Matthew Chapter 27 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Judas hangs himself, Pilate washes his hands, Jesus gets crucified, dead saints start wandering around Jerusalem, and somehow Matthew 27 still has time to squeeze in a questionable prophecy citation and one of the ugliest seeds of Christian antisemitism. This Q&A digs into Judas’s sudden remorse, whether his betrayal was about greed, politics, or forcing Jesus to finally do some Messiah magic, and the eerie parallel between Judas and Ahithophel from 2 Samuel 15–17. Then Matthew casually attributes the “30 pieces of silver” prophecy to Jeremiah when the much more obvious source is Zechariah 11. Divine inspiration apparently needed an editor.

Then there’s Jesus Barabbas, yes, possibly Jesus Barabbas, and the bizarre choice between “Jesus, son of the father” and Jesus, the supposed Son of the Father. From there, we get into Pilate’s suspiciously sympathetic portrayal, his theatrical hand-washing callback to Deuteronomy 21, and Matthew 27:25: “His blood be on us and on our children.” That verse didn’t stay confined to Matthew’s story. It became theological ammunition for centuries of antisemitism, while the actual Roman governor authorizing the actual Roman punishment somehow got progressively scrubbed of responsibility. Convenient.

And then Matthew absolutely floors it into apocalypse mode. The sky goes dark. The temple curtain tears. Rocks split. Tombs open. Dead holy people get up and walk into Jerusalem. No follow-up. No sequel. No “hey, what happened to all those resurrected corpses?” Matthew just drops Bible zombies into the crucifixion narrative and keeps moving. We also dig into Psalm 22, Jesus’s “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” cry, the sour wine usually translated as vinegar, Golgotha/Calvary, the “thieves” who may actually have been political insurgents, and why Jesus gets dramatically less magical the closer he gets to the cross.

Finally, we get to Joseph of Arimathea, the tomb guards found only in Matthew, and the suspiciously defensive story explaining why critics were apparently already saying Jesus’s followers stole the body. Matthew even tells us that explanation was still circulating “to this day,” which makes the guard story feel a lot less like eyewitness history and a lot more like a late-first-century rebuttal. If you like your Bible studies packed with textual problems, political spin, resurrection weirdness, and two atheists repeatedly asking why nobody ever checked on the zombies, this one’s for you.
