Today Explains

About this episode

Donald Trump’s plans to construct a massive ballroom at his luxury Irish golf resort have hit a literal and metaphorical "sluggish" roadblock, courtesy of a single determined local architect and a microscopic, endangered species of snail.

You probably don't know him, but a whole lot of people in Ireland do. His name is Liam Madden. He is a 76-year-old architect from one of Ireland's smallest counties, and he has been called one of the country's most accomplished rage-baiters. This guy is notorious for holding up just about any development project around the country. Over more than 50 years, he has lodged thousands of planning appeals, either himself or on behalf

of other people. And he has got a pretty impressive success rate. According to Madden, he doesn't win all the time, but he wins. He wins over 90% of the time. He held up a Gaelic football stadium's project over a past dispute that he had with Ireland's biggest sporting organization. He dressed up as Clint Eastwood in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly as he objected to plans for a local movie theater development. He objected to Conor McGregor's plan to build a hotel on the coast of Dublin and then challenged Conor McGregor to a bear-knuckle fight. And he even beat Donald Trump back in 2020, not a bear-knuckle fight, but Madden successfully blocked the Trump organization's plan to build a massive sea wall at the President's golf course in the town of Duneberg to protect the property from coastal erosion, citing the wall's environmental impact on a protected species of there it is, snail. He called the victory his quote, greatest day, telling the local paper St. Patrick on March 17th, drove the snakes out of Ireland, and Liam Madden

wanted to emulate that by driving Donald Trump out of Ireland. Okay, so Liam Madden is a true character and he is really good at blocking things. Why am I telling you about him today? Well, because now Madden is coming for Donald Trump's ballroom, yes, guys, there is another front ballroom, not the one at the White House. This takes us back to Duneberg and back to the snail. In a recent profile of Madden's latest and possibly greatest objection, the Washington Post said this quote, while flipping through the papers, Madden saw what he recalled as a golden opportunity. In Duneberg, roughly three hours from Madden's house by car, Eric Trump had proclaimed his intent to build quote, the nicest ballroom in Ireland. You can make this stuff up. Madden knew then what he must do. The article says, if there is a god in heaven, he declared one July evening, I will win the planning appeals and capitalize on it for notoriety. So this summer,

Madden appealed a planning decision, allowing a 320 seat ballroom to be built at Trump's Dune berg Golf Course. Like his last battle with Trump, this objection is hinging on the teeny weeny, narrow mouthed, whirl snail, and endangered species. This is Matt Rogers from Los Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. This is Bowen Yang from Los Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. You know when people try a new food and suddenly it's like, wait, that's the reaction. A lot of people are having when they first try Cupid Mayo. It's the one with the red cap and the little baby on the bottle. You've probably seen it in the grocery store before. And if you've ever just walked past it, some people would say that's a huge mistake because this mayo is different. Most mayonnaise uses whole eggs. Cupid only uses egg yolks, which gives it this rich umami flavor. It's smoother, deeper, and almost buttery. Once people try it, they start putting it on everything. Examages, fries, burgers, some fans even swear by dipping pizza crust in it.

And once you notice it, you start seeing it everywhere. Chefs use it, restaurants use it. People who really care about flavor use it. Never try it, grab the bottle with the red cap next time you're at the store. Put it on just about anything, then you'll understand. Cupid, the original Japanese mayonnaise. Dave Roberts here. According to Madden, the ballroom's planning application left out the existence of helicopter landing pads on the property and did not provide an assessment of their environmental risk. And Madden says that this omission was a quote, fatal error. And by failing to account for the helicopters possible ecological impact on the land that these snails live on, he argues that the ballroom application, it ain't sound. So we reached out to the Trump Organization for comment on Madden's appeal. We did not hear back. But to add to this guy's intrigue, Madden doesn't have cell phone. He does not have social media. He does not have a website. He doesn't even own a television. So he is not exactly

all that easy to track down. But here on Connect, we have a secret weapon. A senior producer straight from the Emerald Isle, more specifically from the Kingdom of Kerry, our very own Neath Cagney called up. One of the local butchers in the area who is also a landowner in the town and has used Madden exclusively. This butcher tells Neve over the years for all of his planning disputes. He described Madden as quote, great architect and mad as a box of frogs. And then we spoke to the man himself. And Neve can confirm great architect and mad as a box of frogs. Quote, I'm something of a celebrity here and very good at what I do. Madden told us over his very muffled landline. When asked about his appeal against the ballroom construction, which cost him about 50 euro to file, Madden said that his job is to find a needle in a haystack and that that needle is the helicopter. Quote, it will be around Christmas when Trump gets his bad news.

Madden told us hinting at a looming final decision from the countries that pellet planning board. Quote, this is far from over, he said. As for the praise that he has received from his satisfied customers over the years, Madden said this in a statement to connect on MSNOW. Quote, clients have bestowed compliments on me in over the top Irish fashion describing me as a hero, a god, and even offering to erect statues in my honor. That's how we talk in Ireland. Mr. Madden, we know you don't own a television, but if this somehow gets to you, please come on this broadcast. Maybe around Christmas, especially if that 90% success rate is anything to go by. you
