It's September 11th. 25 years ago today, at 8.46 am, terrorists flew an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with thousands of gallons of jet fuel into the North Tower of New York City's World Trade Center. Then, 17 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767 appeared from the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center and sliced into the South Tower.

1:00The collision triggered a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. By the end of that morning, both twin towers had collapsed, a plane had crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a fourth hijacked plane had crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11th attacks, remained at large for almost 10 years. He was finally tracked down and killed by US forces at a hideout in a Bada Bada Pakistan in 2011. Also on this day in history, in 1814, the US defeated a British squadron in the Battle of Platsburg. In 1971, former Soviet leader Nikita Kruchev died, and in 1985, Pete Rose became Major League Baseball's all-time hits leader.
