1:02to do with the Winnipeg Jets, team up tonight's game, between the Jets and the Anaheim Docks. And when you're fighting to claw your way into the postseason every game at this point of the year, enters that must-win territory if we can be hyperbolic about it as the Jetset try and manage the young, fast Docks at Canada Life Center looking to extend their six-game point streak, current six-game point streak, and current three-game winning streak. And they can't afford to give a point away tonight. They surely need both. With Mark Schifley coming off a week that's on name, the National Hockey League's first star, is he the one that the Jets are going to need to carry this club down the stretch? And how quickly should the Jets be prepared to shorten the bench with every situation now feeling do or die? Former NHL forward and Ducks color analyst Emerson Edom joins the program to discuss what's gone right in Anaheim is the Duckset atop the Pacific division, plus a hockey team in Ontario has had a whole season without a win.

This afternoon, this afternoon, eight minutes afternoon. I find myself well. How are you? I find myself also well. It's game day. Yes. The Anaheim Ducks are in town with John Carlson. You know, I always say, I'm not a talker, but then I tell stupid stories. Yeah. Go ahead. Here's a smart story. Okay. When John Carlson won the World Junior Tournament, I believe in Saskatoon. On an overtime goal, he came right to Interpec. The game was, I think, Monday or Sunday. I should have looked this up, but it just reminded me when he was coming to town, because he was just going from there to the Hershey Bears, who had the Washington drafts of and stuff. Also, they were playing the moose.

3:03They were playing the moose on Thursday or Saturday or Friday Saturday, but he came here for two to three days because they're like, well, why fly to Hershey? I think they were on the road somewhere. But John Carlson literally won the gold medal for U.S. at the World Junior Tournament in Saskatchewan, and then they're just like, well, you go to Winnipeg, and that's when he started his pro career. Or maybe they'd release them to go play there, but he started his pro career here in Winnipeg. The point is, is the first time he played a game after winning the World Junior Tournament, with an overtime goal, the golden goal for the World Junior Tournament for the U.S. He came to Winnipeg, and we did stories when he, you know, he was here, but we didn't know that. I mean, I think we knew it, but he was with the London Knights, and he went from the World Junior's to the Hershey Bears, and then- So they released him from the-

4:04So he played 59 games for the London Knights in 0809, and then went up to the Hershey Bears. He played 16 games in the playoffs, and then won the Colour Cup. Not bad. Yeah. And then he won the Colour Cup with the Hershey Bears again the next year, in 2009-2010. He played 48 games for- let me play 13 in the playoffs, and then he was a Washington Capital for the last 22 games. And then in 2018, he won a Cup with the Capitals. And then he won a Cup for the Capitals, he's played 113 games, all for the Washington Capitals, and tonight will be his first game as an Anaheim doc. And it was 2010. So he went up for the playoffs with the Hershey Bears, sorry, my apologies. Went up for the Hershey Bears run after junior. So he went right to the playoffs with the Hershey Bears, 16 games won the Colour Cup. Then he went back to Hershey the next year, played for them for 48 games, went down to the World Junior Tournament, came- won the gold medal goal, and then met the team here in Manitoba.

5:04Okay. He basically had a Colour Cup, a game-winning gold medal for the World Junior. What was your feeling about? Did you interview him at some point? Yes, my point. So my point to the story is- So what did you get from that interview, Jim? Nobody cared in the U.S. He came here and waited, I think, one or two- no, sorry, two days for the Bears to get here to play the moves on the weekend. And then we all wanted to talk to him because he just broke Canada's heart and won the gold medal in overtime. And he was like, there was more people talking to him here in Manitoba about scoring the gold medal game for the U.S. than there was the two days he was waiting around contacting him from the U.S. More people here cared that he scored a gold medal game for the U.S. I was actually- I was actually looking at Canada's heart, then he had talked- he said, I basically been talking to nobody and doing the- Even about the Olympics, I was actually listening to a podcast and they were talking about the Olympic win. And the guy said-

6:05And this was a- was a three or four days after they won gold. The states did. Yeah. And the guy on the podcast said, about now it's four days afterwards, about 99.9% of the discourse in the United States about this result has already come and passed. In Canada, they're probably at 15 or 20% of the discourse that's come following their silver medal. That's true. That's just outright true. Well, in far-hunt logic or somebody, I don't want to say far-hunted, but somebody when the U.S. won the gold medal in the Olympics said, this will be over in a week, but in Canada, this will live forever. Would have lived forever. Yeah. And I disagree with that a bit because look at the 1980 miracle on ice. Now I agree that this U.S. team was picked to be one of the teams that could win it. The 80 team was not even medals. So that, I think, has resonated since 1980, like, plus had a lot more than this one. I think it's now, it's the distance between those goals. But my point is, is now people care in the U.S., people care, you win the World Junior

7:08Tournament in the U.S., and people care where he basically was saying that, like, the media talking to him prior to the Moose Bears game about the gold medal winning goal was way more than anybody in the U.S., and he's basically had, like, was just sitting around waiting with no interviews to do or anything until he was made available prior to this game. Hawke is essentially Canada's biggest cultural export. But the distance traveled since 2010, too, right? Like, now Hawke in the U.S., compared to even 2010. Yeah. It matters to the players. It matters to that. But, like, if the world, if the world juniors won the U.S. won this year in Minnesota, it would be epic compared to what it was in 2010. He scored a gold medal winning goal, and nobody talked to him for three days until local media and Winnipeg did. Yeah. That's the way it is. Mark Schifle yesterday was named the NHL first star of the week, eight points over three games, three goals. I think a couple of those were game winners, and then he had that big goal at the end of the second period against Vancouver.

11:10Who asked to carry this team down the stretch gym? Is it is it Mark Schifle? Is it Connor Hellabuck? Is it Josh Morrissey? Is it Kyle Connor? Is it somebody like Cole Perfetti who needs to provide some more offense or is it the depth of this team? I mean, what do you think about that? Well, I'll start with this tweet from a Brent Chapman who reached out to me on X this morning when I put out yesterday, Schifle was the first star of the week, three goals, five assists, eight points and three games. And he replied, how did Wilson and Bennett do this week? Who needs gold when Wilson gets his Gordy Howe hat trick against France? They'll think twice next time they play Canada, good call team Canada, imagine no one in team Canada brain trust said, what if one of the talented guys gets hurt? And that was my point, right? Crosby went down and you're bringing in the Bennett's or the Seth Jarvis's or well Jarvis sort of played anyway, but Mark Schifle should have been on that Olympic team. There is no doubt in my mind who is the biggest by far the biggest error.

12:11And that is who is carrying this team, Nancy, your question right now. And that is who is going to have to carry this team. He is on a, a projection for career high in points. And I'm going to remind everybody at 32 years old, he has 78 points in 62 games. He's hit the 30 goal plateau Saturday against the connox for the fifth time in his career. And three more times he's had 29 goals. He's sixth in league scoring right now. And for everybody wants to talk playoffs, he had 11 points at 11 games last year, five goals, six assists. He had six points in five games a year previous when Colorado pounded him six goals in, or sorry, six points in five games at 30 years old. He is the fourth leading Canadian goal score behind Conor McDavid, Nathan McKinnon, McLean Celebrini, Mark Schifle.

13:12Yeah. And he said that is who's going to carry the team over this. And that is who has been carrying the sixth in league scoring right now, seven, eight, he's over Capriol. Six in league scoring. He's top 10. And he's over Capriol Caprissoff, by the way, who is 76 points, he's having a fantastic season. I don't like to disparage anybody who made the Olympic team. But you don't need five guys that can grime and defend. No. Horvath showed his worth in the face off circle. That was evident. They needed him. That was a good pick. The opportunity presented itself too for them to grab guys. They didn't. They went for... When I'm picking a team like this, I'm not taking too many scores and I'm not taking too many defenders and I'm not taking too many grinders. I'm having a top six and a bottom six and I'm having a backup for each one. And then the defense I'm doing both. I'm having a defensive defenseman and I'm having an offensive defenseman. And you're just going to sit. This is your job. You sit and wait. I want to ask you one more question here before we take a break.

14:13Should... How quickly should the Jets shorten the bench? They've got 20 games left here. If they're down to nothing in midway through the second period, do you shorten that bench? I think you have to. Yes. You... Scott Orneal said this prior to Saturday's game, I heard it in the pre-game show. This is our playoffs. So sorry if you're tired if we make the playoffs and sorry if you've been playing an extra six minutes a night if we make the playoffs and sorry if we go into the first round of you dead tired and beat up. This is our playoffs. So they're going to approach each game including tonight, approach, sorry each game including tonight as if it's a playoff game. So just to for any listeners that don't remember, Ducks are up three nothing in the series. Game four here in Winnipeg, backhand top corner glove side on Andre Pavlik tied the game up at one. It was late in the first period. I think two minutes or so left. You danced around Jacob Truba to make that goal happen.

20:22Have you mentioned it to him at all? Have you brought it up to him? No, because I have a feel and he's just going to bring up finances and how much more he's made. I haven't brought it up. There's just no point. So you know, he's had one heck of a career. I mean, that was just a blip on his screen and you know, he's been tremendous by the way. He's been such a consistent D for us. I think there was a lot of question marks with his AAV that he was making at least at the time. I know everything's been driven up here. And so even what he's making now isn't was a couple years ago, but for a guy to step in with all the pressure in the world as far as now less being in the big apple and coming from there. You want to talk about half or beak in the management here and trusting a guy to really turn this thing around. I mean, he was one of the big cornerstones for this turnaround and he's been phenomenally

21:23scoring goals. He's just been super active, offensively on the blue line, probably the most aggressive he's been in his career offensively at this age and he's kept up with the physicality and all the good stuff he's always brought on the back end. So I just he's been a huge difference maker for for the stuff one. I want to talk about Padford because we're talking before the show that you know, they look like they're going to make the playoffs and how far they go once you're in is is always you know up to how you're playing health and all that. But if there ever is an organization that seems to have that youth and veteran mix, it's Yanaheim. I don't know if it's all going to come together to a Stanley Cup this year, but over the years, like you've seen that, right? You've got to have your youth in your speed, but you've got to have your veterans too and Burbeek seems to be the guy who went out and not only draft to the, he wasn't there for the drafting a lot of the youth, but he definitely went out and got the right veterans. Yeah, Chris Crider. Yeah, no, he's been phenomenal. I think he should be in the running for GM of the year. If not this year, I think he is definitely going to be in that conversation for years

22:26to come because look, I, he's gotten some flak at least from friends and stuff like that initially, but they always work out and play, you know, how much flak did he receive for bumping up in that draft in Beckett, Seneca ranked mid-round central scouting? He takes him at three, we find out that Columbus, you know, about a year later was going to take him at four. So he knew something was with that, but I mean, how much has that worked out? And so every, in my mind, every move pretty much, he's made despite maybe some initial, you know, head scratching has really worked out well. So and, and if you look at this latest John Carlson, I think once again, it's, you look at the age, right? Here you are. You're, I think he's 36 and despite the numbers, everyone just looks at that age, right? But I started thinking about it really actually at the pregame skate, which I just got back from and he was taking reps on the, the first unit. Now, he's not set to play tonight, but, you know, this power play for the ducks as well

23:29as they are, have been playing in how competitive they've been in the standings. They're 24th on the power play, right? So, you know, if you're thinking about squeezing past the first round, you just got to have a better power play and it just kind of all came in me. It's like, wow, not much about that move was more about the power play specifically than anything else. So I think it's a huge boost in the power play. It's what the power play needed, even though it's, it's got all the skill in the world. It just needed some more of an extra camaraderie or some clicking in there to really take them to a whole nother level. So I love the move. I think you can give up those types of picks first rounders just because of where you position yourself for the next decade. And in fact, it's just how many, how many more young stuff would you really need at this point? But, you know, this is, this is the next decade of ducks hockey coming up. It's going to be extremely exciting. If you guys tuned into that duck's Canadians game the other night, I mean, you want to talk about two teams that are built very similarly and it was just a back and forth game.

24:35So those are two teams, both on the west and on the east that are, are matched up pretty, pretty similarly that are going to be fun to watch here move forward. If there's one thing that coach Joel Quinnville has that's been the most, the thing that is stood out to you the most about what he's been able to change on this roster, what would it be? Well, I think the, just dap, right? It's, it's, you know, I think everywhere it's improved. I think the most solidified area throughout this struggling time was of course in the golden department. I mean, you know, Gibby, obviously he's doing wonderful things there in Detroit right now, but you know, Gibby and and Lukash at one point really did their best despite being peppered for for five, six seasons there. So the goldening has been the, the mainstay and the, the deepest department for the ducks and I just think that the fence of core and often just adding the depth.

25:37I mean, we had, and this isn't knocking Brent Leeson, he's a phenomenal man and he's done some great things in his career, but you know, at times last year, year before, you know, he's playing second-line minutes. So it just goes to show how many additions have been made within the last season and a half. And all it's done is add depth. So you go from, you know, have guys like Leeson guys. I can pull some other out of hat, but, but point blank on, on good teams, we had third, fourth-liners playing, playing second-line minutes over the last couple of years. And now it's just what we're a pretty deep team full of so much skill. And that's been the biggest boost, just adding pieces that are really going to get it done, you know, when the, when the team needs a goal, five minutes. I mean, how many come from behind wins? Has this team had, you know, it's one of the league leaders in, in comeback wins,

26:39this duck squad. And how much of that has to do with bringing in guys like Criter, right, who know goalscores throughout their career that are in and around the blue paint, that can just pop those big, late game goals home. And you got a guy like Beckett Seneca, who just last game, the puck rolls off a stick with the mere 42nd fluff. It sure goes out of the neutral zone. He just grabs the puck and says, you know what, boys, sorry, I'm just going to get it done here. And one thing led to another, they tied up in it, in the rest of the history, but it's just one of those things where, yeah, it's a, it's a deep, deeper duck's team. And this is just a start. Well, certainly just like to me, the Jets almost come from behind against the ducks all too well, eight, two, nothing, three, one, just last month. They hated that last month, for sure. It's a fun team to watch. Like, even Scott or Neil, we ran that clip. We got to go, Emerson, Cameron, that clip of Scott or Neil today saying, you know, the way when they get the puck, they turn and they're gone. And not just one of them, like the D go everybody. And he said,

27:41it just reminds them of Quinnville's days in Chicago. So it looks like they built a similar team there. But we appreciate your time. Thank you, sir. No, thanks for having me any time.
