Matthew Chapter 27: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 27 wastes absolutely no time turning the Passion narrative into one of the strangest chapters we’ve encountered yet. Judas suddenly realizes that betraying Jesus was, in fact, a betrayal, returns his thirty pieces of silver, and hangs himself. The priests respond to this moral catastrophe by having an ethics debate about whether the blood money can go into the treasury before using it to buy a cemetery. Priorities. Then Matthew claims this fulfills Jeremiah, giving us yet another round of “wait...does that prophecy actually say what Matthew thinks it says?”

Meanwhile, Jesus gets hauled before Pontius Pilate... or “Pilates,” (if Wife’s brain gets the deciding vote) where we meet Jesus Barabbas, Pilate’s ominously dreaming wife, an apparently persuadable crowd screaming for crucifixion, and Pilate dramatically washing his hands of a death sentence he still allows to happen. Jesus is mocked, beaten, crowned with thorns, marched to Golgotha, and crucified while Husband and Wife wrestle with one of their biggest problems with Matthew’s story: after chapters describing enormous crowds, miraculous healings, supernatural feats, and people flocking to Jesus...where the hell did everybody go when he actually needed them?

Then Matthew decides crucifixion isn’t dramatic enough. Jesus cries, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, dies, the temple curtain tears, an earthquake hits, rocks split, tombs break open, and dead holy people come back to life. Yes. Matthew has zombies. Sort of. They’re raised when Jesus dies but apparently don’t wander into Jerusalem until after his resurrection, which raises approximately nine thousand questions and answers almost none of them. Naturally, this sends the episode completely off the rails into 28 Days Later, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, Ghostbusters, holy zombies, and whether Matthew is ever going to mention these resurrected people again.

By the end, Joseph of Arimathea gets Jesus into a tomb, the authorities seal it and post guards because they’re worried the disciples might steal the body, and Matthew leaves us dangling one chapter away from Christianity’s main event. Along the way we also somehow detour through Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Bon Jovi, Nickelback, Anne Hathaway, Amy Winehouse, Texas football, Will Smith, French bread, and prepositional phrases. Because apparently that’s what happens when an atheist Bible podcast reaches the crucifixion.
