Where we broadcast live every weekday from downtown Winnipeg on 680's, C.J.O.B., where we talk everything to do with the Winnipeg Jets. It's free for all Friday, and with the race of the playoffs, certainly slipping away for the Winnipeg Jets following Thursday night's massive defensive breakdowns that sunk their chance against the Rangers in a 6-3 loss. Things are getting more and more difficult, which means there's no shortage of topics surrounding the Winnipeg Jets. With him fighting to stay in the hunt myself and Tyson, here from you, the listener on what the Jets need to do over their final 18 games, is it time to now completely commit to the tank? Should Winnipeg do everything they can over the remaining 18 to try and scratch and claw themselves into a postseason spot? As always on Friday, the floor belongs to you. How do you feel about the Winnipeg Jets today? Not good. Not feeling too good. Some would say bad, actually, but that was somebody say bad, yeah. That was a tough one last night. There was fight. There was fight there. They fought. It was a very, that was very reminiscent of Pawn Hockey. That game. Well, go out with the buddies to the, to the ODR, yeah, play a little shini. Yeah. Someone starts to run away with it at the end. Yeah. Well, they, they just couldn't hold the fork down. I mean, with that level of, with that amount of mistakes that happened last night in the offensive zone, I mean, I mean, it was going to happen.

3:10I mean, that's, that kind of stuff is just going to happen. Yeah. There's nothing you can do about it. And I, well, I mean, there's lots you can do about it, but you just can't, I mean, when you have that level of defensive breakdowns in your coverage, it was not, it was just, it was just biting, biting your time. It was going to happen. This game really was the perfect example of just kind of how far this Jets team is right now from being a legitimate playoff team because the rain has, have been terrible lately. And they're playing a bunch of young guys and, yeah, the Jets are playing some younger guys too, but it's like, okay, so you get 13 shots on it against the ducks and you make it a concerted effort. They all turn to 17 shots last night, but they just gave up just the stuff that they did give up was just quality. One, and add a home to getting 13 shots on anaheim is like, I mean, that team is Swiss cheese on defense right now. They're a bottom third defensive team and that was without John Carlson. He's not even in the lineup for them yet, and yet you can't even generate any real

4:10offense. Like Gustav Nyquist is the guy who got the probably their best chance of that game. That's not a good thing for long term success for having the guy who has four points, be the guy who's generating the best chances for you to you. It's free for all Friday. Full lines are open. Richard's on the line already. Hey, Richard. What's up? Yeah. It seems like the rich get richer and the poor get poorer in hockey. And you know what? The guy that I'm disappointed in, even though he got a goal yesterday, is Kyle Connor. And I'll tell you why I'm disappointed in him. If you watch his play, gentlemen, he very seldom checks when the puck is in their end zone. He just stands outside the dots and he waits for the puck. He doesn't even bother to go and check anybody. And if you look, if you look carefully at how many goals that line has given up this year, I think you'd be shocked.

5:12I really do. So I don't understand why did they give this guy's not worth $12 million. Well, I'll disagree. You're not worth it, gentlemen. I disagree with you on that. I think when you got to be a two way player, if he was that good, why didn't he, why did he only play one game in the Olympics? Why was and wasn't affected over a very small sample size? He wasn't effective. And Kyle Connor, you know, like you look at his offensive abilities and I don't disagree with you that the defense is a little bit lackluster at times. But there's not too many guys that can put up the production that Kyle Connor has, but I will, one point I will kind of make just off of off of your call here was just, you know, it's a comfortability factor sometimes where, you know, shifling in Connor, they were kind of forced to carry the load offensively for this team for the first half of the season. And as the season goes on, that kind of wears on guys. And it's just, I got to do it again, you know, like for the whole game and no one else is really contributing. But on top of that, when struggles like this are happening with the top line in the D zone,

6:17I would love to see a switch up, move Connor and shifling on different lines and see how they can perform. Well, here's the other thing that I want to just leave you guys with. We have to, we have to be a tougher team too. We have to go and get some toughness. Ever since now Stanley Stanley looks fantastic in Buffalo, I don't know about that. There was a lot of people complaining about him and Shan yesterday in the Buffalo zone, but keep going there Richard. Well, the thing is, you got to have toughness. I watched yesterday that Edmonton game and oh my God, you guys, that was unbelievable that game. I mean, that they're hitting and even, even Connor McDavid, I couldn't believe that he, he was like a ferocious lion out there. It was just unbelievable. And I don't see that. I just don't see that on this team. That defense, they've got to do something. If they don't get toughness, gentlemen, this team is going nowhere and that's what I just want to leave you with. This texture says your color is bang on. Kyle Connor is overrated. Tyler says, Kyle Connor is crap. I, I just don't, I don't agree with that. I don't agree with your assessment on Kyle Connor. He's not, he's, I'm not, he's definitely not a bad hockey player. He's not, he's not, he's not overrated. Is, is he a guy that can carry a line by himself? That's a fair question because we don't know he did, he's never had to. Right. But why, but why would he ever have to carry a line? Because I would, two, Richard's point. If you are going to be making 12 and a half million, I do kind of expect you to have to carry your line at some point. And that's not to say that I want Schifle and Connor split up indefinitely and never put back together. But we're at the point in the season where what it's said when you need a goal, what are you going to do? They're desperate for offense. So why would you break up Schifle and Connor right now because we, we don't know right

8:21now. Like my whole point is that. Okay. Well, let's, let's, let's find out when they're out of it five games from now. Okay. But I, I just don't, I don't, I don't, I, when you're desperate, when you're desperate for offense, the team outside of the top six outside of the top line couldn't score at all. It's, so I'm with Scott, I'm with Scott or Neil when he said I'm, I'm afraid to separate them because if all of a sudden, Kyle Connor falls off or Mark Schifle falls off, and then what are you going to do? But my whole thing with that is the experimentation part of it where the Jets clearly aren't making the playoffs now this season. And I took to wait five games to change things up. I think it's just, it's just wasting that time. We don't know for, for all we know putting Kyle Connor on a line with say, and you know, they drafted Cole Perfetti as a center. How many games does he play it as a center for the Winnipeg Jets? Yeah. He might suck at center. That's a very, I'm not discounting that possibility. But let's try some things that we have and especially when center is such a key issue for this team, try guys like Cole Perfetti or Gabe Villardi that have played center in juniors.

9:21See what they have there. And if they suck, then they suck and you just go back to what you had before. But I don't want to, I want to see some things and you know, this team has struggled to score goals. Yeah. But maybe two lines that have, say one line. I mean, I'm just saying, I'm saying, okay, maybe we're approaching the time to try something out, which I think this is more of a training camp thing. But if like the team still believes that they can make the playoffs, that's, I mean, I would, they haven't stopped believing that. And I, I tried like 20 games before when there was a call to do. It's like they were the only ones scoring. So how are you going to break up the only line that's scoring and providing any amount of offense when they were going through that, that rot? But they weren't winning anyways during that stretch. So if you're not winning, that's not an, I don't think that's an argument. Why not? But why don't you try something to see if you can win games? Try something that could maybe help you win those games instead of just, well, let's just keep throwing shifling and Conor out and have our other three lines do absolutely nothing the whole game and get disengaged and just not produce for us.

10:22And we'd have to rely on one line for every single game. That's not a, that's not a winning, winning recipe for success. Gary says Casey is two way. This guy is not watching the game. Warren says the caller. You call that goal or scored last night crap. Well, I wasn't the caller never called him crap. Another texture did this texture says, yep, after 10 years, he should be able to do better than stare at the puck 95% of the time in the defensive zone. And this texture says Conor not worth 12 million bucks. Let's go to the phone line. This one's from Mike. Hey, Mike. Good afternoon, Jim. How you doing? Good. Good. Thanks for calling. Yeah. I think that the individual on KC, he's helped a lot. I don't know how many times. I think I've lost count. He's a fantastic penalty killer too. He just doesn't go on the penalty kill because he's, I mean, he's, he just played two.

11:25He already is playing enough five on five and on the power play, but he's a fantastic penalty killer. Kyle Conor from three years ago was a bad defensive player. Kyle Conor now is not as bad as that player was. What? Rick bonus. He's changed. He's changed his plate. Yeah. Mark Schifley was in the same boat. Yeah. He was the one way player too for long this time. And Rick bonus had a nice little fireside chat with him. And next, you know, he has a 200 foot player, yeah, which is what they just read. Well, the gets don't have and will not see a championship unless they get one like we had before in Dale Howard Chuck and our team who's learning. We get one or two of those guys that we might see the promised. Mike, you think we need a superstar? That's what you're saying, right? We need. They need a superstar or a key player. They have a superstar in Conor, Halibok, but they just don't have a guy in front of them. No. I don't argue. I don't. I don't team care. I hope the players of team Canada are sat back and watch these last couple of games with Halibok and the nets for the jets. And where would he score in their goals 90 times out of 100 over his shoulder, over his

12:27shoulder going down too soon and no need to go down. So Mark, do you think that those goals last night were all on Conor, Halibok? Oh, yeah. You should have had though. If he was standing up, don't hit him in the shoulder instead of going in the net. So that nothing to do with nothing to do with horrendous defensive breakdowns, having over the front of the net, deflections and that sort of stuff. I'm talking about the games. I know that the shots are coming from the blue line. They're getting deflected because the jets handed over the front of the net. The one I'm thinking about the one I'm thinking about last night was not deflected, it was straight in, right over his shoulder. It's also very easy from the TV point of view to judge goals from a goal tender as opposed to what's actually happening on the ice. There's sometimes where there's a moving screen and if you listen, if listen, he allowed five goals on 16 shots, clearly he did not have a great game, but no, no, no, no, no,

13:29yeah, but I'm going to say come on three of like three of those deflected over the front of the net. I'm not Conor, Halibok. So we should have come back with Eric Karmie last night. Okay. I like to know how many single goal games did Nikolai ealers win for the depth last year that they're not winning this year, including overtime. Well, they missed them. There's no doubt about that. 14:30I know that CGB has the broadcast rights for the chat. So you guys kind of have to be a little careful if you're approaching that. But you can honestly think that this team has anything that they're showing us right now they would suggest they're going to be a playoff team anytime soon. So why aren't we talking about the important stuff? Like maybe making some trades in the summertime. Well, I think that he did like Connor hella buck because we're not going to want to stay on the cut with Connor hella buck with the team we have. If we wait too long, he's going to ask us to be traded and then we're going to really be in a bad position trying to get assets back. We're we're we're we're years away from that conversation. What do you have MVP? We're not we're years away from that conversation. Oh, come on guys, we're an old hockey team. Well, you can't let's see what happens over the summer. Let's see what's happening over the summer. You have you have you have two two sentiment that are going to be 33 next year. And if you bring days back, he's he's going to be 38. I totally I totally agree with you that that the time is running out.

15:33Like we are getting dangerously close to running out of time with this Jetscorp. But when you have an MVP, what time when when you have an MVP goalie and MVP for you, everything you can really run. I appreciate you listen to the show unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable. You like you, but I appreciate your listen, listen, this team needs, they need some change. They brought in the wrong players. They brought in the wrong players this summer. And we've seen teams like the capitals and the Bruins, they've gone through retools over the past couple of years and they made the playoffs the following season. Rosanne scored yesterday, okay, we're going to see what they need to bring in some guys like that. Yeah. That's what they need to do. They need to find the gavilar days. They need to find the Rosanne's and we're going to see it and then hope that they pan out. That's what they have to do. Because guess what? They run every single node trade list. Like, when we defend the Jets top players, that's not an indication that we think the rest of the lineup is performing to their standards. You know what I mean? Like the rest of the team all year as they've been a bad team all year. Like that's just, it is what it is. Like they won a bunch of one goal games last year, and they've lost a bunch of one goal games this year. I know. So it's, that's why I'm like, there's no guarantees that this team is going to be able to fix this. But you, you, you, you owe it to these guys that use that sign long term. 20:44who've been anemic offensively. That's the problem. Those are the issues. That's what's plaguing this team, the special teams letting them down. There's, there's, you know, the fact that the guys that they brought in didn't work out. It's been, it's been a disaster. I mean, these, these are the problems you, you can't, you're not going to get equal value for trading these guys out. It's just not possible. You'll never come close to getting what Connor Hallibuk is worth if you're going to put him out there in the trade market. So what is the best course of action here? How do you handle fixing this team and moving forward? Well, you got to deal with what you have in front of you because I'll tell you this, it would be, it would be astonishingly hard to trade your, your, your core players right now and bring back a team that youth that is going to win the Stanley Cup this year or the next. 21:44Now, I, I, where I, when I sent it in a text message, put Gabriel, we'll already, Perfetti, and that rolls in all on the same line. So that way, we'll already can groom and show these, these new players, hey, this is what we need. We need guys to step up. And I think guys like we'll already can step up and teach these young guys. And maybe we have to break up, shifly and, and corner to show that, hey, this is what we need you guys to do. Like we've been doing it all year. We can't do it anymore. We need you to pull up your socks and, and I just think this is what, what we need to do is we might need to break these guys up. So that way they can extend their experience and their, and their, their knowledge on the game. They have two more call ups, right? They have two more that they're allowed to leave. So yes, yeah, total. Yeah. But I mean, you can, like, with the emergency conditions to, so we'll see, I mean, I,

Uh, Scott, we never fire anybody in this organization anyways. So your job is safe, at least to the 20 game point of next season, except you need to start experimenting. Um, love the idea of moving the party to the second line, and either having him or a perfetti at center, Morgan Baron, the most misuse player in the NHL is definitely a top six player. He's probably our fourth best forward, move him to the first line. The guy's six, three, six, four, he skates as good as Kyle Connor, um, the guy has hands.

23:50I cannot believe for years he's been mired in the fourth line. The, I mean, we might have a answer right there, um, and as far as the defense goes, they're a dumpster fire without Morris and Pionk, there's no hope for them. Um, we, that's what we got to look at drafting. Yeah. Well, I, I mean, I, what I, what I think we've seen over the, uh, with Pionk missing is how poor he is to this team, to be honest, I'll, I'll give you that one, Jeff. I do want to get to one of your points, Jeff, about Scott or Neil, and, you know, you mentioned all the jets never fired people, but I, I really think you got to have an uncomfortable conversation this off season, you know, like with, with how the, with how the season has gone. And this, this, and I, I don't think that the organization behind closed doors thinks that this season is acceptable, but this, this is not acceptable. No. And, and that's the end of it. So you come out of the break and you go on a six game point streak, you're picking up, you know, you grab four wins, you know, there's, there's, there's sort of hope is starting to simmer and it's starting to look like starting to boil maybe even a little bit. And it's just totally cratered over these last two games that, honestly, the jets are

24:53in a position where they can lose maybe two or three more games. And the team hasn't performed. And some of that's probably most of it's on the players. Some of that's on Chevy and the team that he, that he put together and a lot of that is on the coaching staff as well for not getting the most out of this, out of the lineup. And so, I mean, is, is Scott or Neil, that's why I've always said it's 50 50. I don't know what's going to happen in the off season, but I think the organization needs to be open to looking at both sides of the coin on that is Scott or Neil, the head coach that we're going to give a training camp to get this team right again, or do we need another voice? That needs to be something that I seriously looked at and not just said, okay, Scott or Neil's our guy next year, we're moving forward. No, I, I think that that's the decision that needs to be, that needs to be really seriously, seriously considered. I'm not sure true North is, is seriously considering it though. And I think that that's a mistake. And if they're not. It's not privy to those, you know, behind closed doors conversations and what the players

25:53are talking about in the film room and the coaches are talking about in the film room. But what really bugs me are some of the things that we have heard when it comes to some of the media availability, when it comes to mentioning how personnel is a problem in over time, how wish the fan, the wish there was a little bit more jets fans out there in the game against Montreal. And we've heard a couple of times throughout the year, and we've heard a couple of times throughout the year, you know, what do you, what more do you want me to do, right? We've heard that a couple of times this year, and it's like, well, you're the head coach. That's part of your job is to figure out how to make this group go. And so far this season has hasn't worked. Jeff, I'll give you 10 seconds or they may have to move on. Well, that's why he's going to lean on the veterans and that's why you say, you know, what you're safe, at least till November, I want you to move a lot around. I want you to move bare enough, play these young guys, you know, do something different. Play comedy half the remaining games, get him, get him some action. I mean, at worst, we'll get a really good draft. Well, it's, that's looking better and better.

See, that's, I worry about that because if it comes out and things are similar and that Justin looked too bad there for his 20 games, but when we got to game 40, things started to sort of unravel around that time. I mean, it was a full on unraveling at that point. Yeah, that's too late to make any significant changes to any systems or anything like that. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you're able to, they were able to tweak some things coming out of the break, but it seems like they got figured out or it just is starting to go back to the way it was before. So that's, that's my concern, you know, but you don't have the time. That's like, that's my biggest issue is that you don't have the time to give our Neil 20 games to see if he turns things around because Mark Shitley's going to turn 33 in two days. Yeah, that's, that's my point, man. I don't, I don't think you have it. I'm not saying that Scott or Neil isn't the guy next year. I really, I, he, he very well, very well might be, but he might not be. And that needs to be, that really needs to be a part of what's going for it,

You know, I listened to your show quite often. Very good show, guys. Thanks a lot. Thank you. I've been listening to like 50% of the people just bashing Halibok, you know, maybe another 40% Connor. And then some, well, you know, with the coach or Neil, you got a typical team that is falling apart in front of Halibok. So it's not all his fault. Yeah, he plays some bad games. I wouldn't hit that, but it's a team to take over all that is just broken down. And the worst thing I hate about Winnipegars is last year. Everybody loved Halibok's best goal in the world. Nobody can beat him. And now he has a bad season. It's the worst one we ever got get rid of them. Winnipeg is so bad where when the team's on your hide and ride it, when it's on the low, get rid of it.

28:55And they've always been like that for the jets, the bombers, whatever. I've been listening for 40 years for both of them. Jets and bombers in the same crop. Yeah. Yeah. Well, Bill, I mean, it's, it's just people are frustrated. They, they, they, they had, Bill, they had high expectations for this season. And they had every right to feel that way going into this year. And it is, it has been nothing but a disappointment. I didn't foresee this thing happening. I, I will admit, I definitely thought this team was a playoff team. Still, I definitely thought that there was no way we'd be having these conversations right now at this point of the season.
