0:00Welcome to this day in history. It's April 24, and 110 years ago today, a group of Irish revolutionaries launched an armed uprising against British rule that became known as the Easter Rebellion. The rebels rioted, attacked the British provincial government headquarters in Dublin and seized Dublin's General Post Office before declaring Irish independence from British rule. After British authorities launched a counter-offensive, the uprising was suppressed, and 15 nationalist leaders were executed. However, the rebellion marked the beginning of a period of renewed hostilities that lasted into the 1990s, and it wasn't until July 2005 that the Irish Republican Army announced its members would surrender all their weapons.
