That was the case on this day in 1985, when the Coca-Cola Company announced it was changing the formula of its signature soft drink for the first time in 99 years. The short-lived, sweeter, new Coke, as it was called, debuted to a consumer backlash that pundits called the marketing blunder of the century. The soda company quickly brought back the original formula three months later. Surprising fact, in blind taste tests, consumers generally preferred new Coke over Pepsi and the original Coke. Also on this day in history, and 1564, William Shakespeare was likely born. In 1954, baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron hit his first major league home run. In 1969, Seerhan Seerhan was sentenced to death for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.
