Garrica, Pablo Picasso's 1937 painting inspired by the destruction of the Basque town of Garrica during the Spanish Civil War, is arguably one of the artist's most famous works. In 1939, he gave the painting to New York's Museum of Modern Art on an extended loan, and stipulated that it not be returned to Spain until democratic liberties were restored.

1:01That moment finally came on this day in 1981, when the painting arrived in Madrid, a powerful symbol of Spain's transition away from dictatorship. Surprisingly fact, Spain began moving toward democracy in 1975, when King Juan Carlos I began his reign. But questions from Picasso's heirs over whether the country had fully satisfied the artist's conditions delayed the painting's return.
