0:00Thursday afternoon. Of course, you got another NFL game tonight, light night in a major league baseball. The Jace got some help as Texas blew a three nothing lead and they lose. No other games tonight that will impact the playoff race for them. The white socks, again and closer, maybe to clinch a playoff spot. The Yankees hosting the Iraqis and the raise taken on the right. The raise actually, I think, can one day loss. Otherwise, they could have clinched, but they didn't either. So the only two games left tonight. Of course, NHL rookie camps get going tomorrow, Howard Samanski, kind of the the headliners and Hudson for the orders at their rookie camp, which will go Friday through the weekend. It wraps up. I think they got four days of of skates and then we'll have the vets take their medicals and everything on Tuesday. Then they'll be on the ice Wednesday. Thursday Friday next week and their first preseason game against the Winnipeg Jets will be a week from this Saturday and two weeks from there. It's over. And then the regular season starts a lot of the

2:08I know you were down at the orders. I was at the the Elks today. You know, it's a cap in skate. There's not a whole bunch going on. Was Dickinson in town yet? I didn't see him. No, it was a smaller group. There's only like look like about 18, 19 guys here today. So there's a few guys that obviously didn't skate it. I don't think I saw our newton Hopkins Jari went early didn't skate with the group. So it's just a lighter day. So I did not see Dickinson, but don't, you know, didn't see every guy either. You never know sometimes. Yeah, no, fair enough, but yeah, I didn't know some there yesterday. So he might not be there. It's not, you know, there's not mandatory. You don't need to be in there that early for every year. So I, I understand it. Leon dry settle, uh, talk today. I heard his, his comments in regards to, you know, they hate Babcock. He's a, he speaks like a straight shooter and everything like that. And like, it really seems like this. I almost sense in the players like they feel like they need someone to, to be a taskmaster for them. And I, I

3:10don't know like, I guess so, but I'm a little perplexed as to why that seems to be the theme. Yeah. I mean, it's certainly, you know, it's a change from Chris Noblock. The Chris Noblock was as, you know, he was a softer spoken guy. He doesn't come straight at you. He didn't, you know, in our certainly with us media guys, he almost never criticized the player. I mean, he almost never said negative things about one of his players. Um, I felt like he was a more gentle touch in the room. I wasn't in the room, but, uh, I, I, more so Jay, I feel like they just, everything that can be different than what they've had so far, they want to be different. I think they feel like all the approaches that we've done, we've tried them all. We don't have any cups yet. So we got to try to change as much as we can change. And I think that goes to the coach. I think it goes to the regular season approach. I think it's a really good bet to see them win the Pacific this year because that's something they've never done.

4:12Yeah. Uh, I think they're just looking Jay to change every possible angle that they can. Yeah. And that's fair. Um, but again, like you've been in the cup two out of three years. Like it's not like they're that far off. I don't know if you need a massive change, right? Like the biggest thing is really close to what they are. The change should be, the change should be try to try to stay healthy in the playoffs, right? That's probably one of the biggest factors why they didn't win the cup. Sure. Hey, listen, the hockey history is littered with teams that got to the final and just didn't have the juice. I covered that 2011 Stanley Cup with Boston and Vancouver. Everyone in Vancouver, I'll tell you, if we had our team, we win series. You know, they were up, they were up. What were they up? Three to two. Sorry. Yeah. They're up three to two in the series and they just had a bunch of guys got injured and they, you know, they'll tell you it Boston won't say that, but Vancouver will. They said it cost them serious. Sure. You know, you can't control that though is my point that you can't. We all want to have healthy teams

5:16in round four, but you've got no control over that. No, no, no, no, you don't, but it is, you, you can't overlook how much of a factor it is for any team, right? Like it's, uh, that's why, that's what makes it so infuriating at times because, you know, a little bit of luck is, uh, can go a significant long way to, uh, to win in a Stanley Cup. There's no, look at Carolina. Carolina gets one of the easiest rides I've ever seen 100% of the top last year. Yes. No, they play three teams that that never make the playoffs or have very little playoff experience and smoke right through them in like, you know, something like 13 or 14 games. I think they lost one period of hockey to Montreal and that was it. And boom, you're healthy, you're barely played, you're in the final is it's been a, you know, the opposite of a war of attrition. So yeah, there's a lot of luck going on out there. Hell Mark Andre, Bergeron doesn't drive that guy into, into Dwayne Rolesen and the orders have another Stanley Cup, right? Bad luck.

6:18Maybe, yeah. Maybe, maybe, maybe, yeah. Probably possibly, possibly, yeah, possibly. Um, the, uh, the green and gold, of course, us looking like it's going to be a big crowd, 30,000 plus again on, on Saturday. They've, uh, you know, today that the big focus was, you know, their first down efficiency, that's what they focused on for, for many weeks, their red zone play scoring touchdowns was brutal, but it's not anymore. They were four for four. I think they're 14 of their last 16 or something or 12 of the last 14. I have to double check it. But they've been very effective now in the red zone. And so I look at it and to me, the big thing to watch for, A, there's two things, the right tackle Jordan Murray's out. So Cooper comes in against arguably the best rush tandem in the CFLs. It's, it's, so that's going to be a challenge. But what can their play calling do to get them in first and short more often? They were second and long 16 times and 11 of them were 10 yards or more. Yeah. Well, the first thing I see is

7:23their run game on first down is wholly ineffective. You know, when they're trying to, I mean, I get it, you know, my run of the ball on first down once the while, but they're getting like minus one yard, one yard, zero yards, right? To me, if you went back and looked at all those second and longs that you're stating there, how many of them started with a run play on first down? Yeah. I don't know the number, but a whole bunch. So one of the big mysteries for me is Justin Rankin. He can be, he has so much success. And then he can go along stretches where he's not even getting three or four yards on a rush. He's getting like one yard or zero yards or minus yards. It's really feast or famine with Rankin or he has one really big quarter in a game, but they don't have a run game for the other three quarters. You know, that's that's kind of the mystery for me and the on the Ox Run game. It's not when it's good, it's great, but it is far, far

8:25from consistent. Yes, that is that is fair. I think to say that. And like there's lots of time spec like he's getting the ball and there's guys riding his face like, you know, you look at someone. Yeah, some of his best runs this year have come when he makes guys miss, right? And and that's obviously, you know, that's great, but you can't rely on it all the time. You do need to open up some lanes for a guy. I think is leak. No, he's done. He's on the sixth game. Oh, he's on the side. But they, but they brought Shondaric Powell came in and he basically, I thought was the was the, was the energizer, buddy, for their offense on that one series got them really going. And after that, their offense didn't look back. Yeah. So I mean, they still have two quality running backs here. And you know what? If you don't feel like you can hand the ball off and have success, if that's what we think, you could still get the ball in those guys's hands. Like that past rush, Congress coming at you, it's just built for a screen pass. It's built for a, you know,

9:25a play in the past to the flat. Like you can still get the ball in rank as hands in Powell's hands. It doesn't have to be a straight handoff. No, that is a, that is very true. Mark Spector joins us here on sports 14 40 spec a few weeks ago when the playoff race looked like, okay, we're in a September. Now I guess it's 10 days. You're like, okay, you know what? Somebody's just got to get hot. Well, now we're at September 10th. And nobody's getting hot Cleveland's one game over 500 Toronto's one game on her Texas. Just blew a three nothing lead. There's 15 games remaining. If you went nine and six, that probably gets you in the playoffs spot at the rate they're going. Is that what you're thinking? Nine and six? Yeah, honestly, I think it could. Like there's no one shown the ability to have an extended run here in September of any of these teams. Oh no, it's been a turtle race, you know, and now two of them play each other. Where is Baltimore is a little bit back, right? I'm not like that. Well, the Baltimore is two games,

10:25two games back of Toronto, three games back at Cleveland. Right. There you go. So two of them are playing each other here. If somebody can, you know, if the Jays can put Baltimore on the rear view mirror here, they can win two out of three. The series is in Toronto. But yeah, listen, hey, listen, it's a long baseball is a long season and we're 140 games or whatever we are into 162 games season. If you've been playing five 25 ball for 140 games and all those teams have, you know, or fly basically they've been playing 500 balls, what they've been playing. Yeah. And what world do you think you're going to play 750 ball for the last 20 games? Like you're a 500 team. There's a group Jason of 500 teams. Yeah. All battling for that last wild card. That's what they all are. They're all 500 teams, man. They're okay. They're not bad. They're not that good. They're in the middle. So sure, give me, this is like a horse race. Give me a good stretch

11:27run for any of those teams and you're going to grab that wild card because it's not, it's a bit of a turtle derby. It's a derby full of 500 teams, man. Just regular average teams. Yeah. No, that's fair. And it's a it's it's someone entertaining to watch because like they find right now, they're usually you know, down the stretch, you're finding ways to win. These teams are finding ways to lose. Like you look at the J's in Oakland and some of their, you know, defensive miscues and inability to just ground the ball into the into the dirt again. And it's almost comedic right now. But the thing is whoever gets in plays Houston in the first round and you know what Houston's record is right now, spec. It's the same as Cleveland's. So it's not like you're going to be playing another good like you're not playing a dumbed. Actually, I should they won today. So they're, they're they're ahead of Cleveland by one game. They're 75 and 72, one extra win, right? Like whatever. Yeah, it's based the 500 team. Yeah. Yeah. So now even the white socks, whoever

12:30finishes second and third because they both only have 75 wins. You were the six seed are getting a better matchup than the both socks of the Yankees are because they're going to face each other. Now if I'm the J's, I mean, I just got to get in. I got Dylan Seas if I hope that I can shape my rotation because the first series is the best of five, right? So so best of three or best of five. I thought the first one is best of, who is it? Best of three might be that me then we double check. I think it's the best of three and I think they're all in the same town. I think the way the whole yeah, yeah, the all the three are all like when you're the wall card. Yeah, like Toronto be on the road. Okay, I got Dylan Seas for one of those. I think I can win that game. I don't care who I'm playing and I don't know if Trey is Savage is coming back here. I know he's supposed to be throwing both pants this week. Yeah, yeah. If

13:33I agree, lost spec there. So all of a sudden is volume cut out. So see where it goes. When you look at the at that race, yeah, because it goes three, five, seven, seven is how it how it works. So you three hosts six four hosts five all the games that they're ballpark and then you get into the DS and then the CS and then of course the the world series. And I think that now Houston, obviously, anybody who has home field advantage is still better, but Houston funny enough, they don't even have a winning record at home this year. They're 37 and 38. They're four games above 500 on the road, but they're under 500 at home. Now Chicago, who's currently tied with you, they're actually way better at home. They're 43 and 30. They're pretty good at home. So inspects back with us now. So it is it is walk is Houston with their win. Now they're tied with Chicago win win. Chicago has two games in hand, but that means they and they're and they got

14:37to play tonight. So they're playing the pirates. So maybe the win. But you mentioned Seas, like obviously he's big. Soriano's great. Right. If you have those guys one, two spec, that's ideally what you want. Yeah. And like I say, I'm a huge fan of trade you savage. I love the way he pitches. And I know he's been hurt. So it's been a wild card here. I get it. But if he can get healthy and maybe get a starter to win this guy like I think he's their second best pitcher behind CS, my opinions are starter. So listen, pitching wins in the fall. Come October, September, October is pitching in defense. And the J's have pitching looks like it looks like Vlad. He gave us about four games in a row where he was good. And now he's back to not be oh god, buddy. It's painful watching him at the plate right now. painful watching him again. That is that season's been in the dumper and it ain't coming out by the looks of it. No, no, you just said, Hey, if you're a team that's played 140 games and you've been

15:38500 team, you know, it's suddenly like I know everybody's whole been glad he can turn on. You know what it looks like? The orders, right? They thought they were going to turn it on last year in the playoffs. Right? And they got hurt. So that's part of it. But still they never found their ground. And that's why to end this spec, you went going back to your original point. I agree at 1000%. The them to win the the Pacific this year is to me, not nothing's a foregone conclusion. But I think it's a very good chance because a, they know they realize last year that they kind of slept walks through parts of that season. No question about it. And they will want to be much better. And so they'll do that to start the year this year. Well, they've never won the division. Like they haven't won a division since it was the smith division. 1987. 1987. So I would think that that's a very reasonable goal. You know, Vegas, let's see what happens with Vegas. They played deep into the summer. The rest of this division. Remember, this was the

16:39worst division in hockey last year. And you know, San Jose is going to be better. I'm not sure if Anaheim will be better. Calgary is not good at all. Vancouver's worse. Right? And Seattle, Seattle. This isn't a very good division. Jason, you know, are the Kings better? I don't know if the Kings are better. They had not with the Fiala news today. That's not good. Oh, I didn't hear the news. What happened? Oh, Fiala is he's having some complications from his surgery when he got hurt in the Olympics. And now he's not going to partake in training camp and they're going to get an assessment on how long he's out later. So I don't think the Kings are the Kings don't scare me a whole bunch. No, no, no one in the Pacific does. San Jose might finish third, but there's still not a, I don't think they're contentory yet. They're not a contender yet. And to be honest, unless something changes, the orders of handle Vegas head to head over the last three years exceptionally well. So the table set is, I would say to you that if this team is planning on accomplishing what it's trying to accomplish, one of the stepping stones is to win this division. Show me you can

How different is it for him? Yeah, very excited. You know, those breaks always give you great time to to reflect on things and actually, you know, work on some things. And yeah, it's nice to be back here.

19:45It's nice to be around the guys again. And obviously there's some fresh vibes around here and you know, new coaching staff. So excited. Does he think fatigue? Was it all a factor last year after two consecutive runs to the cup? Well, I'm sure that's always the fact the factor, you know, played a lot of hockey over the last little couple of years. And you can see it, you know, with the panthers a little bit to, you know, injuries, injuries start to be in. So certainly it was a factor injuries didn't help us late in the season, but maybe this summer, who came at the right time. It was also asked about, you know, line continuity. Does it matter? Does he think they'll be more of it this year? I think that I do expect a little bit more of it this year. I do however think that, you know, with the way our team is built, we will always have that shuffle going on a little bit.

20:49You know, it might be a little less this year, but that's more of a coaching question probably than anything. But yeah, we'll see what what Bob's and the coaching staff has in mind. I think and I've got some compiling it right now, but I'll have some numbers next week, where I think one of the most over discussed topic is line combinations. And I'll explain it in more in detail next week, but I just think that at times is one. He was also asked about, you know, Freddie Anderson, Tristan Jari, Devon Levi, and, you know, the confidence of the group and their goal tenders. Yeah, very confident. I think both of them have looked great so far. Both of them seem like, you know, they put in the work and obviously, excited to get Freddie in the mix as well. And hopefully he can get healthy as soon as possible. I think we'll have three goalies that are reliable and that we can trust.

21:54It's always good. Was there anything specifically that he was able to do this summer on an off the ice that he didn't do the last two years? Well, I think it's just time, right? Like, like you're able to really work on on your cardio, you know, when you're working out for, when you have six weeks, seven weeks to get your cardio back up and running, there's just not enough time really. So when you have four months, you know, you can ramp it up and you can properly plan out your summer and map out your summer and not kind of just go on the fly as it comes. So again, short summers are a great sign. We want more short summers, but, you know, this one might might have came at the right time. It's very possible. You got to take it if it's an advantage that it only means it's advantage. If you take it, if you use it to your benefit, right? Last year, they were never able to really get any sort of consistent momentum. It took them until game 74 to win three games in a row.

23:00How do they ensure that this year they find a foundation in their game earlier? Well, I think we just have to understand that, you know, this is where you build your game for games 83 and on, right? Like these, you know, winning environments and these winning streaks and exactly knowing what the perfect game for you as a team looks like, you have to create that over the 82 games. And I don't think we did that at all last season. I don't think that we ever really figured out what our A game really is. And on top of that, we weren't able to sustain it. And that's going to be our number one pass in regular season. They have a clear focus. That's the one thing I'm noticed out of all of this is there's clearly a clear focus. So there you go. That was in the room with Leon dry settle. Now we're going to step out to a linebacker in Nick Anderson and the and the green and gold and Nick Anderson coming off

24:03his best game in the season. 12 tackles. You know, how to huge sack in that game. Take took part in turnovers. And it was really, I thought that was that was as good as Nick Anderson has played in quite a while for me. I thought he was flying. He was he was around the ball. He was funneling to the ball, maybe better than ever. And when that happens for your mental linebacker, it's going to help your defense. No question. So caught up with Elks linebacker Nick Anderson coming off a huge week. 12 tackles huge sack interception kind of did it all in a big game. And you know, for a guy who has high expectations, how important is it for you? Are you feeling like you're getting back to the level that you feel you can be at every game? For sure, man, I feel like one of my goals since I've gotten to this league is to just always be better each and every time that I step on the field than my last performance on. And so even though I had, you know, career, hard day last week, I'm trying to repeat that and even better this week. When you're in a game like that as a defensive player, like I don't receivers talk about

25:06sometimes I just want the ball. I want the ball as a tackler. You just like, I want the guys to come to me. Like how does your confidence, you know, work in a game like that as a defensive player when it seems like you're always around the ball. Just over all just doing my job and running to the ball. That was the point of emphasis that I've really put on myself the past couple of weeks, especially being out those six weeks and losing a little bit of conditioning. And practice, I just maintain the ball every single play. And so, you know, that's what happens when you practice the way that you play. You know, you get out there on the field and you just always show up in the camera around a football. Even part of the defense for a few years, clearly this is the best defense of being a part of. As a guy who's right in the middle of it, literally and figuratively, what is it that makes this defense so good right now? Because we've seen it times when you guys shut it down, like literally don't give up anything. Just the continuity of the defense overall, we're a close-knit group. Everybody really genuinely loves everybody's mentality with each other off the field and outside of the facility. I mean, just we're a defense built off resiliency. We're a defense that doesn't blink. We're in the face of adversity. We don't really

26:10pal it when things don't go well offensively. We just show up and do our job and hold each other accountable and the proof is in the put in the man. That's why we're able to execute weekend and week out. We've been part of this rematch before. So, you know, the opportunity here to sweep it and clinch a playoff spot, which I know it's goal number one for the team. Now, it's a big important game. What's your approach when you're playing the same team and back-to-back games? Do you feel there's an advantage at all defensively or offensively? Um, just overall, you got to focus more on your mistakes because they've got the same film too. So, you're just going back and saying, okay, yeah, we won the game. But let's, you know, go into it looking at the plays that we did give up because that's what they're looking to come and attack us with this upcoming week. But I don't, you know, I don't mind playing teams back-to-back. I feel like if anything is harder to play the team the second time around because y'all just played each other and everybody making adjustments. But it's just one of those things we got to show up and do our job on the XQ on the high level and we'll be victorious. As one of the leaders of the team, Nick, we've seen lots of guys come in. It doesn't matter if it's a DB, a linebacker, a receiver. Lots of guys are making big impacts

27:14early on. The latest was power on the offensive side. You really added some juice to an offense that was pretty stagnant and had some decent returns. What do you attribute that to? And do you sense that as a player like that there's, it doesn't matter who the guy is, but if he comes in here, we expect the guy to be a baller. I feel like every championship team I've been on, and you know, it took everybody in the building. So shout out to management for getting guys in the building that are able to come in and learn from the coaches and be able to execute on such a short notice. Shout out to the coaches for being able to prepare those guys. And then shout out to the Vets. It's a lot of Vets. Me, myself, included when I got hurt, I had to get DJ ready for the game. So just having that veteran presence of a guy that is un-selfish and saying, okay, I'm not playing, but I can do my role in preparing the guy that it is. That's what we have when his defense managed. Shout out to Paul. Yeah, he came in and he had a good game. I mean, just looking at his work ethic, you know, he dropped a couple of points. He's been out here every morning catching points on me. So I feel like that just shows just the reality of our team. Guys just trying to get better each and every week. Man, trying to go win or every day in our

28:16preparation so that we can continue to win and continue to get to our goal. Walk me through the hit. I'm sure you know what you want. I'm talking about. I'm, I don't seem to hesitate a little bit. Because as a, as a tackler, you do have to commit and you're expecting quarterbacks to, to slow down, but can you kind of walk us through what you're seeing in that, in that time and, and how split seconded a decision it is to make that to either light up or continue on? For sure. Just to break it down, I feel like a lot of people don't really understand the new answers that we have to go through. Even pre-snap before the ball is even snapped on our responsibilities. And so that play I had a DJ Meals and Man coverage. I thought he was going to stay in and he burst down the field. So I took off running, covering him. And I looked back to running had, you know, made one and two, then three defenders missed and he was in a full straw towards me. So I braised and, you know, had every intent of, you know, making a tackle and he's just suddenly, you know, dropped to his knees in front of me. But I'm just glad he didn't get hurt.

29:17I never wanted to be labeled as a dirty player or a bad player. It is not my MO. Just was trying to secure a tackle on a very athletic quarterback on me. He just happened to fall in front of me. But glad that he got up, walked off me and him, zoked about it after the game. He said he polished it a little bit earlier. But that's just one of the things that, you know, I hope that the lead kind of, you know, does is really educate the quarterback. So not just for our safety, but for their safety and just having like a radius to know, like, okay, defenders are swarming, trying to give me down, you know, I need to give myself up a little bit sooner. But, you know, I just got one of the things that, you know, I got to do, I got to keep my head out of it on that play because it looks scary when you slow it down and I never want to hurt anybody. But yeah, it's just something to learn from both sides. Nick Anderson. And he's going to get fine for that hit. Conds hasn't come out, but I can tell you 100% that he will be receiving a fine for that play. I think the announcement comes out tomorrow probably. 31:27That's who showed up at the Labor Day rematch at Commonwealth Stadium last year. In 2003, 62,444 people packed that place. The Elks shut out Calgary 38 to nothing. The city was electric. Now we're drawing less than half that crowd. And here's what makes this interesting. The Edmonton Elks are winning. They beat Calgary on Labor Day. 38 to 28. They won the rematch in 2023.
