Matthew Chapter 26: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus is only days away from getting crucified in Matthew 26, so naturally the chapter begins with murder plots, an extremely expensive bottle of perfume being dumped on his head, and Jesus basically telling everyone, “The poor will still be here later. Right now, focus on me.” Coming immediately after Matthew 25’s whole feed the hungry, help the poor or face eternal punishment routine, the timing is... spectacular.

Then Judas enters the chat with his famous 30 pieces of silver, and the whole concept of betrayal starts getting philosophically messy. If Jesus knows Judas will betray him, says scripture requires Judas to betray him, and his death is supposedly part of God’s plan... exactly how much free will does Judas have here? We also get the Last Supper, where Christianity officially launches its longstanding tradition of symbolically eating Jesus’ body and drinking his blood, which somehow sounds substantially less weird once you’ve heard it every Sunday for two thousand years.

From there we head to Gethsemane, where Jesus suddenly becomes extremely human and begs God to find another way out of the whole crucifixion situation. Unfortunately, his closest disciples keep falling asleep while he does it. Then Judas arrives with an armed crowd, somebody cuts off a dude’s ear, Jesus announces that he could summon more than twelve legions of angels if he wanted to, and everybody runs away anyway.

Finally, Jesus is hauled before Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin, accused of blasphemy, beaten, mocked, and questioned while Peter lurks outside pretending he has absolutely no idea who Jesus is. Three denials later, a rooster clocks in right on cue and Peter realizes Jesus called it. Which raises one of our recurring problems with Matthew: when a gospel written decades after the events repeatedly tells us Jesus predicted exactly what later happened, are we reading prophecy... or literary foreshadowing written backward?
