1:00year left in his deal. He'd already got his bonus. So he's made a zold four million in cash. You probably think you know what? On the open market, I can get four million or close to it. Take away some taxes, maybe in California. It'd be very similar. Campbell had four years left. Do you think he was going to walk away from twenty million bucks? No. Darnel Nurse wasn't either. And Darnel Nurse played like 20 minutes a night for you. Twenty two minutes a night actually. So was totally two different scenarios. It's not it's not like the team just gets to wake up and say, you know what? We didn't like the contract we gave you. So we're going to void it. Otherwise, those will be happening all the time. It's guaranteed money. Both sides have to agree. And it's rare to see a veteran of Crider to do it this, this close to the start of the season. Like obviously the ducks are telling we're trying to trade you. We don't want you and because I don't want you's probably an unfair way to word it. It's like we can't afford you because I got to pay Kater Gochay. So now they're going to get rid of Crider. Crider 50 point player gone for nothing. They traded away Mason McDabbysch. Troy Terry who had 57 points in 61 games last year. He's on LTIR

2:07for the first two months of the season. That's like three or top seven forwards gone. The ducks are I don't know, man. It's going to be hard for them to repeat what now they might get 92 points again, but I'm not sure 92 points we get in the playoffs. So we'll see. And of course, we're a few days away from rookie camp a week away from on ice for the NHL. And the orders for a little bit of a curve ball. Not a lot of people expected it when they came out that Alex for minton signs a one year league minimum deal at 850 K. What did

3:13you make of it? I know like I talked to Stan Bowman. I know you talked to at the Stan Bowman in a conversation. What did you come away with after talking to the GM and what was your initial reaction when you heard the signing? Well, I mean, look at the elephant in the room is that he's one of the London five, right? That's the biggest part of this. If they just signed him, it would barely be worth it, you know, we wouldn't spend the segment on it. But he's one of those guys. He's making his way back in the league. Carter Hart's played last year. It sounds like Dylan Dubay is going to finally make his way back to. He's going to probably play for the same of those booze this year. Farmerton looks like he'll play in Edmonton. And so there's there's there's multi sides to the story. Can they use a good PK guy? Well, he was a good PK guy when he lost playing NHL three years ago. You know, is he still? I don't know. You know, they don't know either. Right? When Stan Bowman, he probably told you the same thing he told me when when Savoy and Yamark went down, he looked at the UFA list for guys that were good penalty killers. He said there

4:17wasn't even a list, right? All the UFA's out there weren't penalty killing guys. So, you know, on the one hand, they got a real guy they think is going to be a good penalty killer. Is he? I don't know, but really the bigger story, Jason is should, you know, the Edmonton Oilers be signing this guy, giving him the second chance. What are your thoughts? Well, it, I discuss it at the top of the show. I really, I look at Foreman's and he was acquitted in court. So like, that's a fact. He also, uh, hockey Canada felt like he did something wrong because they made a payout many years earlier, right? In an offer with, uh, with EM, the lady. So clearly they felt there was something that wasn't right. Right? So the moral code, the criminal code sometimes are different. I think that's, uh, that's fair. And so even though he was found not guilty in a court of law, I don't think he was innocent in the moral world, right? In society. So now at the same time,

5:22he, uh, he paid his price, right? He was kicked out of the league for four years coming off a season where he had 18 goals coming out of an ELC. He's probably going to sign three year deal at $3 million. Probably minimum at that point. So probably cost him $10 million, let's say, right? Not to mention the public humiliation. His name is always connected to that. Um, the court case was, was very public. You could see the transcriptions. You could see all the text messages that were exchanged like lots of your dirty laundry got aired out there. And that is. So it's not like, okay, yeah, I didn't go to jail. Sure. You didn't do that. But there was, there was some punishment there. There's, there's no question in my mind. And he was out of the league for four years. Could say kind of did his time. So he gets a second chance, right? Craig McTavish is a guy who got a second chance many years ago in a situation that, you know, obviously was awful and, you know, took someone's life and, you know, and Craig, you know, kept in communication with that family and did his due diligence and, and you know what, went on to deliver pretty successful life. So, no, for minton, he'll get that opportunity now, right? And we'll see. Now the difference is,

6:28he's been out of the league for four years. McTavish is only out of league for one, right? Like, four years a long time, even though he was playing hockey in Switzerland. It's not in the NHL. It's not as quick. It's not as good. Now, who knows? Maybe just getting back to the NHL. We'll, we'll be in that. I'm sure getting acquitted and getting back to the NHL might be mentally a relief for him. So I don't really have an issue with a guy get in a second chance because, you know, there was some severe punishment, right? Hand it down for him in it. I would still like, you know, to see these guys who come back do something in the community, you know, that shows that, hey, you know what, I'm aware of what I did was wrong. And I want to show it, not just play hockey, right? But that's a perfect utopian scenario. And it doesn't seem to be something that we see very often in these situations. Yeah. I mean, let's see. The guy just showed up in town here. I suppose I'd say, you know, give him a chance. Let's see what he does. Let's see how he reacts. But most, you know, pretty much everything you just said, I think I'm mostly in agreement with the orders of

7:31man, a bit of a cottage industry like, listen, the talk around the NHL today is someone's side Alex for minton. Oh, it's Edmonton. Are you surprised? Who else would have signed? Right? That's the talk around the NHL. Edmonton's become that team, you know, and maybe Vegas secondarily. Edmonton's signs guys. Other guys don't want it. Other teams don't want to touch. And you know what? I don't I'm not all together against that. You know, Edmonton signed a van der Kaine, right? You know, they got what they paid for. They got a good player for a little while. Then they got a guy that was hurt a lot. Then they got a guy that got sick of and had to move out of town. You know, Edmonton signed Corey Perry, gave me shot. They had a really good player and a really good guy and a good person. Corey Perry had one bad night in his life, you know, whatever. They signed Stan Bowman, you know, I guess Stan Bowman's book is still open. We don't know if how it's going to end here. To me, Stan Bowman hasn't been a perfect GM, but he's been a very active

8:33one, right? It's nice to have a GM and Edmonton that's got big colonies that makes a lot of moves that takes it right, takes a leap, makes a trade. They're not all perfect. And then they signed Mike Babcock. Who knows, man, he didn't coach the game here yet. So I don't, you know, if that's the team you have, I'm not completely disappointed. I think I'd rather if you're giving me two extremes, Jason, I'd rather have a team that's the throws its hat in a lot of different rings. Then one that sits in the sidelines and only signs the most pristine player ever, because that team's probably not very good. But tension, I will say one thing about, I think Stan Bowman, it's unfair to lump him with all the other guys because the other guys had direct actions of their own, all in these cases. Him, the thing he was guilty of was not following up on something that he never did, right? And was told a story at one point, hey, this is what happened and then his boss said he was going to do something. So I just want to point that out. I do think I agree. It's a situation. Anyone who read the different read that that lawyers report. Yeah, it's very clear

9:38what happened in Chicago. Stan Bowman's bosses said to him, stay out of this. We're going to handle it. Yeah. And so now Stan, if he was in this conversation right now, Stan, we'll say to you, I should have followed up on that. Sure. Sure. It got handled. But I'm here to tell you, and I've said this on your show before Jay, if Ted Rogers phones Mark Spector and says, stay out of its Spector, I'm going to handle it. I'm probably not phone and Ted Rogers back two weeks and asking him if he handled it or not, right? Yeah. I'm probably not doing that. Absolutely. I feel the same way. Yeah, I think Stan Bowman, he's a good person and he got a bad rapid. Could he have done more? Yeah, did he learn from it? Yeah, did he spend a couple years on the sidelines because of it? You bet he did. But the other thing is he's one of the guys that's actually like went out and did a lot of research, did a lot of work on it. Talk to beach about it like, you know, directly because again, he like I found in his case, like a lot of people forget like he didn't do any of this action. He didn't, he wasn't the, he wasn't the perpetrator here. He never did any of that. So I do think there's

10:41a separation involved in it. But nonetheless, yeah, it's an like St. Louis, you know, they got Dubé Vegas, got Carter Hart, other teams have done it. Obviously, you know, Amitins maybe done it more than some others and, you know, McDowell worked out quite well. You know, we'll see where they go. Like how much of an impact is Formerton going to be? That's, to me, that's probably the bigger question. You know, I talked to Stan about it and he was signed. You know, if Matt Savoy doesn't get hurt, this guy probably doesn't get signed in Amitin because they don't really need him. But Savoy was one of their best penalty killers. Henryk was the other one. They're both gone and they're penalty kill outside of one year. The last four has last five years has, has stunk to be honest. So I think they're, they're hoping that they can just try to fit some other penalty killers. And also shows a little sign of maybe desperation doesn't cost you much. It's a league minimum salary and a guy who's been on the four years, right? And he was a good penalty killer four years ago. Doesn't mean he's going to be a good penalty killer now. Okay, but he's, listen, the kid, the guy

11:42just turns 27 like on Sunday. Yeah. So he's in the prime of his hockey career. He's big. He's really fast. We saw that only today at the captain's skate. He's one of the faster players out there, right? He's shown before or he's a good penalty killer. Why wouldn't he still be? Do you forget how? No, you don't forget how. I'd take him a little while to catch up the speed here. But in terms of like, let's leave the London stuff behind for a second and talk about the hockey player. You get a free player like this at 850. Are you kidding me? Like I don't. I, you know, there's only one reason to me why you wouldn't sign Alex form a 10 and that's because of the hat, the history we've been talking about. But I think he's got every chance to turn in. This is a team looking for third line guys that make a little bit of impact. It's been a very unimpactful bottom six on this team for a long time. Why can't Alex form to be that guy? Absolutely.

12:44Very possible. We'll, we'll see for sure whether he does or not. Spec, I think just based on conversation that I had today and then what we saw on the ice, I think to start preseason, McDavid and Drisled are going to be the other Newton Hopkins diamond and Howard. And maybe they start the regular season because there's only a few preseason games for those lines. How long do you think it lasts? Oh, five minutes. This is the ongoing saga. Man, they're together. They're a part. This is our, this is our world, buddy. You know, you and me and all the other fans. This is what we get. It's never going to be one thing for the rest of time. It will always change. And I don't care how it starts. You and I are on the same page. We both agree that McDavid and Drisled are running their own lines. Makes the orders of better team and a harder team to play against. I agree with that. You agree with that. I know what I listen to your show. Badcock's coming in the door. He's going to figure it out for himself. And I'm here to tell you by December, they're going to be on their own lines. And he's

13:48going to go, yeah, most of the time, that's probably better. Yeah, probably. Like I don't mind mixing it up every now and then and doing it. I understand it. And there's some validity to that. But in the long run, I think they're better off on their own line. And let it. And let it. It's as simple as this. A really good. DJ Smith would know this. It's as simple as this. When you start in the part and the other teams beaten yet and you put them together, the other teams bench goes, oh, man, you know, we got to deal with this. This is a, this is a plan B that's going to cause us to adjust and to think and to maybe do something different. And I know the stuff about home and road and matchups and all that. But when you bring them together for the third period, the other bench notices when you take them apart, the other bench says, ah, we beat them, right? They're taking McDavid and I said, look part. Well, hell, we got this game three quarters one. So that's the, the effect on your opponent is, is it, it's, it's the complete opposite,

14:52putting them together and taking them apart. That's why I say you start them apart. And you always have the chance to put them together later in the game. Speck makes sense. But they had their annual golf outing, which I think at most players look forward to, especially when you get to play at a track like double eagle, the the private extremely exclusive course of the owner here, the McConnell family. And he wasn't part of it. And it doesn't have a contract, not a member of the team at present. So you go, oh boy, okay. I don't think that's really anything to necessarily worry about right now. It doesn't do anything any good for people outside the situation to worry. Anyways, and it may be something we look back on at this time next year and go, right, he did sign like a few days before camp. But the closer it gets now, the more interesting it's going to become of course. When you look at a number and we've seen the numbers go obviously, Anthony, like is Phantilly a $13 million player? What do you think? Well, I mean, you know, when you're going five years, which I think is going to be the minimum

18:02term here, much of it is projecting, right? He's their number one center. That's what those guys are paid. His numbers, if you put them up next to Carlson, are almost identical. Now, I'm not saying he's an $18 million a year player. He did not get an offer sheet and Leo Carlson did. Yep. I think Bidard brings those discussions back tilted back the other direction. And his numbers are not Bidard, right? So is he five years 13? I think the club, if they could go longer, would go longer. I'm not sure he wants to give up more than one year of free agency. So maybe that's where the issue is, like what's the number at 16? The club would go, you know, say 13, 13, 5 over six years. And maybe don't want to do that over five. You're going to pay more if you're taking up more of the UFA years. So I don't get the sense that it's like a bridge that cannot be

19:06you know, covered, cannot be reached by either of these two sides. I still think it gets done, but but clearly the game has been played here as to who's going to panic first. And with an agent like Persona and a veteran GM like Don Woodell, I'm not sure that's going to be part of it. Okay. So you don't think the bridge between the two is that far right now. So that's good. What about the Marchenko rumor that doesn't seem to be going away about him being dealt? Yeah. So here's how I see this. Their top concern here is to win. They have to win. This is no longer about building for the future. This is winning now. A, because they want to win. B, because they want to keep Zach Werenzky here. Well, the way to keep Zach Werenzky here and the way to win is not to trade Carl Marchenko right now. If I can be blunt about it now, is there a trade that beats up the Blue Jacket in return for Marchenko? He's a really talented player on a really good

20:12salary right now, but the Blue Jackets can't, they would need the equivalent of him in return. And the equivalent of him in return most likely is an $8 million dollar player, which they don't have room for that and, and Tilly. So I think it's here. I listen to hope is with the addition of the Chuskin, who apparently he and Marchenko know each other or fond of each other, that the Chuskin and Marchenko in addition to becoming a solid linemate, they may well play on the off wings of, of, of, and Tilly can become in locked up here and convinced Tilly that this is a place he wants to say. Does it work? I've no idea. Okay. We're in, things turn around. No idea, but I think that is the plan for now. Because I look at Columbus on paper and let, and I assume that Fantilly is going to get signed, right? So you've got Fantilly and you got Nechuskin and Charlie Coil and Sean Monahan and Cole Sylinger and, and Caril Marchenko and Voronkov and, and

21:18even Connor Garland, like they, they've got, you know, Miles Wood, like they've got some Ken Johnson. They seem to have a lot of guys where you could look and say, you might not have like a number one top score, but you could have nine decent productive, like three quality lines. Is that how they do? And do you think it's enough to get back in the playoffs in the East? Well, it is an interesting time right now because I don't think this team is a bad team. I don't want to at all. Four years in a row now, they've made points improvements after starting to rebuild, you know, back when they moved to Lino and, and at Kinstead, they've gotten better in each of the last four years. It never goes fast enough. Of course, there's, there's impatience here in the marketplace, like never before, but it's been a tough summer here. No lies. The Werenzki stuff rattled the fan base. There's been some other stuff, you know, away from the ice, getting rid of the radio broadcaster, the Marchenko rumors. This drag out with Fantilly now, that's really a nerve

22:25some people. So I don't think they're a bad team on paper at all, as you mentioned. There's there's quite a few things there to like. And yet it feels like it's kind of teetering a little bit, like people are waiting for the work. I'm very excited. I'm very, very interested to see how Rick Bonnet handles this training camp, because I do think there needs to be a bit of a mood blister here. There needs to be a bit of a steadying here. It just feels like the first moment that something goes or I that this thing could really unwind in a bad way because of of all of the stuff that seems to be swirling around it. Yeah. Aaron Porcelain joins us here on sports 1440. You know, there was the Werenzki news and then that went away. They got Jet Greaves signed. So I think I've really good contract it at five million bucks. Elvis Merzlikens, 5.4. Where do you see him this year? Like how long is he in Columbus? I know he's a UFA and you mentioned they had some other Russian guys, but Jet Greaves has clearly taken over the starter role. What's the plan for Merzlikens?

23:26Well, that's it's become a bit murky here. Merzlikens had shoulder surgery last month. He is currently in Switzerland. He's having has another checkup either tomorrow. I believe this week and he's going to be traveling back to Columbus to be seen by the team doctors here. But they are almost certain to start the season with Jet Greaves as the number one potentially Phoenix coply as the number two or the number three. And I'm going to they're going to bring in a goalie and a camp on a PTO. I'm almost sure of it. Okay. And I would suspect they're going to be a team that's looking at the waiver wire because I was just told earlier today, quote, it's going to be a while on Merzlikens. So this is us and Jet Greaves was clearly the number one. Merzlikens is now the number two despite his salary. But right now he's kind of out of the picture, at least for the foreseeable future until they get more clarity on the shoulder injury. The

24:28recovery, I should say. Okay. So then is coply the backup? As of now, as of now, be on be on alert for a PTO who could make the team Conor Ingram. And I mean quite possibly. And keep an eye on the waiver wire. I think the blue jacket's based upon the way the standings ended last year would be 14th in the pecking order. What's different with them is if they claim a guy on waivers, he would they would be keeping them. So a lot of themes would be reluctant because they'd have to keep the guy. The blue jackets would be looking for a guy quite possibly to keep. Okay. So they'll be looking for another goal. So Merzlikens out for, you know, significant amount of time here. Yeah, and it's hard to get a real idea specifically of what that is. They know he's not going to be ready for the start of the season. The hope is that here in the next couple of weeks, just check up this week in Switzerland, just check up with the team doctors to follow. That they'll have a clear sense of how long he's out. It's possible that he

25:32misses quite a bit of this season. But that's all we don't know right now. It's just that's what was said to be earlier today. So he and so that appointment you said is next week like when they come to camp. Yes, meeting with doctors and Twitzel is at some point this week. And then he will be traveling to Columbus. Have you seen by doctors here? He's back in Switzerland where he fences off season. He had surgery in the States, not in Columbus. But it's been back in Switzerland for a couple of weeks now. Okay. Well, that's an interesting one on the goal. Like Connor Ingram, you know, I had, you know, he might know on a PTO. I might say, hey, just sign me because the PTO, I can only play two games anyway. But I could see them looking and say, hey, Connor Ingram is probably an upgrade over over Phoenix, Coply. I would. Yeah, it's very fair. Absolutely. Yeah. Absolutely. Anybody going to surprise and come out of the, you know, a youngster and make this team? Well, the one young player, I think that they're, they're, I wouldn't say, carving

26:36a spot for, but he's going to get a look and he's going to get a chance to look at Del Bell Balloons. Okay. Uh, there's been several times the last three or four years, two or three years. And has been a times productive. Uh, right now they've got an opening on the fourth line. Isaac Lundstrom, uh, had a, a killi's issue early in the off season. Yeah. It's not going to be ready for the start of the season. So there's a fourth line center's job open. They could put cylinder back there, but I think they want him on that third line with Charlie Coil and Matthew Olivier. Um, but, uh, I think Luca Del Bell Balloons has a chance. They got a, a group of guys that would have to clear waivers, uh, to go back. He's one of them, Del Bell Balloons. So I think they'd like to give him an extended look here early in the season. Now, I want you to think about something. Think about the Oilers fan who stayed up past midnight watching Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final two years ago. Who wept when it ended? Who has bled for this team through 40 years of heartbreak? And that person is being told to pay more. Think about the senior on a fixed pension who is

I grew up listening the games on the radio. It's not the end of the world. It can be pretty good. It can be pretty entertaining at times. But it is definitely I didn't know it was that much of an increase in five years. That's now lots of other things have gone up to, but 80% seems like just a tad greediness and gouging for sure. But if people keep paying it, they'll keep raising it. It's kind of how it's going to work. So it's unfortunate, but that's kind of the state of where you're at right now in the in this sporting landscape. And I'm not I'm I don't think it's necessarily going to improve anytime soon. Just kind of how how he's feeling this year after a few long playoff runs compared to now. Yeah, just excited. I'm off time to miss the game for a little while. And you know, that's a good thing. So Miss playing miss being here with the guys. And that brings energy can feel energy around the room. It's all it's all been positive. Same optimism that you had coming in the last couple years. Yeah, there's always optimism in our room. He was also asked about the communication, you know, with his new head coach. And what's the communication being in this offseason with Mike Babcock? Yeah, you know what, there's been good conversations. Lots of conversations throughout the summer. It's all been very positive, very good. Everything's in a great place coming in. And for him, now that he's had time to kind of decompress, what was his biggest takeaway from last year as the captain? I think it was just I don't want to say

34:04we took it for granted or complacency. You know, you go to a couple of final two years in a row, you feel pretty good about your group and you feel pretty good that you know when it matters, you're going to be able to turn it on. And obviously, you know, who knows without injuries, maybe we could. But we'll never know. The leagues too good, teams are too good to not kind of go through the checkpoints. That you have to go through in a season. And I think you see it here today. Guys are already digging in hard and getting ready for camp. And we want to hit the ground running this year. I said, I'll off. I think evidence is going to have a good start for a variety of reasons. Schedule. Very, very lack schedule and not great opponents early on. Be rested team. None of their core guys had any sort of off season surgery. Hyman's healthy dry subtle cell team with David's healthy, Bouchard's healthy, a coma's healthy, go down the list. They're all healthy right now. Now that can obviously change in preseason or whatever. But right now it's healthy.

35:04Then you throw in a new coach and you want to press a new coach and you feel like there's there's going to be some changes systemically. And we've seen that that this group when they get a new coach, they get motivated, they get inspired and they have a good start. Doesn't matter if it's in the season or at the start of the year, they have a good start. And that's why I think it's likely to continue. I wraps up a busy Wednesday.
