Psalm 59: What To Do In A Crisis

Well over body, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with our host Pastor Brandon today, Psalm chapter 59 and today's title is What to do in a crisis? What to do in a crisis? Now I don't know if you've been with us over the past 58 days, but if you've noticed, there's a lot of Psalms that really deal with this idea of being overwhelmed, dealing with crisis situations, being just really just too much, too much to be able to deal with. And this is going to be one of those, what do you do when you're in the middle of a crisis? I don't mean necessarily when you're in a season of crisis, but I'm talking about it's

1:03happening. I mean they have called you, you're on the way to hospital, like bad things are happening. What do you do in that moment? And my hope is, is that you've never had one of these moments and my hope is that you'll never have one of these moments. 2:08everything in between. And today is one of those that man, it really hits home that there was a moment in my life when I had gotten a phone call. And I love one that I knew he had called me and he said, Hey, I need help. I think I just found my spouse. I think she's passed away. And this love one of mine was 45 minutes away. Well, I immediately get in the car and I start heading that way and I have no idea how to pray. I don't know for sure if this young lady has passed away. I don't know what exactly is going on. Do I need to pray for resurrection? You know what I'm saying? I don't know what to pray. So I just spent that entire 45 minutes on the road driving entirely too fast just saying God, I don't even know how to pray. I just pray Lord for you to do it. Only you can do. I didn't even know what to say. If you ever been like that, where you're in the heat of the moment and you just have no idea, well, that is exactly what this when this song was written was when David is thinking back on a moment like that of absolute crisis.

3:08The story was, is David was anointed king while Saul was king. So for a little while, he hid that from Saul so that he wouldn't immediately be sought after because if there's one thing a king doesn't want, it's a rival to his kingdom. And so when Saul eventually finds out that David is his rival, he sends soldiers in the middle of the night to try to kill David in his own house. The only reason why he was able to lead to live other than of course, you know, God orchestrating so was that his wife, Saul's daughter lied and said, Hey, he's not actually in here and that bought him a little bit of time so he could get away. Well, he goes from having everything to having nothing to running for his life from someone who is probably like a mentor and like an extended father to him, the king. And he is just in this crisis. Imagine someone that you loved and you looked up to and was like a second father to you and you find out they're doing everything they can to hunt you down and kill you.

4:12You just would be so confused. I mean, you don't even have time to be mad. You're terrified. Well, that is exactly what's going on in the moment and David is crying out to God and asking God for help. So here we go. What do we do in the moment of crisis? How do we go to God? Here we go. Psalm 59 verse one. The first thing he says is, rescue me from my enemies. Oh God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. Rescue me from these criminals. Save me from these murderers. They have said an ambush for me. Fears enemies are there waiting, O Lord, though I have not sinned or offended them. I have done nothing wrong yet they are preparing to attack me. Wake up. See what is happening and help me. Oh Lord God of heaven's armies, the God of Israel. Wake up and punish those hostile nations. Oh no mercy to the wicked traders, interlude, which means let the man play. And so in my mind, David, as he is running down the street, he is saying this, and this is not how this goes.

5:13This would have been written after the fact when he's thinking about the crisis of the moment, but he's helping, you know, he's helping all of us, inspired the Holy Spirit to get back into that moment, running down the street, terrified, not knowing what to do. Something to do is cry out to God, not just for help, but for rescue. The difference between helping rescue is help is when you have in trouble paying you bills. Rescue is when you are drowning. Like you need help now. And he's what he's saying, God, I need help. Not next week, right now, verse six, they come out at night snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl in the street, listen to the filth that comes from their mouths. Their words cut like swords. After all, who can hear us, they sneer? But Lord, you laugh at them. You scoff at the hostile nations. You are my strength, and I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, or my fortress. And as I'm failing love, my God will stand with me.

6:14He will let me look down and triumph over all my enemies. Don't kill them. For my people soon forget such lessons. Stagger them with your power and bring them to their knees. O Lord, our shield. Because of their sinful, of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies. Don't destroy them in your anger or destroy them in your anger. Wipe them out completely. Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel, interlude, which means at the ban play. So in other words, he takes a moment and he says, God rescue me and help me. And then he says, but I'm going to trust you to take care of these guys. I'm going to make sure I put you in charge of this vengeance. Verse 14, then he says, my enemies come out at night snarling like vicious dogs. They prowl as they prowl in the streets. They scavenge for food, but go to sleep unsatisfied. But as for me, I will sing about your power each morning.

7:16I will sing with joy about your unfailing love for you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. Oh, my strength to you, icing praises for you, oh God, are my refuge. The God who shows me unfailing love. I love this because this is in the moment. I mean, David is talking about these men who have come at night to try to kill him. And so he's pointing a finger straight at the problem and he's saying, God, I need you to help me right there is what I need you to help me with. And I'm going to do my part, but I'm going to trust you to do your part. And can I tell you that night I was telling you about when I was driving to go see my friend who had had that horrible loss that happened in his life, that's really what I got to in the end was God. I don't even know how to pray. All I know is I'm praying for you to have your way. I don't have a clue what to do. I don't have a clue. Which way to go. I just have to trust in you to do what only you can do.

8:17And if you ever been in that moment in that crisis, you know exactly how that feels. You feel so helpless. You feel like I don't even know which way to go. They say that we have fight, fight, fun, or another word came between it is freeze, fight, flight, freeze or fun. You know, whenever you have this moment that happens and if you've ever been there, I don't know about you, but when I've experienced a true crisis, I go through like all four. Like I got a moment when I'm ready to fight somebody and then then I'm ready to flee. And then I'm freezing trying to fear what's going on. And then I'm falling like, okay, you know, it is just all that is going on. But at some point, we have to center ourselves and remember I'm not in control of this situation anyway. But the Lord is. And so I'm going to pray and talk to the one who can do something about it. Now I've still got to be present in the moment. I've seen that before. Sometimes people get so inside their own head that they can't even help themselves because they don't know. And so that's where we have to be careful to be present in the moment, but also remember who's in charge of that moment. And trust in him, David is talking about how everything was going wrong.

9:20He doesn't have any idea why these people even after him, but he chooses to bring it to God. Be honest about what's going on and trust the Lord to do it only he can do. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you see and that you know and that you are never, never upset with us when we come to you in honesty. You call on us to tell you what we need. Lord, in the darkest, most difficult moments, your word says that even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will not be afraid because you are close beside us. I'm thankful that you are our strength and you are our refuge in Jesus. Name me. Pray, amen. And what God's word says in Psalm 34 verse 1, He says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 16.
