This tech could have averted the D.C. plane crash. Why wont Congress support it

The safety system at the center of the debate is enhanced Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast “In” technology (ADS-B In). It allows aircraft not just to broadcast their positions (ADS-B Out, already required), but also to receive real-time position, altitude, and trajectory data about nearby aircraft directly in the cockpit. That gives pilots situational awareness far beyond what radar alone provides. Investigators — including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) — say that if both aircraft involved in the January 29, 2025 midair collision — an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army helicopter — had been equipped with ADS-B In, pilots would have gotten up to about 59 seconds of warning instead of a much shorter, less useful alert, and likely could have avoided the crash.
