Will Americans govern themselves or be ruled?

The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history. Whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite. These words of Thomas Jefferson have never been true. Hello there everyday Americans, Paul Engel here with the Constitution study where we read, instead of the Constitution, teacher action generation we feel glad you could join me today. I do enjoy collecting quotes, it's something I've picked up, well actually fairly recently in my life since I was starting writing articles and doing the radio program and all this.

1:06I find these quotes very helpful. I mean I've always had some but I've really started collecting more and more of them lately and well this one, it's the latest edition and it really caught my attention. Again, it's attributed to Thomas Jefferson but it makes a very interesting point. See in order to govern ourselves, not to have self-government, we must govern ourselves. It's kind of the definition, you tell us self-government doesn't just mean going and voting. It means I will govern myself so others don't have to. Because if I don't govern myself and you don't govern yourself, well then we must be governed by somebody and that somebody is always a small, quote unquote, league group of individuals who are sure to the core of their being that they know better than absolutely everybody else. And ladies and gentlemen, this is the fundamental question of our time. It's fundamental to this sudden traction, the democratic socialists of America have the sudden, that was not a sudden idea, it's been around for generations.

2:18But the fact that it's getting more tractionally, it really comes down to, do we govern ourselves or do we let a small elite govern us? It's not a new idea, ladies and gentlemen, it's been around basically all of mankind. You go back to the kings and queens of Europe. You weren't allowed to govern yourself, you need to be governed by somebody who has chosen specially by God. When we came to this country, we started this country, when we declared our independence, we said no, no, it's the people that have power. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they're down by their creator with certain unalienable rights. And it was in that that we came to the conclusion, no, we can self-govern, we can choose people to represent us, but they're not as an elite. We actually set up two different houses of legislation, legislators, one representing the average everyday person, the other representing the states, one meant to be populated by the average everyday people, they would serve a couple years and then go home, one with the more professional politician representing the states, they'd be around for longer.

3:29But as we look at the sudden traction of vows, socialists are getting from Mayor Mondami in New York City to, well, even the latest primary results, where members of the Democratic Socialist Party have been winning primaries in the Democratic Party all over. And of course, everyone's going to see it's the Democratic Socialism, Socialism won't save us. Socialism sounds like it's, well, it sounds like a social disease to me, but it sounds like the idea of the people decide no. Socialism never works that way, Socialism works by having a small group of elite that decide for us. So we have to decide individually for ourselves and then collectively for the, for others, as we get together as cities and states and a nation, do we want self-government? Would it be one we governed by an elite?

4:30Because those choices each have trade-offs, which means it really comes down to priorities. You think about a centralized government, an authoritarian government, can be extremely efficient, right? They're not arguing, they're not debating the fewer people in charge, the fewer arguments in debates you have about which way to go. That's why you look at something like, well, communist China. Now, about 20 years ago, both California and communist China said, you know what, we're going to create high-speed rail systems. Now, in those nearly 20 years, you have California, which has laid, how many miles of track? I don't think they have any high-speed rail track open. In fact, they're still begging for more money. They said they need another 9.5 billion dollars just to lay to finish a single segment.

5:30Now, compare that to communist China. The China, at the end of 2025, laid roughly 31,000 miles of track, enough to circle the United States three times. So you look at that and say, well, see, this centralization is efficient. It gets things done quickly and you're right. It decreases debate. It decreases confrontation. It doesn't, well, let me rephrase that. It decreases public debate. You see, you still have people who disagree. They're just not allowed to do so publicly if they wish to keep breathing. That's how these things work, which means it's a trade-off. The freedom to think and express your ideas, to pursue your own happiness versus the efficiency of getting things done quickly. Now, the American people in general used to be proud of governing themselves.

6:35We have sayings like pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. We used to have sayings, you know, we used to have the idea of taking charity was a stain on your, especially on a man's reputation. He was expected to provide for his family. And if he needed help, well, that means he was an adequate and that was a stain. Now, he has to say, no, don't take care of yourself. The government will take care of you. We'll pay for your, your, your home, your rental. We'll give you discount of rent. We'll pay for that. We'll give you free bus fare. We'll give you discounted food. Of course, every time they've tried that, it's been an abject disaster. It's also led to the death of hundreds of millions of people. But don't worry about it. We'll get it right this time. Because a smaller lead just no better than everybody else, even though every time it's been tried, it's been an abject failure. Even if China can build more track, look at what it does to their people.

7:38So that's, that's the, that's the case. Why are we seeing such an increase in the acceptance and promotion of socialism? I believe there are several reasons. I believe one reason is our education system. It works in a socialist mentality. It doesn't matter how good you are, you age out, you go to the next grade. We don't encourage people to do better. We slow them down to so that people don't fall behind. We take away every, every, every, every benefit of excellence so that people don't feel bad. That's part of it. I think part of it is, you know, we've moved more and more from rural America into urban America. Let's face it, urban America is much more dependent on government services. When you, when I lived in, in New York City, right, the, the garbage was picked up by the city. The electricity was, was, was regulated by the city. The water was regulated by the city.

8:40The government previously provide you paid them for it, but they, they provided everything. Now where I live, guess what? I go to the, to the convenience station to drop off my garbage. I have a well that provides my own water. Yeah, I buy electricity from a community, from a co-op, not from a government entity. And not dependent on government. In fact, when, when the government put a water line up my road, they ask Paul, do you want us to bring in county water? And I said, no, I don't want your water. I'll take care of my own water. It's a different mentality. I also think that the, it's just been promoted. The, the, the, the socialist ideas, they promote all the good and they ignore all the bad. Right, they, they, they talk about, you know, free healthcare and free education and, and free food and, and universal basically, they talk about all that. They never talk about what you have to give up in order to get that. And I think that's a large part of the problem. I, not everybody agrees with me.

9:41I saw this interesting article, uh, by a John Daniel Davidson. It was in the federalist. And he noticed something very interesting who's looking at the, the Democratic primary, uh, for Michigan Senate seat. Uh, this is the one that was, uh, uh, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, famously won by Abdul Asayet, the, uh, Democratic socialist, who claims that to be a socialist. But, hmm. What he found was that among according to the exit polls, among non-arir primary voters, the vote was split almost evenly between L.C.I.E. and Stevens, 47.9% for L.C.I.A.D., 8.48.2% for Stevens. He then noted among Arab voters, 94% of the voted for L.C.I.D. This brings an interesting question, because remember New York City, Mayor Mondami, is not only a socialist, he's an Islamist. So again, I'm not sure that I don't quite know how far I want to take that.

10:46Is it the tribalism that is so much a part of different cultures? You know, hey, I vote for a person I tribe. I vote for a till of the haun. If he was on my team, kind of scenario, I'm not entirely sure. But to me, it brings up an interesting question about one of the other drivers of socialism, the number of immigrants that have come to this country from socialist countries that out of habit are dragging some of their ideas with them. This possibly, it's funny, I've seen this before in other scenarios where people who, you know, when I lived in upstate New York, people from New York City would come up and buy you weekend homes and summer homes to get away from the city. And then they'd work in local politics trying to bring everything that made the city evil to the place they tried to get away from. It never makes it. We call them citiates. It's the people who tried to escape from the city and then turn the new place into

11:49exactly what they escaped from. It's a phenomenon that happens. I'm wondering, is that part of it? But it really comes down to this, we had a very basic question. Well, we govern ourselves or we'd be governed by others. Now, remember, the United States is not democracy, we're a republic, which means we hire people to represent us because there are things that we need to do collectively, not individually, right? I can govern myself in the way I speak and providing my help, my food and shelter, and I can do that. But there are certain things we need to do, communally, right? I'm not building the roads. I'm not setting, preventing zoning in completely, there are things we need to collectively. And in this country, we decided we're going to use a republican form of government. We're going to hire people to represent us in the exercise of our authority. But it seems more and more, we just simply hand over the power and pretend they aren't

12:52our servants. But the other part of that is it makes this election process an attractive target for people who want to manipulate the system. For example, I've talked before about New Jersey's problem with tens of thousands of non-citizens registered to vote. Even though under the New Jersey Constitution, you must be a U.S. citizen in order to vote, there were tens of thousands of people on the voter rolls. They were going to vote who were not U.S. citizens. Again, it's human nature, right? It's an opportunity to manipulate the system and people were willing to take advantage of that. Now, they've been identified and well, now the governor, Cheryl, said, well, they plan to work with the Department of Justice on fixing their voter rolls. They finally, they're finally, of course, they didn't do it until they were caught, until

13:52the federal government came in and started threatening them. Is that the elite you want governing the state? That's the interesting part, right? Because we're hiring people to exercise this power. But are we treating them as a governing elite and are we holding them accountable to us, the people, the true sovereigns in this country, the people collectively are the sovereign of this nation. Not the president, not Congress, not the Supreme Court, not our states, not our cities, not our counties, we the people. And yet we seem to simply hand over our power and say, you go to it, you know better, your experts, you're the elite, we don't need, we don't want to be bothered with the actual job of governing ourselves. And look at the nation around us and ask yourself, where's that God in us? Some things has gotten our better, right? We got rid of not only slavery, but racism by collectively, by having groups of people

14:59put in laws that made it illegal. But it didn't really, racism didn't really change until the American people's heart changed. So we need to decide, are we going to govern ourselves or are we going to be governed by a small elite that believe they know better than everybody else and what you think and what's important to you and your family doesn't really matter because the elites say you need to do this. Whether that's a shot in the arm or a, you know, who gets to, who gets to vote, who gets to come into this country or who decides whether or not you can take a certain treatment for whatever disease you happen to have. The problem with the letting elite leaders is that is the antithesis of liberty. It's the exact opposite. Yet it seems so many people are willing to give up their freedom to not be bothered with

21:10If we don't govern ourselves, we'd be governed by a small elite that won't think they know better than everybody else. Part of the governing ourselves means what governing those who we hire to be our public servants, to represent us, to execute our powers in our name. That requires us to pay attention to things. For example, in Michigan, they apparently elect their Supreme Court justice. Now that's nothing wrong with that. I don't have a problem with the justices being accountable directly to the people for elections. I know a lot of people think that's a bad idea. I like the idea of being able to remove judges, including Supreme Court justices at the state level. I understand why the founding fathers didn't do it for the federal government, but that's another discussion. The reason I bring this up is that it appears that two campaigns for Supreme Court justices

22:16were funded in large, they got a lot of money from a political action committee dedicated to getting rid of the fossil fuel industry. Now again, okay, that's your opinion. You can express your opinion through supporting whoever you want, but those justices just made a decision against a major oil pipeline project. So roughly six weeks before Chief Justice Megan Kavanaugh and Justice Noah Hood voted in a six to one decision to basically vacate the approval of this pipeline. Again, they got a significant amount of money from the Jane Fonda climate pack. They each received $5,000 from Jane pack. This is according to their campaign finance records. Now regardless of where you sit on the use of fossil fuels, guess what?

23:16Our entire economy is based on fossil fuels. You get rid of fossil fuels. Our economy stops dead and it's not just the fueling the gas in your car or the diesel and the truck or the natural gas that's used in the power generation plants. It's the plastic in your cell phone. It's the plastic in the medical devices. It's the plastic they used to sterilize and seal your medications. All that plastic, almost all of it is made out of fossil fuels. Okay, but here's the question. Were those two justices? Were there votes bought by these donations? Again, an interesting question. Now does that mean that the fossil fuel, those opposed to fossil fuels shouldn't be allowed to finance campaigns? I don't think so. I think that's a violation of their rights. What we have here is a revealing of records that may bring into question the neutrality of

24:20these two justices when it comes to questions of fossil fuels. Now also, this is a six to one decision. That means even if these two justices voted the other way, you're still dealing with a four to three. The decision still would have, the approval still would have been vacated. It's not like they'd change anything. But again, now people in Michigan, maybe they should look at this and say, hey, did these two justices where they're votes manipulated by this pack, where there are other justices whose votes may have been manipulated by a pack? Maybe it's something that we, again, we the people, we need to pay attention. Not just to the names of who we vote for, not just the political parties of who we vote for, but to the character of the people we vote for. It's why I talked about here in my county elections. I made a point of sitting down with every candidate that was willing to sit down.

25:21And by the way, I only voted for candidates that were willing to sit down with me. We had some very interesting conversations. I got some insight of what their concerns were. To me, it was very helpful in deciding who to vote for. And not one of them was based on political party. It was based on their character and their ability, their, their demonstrated ability to, to do the job. Because again, if it's not, if we don't go over ourselves, within a small need like to take over it. And all this happens quite frequently at the federal level. How many of you have heard of the, the federal insurance office, the FIO? This entity, which I don't know if it was created by the Dodd-Frank Act or, or was simply, kind of given more power through the Dodd-Frank Act, remember the Dodd-Frank Act. That's the, the, the Wall Street craziness after the 2008 financial crisis, which in large part was created by the federal government.

26:22And then they decided to fix it by regulating even more. Yeah. Yeah. That, that disaster. One of the things it did was bring this, this federal insurance office giving it powered oversee the insurance, to regulate the insurance companies. Of course, there's nothing in the Constitution about the United States, the federal government, actually regulating insurance. They can regulate interstate commerce. They have no power to regulate insurance, but that has not stopped Congress from doing any, the Constitution hasn't stopped Congress from doing anything. They keep doing it because they're often not held accountable. They're not held accountable by the courts who continue to support their illegal unconstitutional actions. And they're not supported by, or not opposed by the American people who hold their representatives accountable for voting for these illegal unconstitutional power graphs. These attempt to move regulation into this small elite group in Washington, DC.

27:23Well, a group of senators, a center of blackburn of Tennessee, crews of Texas and Lee of Utah have introduced the federal insurance office abolishment act. Now, they claim it's going to eliminate this federal insurance office. What they're really talking about doing is taking some of those powers and distributing them. Right. So, you know, some of the powers are going to end up in the, the treasury secretary, others with the Federal Reserve Board, but their goal is to get the federal government out of regulating insurance and returning that to the states. At least that's according to Marsha Blackburn, one of the, the sponsors of this legislation. Now, again, in general, I'm thrilled with the idea of cutting federal retake, getting the federal government out of things, especially things. They're not legally authorized to be involved in, including, by the way, regulating insurance, the whole affordable, unaffordable care act, all that nonsense.

28:26So I haven't gotten into the details of this legislation. Of course, the devil's in the details, right? The details are really, really important. So until I've had a chance to really get into it, but it sounds good, right? A center of blackburn says, insurance regulation is long been and should remain a responsibility of the states. The Federal Insurance Office of Bollinger Act would eliminate unnecessary federal overreach, cut red tape, and return power to the states. Sounds good. Senator Cruz said the FIO is a redundant, ever-expanding, unaccountable entity that infringes upon state's authority to regulate the insurance and industry. He also added that the legislature will reinembrate a critical overreach by the federal government and empower state regulators to focus on what is best for the consumers in their state. And Senator Lee, very simple. The FIO does not need to exist. It's an Obama-era expansion of the federal bureaucracy created to intrude on states rights. So this sounds good. It, again, I want to see the details, but it sounds good.

29:29But again, think of it this way. We, the people created the states. The states created the federal government. We did it through the states. So if you talk about compressing power, a governing move to a, a, an elite, a small elite group, that's pretty much what happens when the federal government takes power that it's not authorized to exercise under the Constitution and assumes that power, that regulatory power, like insurance, like energy, like transportation, like so many more. And what I found interesting is over the decades, this move towards more centralized, more elite regulation has been pretty much nonstop. That has been the direction of history. And we're starting to see small examples of this being relaxed, very small, right? You had the DOBS decision at the Supreme Court that said the federal government could not, could not regulate abortion, right? They couldn't protect abortion.

30:29It's a state issue. You have this legislation. We'll see where this goes that talks about returning power to the states. It's more and more about returning the states. Why is this important? Because if we're talking about self-government, I have much more influence over a state legislator than I do over a federal one. I have much more influence over a state bureaucrat than I do over a federal one. For example, I can reach out to my state representative in my state senator, and I will generally get an answer. I can email them and I will generally get an answer back. I can't tell you how many times I've reached out to my US representative in my US senators. And if I get anything back, it's a form letter that basically says we got your message. We'll tell the person and good luck and have a nice day. Not exactly what I'm looking for. So I like this. If we're going to govern ourselves, then we need as much power as close to us as possible.

31:30Because that's where we, the people have the most influence. It's where we exercise the most power. And there's another perfect example. I mentioned the transportation or the part of transportation. There's a recent announcement that the DOT and other federal agencies are looking to revoke the licenses of 270 commercial drivers license schools after thousands of their drivers allegedly failed English proficiency tests. Now again, licensing drivers is not a power delegated to the United States. Even commercial drivers licenses, right? Because only interstate Congress only can regulate interstate travel. Meaning at best, Congress can say you need a CDL. If you're going to to drive a commercial vehicle interstate or across the Canada or Mexico border, right? It's foreign to Congress. That's as close as Congress could possibly get. But again, most people don't pay attention to this.

32:31They say, well, Congress said, you know, the federal law, you have to do this. Not do I think the commercial drivers licenses are important? Yes, I do. Do I think being able to read and comprehend English is important for any driver, not just commercial, any driver. Yeah, I think it is. If you're going to drive in the United States, you need to be able to read the street signs. And if you can't read the signs, then that makes you a less safe driver, whether it's commercial or otherwise. But again, when the states stopped regulating themselves, they said, well, look at the federal government doing it. All they're doing is moving regulation, moving governance into a smaller and smaller and smaller elite. And a lot of times there's some efficiency, right? Because now the entire country says you have to yield to understand to comprehend English in order to get a commercial drivers license. But that's also the single failure point. Because if they don't enforce it, then just schools around the nation don't enforce it.

33:37There's a two edge story to this. There's there's a there may be a benefit. There's also a cost. There's a cost in the states looking going, you know, hey, maybe we're in a state where we don't need you know, we're we're understanding English is not our primary concern. We have other concerns. Well, you can't do anything about it because the federal government has decided they know best how to regulate commercial drivers licenses, even though that's not a power delegate to them. We literally give up our freedom to let this elite govern us. And we always do it because what we're promised things will be better. The promise they'll protect us. And even when they fail, we keep doing it over and over and over again like Charlie Brown kick in the football. Even when the feds fail us, we keep going back and trying and trying again. Okay, I have another break I have to take before I do that though. I want to remind you, you know, who do you do business with? We talk about governing ourselves. A part of governing ourselves is paying attention to who we do business with.

34:41I've used several examples of their companies. They're companies. I don't do business with anymore. I found out that they were taken their profits and supporting organizations that were well, destroying my rights. So I stopped doing business with them. We're talking about governing ourselves, or we're governed by a small elite. And the problem with that is a lot of problems. The one I want to look at now is people get things wrong. Now if we're governing ourselves and you get something wrong, it impacts you and maybe your family. However, you have people claim to be able to tell other people how to live and they get things wrong, they make a mess. Perfect example. Net zero. I mean, for decades, I've been telling us, we're going to be able to be dead in a few years, since we were supposed to all be dead by 2000 and 2010 and 2020 and we'd still haven't died. But that still hasn't prevented these politicians, both in America and a lot of in Europe, from pushing this net zero myth. As if somehow we can prevent putting out carbon.

41:53In other words, we can prevent putting out plant food. Carbon dioxide is plant food. But again, these people, they're smarter than you are. They know better. So we need to have this plant food. We need to get rid of all the plant food so that we don't all die, even though we've never died when you said we're going to die. Well, now we find out that it's even worse than that. And in this case, Europe has really paying the price. Spain spent billions of dollars to create a solar power grid. And both Germany and Spain claim to get most of their power from renewables. There's just a couple of little problems. First of all, electricity prices in Europe, they kept rising. It kept going up and up and guess what? The Spain's electrical power, they're green power grid. Well, it went down for about 16 hours. That was pretty bad.

42:55Now, what was causing so much of this? Well, this is thing called weather. And in the summer, things tend to get hot. And human beings, we have a hard time dealing with hot. You can always put on more clothes and it gets cold, but it takes a lot to get hot, to get deal with being hot. This thing we generally call air conditioning. In the US, we got lots of air conditioning. In fact, I live in Tennessee now, and live in the South. And it gets really hot in the summer. And I thank God every day for air conditioning. However, in Europe, they don't have so much of that. Not only do they not have the air conditioning in their buildings, they apparently don't have the power grid to run the air conditioning, even if they did. Meaning during the recent high temperatures in Europe, where it is reported 10,000 excessive deaths in June. It was on the news. People were dying and and they couldn't cool off. It was it was all the news. Now, could does that, is that because of

44:02Nazareth? Well, in part, because Spain spent billions of dollars investing in solar power, not power that works at night when it rains with the cloud covers. Yes, they invented they invested something that's only partially there. Now, again, there are a lot of countries that are investing in in South. Now, again, that's extreme heat. There's all extreme cold. I used to live in upstate New York. It gets cold in the winter. And we had to heat the house. We heated with fuel oil. And would both of which produce carbon dioxide, which people said, Oh my God, you're going to kill the planet. Now, I'm going to keep myself alive. And I'm going to feed the plants. Because remember, carbon dioxide is plant food. So I have to wonder how many people in Europe, how many of those 10,000 would not have died if their ruling governments didn't say, you know what? Let's forget all this this fossil fuel that actually works. Let's let's let's

45:04not actually find something that works better than fossil fuel. Let's use this technology that only works part of the time and invest in that. Maybe if they hadn't made, if they hadn't been governed by an elite few fewer people would I don't know that that's the case. But maybe the point is if people make a mistake, you know, if you want to invest, if you want to build your home net zero, if you don't want to carbon, be my guest. If it's hot in the summer, deal with it. If it's cold in the winter, you have to deal with it. You when we govern ourselves, the impact is limited to you. When there's an elite that governs, they tend to have an impact on everybody. And one of the impacts we've been seeing lately has to do with this question of privacy in these automatic license plate readers specifically, flock safety cameras. Now again, these have gotten a lot of attention. A lot of people are concerned about, well, privacy, except you have no privacy in public. There's no

46:10expectation of privacy. Whatever you do in public can be seen. If it can be seen, it can be recorded. And I've talked a lot about my issues with the search parameters, accessing the data, all that stuff, there's a lot of things can be concerned of. Governor DeSantis, Governor Florida, has ordered that all flock cameras be removed from his from the state highway system. By the way, that includes I 10 and I 75. Now again, this comes from the misuse of these license plate readers, the numerous instances of law enforcement, finding that they're using it to track and stock family members, love interests, the unwillingness to verify the data to assume that just because flock says something is true, not double check. Again, the issues I've talked about here multiple times before. And it's not just DeSantis, sheriffs in multiple counties have announced they're ending

47:16their licenses with their with the flock and their license plate readers. And again, I'm I on the one hand, I understand the law enforcement tool. It can be a very powerful law enforcement tool in certain scenarios. But the problem we run into is again, this small elite group that has access and abuses their power that we all have to suffer. You know, again, I'm not a huge fan of automatic license plate readers. I understand their scenarios where they are very helpful. The example I use, you know, if there's a a report of a child kidnapped and you have a license plate or a partial license plate, being able to find that all of this, I understand the the the urge for that. But again, there's been a backlash because of the abuse and because this abuse is generally limited to a relatively small more real and elite class, what we call law enforcement.

48:21To me, that's there's an interesting twist to this because this is the merely the latest and most visible lately of law enforcement abuses. There are plenty of law enforcement abuses. They are considered an elite, for example, let's say an officer accuses you of doing something. Let's say they accuse you of speeding. Do the act you have to prove it in court or how often is it simply well, you know, we're going to take the officers word over everybody else's. There's a reason why law enforcement now wears body cameras. Why? Because of allegation, eventual proof of them lying, of them falsifying evidence in order to get, you know, make the conviction the the the arrest stick. These are concerns. What's the who hasn't said the power tensed corrupt and absolute power tensed corrupt absolutely. Well, that's what happens when you

49:23concentrate power in a small elite group. And they don't have that they need oversight because there's going to be people. There's only people that do bad things. That's human nature, which brings us back to the idea. If we do not govern ourselves, then we must be governed by a small elite. And then they get to choose that as the antithesis of freedom and see antithesis of liberty. But more and more, it seems that we're going that way as a nation, not just as a people. I mean, look at the recent lawsuit with meta where, you know, again, children have been using, we're using, you know, Instagram and Facebook and all that. And yeah, those things were harmful to children. And now the government wants to, we people want the government to protect their children. I keep asking where are the parents. Now, I'm not saying that we can perfectly protect our children

50:25for everything. But where are the parents? Why aren't the parents regulating their child's social media use? Why aren't the parents instilling in the child this idea of self governing? Here are the rules we expect you to abide by. We expect you to do, we don't have to do it for you. We expect you to do this. It's amazing what happens when we teach children to govern themselves rather than having to be governed by some small elite, some external group. So Thomas Jefferson was right. This has been an issue throughout history. Will we govern ourselves or will be ruled by a small elite? America, the United States was created on the idea that we could govern ourselves, that we were not only sovereign, but we could govern ourselves. And in many cases, we've been trading that power well to somebody else, to having a small elite govern us. Now, is that because

51:34we find governing ourselves hard? Maybe, no one ever said governing yourself would be easy. The question is, is it worth it? What are our priorities? Are we willing to give up our liberty in exchange for the ease of simply being told what to do? Does that sound like a slave to you? Think about it. If somebody else, a small elite gets to tell you how to live your life, it best makes you a surfe. If it worst, it makes you a slave. Is that what we're willing to do? Are we willing to give up our essential liberties? For the promise of being taken care of, of having decisions made for us. And every, because every time that's been tried, it's been not just an abject failure. It's led to the death of millions and millions of people. So as yet, another election approaches, right? A few, was this a few weeks? Ask yourself, do you want to govern yourself or do you want to be

52:38governed by an elite? Do you want to be free or ruled? Do you want to be at liberty or do you want to be controlled? Because ultimately, that's the question we're going to make. And we're going to choose for ourselves how we're going to be ruled. Are we governed by ourselves or are we going to be governed by others? That ultimately is the question that every election eventually comes down to. Yes, we are choosing of people to represent us. Are we asking them to govern us or to represent us to be public servants or public masters? That to me is a very important question. And it's a question I think we all need to spend a bit more time considering a bit more time discussing with our friends and family and neighbors before we go to the polls and decide who we're going to choose to represent us. Are they claiming that they will be a public servant?
