Zechariah 09: The King is Coming Home

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon today, Zachariah chapter nine, and today's title is The King is Coming Home. The King is coming home. It's kind of the same idea as yesterday, only it's going to take it even further and just celebrate the return of the King. It's going to be awesome. I can't wait to dive into it. Well, I love this idea of the King coming on home because that's what he has been calling on them to do throughout this entire book. Is it, man, it is time to come home. It is time to come back to make, to rebuild the temple as a spiritual kind of recentering of the nation. And it's just, it's just time to come home. And I love that that he is letting them know it's not just on them, but he is coming back to them. And so we're going to dive right into this and we're going to start with how he is going to be showing judgment toward these hostile nations. And then he's going to talk about the coming home of the King. And if you're ready, here we go, Zechariah 9, verse 1 says this. This is the message from the Lord against the land of a romp and the city of Damascus.

2:01For the eyes of humanity, including all the tribes of Israel, are on the Lord, doom a certain for Hamath near Damascus. And for the cities of Tyre and Sidon, though they are so clever, Tyre has built a strong fortress and has made silver and gold as plentiful as the dust in the streets. And now the Lord will strip away Tyre's possessions and hurl it, its fortifications into the sea. And it will be burned to the ground. The city of Ashkelon will see Tyre fall and will be filled with fear. Gaza will shake with terror. As will Ekran for their hopes will be dashed. Gaza's king will be killed. Ashkelon will be deserted. Corners will occupy the city of Ashkelon. I will destroy the pride of the Philistines. I will grab the bloody meat from their mouths and snatch the detestable sacrifices from their teeth. That's gross. Then the surviving Philistines will worship our God and become like a clan of Judah.

3:05The Philistines of Ekran will join my people as the ancient Jebusites once did. And I will guard my temple and protect it from evading armies. And I am watching closely to ensure that no more foreign oppressors overrun my people's land. Here we go. Verse 9. Rejoice O people of Zion, shout and triumph of people of Jerusalem. Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet humble, riding on a donkey, riding on a donkey's cult. Now pause. It comes from that is fulfilled when Jesus has what is called a triumphant entry. When he walks, or excuse me, he rides in on the full of a donkey into the city of Jerusalem, the weak of his crucifixion. So that is fulfilled in the New Testament by Jesus. Verse 10. I will remove the battle chariots from Israel and the war horses from Jerusalem. I will destroy all the weapons used in battle, and your king will bring peace to the nations.

4:10His realm will stretch from sea to sea, from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. But of the covenant I made with you, sealed with blood, I will free your prisoners from the death and the waterless dungeon. Come back to the place of safety, all you prisoners who still have hope. I promise this very day that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles. Judah is my bow, Israel is my arrow, Jerusalem is my sword, and like an army, I will brandish it against the Greeks. The Lord will appear above his people, his arrows will fly like lightning. The sovereign Lord will sound a ram's horn and attack like a whirlwind from the south southern desert. The Lord of Heaven's armies will protect his people, and they will defeat their enemies by hurling great stones. They will shout, in battle as though drunk with wine, they will be filled with blood like a bowl, drenched with blood like the corners of the altar, and on that day the Lord their

5:14God will rescue his people, just as a shepherd rescues his sheep. They will sparkle in the land, like jewels in a crown. How beautiful, how wonderful, and beautiful they will be. The young man will thrive on abundant grain, and the young women will flourish on new wine. In other words, nobody is going to bully them anymore. No more. Will they be the ones that are getting picked on, but they are going to finally receive their turn at justice? Why? Because that is home, because the king has come home. You know what reminds me of, is one time I needed to take a trip with a friend of mine, and we decided we were going to meet at his house, and from there he and I were going to carpool, he was going to drive, and then we come back and I go home. When we got back, my friends, wife and children were outside, and they were playing and all that. As soon as I got out, his kids got so excited. They were so excited to see me, and they were just waving, and they were just so excited

6:17and all this, and I was like, man, they don't know me really that well, and they're really excited to see me. And then all of a sudden, I realized, wait a minute, they're not here to see me. They're excited to see me, because right behind me was my friend, and he was just a waving, and there's like that embarrassed moment at first where, you know, it's like, oh, but then it was like, this is the sweetest thing ever. Like they saw him this morning, but that's like he's been on like a week-long trip, and it was the sweetest thing ever, that they were so excited to see their daddy, that they didn't even see me. I was in the way, right? And I think that sometimes, that is why God puts things like this in His work for us. It's because in this life, we will have trouble. In this life, there will be difficulty, but we can get so excited at a vision of who God is. And to see that, in the time of Zachariah, God was saying, I'm going to take care of you, and He does. I'm going to do amazing things that the bullied will be able to stand up for themselves, because I'm going to give them strength.

7:17And when we see God do that, and we see that only was He doing that, but He was also making a prophecy about Himself in the future. And when we get such a vision of who God is, and that the king is coming home, that sometimes the things that we go through, man, they're not even there, they're in the way, but we don't even see them, because we have such a vision of who God is. And so I'm going to ask you this question today. I don't know what may be going on in your life, and what you may have going on, and I'm sure it's difficult, and it's hard, and I'm not in any way trying to minimize your problems or what you're going through, I'm just trying to maximize our vision of God. What would your problems look like if you doubled your idea of who God was? To realize He is not just a king, He is the king of kings. And then when the king comes home, when the king is made Lord of our life, when we remind ourselves that He is in control, what would that do to all the problems that you face today, would make them a little bit lighter, would make them a little bit smaller to

8:17realize that the king is in control, that doesn't mean we're not going to have problems. You notice how they're still going to have to fight these enemies? It's just they're going to win all of it like for us. If we knew, we're still going to have to fight some enemies today by God's grace, we're going to win. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are so amazing. You are above all. You are doing more. And though we just rest in the promise of who you are, I pray today, God, that you will help us to get such a vision of who you are, that it will make everything else seem small in comparison. But the king is coming to us. I'm thankful for you today. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. And what God's Word says is Zachariah 1 verse 3 says, return to me and I will return to you. I love you.
