4126 You're Not Lost, You're Just Sightseeing
About this episode
Life doesn't come with a map. It twists and turns, throws detours at us, and sometimes drops us in places we never expected. This reality hits even harder when you're raising kids—because now you're not just navigating your own path; you're guiding little explorers through their own confusing journeys. Overwhelm can take over, leaving you with questions: "Am I doing this right? Are we lost?" But the thing is that you're not lost; you're just sightseeing.
When you're sightseeing, you don't panic because you're off-course. You pause. You take in the landscape. You explore surprises.

Life's messiness is actually a part of the journey. It's where growth, understanding, and resilience happen.
In parenting, that means embracing the unpredictable, learning from every twist, and realizing that every "wrong" turn is actually part of a bigger, unfolding adventure.
The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 3:5-6 to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
When you're sightseeing, it's about surrendering control and trusting that the path will become clear. Trust yourself.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Trust yourself!
Here are three things parents can do to help themselves and their children remember this essential truth:
1. Normalize the Struggle — Share Your Story Honestly
Children need to hear that confusion, setbacks, and failures are part of life. When you share your own struggles without shame, you show them it's okay to stumble. As Joel Osteen says, "You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try." Normalizing struggle takes away fear and teaches perseverance.
2. Build "Sight-Seeing" Moments — Create Time to Reflect Together
Set aside moments regularly—whether it's a dinner conversation or a quiet walk—where everyone can talk openly about what's hard, what's surprising, and what's inspiring. Help kids (and yourself) see problems as scenes on the journey, not dead ends.
Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God."
Teaching stillness invites perspective.
3. Anchor in Hope and Purpose — Find Your Family's North Star
Create rituals, mantras, or family verses that remind everyone you're not lost; you're learning and growing. Something simple like, "We keep moving forward, together," or a shared scripture like:
Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
This can serve as a compass in stormy seasons.
Parenting is chaotic, confusing, and sometimes frustrating. But when you reframe your experience as sightseeing rather than getting lost, the fog clears, and you can see where you are. You see the bumps and turns as part of the terrain, not as obstacles to quit over.
So when life feels complicated, remember: you're not lost. You're sightseeing. You're learning. You're growing. Keep moving forward, knowing every step matters.
