About this episode
Apparently, we’re The Ops for supporting bipartisan politics...
On last week’s show, NLP defended House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries after he met with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. As a leader, you have to talk to the other side.
Many of y’all were calling NLP “bought and sold,” “AIPAC,” etc., and others had more serious critiques. We’ll respond to all.
Join hosts Angela Rye and Bakari Sellers for a conversation about political tactics and bi-partisanship.

Native Lam pod is a production of I Heart Radio and partnership with Reason Choice Media. Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome. Since we're in a hot seat, I didn't want to allow Angela Rye to not get somebody's heat, too. Welcome to our mini pod where we give you a few minutes on some of the things that have been happening and going on. But we last we we talked about a came Jeffries and a came Jeffries meeting with Jared Kushner.
And I don't know if y'all follow what Jordan Nick and Lolo be putting up on Instagram. But everybody did not like our take on that. In fact, it's probably 90 10 and more so they just didn't like you'll take Angela. But here we are. We're talking about the fact of bipartisanship. When is it okay to work with people? When is it not okay? Like, how does this how does this work? When you have somebody like Donald Trump, who people say is in the realm of fascism. We know the racism. We know the white supremacy. We know the things that they're doing to make our lives miserable. So when we take back the house and maybe even the Senate, what do you expect your leadership to do with somebody like this in a white house other than just hold them accountable? I guess that's the question. Well, you know, first beat. Let me just say, um. What is astonishing to me is the the okay, let me back up. So they are mad at my comment. For saying that, you know, you're supposed to meet with people.
I hear some people saying they felt like what I was saying was condescending. Like nobody asked me to educate them on how the process works, right? The other part was. Um, these allegations that we are bought and sold by APEC. I want to be clear with you all. I've said it on the show a gazillion times. I don't do anything with APEC. I went on an APEC trip when I worked on Capitol Hill. I spaz the f*** out at the end of the trip. Sorry, Nick. I spaz the F out at the end of the trip. And they kicked me off the list. Like I don't even get. APEC emails. And if you listen to our show at all and not just listen to clips, you'll hear. Where I've said that they have outsized influence on our political process. I don't think any pack any, whether it's a public affairs committee or a political action committee should have any influence like this on our races and on our politics. Um, if you knew better, you would know that Corey Bush was someone I was supporting against Wesley Bell every time we did a whole podcast on that.
Now what the car's relationship is with APEC, he can talk about on his own. I can yield to you right here, B, or I can keep going on my points. I can keep going. I'm going to I got some stuff to say anyways. I go ahead. Okay. So car is the heat in his stuff up. So here's what I will also say. I present the fact that based on my experience, where I worked, how I worked and what I know about the hill. It doesn't have spaciousness on a podcast that is mine. Of course I can talk about that where I think I feel flat B is, um, in stating this is how things that normally work. Right. This is the way that things typically work. We are not in typical or normal times. I say that all the time on the podcast. So I do actually really appreciate that feedback y'all. I think what I will also say is that there is this bridge to kind of go around how the meeting happened, how we found out about the meeting. And what and how came response to the meeting.
I think that all three of those things are problematic. And I conceded all those points. If you listened to the whole show, but in clip culture. We clip it over. Recall we did. We didn't clip it. But let me say this. Just because you clip something doesn't mean that you expect that that to be the full some conversation. You expect that that draws people in to a conversation and to hear the whole thing. Our podcast is not flat. Right. It's full of nuances and winding turns and all that. And we invite you all into this conversation because we want to have a place where we don't just have a flat. Analysis where we can hear all of these sides and nuances and hopefully in a way that's not in a constant rage. We say welcome home y'all because we want this to be a safe space for us and for y'all. But if you have decided to write us off based on where you think our political legions is in it. Are and who we stand with and what this crazy. How came yes he is my friend. I've known him since before he joined the house.
Have a great amount of respect for him. Don't agree with him tactically on a lot right now. Don't agree with him strategically on a lot right now. Do I want to see him become the speaker. Yes. But I also want to see him make some commitments to black folks. Two people who are going above and beyond to vote for this party. And so I think that there are some things that he needs to do it. Honestly, I think he will do them. But I think that the way we go about it, like we started attack. We don't give him the same grace that let's say mom Donnie had when he went to go meet with Donald Trump. People's other response wasn't I'm sure you saw this. Well, Jared Kushner isn't in the administration. Yeah. According to who he's not paid by taxpayers, but he is absolutely a part of this administration. And I don't know if you knew this, but I just got this out. How came and Jared Kushner went to law school together. Yeah. I mean, so I mean, that was the number one thing that I got was like, why are you meeting with somebody who's not a part of the administration. And when you talked to anybody in Washington, DC, that's how you the first thing is. The only two people you can talk to in the administration are Jared Kushner and Susie Wiles.
Those are and that's the chief of staff. Those are the people who have a level head who can make things go around. I like how you talked about experience. And let this bot and paid for thing is like an old trope that I don't really pay attention to. Because it is, it's like a, it's a very disrespectful trope that people try to discount things you say without hearing what you say regardless of what it is. But let me talk about my experience real quick. And this is the example I get people. My father was a member of SNCC. I keep that experience. That's that that for me is I stand on those shoulders. When I got elected. When I got elected to the state house, the most powerful man in the Senate was Glenn McConnell. Glenn McConnell owned a Confederate memorabilia store. Right. So backgrounds are vastly different. The way we see the world was vastly different.
But he was the most powerful. He was the president pro-tum of the Senate. We live in South Carolina. It's a legislative state. The government doesn't have much power. That's a whole another conversation. I got my legislative manual. And I began to read about it. I found out he was a Piscopillian. I found out his favorite show was Deal and No Deal. And what I knew was we had things we needed in my county, my district. We needed, we needed a new water system. We needed a library. So we became friends. We didn't vote together. Like we didn't, I didn't, I went out here saying keep the Confederate flag out. I disagreed with him. I, in fact, I probably voted separate and apart from him 99% of the time. Minus those things that just went through based on acclimation. So my point is he put money hundreds of that over a million dollars in the budget for poor people in Denmark, South Carolina. To have a library where we can now go have a meeting center where people can fill out resumes, etc. Because we were able to forge that political relationship. I think those things and reaching beyond the aisle when you can are valuable.
Now I say that also understanding. So please just don't clip one part of it, but also understanding that times are different. Right. And we're living in different times. And the urgency is different. And I do believe that there has to be clear communication. This is my message to a king Jeffries because I want a king Jeffries to be the next speaker of the house as well. But there has to be clear communication. There has to be clear results oriented messaging. And we have to know why you doing stuff because even though 15 years ago, because when I was friends with Glenn McConnell, it was 2006 to 2012. Right time was different. Now you're talking about meeting with Jerry Kushner and Donald Trump's administration. You now cannot just do something and think people will give you the grace that you probably deserve. You have to, and unfortunately that is your responsibility of being an elected official. I always say people being an elected official in a pastor, not only to job, but people expect more from you than they expect from themselves.
You now have to go out and preface it, explain it, explain it again, and tell people why you're doing something. And I think that he missed that opportunity because he may not have valued the same way that a lot of our comment, commenters were valuing the change in times that we're living in today. Right now my mute. I was, I wanted to go through here B2 to, to pull some of the comments that we got. And one of the things that came up was they would have preferred that the conversation be held in public. Somebody said, and I was like, you know what? I actually agree with that. Either a public conversation or a public readout, not just saying that any Trump. Yeah, they can come outside together and just say, just what we talked about. I think that that would have been great. And I think probably would have garnered a little bit more trust. And then there was somebody else who said, um, Oh, no, where did I go? It was, it was saying, I need you to consider this. When you are quote, when you are in leadership, you have to meet, right?
And then the person said, is this adhering to the same set of rules that delivered the White House to Trump, not once but twice? Respectfully former John Lewis staffer who just finished passing out campaign lit in 110 degree, uh, heat in Florida for Angie. And I wanted to shout that out in particular because that's where I started this conversation today, which is, I am the sum total of my experiences. My experience working on the hill, we worked across the aisle. Like the first bill that I ever worked on was a labor negotiation in homeland security with sterling. And I'm shot out to sterling who I recently reached out to just to figure out what we're in the world was he because it was when there was a little more decency in the Republican party. And so sure I can have tremendous blind spots around that. But until the Constitution changes, the president still has to sign bills until law. Do I wish that this MF wasn't the president? Of course. Y'all know that. But we have to figure out a way to play the game. You know, to say what needs to be said to get the bills and the initiatives and the demands and the policy priorities.
The rule to the other side to signature. We have, and it's not just about stopping things like the save act and the other crazy ideology that they're putting on to paper and getting passed. I think that in earnest, those conversations need to happen sooner. And I think one little spoiler alert we might have missed. Is Jared Kushner might ask for that mean because things might not be looking so good for him right now. No, no, no, no, I said that I said the White House. The White House is actually the White House is actually thank you for regurgitating my talking for the White House is actually acknowledge the target away from you, mate. The White House is actually acknowledging that Democrats are front runners now to win back the house. That's first. But, but I think one of the other things that we have to do and I mentioned it, but I'm not sure that I went into detail about it. And it may not require much detail, but we need to talk about like what are and maybe maybe a key needs to talk about this not necessarily us. But we need to talk about what actual bipartisanship has brought us now. I'm not saying be bipartisan on everything.
I'm not saying junk through hoops with everybody. But can Tanya Brown Jackson. Brought by partisan efforts. Yeah, the infrastructure bill was brought by bipartisan action. The chips act was by brought by I mean, they were talking about billions of dollars that have been invested in our communities and the first African American woman appointed to the Supreme Court. So, I mean, there is some benefit. I don't see and what I haven't seen in the comments and maybe I missed it, Angelie. Maybe you can tell me, but what was the downside to the meeting? When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and health captive for nine months. I survived and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart and these are the survivor files. I just remember this low taunting voice next to my ear saying shut up, don't say anything.
Every week, I'm with survivors who lived through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up without a doubt he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled and nearly silenced, but these aren't stories about what's taken from them. Their stories about what it takes to make it out alive, listen to the survivor files with Elizabeth Smart on the I Heart Radio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are a bookshelf and you are for your page are equally important to your personality, welcome home. This is Pro's Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives and anyone who thinks pride and prejudice and love island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
I'm going to have to look up this story. From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. So like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters and that is the Trojan horse, whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place. Listen to Pro's Society on the I Heart Radio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. On the new podcast solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I choose option B. I'm Julie Pinierro and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita trading the pity for possibility.
Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to solita. On the I Heart Radio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? Developers with right wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is high nears and apple etchum. But they weren't just planning houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life.
Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment. God need mental rule and decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bulls***. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test too. They feel like they're standing in opposition to an entire administration. I guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbillies now, did you? Listen to our town on the I Heart Radio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Buy a driver in our cell at least 70% have a phone. Middle school is a different world than the one we grew up in. I'm Dr. Joy and this is therapy for black girls. We spent real time on it in our surviving middle school run. Bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now. So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological chaos happening all this
even though we got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying. And how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. They're belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted. And then they're fitting in. Fitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers sitting down with therapists, cure gains on black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage. You don't have more shorts so you can't do flips. You have one to dress up across your legs. That's the range of this run from screen time to identity to the fathers doing the work at home. You have to get off your device. But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as you're adult in the life to miss out on. This has been our surviving middle school run. Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this. I'm Dr. Joy. Listen to therapy for black girls on the iHeartReneo app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcast.
What was the downside to the meeting? There's a ton. One, the biggest point was people felt like how came Jeffrey should not be in a policy meeting about what should happen with a president signing a bill into law or policy priorities with someone who is not a government employee. I think what folks are struggling to understand just like I'm struggling to understand around talking to people across the aisle to get your policy priorities through is he does not Donald Trump. Donald Trump is violating them. All you miss calls Donald Trump has all types of outside advisors who have more influence than the people who are paid by the feds. That's just what it is and people don't want to accept that but that is the truth. So either we can turn a blind eye and said I'd be like well I'm not going to negotiate with the people or have meetings and conversations with the people who have the most influence on this man. I think the biggest issue beyond that was that they felt like why did he have the meeting and not say anything about it and when I came did finally say something about it he did seem defensive.
So I think that's the other point there are other people in here who were like saying we're bought were paid well by a pack and I was like have you heard a defamation. Because and then they're saying I was trying to intimidate somebody which I'm really not I'm just saying don't connect me I don't want anything to do with a back. So the other thing that came up there's this guy. Kid Cruddy kid Cruddy. He said also Angela you said that he should show that he can broker deals across the political spectrum the base is not interested in facilitating mag a policy objectives like why the hell is that so difficult to understand I'm not either I'm talking about our policy objectives. And I think that the other part is like this is the part that this is the part that people take issue with me I believe it's because the leadership is not just leadership of the base.
And I think that people have a huge disconnect with that because there is something and I want us to tag this in the show notes but the frontliners the democratic front liners are individuals who represent swing. They're not just sitting in the same seat they do not represent base seats this is not. You know Jim clobber and seat is 55% African American where I where I reside in South Carolina right that that is comprised of the base there are people who are in districts that Trump won by six eight points. And if we're going to have leadership right and so I'm reminded that Kim Jeffries is not like he wasn't 2020 in 2018 he was one he was a member right he was one member and he had some leadership roles but he wasn't the leader of the party when you were the leader of the party you don't just represent the base and I think that is what drives people crazy. I also just want to make one point of question I said I came in juror Kushner went to law school together they went to the same law school is what I meant.
I don't know how we thread this needle on this but I can tell you that I know how we thread it I know how we thread it let me just tell it let me just have a king have a king come on the show that's how we throw. I came is always invited to the show I look forward to him coming on I will raise that again with his team you do the same be what I was going to say was I don't know how we thread this needle. For folks around what we shouldn't should not be doing in an environment like this I feel y'all psychologically emotionally I get it but tactically and strategically and logically you still have to get to two thirty five you just do some two eighteen you just do. And until and unless you count the votes it's still the yeas and the nays in the house it's still it's still you know sixty depending on what the measure is in the senate until that changes this is the way you get there now if y'all have an alternative suggestion happy to hear it but all of this like let me tell you what we not going to let me tell you what you can't do until you better not do otherwise you cancel all that that does not get you the math so let's figure out the math I don't agree with.
But I don't agree with. McCarrie is right factually that there are these districts where traditionally the D triple C which is dip the democratic campaign congressional committee. Democratic Democratic campaign committee sorry yeah that's right so I will they will traditionally overspend in districts that are damn Republican Abigail Spanberger was one of those districts I understand trust me the frustration of leaning into peeing. And I'm leaning into people who politically are not close enough to where we need to be I get it and still until we can come up with a better a better candidate recruitment process to get the people in in position that you want whether they're super progressive they don't have a label but they're closer to your politics whatever that is this is the team we have and these are the cards were dealt sixty days out from an election. I don't want to figure that out and figure out how to be fine with that because we have to be singing it needs to be one band one sound singing from the same you know choir him know whatever like we got to be on the same page I like them people neither I don't like Republican like neither that's not my jam but car it might be more you jam as a moderate I'm not moderate at all.
So I'm just saying like I think that it is important I just want to win I but I'm saying when we win and this is the part I think people are also wrestling with when we win. It has to feel like a win to everybody in that big 10 and if when we win the people who have the greatest need have to sacrifice the most that's not a win. And that's the part that I think the party really has to come to terms with the people who are used to being told they got to wait another term they got to wait until the second half X Y Z that cannot be the story because those folks ain't coming out next time they might not come out this time because they've been told that so much that is something that has to be wrestled with in the only way that it is. And the only way that it can be is real investment targeted investment in black communities first and also around communities and with younger voters it stop calling people ideologues because they have big dreams for what this country owes them that's not what that is it's about knowing your worth and your politics should meet you in that.
So I think it's just time out for like well we just got to make it now damn that people are tired of just making it they want something greater and they deserve that so I think we have to be clear about that too it's no longer reasonable. But that welcome home y'all thank y'all for joining us on this solo pod we'll see you on Monday on my solo pod on to down Angela solo pod we'll be back here Thursday for our show and next Friday for many pod so make sure you tune in subscribe like all those things share.
