ability if Yannis drifts okay not something we're expecting to do is not that kind of guy but if he does drift then Davion can call him out I think Davion's a point he can call Bam out I think Bam would take it right now you know so I think you need a little of that on the point. I need a little of that on the court and I do think that Davion's added that all right on the other side is we're gonna project Davion's numbers for this year we will do that on the other side. Okay, so let's make a let's make a projection here as we close this out. Davy on Mitchell this season I'm going to look at the numbers from last year. So we're going to play more or less on this sort of like price picks. Okay, so last season. Davy on plates 70 games. We can't project how many is going to play but obviously the heat need him to play that many because there's not a ton of clear depth at that position we've talked about it drew Smith Ryan Conwell trade Donald sin but we don't really know what they're going to get out of two of them and drew does have his limitations. 70 70 minutes 70 games the average 28.6 minutes per game we both expect that to go up correct. Probably I would imagine so or just just around there at the very least but I would I would expect it to go up a little bit. I think so too I I don't think he's going to be pushed past 31 32 most nights but I think that he's going to get two thirds of the games.

22:58All right 49% from the field on seven and a half attempts about the same attempts that he averaged the year before right is hard to gauge percentages do you think his attempts go up 7.6 a game. Oh. That's a tough one. I was going to say that the field goal percentage goes down because I think he's going to take. He's going to take a little more when it comes to three point volume just from the the one that Janis creates at the very least but the field goal attempts honestly I'm going to say I think it stays right about where it was honestly I think he's going to have a similar role as far as you know what they rely on him for as a driver. I think it's going to be a similar amount of shot attempts percentage goes down a little bit for more threes. I can see that last year percentages he shot 56% from two that was up from 54% the year before and he slipped from three from roughly 45% to 40.

24:01I expect the volume of threes to go up a little bit from 3.3 but probably the percentage to go down if you can keep the percentage in the 36 to 37% range I think they're fine. The effective field goal percentage last year 57.4 which takes both those things in account is 59.5 the year before this is a big one. I think this is someplace he's got to improve a little bit. 0.9 free throw attempts per game. Can he get to two? You went a lot of games last year. We didn't have any. I just don't really think of him as a guard that draws a whole lot of contact on his drives. It's mostly getting by a guy and finishing and that's where like that's a part of why he took an offensive lead not just the three point shooting like percentages being nice is he he's been utilized a lot more on ball with the heat as a driver. The attempts have gone up every year like his efficiency as a result like his relative true shooting percentage has gone up with this he's just in the right role now.

25:05And so I. I'm not sure you know I think it's at a point now where he's kind of he kind of is who he is there. I kind of want to just focus on being able to get down hill and either finish or make the right pass. The free throw thing is like it will be nice. Obviously if he averaged more but I don't think that's too big of a focus for him as much as like for example like I would want him to take pull up three. If they go on their on a screen, which I think they probably will a lot of times because you don't want to give up the drive because he's so fast and because he honest is going to be if he's if he's the one screening even if he you know his preference is to slip the screen not really make contact. So I think they're going to be going to be willing to give up to concede that pull up three. And I think that's going to be the show he has to focus on more so than anything with like the free throws. Rebound's 2.7 each of the past two years he's fine in that regard I think that probably stays about the same I the two stats OK, so let's look at these two and you tell me more or less on these two.

26:1210.3 points and 5.3 assist. I'm sorry that was two years ago with Miami. He went 10.3 and 5.3 last year he was 9.3 points 6.5 assists. So let's play off of those two numbers 9.3 points 6.5 assists. I think one of them goes up I think the other one is the same or goes down a little bit. I'm interested to hear which ones because I if I had to say like my my first reaction was maybe the assist harness high. I see we're going to go opposite on this. I don't I'm not sure though like I can kind of see it both ways because he's going to be they're going to rely on him so much because they don't have so like a lot in the way of guard creation. Now they're going to get a whole lot of creation out of their front court that's going to be like the bulk of it comes from non Davy on creation is mostly going to come from the front court and whatever like actions they get the shooters in but

27:12it's so that's why I kind of go back and forth is like yeah they lost a lot of guard play with like hero hot I mean hero power and then of course another creator in hawkets but they replaced it with a guy who has like a whole lot of usage in young is like one of those that he's up there and usage every year. 30 plus so I wonder if he's going to be able to play make quite as much as opposed to I think he's going to get so many easy ones that's the thing I feel like I think I think you're looking at two lobs again where he gets to run. So well so but I'm sorry but but but and I also think the transition stuff now sometimes in transition he won't get credit for the assist I could see sometimes where ball comes off the rim he gets it pushes it the somebody pushes it to you and he's getting the hockey assists there in transition but he's not getting the real assist I could see that I think I think six and a half is about right I could see him exceeding seven and I I mean the turnover number has always been very clean like 1.5 last year so he was 4 to 1 more than 4 to 1 assists the turnover ratio after he's been in 3 to 1 before with Miami 9.3 points I think again is about right I could see it slipping slightly into I think he's in the 8 to 10.

28:27If he's average in 12 points a game that's a good thing I think for them right that that means the 3s are falling that means you're feeling his offensive impact because he doesn't take bad shots. If he's averaging and that's why he has such a great assist at turnover ratio it's not because he's Steve Nash but it's because he he just in general doesn't doesn't make a lot of risky plays. No just trying to make the right play most of the time so if he's averaging 12 like I trust that it's not because he's chucking shit up respect. But I kind of the other factor in all this like predicting the points is the possession game that we've talked about is if we're expecting them to just have the ball more often right if they're getting out of his numbers go up in yeah. Yeah and the 3s also like well and also also the minute the fact that there's no clear backup point guard that is going to get a lot of burn also and that means that he's going to be 30 plus minutes he's cemented there's no OK that suppose going to go to somebody else and that's the other thing look I look again I love real close it here but real was not cemented during the big 3 I mean the first year Spowe was trying to play Carlos Royo I had a whole first half of the season and then he played Mike Bibi ahead of him both of which were mistakes in my game.

29:42Especially in the finals. Rio should have been getting those minutes but you know that was a guy and then Norris you know Norris a lot of games like Norris didn't close a ton of games but he got large stretches of certain games where he was playing well with that. So well then there were the any house. But yeah so but I think that when you look at day down like it's his show like it's not he it's not his show entirely because it's Janice's show but as far as being the still the point guard on this team. There's not really competition we know kind of what Drew's role is going to be and then it's like all right you can well and don't work their way into this at some point when they need something different. But that's what it is and that's one of the reasons that they're not going out and get anybody the biggest thing to me that shows trust is they haven't they haven't gone out to go get a gay Vincent or somebody like that like they are going to allow Dave on Mitchell to take control of this situation. I know that they would have probably prefer to include him then Casperous because of the future and that would look different but they did keep Dave on and now they're going to give Dave on this role he's also in the last year of his contract.

30:44And that is a consideration and I he's somebody they're going to want to keep around and he's going to make as much money as possible so there's going to be this is going to be a big year for him I think. And so I think we're somewhere around that range I think if he's if he's average in 10 points and eight assists they really that's that that's that would be really high level for what they for what they need right now on this team.
