Packers Super Bowl Checklist!!!

0:00What's going on, Packers fans, happy Monday, happy Labor Day, happy day one of week one. Welcome into another episode of the Packed Day podcast. I'm your host Andy Herman. Tell me on Twitter at Andy Herman NFL and the podcast at Packed Day podcast. Hope your holiday weekend is going amazing. It is Monday of week one. I cannot believe it. We've finally made it. All of that has happened since the Packers devastating loss to the Bears a year ago up until now as we get ready for Packers Vikings. We're not going to preview Packers Vikings today. We've got a lot of the week to still do that. But what I wanted to do is kind of take one more look at this team more specifically at what this team needs to do to become the Super Bowl champions that you and me and

1:01everyone in Green Bay, etc. wants them to ultimately become. And so we're going to put together the checklist today of things that need to happen in order for this to become a Super Bowl team in 2026 last 2027. Now the Packers, as I'm recording this in full transparency, I'm recording this on Friday night, actually very early on Saturday morning, technically. The Packers are plus 2200 to win the Super Bowl. That puts them 15th out of 32 teams. The odds makers do not think highly of the Green Bay Packers at the moment. They are 7th in the NFC. However, what I will tell you is that this exact same time a year ago, the Seattle Seahawks, the eventual Super Bowl champions were at plus 6000 plus 6000 to win the Super Bowl on September 2nd of 2025 last year. Packers plus 2200 doesn't seem so bad in comparison. So you never know what's going to happen. I think you and I would both agree that there's a lot of talent on this Packers team, but

2:02they do still feel like they have a ways to go to becoming true, legitimate Super Bowl contenders. And I'll say one more time what I've said all off season. The last few years, especially the last two years after that playoff win against Dallas and then the loss against San Francisco. The last two years, it's felt like everyone's tried to get ahead of like Green Bay is going to be the next big up and coming team. And you know, once they got Micah Parsons, their Super Bowl odds, you know, went through the roof. I think a lot of people myself included are saying, Hey, you don't get the benefit of the doubt anymore. Until you prove us otherwise, you are probably a number seven seed with a first round playoff exit. They've lost their last three playoff games. They've been the seven seed the last three years. That's who they are. And the onus and the pressure is on the Green Bay Packers to prove that they are anything other than that. Everyone's wanted to sort of say, Yeah, this packers team, they're young, they're up and coming. They're going to be the team that could really be the team to beat over the next few seasons. And it does, it has not worked out that way.

3:05And today we're going to label, I think what needs to happen in order for the Packers to get to that spot. Now, when I put together this checklist, I should note that not everything I'm about to say needs to happen one after the other doesn't have to have been at all. There are things on this list that could go wrong and the Packers could still win a Super Bowl. But if you're really looking to put together a pathway, the Packers becoming true, legitimate, Super Bowl contenders and hopefully Super Bowl winners, they need a lot of the things on this list to go their way. Just like any other team, whether I was doing this for the chiefs or the Seahawks or the Patriots or the commanders or the Bears or whomever, they need a variety of things to happen in order for them to become Super Bowl champions. So let's go through it. Let's break down this list of what needs to happen for your Green Bay Packers to become Super Bowl champions this year. Number one, I don't need to say it. Let's get it over with. I'll say it anyway, the injury roulette wheel needs to be in the Packers favor.

4:07Every year, there's going to be a couple teams that are just completely out of it, simply due to their injury list. And quite frankly, even though Green Bay didn't have like 10 or 12 devastating injuries, they had key injuries to their key players. Creba was never going to win a Super Bowl without Micah Parsons, Tucker Kraft, Zach Bacabalella and Devote Wyatt. There was no chance. Could they and should have they have beaten the Bears? Yes. Could they maybe have gone into Seattle and BZL? Probably not, but maybe. But there's no way they were getting through a full gauntlet of playoff teams without for their what best eight, nine, ten players, wherever you want to put Wyatt at the bottom of that. But it just was, it was impossible. They were never going to be able to do it. And so they didn't have a ton of injuries, but their injuries they did have more impactful. There's going to be a couple teams every year that just have like 20 injuries and aren't able to overcome it. There's other ones that are going to have their quarter back get hurt. That's going to be the end of their Super Bowl, you know, odds.

5:09There's going to be other teams like the Packers who just have too many injuries to keep players. It's not a shock, a surprise, a stunner that the Seattle Seahawks were one of the healthiest teams throughout last season. You think that might have helped a little bit as they were on their way to a Super Bowl win? So yes, the injury roulette wheel that happens every single week, spin the wheel, see who gets hurt, spin the wheel again, see how long they're out for. Last year, Green Bay had some devastating ones. They can't have it happen again. If it does, they're probably going to be dead on arrival again. So they've got to get some luck from the injury roulette wheel. Number two has been a talking point from Ed policy to Brian Gutekence to Matt LaFlor, to Jordan Love to a variety of other players in the locker room. This team has to find a way to finish games. They have to finish him strong. They have to actually live and breathe the all gas no break. They need to play four quarters of football. They can't take their foot off the gas when they have a big lead. They've got to get so much better at closing out games. There is a mentality that comes with that.

6:09There is a confidence. There is a killer instinct that Green Bay has simply lacked, especially last year. They've got to find a way to develop that. And sometimes the way that you figure that out is through failure. And Green Bay failed in its biggest moments last season and it killed them. It killed their chances. It killed them in the playoffs, killed them in the biggest moments. And they've got to find a way to overcome that and be better. If they have learned their lesson and if they've evolved past that being an issue, well, guess what? That's going to be a huge step for this team to take. That all of a sudden when they get in those key situations, they're sick of it. They're tired of it. They're tired of losing in big moments. And if they can grow and evolve into a team that does have that killer instinct, that would go a long way in helping this team when a Super Bowl speaking of evolving. It is time for Matt LaFlor to take a step in his evolution as head coach.

7:11I don't know if you notice this, but Ben Johnson is the head coach in Chicago. And he has taken a different approach. He has taken an approach that Packers are kind of public enemy number one. They have gone after Green Bay. They have made it known. They have set it in the media. They have set it in the locker room, F Green Bay, all of these things. Ben Johnson even said he likes beating Matt LaFlor. They've made this a thing. And Green Bay decided to be, that's cute. That's fine. You go do your thing. We're too big and important for that. We're just going to be ourselves and we're not going to bother ourselves enough. Raise the bar. They want to go about it that way. Not just them, but everyone. I need Matt LaFlor. We've talked about relative A whole score. I need Matt LaFlor to raise his relative A whole score this year. I want him to take it right to Ben Johnson. And I want him to, to the point where Green Bay could be up five touchdowns late in the

8:17fourth quarter and they're going for two. That's what I want. You're coming to Lambo. You want to be a douchebag about it? All right. Let's go. Rivalry's on. Game on. They were, they were too big for that last year. They were going to let the Bears be, you know, petty and, you know, what? Bears took it to Green Bay. When it mattered most, they won the two big games, including a playoff win over the Green Bay Packers. And that can't happen again. So yeah, I want to see all gas no break. And I want to see a whole Matt LaFlor. I want to see him take this rivalry to another level. I don't care if it has to, you know, be, you know, cold handshakes or whatever it might be. I don't care if Matt's got to get the team a little bit more out of that, but go into the game. And not just, and I'm just not talking about Chicago too. I am talking about going to teams and taking it to them because guess what? That is also the next evolution for this team in becoming that team with a killer instinct that they are never going to quit.

9:19They are going to take it to every single team when they are up 21 to three at half time. They're going for 42 to three or 51 to three or whatever it might be. They want to keep piling on. It's not well. We just got to, you know, maintain possession of the ball. And let's see if we can get our run game going. No, shove it right down everyone's throat when you have the opportunity to be a douchebag. I want coaches upset because Green Bay isn't following the unwritten rules of when to take your foot off the gas. That's what I want to see from this team. It's time to evolve. It's time to be the whole. It's time to show everyone that Green Bay can play that style and that brand of football as well. No more Mr. Nice guy. The gloves are off. Understand that the gloves are off. You got punched in the face twice at the end of last year by your biggest rival and they beat you in a playoff game because you didn't close the game and you didn't go for the kill to be fair on that one. I'm actually giving Matt LaFour a little pass because he was pretty aggressive in throwing the ball in the second half of that playoff game and players just didn't execute and

10:22couldn't come up with key plays at the end. But even still you get my larger point. I need to see an evolution from Matt LaFour and making this team into the team that we have seen at times in flashes in glimpses. Have it be all the time. I don't care about the unwritten rules. I don't care about any of that. Go for the kill. Be the douchebag. Be the A-hole. I don't care. That's the next evolution for Matt. That's the next evolution for this team. Next up offensive line gels improves and helps out this running game and obviously Matt LaFour in rounding out this offense. I love the weapons. Tucker craft, Matthew Golden, Christian Watson, Jaden Reed, whether it's Josh Jacobs or not Josh Jacobs, even Martian Lloyd, they have more than enough weapons on this offense. I love Jordan. What he brings to the team. This all comes down to the offensive line on offense. Adam Stenevich, Luke Buttkiss, everybody. Everybody should be all hands on deck in making that offensive line as good as possible.

11:23I don't care if you need an outside consultant. I don't care what you need to do. Call Mike Wall. Please call Mike Wall. Get that offensive line performing at a higher level. I said it last year. I'll say it again right now. I don't think the offensive line is going to be just like, oh my god, they're awful. What is this offensive line doing? I do think it absolutely can be the reason that they don't win a Super Bowl or in that conversation. I think it can be the weak link of the team. That's enough in and of itself. All hands on deck, this offensive line has to get better. They have to find a way to gel together and they have to find a way that this can be at least a good offensive line. It doesn't have to be great. It doesn't have to be top five. It doesn't have to be top 10, but it can't be in the bottom 16. I would say like 15th is the worst. They've got to somehow find a way to glue and piece together this offensive line into the 15th best offensive line at worst in the NFL. I don't know if they can do that. They've got to find a way.

12:23Next up, the defense and the special teams need to flourish under their new coordinators. Jonathan Ganon and Cam A. Cord early returns are great. Preseason and training camp early returns don't mean a whole hell of a lot. We have seen Cam A. Cord put together a number one special teams. We have seen Jonathan Ganon put together a number one defense. I'm not expecting the number one defense. I'm not expecting the number one special teams, but they're going to have to be fast adopters to these new styles on defense and special teams. And both Ganon and A. Cord are going to have to be on the top of their games, getting the most out of these units, especially Jonathan Ganon without Michael Parsons early in the year. I get Michael Parsons back. He is one of the one A weapons and all football in his arsenal. How can he make the most of that? And how can that set up the rest of this defense that also has weapons in Edron Cooper, Evan Williams, Aver McKinney. Mike has not the only one. And I think Jonathan Ganon's going to be a lot more creative in utilizing those weapons.

13:25But they both the defense and special teams need to take significant steps with their new coordinators. Number seven, Trace Mack needs to avoid the rookie kicker issues or just the green bay packer kicker issues or whatever you want to call it. We just did the simulation yesterday for the AI simulation. If you didn't catch that, check it out. But there may have been a kicker issue in one of the games in that one. So this is a rookie kicker that you're going into a very important season with. Listen, he's been awesome in games. Hopefully that continues. I have a feeling there's going to be some bumps in the road. There's certainly were in training camp OTA's mini camp, etc. But if Trace Mack can just come in and be the guy right away, one of the better kickers in the league, that would certainly go a long way in helping this team be a super bowl contender as well. We'll see what he can do. But at minimum, he can't have some big stretch where he doesn't make kicks or, you know, he's got to be the kicker that for the first time in a while actually makes their kicks when

14:25it's important in the playoffs. And Anders Carlson could not do that. Brandon McManus could not do that. We'll see if Trace Mack can do that. Next, Packers need to win the NFC North. I understand we all remember the last time the Packers won the Super Bowl, they went on the road three times and then beat the Steelers and the Super Bowl. Great. It's an unbelievable run. The fantastic story. It's just so hard. It's just so insanely hard to go on the road three times in the playoffs and get three wins. And quite frankly, I think it's a modern day. I'm not going to say impossibility, but a very, very, very, very, very, very strong and probability. It's just it's too daunting to go on the road three times, especially in this NFC. What are you going to go to LA, to Philly, to Seattle and win all three of those games on the road or to Chicago to Detroit? I don't even care who it is to San Francisco. Man, Grebe has enough problems with one road game in the playoffs winning three.

15:29It's not happening. And the only way, but for the most part, there are other ways you, I guess you could finish with like the fifth seed and then you could face the six or seven seed in the, you know, in the championship game. There are other ways, but in all likelihood, if you want a home game, at least one, you have to at least win your division. It's time they're due. They've got to find a way to top the division this year. I think they can. We'll see if they will. But to me, that is a pre-equicit to actually winning a Super Bowl is winning the NFC North. It's going to be tough if Jordan takes a step back or even just stays status quo. Jordan was really good last year. And if he just stays healthy for the years, his numbers have been great. If Matt uses them a little bit more, but even that ended up itself is going to be performing better. It's going to be tough if he takes any sort of step back, even if it's a minute one, they need him to take a step forward. They need him to be a little bit better, especially with this unknown running game and what's going to happen with Josh Jacobs. Since Jordan loves team, let Jordan cook. But when he does, he's going to have to find a way to take a step forward once again, which he's done the last, what, six years. He's gotten better every year. Let's see if you can do it one more time. Speaking of steps, LVN needs to absolutely take one.

20:39It is time per Kevin Green. It is time. Even with Micah coming back, potentially week five, Micah does need help. You need one more edge rusher to really put a lot of pressure on from the other side. That needs to be LVN. The top 15 pick, all the talent in the world, the time to develop working now with Micah Parsons, the best edge rushers getting all the double and triple teams across from you. This has to be the season that LVN takes that step. Again, there are other ways. Did I then a sudden could take that step? Baren Sarell could take that step. There are other players who could potentially do that. But the most likely is LVN. And if he could do it, I think it would go a long way in really helping the defense become a much greater unit than they were over the last couple of seasons. Brandon Cise needs to be as advertised. We could also just say here that one of the corners needs to step up in a significant way. But the truth of the matter is, it's probably not going to be Keeshawn. It's probably not going to be Carrington Valentine.

21:40And I tend to doubt that it's going to be Benjamin St. Juice. The most likely scenario for a legitimate breakout and just unbelievable season that corner is Brandon Cise. He has to be as advertised. He has to be at least a good starting corner. It doesn't have to be great. It doesn't have to be stellar. It doesn't have to be an all-prower of Pro Bowl candidate. Year one is a rookie. But he at least has to be a good solid starter at corner. Because if he's not, you might just not have a good corner on the roster. We'll see what St. Juice can do. We'll see if Nixon or Valentine can kind of bounce back. But to me, Brandon Cise is the one that has to be the guy at corner and just be a really sound starting corner from day one in the NFL. Number 13. The Packers need to find that diamond in the rough that's already on the roster. That kind of comes out of nowhere to be really good. Sam Shields is a UDFA. Dylan Jenkins kind of took a winding road to becoming a really good player for the Packers. Kabir Baja B. Emillo was cut as a fifth-round pick, signed back and eventually made his way into one

22:42of the best past rushers in the league. Aaron Campman was a rotational edge slash interior defender who all of a sudden had a major breakout out of nowhere and also became one of the best past rushers in the league. Tremont Williams, undrafted free agent, journeyman, Green Bay eventually got him, gave him a chance. He became one of the best corners in football. They need a guy, at least one guy to kind of come out and know where and just be really freaking good. This roster's lacking a couple pieces and they are due with all their draft and develop and stashing these guys and the job that they do, scouting people around the league. Look what they do with Kalamakor turning them into a six-round pick. They've got to find a couple guys or they've got to develop a couple guys or at least one that is able to take a big step this year and kind of be that next version of Shields, Jenkins, Kabir, Campman, Tremont, etc. Hasselbeck was another one who kind of did it. Yeah, they need that next guy to really step up and kind of come out and know where and

23:42just be a really, really good starter. It's like, oh my god, Donovan Jennings is a great guard. Did not see that coming or Kamal Hadin is a, you know, Tremont Williams-esque corner on the outside. I don't know who it is or how they get there. Tiger on Hopper is a, you know, unbelievable linebacker. Just took a massive step, you know, kind of Desmond Bishop style. Whatever it might be, they're going to need players to step up and they need at least one of them to step up in a significant way. Number 14, Goody works his pro-personnel magic. Think-resue will Douglas. As I mentioned, this roster feels like it's missing a couple pieces. They need a player to develop internal, but Goody needs to continue to upgrade this roster in different ways. I like what he did at tight end with Redmond and John who Smith. I think that was really smart. I like what he did with Caleb Johnson. I thought that was really smart. There are a couple other pieces up. Maybe it's one of those, by the way. Maybe John who Smith reverts back to his dolphins year a couple of years ago and it looks like a pro-bolt tight end. Imagine if you get that with Tucker Kraft, good luck, rest of the league with that 12

24:45personnel. Maybe Redmond becomes one of the best blocking tight ends in football right away. Maybe it's something like that. Caleb Johnson is immediately what everyone expected to be coming out of Iowa. Maybe he's the answer to it. I don't know. Or maybe they can go out and find another resueled Douglas off of a practice squad who becomes a really good corner, something like that. Goody's going to have to continue to work his pro-personnel magic. Number 15, maybe the most important one on this list and it has nothing to do with the Packers. They just got to get a little lucky. The Bears last year were a pretty lucky team. It didn't help them come the postseason, but and I am a believer. You make your own luck in this league. There's no question about it. But whether it's a ball that bounces your way, a joint that hits off the post and goes in or a joint for the other team that hits off the post and goes out, there is a little luck that goes along with this. Green Bay's due for a little luck. Hopefully they can get some of the subcoming season. Next up, they've got to get hot at the right time. Last year was the exact opposite of that.

25:46They got cold at the wrong time. They lose five games in a row to end the season and looked like they were the least confident that they were at any point in the year. Lips that reverse it. I want to see this team playing its best football like the 2010 team who got hot at the right time and played their best football at the end of the year. That's going to be the key for this team to be playing playoff caliber, super ball caliber football as soon as that playoff starts. You also have to mitigate the week links on the team, whether that's Jacob Monk at right guard, Keeshawn Nixon at corner. There's probably a couple others we could name as well, but this is a week link league. If you've got a guard that struggles in pass pro, they're going to find it. They're going to blitz it. They're going to make his life a living hell. If you have a corner that struggles to match up, guess what? He's going to get a large dose of Justin Jefferson and I'm on Ross St. Brown and Devante Smith and so on. Devante Adams, etc. He's going to get the best receivers on him. So those week links, whether it is Nixon or Monk, or whether it's somebody else due to

26:51injury, they've got to find a way to mitigate those weaknesses and take other teams away from attacking those specific weaknesses or just try to find a way to make them a strengths. That can work too. They have to improve their red zone efficiency. That's something that's gone down really since 2020 and it used to be really good. We called it the gold zone. We got really excited. We were eating everywhere and instead this red zone offense has taken a step back as of late. They've got to get that mojo back. Hopefully they can do that this upcoming season. They need to continue their big play advantage. Green Bay is a team that takes shots down the field and they're pretty efficient at it. They are the ones that are usually generating those big plays and Zaver McKinney is a one-man big play takeaway weapon. He limits the amount of times the teams can target down field because he's such a great center fielder and in general this defense does a great job at limiting and mitigating those big play opportunities. That needs to continue. They need to be both really good at generating big plays and making sure that other teams are not getting big plays against them.

27:52Last but not least, Micah Parsons needs to be Micah Freaking Parsons. If he is 75, 80, 85, even 90% of himself, that's probably not going to be good enough. They need him to go full Christian Watson and basically come back better than he was prior to the ACL injury. I don't know how realistic that is. Micah was pretty freaking amazing already. If he comes back and picks up even right where he left off or maybe even takes a step forward, look the hell out. That is going to be a one-man wrecking crew that I know is chomping at the bit to get out there and wreck some quarterback's lives. I cannot wait for it to say the least. Just to recap, they've got to have some injury luck. They need to finish games better. Matt LaFlor needs to take that evolution. All gas, no break. Take it a little bit more to heart. Be a little bit more of an A-hole. Offensive line needs to gel. They need to improve their running attack and that offensive line just needs to be much better than they were a season ago. Defense and special teams need to flourish under Jonathan Ganon and Cam Acord. Trace Mac needs to avoid the rookie kicker issues. They need to peak at the right time.

28:53Win the NFC North. Jordan Love needs to put together his best season yet. LVN takes a real true legitimate step. Brandon C. say needs to be as advertised. They need to find a young, up-and-coming gem that they didn't know that they had. Goodie needs to work some pro personnel magic. They need to have a little bit of luck. Midigate the weak links. Improve their red zone efficiency. Continue their big play advantage. And Micah needs to be Micah. Again, don't need all 20, but they need a lot of those in order to be the best team that they can possibly be. And a true legitimate, super bowl contender. To tough division, to tough conference. Those like maybe they're lacking a piece or two, but I don't think they have quite the burden of expectation that they had a season ago. It felt like those expectations were a little bit more than maybe that team could handle. They're a little bit older. They're a little bit wiser. They've gone through some adversity. Let's see if they can come out of it. Be a better team in 2026 and 2027. And really, truly go on a special run. That's what I'm hoping for. It's going to be quite the journey. Can't wait to see a takeoff against Minnesota this week.
