Most people today try to follow trends, but Phil does the opposite. Phil and Ray Romano decided early to not talk about things that would get dated. They didn't mention the current president or the famous actors of that time. If they had, the show might have been popular for a week, but it would feel old today. By avoiding data topics, they traded short-term wins for long-term gains. Phil didn't do a bunch of research to find funny ideas. He just looked at his own life. He wrote about arguments with his wife, disagreements with his parents, trying to get his kids to listen. Because these things happen to everyone, the jokes never stopped being funny.
