Want To Be A Great Copywriter? Keep Doing This ... (Klassic Kern)

About this episode

The human tendency to seek "hacks" and "loopholes" instead of doing the basic, consistent work required for success. Using personal stories about health and business, Frank explains why the simplest solution is often the most effective—and the hardest to start.

Key Takeaways

  • Avoid the "Hack" Trap: Humans naturally seek systems, shortcuts, and loopholes to avoid difficult, obvious truths.
  • The Power of Consistency: Whether it is losing weight or writing sales copy, the secret is simply doing the work every single day.
  • Accepting the "Punch": Success requires getting in the "metaphorical ring" and being willing to fail and get back up again.
  • Volume Leads to Expertise: Mastery, such as becoming an expert copywriter, comes from repetitive practice over a short, intense period.

Episode Highlights

The 45-Inch Waist Wake-Up Call

Frank shares a personal story about a recent doctor's visit where he was confronted with a 45-inch waistline. Despite his immediate instinct to search Amazon for a "hack" or a shortcut, the solution was the one he already knew: eat less and work out more.

Business Success is No Different

When Frank needed to raise capital for a new company investment—specifically a Rolls-Royce Phantom 8 for client experience—he didn't look for a new "secret" system. Instead, he sat down and did the fundamental task: he wrote a sales letter.

The 30-Day Mastery Challenge

Frank recounts the story of an 18-year-old student who wanted to be a great copywriter. The advice was simple: write a sales letter every day for 30 days on any topic—from duct tape to water. By doing the work consistently, the student became an expert in just one month.

Memorable Quotes

"There is always going to be a simple solution... eat less, work out more, and number three, of course, consistently."
"There is nothing that is going to make it easier except to quit. If you want to be a champion, you just have to get in the ring."
"Step number one: do the work. Step number two: refer to step number one."

I said, what do I do? He said, you're never going to believe this. I'm going to want you to eat less, and I'm going to want you to work out more. So I said, OK. And then I immediately went to Amazon. I started trying to find out some kind of way to avoid that. Transforming your business isn't about doing a million different things. It's about finding one big thing, and then leveraging that. Frank Kern has been advising entrepreneurs like you all day, every day, to do just that since 1999. If you want your next million, keep listening. If you want it faster, visit frankkern.com-fordslash-class. Here's Frank. The following audio was taken from a recent Frank Kern Facebook video. If you haven't already, make sure to follow Frank on Facebook. Man, I just had an unpleasant experience. I was on that right there this morning, it's about 7.45 in the morning, yeah, Sunday morning. Tisk off the treadmill. Well, I was on the treadmill. You might wonder, well, I went to the doctor recently, and he said, dude, you're wasted 45 inches around, 45 inches, three more inches, and I would have been four feet

circumference. Thankfully, it's not that big anymore. He said, what do I do? He said, you're never going to believe this. I'm going to want you to eat less, and I'm going to want you to work out more. I said, okay, and then I immediately went to Amazon. I started trying to find out some kind of way to avoid that. How is that? Where is some hack? Where is some system? Where is some loophole where I could avoid the obvious? Eat less. Work out more. Didn't find any. So, you know what I did? I ate less, and I got on that thing regularly, and it worked. But you know what? It sucked. It always sucks. Right? I don't want to get on that damn thing. That's horrible. I'm sweaty. It's not even eight o'clock yet. I'm already tired. That's no good. Right? But you know what? Not having a 45-inch waist is much more fun than avoiding getting on that thing. The temporary pain of being on that thing is significantly better than the long-term pain of having very high blood pressure, which I had past tense.

You know, the trick is no matter what it is we're trying to do, whether it's business or whatever, there's always going to be a simple solution. You know, when it came for me personally to my health, it was novel concept. Eat less. Work out more. And the number three, of course, consistently. Right? Recently, my company decided that we wanted to invest in some cars to drive our private clients around, to really give them an excellent client experience because why not? We love our clients. So we recently acquired this, that's the new Rolls Royce Phantom 8. When it came time to make that decision, to make that investment. So how am I going to raise that capital to do it? You know, I don't want to just sort of have hazardly do that. I want to create the capital. In order to do that, did the unthinkable, I sat down and I wrote a sales letter. Now everybody in direct response knows that, you know, if you want to create some kind of result in the business you make and offer, then you put that offer in the public. And one of the easiest ways to do that is a sales letter, but so many times we will try

to avoid just doing the basic thing that we know is probably going to work and we disguise ourselves. This guy is that avoidance, it's like we are trying to, we are working on something new. So maybe we will go to YouTube or we will click on some Facebook ad that will show some new hack, you know, some new recently uncovered secret, this is going to make everything so much easier. Let me tell you something, I have been a business advising entrepreneurs since 1999. There is nothing that is going to make it easier except to quit, right? If you want to be a champion, you just have to get in the ring and you have to accept the fact that metaphorically speaking, you are going to get punched in the face. And what makes you a champion is the ability to get back up again. You know, when I started creating the promotions that were designed and acquire that, they didn't work at first, rarely does anything ever work at first. I didn't create some brilliant thing that would, you know, bypass all of that.

I just got back in the ring, I got back up, I rewrote the sales letter. You know, if you want to become a great copywriter and a great advertiser or whatever, you got a couple of choices. You can take 9 million classes by every single book in the world, get in every private Facebook group, engage in all kinds of conversations, or you can do with a friend of my name, Ryan O'Donnell dead. He is 18 now. I first met him when he was 16. He said, I want to be a great copywriter. Will you show me how? I said, I can't really show you how, but I will give you everything that I know how to do. And he went through all the training, went through all the materials. He said, what now? I said, I want you just to write a sales letter. He said about what? I said, I don't care. Anything. If you'll write him, I'll read him, and I'll critique him for you. I didn't think you'd actually do it, you know, end up. He did it. He sent me sales letters about duct tape and sales letters about water. Sales letters about art. Anything. 30 days later, he was an excellent copywriter and he still is to this day. He's not even 20 years old yet. Was it some kind of magical secret? No. He did the work.

The trick isn't doing the work. The end, period. Step number one, do the work. Step number two, refer to step number one. I hope you find this helpful. Get yourself one of those, or just go outside, walk around if you want to feel better. If you want to get one of those, make offers, and keep making them until they work, and then when they work, keep doing the same thing. I hope you found this helpful. Take it easy.
