Niall McCabe To Play Kilkee Concert

He's open-framble, and the American cork has a busy touring schedule ahead and is getting ready to record his third album, and he is going to be playing the Greyhound in Kool-Key this Friday at 9 o'clock. Now in the Cabe, very good morning to you. Good morning to you. Thanks for having me. Yeah, thanks very much for joining us. I talked to us a little bit about your op-raining, which I know you've described the wild Atlantic way, and your op-raining in Claire Island as important influences. What are growing up in a relatively remote place, I suppose, give you creatively that you might not have gone growing up in a more urban setting? Yeah, well, I mean, first of all, there was no such thing as the wild Atlantic way when I was born. That's very weird. It was just the wild Atlantic. It was just wild. Well, I know it's not that long ago, but I mean, because you're in such a remote place,

1:00I mean, when I was born, there was no electricity on Claire Island, so it didn't come in for two years after that, which makes me sound like I'm very, very old. But I guess we were kind of, you kind of live in kind of a couple of decades kind of in the past, in a bit, in some ways, but you're also kind of quite modern because they bring in, and we had the internet before the people, our equivalent on the mainland. And satellite dishes and all that. But also, so there's a bit of kind of in the past and in the future. So yeah, I mean, there's definitely something that's in that kind of effect as a person. And I guess the small community, I know there's lots of small communities in the country, but there's 130 people, ish on Claire Island. So you very much, you know, your connections are very strong. The sense of community is very, very strong. And I guess what else would, but you know, the sea has to have an effect on you, you know, as a person and as a writer, as a creative person.

2:02And I tend to do, I tend to write a lot from that, like, you know, the sea has appeared in a lot of songs. Yeah, I mean, they've started getting into music and, you know, beginning a musical adventure or career from a place with such a small population. How has that been? You know, what are, I guess, what, what were musical influences? I mean, is it difficult, you know, to talk about grown, when you're born, there's no electricity there. You're just listening to others playing traditional music. Are you hearing more popular music from around the rest of the country in the world? Ah, but no, no more than anyone else in the country. We're, you know, we had the radio and television, but I get a lot of the stuff that we got, which is, you know, could be random. You know, somebody, we had a pub in the island and I was working there as a team. I was working as your, and, you know, someone might leave a tape. And then that was your, that was your, your next obsession for, you know, our obsession for the next couple of months. We got great tapes that way and great influences.

3:02Like, 60th Psycho Daily, for some reason, you know, we got into these two, you know, we had a, we had the VHS of the blues, but the story matters about that. You know, it's very just random, it could be, it could be an interesting, you know. Where you are in your career at the moment, Niley, and I was mentioned playing the grand all-operies such a legendary venue, playing big gigs with, with Ambil, I mentioned your bout to make your third album. That's with Jerry Douglas, the Grammy winning producer, a course of, I'd run out of breath, talking about the number artists he's worked with, the Eric Clapton's James Taylor's, Elvis Costellas of the world, Alison Crousin, Union Station, he's played with. Things seem to be going pretty well for you. Would that be fair to say if it do you feel like you're in a good place in your career? Well, you know, I feel like I'm in the same place all the time. I just hang in on for dear life. But you're hanging on pretty well. Yeah, I've got a good grip now. But yeah, I know I feel like it's, like it definitely feels like it's been, it's been

4:05along, along, not as it's struggled, along kind of hall, and you know, put the head down and just keep on, you know, one step and one foot and one foot and one the other, and kind of that's the way it's been. And things are just kind of happening slowly. But very thankful for it. It's great. It's amazing. And I just, yeah, I keep the head down, I keep it, I keep on walking. Keep on walking as the walk is gone pretty well. You're last single. I have to ask you how it featured guest vocals from 4 fans and Sting. How did that collaboration come about? Well, funny, I was, I was sitting in, in play actually, in, in Venice, about to do my first rehearsal with Mike McGold looking all the Casey for a music network tour. And I started getting these messages. That thing was looking, was looking for me. And I didn't, I didn't think it was true. I was here at first. I thought I was like, you know, the Nigerian prince once.

5:06He's very close to me. As they leave me alone. This is cruel because you know I'm such a big fan. But then the, anyway, Blanc story short, he turned out, he was looking for me, because he'd found, he found a video of me singing, every little thing. Every little thing she does magic on YouTube. And he really liked it. And he wanted to, he just wanted to connect with me. And he, you know, he then he'd gone and looked at some, my other, my other original songs. And, yeah, so he invited me down to the cork to his show and I went there and we kind of, took it off. And yeah, we just kind of developed a relationship and kind of working on some songs together at this and that. Anyway, again, long story short, I just asked him what he thinks in some harmonies. He said no problem. Well, that's incredible how that came about. And I guess I let the proves a the power of YouTube and B must have been a thrill for you to know that, you know, he did further digging to think of staying sitting at his computer. Obviously, I'd say it has impressive size screen and so on. Just watching so much in some of your videos, you know, given that you've touched on the sounds of your fan of his work, be it solo and with the police, that must be cool to know

6:09that he was sitting there digging what you were doing. Yeah, yeah, I mean, of course it's very very satisfying and very satisfying and you know, it makes it makes you feel like maybe, you know, maybe it's not all from nothing as well, you know, in these moments. But yeah, and there's a part of YouTube because that was sitting there for, I'd say, 12 years maybe. Before he found it. Before he googled himself. Well, there you go. Look a slow burner and you're glad you left it up. Look, we look forward to hearing the third album when it's done. I suppose you're returning to work with cherry Douglas. So it's probably unfair to ask you for any sort of release day. But we do know you're playing the Greyhound in Kilkea this Friday, which is a great venue. Have you played it before? I think I have many, many years ago. And I'm so all that it's in the dark past. Yeah, tomorrow night in Kilkea is going to be really good. So I'm really looking forward to getting back there.
