1:02Welcome to the March 11th, 2026 edition of the Jetset noon podcast. I'm cam poichers co-host of Jetset noon alongside Jim Toath where we broadcast live every single weekday on 680 CJOB live from downtown Winnipeg. How are we talking everything to do with the Winnipeg Jets? And they were certainly taken out to the woods. A kind of live center on Tuesday night, falling for one to the Anaheim ducks. It was ugly, even more concerning than the score. It was Winnipeg managing just 13 shots on goal while Anaheim peppered them with 34 simply put a simply put a performance like that can't happen again if the Jets hope to bring playoff hockey back to downtown Winnipeg this spring. So what exactly went wrong besides everything? Jets studio host Kelly Moore joins the program to share his thoughts as we celebrate our 80th birthday here on 680 CJOB radio. All that and more on today's edition of Jetset noon.

She will call you out. But it's an anniversary to me because so an anniversary is something like is a marriage or a mark of achievement. A birthday is like, but I guess if the radio station was born in 1946. Yeah, but it was sort of made. So I think it's an anniversary. But Sarah loves birthdays. She does. Yeah. And you know what? The last time the Jets won, which was on Saturday. Saturday. Yeah. She was too fistine again. And we all know that whenever she's at a game with a drink in both hands, the Jets win. 6:25That is him. I thought he took his hey Rich. I thought. Wow. Did you see that? Richard Clutchett. Did you see what he did? He got away with that. In this day and age of surveillance. That's got to be somewhere. Folks, I can't even tell you what he just did. I think Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau did that once. And it did not go over well then. It is not going over well. No, we're not liking that. Anyway, I got to give a shout out to Ken Hots. He sent a photo. So Ken is such a die hard when to pick Jets fan. He went on a second trip to Antarctica. And he brought his Jetspuck with him. And he got a photo with his Jetspuck and a penguin. An actual Antarctic penguin down in Denko Island. I think that's how it's pronounced. And it actually is a photo that you should put it on on social media. I will. I will repost it.

7:26The penguin doesn't have its fin. Is it a fin or a wing around the park? It's a wing. But it's walking up to the puck that he left off. It's a curious penguin. So thanks so much for that, Ken. It's right by my, I'm going to have it right by my desk. I've taken control of it. Jim didn't win the, and it was we had Fisticuffs to decide who was going to get it. And I ended it up on top. So I will keep the, I'm going to keep the penguins right by my desk. So Ken, I really appreciate that. It's really awesome. Thanks, Ken. It was great to be to do that. And thanks for thinking about us. So Jim, what's there to say about last night and the game against the Anaheim ducks? Not much. I could, you know what? It's like, usually I have lots of stuff to say. And I'm going through in my head. One, okay, what am I going to talk about on today on the show? I don't know what else is there is to say that. Otherwise, it was just a, it was just a, it was a disaster. It was, the game was a, was a, was an essentially a total disaster. Yeah, it's, you know, Cam, it's interesting. I was listening to Dwayne Gilowoy Chuck and, and watching that game and, and shot, outshot 28 to seven after two periods. Seven shots on that. For a team that's fighting for its life is, is inexcusable in my mind.

8:30I like it. To me, and this, a lot of people are going to push back on this, and that's fine. I understand that it wasn't a lack of effort. It was a lack of execution once again. It was like, everything they did and everything they tried just wasn't there. The passes were off. It just executed. And that to me is focused, right? And so Dwayne Gilowoy checked the hockey analyst last night, drove into this. He goes, I'm not surprised by this result. And he said, what's lost in the 11 and 4 and 5 pre and post Olympic break run. The points in six games up until last night is the pressure that's on these guys, right? And so they're rolling along. They're getting points or taking a one game at a time. Then you have a game like that where it's just, he feels the mental fatigue and pressure of the, the game came on. And they were just, you know, not as sharp, not as second, second, second guessing a lot. Trying to make plays that weren't there that if they were instant quicker. And he said, nobody's talking about, well, he, I'm paraphrased. Yeah, it was referencing the idea of the mental grind the team is on in order to get in. And so, you know, the first period happens. They put, they put themselves in that position,

9:30by the way. They, they, they played, they put themselves in the position that they're involved in in this sort of crisis. Yes. So the pressure that comes with that, though, is what he was trying to acknowledge on this game. I'll be more interested in the Rangers game. If this happens again, or even to a slider extent of what we saw last night, then I'm like, this is just unacceptable. But I understood what he was trying to say about, you know, you came out, you got these points, you're going over time, even when you go over time, you get a point. It's disappointing because you didn't get to. You're so desperate. The, the mental aspect of that, you know, Scott or Neil was here this morning to help us celebrate the 80th anniversary. He was on with the start and, and, you know, he's going to practice. It's not an optional practice, say, which it was prior to last night's effort. They're going to get back at it. But I took a lot of heed from, from what, you know, Dwayne Gilowiczek was saying about is they're not going to come out and execute and be, you know, now his point was is that's why they were, I guess, that bad. Like it wasn't like a few things were off and they just didn't have it and they lost four two. It was, it was gone. Everything was out of them because it, maybe it was

10:34the fact that we got to win this game and everything's on the line. But I, you know, that being said, I'm not trying to make excuses at all. It's an inexcusable effort in the situation they're in. And the situation they're in is you can't have one of these. That was a 50 50 game in my mind. And when you took a one nothing lead to give up three goals at a minute, 44 just off mental errors and lack of execution of getting a puck out of his own and stuff like that. Those are the little things cam that when you're in this desperate mode, I would focus on more than ever. Don't focus on the face off draw to get a shot on net and then pound to put the puck in the net. Focus on the simple plays of getting the puck out of his own. If you do that, the rest will come. But you have to stay ultra focused on that because of the situation. Yeah. And the reality is is by having all those lapses and that lack of execution. I'm going to agree with you right now, Jim, about the effort. I don't think it was an effort thing. I mean, maybe they perhaps they were trying too hard. I think that may be more of a reason why they ended up having the game that they ended up having. But the thing is I agree with everything that you said as well as now the task is harder.

11:41By putting together effort like that, I mean, how many more games can they lose three? You three games against Colorado still to come this month. You have that other game against Vegas here. And you know, I know that the Jets have been a little bit better against Vegas recently, but they're still struggling mightily to take on a team that teams in these positions here. But they just had no answers. And it felt like to me that it was it was like a snowball rolling downhill, picking up speed and getting larger and larger and larger as that game went along. And I know there was a minute and 44 seconds where they coughed up those three goals, but it seemed like a foregone conclusion. They weren't generating as much. And you know what also, Jim, you know, the depth has been a little bit better over the last little bit. But when you have a game like you had last night from the top line and the ducks essentially control them. Yeah, they're not, you know, Gabriel Vellardi doesn't have a shot on gold. Mark Shifley doesn't have a shot on goal. Kyle Connor doesn't have a shot on goal. This is what happens to this team when those guys aren't going. The it's it's that simple. They didn't generate. There was no high danger chances or opportunities.

12:44And and they just and they had lots of turnovers from some young guys. Some of the guys that they're working into line up here. And this is what it adds up to. Connor Hellerbach was good. The Connor Hellerbach was outstanding. I really kept them in. It could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for Connor Hellerbach. But I'm with you. Like the top line, they can't be good every night. They can't be great every night. They can't be good every night. How good has Mark Shifley been the last night? I shouldn't say that. They are good most nights. But they are going to have the odd game. And last night was the odd game where they just couldn't get anything going for themselves. And then the secondary scoring and all that too. So you know what? In the grams, the bigger picture of last night's game is the things that have plagued this team all year, the lack of scoring, the depth, everything like that. What was what was unable to play. They weren't playing quick. I mean, it's like they fed. I thought the first half of the period they looked okay. And then it just fell apart. And then the ducks by the end of that first period, the ducks showed how they can use speed and transition. And Scott O'Neill said that on the post game show yesterday on six ECG OB that he said like that when this team goes, they all go.

13:46It's not just one or two forwards. It's both the fence winner gone as well. And they were just circulating. Wasn't making it up. Oh, here comes Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau right now with the bird. Yeah. Hi, Richard. He's a total denial denial. Yeah. That wasn't me. Unfortunately, there's surveillance everywhere. We've been doing stories on this. Yeah. Exactly. There's a video everywhere going. This is our horrific and the children had to see that. Fortunately, we get a winner. Yes, we certainly did it. That is Mauricio Elvarez. Mauricio. Congratulations. You knew that it was Nick Antropoff and Pierre Luke Dubois. Both were 80 for the Winnipeg Jet. 15:55odds Jim Toath as of this morning according to hockey stats calm. They would right now they're in their sixth last. So their chance at the first overall pick right now is 5.7%. That's it, right? Vancouver is at 25.1% in first. Second is Calgary 12.1. Third is Chicago at 11.4. The Rangers are fourth at 8.9 St. Louis at 7.8. So yeah the mushy middle but that's lower right. So I mean the big thing is is like Scott or Neal said that every other team lost last night. So if you even get a point and it could be three down. I get all that but that it's different if you lose that 4-3 with an empty neck or 4-2 with an empty neck goal right. It's the fact that you just you didn't have it. So that's why I'm fascinated by Thursday nights game against the Rangers is just okay if that is really one and done what do you have against the Rangers and then what do you have against Colorado on Saturday. 21:15there for who wasn't out on the ice yeah but that's what I've got a tab down to I'm just watching the lights of Dylan Tampers the Brad Labber he got was in and Jacob Bryson that Jessica Eric Connery and a little post-practice to that again um Kelly it's the 80th anniversary of 680 cjob what is what is today not for all 80 of them before you even start play Chris we covered where I was going we covered that in the first segment Kelly I think it was 12 and I heard you 80 years for this institution here in the in the city Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba you're not from here you're from BC the Abbott'sford Mission Area if I'm not mistaken am I am I am I incorrect in that Kelly well you're totally bang on went to high school in Nixon and then got my first job in radio in Kamloops as an eight while I guess I was 18 when I got hired

22:18but 19 when I started at radio and L yeah I mean that was one of my first my first jobs not in Kamloops we were sister stations in merit but regardless um so when did you first find out about 680 cjob wasn't when you were applying for for jobs and then maybe speak about what the station and and uh has meant to you over the years yeah I I never applied for jobs while I was in Kamloops uh just to I never wanted to leave Kamloops I loved it there uh but my passion was to do hockey at the NHL level so uh when there was an opening that became available with cjob I think I was told there were 85 applicants to succeed Kurt Kielbach as the radio voice of the Jets and I was extremely fortunate to be the eventual player who the eventual person rather who was selected and it it has been just a wonderful wonderful two tours of duty the first go round I was here for about 12 and a half years from 94 through 2006 and then came back when the Jets

23:21returned in 2011 so I have spent half of my almost 50 year career and radio at this radio station and uh one more than half of it and the thing that has stood out for me the most over uh by 32 years with the five-year hiatus spent in Winnipeg is uh the people uh our listeners they are absolutely fantastic they hold our feet to the fire uh to be as good as we can be uh but they are also tremendously loyal and supportive and uh that is something that will always stick with me and really the relationship between cjob and hockey Kelly you would know more better no no matter what the hockey you know it's always been right there at the forefront I mean the bombers of course as well and and really how local minor sports are covered everything like that but there's a long time tradition of 680 cjob with sports and in particular with hockey and and with the organization right whether it was moves whether it was Jets 1 2.0 got true north sports and entertainment

24:27uh gym and mcjob about a wonderful relationship over a number of years now and I'm glad that uh you know that it's it's continuing uh since we were able to retain the Jets play by playwrights and uh I continue to bring that program the only other thing I would add is that the one thing at least I'm particularly proud of and I inherited this from Bob Irving but that is our coverage of local sports at the amateur level whether it's university whether it's junior whether it's high school we have always maintained a strong link to local and amateur sports in this city and province uh that that will never change uh the the younger people uh you know I'm clearly on the back nine some might even say you've already got to the 19 hole but uh I know that with the people that we have uh within our midst uh that that will continue yeah no that's for sure Kelly I'll carry

25:28that on I promise um so about last night's game uh when to you did things start to really go off the rails and um uh against the ducks shortly after old Canada well you know Kelly I was just thinking about what Scott or Neil was saying before the game and I just saw it happen time and time and time again was it was just they didn't Jets didn't manage the puck well and the ducks made them pay they just turned they turned it up by so quickly and it's it's like one of those things where it's like he said it's not like they weren't coached they weren't coached to not do what happened but they just could they had no answers for the ducks throughout the night no they did not and and I particularly didn't think the ducks were at the top of air game either until the first time out the shot attempts uh combined were seven uh uh at about the six minute mark of the six to seven minute mark of the first period uh so neither team was really putting on that much pressure but Anaheim started to find their game coming out of that first time out and then really rubbed it up

26:32going into uh you know the final six or seven minutes of the period that's where Conor hella Buck had to be really really good and when Morgan Barron scored it was clearly against the grain of playing in the intermission just uh Dwayne and Gilawaii Chuck and I were talking about it you know Anaheim 49 first period goals 70 now 78 in the second period after adding three more on so you know we knew the Jets weren't out of the uh out of hot water uh despite surviving that first period and then there was uh that minute and 44 seconds where Anaheim was able to uh just take advantage of what a big sloppiness and really once it became three one you never ever have the sense because of how Anaheim was playing and because of how the Jets were struggling how about there was going to be a comeback i wanted to ask about Dwayne Gilawaii Chuck's comments i thought they're pretty insightful Kelly about when you're in this situation of that they're in that a game like this is kind of like he said i wasn't surprised by it just given the the mental

27:36aspect of the situation the team is in and what's at stake and and and such a high level not just game to game right now but period to period right like if if you have a bad period right this team mentally is is in the grind of it right and and i thought that was a fascinating take from a former coach yeah it it manifests itself for sure with the extreme pressure you're feeling and you know it's no different than in real life uh when the pressure ramps up and you know you have to produce there are one of two ways that you can uh base that and it is almost impossible to be able to come up with the solution or the answer every single time and again it was not one or two people i mean the number one line had a real real bad night they've been so good through the first three games of this homestand but uh mercilessly Kyle Conner and Gabe Bullardy uh for a while in an Alec bottle they just did not have it last night but they weren't the only ones uh uh up and down the line up other than Conner hella buck uh it was a bad here day

28:39at the office and if the jet did not dock themselves into this corner you know you could at least say okay fine you know they'd add six pretty good games so they were maybe due for a bit of a stinker but they they are just not in that situation to be able to do that and then the comfort is and i know all you get from looking back at the sore neck but you know if they had some how been able to come up with a great performance last night Seattle losing at home again last night the national it'll only be looking at a three point deficit today uh so there's uh another sure what a could a moment and they just don't have a whole lot of wiggle room but have to absorb too many more of those and then on the 680 cjb post game show and when you guys are playing comments from from Scott or Neil yesterday that that that's the thing that's that seemed to me at least that stung him the most was the fact that it was it was a lost opportunity for them to climb um i want to ask you also about some more comments from colper feddie was on the post game show with you yesterday kelly um he said it they had to flush this is a game they got a flush

29:40do you agree with that i remember Rick bonus a number of years ago it says no no no no we don't let games like that go we don't flush anything um what do you think do you do you agree is this is this a game they got a they got to go over extensively or is this is one they got to throw in the garbage can well you flush it but your next game performance will also be an indicator how you went about that and and you know it's no different cam that you or i have a bad sports well what are you going to do are you going to commit your way to over that until you go on here the next time or are you going to say okay i understand uh that i did not treat the listeners to the level of expertise and uh performance that they deserve so i'm going to do it on the next opportunity i get and and that's what these guys have to do uh you that's what i say all you get from looking back at the soreness you cannot do anything about what happened last night other than to bring a whole level of performance to the table tomorrow not again for New York Rangers
